Reflecting potential non-linearities of converter-based systems, especially frequency and sequence couplings, is an ongoing challenge for linearized multi-frequency models. Besides, design details are required to develop such models, which either are the intellectual property of manufacturers or require experimental tests. The generic multi-frequency modelling method has been proposed to fill this gap; however, it is only developed for converter-connected systems, e.g., Type 4 Wind Turbines (WT). This paper proposes to extend the application of the generic multi-frequency modelling method for Type 3 WTs. In this way, a theory for patterns of the couplings in Type 3 WTs is proposed. Accordingly, a group of emissions and couplings are Rotor-Speed-Dependent (RSD). The RSD emissions and couplings are particular characteristics of Type 3 WTs, which should be addressed in the generic multi-frequency models. The proposed theory is verified by unique-worldwide experimental perturbation tests on a 2 MVA Type 3 WT using a 7 MVA grid emulator. Accordingly, a limited number of RSD couplings and emissions are observed in the test results, mainly in low frequencies (below 1 kHz). Therefore, addressing the RSD couplings is practical and important to extend the generic multi-frequency modelling for Type 3 WTs.

Frequency and sequence couplings can compromise the trustworthiness of multi-frequency models for converter-based systems. There have been effective attempts to address the couplings mainly by linearized averaged models. Only a few studies have been conducted on practical optimization of such models with enormous matrices and experimental results. This paper provides a generic theory for coupling patterns and proposes a multi-frequency modelling method to detect and address only the main couplings in the sequence domain for converter-connected renewable energy generators. The proposed generic model is based on empirical tests using small-signal perturbations and adopting Fourier transform on the switching converter response. The proposed theory and modelling methodology are verified using a 7MVA grid emulator for voltage perturbation tests on a 2MVA photo-voltaic converter. Accordingly, the couplings can exist in more generic forms, including multiples of perturbation and fundamental frequencies. To the best of our knowledge, the patterns with the multiples of the perturbation frequency have been overlooked in the literature. Furthermore, the mirror frequency concept is valid for all coupling patterns and is included in the proposed model. Besides, the proposed patterns and the environment noise levels have been practical criteria for selecting the main couplings.

Providing trustworthy and accurate multi-frequency (or harmonic) models for Renewable Energy Generators (REG) is an ongoing challenge for harmonic studies. There have been effective attempts to propose and design a test device to validate the harmonic models, mainly based on shunt current perturbations. However, using additional devices for perturbations is costly for converter-based test sites. This paper provides the test specifications to extend the application of the grid emulators for voltage perturbations and appropriate harmonic model validation. Besides, the effects of the sequence couplings, initial emissions, and power set-points on the test results have been overlooked in the literature. Considering these effects, this paper proposes a generic test methodology to obtain more accurate models in the sequence domain. The experimental verification of the proposed methodology is demonstrated using a 7 MVA grid emulator for testing of a 2 MVA photo-voltaic converter and a 2 MVA Type 3 wind turbine. This way, the test challenges, specifications, and recommendations are presented using the MW-scale experiments on different REGs. Furthermore, the effects of sequence couplings and initial emissions on the calculation results are investigated and compared. The proposed methodology is applicable for harmonic model validation as well as empirical modelling.

The electrical test and assessment of wind turbines (WT) are going hand in hand with standards and network connection requirements. In this paper, the latest developments in the testing of the electrical characteristics of WTs, including IEC standards, compliance test methods, and industrial test benches, are studied. In this paper, the general structure of advanced electrical test benches, including grid emulator or controllable grid interface (CGI), wind torque emulator and device under test (DUT), has been proposed to harmonize the available industrial test sites. The AC and HVDC transmission systems impose different electrical characteristics on wind power plants (WPP). HVDC connection leads to a converter-based grid, yet AC connection has different grid characteristics in terms of grid impedance, short circuit ratio (SCR), inertia, and background harmonics. Therefore, this paper recommends performing compliance tests in two divisions as AC- and HVDC-connected WTs using a converter-based CGI and emulate the corresponding AC grid for DUT. Also, this paper recommends the additional tests for the current version of IEC 61400-21-1. The additional tests consist of test options for new features of modernWTs, such as Grid-forming, system restoration, and black start capabilities, as well as emulation of different grid characteristics, such as detailed power system, inertia, SCR, and different grid connection emulations for DUT. This way, the possibility of research, development, and demonstration studies on WTs and WPPs would increase. The proposed additional tests can be implemented using the available advanced test benches by adjusting their control systems. Since most of the industrial test benches are based on converters, the characteristics of a real power system can be emulated by a CGI coupled with real-time digital simulator (RTDS) systems through high-bandwidth power-hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) interface.

The short circuit response of voltage source converters (VSCs) could be significantly different from that of synchronous condensers (SCs) under unbalanced faults. This paper investigates the combined effect of VSC-based sources and synchronous condensers under grid unbalanced faults considering two groups of VSC fault-ride-through (FRT) control strategies. It aims to provide an evaluation of the different control strategies and to explore the impact of equipping a synchronous condenser at the point of common coupling (PCC). By examining the combined short circuit currents, PCC voltages, DC-side voltages and system frequency responses, this study points out the merits and demerits of the examined control strategies; illustrates the benefits of synchronous condensers on mitigating the disadvantages of certain control strategies; and provides suggestions on selecting the control strategies for the VSC when incorporating a synchronous condenser at the PCC.

With converter-based renewable energy sources increasingly integrated into power systems and conventional power plants gradually phased out, future power systems will experience reduced short circuit strength. The deployment of synchronous condensers can serve as a potential solution. This paper presents an optimal synchronous condenser allocation method for improving system short circuit ratio at converter point of common coupling using a modified short circuit analysis approach. The total cost of installing new synchronous condensers is minimized while the system short circuit ratios are maintained above a certain level. The presented method is implemented on the simplified western Danish power system for a future scenario.

Most European countries have concerns about the integration of large amounts of renewable energy sources (RES) into electric power systems, and this is currently a topic of growing interest. In January 2008, the European Commission published the 2020 package, which proposes committing the European Union to a 20% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, to achieve a target of deriving 20% of the European Union's final energy consumption from renewable sources, and to achieve 20% improvement in energy efficiency both by the year 2020 [1]. Member states have different individual goals to meet these overall objectives, and they each need to provide a detailed roadmap describing how they will meet these legally binding targets [2]. At this time, RES are an indispensable part of the global energy mix, which has been partially motivated by the continuous increases in hydropower as well as the rapid expansion of wind and solar photovoltaic (PV). The International Energy Agency's 2012 edition of the World Energy Outlook stated that the rapid increases in RES integration are underpinned by falling technology costs as well as rising fossilfuel prices and carbon pricing, but RES integration is also encouraged by continued subsidies: from $88 billion globally in 2011 (compared to $523 billion in fossil-fuel subsidies in 2012 [3], with a share of $131 billion for electricity generation) to an estimated $240 billion in 2035 [4]. According to [3], in 2015 RES accounted for 22% of electricity generation, which was approximately the same level as gas and about one-half the level of coal.
