We observed NGC 1624-2, the O-type star with the largest known magnetic field Bp~20 kG), in X-rays with the ACIS-S camera onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. Our two observations were obtained at the minimum and maximum of the periodic Halpha emission cycle, corresponding to the rotational phases where the magnetic field is the closest to equator-on and pole-on, respectively. With these observations, we aim to characterise the star's magnetosphere via the X-ray emission produced by magnetically confined wind shocks. Our main findings are: (i) The observed spectrum of NGC 1624-2 is hard, similar to the magnetic O-type star Theta 1 Ori C, with only a few photons detected below 0.8 keV. The emergent X-ray flux is 30% lower at the Halpha minimum phase. (ii) Our modelling indicated that this seemingly hard spectrum is in fact a consequence of relatively soft intrinsic emission, similar to other magnetic Of?p stars, combined with a large amount of local absorption (~1-3 x 10^22 cm^-2). This combination is necessary to reproduce both the prominent Mg and Si spectral features, and the lack of flux at low energies. NGC 1624-2 is intrinsically luminous in X-rays (log LX emission ~ 33.4) but 70-95% of the X-ray emission produced by magnetically confined wind shocks is absorbed before it escapes the magnetosphere (log LX ISM corrected ~ 32.5). Building on results from the Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) project, this paper shows how a two-parameter classification of massive-star magnetospheres in terms of the magnetic wind confinement (which sets the Alfv\'en radius RA) and stellar rotation (which sets the Kepler co-rotation radius RK) provides a useful organisation of both observational signatures and theoretical predictions. We compile the first comprehensive study of inferred and observed values for relevant stellar and magnetic parameters of 64 confirmed magnetic OB stars with Teff > 16 kK. Using these parameters, we locate the stars in the magnetic confinement-rotation diagram, a log-log plot of RK vs. RA. This diagram can be subdivided into regimes of centrifugal magnetospheres (CM), with RA > RK, vs. dynamical magnetospheres (DM), with RK > RA. We show how key observational diagnostics, like the presence and characteristics of Halpha emission, depend on a star's position within the diagram, as well as other parameters, especially the expected wind mass-loss rates. In particular, we identify two distinct populations of magnetic stars with Halpha emission: namely, slowly rotating O-type stars with narrow emission consistent with a DM, and more rapidly rotating B-type stars with broader emission associated with a CM. For O-type stars, the high mass-loss rates are sufficient to accumulate enough material for line emission even within the relatively short free-fall timescale associated with a DM: this high mass-loss rate also leads to a rapid magnetic spindown of the stellar rotation. For the B-type stars, the longer confinement of a CM is required to accumulate sufficient emitting material from their relatively weak winds, which also lead to much longer spindown timescales. We report the detection of a strong, organized magnetic field in the secondary component of the massive O8III/I+O7.5V/III double-lined spectroscopic binary system HD 47129 (Plaskett's star), in the context of the Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) survey. Eight independent Stokes $V$ observations were acquired using the ESPaDOnS spectropolarimeter at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope and the Narval spectropolarimeter at the T\'elescope Bernard Lyot. Using Least-Squares Deconvolution we obtain definite detections of signal in Stokes $V$ in 3 observations. No significant signal is detected in the diagnostic null ($N$) spectra. The Zeeman signatures are broad and track the radial velocity of the secondary component; we therefore conclude that the rapidly-rotating secondary component is the magnetized star. Correcting the polarized spectra for the line and continuum of the (sharp-lined) primary, we measured the longitudinal magnetic field from each observation. The longitudinal field of the secondary is variable and exhibits extreme values of $-810\pm 150$ G and $+680\pm 190$ G, implying a minimum surface dipole polar strength of $2850\pm 500$ G. In contrast, we derive an upper limit ($3\sigma$) to the primary's surface magnetic field of 230 G. The combination of a strong magnetic field and rapid rotation leads us to conclude that the secondary hosts a centrifugal magnetosphere fed through a magnetically confined wind. We revisit the properties of the optical line profiles and X-ray emission - previously interpreted as a consequence of colliding stellar winds - in this context. We conclude that HD 47129 represents a heretofore unique stellar system - a close, massive binary with a rapidly rotating, magnetized component - that will be a rich target for further study., Comment: 10 pages, MNRAS, in press

