We report the experimental observation of a square crystalline phase in a vibrated binary mixture of spherical grains. This structure spontaneously forms from a disordered state, consistently with predictions obtained in an equilibrium system with similar geometrical properties under conservative dynamics. By varying the area fraction, we also observe stable coexistence between a granular fluid and an isolated square crystal. Using realistic simulations based on the discrete element method and an idealized collisional model integrated via event-driven molecular dynamics, we not only reproduce experimental results but also help to gain further insights into the non-equilibrium phase coexistence. Through the direct phase coexistence method, we demonstrate that the system shows behavior highly similar to an equilibrium first-order phase transition. However, the crystal remains at a higher granular temperature than the fluid, which is a striking non-equilibrium effect. Through qualitative argument and supported by kinetic theory, we elucidate the role of the coupling between local structure and energy transfer mechanisms in sustaining kinetic temperature gradients across the fluid-solid interface., Comment: 15 pages, 14 figures

Absorbing phase transitions (APTs) are widespread in non-equilibrium systems, spanning condensed matter, epidemics, earthquakes, ecology, and chemical reactions. APTs feature an absorbing state in which the system becomes entrapped, along with a transition, either continuous or discontinuous, to an active state. Understanding which physical mechanisms determine the order of these transitions represents a challenging open problem in non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. Here, by numerical simulations and mean-field analysis, we show that a quasi-2d vibrofluidized granular system exhibits a novel form of APT. The absorbing phase is observed in the horizontal dynamics below a critical packing fraction, and can be continuous or discontinuous based on the emergent degree of synchronization in the vertical motion. Our results provide a direct representation of a feasible experimental scenario, showcasing a surprising interplay between dynamic phase transition and synchronization., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We show that memory can be encoded in a model amorphous solid subjected to athermal oscillatory shear deformations, and in an analogous spin model with disordered interactions, sharing the feature of a deformable energy landscape. When these systems are subjected to oscillatory shear deformation, they retain memory of the deformation amplitude imposed in the training phase, when the amplitude is below a "localization" threshold. Remarkably, multiple, persistent, memories can be stored using such an athermal, noise-free, protocol. The possibility of such memory is shown to be linked to the presence of plastic deformations and associated limit cycles traversed by the system, which exhibit avalanche statistics also seen in related contexts., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The role of sound in the dynamics of mesoscale systems is typically neglected, since frequently the associated time scales are much smaller than all the other time scales of interest. However, for sufficiently small objects embedded in a solvent with a sufficiently small sound velocity, sound can play a crucial role. In particular, behavior resembling viscoelasticity has been theoretically predicted for non-viscoelastic fluids. This effect is due to the interference of the propagation of sound waves caused by the solute particle's motion and hydrodynamic vortex formation. We demonstrate this effect, known as backtracking, in computer simulations employing the method of multiparticle collision dynamics. We systematically study the influence of sound on the dynamics of the solute particle, and find that it disappears in the long-time limit. The fluctuation theorem is a pivotal result of statistical physics. It quantifies the probability of observing fluctuations which are in violation of the second law of thermodynamics. More specifically, it quantifies the ratio of the probabilities of observing entropy-producing and entropy-consuming fluctuations measured over a finite volume and time span in terms of the rate of entropy production in the system, the measurement volume and time. We study the fluctuation theorem in computer simulations of planar shear flow. The simulations are performed employing the method of multiparticle collision dynamics which captures both thermal fluctuations and hydrodynamic interactions. The main outcome of our analysis is that the fluctuation theorem is verified at any averaging time provided that the measurement volume exhibits a specific dependence on a hydrodynamic time scale., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, to appear on Physical Review Letters

