Abstract

The INTENTAS project aims to develop an atomic sensor utilizing entangled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) in a microgravity environment. This key achievement is necessary to advance the capability for measurements that benefit from both entanglement-enhanced sensitivities and extended interrogation times. The project addresses significant challenges related to size, weight, and power management (SWaP) specific to the experimental platform at the Einstein-Elevator in Hannover. The design ensures a low-noise environment essential for the creation and detection of entanglement. Additionally, the apparatus features an innovative approach to the all-optical creation of BECs, providing a flexible system for various configurations and meeting the requirements for rapid turnaround times. Successful demonstration of this technology in the Einstein-Elevator will pave the way for a future deployment in space, where its potential applications will unlock high-precision quantum sensing.

Abstract

To implement Regulation (EU) No 1143/2014 on the prevention and management of the in-troduction and spread of invasive alien species, an action plan for the prevention and man-agement of unintentional introduction and spread of invasive alien species needed to be de-veloped by EU member states. This report presents the procedure for drawing up the firstGerman action plan and its contents.The action plan is based on a previous analysis of pathways of introduction and spread ofinvasive alien species which are to be regarded as priority for Germany. For each priority path-way, a literature review was performed to propose possible actions, which were further de-veloped, assessed and substantiated with the help of bilateral talks with experts from all sec-tors involved. Based on a criteria catalogue, altogether 24 measures were selected for theaction plan. The focus of the measures is to raise awareness among the public and affectedparties and to minimize the contamination, for example of goods, vehicles and equipment, byinvasive alien species. 19 different sectors will be involved in implementing the measures. Inaddition to 20 measures specific to single pathways, four measures across sectors and path-ways were developed to allow an effective implementation. The draft measures went througha multi-stage participation and consultation process with the federal ministries involved, aconsultation with the federal states and a public participation, which ensured broad ac-ceptance of the content of the action plan.The first action plan is an important tool in nature conservation for the prevention of biologicalinvasions in Germany and was published in the federal Gazette on 9 August 2021 with an an-nouncement dated 21 June 2021. The present BfN publication also lists further measures thatcould subsequently be included after subsequent review in future action plans in order toprevent the unintentional introduction and spread of invasive species even more effectively.

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to propose a general interface for coupling general circulation models (GCMs) to land surface schemes (LSS) in order to achieve a plug compatibility between these complex models. As surface parameterizations include more processes, they have moved from being subroutines of GCMs to independent schemes which can also be applied for other purposes. This evolution has raised the problem within climate modeling groups of coupling these schemes to GCMs in a simple and flexible way. As LSS reaches a larger independence, a general interface is needed to enable exchange within the community. This paper discusses the tasks LSS have to fulfill when coupled to a GCM after a review of the current state of the art and the likely future evolutions of both components. The numerical schemes used for the processes which couple the land surfaces to the atmosphere are reviewed to ensure that the interface can be applied to all LSS and GCMs after only minor changes.

Abstract

Gemäß der Verordnung (EU) Nr. 1143/2014 über die Prävention und das Management der Einbringung und Ausbreitung invasiver gebietsfremder Arten erstellt jeder Mitgliedstaat der Europäische Union (EU) einen Aktionsplan mit Maßnahmen, die die nicht vorsätzliche Einbringung und Ausbreitung invasiver gebietsfremder Arten verhindern sollen. Im vorliegenden Beitrag wird der erste deutsche Aktionsplan vorgestellt. Der Aktionsplan stützt sich auf eine vorangegangene Analyse, in der ermittelt wurde, welche Einbringungs- und Ausbreitungspfade invasiver gebietsfremder Arten für Deutschland als prioritär anzusehen sind. Für jeden prioritären Pfad erfolgte eine Literaturrecherche nach möglichen Maßnahmenvorschlägen, die mithilfe bilateraler Gespräche mit Expertinnen und Experten aller verantwortlichen Sektoren weiterentwickelt, gewichtet und konkretisiert wurden. Anhand eines Kriterienkatalogs wurden insgesamt 24 Maßnahmen für den Aktionsplan ausgewählt. Die Schwerpunkte dieser Maßnahmen sind, die Öffentlichkeit und betroffene Fachkreise zu sensibilisieren sowie die Kontaminierung, bspw. von Gütern, Fahrzeugen und Geräten, durch invasive gebietsfremde Arten zu minimieren. 19 verschiedene Sektoren werden bei der Umsetzung der Maßnahmen eingebunden. Für eine möglichst effektive Umsetzung wurden neben 20 pfadspezifischen Maßnahmen zusätzlich 4 sektoren- und pfadübergreifende Maßnahmen entwickelt. Abstract

