We investigate the magnetic properties of LiYbO$_2$, containing a three-dimensionally frustrated, diamond-like lattice via neutron scattering, magnetization, and heat capacity measurements. The stretched diamond network of Yb$^{3+}$ ions in LiYbO$_2$ enters a long-range incommensurate, helical state with an ordering wave vector ${\bf{k}} = (0.384, \pm 0.384, 0)$ that "locks-in" to a commensurate ${\bf{k}} = (1/3, \pm 1/3, 0)$ phase under the application of a magnetic field. The spiral magnetic ground state of LiYbO$_2$ can be understood in the framework of a Heisenberg $J_1-J_2$ Hamiltonian on a stretched diamond lattice, where the propagation vector of the spiral is uniquely determined by the ratio of $J_2/|J_1|$. The pure Heisenberg model, however, fails to account for the relative phasing between the Yb moments on the two sites of the bipartite lattice, and this detail as well as the presence of an intermediate, partially disordered, magnetic state below 1 K suggests interactions beyond the classical Heisenberg description of this material., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

The effect of high tensile strain and low dimensionality on the magnetic and electronic properties of CaMnO$_3$ ultrathin films, epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrates, are experimentally studied and theoretically analyzed. By means of ab initio calculations, we find that, both, the high strain produced by the substrate and the presence of the free surface contribute to the stabilization of an in-plane ferromagnetic coupling, giving rise to a non-zero net magnetic moment in the ultrathin films. Coupled with this change in the magnetic order we find an insulator-metal transition triggered by the quantum confinement and the tensile epitaxial strain. Accordingly, our magnetic measurements in 3nm ultrathin films show a ferromagnetic hysteresis loop, absent in the bulk compound due to its G-type antiferromagnetic structure.

Antiferromagnetically coupled S=1/2 spins on an isotropic triangular lattice is the paradigm of frustrated quantum magnetism, but structurally ideal realizations are rare. Here we investigate NaYbO$_2$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments with no inherent site disorder. No signatures of conventional magnetic order appear down to 50 mK, strongly suggesting a quantum spin liquid ground state. We observe a two-peak specific heat and a nearly quadratic temperature dependence in accord with expectations for a two-dimensional Dirac spin liquid. Application of a magnetic field strongly perturbs the quantum disordered ground state and induces a clear transition into a collinear ordered state consistent with a long-predicted up-up-down structure for a triangular lattice XXZ Hamiltonian driven by quantum fluctuations. The observation of spin liquid signatures in zero field and quantum-induced ordering in intermediate fields in the same compound demonstrate an intrinsically quantum disordered ground state. We conclude that NaYbO$_2$ is a model, versatile platform for exploring spin liquid physics with full tunability of field and temperature., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Spin excitations are explored in the electron-doped spin-orbit Mott insulator (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$. As this bilayer square lattice system is doped into the metallic regime, long-range antiferromagnetism vanishes, yet a spectrum of gapped spin excitation remains. Excitation lifetimes are strongly damped with increasing carrier concentration, and the energy integrated spectral weight becomes nearly momentum independent as static spin order is suppressed. Local magnetic moments, absent in the parent system, grow in metallic samples and approach values consistent with one $J=\frac{1}{2}$ impurity per electron doped. Our combined data suggest that the magnetic spectra of metallic (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ are best described by excitations out of a disordered dimer state., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures; 8 pages of supplementary material included as ancillary file

We report the experimental observation of quantized conductance by Rashba bands at the surface of 50-nm Bi nanowires. With increasing magnetic fields along the wire axis, the wires exhibit a stepwise increase of conductance with as many as four distinct plateaus together with oscillatory thermopower. The observations can be accounted for by the increase of the number of propagating surface modes. The modes have very high mobility and are associated with Aharonov-Bohm interference around the perimeter consistently with theory of quasiballistic one-dimensional nanowires considering that Lorentz forces decouple the modes from scattering at the nanowire surface., Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures

Recent developments in high-temperature superconductivity highlight a generic tendency of the cuprates to develop competing electronic (charge) supermodulations. While coupled to the lattice and showing different characteristics in different materials, these supermodulations themselves are generally conceived to be quasi-two-dimensional, residing mainly in individual CuO2 planes, and poorly correlated along the c-axis. Here we observed with resonant elastic x-ray scattering a distinct type of electronic supermodulation in YBa2Cu3O7-x (YBCO) thin films grown epitaxially on La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 (LCMO). This supermodulation has a periodicity nearly commensurate with four lattice constants in-plane, eight out-of-plane, with long correlation lengths in three dimensions. It sets in far above the superconducting transition temperature and competes with superconductivity below this temperature for electronic states predominantly in the CuO2 plane. Our finding sheds new light on the nature of charge ordering in cuprates as well as a reported long-range proximity effect between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in YBCO/LCMO heterostructures., Comment: Nature Communications, in press