This paper presents a first observational investigation of the faint Of?cp star NGC 1624-2, yielding important new constraints on its spectral and physical characteristics, rotation, magnetic field strength, X-ray emission and magnetospheric properties. Modeling the spectrum and spectral energy distribution, we conclude that NGC 1624-2 is a main sequence star of mass M {\simeq} 30 M{\odot}, and infer an effective temperature of 35 {\pm} 2 kK and log g = 4.0 {\pm} 0.2. Based on an extensive time series of optical spectral observations we report significant variability of a large number of spectral lines, and infer a unique period of 157.99 {\pm} 0.94 d which we interpret as the rotational period of the star. We report the detection of a very strong - 5.35 {\pm} 0.5 kG - longitudinal magnetic field , coupled with probable Zeeman splitting of Stokes I profiles of metal lines confirming a surface field modulus of 14 {\pm} 1 kG, consistent with a surface dipole of polar strength >~ 20 kG. This is the largest magnetic field ever detected in an O-type star, and the first report of Zeeman splitting of Stokes I profiles in such an object. We also report the detection of reversed Stokes V profiles associated with weak, high-excitation emission lines of O iii, which we propose may form in the close magnetosphere of the star. We analyze archival Chandra ACIS-I X-ray data, inferring a very hard spectrum with an X-ray efficiency log Lx/Lbol = -6.4, a factor of 4 larger than the canonical value for O-type stars and comparable to that of the young magnetic O-type star {\theta}1 Ori C and other Of?p stars. Finally, we examine the probable magnetospheric properties of the star, reporting in particular very strong magnetic confinement of the stellar wind, with {\eta}* {\simeq} 1.5 {\times} 10^4, and a very large Alfven radius, RAlf = 11.4 R*., Comment: 17 pages, MNRAS accepted and in press

The young O9.5 V spectroscopic binary Theta 2 Ori A shows moderately hard X-ray emission and relatively narrow X-ray lines, suggesting that it may be a Magnetically Confined Wind Shock (MCWS) source, similar to its more massive analogue Theta 1 Ori C. X-ray flares occurring near periastron led to the suggestion that the flares are produced via magnetic reconnection as magnetospheres on both components of the Theta 2 Ori A binary interact at closest approach. We use a series of high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of Theta 2 Ori A to place an upper limit on the magnetic field strength of 135 G (95% credible region). Such a weak dipole field would not produce magnetic confinement, or a large magnetosphere. A sub-pixel analysis of the Chandra ACIS images of Theta 2 Ori A obtained during quiescence and flaring show that the hard, flaring X-rays are offset from the soft, quiescent emission by 0.4 arcsec. If the soft emission is associated with the A1/A2 spectroscopic binary, the offset and position angle of the hard, flaring source place it at the location of the intermediate-mass A3 companion, discovered via speckle interferometry. The spectropolarimetric and X-ray results taken together point to the A3 companion, not the massive A1/A2 binary, as the source of hard, flaring X-ray emission. We also discuss a similar analysis performed for the magnetic Bp star Sigma Ori E. X-ray surveys of the Carina nebula have revealed a few hard and luminous sources associated with early-type stars. Such unusual characteristics for the high-energy emission may be related to magnetically-confined winds. To search for the presence of magnetic fields in these objects, we performed a limited spectropolarimetric survey using the FORS instrument. The multi-object mode was used, so that a total of 21 OB stars could be investigated during a one-night-long run. A magnetic field was detected in two objects of the sample, with a 6 sigma significance; Tr16-22 and 13. Such a detection was expected for Tr16-22, as its X-ray emission is too bright, variable and hard, compared to other late-type O or O+OB systems. It is more surprising for Tr16-13, a poorly known star which so far has never shown any peculiar characteristics. Subsequent monitoring is now needed to ascertain the physical properties of these objects and enable a full modelling of their magnetic atmospheres and winds., Comment: 10 pages including the online appendix, accepted for publication by MNRAS

In the framework of the Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) project, a HARPSpol Large Program at the 3.6m-ESO telescope has recently started to collect high-resolution spectropolarimetric data of a large number of Southern massive OB stars in the field of the Galaxy and in many young clusters and associations. In this Letter, we report on the first discoveries of magnetic fields in two massive stars with HARPSpol - HD 130807 and HD 122451, and confirm the presence of a magnetic field at the surface of HD 105382 that was previously observed with a low spectral resolution device. The longitudinal magnetic field measurements are strongly varying for HD 130807 from $\sim$-100 G to $\sim$700 G. Those of HD 122451 and HD 105382 are less variable with values ranging from $\sim$-40 to -80 G, and from $\sim$-300 to -600 G, respectively. The discovery and confirmation of three new magnetic massive stars, including at least two He-weak stars, is an important contribution to one of the MiMeS objectives: the understanding of origin of magnetic fields in massive stars and their impacts on stellar structure and evolution., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letter

