Resumen: El propósito de este trabajo fue caracterizar las alteraciones orales en un grupo de pacientes COVID-19. Para ello se evaluaron 55 pacientes hospitalizados, confirmados COVID-19 en distintos estadios de severidad. Previo consentimiento informado, se examinó la cavidad oral y se registraron los hallazgos clínicos. El grupo de estudio estuvo conformado por 25 mujeres (45,5%) y 30 varones (54,5%), con edades comprendidas entre uno y 89 años. Un 40% de los pacientes mostraron alguna lesión bucal. Las lesiones más comunes fueron candidiasis y ulceraciones (7 pacientes cada uno) y en 2 pacientes se observó enantema. También se encontraron alteraciones de la normalidad como glositis migratoria y varicosidades linguales. Asimismo, se registraron alteraciones del gusto, xerostomía y dolor/ardor bucal en el 60, 27,3 y 36,4%, respectivamente. En los pacientes COVID-19 se observaron con frecuencia alteraciones y lesiones en la mucosa bucal. Finalmente, la disgeusia y el dolor y/o el ardor oral fueron los síntomas comunes en estos pacientes. Abstract In this work it was carried out the bioremediation of water containing chlorides with native microalgae (MCA) provided by the Centre for study and research in biotechnology (CIBIOT) at Universidad Pontificia Bolivariana. Microalgae presented an adaptation to the water and so the conditions evaluated reaching a production of CO2 in mg L-1 of 53.0, 26.6, 56.0, 16.0 and 30.0 and chloride removal efficiencies of 16.37, 26.03, 40.04, 25.96 and 20.25% for microalgae1, microalgae2, microalgae3, microalgae4 and microalgae5 respectively. Water bioremediation process was carried out with content of chlorides in fed batch system with an initial concentration of chlorides of 20585 mg L-1 every 2 days. The Manipulated variables were: the flow of MCA3 (10% inoculum) for test one; NPK flow for test two, and flow of flow of MCA3+0.5 g L-1 NPK. Chloride removal efficiencies were 66.88%, 63.41% and 66.98% for test one, two and three respectively, for a total bioprocess time of 55 days.

In the present work, known concentration of sulfite aqueous solutions in the presence and absence of gallic acid was measured to corroborate the validity of modified Monier-Williams method. Free and bound-sulfite was estimated by differential pulse voltammetry. To our surprise, the modified Monier-Williams method (also known as aspiration method) showed to be very inaccurate for free-sulfite, although suitable for bound-sulfite determination. The differential pulse approach, using the standard addition method and a correction coefficient, proved to be swift, cheap, and very precise and accurate.

Objectives: Mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders have a high prevalence in Colombia and there is a treatment gap. The World Health Organization (WHO) Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP) has various components. The mhGAP 2.0 Intervention Guide, aimed at improving primary health care, is a guide for the assessment and management of MNS disorders based on clinical decision-making protocols. The objective of this study was to determine the barriers that may hinder the program implementation process., Methods: A qualitative study with content analysis was conducted in three phases: i) study preparation, organization, and presentation; ii) open coding, categorization, and abstraction of contents; and iii) information analysis. The study included semi-structured interviews with 21 people involved in the provision of mental health services in Chocó (Colombia): five medical doctors, seven nurses, and three psychologists, as well as six professionals working in the administrative area of the department's health secretariats. The perceptions of these stakeholders were explored. Open-ended questions were asked to explore experiences with the process, as well as the barriers identified in practice., Results: Four different thematic categories were identified: intersectoral action, long-standing challenges, opportunities, and suitability of tools., Conclusions: A theoretical model of barriers to implementation of the mhGAP program was constructed, based on stakeholder perceptions. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) models in the classification of electromyographic (EMG) signals represents a significant advancement in the design of control systems for prostheses. This study explores the development of a portable system that classifies the electrical activity of three shoulder muscles in real time for actuator control, marking a milestone in the autonomy of prosthetic devices. Utilizing low-power microcontrollers, the system ensures continuous EMG signal recording, enhancing user mobility. Focusing on a case study-a 42-year-old man with left shoulder disarticulation-EMG activity was recorded over two days using a specifically designed electronic board. Data processing was performed using the Edge Impulse platform, renowned for its effectiveness in implementing AI on edge devices. The first day was dedicated to a training session with 150 repetitions spread across 30 trials and three different movements. Based on these data, the second day tested the AI model's ability to classify EMG signals in new movement executions in real time. The results demonstrate the potential of portable AI-based systems for prosthetic control, offering accurate and swift EMG signal classification that enhances prosthetic user functionality and experience. This study not only underscores the feasibility of real-time EMG signal classification but also paves the way for future research on practical applications and improvements in the quality of life for prosthetic users.

