Forensic Science is the application of Scientific methods to resolve crime and legal issues. It involves various disciplines, such as Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry and Anthropology. Forensic scientists examine and analyze evidence from crime scenes, such as fingerprints, DNA, blood, or weapons. Digital proof is one of the forms of forensic evidence. It provide real time eye witness of the incident. Video recordings enable investigators to find out what exactly has transpired. Investigators use video evidence as a source for witness statements, and it aids in the search for the missing person or suspect. Video evidence is also used to testify in court and help with investigations and prosecutions. Failure of forensic science results in wrong judgement convicting innocent people and escaping criminals [1]. For most crimes high quality video recordings are often not available. video quality issues such as blurry, speckled, pixelated and low-resolution videos captured at low light are a real challenge in forensic analysis. To address such issues in this research a hybrid model using set of filters including triplemask spatial linear filter, median filter and bilateral filters are used. For denoising images, a novel image filter using sliding window convolution is proposed. For image sharpening a triplemask spatial linear filter is proposed. Triplemask spatial linear filter is created by cascading a series of filters. Identity, shift and fraction-based approach is used in mask processing. For image smoothing and to preserve the edges bilateral filter is used [2]. The performance of convolution operation is compared with distinct convolution, shift rotational convolution and scipy convolution. To handle uncertainty, imprecision, and ambiguity in real-world image data in a precise manner neutrosophic science is used in image analysis. By the generated neutrosophic set of the given input image ambiguous regions in the image are detected. Feature selection is made by calculating the entropy of different image regions. From the generated neutrosophic set entropy the degree of uncertainty, within the input image is quantified. The intensity distributions are measured using entropy values. In feature selection regions with highest and lowest entropy values containing face images are selected, visualized and processed to further aid in forensic analysis in detecting the culprits. Neutrosophic AHP is used for prioritizing criteria based on face detection and indeterminancy. Face detection is performed using single shot detector framework with a resnet base network, trained using caffe deep learning framework. face recognition process is performed using dlibs [9] state-of-the-art face recognition model built with deep learning [10]. Face recognition in this research distance-based similarity measure using neutrosophic sets is performed. These measures are used in conjunction with facenet[59] face recognition algorithm to improve the robustness and accuracy over traditional methods. Background: Emotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) is debilitating psychiatric disorder, particularly common in female and forensic populations. However, appropriate pharmacological treatment to effectively manage symptoms of EUPD remains an unmet clinical need. Dopamine receptor partial agonists (DRPAs), such as aripiprazole, have a favourable tolerability profile and have demonstrated some benefits in targeting symptoms of emotional dysregulation, although, evidence regarding the effects of novel D2/D3 DRPA cariprazine in EUPD patients has been limited. Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of cariprazine for EUPD in a case series of female forensic inpatients where the diagnosis is more prevalent. Methods: Demographic and clinical information of the patients were collected from patient electronic records during their admission in a specialized NHS forensic service. Treatment response was measured using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline, 3 and 6 months and Global Clinical Impression Scale (CGI-scores) at baseline and 6 months. Tolerability and BMI, ECG QTc interval and prolactin levels were recorded prior to initiation and at 6 months. Results: Eight female patients with EUPD (mean age 29.8 years, SD 5.3) were treated with cariprazine (range 3-6mg). Total CGI-scores modestly improved from 5.6 baseline to 5.0 at 6 months. There was a reduction in mean total PANSS scores from baseline to 6 months (92.5, SD 8.1 to 72.4, SD 15.8), general psychopathology (56.1 SD 6.7 to 42.5, SD9.7), positive (21.9 SD 4.6 to 17.1, SD4.8) and negative PANSS scores (14.5 SD 6.3 to 12.8, SD4.6), corresponding to a 21%, 23%, 20% and 3% mean score reduction, respectively. Cariprazine demonstrated a favourable metabolic and hormonal side effect profile with no treatment discontinuation at 6 months follow up. Conclusion: This is the first case series to evaluate the effectiveness of cariprazine in EUPD. Its efficacy in improving PANSS and CGI-S scores was overall modest and highly variable, reflective of an inherently heterogenous and comorbid patient sample but the benefits on treatment perseverance and tolerability were considerable. Cariprazine may be of particular benefit in EUPD where psychotic symptoms are co-morbid, as an augmentation strategy to clozapine, or where previous antipsychotics have caused metabolic or hormonal side effects. Background: The elbow joint formed between the humerus within the arm,and the ulna and radius in the forearm permits the hand to be moved toward and far from the body.While the elbow joint is extended, the arm and forearm are not perfectly aligned,a deviation occurs laterally closer to the long axis of the arm, which is known as the “carrying angle”. Aim and objective: i)To measure the variation of carrying angle between rural and urban region of Haryana population between age group of 12-40 years. ii)To estimate the variation of carrying angle between male and female of age group of 12-40 year population of Haryana. Material and Methods: The present study consists of 230 (one hundred fifteen rural and one hundred fifteen urban subject) asymptomatic,healthy humans from urban and rural areas of the Haryana location within the age group of 12-40 years.Carrying angle was measured by using a physical goniometer made out of flexible clear plastic having each fixed and movable arm. Results: our study observed that mean of the carrying angle is 12.68º±2.14º in adult males and 15.34º±2.17º in females in rural regions. The mean carrying angle is 11.13º±1.89º in adult males and 13.50º±2.24º in females in urban areas respectively. Mean of carrying angle of males & females is larger in rural regions than in urban areas.Differences are statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion carrying angle is larger in male and female of rural region as compared to male and female of urban regions. Knowledge of measuring of the carrying angle and its differences are important even in assessing stressful elbow injuries in adults of rural and urban regions and other elbow deformities that require arthroplasties or reconstruction. The information in the present study may be useful for the evaluation in comparison to pathologic conditions as well as inside the management of disorders of the elbow,and is additionally beneficial as a forensic tool for sex determination. Abnormal shifts in global climate, leading to extreme weather, significantly threaten the safety of individuals involved in outdoor activities. Hypothermia-induced coma or death frequently occurs in clinical and forensic settings. Despite this, the precise mechanism of central nervous system injury due to hypothermia remains unclear, hindering the development of targeted clinical treatments and specific forensic diagnostic indicators. The GEO database was searched to identify datasets related to hypothermia. Post-bioinformatics analyses, DEGs, and ferroptosis-related DEGs (FerrDEGs) were intersected. GSEA was then conducted to elucidate the functions of the Ferr-related genes. Animal experiments conducted in this study demonstrated that hypothermia, compared to the control treatment, can induce significant alterations in iron death-related genes such as