In this work we seek to understand the pre-catalystic initiation steps between two metallaphotoredox catalysts Ir(III) ((Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2}(dtbbpy))PF6) and Ni(II) ((4,4'-dtbbpy)NiCl2) using a combination of X-ray and optical spectroscopies. We observe two steps: first, photoexcitation produces the expected intramolecular oxidation of Ir(III) to Ir(IV)(dtbbpy)•- correlated to the Ir metal-to-ligand charge transfer state, rather than Ir(II) which is often reported in literature. Second, the 4-coordinate Ni(II) starting species evolves to a 6-coordinate Ni(II) species after oxidation by Ir(IV)(dtbbpy)•-. We conclude by proposing the identity of the 6-coordinate Ni(II) species and its potential importance in the pre-mechanistic step prior to Ni entering the catalytic cycle. This neglected 6-coordinate Ni(II) intermediate could help to unravel the poorly understood initiation step in these metallaphotoredox C_sp3-C_sp2 cross-coupling reactions.

Understanding how Frenkel excitons efficiently split to form free-charges in low-dielectric constant organic semiconductors has proven challenging, with many different models proposed in recent years to explain this phenomenon. Here, we present evidence that a simple model invoking a modest amount of charge delocalization, a sum over the available microstates, and the Marcus rate constant for electron transfer can explain many seemingly contradictory phenomena reported in the literature. We use an electron-accepting fullerene host matrix dilutely sensitized with a series of electron donor molecules to test this hypothesis. The donor series enables us to tune the driving force for photoinduced electron transfer over a range of 0.7 eV, mapping out normal, optimal, and inverted regimes for free-charge generation efficiency, as measured by time-resolved microwave conductivity. However, the photoluminescence of the donor is rapidly quenched as the driving force increases, with no evidence for inverted behavior, nor the linear relationship between photoluminescence quenching and charge-generation efficiency one would expect in the absence of additional competing loss pathways. This behavior is self-consistently explained by competitive formation of bound charge-transfer states and long-range or delocalized free-charge states, where both rate constants are described by the Marcus rate equation. Moreover, the model predicts a suppression of the inverted regime for high-concentration blends and efficient ultrafast free-charge generation, providing a mechanistic explanation for why Marcus-inverted-behavior is rarely observed in device studies.

Colloidal organic nanoparticles have proven to be a promising class of photocatalyst for performing the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) due to their dispersibility in aqueous environments, their strong absorption within the visible region, and the tunabilty of their component materials’ redox potentials. Currently, there is little understanding of how charge generation and accumulation in organic semiconductors change when these materials are formed into nanoparticles that share a high interfacial area with water, nor is it known what mechanism limits the hydrogen evolution efficiency in recent reports on organic nanoparticle photocatalysts. Herein, we use Time-Resolved Microwave Conductivity to study aqueous-soluble organic nanoparticles and bulk thin films composed of various blend ratios of the non-fullerene acceptor EH-IDTBR and conjugated polymer PTB7-Th and examine the relationship between composition, interfacial surface area, charge carrier dynamics, and photocatalytic activity. We quantitatively measure the rate of Hydrogen Evolution Reaction by nanoparticles composed of various donor:acceptor blend ratio compositions and find that the most active blend ratio displays a Hydrogen Quantum Yield of 0.83 % per photon. Moreover, we find that nanoparticle photocatalytic activity corresponds directly to charge generation, and that nanoparticles have 3 times more long-lived accumulated charges relative to bulk samples of the same material composition. These results suggest that, under our current reaction conditions, with approximately 3$\times$ solar flux, catalytic activity by these nanoparticles is limited by the concentration of electrons and holes in operando and not a finite number of active surface cites or the catalytic rate at the interface. This provides a clear design goal for the next generation of efficient photocatalytic nanoparticles.

The development of non-natural photoenzymatic systems has reinvigorated the study of photoinduced electron transfer (ET) within protein active sites, providing new and unique platforms for understanding how biological environments affect photochemical processes. In this work, we use ultrafast spectroscopy to compare the photoinduced electron transfer in known photoenzymes. 12-Oxophytodienoate reductase 1 (OPR1) is compared to Old Yellow Enzyme 1 (OYE1) and morphinone reductase (MR). The latter enzymes are structurally homologous to OPR1. We find that slight differences in the amino acid composition of the active sites of these proteins determine their distinct electron-transfer dynamics. Our work suggests that the inside of a protein active site is a complex/heterogeneous dielectric network where genetically programmed heterogeneity near the site of biological ET can significantly affect the presence and lifetime of various intermediate states. Our work motivates additional tunability of Old Yellow Enzyme active-site reorganization energy and electron-transfer energetics that could be leveraged for photoenzymatic redox approaches.