The Spitzer GLIMPSE and MIPSGAL surveys have revealed a wealth of details of the Galactic plane. We use them to study the energetics and dust properties of M16, one of the best known SFR. We present MIPSGAL observations of M16 at 24 and 70 $\mu$m and combine them with previous IR data. The MIR image shows a shell inside the molecular borders of the nebula. The morphologies at 24 and 70 $\mu$m are different, and its color ratio is unusually warm. The FIR image resembles the one at 8 $\mu$m that enhances the molecular cloud. We measure IR SEDs within the shell and the PDRs. We use the DUSTEM model to fit the SEDs and constrain dust temperature, dust size distribution, and ISRF intensity relative to that provided by the star cluster NGC6611. Within the PDRs, the dust temperature, the dust size distribution, and the ISRF intensity are in agreement with expectations. Within the shell, the dust is hotter and an ISRF larger than that provided by NGC6611 is required. We quantify two solutions. (1) The size distribution of the dust in the shell is not that of interstellar dust. (2) The dust emission arises from a hot plasma where UV and collisions with electrons contribute to the heating. We suggest two interpretations for the shell. (1) The shell matter is supplied by photo-evaporative flows arising from dense gas exposed to ionized radiation. The flows renew the shell matter as it is pushed by the stellar winds. Within this scenario, we conclude that massive SFR such as M16 have a major impact on the carbon dust size distribution. The grinding of the carbon dust could result from shattering in collisions within shocks driven by the interaction between the winds and the shell. (2) We consider a scenario where the shell is a SNR. We would be witnessing a specific time in the evolution of the SNR where the plasma pressure and temperature would be such that the SNR cools through dust emission., Comment: 15 pages, 18 figures, (almost) accepted for publication in A&A

The key empirical property of the X-ray emission from O stars is a strong correlation between the bolometric and X-ray luminosities. In the framework of the Chandra Carina Complex Project, 129 O and B stars have been detected as X-ray sources; 78 of those, all with spectral type earlier than B3, have enough counts for at least a rough X-ray spectral characterization. This leads to an estimate of the Lx/Lbol ratio for an exceptional number of 60 O stars belonging to the same region and triples the number of Carina massive stars studied spectroscopically in X-rays. The derived log(Lx/Lbol) is -7.26 for single objects, with a dispersion of only 0.21dex. Using the properties of hot massive stars listed in the literature, we compare the X-ray luminosities of different types of objects. In the case of O stars, the Lx/Lbol ratios are similar for bright and faint objects, as well as for stars of different luminosity classes or spectral types. Binaries appear only slightly harder and slightly more luminous in X-rays than single objects; the differences are not formally significant (at the 1% level), except for the Lx/Lbol ratio in the medium (1.0--2.5keV) energy band. Weak-wind objects have similar X-ray luminosities but they display slightly softer spectra compared to "normal" O stars with the same bolometric luminosity. Discarding three overluminous objects, we find a very shallow trend of harder emission in brighter objects. The properties of the few B stars bright enough to yield some spectral information appear to be different overall (constant X-ray luminosities, harder spectra), hinting that another mechanism for producing X-rays, besides wind shocks, might be at work. However, it must be stressed that the earliest and X-ray brightest amongst these few detected objects are similar to the latest O stars, suggesting a possibly smooth transition between the two processes., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures. The Magnetism in Massive Stars (MiMeS) Project is a consensus collaboration among many of the foremost international researchers of the physics of hot, massive stars, with the basic aim of understanding the origin, evolution and impact of magnetic fields in these objects. At the time of writing, MiMeS Large Programs have acquired over 950 high-resolution polarised spectra of about 150 individual stars with spectral types from B5-O4, discovering new magnetic fields in a dozen hot, massive stars. The quality of this spectral and magnetic mat\'eriel is very high, and the Collaboration is keen to connect with colleagues capable of exploiting the data in new or unforeseen ways. We present results of a 90 ksec Chandra X-ray observation of the young sigma Orionis cluster (age ~3 Myr) obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. We use the high resolution grating spectrum and moderate resolution CCD spectrum of the massive central star sigma Ori AB (O9.5V + B0.5V) to test wind shock theories of X-ray emission and also analyze the high spatial resolution zero-order ACIS-S image of the central cluster region. Chandra detected 42 X-ray sources on the primary CCD (ACIS-S3). All but five have near-IR or optical counterparts and about one-fourth are variable. Notable high-mass stellar detections are sigma Ori AB, the magnetic B star sigma Ori E, and the B5V binary HD 37525. Most of the other detections have properties consistent with lower mass K or M-type stars. We present the first X-ray spectrum of the unusual infrared source IRS1 located 3.3 arc-sec north of sigma Ori AB, which is likely an embedded T Tauri star whose disk/envelope is being photoevaporated by sigma Ori AB. We focus on the radiative wind shock interpretation of the soft luminous X-ray emission from sigma Ori AB, but also consider possible alternatives including magnetically-confined wind shocks and colliding wind shocks. Its emission lines show no significant asymmetries or centroid shifts and are moderately broadened to HWHM ~ 264 km/s, or one-fourth the terminal wind speed. Forbidden lines in He-like ions are formally undetected, implying strong UV suppression. The Mg XI triplet forms in the wind acceleration zone within one stellar radius above the surface. These X-ray properties are consistent in several respects with the predictions of radiative wind shock theory for an optically thin wind, but explaining the narrow line widths presents a challenge to the theory., Comment: To appear in ApJ; 35 pages, 22 figures

