1. Catecholaminergic and cholinergic neuromodulation in autism spectrum disorder: A comparison to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder

Abstract

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social impairments and restricted, repetitive behaviors. Treatment of ASD is notoriously difficult and might benefit from identification of underlying mechanisms that overlap with those disturbed in other developmental disorders, for which treatment options are more obvious. One example of the latter is attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), given the efficacy of especially stimulants in treatment of ADHD. Deficiencies in catecholaminergic systems [dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE)] in ADHD are obvious targets for stimulant treatment. Recent findings suggest that dysfunction in catecholaminergic systems may also be a factor in at least a subgroup of ASD. In this review we scrutinize the evidence for catecholaminergic mechanisms underlying ASD symptoms, and also include in this analysis a third classic ascending arousing system, the acetylcholinergic (ACh) network. We complement this with a comprehensive review of DA-, NE-, and ACh-targeted interventions in ASD, and an exploratory search for potential treatment-response predictors (biomarkers) in ASD, genetically or otherwise. Based on this review and analysis we propose that (1) stimulant treatment may be a viable option for an ASD subcategory, possibly defined by genetic subtyping; (2) cerebellar dysfunction is pronounced for a relatively small ADHD subgroup but much more common in ASD and in both cases may point toward NE- or ACh-directed intervention; (3) deficiency of the cortical salience network is sizable in subgroups of both disorders, and biomarkers such as eye blink rate and pupillometric data may predict the efficacy of targeting this underlying deficiency via DA, NE, or ACh in both ASD and ADHD.

2. [Child psychiatric learning goals for general psychiatric training: a Delphi study]

Abstract

The new Dutch training plan for psychiatrists puts more emphasis on life course psychiatry. Subsequently, adjustments in the educational program regarding child and adolescent psychiatric knowledge, skills and attitudes are needed.A broadly supported agreement and consensus on Dutch national learning objectives of education in child and adolescent psychiatry.With a modified Delphi method, a set of preliminary learning objectives formulated by a working group of experts was presented to trainees (n = 9), adult psychiatrists (n = 12), child and adolescent psychiatrists (n = 17) and adult patients and their relatives (n = 15). In two rounds, the learning objectives were commented on, supplemented, scored for relevance and prioritized.Out of 27 original learning objectives, 20 were assessed as important or necessary by over 80% of the respondents (knowledge 7/9, skills 8/10, attitudes 5/8). Two learning objectives were rejected (less than 60% considered these to be important or necessary). Seven learning objectives were re-assessed in a second round as these were modified (5) or added (2). Four of them were rated as important or necessary by over 80% of participants. The following goals were most often prioritized: knowledge about healthy development and intergenerational issues; ability to make contact with children and families and to integrate protective and risk factors of the child and environment; and knowing onersquo;s own limitations of child psychiatric themes.A Delphi study helped gain support from stakeholders for adjustments in training and education by creating consensus about child psychiatric learning goals for general psychiatric training.

Abstract

The Phase-I trigger readout electronics upgrade of the ATLAS Liquid Argon calorimeters enhances the physics reach of the experiment during the upcoming operation at increasing Large Hadron Collider luminosities. The new system, installed during the second Large Hadron Collider Long Shutdown, increases the trigger readout granularity by up to a factor of ten as well as its precision and range. Consequently, the background rejection at trigger level is improved through enhanced filtering algorithms utilizing the additional information for topological discrimination of electromagnetic and hadronic shower shapes. This paper presents the final designs of the new electronic elements, their custom electronic devices, the procedures used to validate their proper functioning, and the performance achieved during the commissioning of this system., Comment: 56 pages, 41 figures, 6 tables