Single-walled carbon nanohorns are an allotrope of carbon with promising properties for a variety of applications. Despite their promise, the majority carrier type (i.e. electrons or holes) that defines the electronic properties of this novel semiconductor is poorly understood and so far only indirect measurements have been employed to arrive at contradictory results. Here, we directly determine the majority carrier type in single-wall carbon nanohorns for the first time by means of thermopower measurements. Using this direct method, we show that SWCNH films exhibit a positive Seebeck coefficient indicating that SWCNHs behave as p-type semiconductors. This result is further corroborated by intentionally tuning the hole or electron concentrations of SWCNH layers via redox doping with molecular electron acceptors and donors, respectively. These results provide a framework for both measuring and chemically tuning the majority carrier type in this emerging nanocarbon semiconductor.

We report evidence of excited-state ion pair reorganisation in a cationic iridium (III) photoredox catalyst in 1,4-dioxane. Microwave-frequency dielectric-loss measurements combined with accurate calculations of dipolar relaxation time allow us to assign both ground and excited-state molecular dipole moments in solution and determine the polarizability volume in the excited-state. These measurements show significant changes in ground-state dipole moment between [Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2(dtbpy)]PF6 (10.74 Debye) and [Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2(dtbpy)]BArF4 (4.86 Debye). Photoexcitation of each complex results in population of highly mixed ligand centered and metal-to-ligand charge transfer states with enormous polarizability. Relaxation to the lowest lying excited-state leads to a negative change in the dipole moment for [Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2(dtbpy)]PF6, and a positive change in dipole moment for [Ir[dF(CF3)ppy]2(dtbpy)]BArF4. These observations are consistent with a sub-nanosecond reorganization with the PF6- counter-ion, which cancels the dipole moment of the lowest lying excited-state, a process which is absent for the BArF-4 counter-ion. Taken together, these observations suggest contact-ion pair formation between the cationic metal complex and the PF6- anion and, at most, solvent-separated pairing with BArF-4. The dynamic ion pair reorganisation we observe with the PF6- counter-ion may substantially modify both the thermodynamic potential available for electron transfer and kinetically inhibit oxidative catalysis, as the anion moves to cover the positively charged end of the molecule, providing a possible mechanistic explanation for recently observed trends in the catalytic activity of these complexes as a function of anion identity in low-polarity solvents. These tunable ion-pair dynamics could prove to be a valuable tool for tailoring the reactivity of both new and extant photocatalysts.

Singlet fission (SF), the generation of two triplet excitons per the absorption of one photon, is a promising strategy for increasing the efficiency of solar cells beyond the theoretical Shockley–Queisser limit of 34%. Upon photon absorption by a SF molecule, the initially created singlet excited state (S1) interacts with a neighboring chromophore and is first transformed into a triplet pair (TT), which can be subsequently separated into independent triplet excitons (2T1). These independent triplet excitons can be harvested through triplet charge extraction or triplet energy transfer to an acceptor. Metal halide perovskites feature crystalline-like electronic band structures and liquid-like physical properties. The crystal–liquid duality enables optoelectronic devices with unprecedented performance and a unique opportunity to chemically manipulate the structure with low energy input. In this work, we leverage the low formation energy of metal halide perovskites to demonstrate multicolor reversible chromism. We synthesized layered Ruddlesden-Popper FAn+1PbnX3n+1 (FA = formamidinium, X = I, Br; n = number of layers = 1, 2, 3 … ∞) and reversibly tune the dimensionality (n) by modulating the strength and number of H-bonds in the system. H-bonding was controlled by exposure to solvent vapor (solvatochromism) or temperature change (thermochromism), which shuttles FAX salt pairs between the FAn+1PbnX3n+1 domains and adjacent FAX “reservoir” domains. Unlike traditional chromic materials that only offer a single-color transition, FAn+1PbnX3n+1 films reversibly switch between multiple colors including yellow, orange, red, brown, and white/colorless. Each colored phase exhibits distinct optoelectronic properties characteristic of 2D superlattice materials with tunable quantum well thickness., Metal halide perovskites feature crystalline-like electronic band structures and liquid-like physical properties that allow chemical manipulation of the structure with low energy input. The conjugated polymer poly(benzothiophene dioxide) (PBTDO1) has recently been shown to exhibit efficient intramolecular singlet fission in solution. We investigate the role of intermolecular interactions in triplet separation dynamics after singlet fission. We use transient absorption spectroscopy to determine the singlet fission rate and triplet yield in two polymers differing only by side-chain motif in both solution and the solid state. Whereas solid-state films show singlet fission rates identical to those measured in solution, the average lifetime of the triplet population increases dramatically and is strongly dependent on side-chain identity. These results show that it may be necessary to carefully engineer the solid-state microstructure of these "singlet fission polymers" to produce the long-lived triplets needed to realize efficient photovoltaic devices.