We report on the magnetic properties of Eu$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ upon the application of hydrostatic pressure $P$ by means of macroscopic and local-probe techniques. In contrast to previously reported resistivity measurements, our dc magnetization data unambiguously demonstrate a non-monotonic $P$-dependence for $T_{N}$, i.~e., the critical transition temperature to the magnetic phase. More strikingly, we closely reproduce the recently calculated behaviour for $T_{N}$ under the assumption that $P$ lowers the $U/W$ ratio (i.~e., Coulomb repulsion energy over electronic bandwidth). Zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy measurements confirm that the local magnetic configuration is only weakly perturbed by low $P$ values, in agreement with theoretical predictions. The current results experimentally support the preservation of a $4$-in/$4$-out ground state and, simultaneously, a departure from the single-band $j_{\text{eff}} = 1/2$ model across the accessed region of the phase diagram., Comment: 13 pages (Main text: 6 pages. Ultrathin nanopore membranes based on 2D materials have demonstrated ultimate resolution toward DNA sequencing. Among them, molybdenum disulphide (MoS2) shows long-term stability as well as superior sensitivity enabling high throughput performance. The traditional method of fabricating nanopores with nanometer precision is based on the use of focused electron beams in transmission electron microscope (TEM). This nanopore fabrication process is time-consuming, expensive, not scalable and hard to control below 1 nm. Here, we exploited the electrochemical activity of MoS2 and developed a convenient and scalable method to controllably make nanopores in single-layer MoS2 with sub-nanometer precision using electrochemical reaction (ECR). The electrochemical reaction on the surface of single-layer MoS2 is initiated at the location of defects or single atom vacancy, followed by the successive removals of individual atoms or unit cells from single-layer MoS2 lattice and finally formation of a nanopore. Step-like features in the ionic current through the growing nanopore provide direct feedback on the nanopore size inferred from a widely used conductance vs. pore size model. Furthermore, DNA translocations can be detected in-situ when as-fabricated MoS2 nanopores are used. The atomic resolution and accessibility of this approach paves the way for mass production of nanopores in 2D membranes for potential solid-state nanopore sequencing., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

The structural and polar properties of BiFeO3 at finite temperature are investigated using an atomistic shell model fitted to first-principles calculations. Molecular Dynamics simulations show a direct transition from the low-temperature R3c ferroelectric phase to the Pbnm orthorhombic phase without evidence of any intermediate bridging phase between them. The high-temperature phase is characterized by the presence of two sublattices with opposite polarizations, and it displays the characteristic double-hysteresis loop under the action of an external electric field. The microscopic analysis reveals that the change in the polar direction and the large lattice strains observed during the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition originate from the interplay between polarization, oxygen octahedron rotations and strain. As a result, the induced ferroelectric phase recovers the symmetry of the low temperature R3c phase., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B

We present resistivity, magnetization, and zero field muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) data for the pyrochlore iridate materials Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($x = 0, 0.06$, and $0.10$) and Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. While Nd$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Nd227) is weakly conducting, Sm$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Sm227) has slowly diverging resistivity at low temperature. Nd227 and Sm227 exhibit magnetic anomalies at $T_{M} = 105 K$ and $137 K$, respectively. However, zero-field $\mu$SR measurements show that long-range magnetic order of the Ir$^{4+}$ sublattice sets in at much lower temperatures ($T_{LRO} \sim 8 K$ for Nd227 and $70 K$ for Sm227); both materials show heavily damped muon precession with a characteristic frequency near 9 MHz. The magnetic anomaly at $T_{M}$ in Nd227 is not significantly affected by the introduction of hole carriers by Ca-substitution in the conducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ samples, but the muon precession is fully suppressed for both.

