Abstract

We introduce surfaces at infinity, a class of rational surfaces linked to curves with only one place at infinity. The cone of curves of these surfaces is finite polyhedral and minimally generated. We also introduce the $\delta$-semigroup of a surface at infinity and consider the set $\mathcal{S}$ of surfaces at infinity having the same $\delta$-semigroup. Pediatric ACTs typically occur in the context of a germline TP53 mutation, can be cured when diagnosed at an early stage, but are difficult to treat when advanced or associated with concurrent TP53 and ATRX alterations. Recent work has demonstrated DNA methylation patterns suggestive of prognostic significance. While current treatment standards rely heavily upon surgical resection, chemotherapy, and hormonal modulation, small cohort studies suggest promise for multi-tyrosine kinases targeting anti-angiogenic pathways or immunomodulatory therapies. Future work will focus on novel risk stratification algorithms and combination therapies intended to mitigate toxicity for patients with perceived low-risk disease while intensifying therapy or accelerating discoveries aimed at improving survival for patients with difficult-to-treat disease.Keywords: adrenocortical, pediatric, management, discovery, carcinoma, tumors

5. On the computation of Darboux first integrals of a class of planar polynomial vector fields

Abstract

We study the class of planar polynomial vector fields admitting Darboux first integrals of the type $\prod_{i=1}^r f_i^{\alpha_i}$, where the $\alpha_i$'s are positive real numbers and the $f_i$'s are polynomials defining curves with only one place at infinity. We show that these vector fields have an extended reduction procedure and give an algorithm which, from a part of the extended reduction of the vector field, computes a Darboux first integral for generic exponents.

6. Worsening School Segregation for Latino Children?

Abstract

A half century of research details how segregating racial groups in separate schools corresponds with disparities in funding and quality teachers and culturally narrow curricula. But we know little about whether young Latino children have entered less or more segregated elementary schools over the past generation. This article details the growing share of Latino children from low-income families populating schools, 1998 to 2010. Latinos became more segregated within districts enrolling at least 10% Latino pupils nationwide, including large urban districts. Exposure of poor students (of any race) to middle-class peers improved nationwide. This appears to stem in part from rising educational attainment of adults in economically integrated communities populated by Latinos. Children of native-born Latina mothers benefit more from economic integration than those of immigrant mothers, who remain isolated in separate schools. We discuss implications for local educators and policy makers and suggest future research to illuminate where and how certain districts have advanced integration.

This paper introduces Hopf braces, a new algebraic structure related to the Yang-Baxter equation which include Rump's braces and their non-commutative generalizations as particular cases. Several results of classical braces are still valid in our context. Abstract

We give an algorithm for deciding whether a planar polynomial differential system has a first integral which factorizes as a product of defining polynomials of curves with only one place at infinity. In the affirmative case, our algorithm computes a minimal first integral. In addition, we solve the Poincar\'e problem for the class of systems which admit a polynomial first integral as above in the sense that the degree of the minimal first integral can be computed from the reduction of singularities of the corresponding vector field.

Abstract

This report describes the results of an observational study dedicated to rhabdomyosarcoma developed by the Asociación de Hemato-oncología Pediatrica de Centro América (AHOPCA) between 2001 and 2018. Overall, 337 previously untreated patients < 18 years old were included in the analysis; 58% had unresected disease, and 19% were metastatic at diagnosis. With a median follow-up of 6.6 years, five-year event-free and overall survival rates were 30% and 33%, respectively. Local progression/relapse was the main cause of treatment failure.

