Abstract

Charged pion spectra measured in 58Ni-58Ni collisions at 1.06, 1.45 and 1.93 AGeV are interpreted in terms of a thermal model including the decay of Delta resonances. The transverse momentum spectra of pions are well reproduced by adding the pions originating from the Delta-resonance decay to the component of thermal pions, deduced from the high transverse momentum part of the pion spectra. About 10 and 18% of the nucleons are excited to Delta states at freeze-out for beam energies of 1 and 2 AGeV, respectively., Comment: 14 pages, LaTeX with 3 included figures; submitted to Physics Letters B

Abstract

Small-angle correlations of Proton pairs produced in central Ni+Ni collisions at a beam energy of 1.93 AGeV are investigated with the FOPI detector System at GSI Darmstadt. A well-defined emission source is selected by triggering on central events which comprise about 8% of the total cross section. Simultaneous comparison of longitudinal and transverse correlation functions with the predictions of the Koonin model allows to unravel the space-time ambiguity of the emission process. Taking into account the strong collactive expansion of the participant zone, which introduces a reduction of the extracted source radius of more than 30% r.m.s. radius and emission time parameters of Rrms = ( 4.2 ± 1.2) fm and trms = (11+7-5) fm/c are extracted, respectively. In contrast, the analysis of the angle-integrated correlation function gives an upper limit Rrms = (7.0 ± 1.4) fm of the source radius.

Abstract

Small-angle correlations of proton pairs produced in central Ni+Ni collisions at a beam energy of 1.93 A · GeV are investigated with the FOPI detector system at GSI Darmstadt. Simultaneous comparison of longitudinal and transverse correlation functions with the predictions of the Koonin model allows to unravel the space-time ambiguity of the source extension. The determination of the source rest frame is found essential for the identification of this effect. For the present system, the selection of central events comprising about 8% of the total cross section allows for the isolation of a compact source in momentum space which is centered around the c.m. velocity of the colliding nuclei. Taking into account the strong collective expansion of the participant zone, which introduces a reduction of the extracted source radius of more than 30%, r.m.s. radius and emission time parameters of Rrms=(4.2±1.2) fm and trms=(11+7-5) fm/c are extracted, respectively. In contrast, the analysis of the angle-integrated correlation function mixes the spatial and temporal size of the source and gives an upper limit Rrms=(7.0 ± 0.8) fm of the source radius.

Abstract

Four different combinations of 9644Ru and 9640Zr nuclei, both as projectile and target, were investigated at the same bombarding energy of 400 AMeV using a 4pi detector. The degree of isospin mixing between projectile and target nucleons is mapped across a large portion of the phase space using two different isospin-tracer observables, the number of measured protons and the t/3He yield ratio. The experimental results show that the global equilibrium is not reached even in the most central collisions. Quantitative measures of stopping and mixing are extracted from the data. They are found to exhibit a quite strong sensitivity to the in-medium (n,n) cross section used in microscopic transport calculations.

Abstract

Collisions of Au on Au at incident energies of 150, 250 and 400 A·MeV were studied with the FOPI-facility at GSI Darmstadt. Nuclear charge (Z15) and velocity of the products were detected with full azimuthal acceptance at laboratory angles 1lab30. Isotope separated light charged particles were measured with movable multiple telescopes in an angular range of 6-90. Central collisions representing about 1% of the reaction cross section were selected by requiring high total transverse energy, but vanishing side flow. The velocity space distributions and yields of the emitted fragments are reported. The data are analysed in terms of a thermal model including radial flow. A comparison with predictions of the quantum molecular model is presented.

Abstract

Small-angle correlations of Proton pairs produced in central Ni+Ni collisions at a beam energy of 1.93 AGeV are investigated with the FOPI detector System at GSI Darmstadt. A well-defined emission source is selected by triggering on central events which comprise about 8% of the total cross section. Simultaneous comparison of longitudinal and transverse correlation functions with the predictions of the Koonin model allows to unravel the space-time ambiguity of the emission process. Taking into account the strong collactive expansion of the participant zone, which introduces a reduction of the extracted source radius of more than 30% r.m.s. radius and emission time parameters of Rrms = ( 4.2 ± 1.2) fm and trms = (11+7-5) fm/c are extracted, respectively. In contrast, the analysis of the angle-integrated correlation function gives an upper limit Rrms = (7.0 ± 1.4) fm of the source radius.