Abstract

International audience; The seismoelectric and self-potential methods are showing promises to characterize both the vadose zone of the Earth, hydrocarbon reservoirs and CO2 sequestration. That said, the dependence of a key parameter, the streaming coupling coefficient, with the saturation remains highly debated. We explore here the relationship between the streaming potential coupling coefficient, the electrical resistivity, the capillary pressure curves and the permeability in two saturated and partially saturated carbonate rocks characterized by distinct textures. We investigate a limestone from the Paris basin (the Brauvilliers limestone) and a dolostone from the Aquitain basin (sample labeled LS2), both in France. The two core samples are characterized in terms of their porosity and intrinsic formation factor. A new core flooding system is used to measure simultaneously and, for the first time, both the relative permeability, the resistivity index and the streaming potential coupling coefficient in steady-state two-phase flow conditions as a function of the saturation with CO2 or N2. The results are compared with a recently developed theoretical model, which can accommodate either the Brooks and Corey model or the van Genuchten model for the capillary pressure curves. This model is predicting a set of relationships between the streaming potential coupling coefficient, the relative permeability and the second Archie's exponent. We found a good agreement between the model based on the van Genuchten approach and experimental data, but still we could not fit all the curves with the same value of the pore size index λ or van Genuchten exponent mv especially for the relative permeability.

Abstract

International audience; EURECA (European Underground Rare Event Calorimeter Array) is a new project, searching for dark matter, with largely the present groups of the CRESST and EDELWEISS experiments and already a few new groups. The aim is to explore scalar cross sections in the 10−9–10−10 picobarn region with a target mass of up to one tonne. A major advantage of EURECA is our planned use of more that just one target material (multi target experiment for WIMP identification). In preparation for this large-scale experiment, R&D for EURECA is provided through the current phases of CRESST and EDELWEISS.

Abstract

International audience; New photon detectors, based on the use of multi-anode photo-multiplier tubes coupled to individual lens telescopes and read out with a dedicated read-out electronics system, equip the central region of the Cherenkov imaging counter RICH-1 of the COMPASS experiment at CERN SPS. They are characterised by high photon yield, fast response and high rate capability and are successfully in operation since the 2006 COMPASS data taking. The photon detection system fully matches the expected performance. The design and construction of the photon detectors are described in detail.

A fast photon detection system has been built as a part of the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH-1 detector: it is based on 576 multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and fast readout electronics. This system has replaced the MWPCs with CsI photo-cathodes in the central region ( 1.3 m 2 , 25% of the total area) of the COMPASS RICH-1 photon detectors and has successfully been operated during the data taking in 2006 and 2007. We report about the fast photon detection system design, construction and commissioning, in particular about the design optimization and the validation tests of the lens telescopes. Preliminary values for the increased performances of COMPASS RICH-1 after the upgrade are also presented.

Abstract

A fast readout system for the upgrade of the COMPASS RICH detector has been developed and successfully used for data taking in 2006 and 2007. The new readout system for the multi-anode PMTs in the central part of the photon detector of the RICH is based on the high-sensitivity MAD4 preamplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1-TDC chip characterized by high-resolution. The readout electronics has been designed taking into account the high photon flux in the central part of the detector and the requirement to run at high trigger rates of up to 100 kHz with negligible dead-time. The system is designed as a very compact setup and is mounted directly behind the multi-anode photomultipliers. The data are digitized on the frontend boards and transferred via optical links to the readout system. Abstract

The heat quenching factor Q' (the ratio of the heat signals produced by nuclear and electron recoils of equal energy) of the heat-and-ionization germanium bolometers used by the EDELWEISS collaboration has been measured. It is explained how this factor affects the energy scale and the effective quenching factor observed in calibrations with neutron sources. This effective quenching effect is found to be equal to Q/Q', where Q is the quenching factor of the ionization yield. To measure Q', a precise EDELWEISS measurement of Q/Q' is combined with values of Q obtained from a review of all available measurements of this quantity in tagged neutron beam experiments. The systematic uncertainties associated with this method to evaluate Q' are discussed in detail. For recoil energies between 20 and 100 keV, the resulting heat quenching factor is Q' = 0.91+-0.03+-0.04, where the two errors are the contributions from the Q and Q/Q' measurements, respectively. The present compilation of Q values and evaluation of Q' represent one of the most precise determinations of the absolute energy scale for any detector used in direct searches for dark matter., Comment: 28 pages, 7 figures. International audience; RICH-1 is a large size RICH detector in operation at the COMPASS experiment since 2001 and recently upgraded implementing a new photon detection system with increased performance.A dedicated software package has been developed to perform RICH-1 data reduction, pattern recognition and particle identification as well as a number of accessory tasks for detector studies.The software package, the algorithms implemented and the detector characterisation and performance are reported in detail.