PPARG, SCD, ADIPOQ, SAT1, EGR1, and HMOX1 in cerebral cortex nerve cells. These changes lead to iron ion accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and marked expression of iron death-related proteins. The application of the iron death inhibitor Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) effectively modulates the expression of these genes, reduces lipid peroxidation, and improves the expression of iron death-related proteins. Severe hypothermia disrupts the metabolism of cerebral cortex nerve cells, causing significant alterations in ferroptosis-related genes. The environmental contamination by extremophile Aspergillus species, i.e., Aflatoxin B1, is hardly controllable in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, which lack handling resources and controlled storage facilities. Acute aflatoxicosis poisoning from aflatoxin-prone dietary staples could cause acute hepatic necrosis, acute liver failure, and death. Here, as the cheaper, more straightforward, and facile on-site diagnostic kit is needed, we report an ultraviolet-excitable optical aptasensor based on a fluorinated ethylene propylene film strip. Molecular dynamics on the aptamer.AFB1 complex revealed that the AFB1 to the aptamer increases the overall structural stability, suggesting that the aptamer design is suitable for the intended application. Under various influencing factors, the proposed label-free strategy offers a fast 20-min on-site fabrication simplicity and 19-day shelf-life. The one-pot incubation provides an alternative to catalytic detection and exhibited 4 times reusability. The recovery of crude brown sugar, processed peanuts, and long-grain rice were 102.74 ± 0.41 (n = 3), 86.90 ± 3.38 (n = 3), and 98.50 ± 0.42 (n = 3), comparable to High-Performance Liquid Chromatography-Photodiode Array Detector results. This study is novel owing to the peculiar UV-active spectrum fingerprint and the convenient use of hydrophobic film strips that could promote breakthrough innovations and new frontiers for on-site/forensic detection of environmental pollutants. Introduction: Revealing individual characteristics is supportive for identifying individuals in forensic crime. As saliva is one of the most common biological samples used in crime scenes, it is important to make full use of the rich individual information contained in saliva. The aim of this study was to explore the application of the microbiome in forensic science by analysing differences in the salivary microbiome and metabolome of healthy individuals with different dietary habits. Methods: We performed 16S rDNA sequencing analysis based on oral saliva samples collected from 12 vegetarians, 12 seafood omnivores and 12 beef and lamb omnivores. Non-targeted metabolomics analyses were also performed based on saliva samples from healthy individuals. Results: The results showed that the dominant flora of vegetarians was dominated by Neisseria (belonging to the phylum Proteobacteria), while seafood omnivores and beef and lamb omnivores were dominated by Streptococcus (belonging to the phylum Firmicutes). NDMS-based and cluster analyses showed that vegetarian dieters were significantly differentiated from meat dieters (seafood omnivores and beef and lamb omnivores), which may be related to the fact that high-fiber diets can create a different salivary flora structure. Variants were also detected in salivary metabolic pathways, including positive correlations with Lipid metabolism, Amino acid metabolism, Carbohydrate metabolism, and Nucleotide metabolism in vegetarians, and correlations in seafood omnivores. In order to select salivary microorganisms and metabolic markers that can distinguish different dietary profiles, a random forest classifier model was constructed in this study, and the results showed that individuals with different dietary profiles could be successfully distinguished based on the core genera and metabolites such as Streptococcus, Histidinyl-Valine. Conclusion: Our study provides a supportive basis for the application of salivary polyomics in order to reveal the dietary characteristics of individuals for forensic investigation and crime solving. Background: Cardiac injury caused by a sharp object is a medical and surgical therapeutic challenge. Mortality risk factors have been identified but there are major discrepancies in the literature. The aim of this study was to analyse the management of victims of penetrating cardiac injuries before and after admission to hospital and the anatomical characteristics of these injuries in order to facilitate diagnosis of the most critical patients. Methods: To carry out this study, we conducted a retrospective analytical study with epidemiological data on victims of penetrating cardiac injuries. We included two types of patients, with those who underwent autopsy in our institution after death from sharp injury to the heart or great vessels and those who survived with treatment in the emergency department or intensive care unit between January 2015 and February 2022. Results: We included 30 autopsied patients and 12 survivors aged between 18 and 73 years. Higher mortality was associated with prehospital or in-hospital cardiorespiratory arrest (OR = 4, CI [1.71–9.35]), preoperative mechanical ventilation (OR = 10, CI [1.53–65.41]), preoperative catecholamines (OR = 7, CI [1.12–6.29]), preoperative and perioperative adrenaline (OR = 13, CI [1.98–85.46] and [1.98–85.46]), penetrating cardiac injury (OR = 14, CI [2.10–93.22]), multiple cardiac injuries (OR = 1.5, CI [1.05–2.22]) and an Organ Injury Scaling of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST-OIS) score of 5 (OR = 2.9, CI [1.04–8.54]; p = 0.0329) with an AUC-ROC curve value of 0.708 (CI [0.543–0.841]). Conclusions: This study identified risk mortality factors in penetrating cardiac injury patients. These findings can help improve the diagnosis and management of these patients. Estimating the post-mortem interval (PMI) is an essential step in forensic investigations, particularly those involving homicides and unwitnessed deaths. However, traditional methods occasionally yield inconsistent estimates. Histological and molecular techniques are considered crucial in forensic pathology and are frequently employed to estimate the time interval of death. The gingiva is an oral mucosal tissue used to estimate PMI. This review aimed to examine the potential of histological methods to determine PMI using oral mucosal tissue, namely the gingiva, and to investigate changes that occur in oral mucosal tissue at different time intervals when compared with those in normal tissues. The oral mucosa comprises layers of stratified squamous epithelium and connective tissue. Similar to other body tissues, changes are known to occur in the gingiva after death, and these cellular and tissue changes should also be considered. Alterations in the gingiva include homogenisation, karyorrhexis, pyknosis, karyolysis, chromatin clumping, eosinophilia, collagen fibre degradation, and the loss of tissue architecture. Reviews collating the results of original trials have consistently reported how the oral mucosa is altered by autolysis and how such changes can be observed in histological tissue morphology after death. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent impact on psychological work, Division 41 of the American Psychological Association convened a taskforce to provide guidance to its membership regarding the use of technology for practice and research at the intersection of psychology and law. Drawing from existing research in psychology-law and beyond, as well as the first-hand experience of taskforce members, this document outlines foundational guidance to apply technology to forensic and correctional work while acknowledging these settings provide unique challenges to ethical practice. The recommendations provide support for psychologists involved in assessment, treatment, training, and research. However, these recommendations may not exhaustively apply to all areas of psycholegal practice or all forms of technology. Further, these recommendations are intended to be consulted in conjunction with other professional practice guidelines, emerging research, and policy changes that impact the integration of technologies into this work.