Abstract

In gold nanoparticle-enhanced radiotherapy, intravenously administered nanoparticles tend to accumulate in the tumor tissue by means of the so-called permeability and retention effect and upon irradiation with x-rays, the nanoparticles release a secondary electron field that increases the absorbed dose that would otherwise be obtained from the interaction of the x-rays with tissue alone. The concentration of the nanoparticles in the tumor, number of nanoparticles per unit of mass, which determines the total absorbed dose imparted, can be measured via magnetic resonance or computed tomography images, usually with a resolution of several millimeters. Using a tumor vasculature model with a resolution of 500 nm, we show that for a given concentration of nanoparticles, the dose enhancement that occurs upon irradiation with x-rays greatly depends on whether the nanoparticles are confined to the tumor vasculature or have already extravasated into the surrounding tumor tissue. We show that, compared to the reference irradiation with no nanoparticles present in the tumor model, irradiation with the nanoparticles confined to the tumor vasculature, either in the bloodstream or attached to the inner blood vessel walls, results in a two to three-fold increase in the absorbed dose to the whole tumor model, with respect to an irradiation when the nanoparticles have already extravasated into the tumor tissue. Therefore, it is not enough to measure the concentration of the nanoparticles in a tumor, but the location of the nanoparticles within each volume element of a tumor, be it inside the vasculature or the tumor tissue, needs to be determined as well if an accurate estimation of the resultant absorbed dose distribution, a key element in the success of a radiotherapy treatment, is to be made. 14. Generating sequences and Poincar\'e series for a finite set of plane divisorial valuations

Abstract

Let $V$ be a finite set of divisorial valuations centered at a 2-dimensional regular local ring $R$. In this paper we study its structure by means of the semigroup of values, $S_V$, and the multi-index graded algebra defined by $V$, $\gr_V R$. We prove that $S_V$ is finitely generated and we compute its minimal set of generators following the study of reduced curve singularities. Moreover, we prove a unique decomposition theorem for the elements of the semigroup. The comparison between valuations in $V$, the approximation of a reduced plane curve singularity $C$ by families of sets $V^{(k)}$ of divisorial valuations, and the relationship between the value semigroup of $C$ and the semigroups of the sets $V^{(k)}$, allow us to obtain the (finite) minimal generating sequences for $C$ as well as for $V$. We also analyze the structure of the homogeneous components of $\gr_V R$. The study of their dimensions allows us to relate the Poincar\'e series for $V$ and for a general curve $C$ of $V$. Since the last series coincides with the Alexander polynomial of the singularity, we can deduce a formula of A'Campo type for the Poincar\'e series of $V$. Moreover, the Poincar\'e series of $C$ could be seen as the limit of the series of $V^{(k)}$, $k\ge 0$.

15. $\delta$-sequences and Evaluation Codes defined by Plane Valuations at Infinity

Abstract

We introduce the concept of $\delta$-sequence. A $\delta$-sequence $\Delta$ generates a well-ordered semigroup $S$ in $\mathbb{Z}^2$ or $\mathbb{R}$. We show how to construct (and compute parameters) for the dual code of any evaluation code associated with a weight function defined by $\Delta$ from the polynomial ring in two indeterminates to a semigroup $S$ as above. We prove that this is a simple procedure which can be understood by considering a particular class of valuations of function fields of surfaces, called plane valuations at infinity. We also give algorithms to construct an unlimited number of $\delta$-sequences of the different existing types, and so this paper provides the tools to know and use a new large set of codes.

Abstract

We give an algorithm to decide whether an algebraic plane foliation F has a rational first integral and to compute it in the affirmative case. The algorithm runs whenever we assume the polyhedrality of the cone of curves of the surface obtained after blowing-up the set B_F of infinitely near points needed to get the dicritical exceptional divisors of a minimal resolution of the singularities of F. This condition can be detected in several ways, one of them from the proximity relations in B_F and, as a particular case, it holds when the cardinality of B_F is less than 9.