Abstract

We present new experimental results concerning the azimuthal distributions of proton-likes, light and intermediate mass fragments at midrapidity for Au(100-800 A MeV)+Au collisions measured with the FOPI phase-I detector at GSI in Darmstadt. The azimuthal distributions are investigated as a function of the collision centrality, the incident energy, the fragment charge and transverse momentum. The azimuthal anisotropy is maximum for impact parameters around 7 fm. Intermediate mass fragments present a stronger out-of-plane emission signal than light fragments and a saturation is reached for Z 4. The azimuthal anisotropy increases with the fragment transverse momentum and decreases as the incident energy increases. The azimuthal anisotropy of Z = 2 particles investigated as a function of the scaled fragment transverse momentum follows an universal curve for bombarding energies between 250-800 A MeV. A signature for a transition from in-plane to out-of-plane emission is evidenced at the lowest beam energies.

Abstract

Using the FOPI detector at GSI Darmstadt, excitation functions of collective flow components were measured for the Au+Au system, in the reaction plane and out of this plane, at seven incident energies ranging from 100A MeV to 800A MeV. The threshold energies, corresponding to the onset of sideward-flow (balance energy) and squeeze-out effect (transition energy), are extracted from extrapolations of these excitation functions toward lower beam energies for charged products with Z>= 2. The transition energy is found to be larger than the balance energy. The impact parameter dependence of both balance and transition energies, when extrapolated to central collisions, suggests comparable although slightly higher values than the threshold energy for the radial flow. The relevant parameter seems to be the energy deposited into the system in order to overcome the attractive nuclear forces.

Abstract

Major intrinsic proteins (MIPs) facilitate the passive transport of small polar molecules across membranes. MIPs constitute a very old family of proteins and different forms have been found in all kinds of living organisms, including bacteria, fungi, animals, and plants. In the genomic sequence of Arabidopsis, we have identified 35 different MIP-encoding genes. Based on sequence similarity, these 35 proteins are divided into four different subfamilies: plasma membrane intrinsic proteins, tonoplast intrinsic proteins, NOD26-like intrinsic proteins also called NOD26-like MIPs, and the recently discovered small basic intrinsic proteins. In Arabidopsis, there are 13 plasma membrane intrinsic proteins, 10 tonoplast intrinsic proteins, nine NOD26-like intrinsic proteins, and three small basic intrinsic proteins. The gene structure in general is conserved within each subfamily, although there is a tendency to lose introns. Based on phylogenetic comparisons of maize (Zea mays) and Arabidopsis MIPs (AtMIPs), it is argued that the general intron patterns in the subfamilies were formed before the split of monocotyledons and dicotyledons. Although the gene structure is unique for each subfamily, there is a common pattern in how transmembrane helices are encoded on the exons in three of the subfamilies. The nomenclature for plant MIPs varies widely between different species but also between subfamilies in the same species. Based on the phylogeny of all AtMIPs, a new and more consistent nomenclature is proposed. The complete set of AtMIPs, together with the new nomenclature, will facilitate the isolation, classification, and labeling of plant MIPs from other species.

Abstract

Carbonylation is currently used as a marker for irreversible protein oxidative damage. Several studies indicate that carbonylated proteins are more prone to degradation than their nonoxidized counterparts. In this study, we observed that in Escherichia coli, more than 95% of the total carbonyl content consisted of insoluble protein and most were cytosolic proteins. We thereby demonstrate that, in vivo, carbonylated proteins are detectable mainly in an aggregate state. Finally, we show that detectable carbonylated proteins are not degraded in vivo. Here we propose that some carbonylated proteins escape degradation in vivo by forming carbonylated protein aggregates and thus becoming nondegradable. In light of these findings, we provide evidence that the accumulation of nondegradable carbonylated protein presented in an aggregate state contributes to the increases in carbonyl content observed during senescence.