Diffusion-limited reactions (DLR) are usually described within the Smoluchowski theory, which neglects interactions between the diffusing components. We propose a first extension of such frame- work that incorporates excluded-volume effects, considering hard diffusing agents in the presence of an absorbing sink. For large values of the absorber-to-diffuser size ratio Rs, the encounter rate obtained from the simulations is in very good agreement with a simple generalization of the Smolu- chowski equation at high densities. Reducing Rs, the rate gets substantially depressed at interme- diate packing and become even non-monotonic for Rs << 1. Concurrently with the saturation of the rate, stationary density waves set in close to the absorbing center. A mean-field, effective-potential analysis of the Smoluchowski equation under crowding sheds light on the subtle link between such ordering and the slowing down of the encounter dynamics. Small-angle neutron scattering experiments and molecular dynamics simulations combined with an application of concepts from soft matter physics to complex protein mixtures provide new insight into the stability of eye lens protein mixtures. Exploring this colloid-protein analogy we demonstrate that weak attractions between unlike proteins help to maintain lens transparency in an extremely sensitive and non-monotonic manner. These results not only represent an important step towards a better understanding of protein condensation diseases such as cataract formation, but provide general guidelines for tuning the stability of colloid mixtures, a topic relevant for soft matter physics and industrial applications., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. We study the statistical properties of the potential energy landscape of a system of particles interacting via a very short-range square-well potential (of depth $-u_0$), as a function of the range of attraction $\Delta$ to provide thermodynamic insights of the Noro and Frenkel [ M.G. Noro and D. Frenkel, J.Chem.Phys. {\bf 113}, 2941 (2000)] scaling. We exactly evaluate the basin free energy and show that it can be separated into a {\it vibrational} ($\Delta$-dependent) and a {\it floppy} ($\Delta$-independent) component. We also show that the partition function is a function of $\Delta e^{\beta u_o}$, explaining the equivalence of the thermodynamics for systems characterized by the same second virial coefficient. We numerically calculate the configurational entropy S_conf of a binary mixture of hard spheres, by using a perturbed Hamiltonian method trapping the system inside a given state, which requires less assumptions than the previous methods [R.J. Speedy, Mol. Phys. 95, 169 (1998)]. We find that S_conf is a decreasing function of packing fraction f and extrapolates to zero at the Kauzmann packing fraction f_K = 0.62, suggesting the possibility of an ideal glass-transition for hard spheres system. We numerically investigate the competition between phase separation and dynamical arrest in a colloidal system interacting via a short ranged attractive potential. Equilibrium fluid configurations are quenched at two different temperatures below the critical temperature and followed during their time evolution. At the lowest studied $T$, the phase separation process is interrupted by the formation of an attractive glass in the dense phase. At the higher $T$, no arrest is observed and the phase separation process proceeds endless in the simulated time window. The final structure of the glass retains memory of the interrupted phase separation process in the form of a frozen spinodal decomposition peak, whose location and amplitude is controlled by the average packing fraction. We also discuss the time evolution of the non ergodicity parameter, providing evidence of a progressively decreasing localization length on increasing the packing fraction. Simulations and Mode-Coupling Theory calculations, for a large range of the arm number $f$ and packing fraction $\eta$ have shown that the structural arrest and the dynamics of star polymers in a good solvent are extremely rich: the systems show a reentrant melting of the disordered glass nested between two stable fluid phases that strongly resemble the equilibrium phase diagram. Starting from a simple model potential we investigate the effect of the interplay between attractive interactions of different range and ultrasoft core repulsion, on the dynamics and on the occurrence of the ideal glass transition line. In the two cases considered so far, we observed some significant differences with respect to the purely repulsive pair interaction. We also discuss the interplay between equilibrium and non equilibrium phase behavior. We numerically study the dependence of the dynamics on the range of interaction $\Delta$ for the short-range square well potential. We find that, for small $\Delta$, dynamics scale exactly in the same way as thermodynamics, both for Newtonian and Brownian microscopic dynamics. For interaction ranges from a few percent down to the Baxter limit, the relative location of the attractive glass line and the liquid-gas line does not depend on $\Delta$. This proves that in this class of potentials, disordered arrested states (gels) can be generated only as a result of a kinetically arrested phase separation., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

We study the aging dynamics in a model for dense simple liquids, in which particles interact through a hard-core repulsion complemented by a short-ranged attractive potential, of the kind found in colloidal suspensions. In this system, at large packing fractions, kinetically arrested disordered states can be created both on cooling (attractive glass) and on heating (repulsive glass). The possibility of having two distinct glasses, at the same packing fraction, with two different dynamics offers the unique possibility of comparing -- within the same model -- the differences in aging dynamics. We find that, while the aging dynamics of the repulsive glass is similar to the one observed in atomic and molecular systems, the aging dynamics of the attractive glass shows novel unexpected features., Comment: 8 pages, 11 figures, submited to Journal of Chemical Physics