Abstract

Resumen El objetivo del presente trabajo es crear un consenso acerca del método de exfoliación en fase líquida (LPE) para la producción de grafeno y, a su vez, conocer las causas y los diversos factores que afectan el rendimiento y la calidad del grafeno obtenido. Para lograr este objetivo, se realiza una revisión bibliográfica sistemática usando el buscador de Google Académico por la extensión de su acervo. En el presente escrito los resultados obtenidos de esta revisión bibliográfica exhaustiva de la LPE de grafeno se ordenan de acuerdo con su relevancia, dando prioridad en conocer las causas y los fenómenos físicos claves relacionados con la LPE. Los artículos centrados en entender los fenómenos físicos y químicos que gobiernan la LPE fueron clasificados en la sección mecanismo, con el fin de tener una mejor comprensión del fenómeno a nivel molecular. Con esta información, se propone una clasificación de acuerdo con las técnicas más comúnmente usadas (sonicación, microfluídica, etc) para lograr un consenso sobre las técnicas que se clasifican dentro del método de LPE de grafeno con base en el mecanismo, lo que da pauta al desarrollo de nuevas técnicas que mejoren significativamente el desempeño de este método. De la revisión sistemática se concluye que el método de exfoliación en fase líquida es un método robusto, atractivo para la industria, de fácil escalabilidad y de alto rendimiento en general dependiendo de las técnicas de preparación. Abstract The objective of this article is to create a consensus about the graphene production by the liquid-phase exfoliation (LPE) method, as well as to understand the key causes and factors affecting the yield and quality of the graphene obtained. An exhaustive bibliographic search was conducted in Google Scholar given the extent of its collection. The results of the search are ordered by relevance, giving priority to key causes and physical phenomena related to LPE. The articles focused on understanding physical and chemical phenomena were classified in the mechanism section, in order to have a better understanding of the method at the molecular level. With this information, a classification of the most common LPE techniques (sonication, microfluidics, etc.) is proposed in order to reach a consensus on which techniques belong to the LPE method in function of their mechanism. The proposed classification aims at developing new techniques to significantly improve the performance of this method. From this systematic review, it is concluded that the liquid-phase exfoliation method is robust and very attractive to the industry and has easy scalability with high performance in relation to the techniques analyzed. Para alcançar este objetivo, realiza-se uma revisão bibliográfica sistemática usando o buscador do Google Acadêmico na extensão de seu acervo. No presente escrito, os resultados obtidos desta revisão bibliográfica exaustiva da LPE de grafeno são ordenados segundo sua relevância, dando prioridade em conhecer as causas e os fenômenos físicos fundamentais relacionados com a LPE. Os artigos centralizados em entender os fenômenos físicos e químicos que governam a LPE foram classificados na seção mecanismo, objetivando ter uma melhor compreensão do fenômeno no âmbito molecular. Com essa informação, propõe-se uma classificação de acordo com as técnicas usadas com mais frequência (sonicação, microfluídica, etc.) para obter um consenso sobre as técnicas que são classificadas dentro do método de LPE de grafeno com base no mecanismo, o que dá pauta para o desenvolvimento de novas técnicas que melhorem significativamente o desempenho deste método. Da revisão sistemática, conclui-se que o método de esfoliação em fase líquida é um método robusto e atraente para a indústria, de fácil escalabilidade e de alto desempenho em geral, dependendo das técnicas de preparação.

Abstract

Background: Previous studies have shown that children and adolescents with COVID-19 generally have mild disease. Children and adolescents with cancer, however, can have severe disease when infected with respiratory viruses. In this study, we aimed to understand the clinical course and outcomes of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children and adolescents with cancer. Methods: We did a cohort study with data from 131 institutions in 45 countries. We created the Global Registry of COVID-19 in Childhood Cancer to capture de-identified data pertaining to laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infections in children and adolescents (<19 years) with cancer or having received a haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation. There were no centre-specific exclusion criteria. The registry was disseminated through professional networks through email and conferences and health-care providers were invited to submit all qualifying cases. Data for demographics, oncological diagnosis, clinical course, and cancer therapy details were collected. Primary outcomes were disease severity and modification to cancer-directed therapy. The registry remains open to data collection. Findings: Of 1520 submitted episodes, 1500 patients were included in the study between April 15, 2020, and Feb 1, 2021. 1319 patients had complete 30-day follow-up. 259 (19·9%) of 1301 patients had a severe or critical infection, and 50 (3·8%) of 1319 died with the cause attributed to COVID-19 infection. Modifications to cancer-directed therapy occurred in 609 (55·8%) of 1092 patients receiving active oncological treatment. Multivariable analysis revealed several factors associated with severe or critical illness, including World Bank low-income or lower-middle-income (odds ratio [OR] 5·8 [95% CI 3·8–8·8]; p<0·0001) and upper-middle-income (1·6 [1·2–2·2]; p=0·0024) country status; age 15–18 years (1·6 [1·1–2·2]; p=0·013); absolute lymphocyte count of 300 or less cells per mm3 (2·5 [1·8–3·4]; p<0·0001), absolute neutrophil count