A typical absence seizure is a generalized epileptic event characterized by a sudden, brief alteration of consciousness that serves as a hallmark for various generalized epilepsy syndromes. Distinguishing between similar interictal and ictal electroencephalographic (EEG) epileptiform patterns poses a challenge. However, quantitative EEG, particularly spectral analysis focused on EEG rhythms, shows potential for differentiation. This study was designed to investigate discernible differences in EEG spectral dynamics and entropy patterns during the pre-ictal and post-ictal periods compared to the interictal state. We analyzed 20 EEG ictal patterns from 11 patients with confirmed typical absence seizures, and assessed recordings made during the pre-ictal, post-ictal, and interictal intervals. Power spectral density (PSD) was used for the quantitative analysis that focused on the delta, theta, alpha , and beta bands. In addition, we measured EEG signal regularity using approximate (ApEn) and multi-scale sample entropy (MSE). Findings demonstrate a significant increase in delta and theta power in the pre-ictal and post-ictal intervals compared to the interictal interval, especially in the posterior brain region. We also observed a notable decrease in entropy in the pre-ictal and post-ictal intervals, with a more pronounced effect in anterior brain regions. These results provide valuable information that can potentially aid in differentiating epileptiform patterns in typical absence seizures. The implications of our findings are promising for precision medicine approaches to epilepsy diagnoses and patient management. Introduction: The aim of this research was to present the process of intercultural creation and validation, in addition to the analysis of the psychometric properties of the Parenting, Behavior, Emotions and Suicide risk scale., Methods: A cross-sectional study, cultural adaptation and validation with an ethnic approach were carried out by expert judges in mental health; subsequently, the instrument was applied, and a factorial analysis was carried out, and it was established that there was agreement between the instrument results and two expert perspectives regarding spiritual disharmony. The sample consisted of 168 families of children and young people (54.8% women, 45.2% men), with a mean age of 11.2 years, in Colombia. Regarding the geographical location, 44% were from Guajira, 44.6% were from Nariño and 11.3% were from Vaupés, from the Wayuu, Awá and Emberá communities, respectively., Results: The scale showed high reliability (Chronbach's α=0.911), and in the factorial analysis the following parenting domains were formed from the parents: involvement, monitoring and bond, from boys, girls and young people; suicidal risk perceived by caregivers and perceived by children and young people; in addition to a total mental health risk. The questions that inquired about hallucinations and seizures did not show grouping in any factor, and two questions were eliminated. Similarly, a high inter-rater concordance was shown, with a higher Cohen's κ coefficient for all domains., Conclusion: There are few intercultural and early detection studies of parenting and mental health problems in children and youth that have an ethnic approach. It is observed that the instrument serves as a means of monitoring mental health issues in children and adolescents, as well as the parenting practices employed in their socialization, from both the perspective of caregivers and the young individuals themselve. This study indicates that the scale is an adequate tool, quick and easy to administer in first-level care settings.