Abstract

COMPASS RICH-1 is a large size gaseous Imaging Cherenkov Detector providing hadron identification in the range from 3 to 55 GeV/c, in the wide acceptance spectrometer of the COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS. It uses a 3 m long C(4)F(10) radiator, a 21 m(2) large VUV mirror surface and two kinds of photon detectors: MAPMTs and MWPCs with CsI photocathodes, covering a total of 5.5 m(2). It is in operation since 2002 and its performance has increased in time thanks to progressive optimization and mostly to a major upgrade which was implemented in 2006. The main characteristics of COMPASS RICH-1 components are described and some specific aspects related to the radiator gas system, the mirror alignment, the MWPC electrical stability and the readout electronics are discussed. Some key features of the event reconstruction and the PID analysis are presented together with results from the COMPASS RICH-1 performance characterization study. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Abstract

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe and frequent disorder. Little is known about its early stages, which can be in childhood or adolescence.To investigate to what extent BPD is stable from childhood through to adulthood.The literature was systematically reviewed with the help of Medline, Psycinfo, embase and the Cochrane Library.Of children known to have BPD in the primary school age-group, 80% met the criteria for a personality disorder in adulthood and 16% met the criteria for BPD. In a population study of adults with bpd, 30% still met the criteria two years later. In groups of adolescents at risk the criteria were met by 15-30 % after two to three years. These groups also showed a low dimensional stability for BPD. The most stable symptoms were feelings of emptiness, anger, affect-instability and identity problems. Less stable symptoms were suicidality, self-harm, impulsiveness, unstable relationships, derealisation and paranoid thinking.Research into the stability of BPD that starts in children of primary school age has been too limited in a methodological sense for us to draw any firm conclusions. Research into BPD that starts in adolescence shows a low categorial and dimensional stability. Research into the onset of BPD in adults shows comparable low stability, but only after six years. In adolescents and adults impulsive and self-harm behaviour are probably the least stable symptoms and affective symptoms the most stable ones.

Abstract

A package for pattern recognition and PID by COMPASS RICH-1 has been developed and used for the analysis of COMPASS data collected in the years 2002 to 2004, and 2006-2007 with the upgraded RICH-1 photon detectors. It has allowed the full characterization of the detector in the starting version and in the upgraded one, as well as the PID for physics results. Abstract

The COMPASS experiment at CERN provides hadron identification in a wide momentum range employing a large size gaseous Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH). The presence of large uncorrelated background in the COMPASS environment was limiting the efficiency of COMPASS RICH-1 in the very forward regime. A major upgrade of RICH-1 required a new technique for Cherenkov photon detection at count rates of several 106/s per channel in the central detector part, and a read-out system allowing for trigger rates of up to 100 kHz. To cope with these requirements, the photon detectors of the central region have been replaced with a fast photon detection system described here, while, in the peripheral regions, the existing multi-wire proportional chambers with CsI photo-cathodes have been equipped with a new read-out system based on APV preamplifiers and flash ADC chips. The new system consists of multi-anode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes, and fast read-out electronics based on the MAD4 amplifier-discriminator and the dead-time free F1 TDC chip. The project was completely designed and implemented in less than two years: The upgraded detector is in operation since the 2006 CERN SPS run. We present the photon detection design, constructive aspects and test studies to characterise the single photon response of the MAPMTs coupled to the read-out system as well as the detector performance based on the 2006 data.

Abstract

A major upgrade of the Cherenkov photon detection system of COMPASS RICH-1 has been performed and it has been in operation since the 2006 physics run. The inner part of the photon detector has been replaced by a different technology in order to measure Cherenkov photons at high photoelectron rates, up to several times 10 6 per second and per channel. Cherenkov photons from 200 to 750 nm are detected by 576 multianode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) with 16 channels each, coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and fast, high sensitivity and high time resolution electronics read-out. To guarantee an optimal performance of the complete system, parameters like dark current, gain, uniformity, relative quantum efficiency have been measured for a totality of more than 600 MAPMTs (about 10 000 channels) in a fully automated test-stand, developed for this purpose. The ideal working point for each individual pixel could be ascertained by these measurements. In 2006 the newly equipped detector exhibited an excellent performance: about 56 detected photons per ring at saturation and a time resolution of better than 1 ns. We report about the MAPMT characterisation and the quality control set-up, protocol and results.