Fermi-surface topology governs the relationship between magnetism and superconductivity in iron-based materials. Using low-temperature transport, angle-resolved photoemission, and x-ray diffraction we show unambiguous evidence of large Fermi surface reconstruction in CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at magnetic spin-density-wave and nonmagnetic collapsed-tetragonal ($cT$) transitions. For the $cT$ transition, the change in the Fermi surface topology has a different character with no contribution from the hole part of the Fermi surface. In addition, the results suggest that the pressure effect in CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is mainly leading to a rigid-band-like change of the valence electronic structure. We report $^{29}$Si NMR measurements in single crystals and aligned powders of URu$_2$Si$_2$ in the hidden order and paramagnetic phases. The spin-lattice-relaxation data reveal evidence of pseudospin fluctuations of U moments in the paramagnetic phase. We find evidence for partial suppression of the density of states below 30 K, and analyze the data in terms of a two component spin-fermion model. We propose that this behavior is a realization of a pseudogap between the hidden order transition $T_{HO}$ and 30 K. This behavior is then compared to other materials that demonstrate precursor fluctuations in a pseudogap regime above a ground state with long-range order., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

In their Letter, Haziot et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 110 (2013) 035301] report a novel phenomenon of giant plasticity for hcp Helium-4 quantum crystals. They assert that Helium-4 exhibits mechanical properties not found in classical plasticity theory. Specifically, they examine high-quality crystals as a function of temperature and applied strain, where the shear modulus reaches a plateau and dissipation becomes close to zero; both quantities are reported to be independent of stress and strain, implying a reversible dissipation process and quantum tunneling. In this Comment, we show that these signatures can be explained with a classical model of thermally activated dislocation glide without the need to invoke quantum tunneling or dissipationless motion. In this work we report the influence of intrinsic superconducting parameters on the vortex dynamics in an overdoped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (x=0.14) single crystal. We find a superconducting critical temperature of 13.5 K, magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_{ab}$(0) = 660 $\pm$ 50 nm, coherence length $\xi_{ab}$(0) = 5 nm, and the upper critical field anisotropy $\gamma_{T\rightarrow Tc}$ $\approx$ 3.7. In fact, the Ginzburg-Landau model may explain the angular dependent $H_{c2}$ for this anisotropic three-dimensional superconductor. The vortex phase diagram, in comparison with the optimally doped compound, presents a narrow collective creep regime. In addition, we found no sign of correlated pinning along the c axis. Our results show that vortex core to defect size ratio and $\lambda$ play an important role in the resulting vortex dynamics in materials with similar intrinsic thermal fluctuations.

We present magnetization and Hall effect measurements on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. Previous muon spin rotation measurements have shown that the system undergoes an unusual transition at T$_M$ = 110 K into a magnetic phase lacking long-range order, followed by a transition at T$_LRO$ = 6 K into a state with long-range magnetic order. We observe a small remnant magnetization when cycling through zero magnetic field at temperatures below T$_M$. Below T$_LRO$, this remnant magnetization increases sharply, and new hysteresis effects appear at a higher field B$_c$ = 2.5 T, while the Hall resistance develops a non-monotonic and hysteretic magnetic field dependence, with a maximum at B$_c$ and signatures of an anomalous Hall effect. The dependence on field sweep direction demonstrates a non-trivial transition into a magnetically ordered state with properties paralleling those of known spin-ice systems and suggests a spin reorientation transition across the metal insulator transition in the A-227 series.

We report on the dramatic effect of random point defects, produced by proton irradiation, on the superfluid density $\rho_{s}$ in superconducting Ca$_{0.5}$Na$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals. The magnitude of the suppression is inferred from measurements of the temperature-dependent magnetic penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ using magnetic force microscopy. Our findings indicate that a radiation dose of 2$\times10^{16}$cm$^{-2}$ produced by 3 MeV protons results in a reduction of the superconducting critical temperature $T_{c}$ by approximately 10%. % with no appreciable change in the slope of the upper critical fields. In contrast, $\rho_{s}(0)$ is suppressed by approximately 60%. This break-down of the Abrikosov-Gorkov theory may be explained by the so-called "Swiss cheese model", which accounts for the spatial suppression of the order parameter near point defects similar to holes in Swiss cheese. Both the slope of the upper critical field and the penetration depth $\lambda(T/T_{c})/\lambda(0)$ exhibit similar temperature dependences before and after irradiation. This may be due to a combination of the highly disordered nature of Ca$_{0.5}$Na$_{0.5}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ with large intraband and simultaneous interband scattering as well as the $s^\pm$-wave nature of short coherence length superconductivity.