Criminal law evolution accentuates the contrast between traditional eyewitness testimonies and precise modern forensics. While testimonies offer depth, scientific methodologies provide unparalleled accuracy in investigations. This study examines the challenges and merits of both in light of technological advancements. The objective is to understand the evolving paradigm of scientific evidence in criminal justice, emphasizing its integration and balance with traditional evidentiary methods for upholding judicial integrity and revealing material truth. The result of this study is historical evolution in the theory of scientific evidence which has transitioned from relying on testimonies to verifiable scientific data, including advancements in DNA and cyber technology. This scientific approach, characterized by its objectivity, replicability, and measurability, offers a robust foundation for discerning truth and justice, surpassing the limitations of mere factual accounts. Modern criminal law’s integration of this evidence signifies a deep-rooted commitment to justice, ensuring verdicts are swift, fair, and grounded in undeniable truth.

Delays in construction projects are common and persistent. Frequent disputes also make work time inefficient and result in significant cost increases. Therefore, it is necessary to study or investigate events that are useful as a solution to delay claims and have the potential to be used in litigation. This research has been conducted to maximize reliable data sources. The Source Validation Protocol guides the process for ensuring the validity of the source data based on the Forensic Schedule Analysis methodology. According to the Critical Path Method (CPM) schedule analysis, the construction time of the Rusunawa Building (Rent Simple Flat) of the Health Polytechnic of the Ministry of Health Yogyakarta is 73.2 weeks or 511 calendar days. The 2 data source validation protocols, including Validation of Baseline Schedule Selection, Validation and Rectification, and Validation of As-Built Schedule Sources, Reconstruction, and Validation, greatly influenced the project delays.

BACKGROUND: The accurate identification of unknown human remains plays a critical role in natural disaster scenarios and medico-legal cases in forensic anthropology and forensic medicine. This study aimed to determine normal reference values for the breadth of the talus bone using ankle radiographs from a Teaching Hospital in Delta State, Nigeria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study retrospectively reviewed 107 digital ankle radiographs from patients aged 20 to 60 years (60 males and 47 females). Ethical clearance was obtained before accessing the digital images archived in a radiological unit of a Hospital in Delta State, Nigeria. The talus breadth was measured using digital calipers and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to compare the means based on gender and age. The association of variables was done using the Pearson’s correlation test. Statistical significance was considered at P < 5%. RESULTS: The mean talus breadth was significantly larger in males (41.76 mm) than in females (38.59 mm). However, the means had no significant association with age. The right talus breadth had a strong positive correlation with the left talus breadth. CONCLUSION: The findings are useful to orthopedic surgeons managing ankle pathologies. In addition, the study reveals the potential use of the talar breadth in sex determination when other methods are inconclusive.

Abstract Background Adverse childhood events (ACEs), psychopathy, and self-harming behaviours are prevalent among individuals in the forensic psychiatry system. While existing literature suggests that ACEs, self-harm, and psychopathy are interrelated, little is known about the interplay of psychopathic traits in this relationship. The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of psychopathy in the relationship between ACEs and self-harming behaviours in forensic patients. Methods This was a retrospective study of patients under the Ontario Review Board (ORB) between 2014 and 2015. In the analysis, we included patients with complete data on ACEs, self-harming behaviours, and a Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) score - a measure of psychopathic traits and their severity conducted during the reporting period. Mediation analysis was based on the Baron and Kenny approach, and sensitivity analysis was performed based on the types of ACEs. Results ​​​The sample population (n = 593) was made up of adults, with a mean age of 41.21 (± 12.35) years and were predominantly males (92.37%). While there was a partial mediating effect of psychopathy on the relationship between ACEs and incidents of self-harming behaviours in the past year, the mediation was complete in the relationship between ACEs and a lifetime history of self-harming behaviours. Following sensitivity analysis based on the types of ACE, the mediating effects were more attributed to specific ACEs, especially having experienced child abuse or having an incarcerated household member before 18 years. Conclusion Among forensic patients in Ontario, psychopathy mediates​ ​the relationship between experiencing ACEs and engaging in self-harming behaviours. Effective intervention to mitigate self-harming behaviours in this population should consider the potential role of psychopathy, especially among individuals who have experienced ACEs involving a history of child abuse and a family who was incarcerated.

