Se scorriamo le pagine più significative della biografia di Giovanni Gentile, non si può trascurare l’arco di tempo nel corso del quale si avvia e si consolida l’amicizia con Benedetto Croce. A questo proposito occorre porre in rilievo i quattro anni trascorsi presso la Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, ove il giovane, diplomatosi presso il liceo classico Ximenes di Trapani, conseguì la laurea in filosofia con la tesi su Rosmini e Gioberti seguita da Donato Jaja. Perciò il 1897 può e deve essere considerato come punto di inizio di una lunga carriera di filosofo, che avrebbe attraversato varie fasi della storia della cultura italiana. A dire il vero, ancora nel 1896, il giovane proveniente da Castelvetrano non aveva maturato in termini definitivi la decisione se laurearsi in lettere con Alessandro D’Ancona o in filosofia con Donato Jaja

L’anno in cui Giovanni Gentile giunse a Palermo, come titolare della cattedra di Storia della filosofia nell’Università degli Studi, rappresenta un momento particolare per l’intera cultura nazionale proiettata nel contesto della cultura europea. L’anno accademico 1906-07 risulta essere l’avvio dell’intensa ed articolata carriera accademica di colui che, dopo avere vissuto gli anni della fanciullezza tra Campobello di Mazara e Castelvetrano, nell’ottobre del 1893 sostenne gli esami di maturità classica a Trapani. Sicché, avendo superato (nello stesso anno 1893) la selezione per accedere alla Scuola Superiore Normale di Pisa, nel mese di luglio del 1897 prese la laurea in Filosofia con la tesi su Rosmini e Gioberti seguita da Donato Jaja. Nello stesso anno 1897, scrisse il saggio Una critica del materialismo storico, per l’acquisizione dell’abilitazione all’insegnamento di filosofia nella scuola. Nel 1898, frequentò un corso di perfezionamento in filosofia presso l’Istituto di Studi Superiori di Firenze svolgendo la tesi dal titolo Dal Genovesi al Galluppi. In tal modo evidenziò il suo interesse per la storia della filosofia italiana, ampliando i propri orizzonti culturali con l’attenzione prestata al materialismo storico di Marx, così come si evince dal contenuto della monografia specificamente intitolata La filosofia di Marx data alle stampe nel 1899.

L’articolo pone in luce il ruolo e l’importanza che l’Istituto di Fisiologia della Facoltà di Medicina dell’Università di Palermo ha avuto, attraverso le figure di Simone Corleo e Umberto Saffiotti, per l’origine, l’affermazione e lo sviluppo della psicologia ‘scientifica’ in Italia tra Ottocento e Novecento. Corleo, pur insegnando discipline filosofiche, da giovane aveva conseguito una laurea in Medicina, che gli aveva consentito di organizzare, negli anni 1889-1890, un Gabinetto di psicologia sperimentale in collaborazione con il Gabinetto di fisiologia umana; un’impresa che gli aveva permesso di definire la sua psicologia come psicofisica e di aprire la strada alla nuova scienza psicologica, oltre a svolgere un ruolo di primo piano nel contesto della cultura italiana di fine Ottocento. Alla sua morte, avvenuta nel 1891, l’esperienza del Laboratorio non fu dispersa, poiché rimase nella tradizione dell’Ateneo palermitano. Dopo di lui, infatti, dal 1919 al 1926 la Psicologia sperimentale fu insegnata da Saffiotti, che aveva ripreso i rapporti con l’Istituto di Fisiologia diretto da Francesco Spallitta, un medico che da giovane aveva collaborato con Corleo e aveva agevolato la nascita e l’evoluzione della psicologia sperimentale in stretta relazione con la fisiologia umana. Corleo, Saffiotti e Spallitta, pertanto, meritano di essere ricordati tra gli artefici di una importante stagione scientifico-culturale fiorita a Palermo alle soglie del XX secolo.