We review the anomalous behavior of solid He-4 at low temperatures with particular attention to the role of structural defects present in solid. The discussion centers around the possible role of two level systems and structural glassy components for inducing the observed anomalies. We propose that the origin of glassy behavior is due to the dynamics of defects like dislocations formed in He-4. Within the developed framework of glassy components in a solid, we give a summary of the results and predictions for the effects that cover the mechanical, thermodynamic, viscoelastic, and electro-elastic contributions of the glassy response of solid He-4. Our proposed glass model for solid He-4 has several implications: (1) The anomalous properties of He-4 can be accounted for by allowing defects to freeze out at lowest temperatures. The dynamics of solid He-4 is governed by glasslike (glassy) relaxation processes and the distribution of relaxation times varies significantly between different torsional oscillator, shear modulus, and dielectric function experiments. (2) Any defect freeze-out will be accompanied by thermodynamic signatures consistent with entropy contributions from defects. It follows that such entropy contribution is much smaller than the required superfluid fraction, yet it is sufficient to account for excess entropy at lowest temperatures. (3) We predict a Cole-Cole type relation between the real and imaginary part of the response functions for rotational and planar shear that is occurring due to the dynamics of defects. Similar results apply for other response functions. (4) Using the framework of glassy dynamics, we predict low-frequency yet to be measured electro-elastic features in defect rich He-4 crystals. These predictions allow one to directly test the ideas and very presence of glassy contributions in He-4., Comment: 33 pages, 13 figures

We present measurements of magnetic field and frequency dependences of the low temperature (T = 1.8 K) AC-susceptibility, and temperature and field dependences of the longitudinal field positive muon spin relaxation ({\mu}SR) for LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$F$_4$ with x = 0.0017, 0.0085, 0.0408, and 0.0855. The fits of numerical simulations to the susceptibility data for the x = 0.0017, 0.0085 and 0.0408 show that Ho-Ho cross-relaxation processes become more important at higher concentrations, signaling the crossover from single-ion to correlated behavior. We simulate the muon spin depolarization using the parameters extracted from the susceptibility, and the simulations agree well with our data for samples with x = 0.0017 and 0.0085. The {\mu}SR data for samples with x = 0.0408 and 0.0855 at low temperatures (T < 10 K) cannot be described within a single-ion picture of magnetic field fluctuations and give evidence for additional mechanisms of depolarization due to Ho$^{3+}$ correlations. We also observe an unusual peak in the magnetic field dependence of the muon relaxation rate in the temperature interval 10 - 20 K that we ascribe to a modification of the Ho$^{3+}$ fluctuation rate due to a field induced shift of the energy gap between the ground and the first excited doublet crystal field states relative to a peak in the phonon density of states centered near 63 cm$^{-1}$., Comment: 33 pages, 9 figures; accepted for publication, Physical Review B

We present results from muon spin relaxation/rotation, magnetization, neutron scattering and transport measurements on polycrystalline samples of the pyrochlore iridates Y2Ir2O7 (Y-227) and Yb2Ir2O7 (Yb-227). Well-defined spontaneous oscillations of the muon asymmetry are observed together with hysteretic behavior in magnetization below 130 K in Yb-227, indicative of commensurate long-range magnetic order. Similar oscillations are observed in Y-227 below 150 K; however the onset of hysteretic magnetization at T = 190 K indicates a transition to an intermediate state lacking long-range order as observed in Nd-227. Our results also show that insulating members of the iridate family have nearly identical magnetic ground states, and that the presence of magnetic A-site species does not play any significant role in altering the ground state properties.

Density functional theory calculations of the electronic structure of Ce- and Pu-based heavy fermion superconductors in the so-called 115 family are performed. The gap equation is used to consider which superconducting order parameters are most favorable assuming a pairing interaction that is peaked at (\pi,\pi,q_z) - the wavevector for the antiferromagnetic ordering found in close proximity. In addition to the commonly accepted $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameter, there is evidence that an extended s-wave order parameter with nodes is also plausible. We report a combined muon spin relaxation/rotation, bulk magnetization, neutron scattering, and transport study of the electronic properties of the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. We observe the onset of strongly hysteretic behavior in the temperature dependent magnetization below 120 K, and an abrupt increase in the temperature dependent resistivity below 8 K. Zero field muon spin relaxation measurements show that the hysteretic magnetization is driven by a transition to a magnetically disordered state, and that below 8 K a complex magnetically ordered ground state sets in, as evidenced by the onset of heavily damped spontaneous muon precession. Our measurements point toward the absence of a true metal-to-insulator phase transition in this material and suggest that Nd2Ir2O7 lies either within or on the metallic side of the boundary of the Dirac semimetal regime within its topological phase diagram., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures

We have studied polycrystalline Yb4LiGe4, a ternary variant of the R5T4 family of layered compounds characterized by a very strong coupling between the magnetic and crystallographic degrees of freedom. The system is mixed valent, with non-magnetic Yb2+ and magnetic Yb3+ present, and is characterized by coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations. We present measurements of resistivity, AC-susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation (muSR), below 1 K. The low temperature measurements suggest a transition to a mesoscopically inhomogeneous magnetically ordered state below 2 K characterized by fluctuations well below the ordering temperature. This unusual state is believed to result from the enhanced two-dimensionality produced by Li substitution and frustration effects inherent in the Yb sub-lattice geometry., Comment: 29 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication, Physical Review B