Ultrafast photoinduced electron transfer (PIET) dynamics of a C70-encapsulated bisporphyrin covalent organic polyhedron hybrid (C70@COP-5) is studied in a nonpolar toluene medium with fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopies. This structurally rigid donor (D)–acceptor (A) molecular hybrid offers a new platform featuring conformationally predetermined cofacial D–A orientation with a fixed edge-to-edge separation, REE (2.8 A), without the aid of covalent bonds. Sub-picosecond PIET (τET ≤ 0.4 ps) and very slow charge recombination (τCR ≈ 600 ps) dynamics are observed. The origin of these dynamics is discussed in terms of enhanced D–A coupling (V = 675 cm–1) and extremely small reorganization energy (λ ≈ 0.18 eV), induced by the intrinsic structural rigidity of the C70@COP-5 complex.

Photoinduced generation of mobile charge carriers is the fundamental process underlying many applications, such as solar energy harvesting, solar fuel production, and efficient photodetectors. Monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) are an attractive model system for studying photoinduced carrier generation mechanisms in low-dimensional materials because they possess strong direct band gap absorption, large exciton binding energies, and are only a few atoms thick. While a number of studies have observed charge generation in neat TMDCs for photoexcitation at, above, or even below the optical band gap, the role of nonlinear processes (resulting from high photon fluences), defect states, excess charges, and layer interactions remains unclear. In this study, we introduce steady-state microwave conductivity (SSMC) spectroscopy for measuring charge generation action spectra in a model WS

A fused donor, thienobenzo[b]indacenodithiophene (TBIDT), was designed and synthesized using a novel acid-promoted cas-cade ring closure strategy, and copolymerized with a benzothiadiazole (BT) monomer. The backbone of TBIDT is an expan-sion of the well-known indacenodithiophene (IDT) unit and was expected to enhance the charge carrier mobility, by improving backbone planarity and facilitating short-contacts between polymer chains. However, the optimized field-effect transistors demonstrated an average saturation hole mobility of 0.9 cm2 V−1s−1, lower than the performance of IDT-BT (~1.5 cm2 V−1s−1). Mobilities extracted from time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) measurements were consistent with the trend in hole mobilities in OFET devices. Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) measurements and computational modelling illustrated that TBIDT-BT exhibits a less ordered microstructure in comparison to IDT-BT. This reveals that a regular side chain pack-ing density, independent of conformational isomers, is critical to avoid local free volume due to irregular packing, which can host trapping impurities. DFT calculations indicated that TBIDT-BT, despite containing a larger, planar unit, showed less stabilization of planar backbone geometries, in comparison to IDT-BT. This is due to the reduced electrostatic stabilizing inter-actions between the peripheral thiophene of the fused core with the BT unit, resulting in a reduction of the barrier to rotation around the single bond. These insights provide a greater understanding of the general structure-property relationships required for semiconducting polymer repeat units to ensure optimal backbone planarization, as illustrated with IDT-type units, guiding the design of novel semiconducting polymers with extended fused backbones for high-performance field-effect transistors.

We report quantum chemical calculations using multireference perturbation theory (MRPT) with the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) plus photothermal deflection spectroscopy measurements to investigate the manifold of carotenoid excited states and establish their energies relative to the bright state (S2) as a function of nuclear reorganization. We conclude that the primary photophysics and function of carotenoids are determined by interplay of only the bright (S2) and lowest-energy dark (S1) states. The lowest-lying dark state, far from being energetically distinguishable from the lowest-lying bright state along the entire excited-state nuclear reorganization pathway, is instead computed to be either the second or first excited state depending on what equilibrium geometry is considered. This result suggests that, rather than there being a dark intermediate excited state bridging a non-negligible energy gap from the lowest-lying dark state to the lowest-lying bright state, there is in fact no appreciable energy gap to bridge following photoexcitation. Instead, excited-state nuclear reorganization constitutes the bridge from S2 to S1, in the sense that these two states attain energetic degeneracy along this pathway.

Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) employing planar and mesoscopic architectures have both resulted in high efficiency devices. However, there is presently a limited understanding of the inherent advantages of both systems, particularly in terms of the charge transport and recombination dynamics. In the present study we characterize the relative benefits of the two most prominent CH3NH3PbI3 morphologies, primarily through time-resolved microwave conductivity (TRMC) and time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) measurements. The comparatively large perovskite grains, typical of planar assemblies, exhibited higher charge mobilities and slower trap-mediated recombination compared to the mesoscopic architectures. These findings reveal the injurious influence of grain boundaries on both charge transport and recombination kinetics, and suggest an innate advantage of planar morphologies. However, through impedance spectroscopy (IS) measurements, mesoscopic architectures were found to limit the interfacial recombination at the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) substrate. The lessons learnt through the characterization measurements were subsequently utilized to produce an optimized cell morphology, resulting in a maximum conversion efficiency of 16%.

We report a design strategy that allows the preparation of solution processable n type materials from low boiling point solvents for organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The polymer backbone is based on NDI-T2 copolymers where a branched alkyl side chain is gradually exchanged for a linear ethylene glycol based side chain. A series of random copolymers are prepared with glycol side chain percentages of 0, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90 and 100 with respect to the alkyl side chains. These are characterized in order to study the influence of the polar side chains on interaction with aqueous electrolytes, their electrochemical redox reactions and performance in OECTs when operated in aqueous electrolytes. We observe that glycol side chain percentages of >50 % are required to achieve volumetric charging while lower glycol chain percentages show a mixed operation with high required voltages to allow for bulk charging of the organic semiconductor. A strong dependence of the electron mobility on the fraction of glycol chains was found for copolymers based on NDI-T2, with a significant drop as alkyl side chains are replaced by glycol side chains.

Many typical organic optoelectronic devices, such as light-emitting diodes, field-effect transistors, and photovoltaic cells, use an ultrathin active layer where the organic semiconductor is confined within nanoscale dimensions. However, the question of how this spatial constraint impacts the active material is rarely addressed, although it may have a drastic influence on the phase behavior and microstructure of the active layer and hence the final performance. Here, the small-molecule semiconductor p-DTS(FBTTh2)2 is used as a model system to illustrate how sensitive this class of material can be to spatial confinement on device-relevant length scales. It is also shown that this effect can be exploited; it is demonstrated, for instance, that spatial confinement is an efficient tool to direct the crystal orientation and overall texture of p-DTS(FBTTh2)2 structures in a controlled manner, allowing for the manipulation of properties including photoluminescence and charge transport characteristics. This insight should be widely applicable as the temperature/confinement phase diagrams established via differential scanning calorimetry and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction are used to identify specific processing routes that can be directly extrapolated to other functional organic materials, such as polymeric semiconductors, ferroelectrics or high-refractive-index polymers, to induce desired crystal textures or specific (potentially new) polymorphs.

A combination of molecular quantum electrodynamics, perturbation theory, and ab initio calculations was used to create a computational methodology capable of estimating the rate of three-body singlet upconversion in organic molecular assemblies. The approach was applied to quantify the conditions under which such relaxation rates, known as energy pooling, become meaningful for two test systems, stilbene-fluorescein and hexabenzocoronene-oligothiophene. Both exhibit low intramolecular conversion, but intermolecular configurations exist in which pooling efficiency is at least 90% when placed in competition with more conventional relaxation pathways. For stilbene-fluorescein, the results are consistent with data generated in an earlier experimental investigation. Exercising these model systems facilitated the development of a set of design rules for the optimization of energy pooling.