Abstract

Entre muchos objetivos de la automatización, se cuenta la búsqueda de correctos desempeños en los procesos industriales. El sector industrial no es la excepción, allí es importante implementar sensores de alta calidad y calibración para disminuir los tiempos de las paradas falsas de la maquinaria. En este artículo se describe el modelamiento e implementación de un controlador PID para la automatización de la estación de estampado en una máquina ensambladora de bolígrafos, por medio de un PLC SIEMENS® referencia CPU226 y una HMI (interfaz humano máquina) SIEMENS® TP177; se adiciona el control de la temperatura utilizando un módulo de termocuplas en el PLC.

Abstract

Background: In estimating the global burden of cancer, adolescents and young adults with cancer are often overlooked, despite being a distinct subgroup with unique epidemiology, clinical care needs, and societal impact. Comprehensive estimates of the global cancer burden in adolescents and young adults (aged 15–39 years) are lacking. To address this gap, we analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, with a focus on the outcome of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), to inform global cancer control measures in adolescents and young adults. Methods: Using the GBD 2019 methodology, international mortality data were collected from vital registration systems, verbal autopsies, and population-based cancer registry inputs modelled with mortality-to-incidence ratios (MIRs). Incidence was computed with mortality estimates and corresponding MIRs. Prevalence estimates were calculated using modelled survival and multiplied by disability weights to obtain years lived with disability (YLDs). Years of life lost (YLLs) were calculated as age-specific cancer deaths multiplied by the standard life expectancy at the age of death. The main outcome was DALYs (the sum of YLLs and YLDs). Estimates were presented globally and by Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintiles (countries ranked and divided into five equal SDI groups), and all estimates were presented with corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). For this analysis, we used the age range of 15–39 years to define adolescents and young adults. Findings: There were 1·19 million (95% UI 1·11–1·28) incident cancer cases and 396 000 (370 000–425 000) deaths due to cancer among people aged 15–39 years worldwide in 2019. Abstract

BACKGROUND: In estimating the global burden of cancer, adolescents and young adults with cancer are often overlooked, despite being a distinct subgroup with unique epidemiology, clinical care needs, and societal impact. Comprehensive estimates of the global cancer burden in adolescents and young adults (aged 15-39 years) are lacking. To address this gap, we analysed results from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019, with a focus on the outcome of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), to inform global cancer control measures in adolescents and young adults. METHODS: Using the GBD 2019 methodology, international mortality data were collected from vital registration systems, verbal autopsies, and population-based cancer registry inputs modelled with mortality-to-incidence ratios (MIRs). Incidence was computed with mortality estimates and corresponding MIRs. Prevalence estimates were calculated using modelled survival and multiplied by disability weights to obtain years lived with disability (YLDs). Years of life lost (YLLs) were calculated as age-specific cancer deaths multiplied by the standard life expectancy at the age of death. The main outcome was DALYs (the sum of YLLs and YLDs). Estimates were presented globally and by Socio-demographic Index (SDI) quintiles (countries ranked and divided into five equal SDI groups), and all estimates were presented with corresponding 95% uncertainty intervals (UIs). For this analysis, we used the age range of 15-39 years to define adolescents and young adults. FINDINGS: There were 1·19 million (95% UI 1·11-1·28) incident cancer cases and 396 000 (370 000-425 000) deaths due to cancer among people aged 15-39 years worldwide in 2019. Abstract