Introduction: An autopsy is a valuable tool for finding the cause of death, exploring the clinical diagnosis, documenting unexpected findings, and resolving diagnostic questions. However, this may subject the forensic pathologist and other workers to a wide variety of blood-borne and aerosolized pathogens. Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common cause of illness and death, resulting in infection transmission in the autopsy room. Our objective in this study was to estimate the prevalence of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis among forensic autopsies in a tertiary care hospital in South India. Material and Methods: We identified positive TB cases from acid-fast bacteria staining and culture (Mycobacterium Growth Indicator Tube and Lowenstein–Jensen medium) out of 380 autopsy cases. Results: The prevalence of tuberculosis was 2.4% (n = 9), among which 2.1% of cases were positive for only pulmonary tuberculosis (n = 8), and 0.3% of cases had both pulmonary and extrapulmonary involvement (n = 1). In the bivariate analysis of TB cases, sex, occupation, family history of TB, habit of smoking, BCG vaccine scar, period of hospital stay, and cause of death were potentially significant. Conclusion: The prevalence of TB in forensic autopsy cases were similar to forensic autopsy-based studies, and it was less as compared to the prevalence of TB in the general population.

The use of z-drugs has increased worldwide since its introduction. Although the prescribing patterns of hypnotics differ among countries, zolpidem is the most widely used z-drug in the world. Zolpidem may be involved in poisoning and deaths. A simple and fast HPLC-PDA method was developed and validated. Zolpidem and the internal standard chloramphenicol were extracted from plasma using a sonication-assisted dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction procedure. The method was validated including selectivity, linearity, precision, accuracy, and recovery. The calibration range (0.15–0.6 µg/mL) covers therapeutic and toxic levels of zolpidem in plasma. The limit of quantification was set at 0.15 µg/mL. Intra- and interday accuracy and precision values were lower than 15% at the concentration levels studied. Excellent recovery results were obtained for all concentrations. The proposed method was successfully applied to ten real postmortem plasma samples. In our series, multiple substances (alcohol and/or other drugs) were detected in most cases of death involving zolpidem. Our analytical method is suitable for routine toxicological analysis. The study presents the importance of forensic bacteriology, its use in forensic cases, the methods for bacteriological sampling from corpses, the types and species of bacteria isolated from human and pig corpses, which are most commonly used in forensic biology. The microbial changes that occur after death remain unclear. Postmortem microbiology is a relatively new field of research. After death, the failure of the immune system and other physical barriers leads to the proliferation and spread of microbes. In order for bacteriological information to be accepted within the scope of forensic bacteriology, the court must find suspicion to be present about whether the bacteria seen on the body will contribute to solving the case. Experts must be appointed to examine the issue in line with this suspicion, and these experts must prepare and submit their reports to the court at the requested time. When considering the literature studies, forensic bacteriology has been suggested to be a scientific discipline in the developmental stage and to only be able to provide circumstantial evidence in forensic cases as opposed to primary evidence. According to the literature review, most bacterial studies isolated from corpses were conducted in Romania. Although bacterial samples were isolated from various parts of the corpses, bacteria were mostly isolated from their blood samples. According to literature searches from various scientific journal databases, no study has occurred with a list of the bacteria isolated from corpses. Frequent and excessive consumption of alcohol, be it episodic or sustained misuse, ranks among the top causes of mortality globally. This comprehensive analysis seeks to elucidate how alcohol misuse precipitates death, with a particular focus on associated cardiac anomalies. Notably, the phenomenon of "Holiday Heart Syndrome", linked to binge drinking, is recognized for inducing potentially fatal cardiac arrhythmias. Moreover, persistent alcohol consumption is implicated in the development of alcoholic cardiomyopathy, a condition that underlies heart failure and arrhythmic disturbances of the heart. Additionally, individuals undergoing withdrawal from alcohol frequently exhibit disruptions in normal heart rhythm, posing a risk of death. Neck infections are often prone to being underestimated and can manifest insidiously. The spread of infection can lead to translocation into thoracic areas, causing descending necrotizing mediastinitis (DNM). However, the application of the post-mortem approach in such cases is not well-described in the literature. A literature review was carried out according to the PRISMA methods. Nine papers were included in the final review, revealing different levels of involvement of neck layers that can be linked to different causes. Expertise with respect to the anatomy of the fasciae and spaces of the neck enables an understanding of the pathogenesis of DNM. However, a clear autoptic description was not provided in any of the articles. Therefore, we also employed a practical post-mortem approach to cases of death due to DNM. It is fundamental for pathologists to identify the exact head and neck structures involved. Providing dissectors with support from an otolaryngologist could be useful. Background: Adverse childhood events (ACEs), psychopathy, and self-harming behaviours are prevalent among individuals in the forensic psychiatry system. While existing literature suggests that ACEs, self-harm, and psychopathy are interrelated, little is known about the interplay of psychopathic traits in this relationship. The present study aimed to determine the mediating role of psychopathy in the relationship between ACEs and self-harming behaviours in forensic patients. Methods: This was a retrospective study of patients under the Ontario Review Board (ORB) between 2014 and 2015. In the analysis, we included patients with complete data on ACEs, self-harming behaviours, and a Psychopathy Checklist-Revised (PCL-R) score - a measure of psychopathic traits and their severity conducted during the reporting period. Mediation analysis was based on the Baron and Kenny approach, and sensitivity analysis was performed based on the types of ACEs. Results: ​​​The sample population (n = 593) was made up of adults, with a mean age of 41.21 (± 12.35) years and were predominantly males (92.37%). While there was a partial mediating effect of psychopathy on the relationship between ACEs and incidents of self-harming behaviours in the past year, the mediation was complete in the relationship between ACEs and a lifetime history of self-harming behaviours. Following sensitivity analysis based on the types of ACE, the mediating effects were more attributed to specific ACEs, especially having experienced child abuse or having an incarcerated household member before 18 years. Conclusion: Among forensic patients in Ontario, psychopathy mediates​ ​the relationship between experiencing ACEs and engaging in self-harming behaviours. Effective intervention to mitigate self-harming behaviours in this population should consider the potential role of psychopathy, especially among individuals who have experienced ACEs involving a history of child abuse and a family who was incarcerated. BACKGROUND: The accurate identification of unknown human remains plays a critical role in natural disaster scenarios and medico-legal cases in forensic anthropology and forensic medicine. This study aimed to determine normal reference values for the breadth of the talus bone using ankle radiographs from a Teaching Hospital in Delta State, Nigeria. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study retrospectively reviewed 107 digital ankle radiographs from patients aged 20 to 60 years (60 males and 47 females). Ethical clearance was obtained before accessing the digital images archived in a radiological unit of a Hospital in Delta State, Nigeria. The talus breadth was measured using digital calipers and the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) was used to compare the means based on gender and age. The association of variables was done using the Pearson's correlation test. Statistical significance was considered at P < 5%. RESULTS: The mean talus breadth was significantly larger in males (41.76 mm) than in females (38.59 mm). However, the means had no significant association with age. The right talus breadth had a strong positive correlation with the left talus breadth. CONCLUSION: The findings are useful to orthopedic surgeons managing ankle pathologies. The article examines the peculiarities of hooliganism investigation methods at the current stage of the development of criminology. Based on the study of statistical data, a conclusion was formulated about the effectiveness of modern methods of investigation of this offense, since in recent years there has been a tendency to decrease their number. It has been found that the methodology consists of three components: forensic characteristics, typical investigative situations and investigative versions, the algorithm for conducting investigative investigative actions in one or another situation, and each of them is analyzed in the context of the investigation of hooliganism itself. Attention is drawn to the fact that, from the point of view of criminalistic characteristics, hooliganism is in most cases committed by men, during leisure time without prior preparation through cynical body movements combined with obscene swearing, public exposure of body parts, creating noise and disturbing the peace of citizens. It has been found that the set of actions used at the postal stage of the investigation of hooliganism depends on many factors, which in turn make up investigative situations, which are distinguished by four, which depend on the completion of the act, the arrest of the violator and other circumstances. Each of the investigative situations was analyzed and it was emphasized that the most typical investigative search actions, which are carried out in most cases, are the inspection of the scene of the incident and interrogation, and in some cases, presentation for identification, an investigative experiment, and conducting examinations may be carried out. The study of each of them showed that in the process of investigating hooliganism, each of them has its own characteristics, which are related to the specifics of this offense. In view of the predominant perpetration of hooliganism in the evening and night time, it was concluded that currently, in the conditions of martial law, when the curfew has been introduced, the time during which these acts are most often committed has been reduced, which is one of the reasons for the decrease in their number. On the basis of the conducted research, a conclusion was formulated about the importance of conducting further research into the peculiarities of the investigation of certain categories of criminal offenses. Bile has emerged as an alternative matrix for toxicological investigation of drugs in suspected forensic cases of overdose in adults and intoxications in children. Toxicological investigation consists in screening and, subsequently, confirming the result with specific techniques, such as liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). As there is no screening test on the market to test postmortem bile specimens, the novelty of this study was in investigating the applicability of a chemiluminescence immunoassay, designed for other matrices and available on the market, on bile and validate its use, testing the agreement with LC-MS/MS analysis. Bile specimens were obtained from 25 forensic cases of suspected death from overdose and intoxication. Sample preparation for bile screening consists simply in centrifugation and dilution. Confirmation analysis allows simultaneous identification of 108 drugs and was validated on bile. Kappa analysis assessed a perfect agreement (0.81–1) between the assays for benzodiazepines, methadone, opiates, cocaine, oxycodone, cannabinoids, buprenorphine and pregabalin; a substantial agreement (0.41–0.6) was reported for barbiturates. No agreement was assessed for amphetamines, due to an abundance of putrefactive amines in postmortem specimens. In conclusion, this fast and easy immunoassay could be used for initial screening of bile specimens, identifying presence of drugs, except amphetamines, with reliability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: An autopsy is a valuable tool for finding the cause of death, exploring the clinical diagnosis, documenting unexpected findings, and resolving diagnostic questions. However, this may subject the forensic pathologist and other workers to a wide variety of blood-borne and aerosolized pathogens. Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common cause of illness and death, resulting in infection transmission in the autopsy room. Our objective in this study was to estimate the prevalence of pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis among forensic autopsies in a tertiary care hospital in South India. Material and Methods: We identified positive TB cases from acid-fast bacteria staining and culture (Mycobacterium Growth Indicator Tube and Lowenstein--Jensen medium) out of 380 autopsy cases. Results: The prevalence of tuberculosis was 2.4% (n = 9), among which 2.1% of cases were positive for only pulmonary tuberculosis (n = 8), and 0.3% of cases had both pulmonary and extrapulmonary involvement (n = 1). In the bivariate analysis of TB cases, sex, occupation, family history of TB, habit of smoking, BCG vaccine scar, period of hospital stay, and cause of death were potentially significant. Conclusion: The prevalence of TB in forensic autopsy cases were similar to forensic autopsy-based studies, and it was less as compared to the prevalence of TB in the general population. Introduction: Problem‐solving skills (PSS) help to provide a systematic approach to dealing with and managing complex problems. The overall aim of this study was to assess the acceptability and feasibility of developing and adapting a prison‐based PSS workbook for adults within a medium‐ and low‐secure hospital. Method: We used the Medical Research Council framework in our participatory mixed methods study incorporating an adapted survey (to identify what types of problems people experience in secure hospitals), a series of three interactive workshops (to co‐produce two case study examples for a workbook) and we gathered feedback from patients and hospital staff on the acceptability and feasibility of the workbook. Data from the survey were used to inform the case study examples, and the feedback from patients and hospital staff was descriptively summarised and the results consolidated. Results: In total, 82 (51%) patients took part in the survey; 22 patients and 49 hospital staff provided feedback on the workbook. The survey results indicated that patients regularly experience problems while in the hospital. Patients reported problems relating to restrictions of freedom and boredom. The workshops produced two case studies for the workbooks, with mainly positive patient and staff feedback. More work is required to improve the visual representation of the characters in the case studies, the amount and content of the language and the mechanism of the intervention delivery. Conclusion: The adaptation process proved acceptable and feasible to both patients and staff. The co‐production methodology for the workbook and feedback from patients and staff was an effective way of iteratively refining the materials to ensure that they were both meaningful and acceptable to staff and patients. Subsequent work is required to develop the workbook and evaluate the feasibility of the intervention delivery, recruitment rates, uptake and adherence to the PSS using a randomised controlled trial. IntroductionMultiple linked single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have shown potential in personal identification and mixture detection. However, the limited number of marker and sequencing errors have obstructed accurate DNA typing.MethodsTo develop more candidate loci, the diversity value (D-value) was introduced as a new parameter for screening the novel polymorphic multiple linked-SNP markers, referred to as multi-SNP. In this study, a “FD Multi-SNP Mixture Kit” comprising 567 multi-SNPs was developed for mixture detection. Additionally, a new computational error correction method was applied as a quality control approach for sequencing data.ResultsThe results demonstrated higher typing success rates than the conventional CE typing method. For single-source DNA, approximately 70–80 loci were detected with a DNA input of 0.009765625 ng. More than 65% of the minor alleles were distinguishable at 1 ng DNA with a frequency of 0.5% in 2- to 4-person mixtures.ConclusionThis study offers a polymorphic and high-resolution detection method for DNA genotyping and complex mixture detection, providing an alternative strategy for addressing challenging mixed DNA traces.