A fluorinated faux hawk fullerene with comparable OPV-relevant TRMC performance and far greater thermal stability than PCBM is reported., Reaction of C60, C6F5CF2I, and SnH(n-Bu)3 produced, among other unidentified fullerene derivatives, the two new compounds 1,9-C60(CF2C6F5)H (1) and 1,9-C60(cyclo-CF2(2-C6F4)) (2). The highest isolated yield of 1 was 35% based on C60. Depending on the reaction conditions, the relative amounts of 1 and 2 generated in situ were as high as 85% and 71%, respectively, based on HPLC peak integration and summing over all fullerene species present other than unreacted C60. Compound 1 is thermally stable in 1,2-dichlorobenzene (oDCB) at 160 °C but was rapidly converted to 2 upon addition of Sn2(n-Bu)6 at this temperature. In contrast, complete conversion of 1 to 2 occurred within minutes, or hours, at 25 °C in 90/10 (v/v) PhCN/C6D6 by addition of stoichiometric, or sub-stoichiometric, amounts of proton sponge (PS) or cobaltocene (CoCp2). DFT calculations indicate that when 1 is deprotonated, the anion C60(CF2C6F5)– can undergo facile intramolecular SNAr annulation to form 2 with concomitant loss of F–. To our knowledge this is the first observation of a fullerene-cage carbanion acting as an SNAr nucleophile towards an aromatic C–F bond. The gas-phase electron affinity (EA) of 2 was determined to be 2.805(10) eV by low-temperature PES, higher by 0.12(1) eV than the EA of C60 and higher by 0.18(1) eV than the EA of phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). In contrast, the relative E 1/2(0/–) values of 2 and C60, –0.01(1) and 0.00(1) V, respectively, are virtually the same (on this scale, and under the same conditions, the E 1/2(0/–) of PCBM is –0.09 V). Time-resolved microwave conductivity charge-carrier yield × mobility values for organic photovoltaic active-layer-type blends of 2 and poly-3-hexylthiophene (P3HT) were comparable to those for equimolar blends of PCBM and P3HT. The structure of solvent-free crystals of 2 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The number of nearest-neighbor fullerene–fullerene interactions with centroid···centroid (⊙···⊙) distances of ≤10.34 Å is significantly greater, and the average ⊙···⊙ distance is shorter, for 2 (10 nearest neighbors; ave. ⊙···⊙ distance = 10.09 Å) than for solvent-free crystals of PCBM (7 nearest neighbors; ave. ⊙···⊙ distance = 10.17 Å). Finally, the thermal stability of 2 was found to be far greater than that of PCBM.

Photon upconversion is a fundamental interaction of light and matter that has applications in fields ranging from bioimaging to microfabrication. However, all photon upconversion methods demonstrated thus far involve challenging aspects, including requirements of high excitation intensities, degradation in ambient air, requirements of exotic materials or phases, or involvement of inherent energy loss processes. Here we experimentally demonstrate a mechanism of photon upconversion in a thin film, binary mixture of organic chromophores that provides a pathway to overcoming the aforementioned disadvantages. This singlet-based process, called Cooperative Energy Pooling (CEP), utilizes a sensitizer-acceptor design in which multiple photoexcited sensitizers resonantly and simultaneously transfer their energies to a higher-energy state on a single acceptor. Data from this proof-of-concept implementation is fit by a proposed model of the CEP process. Design guidelines are presented to facilitate further research and development of more optimized CEP systems., Photon upconversion methods demonstrated thus far involve challenging requirements. Here Weingarten et al. demonstrate a mechanism called cooperative energy pooling, in which multiple photoexcited sensitizers resonantly and simultaneously transfer their energies to a higher-energy state on a single acceptor.

Organic-inorganic perovskites with intriguing optical and electrical properties have attracted significant research interests due to their excellent performance in optoelectronic devices. Recent efforts on preparing uniform and large-grain polycrystalline perovskite films have led to enhanced carrier lifetime up to several microseconds. However, the mobility and trap densities of polycrystalline perovskite films are still significantly behind their single-crystal counterparts. Here, a facile topotactic-oriented attachment (TOA) process to grow highly oriented perovskite films, featuring strong uniaxial-crystallographic texture, micrometer-grain morphology, high crystallinity, low trap density (≈4 × 1014 cm-3 ), and unprecedented 9 GHz charge-carrier mobility (71 cm2 V-1 s-1 ), is demonstrated. TOA-perovskite-based n-i-p planar solar cells show minimal discrepancies between stabilized efficiency (19.0%) and reverse-scan efficiency (19.7%). The TOA process is also applicable for growing other state-of-the-art perovskite alloys, including triple-cation and mixed-halide perovskites.

Strong quantum confinement and low dielectric screening impart single-walled carbon nanotubes with exciton-binding energies substantially exceeding kBT at room temperature. Despite these large binding energies, reported photoluminescence quantum yields are typically low and some studies suggest that photoexcitation of carbon nanotube excitonic transitions can produce free charge carriers. Here we report the direct measurement of long-lived free-carrier generation in chirality-pure, single-walled carbon nanotubes in a low dielectric solvent. Time-resolved microwave conductivity enables contactless and quantitative measurement of the real and imaginary photoconductance of individually suspended nanotubes. The conditions of the microwave conductivity measurement allow us to avoid the complications of most previous measurements of nanotube free-carrier generation, including tube–tube/tube–electrode contact, dielectric screening by nearby excitons and many-body interactions. Even at low photon fluence (approximately 0.05 excitons per μm length of tubes), we directly observe free carriers on excitation of the first and second carbon nanotube exciton transitions., Photoinduced carrier-generation in individual semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes is controversial. Here, the authors demonstrate that free carriers can be generated even in the absence of dissociating interfaces by performing time-resolved microwave conductivity on solutions of dispersed nanotubes.