Simone Corleo fa parte della serie di autori che, nel corso del secolo XIX, ha contribuito all’inserimento della fi losofia prodotta nell’Ateneo di Palermo nel vasto e articolato panorama della cultura italiana ed europea. A questo proposito, scorrendo a ritroso l’indice di una virtuale storia del pensiero filosofico e scientifico, dovremmo richiamarci, oltre che alla tradizione della Scuola di Vincenzo Miceli prodotta a Monreale sul fi nire del secolo XVIII, ai contributi dati soprattutto da Salvatore Mancino e da Benedetto D’Acquisto. Mancino, dopo avere pubblicato i due volumi degli Elementi di fi losofi a nel 1835-36, aveva tenuto la cattedra di Metafisica e Logica nell’Università degli Studi di Palermo dal 1836 al 1863; D’Acquisto, autore pure lui di un’opera di Elementi di filosofia fondamentale (editi in quattro volumi tra il 1835 ed il 1871), insegnò Diritto di natura ed etica sempre nell’Università di Palermo tra il 1843 ed il 1858 (anno in cui fu nominato arcivescovo di Monreale da papa Pio IX).

Objectives. We based our study on 2 aspects: (i) the interest in the functional role of oscillatory brain activity in specific frequency bands and the coherence analysis between EEG traces; (ii) the increasing use of non-invasive stimulation of the human brain via transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). The aim of the study was to assess the potential effects of the combination of these two lines of research on a group of patients in vegetative state (VS). Materials. Five patients in VS and 5 age-matched healthy controls received anodal tDCS over the central (C3), parietal (P3), dorso-lateral prefrontal areas (DLPF), and a sham stimulation. tDCS was applied for 20 min at 200 microA. 19 channels-EEG was recorded before and after each stimulation session. Method. EEG was filtered between 0.5 and 30 Hz by elliptic filters. Fast Fourier Transformation was performed on 2 sec-epochs. For each stimulation site, coherence values were estimated within four frequency bands: Delta (0.5- 3.5 Hz), Theta (4-7.5 Hz), Alpha (8-12.5 Hz), and Beta (13-30 Hz). Each coherence map was proportionally thresholded, preserving 50% of the strongest coherence values, to produce a weighted adjacency matrix. The estimated functional connectivity patterns were characterized by means of two global network metrics derived from graph theory: modularity and global efficiency. Modularity measures how the network is organized into modules with high level clustering. Global efficiency measures how efficient the network is in exchanging information at the global level. For each frequency band and site of effective stimulation, we performed a repeated measure analysis of variance (RMANOVA) on each graph measure, using Stimulation (Effective vs. Sham) and tDCS (Pre vs. Post) as factors. Results. RM-ANOVA computed on modularity in the alpha frequency band revealed a significant interaction between the factors Stimulation and tDCS (p = .035) when applying tDCS on DLPF of healthy participants. Two paired t-tests revealed a significant increase of the network modularity (pre tDCS: .16 ± .007; post tDCS: .21 ± .014) when stimulating in DLPF (p = .009) compared to SHAM (p = .76). No significant effect was revealed on other frequency bands and stimulation site on both healthy participants and VS patients. Discussion. The tDCS-related modifications of the coherence in the alpha frequencies after DLPF stimulation could indicate that the alpha range is important to transmit information between cortical areas in healthy controls. The increased modularity suggests that the coherently synchronous alpha activities can occur within different modular brain areas and appear substantially independent of one another. This mechanism seems to be lack in VS patients. Conclusion. Our preliminary study revealed that tDCS but not sham stimulation elevates EEG alpha power and thus demonstrates the feasibility of tDCS to modulate specific oscillatory brain activity. tDCS could be considered a powerful tool for diagnosis/prognosis in altered state of consciousness.

L’autore esamina il ruolo dell’embriologia nell’epistemologia e nella medicina cartesiane e il senso del suo anti-finalismo.

Volendo porre a confronto la filosofia prodotta in Italia a cavaliere dei secoli XIX e XX con le varie scienze umane, non si può non fare riferimento alla psicologia, alla pedagogia, all’antropologia e alla sociologia, ma anche alla storia. Il dibattito svoltosi sul rapporto tra storia e filosofia o tra storia della filosofia e filosofia, in questa circostanza, risulta fondamentale. Dalla Prolusione (Il concetto della storia della filosofia), letta a Palermo il 10 gennaio del 1907, si desume che Gentile ha recuperato la dimensione fi lologica e storica di una disciplina (la filosofia) per troppo tempo ritenuta avulsa dal contesto della storia. In tal senso la filosofia è stata identificata con la storia della filosofia e questa con quella, in un panorama culturale che riconosce la filosofia come atto puro, ma in relazione al soggetto umano che si rapporta alla realtà di cui fa parte e all’interno della quale occupa una posizione centrale.