Molecular-dynamics simulations are presented for two correlation functions formed with the partial density fluctuations of binary hard-sphere mixtures in order to explore the effects of mixing on the evolution of glassy dynamics upon compressing the liquid into high-density states. Partial-density-fluctuation correlation functions for the two species are reported. Results for the alpha-relaxation process are quantified by parameters for the strength, the stretching, and the time scale, where the latter varies over almost four orders of magnitude upon compression. The parameters exhibit an appreciable dependence on the wave vector; and this dependence is different for the correlation function referring to the smaller and that for the larger species. These features are shown to be in semi-quantitative agreement with those calculated within the mode-coupling theory for ideal liquid-glass transitions., Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures, RevTeX

The dynamics of star polymers has been investigated via extensive Molecular- and Brownian Dynamics simulations for a large range of functionality $f$ and packing fraction $\eta$. The calculated isodiffusivity curves display both minima and maxima as a function of $\eta$ and minima as a function of $f$. Simulation results are compared with theoretical predictions based on different approximations for the structure factor. In particular, the ideal glass transition line predicted by mode-coupling theory is shown to exactly track the isodiffusivity curves, offering a theoretical understanding for the observation of disordered arrested states in star polymer solutions., Comment: 4 pages, Revtex, to be published in PRL

We report extensive molecular-dynamics simulation results for binary mixtures of hard spheres for different size disparities and different mixing percentages,for packing fractions up to 0.605 and over a characteristic time interval spanning up to five orders in magnitude. We explore the changes in the evolution of glassy dynamics due to mixing and discover two opposite scenarios: for large size disparity, increasing the mixing percentage of small particles leads to a speed-up of long-time dynamics, while small disparity leads to a slowing down. Previous theoretical, along with early simulation and experimental, studies have indicated that particles with a short-ranged attraction exhibit a range of new dynamical arrest phenomena. These include very pronounced reentrance in the dynamical arrest curve, a logarithmic singularity in the density correlation functions, and the existence of `attractive' and `repulsive' glasses. Here we carry out extensive molecular dynamics calculations on dense systems interacting via a square-well potential. This is one of the simplest systems with the required properties, and may be regarded as canonical for interpreting the phase diagram, and now also the dynamical arrest. We confirm the theoretical predictions for re-entrance, logarithmic singularity, and give the first direct evidence of the coexistence, independent of theory, of the two coexisting glasses. We write equations of motion for density variables that are equivalent to Newtons equations. We then propose a set of trial equations parameterised by two unknown functions to describe the exact equations. These are chosen to best fit the exact Newtonian equations. Following established ideas, we choose to separate these trial functions into a set representing integrable motions of density waves, and a set containing all effects of non-integrability. It transpires that the static structure factor is fixed by this minimum condition to be the solution of the Yvon-Born-Green (YBG) equation. The residual interactions between density waves are explicitly isolated in their Newtonian representation and expanded by choosing the dominant objects in the phase space of the system, that can be represented by a dissipative term with memory and a random noise. This provides a mapping between deterministic and stochastic dynamics. Imposing the Fluctuation-Dissipation Theorem (FDT) allows us to calculate the memory kernel. We write exactly the expression for it, following two different routes, i.e. using explicitly Newtons equations, or instead, their implicit form, that must be projected onto density pairs, as in the development of the well-established Mode Coupling Theory (MCT). We compare these two ways of proceeding, showing the necessity to enforce a new equation of constraint for the two schemes to be consistent. Thus, while in the first `Newtonian' representation a simple gaussian approximation for the random process leads easily to the Mean Spherical Approximation (MSA) for the statics and to MCT for the dynamics of the system, in the second case higher levels of approximation are required to have a fully consistent theory.