BackgroundEmotionally unstable personality disorder (EUPD) is debilitating psychiatric disorder, particularly common in female and forensic populations. However, appropriate pharmacological treatment to effectively manage symptoms of EUPD remains an unmet clinical need. Dopamine receptor partial agonists (DRPAs), such as aripiprazole, have a favourable tolerability profile and have demonstrated some benefits in targeting symptoms of emotional dysregulation, although, evidence regarding the effects of novel D2/D3 DRPA cariprazine in EUPD patients has been limited.ObjectivesTo evaluate the efficacy and tolerability of cariprazine for EUPD in a case series of female forensic inpatients where the diagnosis is more prevalent.MethodsDemographic and clinical information of the patients were collected from patient electronic records during their admission in a specialized NHS forensic service. Treatment response was measured using the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) at baseline, 3 and 6 months and Global Clinical Impression Scale (CGI-scores) at baseline and 6 months. Tolerability and BMI, ECG QTc interval and prolactin levels were recorded prior to initiation and at 6 months.ResultsEight female patients with EUPD (mean age 29.8 years, SD 5.3) were treated with cariprazine (range 3–6mg). Total CGI-scores modestly improved from 5.6 baseline to 5.0 at 6 months. There was a reduction in mean total PANSS scores from baseline to 6 months (92.5, SD 8.1 to 72.4, SD 15.8), general psychopathology (56.1 SD 6.7 to 42.5, SD9.7), positive (21.9 SD 4.6 to 17.1, SD4.8) and negative PANSS scores (14.5 SD 6.3 to 12.8, SD4.6), corresponding to a 21%, 23%, 20% and 3% mean score reduction, respectively. Cariprazine demonstrated a favourable metabolic and hormonal side effect profile with no treatment discontinuation at 6 months follow up.ConclusionThis is the first case series to evaluate the effectiveness of cariprazine in EUPD. Its efficacy in improving PANSS and CGI-S scores was overall modest and highly variable, reflective of an inherently heterogenous and comorbid patient sample but the benefits on treatment perseverance and tolerability were considerable. Cariprazine may be of particular benefit in EUPD where psychotic symptoms are co-morbid, as an augmentation strategy to clozapine, or where previous antipsychotics have caused metabolic or hormonal side effects.

Abstract Introduction People with severe mental illness have physical comorbidities which result in significant reductions in quality of life and premature mortality. Effective interventions are required that are suitable for people in secure forensic mental health services. We conducted pilot work of a multidisciplinary weight management intervention (Motiv8) which showed improvements in physical and mental health and high levels of satisfaction. We aim to test the feasibility of Motiv8 under cluster randomised conditions, with an aim to investigate the acceptability, feasibility and potential effectiveness of this intervention to supplement standard secure care. Methods and analysis A randomised waitlist-controlled feasibility trial of a lifestyle intervention (Motiv8) + TAU compared with TAU (+ Motiv8 waitlist) for adults on secure mental health units will be conducted. Thirty-two people (4 cohorts) will be recruited from secure services in Greater Manchester Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust. Participants will be randomly allocated to Motiv8 or TAU + Motiv8 waitlist. All participants will receive Motiv8 during the trial. Assessor-blinded physical/mental health and lifestyle assessments will be conducted at baseline, 10 weeks (post-intervention/waitlist), and after 12 weeks (post-waitlist intervention/follow-up). Motiv8 is a multidisciplinary intervention including exercise sessions, cooking/nutrition classes, physical health education, psychology sessions, sleep hygiene, peer support and medication review by pharmacy. A nested qualitative study will be conducted with a subsample of participants (n = 10) to explore their experiences of taking part. The analysis will focus on feasibility outcomes and tabulated success indicators of the study (e.g. Recruitment rates, retention rates, follow-up retention and response rates, attendance at sessions, the experience of involvement in the trial and delivery of the intervention, assessment of safety, development of a manualised intervention). Thematic analysis will be conducted through qualitative interviews. The analysis will aim to inform the development of a definitive trial. Ethics and dissemination The trial has been granted ethical approval from the NHS Health Research Authority and adopted onto the UK Clinical Research Network Portfolio. Background: The mastoid process can be utilized in forensic identification due to its resistance to alterations and population variations in its morphology. The study investigated the role of mastoid parameters in the determination of sex in a Nigerian population. Aims and Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the gender differences in measurements of the mastoid process. Furthermore, the study aimed at assessing the percentage accuracy of using the mastoid variables in sex discrimination. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study used computed tomographic images of the brain, stored in the radiology unit of a referral hospital in Delta State, Nigeria. Permission was granted by the hospital's Ethics Board. The measurements of the mastoid process were taken on images of 310 patients (170 males and 140 females) aged 20–80 years. Data were summarized using means and standard deviations. Gender, side, and age group comparisons were assessed using the independent t-test, paired t-test, and analysis of variance, respectively. Smart biocompatible materials that respond to a variety of external stimuli have a lot of potential in the creation of low-cost diagnostic biosensors. The present work describes the creation of core–shell nanoparticles as a biosensor for smart enzyme detection of salivary alpha-amylase (sAA). A chitosan-tripolyphosphate core was generated via ionic gelation and was coated with a starch–iodine shell to create biocompatible core–shell nanoparticles. The starch–iodine shell was ruptured in the presence of certain amounts of amylase, exposing the core. This application explains a noticeable color change from blue to white that can be used to identify sAA at the point of care. Synthesized nanoparticles were examined for scanning electron microscopy analysis and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX). An EDX report reveals that the nanoparticles have higher carbon content at 55% followed by an oxygen atom of 35%. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopic analysis revealed that the core–shell nanoparticles have carbonyl (C═O) functional groups present. A confirmatory test of amylase reaction on nanoparticle-impregnated paper turns blue to white indicating that the nanoparticle reacts with amylase as an indicator. This paper-based method can be used in future applications in forensic and medical applications.