Abstract

Protein aggregation is a phenomenon observed in all organisms and has often been linked with cell disorders. In addition, several groups have reported a virtual absence of protein aggregates in healthy cells. In contrast to previous studies and the expected outcome, we observed aggregated proteins in aerobic exponentially growing and "healthy" Escherichia coli cells. We observed overrepresentation of "aberrant proteins," as well as substrates of the major conserved chaperone DnaK (Hsp70) and the protease ClpXP (a serine protease), in the aggregates. In addition, the protein aggregates appeared to interact with chaperones known to be involved in the aggregate repair pathway, including ClpB, GroEL, GroES, and DnaK. Finally, we showed that the levels of reactive oxygen species and unfolded or misfolded proteins determine the levels of protein aggregates. Our results led us to speculate that protein aggregates may function as a temporary "trash organelle" for cellular detoxification.

Abstract

In previous experiments we were able to separate, using a nondestructive separation technique, culturable and nonculturable bacteria, from a Luria-Bertani (LB) medium culture of Escherichia coli incubated for 48 h. We observed in the nonculturable bacterial population an increase in oxidative damage and up-induction of most defenses against reactive oxygen species (ROS), along with a decrease in cytoplasmic superoxide dismutases. In this study, using the same separation technique, we separated into two subpopulations a 10-h LB medium culture containing only culturable bacteria. For the first time, we succeeded in associating physical separation with physiological differences. Although the levels of defense against ROS (RpoS, RpoH, OxyR, and SoxRS regulons) and oxidative damage (carbonyl contents) were apparently the same, we found that bacteria in one subpopulation were more sensitive to LB medium starvation and to various stresses, such as phosphate buffer starvation, heat shock, and hydrogen peroxide exposure. Based on these results, we suggest that these physiological differences reflect uncharacterized bacterial modifications which do not directly involve defenses against ROS.

In Bacillus subtilis, carbon catabolite repression (CCR) of catabolic genes is mediated by ATP-dependent phosphorylation of HPr and Crh. Here we show that the different efficiencies with which these two proteins contribute to CCR may be due to the drastic differences in their synthesis rates under conditions that cause CCR.

Abstract

Two members of the aquaporin family, PM28A and a new one, PM28C, were isolated and shown to be the major constituents of spinach leaf plasma membranes. These two isoforms were identified and characterized by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry. Edman degradation yielded the amino acid sequence of two domains belonging to the new isoform. PM28B, a previously described isoform, was not found in our preparations. Scanning transmission electron microscopy mass analysis revealed both PM28 isoforms to be tetrameric. Two types of particles, a larger and a smaller one, were found by transmission electron microscopy of negatively stained solubilized proteins and by atomic force microscopy of PM28 two-dimensional crystals. The ratio of larger to smaller particles observed by transmission electron microscopy and single particle analysis correlated with the ratio of PM28A to PM28C determined by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-mass spectrometry. The absence of PM28B and the ratio of PM28A to PM28C indicate that these plasma membrane intrinsic proteins are differentially expressed in spinach leaves. These findings suggest that differential expression of the various aquaporin isoforms may regulate the water flux across the plasma membrane, in addition to the known mechanism of regulation by phosphorylation.

Abstract

An atrazine-tolerant mutant and an atrazine-sensitive cultivar of Brassica napus L. were grown under visible radiation (400 mumol m-2 s-1, photosynthetically active radiation, PAR) and then subjected to treatment conditions. These included short-term high PAR (1600 mumol m-2 s-1) which was given for 4 h either alone or in combination with an enhanced level of UV-BBE radiation (4.6 kJ m-2 h-1 biologically effective UV-B, 280-320 nm). Recovery from the radiation treatment was studied for 4 h under the light conditions for growth. Since it is known that the atrazine-tolerant mutant is susceptible to photoinhibition, one of the aims of the present study was to determine the effects of a supplemental, enhanced level of UV-B radiation with regard to the mutant. The results indicate an additive effect of UV-B radiation on Fv/Fm, photochemical yield and photosynthetic oxygen evolution during both exposure and recovery, and also a higher susceptibility of the mutant to photoinhibitory PAR conditions alone and in combination with UV-B, which may have implications in a changing environment. Both cultivars also showed a higher D1 turnover during the radiation stress than during recovery, as shown by immunoblotting and 35S-methionine incorporation measurements.