PURPOSE: The global pediatric oncology clinical research landscape, particularly in Central and South America, Africa, and Asia, which bear the highest burden of global childhood cancer cases, is less characterized in the literature. Review of how existing pediatric cancer clinical trial groups internationally have been formed and how their research goals have been pursued is critical for building global collaborative research and data-sharing efforts, in line with the WHO Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer. METHODS: A narrative literature review of collaborative groups performing pediatric cancer clinical research in each continent was conducted. An inventory of research groups was assembled and reviewed by current pediatric cancer regional and continental leaders. Each group was narratively described with identification of common structural and research themes among consortia. RESULTS: There is wide variability in the structure, history, and goals of pediatric cancer clinical trial collaborative groups internationally. Several continental regions have longstanding endogenously-formed clinical trial groups that have developed and published numerous adapted treatment regimens to improve outcomes, whereas other regions have consortia focused on developing foundational database registry infrastructure supported by large multinational organizations or twinning relationships. CONCLUSION: There cannot be a one-size-fits-all approach to increasing collaboration between international pediatric cancer clinical trial groups, as this requires a nuanced understanding of local stakeholders and resources necessary to form partnerships. Needs assessments, performed either by local consortia or in conjunction with international partners, have generated productive clinical trial infrastructure. Abstract

BACKGROUND: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) disrupted pediatric oncology care globally, increasing demands on health care providers (HCPs) who adapted to continue care. This study sought to characterize the pandemic's impact on pediatric oncology HCPs worldwide. METHODS: A 60-item survey focused on changes to clinical care, resources, and effects on clinicians. A diverse subgroup of institutions was purposefully selected for focus groups that explored teamwork, communication, and changes to care delivery. RESULTS: The survey included 311 responses from 213 institutions representing 79 countries. Sixteen institutions participated in 19 multidisciplinary focus groups in 8 languages. Decreased clinical staff availability was cited by 51% of institutions as a major impact. Staffing modifications included decreased provider availability (66% of institutions), roles or responsibility changes, and transfer outside the specialty. Physical effects included frequent COVID-19 illness; 8% of respondents reported HCP deaths. Fifty percent of providers did not have the necessary personal protective equipment. HCPs also experienced psychological distress and financial concerns. Findings indicated more frequent impact on nurses than other providers. Impacts were described across all hospital resource levels, with staffing modifications more frequent in countries with higher COVID-19 incidence (P < .001) and mortality rate (P = .004). Focus groups revealed negative impacts were stabilized by increased teamwork, communication, contributions outside usual roles, policies aimed at optimizing safety, and feeling that they were contributing. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 had a profound impact on the pediatric oncology workforce, creating challenging modifications to staffing and resulting in physical, psychological, and financial distress. Despite these challenges, HCPs caring for children with cancer came together to continue to provide high-quality care.

Abstract

Resumen. El presente trabajo se realizó en el municipio de Tepalcingo, Morelos, México, con el objetivo de determinar la incidencia y severidad del daño causado por Diatraea saccharalis (Fabricius) (barrenador del tallo) en cuatro genotipos de maíz (H-515, Zapata 7, H-507 y Criollo). De cada genotipo se seleccionaron 10 plantas por repetición, las cuales fueron cortadas longitudinalmente para extraer larvas y pupas de lepidópteros, las cuales fueron identificadas taxonómicamente. Además, se midió la extensión del daño causado por el barrenador en los tallos de maíz con la ayuda de un flexómetro, calculando el porcentaje de plantas afectadas. Los resultados obtenidos se ajustaron por arco seno de la raíz cuadrada y se analizaron en un diseño de bloques al azar con el programa SAS versión 9.1. La separación de medias se hizo mediante la prueba de Tukey al 0,05. La identificación realizada permite registrar por primera vez a D. saccharalis en Tepalcingo, Morelos, México, con una incidencia del 16,44 al 22,30% en los genotipos Criollo y H-515 respectivamente. En cuanto a la severidad del daño, este alcanzo el 14,32% en Criollo y 10,4% en Zapata 7.