Abstract

Particle identification at high multiplicities is a key feature of the COMPASS experiment at CERN's SPS. Hadrons up to 50 GeV/c are identified by a RICH detector with a large horizontal and vertical acceptance of ±250 mrad and ±180 mrad, respectively. The central region of the photon detector is equipped with multi-anode photomultiplier tubes, the remaining 75% of the total active area are covered by MWPCs with CsI photocathodes. In order to improve the performance of the detector at very high beam intensities, more than 62000 channels of a new analog readout system of file MWPCs, based on the APV25 chip, were developed and installed in 2006. The new system features good single photon detection efficiency due to its low noise, negligible dead time at trigger rates up to 50 kHz, and low cost. In addition, sampling of the MWPC signal allows us to measure the signal time with a resolution of about 30 ns or better. The architecture of the new readout system as well as the performance results of the RICH-1 detector in the outer region during 2006 COMPASS run will be discussed

Abstract

A fast photon detection system has been built and assembled for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1. The system is based on multianode photomultipliers coupled to fused silica lenses to collect the light from a larger surface and to guide it to the photocathode, preserving the position information. The emphasis is on the fast response and high rate capability of the detectors and the associated electronics. The photon detection system is now ready and it will be employed in the 2006 COMPASS data taking. We report about the system design and construction.

Abstract

A fast photon detection system has been built for the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, the large size gaseous RICH detector in use at the COMPASS Experiment at the CERN SPS since 2001. The photon detectors of the central region have been replaced by a new system based on multi-anode photomultipliers coupled to individual fused silica lens telescopes and a fast readout electronics system, while in the outer region the existing MWPCs with CsI photocathodes have been equipped with a new readout system, based on the APV chip. RICH-1 has been successfully operated in its upgraded version during the 2006 run. We report on the upgrade design and construction, and on the preliminary characterization of the upgraded RICH-1 performances: at saturation about 60 photons per ring have routinely been obtained and the background level has drastically been reduced thanks to the good time resolution of the new system, leading to a 2 σ π –K separation above 55 GeV/c.

Abstract

International audience; This paper presents our interpretation and understanding of the different backgrounds in the EDELWEISS-I data sets. We analyze in detail the several populations observed, which include gammas, alphas, neutrons, thermal sensor events and surface events, and try to combine all data sets to provide a coherent picture of the nature and localisation of the background sources. In light of this interpretation, we draw conclusions regarding the background suppression scheme for the EDELWEISS-II phase.

Abstract

The COMPASS experiment at the SPS accelerator at CERN uses a large scale Ring Imaging CHerenkov detector (RICH) to identify pions, kaons and protons in a wide momentum range. For the data taking in 2006, the COMPASS RICH has been upgraded in the central photon detection area (25% of the surface) with a new technology to detect Cherenkov photons at very high count rates of several 10^6 per second and channel and a new dead-time free read-out system, which allows trigger rates up to 100 kHz. The Cherenkov photons are detected by an array of 576 visible and ultra-violet sensitive multi-anode photomultipliers with 16 channels each. Abstract

In the context of the upgrade of COMPASS RICH-1, we are developing a fast photodetection system for RICH counters, based on UV extended Multi-Anode PhotoMultiplier Tubes (MAPMT) and a custom, low dead-time electronic readout system. Photons are concentrated on the MAPMT photocathode by an optical system that preserves the position information. The ratio between the collection and the photosensitive surfaces is ∼7.5 in our design, larger than in previous applications. A new front-end electronics, based on a modified version of the MAD4 discriminator chip, is being realized to digitize the MAPMT signals. We report about the design of the photodetection system and of the associated electronic readout system, and on the preliminary test beam results.