Beyond being the father of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud is an author who gave a relevant contribute to many Humanities and scientific disciplines. On this note, it’s interesting to remember the attention he paid to Aesthetics, compared to the Old Testament biblical tradition and history. The reference texts are: Michelangelo’s Moses, Moses as a Man, and the monotheistic religion, though they were written in two different periods of Freud’s production. In this sense, Michelangelo’s Moses, written in 1913, allows to find the elaboration of an aesthetic theory with a precise psychoanalytic and social connotation. Thus, psychoanalysis integrates with Humanities, beyond Aesthetics.

Quando Giovanni Gentile giunse a Palermo, per assumere la titolarità della cattedra di Storia della filosofia nella Facoltà di Lettere e filosofia, a partire dall’anno accademico 1906-07, trovò un ambiente che aveva già consolidato una certa tradizione sia sul versante della cultura umanistica che su quello della cultura scientifica. Per ciò che attiene alla filosofia in senso stretto, occorre sottolineare che ad inizio del Novecento, a Palermo, la cattedra di Filosofia teoretica era tenuta da Cosmo Guastella, mentre quella di Filosofia morale da Francesco Orestano. All’arrivo di Gentile, Guastella si era già distinto con la pubblicazione, presso l’editore Sandron di Palermo, dei due volumi di Saggi sulla teoria della conoscenza, con i quali aveva, rispettivamente nel 1898 e nel 1905, elaborato il suo fenomenismo recuperando la filosofia della tradizione anglosassone risalente, oltre che all’empirismo e al positivismo dei secoli XVIII e XIX, al neopositivismo promosso al Trinity College di Cambridge da Eduard Moore e da Bertrand Russell. Al termine della sua carriera accademica, Guastella avrebbe composto Le ragioni del fenomenismo, date alle stampe a Palermo nel 1921-22 per i tipi dell’editore e tipografo Priulla.

Evaluation of consciousness needs to be supported by the evidence of brain activation during external stimulation in patients with unresponsive wakefulness syndrome (UWS). Assessment of patients should include techniques that do not depend on overt motor responses and allow an objective investigation of the spontaneous patterns of brain activity. In particular, electroencephalography (EEG) coherence allows to easily measure functional relationships between pairs of neocortical regions and seems to be closely correlated with cognitive or behavioral measures. Here, we show the contribution of higher order associative cortices of patients with disorder of consciousness (N = 26) in response to simple sensory stimuli, such as visual, auditory and noxious stimulation. In all stimulus modalities an increase of short-range parietal and long-range fronto-parietal coherences in gamma frequencies were seen in the controls and minimally conscious patients. By contrast, UWS patients showed no significant modifications in the EEG patterns after stimulation. Our results suggest that UWS patients can not activate associative cortical networks, suggesting a lack of information integration. In fact, fronto-parietal circuits result to be connectively disrupted, conversely to patients that exhibit some form of consciousness. In the light of this, EEG coherence can be considered a powerful tool to quantify the involvement of cognitive processing giving information about the integrity of fronto-parietal network. This measure can represent a new neurophysiological marker of unconsciousness and help in determining an accurate diagnosis and rehabilitative intervention in each patient.

Se si vuole avere una visione d’insieme della vasta ed articolata produzione di Karl Marx, non si può trascurare la serie degli articoli scritti in varie riviste nel breve ma intenso segmento cronologico intercorso tra il 1842 ed il 1843. Il periodo di riferimento è quello che, dall’anno successivo al conseguimento della laurea in filosofia presso l’Università di Jena, conduce il giovanissimo Marx al trasferimento nella città di Parigi.