Abstract Background The ears have increasingly been recognized as one of the supportive tools in forensics, based on the identification of landmark variations of ear biometrics in living persons. However, no studies on the reliability of such comparisons have been done on the deceased. Methods The study aimed to investigate the correlation between ear biometrics and the age, sex, and stature of the deceased. The study was conducted on 181 deceased persons, aged between 18 and 70 years old on cases received by the Forensic Unit of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre. Documentation of age, sex, race, and height was recorded, and photographs of bilateral ears were taken. Measurements of twelve ear biometrics based on the Iannarelli method and ear length and ear width were taken from the photographs. Results Results showed that there was a significant difference between males and females in six ear biometrics. There was also a significant correlation between ear biometrics, that is, ear length and ear width with the age and height of an individual. Conclusions In brief, there exists a significant difference between males and females in ear biometrics with good correlations between ear biometrics and the height and age of an individual. Hence, the ear can be used for personal identification in the forensic field.

Abstract Background Forensic diatomology is a rapidly progressing domain that involves the examination of microscopic algae known as diatoms for forensic purposes. Diatoms are microscopic, single-celled, eukaryotic algae that exist in diverse aquatic environments such as rivers, lakes, ponds, and oceans. They are characterized by their rigid cell wall made up of silica, which is a unique morphological character, making them useful for forensic investigations. Main body Diatoms are a type of unicellular microscopic algae that belong to the class Bacillariophyta. They are one of the most common phytoplankton found in all aquatic environments, including marine and freshwater habitats. Diatoms have proven to be valuable evidence in various forensic investigations, particularly in cases involving drowning or bodies recovered from aquatic environments. Conclusion This comprehensive review provides an in-depth analysis of the principles, methodologies, applications, and challenges associated with the field of forensic diatomology. It emphasizes the importance of diatoms as trace evidence and discusses their potential to establish critical associations between the victim and the surroundings. This review also explores some recent advancements in diatom analysis techniques, including molecular approaches and automated identification methods. Finally, the paper outlines future directions for research and underlines the necessity for standardized protocols and interdisciplinary collaborations to enhance the reliability and validity of forensic diatomology.

Furthermore, the review highlights 58 potential areas for future research, aiding scholars in identifying critical gaps in the field of forensic accounting.

Mobile forensics, particularly in the Android ecosystem, is a rapidly evolving field that demands continuous advancements to address the growing complexity and diversity of mobile devices. This article emphasizes the importance of developing techniques for digitally analyzing Android smartphones, which dominate the smartphone market. The primary objective of this research is to contribute to the development of effective forensic investigation strategies tailored specifically for Android mobile devices, providing insights into the tools and methods used for this purpose. The objective of this study is to improve the precision and effectiveness of forensic examinations pertaining to Android mobile phones. It discusses the fundamental functionality of mobile devices as a source of digital evidence and provides an overview of tools and methodologies for collecting and analyzing such evidence. The importance of comprehending the hardware and software architecture of Android handsets in order to choose the right forensic tools is also highlighted in the article. Furthermore, it proposes future enhancements for Andriller, a popular digital forensic tool, to improve its effectiveness in Android forensic investigations. These enhancements include advancements in data extraction techniques, compatibility with new Android versions, support for additional data types, integration with advanced analysis methods, and addressing identified limitations. This review article focuses on the potential impact of AI in toxicology and its applications in different areas, such as predictive toxicology, development of toxicity screening assays, assessment of chemical mixtures, interpretation of toxicological data, and forensic toxicology. Methods: This review was done a comprehensive literature search across multiple scientific databases. Searches were conducted in Medline/PubMed, Google Scholar and Web of Science to identify relevant publications. The search terms used included combinations of "artificial intelligence", "toxicology", "toxicity", and related keywords. The final set of articles selected provided a comprehensive overview of the current state of research on the applications of AI techniques in toxicology and chemical risk assessment. Results: The review highlighted a growing body of research exploring the potential role of AI in accelerating and enhancing various aspects of toxicity assessment and chemical risk evaluation. The reviewed studies demonstrate how AI models can be trained on large datasets of chemical structures, in vitro assay results, and toxicological outcomes to predict the toxicity of novel compounds and other fields such as forensic toxicology. On the other hand, legal and ethical aspects of using AI was investigated. In this work, we present a compact LIBS sensor developed for characterization of samples on a crime scene following requirements of law enforcement agencies involved in the project. The sensor operates both in a tabletop mode, for aside measurements of swabbed materials or taken fragments, and in handheld mode where the sensor head is pointed directly on targets at the scene. The sensor head is connected via an umbilical to an instrument box that could be battery-powered and contains also a color camera for sample visualization, illumination LEDs, and pointing system for placing the target in focus. Here we describe the sensor's architecture and functionalities, the optimization of the acquisition parameters, and the results of some LIBS measurements. On nano-plotted traces at silica wafer and in optimized conditions, for most of the elements the detection limits, in term of the absolute element masses, were found to be below 10 picograms. We also show results obtained on some representative materials, like fingerprints, swabbed soil and gunshot residue, varnishes on metal, and coated plastics. The last, solid samples were used to evaluate the depth profiling capabilities of the instrument, where the recognition of all four car paint layers was achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The presence of background DNA (bgDNA) can hinder the evaluation of DNA evidence at the activity level, especially when the suspect is expected to be retrieved due to their habitual occupation of the investigated environment. Based on real-life casework circumstances, this study investigates the prevalence, composition, origin, and probable transfer routes of bgDNA found on personal items in situations where their owner and person of interest (POI) share the same workspace. Baseline values of bgDNA were evaluated on the participants' personal items. Secondary and higher degree transfer scenarios