Abstract

The new concept of the spherical TPC aims at relatively large target masses with low threshold and background, keeping an extremely simple and robust operation. Such a device would open the way to detect the neutrino-nucleus interaction, which, although a standard process, remains undetected due to the low energy of the neutrino-induced nuclear recoils. The progress in the development of the fist 1 m$^3$ prototype at Saclay is presented. Abstract

The final results of the EDELWEISS-I dark matter search using cryogenic heat-and-ionization Ge detectors are presented. The final data sample corresponds to an increase by a factor five in exposure relative to the previously published results. A recoil energy threshold of 13 keV or better was achieved with three 320g detectors working simultaneously over four months of stable operation. Limits on the spin-independent cross-section for the scattering of a WIMP on a nucleon are derived from an accumulated fiducial exposure of 62 kg.d., 42 pages, 16 figures, submitted to Physical Review D, 1 figure and 2 references added, some little changes in the text

Abstract

The EDELWEISS collaboration is searching for WIMP dark matter using natural Ge cryogenic detectors. The whole data set of the first phase of the experiment contains a fiducial exposure of 4.8 kg.day on Ge-73, the naturally present (7.8%), high-spin Ge isotope. The sensitivity of the experiment to the spin-dependent WIMP-nucleon interactions is evaluated using the model-independent framework proposed by Tovey et al., Comment: v2: new references and figures added, other minor changes. Abstract

MegaCam is an imaging CCD camera with a 1 square degree field of view for the new MegaPrime prime focus of the 3.6 meter Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. This CCD camera is fixed on an aluminum structure, called Camembert for its shape, housing a shutter, a filter system and a roll pitch system to tune the CCD mosaic plane. The shutter is made with 1 meter diameter honeycomb half disks that rotates to covers or exposes the CCD mosaic. On this shutter a calibration source is fixed to monitor the CCD and its electronics. The filter system is made of a jukebox with a capacity of eight 30 cm square filters and of a loading arm to place them under the field of view. The instrument was delivered to the CFHT observatory on June 10, 2002 and first light is scheduled in October 2002.

Abstract

An analytical parametric study was made of an infinitely long, cylindrical fuel capsule containing thulia (Tm/sub 2//sup 170/O/sub 3/) encapsulated in two different physical forms and in two different liner configurations. Diameters of wafers maintained at 0.060 inch thickness were varied between 0.6 and 3.0 inches. Radial temperature profiles were determined for thulia power densities ranging from 8 to 24 W/cc and fuel capsule surface temperatures ranging from 1000 to 2732/sup 0/F. Hastelloy-X, Haynes-25, T-222, tungsten, platinum and molybdenum are the liner materials investigated. Methods of calculation, (including computer codes), assumptions used, error analyses and results are presented and discussed.

Abstract

The double twin pregnancy with complete hydatidiform mole and coexistent fetus is a rare event and perinatal treatment complex. Presents a significant case of this unusual partnership and describes their evolution. Patient of 33 years, secondary infertility factor-peritoneal tube and pregnancy achieved by in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer. An ultrasound early pregnancy reported twice, a sack was a complete mole, another bag was a fetus and placenta previa unchanged total. The case is carefully monitored and uterine inhibitors were administered at different stages of gestation. It settled the case by caesarean section at 37 weeks and obstetric hysterectomy for placenta previa percreta molar involution of the placenta and newborn health. The evolution of the mother and the child was appropriate.

Abstract

The aim of this double-blind pilot trial was to compare clindamycin/primaquine with trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMZ) as primary treatment for AIDS-related Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). The focus was on toxicity and tolerability since comparisons of efficacy were limited by the small sample size. Sixty-five individuals with a first episode of possible PCP were randomly assigned to receive clindamycin/primaquine (34 patients) or TMP-SMZ (31 patients). PCP was subsequently proven microbiologically in 27 and 22 of the patients in these respective groups. Half of the participants had an arterial partial oxygen pressure at enrollment of < or = torr. The incidence and severity of adverse reactions were lower--but not significantly lower (P = .07 and .08, respectively)--with clindamycin/primaquine. The markers of severity improved in a similar manner regardless of which regimen was administered. No significant differences were documented in outcome, duration of survival, length of the PCP-free interval, or rate of relapse. The results of this pilot study show a trend toward less toxicity with clindamycin/primaquine than with TMP-SMZ. This result must be confirmed by larger-scale clinical trials, which are also needed to better compare the efficacy of the two regimens.