Resumen: El fenómeno de fatiga como unos de los principales mecanismos de deterioro de las capas asfálticas. El ensayo de fatiga a flexión a cuatro puntos de apoyo es uno de los procedimientos más utilizados para determinar la resistencia a la fatiga de las mezclas asfálticas. Existen, a nivel internacional, diversas normas que estandarizan este tipo de ensayo, las cuales se diferencian básicamente por la forma de la onda de carga aplicada y por el criterio de rotura utilizado. Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar los resultados de la influencia del tipo de onda de carga utilizada, haversine o sinusoidal, en la resistencia a la fatiga de una mezcla asfáltica, como también, la influencia de los modelos de fatiga obtenidos en la previsión de la rotura por fatiga de la capa asfáltica en una estructura de un pavimento flexible. Al final, se concluyó que la vida útil de la capa asfáltica estimada utilizando los modelos obtenidos en el ensayo con ondas con forma haversine fue 67 veces mayor que cuando estimada con los modelos de los ensayos realizados con carga sinusoidal. Abstract: The phenomenon of fatigue can be considered as one of the main causes of the asphalt Surface course failure. The Four-Point Bending Apparatus is the widespread equipment used to determine the fatigue resistance of asphalt mixtures. Worldwide there are several standard procedures that rule this test. The main difference between them remains in the waveform, in wich the load is applied, and in the failure criteria. This paper reports the influence from the waveform, haversine orsinusoidal, on the fatigue resistance of an asphalt mixture. In adition, through numerical simulation, it was evaluated ones found on sinusoidal tests.

Abstract

The Mediterranean is expected to be one of the most prominent and vulnerable climate change "hotspots" of the twenty-first century, and the physical mechanisms underlying this finding are still not clear. Furthermore, complex interactions and feedbacks involving ocean-atmosphere-land-biogeochemical processes play a prominent role in modulating the climate and environment of the Mediterranean region on a range of spatial and temporal scales. Therefore, it is critical to provide robust climate change information for use in vulnerability-impact-adaptation assessment studies considering the Mediterranean as a fully coupled environmental system. The Mediterranean Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (Med-CORDEX) initiative aims at coordinating the Mediterranean climate modeling community toward the development of fully coupled regional climate simulations, improving all relevant components of the system from atmosphere and ocean dynamics to land surface, hydrology, and biogeochemical processes. The primary goals of Med-CORDEX are to improve understanding of past climate variability and trends and to provide more accurate and reliable future projections, assessing in a quantitative and robust way the added value of using high-resolution and coupled regional climate models. The coordination activities and the scientific outcomes of Med-CORDEX can produce an important framework to foster the development of regional Earth system models in several key regions worldwide. ©2016 American Meteorological Society.

30. Characterization of the wind speed variability and future change in the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands

Abstract

Wind energy is susceptible to global climate change because it could alter the wind patterns. Then, improvement of our knowledge of wind field variability is crucial to optimize the use of wind resources in a given region. Here, we quantify the effects of climate change on the surface wind speed field over the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands using an ensemble of four regional climate models driven by a global climate model. Regions of the Iberian Peninsula with coherent temporal variability in wind speed in each of the models are identified and analysed using cluster analysis. These regions are continuous in each model and exhibit a high degree of overlap across the models. The models forced by the European Reanalysis Interim (ERA-Interim) reanalysis are validated against the European Climate Assessment and Dataset wind. We find that regional models are able to simulate with reasonable skill the spatial distribution of wind speed at 10 m in the Iberian Peninsula, identifying areas with common wind variability. Under the Special Report on Emissions Scenarios (SRES) A1B climate change scenario, the wind speed in the identified regions for 2031–2050 is up to 5% less than during the 1980–1999 control period for all models. The models also agree on the time evolution of spatially averaged wind speed in each region, showing a negative trend for all of them. These tendencies depend on the region and are significant at p = 5% or slightly more for annual trends, while seasonal trends are not significant in most of the regions and seasons. Abstract

Non-native species cause changes in the ecosystems to which they are introduced. These changes, or some of them, are usually termed impacts; they can be manifold and potentially damaging to ecosystems and biodiversity. However, the impacts of most non-native species are poorly understood, and a synthesis of available information is being hindered because authors often do not clearly define impact. We argue that explicitly defining the impact of non-native species will promote progress toward a better understanding of the implications of changes to biodiversity and ecosystems caused by non-native species; help disentangle which aspects of scientific debates about non-native species are due to disparate definitions and which represent true scientific discord; and improve communication between scientists from different research disciplines and between scientists, managers, and policy makers. For these reasons and based on examples from the literature, we devised seven key questions that fall into 4 categories: directionality, classification and measurement, ecological or socio-economic changes, and scale. Abstract