Introduction: People with epilepsy have multiple barriers to recovery: access to medication, comorbidities and social problems. The aim of this study is to determine psychosocial factors associated with the perception of quality of life in people with epilepsy in the department of Bolivar, Colombia, in the year 2022., Subjects and Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study, correlational, with a sample stratified with a margin of error of 5%, according to the calculation of the average number of people treated for epilepsy in Colombia. 174 people participated with a mean age of 39.55 years, 50% men and 50% women. An instrument was used that determined sociodemographic data, quality of life (Quality of Life in Epilepsy Inventory-10), adherence to treatment (Morisky test), self-care behaviors, perception of disability and provision of health services. All the instruments showed a Cronbach's Alpha greater than 0.686 for this population., Results: 21.3% had focal onset epilepsy; 41% with generalized epilepsy without focal onset; 18.4% with focal onset that generalized; 12.6% did not know their type of epilepsy; and 6.3% reported that they were not informed about their type of epilepsy. Based on correlations, an explanatory model of quality of life is shown, with pillars such as drug adherence, self-care habits, time without seizures, and perceived disability., Conclusions: Although time without seizures is a fundamental element in recovery, living conditions and mental health problems are key elements to achieve a better quality of life in epilepsy.

The brain has been understood as an interconnected neural network generally modeled as a graph to outline the functional topology and dynamics of brain processes. Classic graph modeling is based on single-layer models that constrain the traits conveyed to trace brain topologies. Multilayer modeling, in contrast, makes it possible to build whole-brain models by integrating features of various kinds. The aim of this work was to analyze EEG dynamics studies while gathering motor imagery data through single-layer and multilayer network modeling. The motor imagery database used consists of 18 EEG recordings of four motor imagery tasks: left hand, right hand, feet, and tongue. Brain connectivity was estimated by calculating the coherence adjacency matrices from each electrophysiological band (δ, θ, α and β) from brain areas and then embedding them by considering each band as a single-layer graph and a layer of the multilayer brain models. Constructing a reliable multilayer network topology requires a threshold that distinguishes effective connections from spurious ones. For this reason, two thresholds were implemented, the classic fixed (average) one and Otsu's version. The latter is a new proposal for an adaptive threshold that offers reliable insight into brain topology and dynamics. Findings from the brain network models suggest that frontal and parietal brain regions are involved in motor imagery tasks.

Background: Anxiety and depression symptoms are known to increase cancer symptom burden, yet little is known about the longitudinal integrations of these among Hispanic/Latinx patients. The goal of this study was to explore the trajectory and longitudinal interactions among anxiety and depression, cancer symptom burden, and health-related quality of life in Hispanic/Latinx cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy., Methods: Baseline behavioral assessments were performed before starting chemotherapy. Follow-up behavioral assessments were performed at 3, 6, and 9 months after starting chemotherapy. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, Fisher's exact tests, and Mann-Whitney tests explored associations among outcome variables. Adjusted multilevel mixed-effects linear regression models were also used to evaluate the association between HADS scores, follow-up visits, FACT-G scale, MDASI scale, and sociodemographic variables., Results: Increased cancer symptom burden was significantly related to changes in anxiety symptoms' scores (adjusted β^ = 0.11 [95% CI: 0.02, 0.19]. Increased quality of life was significantly associated with decreased depression and anxiety symptoms (adjusted β^ = -0.33; 95% CI: -0.47, -0.18, and 0.38 adjusted β^= -0.38; 95% CI: -0.55, -0.20, respectively)., Conclusions: Findings highlight the need to conduct periodic mental health screenings among cancer patients initiating cancer treatment.