Superconductivity is observed in a composite of rhombohedral crystalline bismuth nanoparticles imbedded in an insulating porous opal host via electrical transport and AC magnetic susceptibility. The onset of superconductivity in this system occurs in two steps, with upper critical temperature Tc,U = 4.1 K and lower transition temperature of Tc,L = 0.7 K, which we attribute to the granular nature of the composite. The transition at Tc,U is observed to split into two transitions with the application of a magnetic field, and has upper critical field extrapolated to T = 0 K of Hc2,1(0) = 0.7 T and Hc2,2(0) = 1.0 T, corresponding to coherence lengths of xi1(0) = 21 nm and xi2(0) = 18 nm, respectively. We suggest that because of the lack of bulk-like states in the Bi nanoparticles due to confinement effects, superconductivity originates from surface states arising from Rashba spin-orbit scattering at the interface. This prospect suggests that nanostructured Bi may be an interesting system to search for Majorana fermions., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

Nanostructured composites and nanowire arrays of traditional thermoelectrics like Bi, Bi(1-x)Sb(x) and Bi(2)Te(3) have metallic Rashba surface spin-orbit bands featuring high mobilities rivaling that of the bulk for which topological insulator behavior has been proposed. Nearly pure surface electronic transport has been observed at low temperatures in Bi nanowires with diameter around the critical diameter, 50 nm, for the semimetal-to semiconductor transition. The surface contributes strongly to the thermopower, actually dominating for temperatures T < 100 K in these nanowires. The surface thermopower was found to be -1 T microvolt/(K^2), a value that is consistent with theory. We show that surface electronic transport together with boundary phonon scattering leads to enhanced thermoelectric performance at low temperatures of Bi nanowire arrays. We compare with bulk n-BiSb alloys, optimized CsBi(4)Te(6) and optimized Bi(2)Te(3). Using a high-sensitivity torsional oscillator technique, we mapped the rotational and relaxational dynamics of solid helium-4 throughout the parameter range of the proposed supersolidity. We found evidence that the same microscopic excitations controlling the torsional oscillator motions are generated independently by thermal and mechanical stimulation. Moreover, a measure for the relaxation times of these excitations diverges smoothly without any indication for a critical temperature or critical velocity of a supersolid transition. Finally, we demonstrated that the combined temperature-velocity dependence of the TO response is indistinguishable from the combined temperature-strain dependence of the solid's shear modulus. This implies that the rotational responses of solid helium-4 attributed to supersolidity are associated with generation of the same microscopic excitations as those produced by direct shear strain., Comment: 27 pages with 4 main figures and 7 supplemental figures

Inhomogeneous electronic states resulting from entangled spin, charge, and lattice degrees of freedom are hallmarks of strongly correlated electron materials; such behavior has been observed in many classes of d-electron materials, including the high-Tc copper-oxide superconductors, manganites, and most recently the iron-pnictide superconductors. The complexity generated by competing phases in these materials constitutes a considerable theoretical challenge-one that still defies a complete description. Here, we report a new manifestation of electronic inhomogeneity in a strongly correlated f-electron system, using CeCoIn5 as an example. A thermodynamic analysis of its superconductivity, combined with nuclear quadrupole resonance measurements, shows that nonmagnetic impurities (Y, La, Yb, Th, Hg and Sn) locally suppress unconventional superconductivity, generating an inhomogeneous electronic "Swiss cheese" due to disrupted periodicity of the Kondo lattice. Our analysis may be generalized to include related systems, suggesting that electronic inhomogeneity should be considered broadly in Kondo lattice materials., Comment: 27 pages

Many thermoelectrics like Bi exhibit Rashba spin-orbit surface bands for which topological insulator behavior consisting of ultrahigh mobilities and enhanced thermopower has been predicted. Bi nanowires realize surface-only electronic transport since they become bulk insulators when they undergo the bulk semimetal-semiconductor transition as a result of quantum confinement for diameters close to 50 nm. We studied 20-, 30-, 50- and 200-nm trigonal Bi wires. Shubnikov-de Haas magnetoresistance oscillations caused by surface electrons and bulklike holes enable the determination of their densities and mobilities. Surface electrons have high mobilities exceeding 2(m^2)/(Vsec) and contribute strongly to the thermopower, dominating for temperatures T< 100 K. The surface thermopower is - 1.2 T microvolt/(K^2), a value that is consistent with theory, raising the prospect of developing nanoscale thermoelectrics based on surface bands., Comment: 19 pages. 3 figures