Despite intensive research during the past decade on the effects of alien species, invasion science still lacks the capacity to accurately predict the impacts of those species and, therefore, to provide timely advice to managers on where limited resources should be allocated. This capacity has been limited partly by the context-dependent nature of ecological impacts, research highly skewed toward certain taxa and habitat types, and the lack of standardized methods for detecting and quantifying impacts. We review different strategies, including specific experimental and observational approaches, for detecting and quantifying the ecological impacts of alien species. These include a four-way experimental plot design for comparing impact studies of different organisms. Furthermore, we identify hypothesis-driven parameters that should be measured at invaded sites to maximize insights into the nature of the impact. We also present strategies for recognizing high-impact species. Our recommendations provide a foundation for developing systematic quantitative measurements to allow comparisons of impacts across alien species, sites, and time.

45. Effects of Raised [K+]o And [Ca2+]o on Conjugation and on Electrophysiological Parameters in the Marine Ciliate Euplotes Vannus

Abstract

Co-stimulation of mixed complementary mating types of Euplotes vannus was blocked if [K+]o was raised to at least 60 mmol l−1. This inhibition could be cancelled by simultaneously raising [Ca2+]o. An electrophysiological investigation showed that elevation of either [K+]o or [Ca2+]o depolarized the cell. The effect of potassium was observed at concentrations above 50 mmol l−1, with a slope of about 38 mV/decade change, and was accompanied by a reduction in membrane resistance. Calcium had an effect at lower concentrations than potassium, but the slope was lower, and was associated with a rise in resistance. When potassium and calcium were applied together in ratios at which the calcium level was just sufficient to annul the K+-induced block of conjugation, the membrane was depolarized only slightly more than in potassium alone, and resting resistance was near the control level. It is therefore proposed that high [K+]o blocks co-stimulation by acting upon membrane resting conductance.

Abstract

Detailed investigations performed for a standard 1,300 MW$_{e}$ PWR show that (Th,U)O$_{2}$ and (Th,Pu)O$_{2}$ fuels can be inserted in 3 and 4 cycle operating schemes without modifications in the fuel assembly or core design. The most important aspects of the fuel cycle have been covered. Ex-gel pelletizing of (Th,U)O$_{2}$ fuel making use of available LWR and HTR fuel manufacturing technology was demonstrated. The most promising applicationfor Th-based fuels at present was proved to be the use of recycle plutonium in extended burnup once-through fuel cycle. The program was performed in a cooperative way between Brazilian and German partners.

La pubblicazione raccoglie i principali risultati dei risultati della ricerca del progetto Soclimpact, con l'obiettivo di aumentare la consapevolezza sociale tra i responsabili politici e l'industria sulle conseguenze dei cambiamenti climatici a livello locale e fornire informazioni basate sulla conoscenza nella progettazione delle politiche di sostegno, dal livello locale a quello nazionale. This book provides a comprehensive overview of the future scenarios of climate change and management concerns associated with climate change impacts on the blue economy of European islands and outermost regions. The publication collects major findings of the Soclimpact project’s research outcomes, aiming to raise social awareness among policy-makers and industry about climate change consequences at local level, and provide knowledge-based information in support policy design, from local to national level.

Abstract

The Mediterranean is expected to be one of the most prominent and vulnerable climate change >hotspots> of the twenty-first century, and the physical mechanisms underlying this finding are still not clear. Furthermore, complex interactions and feedbacks involving ocean-atmosphere-land-biogeochemical processes play a prominent role in modulating the climate and environment of the Mediterranean region on a range of spatial and temporal scales. Therefore, it is critical to provide robust climate change information for use in vulnerability-impact-adaptation assessment studies considering the Mediterranean as a fully coupled environmental system. The Mediterranean Coordinated Regional Downscaling Experiment (Med-CORDEX) initiative aims at coordinating the Mediterranean climate modeling community toward the development of fully coupled regional climate simulations, improving all relevant components of the system from atmosphere and ocean dynamics to land surface, hydrology, and biogeochemical processes. The primary goals of Med-CORDEX are to improve understanding of past climate variability and trends and to provide more accurate and reliable future projections, assessing in a quantitative and robust way the added value of using high-resolution and coupled regional climate models. The coordination activities and the scientific outcomes of Med-CORDEX can produce an important framework to foster the development of regional Earth system models in several key regions worldwide., This work is a contribution to the HyMeX program supported by grants MISTRALS and ANR-12-SENV-001 REMEMBER and to the CLIMRUN project (www.climrun.eu) funded under the European Commission’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7).