Alignment-free k-mer-based algorithms in whole genome sequence comparisons remainan ongoing challenge. Here, we explore the possibility to use Topic Modeling for organismwhole-genome comparisons. We analyzed 30 complete genomes from three bacterial families bytopic modeling. For this, each genome was considered as a document and 13-mer nucleotiderepresentations as words. Latent Dirichlet allocation was used as the probabilistic modeling of thecorpus. We where able to identify the topic distribution among analyzed genomes, which is highlyconsistent with traditional hierarchical classification. It is possible that topic modeling may be appliedto establish relationships between genome's composition and biological phenomena.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to describe the preferences, the use, satisfaction of mental health services (MHS) among a sample of Puerto Rican patients with cancer undergoing oncology treatment., Methods: A convenience sample of 120 patients diagnosed with cancer was recruited. Self-report questionnaires assessed socio-demographic and background questions, and the Mental Health Service Preference, Utilization and Satisfaction Questionnaire (MHSPUS). The Socio-demographic and Background Questionnaire inquired about participants' demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, and included questions such as history of psychiatric diagnosis and spiritual practices. Univariate and Chi square analyses were used for descriptive purposes. Logistic regressions were used to explore associations between sociodemographic factors and MHS preferences and use., Results: The majority of the sample were females (53.8%), 61 and older (53.8%), and married or living with partner (57.1%), and reported an income equal to or less than $12,000 per year (44.4%), which places them under the US federal poverty line. Most of the participants (66.7%) reported being receptive to seeking services. Findings showed a significant association between living situation and past (p < .05) and lifetime use (p < .05) of MHS and past use of MHS. Participants living alone were more like to have used MHS in the past and during their lifetime. Adjusted logistic regression analyses revealed that living with someone was a protective factor for not using MHS in their lifetime (OR = 0.28; C1 = 0.08-0.95). Participants preferred to receive MHS at the oncology clinic, preferably on the date of their oncology appointments and during morning hours., Conclusion: Findings support the integration of mental health services within the oncology practice setting., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

This article presents the data related to the research paper entitled "The analysis of EEG coherence reflects middle childhood differences in mathematical achievement" (González-Garrido et al., 2018). The dataset is derived from the electroencephalographic (EEG) records registered from a total of 60 8-9-years-old children with different math skill levels (High: HA, Average: AA, and Low Achievement: LA) while performing a symbolic magnitude comparison task. The average brain patterns are shown through Time-Frequency Representations (TFR) for each group, and also grand-mean amplitudes within specific EEG epochs in a 19-electrode array are provided. Making this information publicly available for further analyses could significantly contribute to a better understanding on how math achievement in children associates with cognitive processing strategies.

Genomic signal processing (GSP) methods which convert DNA data to numerical values have recently been proposed, which would offer the opportunity of employing existing digital signal processing methods for genomic data. One of the most used methods for exploring data is cluster analysis which refers to the unsupervised classification of patterns in data. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for performing cluster analysis of DNA sequences that is based on the use of GSP methods and the K-means algorithm. We also propose a visualization method that facilitates the easy inspection and analysis of the results and possible hidden behaviors. Early auditory deprivation has serious neurodevelopmental and cognitive repercussions largely derived from impoverished and delayed language acquisition. These conditions may be associated with early changes in brain connectivity. Vibrotactile stimulation is a sensory substitution method that allows perception and discrimination of sound, and even speech. To clarify the efficacy of this approach, a vibrotactile oddball task with 700 and 900 Hz pure-tones as stimuli [counterbalanced as target (T: 20% of the total) and non-target (NT: 80%)] with simultaneous EEG recording was performed by 14 profoundly deaf and 14 normal-hearing (NH) subjects, before and after a short training period (five 1-h sessions; in 2.5-3 weeks). A small device worn on the right index finger delivered sound-wave stimuli. The training included discrimination of pure tone frequency and duration, and more complex natural sounds. A significant P300 amplitude increase and behavioral improvement was observed in both deaf and normal subjects, with no between group differences. However, a P3 with larger scalp distribution over parietal cortical areas and lateralized to the right was observed in the profoundly deaf. A graph theory analysis showed that brief training significantly increased fronto-central brain connectivity in deaf subjects, but not in NH subjects. Together, ERP tools and graph methods depicted the different functional brain dynamic in deaf and NH individuals, underlying the temporary engagement of the cognitive resources demanded by the task. Our findings showed that the index-fingertip somatosensory mechanoreceptors can discriminate sounds. Further studies are necessary to clarify brain connectivity dynamics associated with the performance of vibrotactile language-related discrimination tasks and the effect of lengthier training programs.