The diffusion of singlet and triplet excitons along single polyfluorene chains in solution has been studied by monitoring their transport to end traps. Time-resolved transient absorption and steady state fluorescence were used to determine fractions of excitons that reach the end caps. In order to accurately determine the singlet diffusion coefficient, the fraction of polymer ends that have end traps was determined through a combination of NMR and triplet quenching experiments. The distributions of polymer lengths were also taken into account and the resulting analysis points to a surprisingly long singlet diffusion length of 34 nm. Experiments on triplet transport also suggest that the entire 100nm+ chain is accessible to the triplet during its lifetime suggesting a lack of hindrance by defects or traps on this timescale. Time Resolved Microwave Conductivity measurements were also performed on a series of different length oligo- and polyfluorenes in solution allowing a global fit to be performed to extract an accurate intrachain mobility of 1.1 cm2/Vs.

We use flash-photolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity experiments (FP-TRMC) and femtosecond-nanosecond pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy to investigate photoinduced carrier generation and recombination dynamics of a trilayer cascade heterojunction composed of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), titanyl phthalocyanine (TiOPc), and fullerene (C60). Carrier generation following selective photoexcitation of TiOPc is independently observed at both the P3HT/TiOPc and TiOPc/C60 interfaces. The transient absorption results indicate that following initial charge generation processes to produce P3HT(•+)/TiOPc(•-) and TiOPc(•+)/C60(•-) at each interface from (P3HT/TiOPc*/C60), the final charge-separated product of (P3HT(•+)/TiOPc/C60(•-)) is responsible for the long-lived photoconductance signals in FP-TRMC. At the P3HT/TiOPc interface in both P3HT/TiOPc and P3HT/TiOPc/C60 samples, the electron transfer appears to occur only with the crystalline (weakly coupled H-aggregate) phase of the P3HT.

The innate binding specificity of different carbohydrate-binding modules (CBMs) offers a versatile approach for mapping the chemistry and structure of surfaces that contain complex carbohydrates. We have employed the distinct recognition properties of a double His-tagged recombinant CBM tagged with semiconductor quantum dots for direct imaging of crystalline cellulose at the molecular level of resolution, using transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy. In addition, three different types of CBMs from families 3, 6, and 20 that exhibit different carbohydrate specificities were each fused with either green fluorescent protein (GFP) or red fluorescent protein (RFP) and employed for double-labeling fluorescence microscopy studies of primary cell walls and various mixtures of complex carbohydrate target molecules. CBM probes can be used for characterizing both native complex carbohydrates and engineered biomaterials.

In this communication we discuss the possibility of hole transfer between a photoexcited semiconductor quantum dot and a pi-conjugated polymer. This charge-transfer event will be investigated (exploited) on the basis of its implication toward a solar energy conversion scheme. Experimentally, we show that the steady-state photoluminescence (PL) of a solution of InP quantum dots is quenched by the introduction of solvated poly(3-hexylthiophene). Time-resolved PL experiments on these solutions are also presented. It was observed that the PL transients did not significantly change upon the addition of the conductive polymer. These new results indicate that said PL quenching is static in nature. This suggests that in solution, the quantum dot and the polymer exhibit a strong intermolecular interaction. As the two species encounter each other through diffusion, the polymer quenches the quantum dot photoluminescence without altering the population's PL lifetime. This new evidence suggests that the polymer and the quantum dot form a relatively stable complex.

This presentation will report on the photophysics of a covalent organic polyhedron molecule (COP-5) that contains two porphyrin molecules in the cage structure and with an encapsulated C70 molecule bound in its core. The photo-induced electron transfer processes in this structure create anomalously long-lived charge-transfer states that also respond in an unconventional fashion to the dielectric constant of the solvent. Preliminary results on using this complex to sensitize the production of long-lived charge carriers in a conjugated polymer will also be reported, where the carrier yields and kinetics are tracked using time-resolved microwave conductivity. The purpose of this work is to gain a better understanding of the nature of charge transfer (CT) and charge-separated (CS) states in the production of carriers in conjugated polymers blended with fullerenes.