of non-self DNA deposition were also investigated. The DNA from co-workers and co-inhabiting partners can be recovered from an individual's personal belongings. Non-self DNA present on the hands and deposited on a sterile surface can generate uninformative profiles. The accumulation of foreign DNA on surfaces over time appears to be crucial for the recovery of comparable profiles, resulting in detectable further transfer onto other surfaces. For a thorough evaluation of touch DNA traces at the activity level, it is necessary to collect information not only about DNA transfer probabilities but also about the presence of the POI as part of the 'baseline' bgDNA of the substrates involved. Blood is one of the most commonly found biological fluids at crime scenes, with the detection and identification of blood holding a high degree of evidential value. It can provide not only information about the nature of the crime but can also lead to identification via DNA profiling. Presumptive tests for blood are usually sensitive but not specific, so small amounts of the substrate can be detected, but false-positive results are often encountered, which can be misleading. Novel methods for the detection of red blood cells based on aptamer–target interactions may be able to overcome these issues. Aptamers are single-stranded DNA or RNA sequences capable of undergoing selective antigen association due to three-dimensional structure formation. The use of aptamers as a target-specific moiety poses several advantages and has the potential to replace antibodies within immunoassays. Aptamers are cheaper to produce, display no batch-to-batch variation and can allow for a wide range of chemical modifications. They can help limit cross-reactivity, which is a hindrance to current forensic testing methods. Within this study, a modified Systematic Evolution of Ligands by Exponential Enrichment (SELEX) process was used to generate aptamers against whole red blood cells. Obtained aptamer pools were analysed via massively parallel sequencing to identify viable sequences that demonstrate a high affinity for the target. Using bioinformatics platforms, aptamer candidates were identified via their enrichment profiles. Binding characterisation was also conducted on two selected aptamer candidates via fluorescent microscopy and qPCR to visualise and quantify aptamer binding. The potential for these aptamers is broad as they can be utilised within a range of bioassays for not only forensic applications but also other analytical science and medical applications. Driven by the rapid escalation of its utilization, as well as ramping commercialization, Internet of Things (IoT) devices increasingly face security threats. Apart from denial of service, privacy, and safety concerns, compromised devices can be used as enablers for committing a variety of crime and e-crime. Despite ongoing research and study, there remains a significant gap in the thorough analysis of security challenges, feasible solutions, and open secure problems for IoT. To bridge this gap, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in IoT security with a critical investigation-based approach. This includes a detailed analysis of vulnerabilities in IoT-based systems and potential attacks. We present a holistic review of the security properties required to be adopted by IoT devices, applications, and services to mitigate IoT vulnerabilities and, thus, successful attacks. Moreover, we identify challenges to the design of security protocols for IoT systems in which constituent devices vary markedly in capability (such as storage, computation speed, hardware architecture, and communication interfaces). Next, we review existing research and feasible solutions for IoT security. We highlight a set of open problems not yet addressed among existing security solutions. We provide a set of new perspectives for future research on such issues including secure service discovery, on-device credential security, and network anomaly detection. We also provide directions for designing a forensic investigation framework for IoT infrastructures to inspect relevant criminal cases, execute a cyber forensic process, and determine the facts about a given incident. This framework offers a means to better capture information on successful attacks as part of a feedback mechanism to thwart future vulnerabilities and threats. Introduction: The impact of COVID-19 pandemic on forensic service practice remains matter of debate. Increased rates of anxiety, depression, and exacerbation of psychotic symptoms were reported in the early phases of the pandemic among detained persons. However, longitudinal analyses in medium-security hospitals taking into account the whole pandemic period led to mitigated results. Methods: This report examines the evolution of the type (voluntary versus involuntary) and reason of admissions, length of stay, history of outpatient care, short-term seclusion hours for aggressive behaviors, and clinical diagnoses for detainees needing acute psychiatric care during the COVID-19 pandemic in the sole secure ward located in the central prison of Geneva, Switzerland. To determine the general trend of the processes over time we applied a combination of process analysis with run chart plotting, and fractional polynomial regression. Results: Run tests showed that the proportion of cases with personality disorders, substance use disorders (SUD), and previous outpatient care tended to increase during the COVID pandemic with subsequent decrease to reach the pre-COVID values. This was also the case for depressive symptoms as reason for admission. The proportion of involuntary admission showed a steady increase both during the COVID and post-COVID time periods. In contrast, short-term seclusion hours decreased during the COVID pandemic followed by a return to their pre-COVID values. Regression models revealed that the COVID pandemic was associated with a significant increase in the rates of inmates with personality disorders and SUD admitted for forensic care explaining 36 and 41% of their variance. Discussion: These data support the idea that, in terms of acute care needs, the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with increased needs for acute forensic care that concerned detainees with personality disorders characterized by increased levels of impulsiveness, decreased tolerance to frustrations, loss of control, increased extraversion and frequent SUD comorbidity. Background: The ears have increasingly been recognized as one of the supportive tools in forensics, based on the identification of landmark variations of ear biometrics in living persons. However, no studies on the reliability of such comparisons have been done on the deceased. Methods: The study aimed to investigate the correlation between ear biometrics and the age, sex, and stature of the deceased. The study was conducted on 181 deceased persons, aged between 18 and 70 years old on cases received by the Forensic Unit of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre. Documentation of age, sex, race, and height was recorded, and photographs of bilateral ears were taken. Measurements of twelve ear biometrics based on the Iannarelli method and ear length and ear width were taken from the photographs. Results: Results showed that there was a significant difference between males and females in six ear biometrics. There was also a significant correlation between ear biometrics, that is, ear length and ear width with the age and height of an individual. Conclusions: In brief, there exists a significant difference between males and females in ear biometrics with good correlations between ear biometrics and the height and age of an individual.