Genomic signal processing (GSP) refers to the use of digital signal processing (DSP) tools for analyzing genomic data such as DNA sequences. A possible application of GSP that has not been fully explored is the computation of the distance between a pair of sequences. In this work we present GAFD, a novel GSP alignment-free distance computation method. We introduce a DNA sequence-to-signal mapping function based on the employment of doublet values, which increases the number of possible amplitude values for the generated signal. Additionally, we explore the use of three DSP distance metrics as descriptors for categorizing DNA signal fragments. Our results indicate the feasibility of employing GAFD for computing sequence distances and the use of descriptors for characterizing DNA fragments.

Gangliosides are membrane-associated glycosphingolipids. N-Acetyl GM3 and N-glycolyl GM3 are two tumor-associated antigens expressed in cancer tissues such as melanoma and mammalian cancer. In order to use these antigens in GM3-based vaccines for patients with early stage cancer, the synthetic version is recommended to avoid the risk of animal virus transmission from the source. However, the isolation of natural gangliosides is of comparative value for the structural characterization. The structures of N-acetyl and N-glycolyl GM3 extracted from dog and horse erythrocytes were evaluated by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques; additionally, the natural N-acetyl ganglioside was compared to a synthetic one. In addition to the main compound with C24:0 fatty acid chain, a minor component with an additional unsaturation in the ceramide chain was detected, in both the dog and the horse gangliosides. This paper shows spectroscopic evidence of the aforementioned compounds.

Background: In Puerto Rico, relative to the United States, a disparity exists in detecting oral precancers and early cancers. To identify factors leading to the deficit in early detection, we obtained the perspectives of San Juan healthcare practitioners whose practice could be involved in the detection of such oral lesions., Methods: Key informant (KI) interviews were conducted with ten clinicians practicing in or around San Juan, Puerto Rico. We then triangulated our KI interview findings with other data sources, including recent literature on oral cancer detection from various geographic areas, current curricula at the University of Puerto Rico Schools of Medicine and Dental Medicine, as well as local health insurance regulations., Results: Key informant-identified factors that likely contribute to the detection deficit include: many practitioners are deficient in knowledge regarding oral cancer and precancer; oral cancer screening examinations are limited regarding which patients receive them and the elements included. In Puerto Rico, specialists generally perform oral biopsies, and patient referral can be delayed by various factors, including government-subsidized health insurance, often referred to as Reforma. Reforma-based issues include often inadequate clinician knowledge regarding Reforma requirements/provisions, diagnostic delays related to Reforma bureaucracy, and among primary physicians, a perceived financial disincentive in referring Reforma patients., Conclusions: Addressing these issues may be useful in reducing the deficit in detecting oral precancers and early oral cancer in Puerto Rico.

Introduction: Obesity is a serious public health problem, and the increasing prevalence of overweight status in the population is a major concern worldwide. Fifty eight percent of the Hispanic population of Puerto Rico is obese, but no data are available regarding thyroid status and body mass index (BMI) in this Hispanic group. This study was conducted to investigate if a relationship existed between obesity and thyroid function, as measured by thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels on a group of Hispanics enrolled in a weight control clinic in Puerto Rico., Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of 637 clinical files of patients enrolled at Doctors Weight Loss Center. Five hundred seventy-five patients were eligible for this study. Inclusion criteria were adults > or = 21 years of age with data for age, sex, height, weight, percentage fat, and TSH values., Results: Prevalence of subclinical or mild hypothyroidism (TSH > 4.1 mU/L), as per American Thyroid Association definitions, was 8.2% in our study group, which is higher than reported in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Another 18.2% were in the at-risk category (TSH 2.51-4.0 mU/L)., Conclusion: We found no association between thyroid status and overweight or obesity in this study group but found a higher prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism compared to the prevalence reported in NHANES.