Organic-inorganic perovskites, such as CH3NH3PbX3 (X = I, Br, Cl), have emerged as attractive absorber materials for the fabrication of low cost high efficiency solar cells. Over the last 3 years, there has been an exceptional rise in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs), demonstrating the outstanding potential of these perovskite materials. However, in most device architectures, including the simplest thin-film planar structure, a current-voltage response displays an "anomalous hysteresis", whereby the power output of the cell varies with measurement time, direction and light exposure or bias history. Here we provide insight into the physical processes occurring at the interface between the n-type charge collection layer and the perovskite absorber. Through spectroscopic measurements, we find that electron transfer from the perovskite to the TiO2 in the standard planar junction cells is very slow. By modifying the n-type contact with a self-assembled fullerene monolayer, electron transfer is "switched on", and both the n-type and p-type heterojunctions with the perovskite are active in driving the photovoltaic operation. The fullerene-modified devices achieve up to 17.3% power conversion efficiency with significantly reduced hysteresis, and stabilized power output reaching 15.7% in the planar p-i-n heterojunction solar cells measured under simulated AM 1.5 sunlight.

The reactions of primary and secondary amines with 7,7,8,8-tetracyano-p-quinodimethane (TCNQ) lead to mono- and di-substituted adducts. Fluorescence emission has been observed for several of these compounds. The luminescence property of the TCNQ adducts, 2-{4-[(2,6-dimethylmorpholin-4-yl)(4-methylpiperidin-1-yl)methylene]cyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-ylidene}malononitrile (MORPIP) and 2-{4-[cyclohex-1-yltetrahydropyrimidin-2(1H)-ylidene]cyclohexa-2,5-dien-1-ylidene}malononitrile (AMINO) were investigated in a variety of environments. These included alcohol solutions and crystals at room temperature and glass forming solvents and polymer films as a function of temperature. The fluorescence quantum yields and Stokes' shifts were found to be very sensitive to the matrix. Crystal structure data show that the molecules are non-planar in the ground state. The matrix effect is discussed in terms of the conformational change during photo-excitation and the constraint imposed on this by the matrix.

We report photoluminescence (PL), linear absorption and femtosecond, transient bleaching spectra for a colloidal solution of indium phosphide (InP) quantum dots (QDs) at ambient temperature. The PL quantum yield is shown to depend significantly upon the excitation wavelength and the PL excitation spectrum deviates markedly from the absorption spectrum. The cooling of electrons and holes to the lowest energy excited state is determined, by transient bleaching spectroscopy, to occur with an efficiency that is independent of the excitation wavelength. These results are discussed in terms of a threshold for a non-radiative decay process that resides above the bandgap and a PL quantum yield that depends upon the size of QD.

Integrated three-pulse stimulated echo peak shift data are compared for N,N-bis-dimethylphenyl-2,4,6,8perylenetetracarbonyl diamide and poly@2-(28-ethylhexyloxy)-5-methoxy-1,4-phenylenevinylene# ~MEHPPV! in toluene solvent. These two molecules represent a model probe of solvation dynamics and a prototypical soluble, electroluminescent conjugated polymer, respectively. The results indicate that it is inappropriate to describe the linear absorption spectrum of MEH-PPV as being primarily inhomogeneously broadened. Conformational disorder along the polymer backbone gives rise to an ensemble of polyene electronic oscillators that are strongly coupled to each other. As a consequence, fluctuations in the electronic energy gap on a time-scale of 50-fs derive primarily from bath-mediated exciton scattering. The data reported here provide an explanation for the broad, structureless electronic absorption of MEH-PPV. This interpretation provides a valuable insight into the nature of the initial photoexcited state, and the efficient population of the emissive state.

We report on the efficient photooxidation of hexapropyl bis(dimethylamino) zinc porphyrazine. The process is shown to be autocatalytic. The triplet state of the seco-ZnPz sensitizes the formation of excited-state singlet oxygen with a quantum yield of 0.54 and subsequent cleavage of the pyrrole double bond occurs to give the product, seco-zinc porphyrazine. The photophysics of the two porphyrazines is examined using absorption, emission, and transient absorption spectroscopy. The efficiency of production of singlet oxygen is monitored using the phosphorescence emission signature at 1270 nm.

Laser cooling in fluid solutions of the laser dye rhodamine 101 in acidified ethanol has been observed when the molecule is excited into the low-energy tail of the absorption spectrum, at energies in the region 585−1593 cm-1 lower in energy than the 0−0 band origin at 590 nm. The most efficient cooling is achieved when the laser is tuned to 615 nm when a net cooling power of 0.37 mW per 100 mW of pumping power is observed. In this paper, details leading up to this unique observation are documented: in particular, the quantum efficiencies in highly concentrated solutions and the characterization of anti-Stokes fluorescence as a nonintrusive temperature sensor.