We present zero-field {\mu}SR measurements for LiY$_{1-x}$Ho$_{x}$F$_{4}$ samples with x = 0.0017, 0.0085, 0.0406, and 0.0855. We characterize the dynamics associated with the formation of the (F-{\mu}-F)$^{-1}$ complex by comparing our data to Monte Carlo simulations to determine the concentration range over which the spin dynamics are determined primarily by the Ho$^{3+}$-{\mu} interaction rather than the F-{\mu} interaction. Simulations show that F-{\mu}-F oscillations should evolve into a Lorentzian Kubo-Toyabe decay for an increasing static magnetic field distribution {\Gamma} (i.e., increasing x), but the data do not show this behavior, consistent with the recently reported existence of strong magnetic fluctuations in this system at low temperatures. Anisotropy in the field distribution is shown to cause small errors of order 10% from behavior predicted for an isotropic distribution. Finally, numerical calculations show that values of {\Gamma} calculated in the single ion limit greatly exceed the values extracted from curve fits, suggesting that strong correlations play an important role in this system.

A vortex crossing a thin-film superconducting strip from one edge to the other, perpendicular to the bias current, is the dominant mechanism of dissipation for films of thickness d on the order of the coherence length XI; and of width w much narrower than the Pearl length LAMBDA >> w >> XI. At high bias currents, I* < I < Ic, the heat released by the crossing of a single vortex suffices to create a belt-like normal-state region across the strip, resulting in a detectable voltage pulse. Here Ic is the critical current at which the energy barrier vanishes for a single vortex crossing. The belt forms along the vortex path and causes a transition of the entire strip into the normal state. We estimate I* to be roughly Ic/3. Further, we argue that such "hot" vortex crossings are the origin of dark counts in photon detectors, which operate in the regime of metastable superconductivity at currents between I* and Ic. We estimate the rate of vortex crossings and compare it with recent experimental data for dark counts. For currents below I*, i.e., in the stable superconducting but resistive regime, we estimate the amplitude and duration of voltage pulses induced by a single vortex crossing., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

Magnetization, AC susceptibility and $\mu$SR measurements have been performed in neutral phthalocyaninato lanthanide ([LnPc$_2]^0$) single molecule magnets in order to determine the low-energy levels structure and to compare the low-frequency spin excitations probed by means of macroscopic techniques, such as AC susceptibility, with the ones explored by means of techniques of microscopic character, such as $\mu$SR. Both techniques show a high temperature thermally activated regime for the spin dynamics and a low temperature tunneling one. While in the activated regime the correlation times for the spin fluctuations estimated by AC susceptibility and $\mu$SR basically agree, clear discrepancies are found in the tunneling regime. In particular, $\mu$SR probes a faster dynamics with respect to AC susceptibility. It is argued that the tunneling dynamics probed by $\mu$SR involves fluctuations which do not yield a net change in the macroscopic magnetization probed by AC susceptibiliy. Finally resistivity measurements in [TbPc$_2]^0$ crystals show a high temperature nearly metallic behaviour and a low temperature activated behaviour., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

We study, within the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory of phase transitions, how elastic deformations in a supersolid lead to local changes in the supersolid transition temperature. The GL theory is mapped onto a Schrodinger-type equation with an effective potential that depends on local dilatory strain. The effective potential is attractive for local contractions and repulsive for local expansion. Different types of elastic deformations are studied. We find that a contraction (expansion) of the medium that may be brought about by, e.g., applied stress leads to a higher (lower) transition temperature as compared to the unstrained medium. In addition, we investigate edge dislocations and illustrate that the local transition temperature may be increased in the immediate vicinity of the dislocation core. Recent Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and elastic neutron scattering experiments have revealed conclusively the presence of static incommensurate magnetism in the field-induced B phase of CeCoIn5. We analyze the NMR data assuming the hyperfine coupling to the In(2) nuclei is anisotropic and simulate the spectra for several different magnetic structures. The NMR data are consistent with ordered Ce moments along the [001] direction, but are relatively insensitive to the direction of the incommensurate wavevector., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We calculated the glassy response of solid He-4 to torsional oscillations assuming a phenomenological glass model. Making only a few assumptions about the distribution of glassy relaxation times in a small subsystem of otherwise rigid solid He-4, we can account for the magnitude of the observed period shift and concomitant dissipation peak in several torsion oscillator experiments. The implications of the glass model for solid He-4 are threefold: (1) The dynamics of solid He-4 is governed by glassy relaxation processes. (2) The distribution of relaxation times varies significantly between different torsion oscillator experiments. (3) The mechanical response of a torsion oscillator does not require a supersolid component to account for the observed anomaly at low temperatures, though we cannot rule out its existence., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, presented at QFS2009