Abstract

New SHRIMP U-Pb zircon ages are reported for igneous and sedimentary rocks of the Famatina Complex, constraining the age of the magmatism and the ensialic basins. Together with whole-rock and isotope geochemistry for the igneous rocks from the complex, these ages indicate that the voluminous parental magmas of metaluminous composition were derived by partial melting of an older lithosphere without significant asthenospheric contribution. This magmatism was initiated in the Early Ordovician (481 Ma). During the Mid-Late Ordovician, the magmatism ceased (463 Ma), resulting in a short-lived (no more than ~20 Ma) and relatively narrow (~100-150 km) magmatic belt, in contrast to the long-lived cordilleran magmatism of the Andes. The exhumation rate of the Famatina Complex was considerably high and the erosional stripping and deposition of Ordovician sediments occurred soon after of the emplacement of the igneous source rocks during the Early to mid-Ordovician. During the upper Mid Ordovician the clastic contribution was mainly derived from plutonic rocks. Magmatism was completely extinguished in the Mid Ordovician and the sedimentary basins closed in the early Late Ordovician.

49. Global effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on paediatric cancer care: a cross-sectional study

BACKGROUND: Although mortality due to COVID-19 has been reportedly low among children with cancer, changes in health-care services due to the pandemic have affected cancer care delivery. This study aimed to assess the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on childhood cancer care worldwide. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to paediatric oncology providers worldwide from June 22 to Aug 21, 2020, through the St Jude Global Alliance and International Society for Paediatric Oncology listservs and regional networks. The survey included 60 questions to assess institution characteristics, the number of patients diagnosed with COVID-19, disruptions to cancer care (eg, service closures and treatment abandonment), adaptations to care, and resources (including availability of clinical staff and personal protective equipment). Surveys were included for analysis if respondents answered at least two thirds of the items, and the responses were analysed at the institutional level. FINDINGS: Responses from 311 health-care professionals at 213 institutions in 79 countries from all WHO regions were included in the analysis. 187 (88%) of 213 centres had the capacity to test for SARS-CoV-2 and a median of two (range 0-350) infections per institutution were reported in children with cancer. 15 (7%) centres reported complete closure of paediatric haematology-oncology services (median 10 days, range 1-75 days). Overall, 2% (5 of 213) of centres were no longer evaluating new cases of suspected cancer, while 43% (90 of 208) of the remaining centers described a decrease in newly diagnosed paediatric cancer cases. 73 (34%) centres reported increased treatment abandonment (ie, failure to initiate cancer therapy or a delay in care of 4 weeks or longer). Changes to cancer care delivery included: reduced surgical care (153 [72%]), blood product shortages (127 [60%]), chemotherapy modifications (121 [57%]), and interruptions to radiotherapy (43 [28%] of 155 institutions that provided radiotherapy before the pandemic). Abstract

The Famatinian is a segment of the Ordovician Terra Australis accretionary orogen that stretched along the SW Margin of Gondwana from Australia to Colombia. The present knowledge of this orogenic segment still is incomplete. We present geochemistry and U–Pb SHRIMP zircon geochronology of igneous and metamorphic rocks from the Central Famatinian Domain, one of the several domains recognized by Rapela et al. (Earth Sci Rev 187: 259–285. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.earscirev.2018.10.006) that includes the northern Sierras Pampeanas and the southern Puna of North West Argentina. Six samples of igneous rocks (peraluminous granitoids, mafic and felsic rocks, volcanic/subvolcanic rocks) and six samples of associated meta-sedimentary rocks, all from the Puna were dated and chemically analysed. The results indicate that the Central Famatinian Domain is in turn a composite domain that includes a Cordilleran-type magmatic arc (ca. 470 Ma) and a yuxtaposed fault-bounded older terrain formed in an extensional setting at the very start of the Famatinian orogeny, between 480 and 485 Ma, i.e., shortly after the SW Gondwana margin switched from passive to active. This short period of extension with related sedimentation, volcanism and mainly granitoid plutonism has not been previously recognised. It occurred before the Cordilleran-type magmatic arc -that resulted from a magmatic flare-up between ca. 473 and 468 Ma-, set up coincident with a contractional phase. The evidence confirms that accretionary orogeny results from tectonic switching (pull–push orogeny) and that the extensional and contractional phases are of relatively short duration.