Hydrophobic self-assembly has been used to direct the synthesis of conjugated [2] and [3]rotaxanes (20 and 21) in aqueous solution, by Glaser coupling a water-soluble alkyne 3 in the presence of a cyclophane 6. No rotaxanes were formed when cyclodextrins were used instead of the cyclophane. NMR and electrospray mass spectrometry were used to probe the binding properties of the stopper unit 3. NMR ring current shifts and NOEs show that the cyclophane 6 binds mainly to the terminal phenylene unit of 3. In solution cyclodextrins bind less strongly than the cyclophane, whereas in the gas-phase cyclodextrins bind more strongly. The water-soluble rotaxanes are fully characterised by electrospray mass spectrometry, NMR and UV-VIS emission/absorption. Both rotaxanes tend to fragment, by unthreading and by dumbbell-cleavage, during electrospray ionisation, particularly at high cone voltages. The insulation of the conjugated dumbbell inside the [3]rotaxane results in increased fluorescence efficiency. Time-resolved fluorescence measurements show that these rotaxanes decompose during photolysis to give products with longer fluorescence lifetimes; the rate of this photodecomposition is slower for the [3]rotaxane than for the naked dumbbell. The extension of this synthetic approach to larger polyrotaxanes was explored by coupling alkyne 3 and diethynylbenzene 2 in the presence of cyclophane 6; this gives some longer [2] and [3]rotaxanes but higher polyrotaxanes are not formed.

Photoinduced charge generation (PCG) dynamics are notoriously difficult to correlate with specific molecular properties in device relevant polymer:fullerene organic photovoltaic blend films due to the highly complex nature of the solid state blend morphology. Here, this study uses six judiciously selected trifluoromethylfullerenes blended with the prototypical polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) and measure the PCG dynamics in 50 fs–500 ns time scales with time-resolved microwave conductivity and femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The isomeric purity and thorough chemical characterization of the fullerenes used in this study allow for a detailed correlation between molecular properties, driving force, local intermolecular electronic coupling and, ultimately, the efficiency of PCG yield. The findings show that the molecular design of the fullerene not only determines inter-fullerene electronic coupling, but also influences the decay dynamics of free holes in the donor phase even when the polymer microstructure remains unchanged.

We demonstrate photoinduced spontaneous free-carrier generation in highly individualized (7,5)- chirality-enriched SWCNT samples ((7,5)-SWCNTs) suspended in a non-polar organic solvent. Frequency-resolved solution-phase flash photolysis time-resolved microwave conductivity (fp- TRMC), provides a contactless and quantitative measurement of the real and imaginary photoconductance of these individually suspended nanotubes. We use substantially lower excitation fluences than have been possible in previous studies, corresponding to absorbed photon densities of ~0.05 photons per micron length of (7,5)-SWCNTs, allowing us to avoid complications from dielectric screening by nearby excitons or exciton-exciton collisions. Even under these mild conditions, we unambiguously measure a photoconductance due to free carriers that are generated following excitation of both the first and second exciton transitions (S11 and S22, respectively). The low-fluence carrier generation quantum yield (Φ) with S22 excitation appears c.a. 2.4 times higher than that with S11 excitation, suggesting that the autoionization of S22 excitons clearly enhances the carrier generation efficiency. In contrast, the transient decay dynamics are independent of excitation wavelength, suggesting that the mobile carriers generated from either S11 or S22 excitation undergo identical decay pathways (i.e. trapping, recombination, etc.).

The use of a Marcus formulation to describe photo-induced electron transfer processes in the complex blends of conjugated polymers and fullerenes associated with organic photovoltaics is rare. The conventional approach considers the polymer and fullerene to form a type II band offset similar to a picture for two inorganic semiconductors. A motivation for this presentation is to ask whether this simple model is correct and only the energetics need be considered when examining the driving force for the photo-induced electron transfer process. Or whether a re-organization energy is also required to describe the effect and therefore an optimum driving force is required to realize high charge separation yields. This presentation will describe two studies using a series of trifluoromethylfullerenes (TMFs) dispersed at low concentration in a conjugated polymer film or in a bilayer forming an interface with a layer of chiral-pure single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The fullerene series provides exquisite control over a wide range of reduction potentials of the fullerene, and can thus influence the driving force for photo-induced electron transfer studies. In both experiments, the use of the electrodeless technique of flash photolysis, time-resolved microwave conductivity (fp-TRMC) which provides a sensitive probe of the yield and kinetics of charges generated in both systems.