We report the use of impurities to probe the hidden order parameter of the strongly correlated metal URu_2Si_2 below the transition temperature T_0 ~ 17.5 K. The nature of this order parameter has eluded researchers for more than two decades, but is accompanied by the development of a partial gap in the single particle density of states that can be detected through measurements of the electronic specific heat and nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate. We find that impurities in the hidden order phase give rise to local patches of antiferromagnetism. An analysis of the coupling between the antiferromagnetism and the hidden order reveals that the former is not a competing order parameter but rather a parasitic effect of the latter., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Whereas bulk bismuth supports very-high mobility, light, Dirac electrons and holes in its interior, its boundaries support a layer of heavy electrons in surface states formed by spin orbit interaction in the presence of the surface electric field. Small diameter d trigonal Bi nanowires (30 nm < d < 200 nm) were studied via magnetotransport at low temperatures and for fields up to 14 T in order to investigate the role of surfaces in electronic transport. A two-dimensional behavior was expected for surface charges; however we found instead a three-dimensional behavior, with a rich spectrum of Landau levels in a nearly spherical Fermi surface. This is associated with the long penetration length of surface states of trigonal wires. The prospect of the participation of surface transport and surface-induced relaxation of bulk carriers in the electronic properties of macroscopic samples is evaluated. We show that recent observations of magnetoquantum peaks in the Nernst thermopower coefficient, attributed to two-dimensional electron gas charge fractionalization, can be more plausibly interpreted in terms of these surface states., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Solid He-4 is viewed as a nearly perfect Debye solid. Yet, recent calorimetry measurements by the PSU group (J. Low Temp. Phys. 138, 853 (2005) and Nature 449, 1025 (2007)) indicate that at low temperatures the specific heat has both cubic and linear contributions. These features appear in the same temperature range where measurements of the torsional oscillator period suggest a supersolid transition. We analyze the specific heat and compare the measured with the estimated entropy for a proposed supersolid transition with 1% superfluid fraction and find that the observed entropy is too small. We suggest that the low-temperature linear term in the specific heat is due to a glassy state that develops at low temperatures and is caused by a distribution of tunneling systems in the crystal. We propose that dislocation related defects produce those tunneling systems. Further, we argue that the reported putative mass decoupling, that means an increase in the oscillator frequency, is consistent with a glass-like transition. The glass scenario offers an alternative interpretation of the torsional oscillator experiments in contrast to the supersolid scenario of nonclassical rotational inertia., Comment: Presented at LT-25, Amsterdam 2008

Temperature and magnetic field dependences of the 19F nuclear spin-lattice relaxation in a single crystal of LiYF4 doped with holmium are described by an approach based on a detailed consideration of the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions between nuclei and impurity paramagnetic ions and nuclear spin diffusion processes. The observed non-exponential long time recovery of the nuclear magnetization after saturation at intermediate temperatures is in agreement with predictions of the spin-diffusion theory in a case of the diffusion limited relaxation. At avoided level crossings in the spectrum of electron-nuclear states of the Ho3+ ion, rates of nuclear spin-lattice relaxation increase due to quasi-resonant energy exchange between nuclei and paramagnetic ions, in contrast to the predominant role played by electronic cross-relaxation processes in the low-frequency ac-susceptibility., Comment: 27 pages total, 5 figures, accepted for publication, Eur. We calculate the Pauli-limited upper critical field and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) instability for {\it dirty} d-wave superconductors within the quasiclassical theory using the self-consistent $\hat{t}$-matrix approximation for impurities. We find that the phase diagram depends sensitively on the scattering rate and phase shift of nonmagnetic impurities. The transition into the superconducting state is always second order for weak (Born) scattering, while in the unitarity (strong) scattering limit a first-order transition into both uniform and spatially modulated superconducting states is stabilized. Contrary to general belief, we find that the FFLO phase is robust against disorder and survives impurity scattering equivalent to a $T_c$ suppression of roughly 40%. Atomic-vapor density change due to light induced atomic desorption (LIAD) is studied in paraffin-coated rubidium, cesium, sodium and potassium cells. In the present experiment, low-intensity probe light is used to obtain an absorption spectrum and measure the vapor density, while light from an argon-ion laser, array of light emitting diodes, or discharge lamp is used for desorption. Potassium is found to exhibit significantly weaker LIAD from paraffin compared to Rb and Cs, and we were unable to observe LIAD with sodium. A simple LIAD model is applied to describe the observed vapor-density dynamics, and the role of the cell's stem is explored through the use of cells with lockable stems. Stabilization of Cs vapor density above its equilibrium value over 25 minutes is demonstrated. The results of this work could be used to assess the use of LIAD for vapor-density control in magnetometers, clocks, and gyroscopes utilizing coated cells., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