This is the first national study of breast-cancer knowledge, beliefs, and early detection practices among elderly women (65+) in Puerto Rico. Cancer breast examination (CBE) was the most common early detection practice, followed by the mammogram, with breast self exam (BSE) a distant third. The primary reasons most often cited for never having a mammogram related to both personal and external factors: not having symptoms, negligence or forgetfulness, and not having a physician's referral. No statistically significant difference (p < 0.05) was found between knowledge and early detection practices. Conversely, beliefs had an impact on preventive behavior. Those who had less misconceptions were most likely to have had a CBE or a mammogram. Bivariate analysis demonstrated that age was associated with performing a BSE once or twice monthly, ever having a mammogram, and having a mammogram in the past two years. A higher socioeconomic status was associated to performing BSE and ever having had a mammogram. Education correlated positively to ever having a mammogram or having a mammogram in the two years prior to the interview. Factors that explained compliance with a mammogram in the last two years included referral from a physician, owning a car, and receiving information after menopause on breast cancer from a health care provider. A gynecological visit increased the probability of having had a mammogram during the last two years. Logistic regression determined that a referral from a physician was the most important factor for mammogram compliance when a combination of variables were considered.

In order to plan the health services for the elderly population, it is necessary to quantify their health status and their functional capacity. In Puerto Rico, few epidemiological studies have been conducted regarding functional capacity and chronic diseases in the elderly population. One of the difficulties to undertake these studies is the high cost and risks to move this population for clinical exams, in addition to the methodology limitation of self-report in the elderly population. This study shows the use of logistic regression to estimate the prevalence of chronic diseases and functional capacity, when the observed data are not consisted with the planed sampling scheme. Four hundred and eighty-seven elderly persons (65 yr. and over) were interviewed in the municipalities of Canóvanas, Carolina, Loíza and Trujillo Alto in Puerto Rico, using a cross-sectional design. More than half of the elderly had visual problems (IC 95%: 54.8%, 63.8%), arthritis (IC 95%: 52.7%, 61.5%) and hypertension (IC 95%: 47.3%, 56.3%). In the case of hypertension, significant differences (p < 0.05) by sex were observed, where women reported a higher prevalence than men. One of the higher prevalences in the functional capacity status was with urine accidents. More than one-third of the population is estimated to have this problem (IC 95%: 34.7%, 43.4%). One-fourth of the population had limitations with going out for shopping (IC 95%: 23.9%, 31.9%) and using public and private transportation (IC 95%: 19.5%, 26.9%). We conclude that the applied methodology was consistent with the estimation presented in the literature and statistics from the Puerto Rico Health Department. However, it is necessary to continue assessing the design and analytical methodology, in order to undertake consistent and periodic evaluations of the elderly population.

This paper presents the results of the validation process to determine the concepts for knowledge and beliefs about breast cancer early detection practices among Puerto Rican elderly women. An initial questionnaire was designed based on the scientific literature review and focus group experiences. To determine its reliability and validity, 50 elderly women, stratified by type of profession and place of residence, were interviewed twice. Consistency of the questionnaire was analyzed using binomial test, matched t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Cronbach's coefficient effect. Factor analysis (FA) was the statistical technique used to analyze the grouping of the knowledge and beliefs statements. FA indicated that three scales for knowledge and one for beliefs can be constructed. The purpose of the scales was to identify differences among groups, according to breast cancer early detection practices. Construct validity was performed to determine the number of statistical associations between the scales and these practices. The results showed that beliefs scales was associated with practice of mammogram (p < 0.05), and visit to the gynecologist (p < 0.05) while the knowledge scale for early-detection was associated with the clinical breast examination (p < 0.05). The beliefs scale had better consistency than the knowledge scale. The Cronbach's alpha was 0.75 for the beliefs' scale and 0.30, 0.41 and 0.43 for each defined knowledge scale, respectively.