We present results of a sensitive 76 ksec Chandra observation of the young stellar cluster in NGC 2024 (d = 415 pc) in the Orion B giant molecular cloud. Previous infrared observations have shown that this remarkable cluster contains several hundred embedded young stars, most of which are still surrounded by circumstellar disks. Thus, it presents a rare opportunity to study X-ray activity in a large sample of optically invisible protostars and classical T Tauri stars (cTTS) undergoing accretion. Chandra detected 283 X-ray sources of which 248 were identified with counterparts at other wavelengths, mostly in the near-IR. Astrometric registration of Chandra images against 2MASS resulted in sub-arcsecond positional accuracy and high-confidence identifications of IR counterparts. The Chandra detections are characterized by hard heavily- absorbed spectra and spectacular variability. Spectral analysis of >100 sources gives a mean extinction A_v = 10.5 mag and typical plasma energies E = 3 keV. The range of variability includes rapid impulsive flares and persistent low-level fluctuations indicative of strong magnetic activity, as well as slow rises and falls in count rate whose origin is more obscure. Some outbursts reached sustained temperatures of kT = 6 - 10 keV. Chandra detected all but one of a subsample of 27 cTTS identified from previous IR photometry, and their X-ray and bolometric luminosities are correlated. We also report the X-ray detection of IRS 2b, which is thought to be a massive embedded late O or early B star that may be the ionizing source of NGC 2024. Seven millimeter-bright cores (FIR 1-7) in NGC 2024 that may be protostellar were not detected, with the possible exception of faint emission near the unusual core FIR-4., Comment: approx. 31 pages plus 19 figures and 1 table

We present the analysis of the X-ray data of the young active star HD35850 obtained with ASCA and ROSAT. Our main goal was to see if there is a difference in the elemental abundances of active stars between young and more evolved objects. A two temperature plasma with subsolar abundances, of the order of Z = 0.15 - 0.3, is required to fit the SIS spectra. Similar results are obtained from a ROSAT PSPC observation. Metal abundances of 0.2 - 0.4 the solar value are required to fit both the ASCA and ROSAT data together. From a simultaneous SIS0+SIS1 spectral fit, with 2T plasma models and abundances free to vary in non-solar proportions, we find that, besides N, O and Ne for which we find very low values, all other elements have values relative to solar abundances around 0.2-0.3. These subsolar abundances are in line with those typically observed in more evolved, active stars like RS CVn and Algol-type binaries. The two temperature values required to fit the ASCA SIS spectra are about 0.5 and 1.0 keV. These temperatures, especially the higher one, are lower with respect to the values found for the RS CVn and Algol binaries or for the young star AB Dor, but higher than other single G/K stars. All our data show that this single, late F-type star is actually a very active source, indirectly confirming that this fast rotating star is probably a young object. In the simultaneous fit of the ASCA+ROSAT data, a third temperature is required. However this is not just an addition of a softer component, but is more a redistribution of the dominant temperatures. Indeed, the range spanned by the three temperatures, from 5 to 15 million degrees, is not very large., Comment: 10 pages, 5 tables and 3 figures. In press on A&A