Superconductivity develops from an attractive interaction between itinerant electrons that creates electron pairs which condense into a macroscopic quantum state--the superconducting state. On the other hand, magnetic order in a metal arises from electrons localized close to the ionic core and whose interaction is mediated by itinerant electrons. The dichotomy between local moment magnetic order and superconductivity raises the question of whether these two states can coexist and involve the same electrons. Here we show that the single 4f-electron of cerium in CeRhIn5 simultaneously produces magnetism, characteristic of localization, and superconductivity that requires itinerancy. The dual nature of the 4f-electron allows microscopic coexistence of antiferromagnetic order and superconductivity whose competition is tuned by small changes in pressure and magnetic field. Electronic duality contrasts with conventional interpretations of coexisting spin-density magnetism and superconductivity and offers a new avenue for understanding complex states in classes of materials., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

We have studied the Ho3+ spin dynamics for LiY0.998Ho0.002F4 through the positive muon (mu+) transverse field depolarization rate lambda_TF as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We find sharp reductions in lambda_TF(H) at fields of 23, 46 and 69 mT, for which the Ho3+ ion system has field-induced (avoided) level crossings. The reduction scales with calculated level repulsions, suggesting that mu+ depolarization by slow fluctuations of non-resonant Ho3+ spin states is partially suppressed when resonant tunneling opens new fluctuation channels at frequencies much greater than the muon precession frequency., Comment: 18 pages, with 4 figures

We have measured the temperature dependence and magnitude of the superfluid density $\rho_{\rm s}(T)$ via the magnetic field penetration depth $\lambda(T)$ in PuCoGa$_5$ (nominal critical temperature $T_{c0} = 18.5$ K) using the muon spin rotation technique in order to investigate the symmetry of the order parameter, and to study the effects of aging on the superconducting properties of a radioactive material. The same single crystals were measured after 25 days ($T_c = 18.25$ K) and 400 days ($T_c = 15.0$ K) of aging at room temperature. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density is well described in both materials by a model using d-wave gap symmetry. The magnitude of the muon spin relaxation rate $\sigma$ in the aged sample, $\sigma\propto 1/\lambda^2\propto\rho_s/m^*$, where $m^*$ is the effective mass, is reduced by about 70% compared to fresh sample. This indicates that the scattering from self-irradiation induced defects is not in the limit of the conventional Abrikosov-Gor'kov pair-breaking theory, but rather in the limit of short coherence length (about 2 nm in PuCoGa$_5$) superconductivity., Comment: 11 pages

We report the observation of a dependence of the low temperature resistance of individual single-crystal bismuth nanowires on the Aharonov-Bohm phase of the magnetic flux threading the wire. 55 and 75-nm wires were investigated in magnetic fields of up to 14 T. For 55 nm nanowires, longitudinal magnetoresistance periods of 0.8 and 1.6 T that were observed at magnetic fields over 4 T are assigned to h/2e to h/e magnetic flux modulation. The same modes of oscillation were observed in 75-nm wires. The observed effects are consistent with models of the Bi surface where surface states give rise to a significant population of charge carriers of high effective mass that form a highly conducting tube around the nanowire. In the 55-nm nanowires, the Fermi energy of the surface band is estimated to be 15 meV. An interpretation of the magnetoresistance oscillations in terms of a subband structure in the surface states band due to quantum interference in the tube is presented., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures

A decrease in the rotational period observed in torsional oscillator measurements was recently taken as a possible indication of a supersolid state of helium. We reexamine this interpretation and note that the decrease in the rotation period is also consistent with a solidification of a small liquid-like component into a low-temperature glass. Such a solidification may occur by a low-temperature quench of topological defects (e.g., grain boundaries or dislocations) which we examined in an earlier work. The low-temperature glass can account for not only a monotonic decrease in the rotation period as the temperature is lowered but also explains the peak in the dissipation occurring near the transition point. Unlike the non-classical rotational inertia scenario, which depends on the supersolid fraction, the dependence of the rotational period on external parameters, e.g., the oscillator velocity, provides an alternate interpretation of the oscillator experiments.