Extensive molecular dynamics simulation studies of particles interacting via a short ranged attractive square-well (SW) potential are reported. The calculated loci of constant diffusion coefficient $D$ in the temperature-packing fraction plane show a re-entrant behavior, i.e. an increase of diffusivity on cooling, confirming an important part of the high volume-fraction dynamical-arrest scenario earlier predicted by theory for particles with short ranged potentials. The more efficient localization mechanism induced by the short range bonding provides, on average, additional free volume as compared to the hard-sphere case and results in faster dynamics., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Within the framework of the mode-coupling theory of super-cooled liquids, we investigate new phenomena in colloidal systems on approach to their glass transitions. When the inter-particle potential contains an attractive part, besides the usual repulsive hard core, two intersecting liquid-glass transition lines appear, one of which extends to low densities, while the other one, at high densities, shows a re-entrant behaviour. In the glassy region a new type of transition appears between two different types of glasses. The complex phenomenology can be described in terms of higher order glass transition singularities. The various glass phases are characterised by means of their viscoelastic properties. The glass driven by attractions has been associated to particle gels, and the other glass is the well known repulsive colloidal glass. These correspondences, in associations with the new predictions of glassy behaviour mean that such phenomena may be expected in colloidal systems with, for example, strong depletion or other short-ranged attractive potentials., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

We discuss the situation where attractive and repulsive portions of the inter-particle potential both contribute significantly to glass formation. We introduce the square-well potential as prototypical model for this situation, and {\it reject} the Baxter as a useful model for comparison to experiment on glasses, based on our treatment within mode coupling theory. We present explicit results for various well-widths, and show that, for narrow wells, there is a useful analytical formula that would be suitable for experimentalist working in the field of colloidal science. We raise the question as to whether, in a more exact treatment, the sticky sphere limit might have an infinite glass transition temperature, or a high but finite one., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

The equations of motion for the density modes of a fluid, derived from Newton's equations, are written as a linear generalized Langevin equation. The constraint imposed by the fluctuation-dissipation theorem is used to derive an exact form for the memory function. The resulting equations, solved under the assumption that the noise, and consequently density fluctuations, of the liquid are gaussian distributed, are equivalent to the random-phase-approximation for the static structure factor and to the well known ideal mode coupling theory (MCT) equations for the dynamics. We review the nature of glass transitions and the glasses arising from a square-well potential with a narrow and deep well. Our discussion is based on the Mode Coupling Theory, and the predictions of glasses that we make refer to the `ideal' glasses predicted by that theory. We believe that the square well system well represents colloidal particles with attractive interactions produced by grafted polymers, or depletion interactions. It has been recently shown that two types of glass, an attractive and a repulsive one, are predicted by MCT for this model. The former can form at quite low densities. Most of our attention is directed at the mechanical properties of the glasses predicted by this theory. In particular we calculate the elastic shear modulus at zero frequency and the longitudinal stress modulus in the long wavelength limit. The transition from a liquid to a glass in colloidal suspensions of particles interacting through a hard core plus an attractive square-well potential is studied within the mode-coupling-theory framework. When the width of the attractive potential is much shorter than the hard-core diameter, a reentrant behavior of the liquid-glass line, and a glass-glass-transition line are found in the temperature-density plane of the model. For small well-width values, the glass-glass-transition line terminates in a third order bifurcation point, i.e. in a A_3 (cusp) singularity. On increasing the square-well width, the glass-glass line disappears, giving rise to a fourth order A_4 (swallow-tail) singularity at a critical well width. Close to the A_3 and A_4 singularities the decay of the density correlators shows stretching of huge dynamical windows, in particular logarithmic time dependence., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures, Phys. Colloidal systems (and protein solutions) are often characterized by attractive interactions whose ranges are much smaller than the particle size. When this is the case and the interaction is spherical, systems obey a generalized law of correspondent states (GLCS), first proposed by Noro and Frenkel (Noro, M. G.; Frenkel, D. J. Chem. Phys. 2000, 113, 2941). The thermodynamic properties become insensitive to the details of the potential, depending only on the value of the second virial coefficient B2 and the density rho. The GLCS does not generically hold for the case of nonspherical potentials. In this Letter, we suggest that when particles interact via short-ranged small-angular amplitude patchy interactions (so that the condition of only one bond per patch is fulfilled), it is still possible to generalize the GLCS close to the liquid-gas critical point.