Il tema trattato nel presente articolo riguarda il confronto tra la pedagogia di comunità e le pedagogie della liberazione, due approcci che sono accomunati dal desiderio di promuovere il risveglio collettivo di una nuova coscienza sociale e politica. Le due prospettive pedagogiche riaffermano entrambe i diritti di tutti gli esseri umani, anche degli esclusi, a divenire soggetti politici in grado di trasformare la società in direzione autenticamente democratica. Grazie alla lezione di grandi maestri come John Dewey, Paulo Freire e Aldo Capitini, la prassi educativa vissuta nei contesti comunitari genera la corresponsabilità democratica di tutti; la cura del bene comune e il rispetto non violento degli altri aprono nuovi orizzonti planetari. The subject of this paper is about comparing pedagogy of community with pedagogies of the liberation; they are both two approaches that wish to encourage a collective awakening of social and political consciousness. The two pedagogic perspectives assert the rights of human beings (also the rights of the excluded persons) to become political individuals that learn to change the society in an authentic and a democratic way. According to educators as John Dewey, Paulo Freire and Aldo Capitini, the educational practices make possible to create, into the community places, a sense of democratic corresponsibility and a no-violent attitude between all human beings, and so offering new horizons for a planetary consciousness.

In a proof-of-principle prototypical demonstration we describe a new type of brain-machine interface (BMI) paradigm for upper limb motor training. The proposed technique allows a fast contingent and proportionally modulated stimulation of afferent proprioceptive and motor output neural pathways using operant learning. Continuous and immediate assisted-feedback of force proportional to rolandic rhythm oscillations during actual movements was employed and illustrated with a single case experiment. One hemiplegic patient was trained for two weeks coupling somatosensory brain oscillations with force field control during a robot mediated centre-out motor task whose execution approaches movements of everyday life. The robot facilitated actual movements adding a modulated force directed to the target, thus providing a non-delayed proprioceptive feedback. Neuro-electric, kinematic and motor-behavioural measures were recorded in pre- and post-assessments without force assistance. Patient’s healthy arm was used as control since neither a placebo control was possible nor other control conditions. We observed a generalized and significant kinematic improvement in the affected arm and a spatial accuracy improvement in both arms, together with an increase and focalization of the somatosensory rhythm changes used to provide assisted-force-feedback. The interpretation of the neurophysiological and kinematic evidences reported here is strictly related to the repetition of the motor-task and the presence of the assisted-force-feedback. Results are described as systematic observations only, without firm conclusions about the effectiveness of the methodology. In this prototypical view, the design of appropriate control conditions is discussed. This study presents a novel operant-learning-based BMI-application for motor training coupling brain oscillations and force feedback during an actual movement.

Vibro-tactile ERPs were recorded using whole hand stimulation in a classical odd-ball paradigm. Five different classification methods applied to single brain responses were compared off-line to perform a suboptimal selection of the algorithm for future on-line implementation of a brain-computer interface.

Introduction: High Fidelity Simulations (HFS) are increasingly used to develop Non-Technical Skills (NTS) in healthcare providers, medical and nursing students. Instruments to measure NTS are needed to evaluate the healthcare providers' (HCPs) performance during HFS. The aim of this systematic review is to describe the domains, items, characteristics and psychometric properties of instruments devised to evaluate the NTS of HCPs during HFS., Methods: A systematic review of the literature was performed according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Studies were retrieved from PubMed, Cinahl, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, ProQuest and PubPsych. Studies evaluating the measurement properties of instruments used to assess NTS during HFS training were included. Pairs of independent reviewers determined the eligibility, extracted and evaluated the data. Risk of bias and appraisal of the methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Consensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist, and the quality of the evidence with the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE)., Results: A total of 3,953 articles were screened. A total of 110 reports were assessed for eligibility and 26 studies were included. Studies were conducted in Europe/United Kingdom ( n = 13; 50%), North America/Australia ( n = 12; 46%) and Thailand ( n = 1; 4%). The NTS instruments reported in this review included from 1 to 14 domains (median of 4, Q 1 = 3.75, Q 3 = 5) and from 3 to 63 items (median of 15, Q 1 = 10, Q 3 = 19.75). Out of 19 NTS assessment instruments for HFS, the Team Emergency Assessment Measure (TEAM) can be recommended for use to assess NTS. All the other instruments require further research to assess their quality in order to be recommended for use during HFS training. Eight NTS instruments had a positive overall rating of their content validity with at least a moderate quality of evidence., Conclusion: Among a large variety of published instruments, TEAM can be recommended for use to assess NTS during HFS. Evidence is still limited on essential aspects of validity and reliability of all the other NTS instruments included in this review.
