In this paper, we prove the identity $\dim_{\textrm H}(F)=d\cdot \dim_{\textrm H}(\alpha^{-1}(F))$, where $\dim_{\textrm H}$ denotes Hausdorff dimension, $F\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$, and $\alpha:[0,1]\to [0,1]^d$ is a function whose constructive definition is addressed from the viewpoint of the powerful concept of a fractal structure. Such a result stands particularly from some other results stated in a more general setting. Thus, Hausdorff dimension of higher dimensional subsets can be calculated from Hausdorff dimension of $1-$dimensional subsets of $[0,1]$. As a consequence, Hausdorff dimension becomes available to deal with the effective calculation of the fractal dimension in applications by applying a procedure contributed by the authors in previous works. It is also worth pointing out that our results generalize both Skubalska-Rafaj\l{}owicz and Garc\'{\i}a-Mora-Redtwitz theorems., Comment: 20 pages, 3 figures

In this paper, we characterize a novel separation property for IFS-attractors on complete metric spaces. Such a separation property is weaker than the strong open set condition (SOSC) and becomes necessary to reach the equality between the similarity and the Hausdorff dimensions of strict self-similar sets. We also investigate the size of the overlaps from the viewpoint of that separation property. In addition, we contribute some equivalent conditions to reach the equality between the similarity dimension and a new Hausdorff type dimension for IFS-attractors introduced by the authors in terms of finite coverings., Comment: 15 pages

In this paper, three approaches to calculate the self-similarity exponent of a time series are compared in order to determine which one performs best to identify the transition from random efficient market behavior (EM) to herding behavior (HB) and hence, to find out the beginning of a market bubble. In particular, classical Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA), Generalized Hurst Exponent (GHE) and GM2 (one of Geometric Method-based algorithms) were applied for self-similarity exponent calculation purposes. Traditionally, researchers have been focused on identifying the beginning of a crash. Instead of this, we are pretty interested in identifying the beginning of the transition process from EM to a market bubble onset, what we consider could be more interesting. The relevance of self-similarity index in such a context lies on the fact that it becomes a suitable indicator which allows to identify the raising of HB in financial markets. Overall, we could state that the greater the self-similarity exponent in financial series, the more likely the transition process to HB could start. This fact is illustrated through actual S\&P500 stocks., Comment: 18 pages

This work is aimed by the spirit of 1946 Moran's Theorem, which ensures that both the box and the Hausdorff dimensions for any attractor could be calculated as the solution of an equation involving only its similarity factors. To achieve such result, the open set condition (OSC, herein) is required to be satisfied by the pieces of the attractor in order to guarantee that they do not overlap too much. In this paper, we generalize the classical Moran's through a fractal dimension model which allows to obtain the fractal dimension of any IFS-attractor equipped with its natural fractal structure without requiring the OSC to be satisfied., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1510.03402

Mathematics - Numerical Analysis ,65D05 - Abstract
A pattern of interpolation nodes on the disk is studied, for which the interpolation problem is theoretically unisolvent, and which renders a minimal numerical condition for the collocation matrix when the standard basis of Zernike polynomials is used. It is shown that these nodes have an excellent performance also from several alternative points of view, providing a numerically stable surface reconstruction, starting from both the elevation and the slope data. Sampling at these nodes allows for a more precise recovery of the coefficients in the Zernike expansion of a wavefront or of an optical surface., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to Appl. The main goal of this paper has a double purpose. On the one hand, we propose a new definition in order to compute the fractal dimension of a subset respect to any fractal structure, which completes the theory of classical box-counting dimension. Indeed, if we select the so called natural fractal structure on each euclidean space, then we will get the box-counting dimension as a particular case. Recall that box-counting dimension could be calculated over any euclidean space, although it can be defined over any metrizable one. Nevertheless, the new definition we present can be computed on an easy way over any space admitting a fractal structure. Thus, since a space is metrizable if and only if it supports a starbase fractal structure, our model allows to classify and distinguish a much larger number of topological spaces than the classical definition. On the other hand, our aim consists also of studying some applications of effective calculation of the fractal dimension over a kind of contexts where the box-counting dimension has no sense, like the domain of words, which appears when modeling the streams of information in Kahn's parallel computation model. In this way, we show how to calculate and understand the fractal dimension value obtained for a language generated by means of a regular expression, and also we pay attention to an empirical and novel application of fractal dimension to natural languages., Comment: 29 pages, 1 figure

- Abstract
The leaf economics spectrum and the global spectrum of plant forms and functions3 revealed fundamental axes of variation in plant traits, which represent different ecological strategies that are shaped by the evolutionary development of plant species. Ecosystem functions depend on environmental conditions and the traits of species that comprise the ecological communities. However, the axes of variation of ecosystem functions are largely unknown, which limits our understanding of how ecosystems respond as a whole to anthropogenic drivers, climate and environmental variability. Here we derive a set of ecosystem functions from a dataset of surface gas exchange measurements across major terrestrial biomes. We find that most of the variability within ecosystem functions (71.8%) is captured by three key axes. The first axis reflects maximum ecosystem productivity and is mostly explained by vegetation structure. The second axis reflects ecosystem water-use strategies and is jointly explained by variation in vegetation height and climate. The third axis, which represents ecosystem carbon-use efficiency, features a gradient related to aridity, and is explained primarily by variation in vegetation structure. We show that two state-of-the-art land surface models reproduce the first and most important axis of ecosystem functions. However, the models tend to simulate more strongly correlated functions than those observed, which limits their ability to accurately predict the full range of responses to environmental changes in carbon, water and energy cycling in terrestrial ecosystems.

Treatment of carbapenemase‐producing Enterobacterales bloodstream infections in solid organ transplant recipients is challenging. The objective of this study was to develop a specific score to predict mortality in solid organ transplant recipients with carbapenemase‐producing Enterobacterales bloodstream infections. A multinational, retrospective (2004‐2016) cohort study (INCREMENT‐SOT, ClinicalTrials.gov NCT02852902) was performed. The main outcome variable was 30‐day all‐cause mortality. The INCREMENT‐SOT‐CPE score was developed using logistic regression. The global cohort included 216 patients. The final logistic regression model included the following variables: INCREMENT‐CPE mortality score ≥8 (8 points), no source control (3 points), inappropriate empirical therapy (2 points), cytomegalovirus disease (7 points), lymphopenia (4 points), and the interaction between INCREMENT‐CPE score ≥8 and CMV disease (minus 7 points). This score showed an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.82 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.76‐0.88) and classified patients into 3 strata: 0‐7 (low mortality), 8‐11 (high mortality), and 12‐17 (very‐high mortality). We performed a stratified analysis of the effect of monotherapy vs combination therapy among 165 patients who received appropriate therapy. Monotherapy was associated with higher mortality only in the very‐high (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] 2.82, 95% CI 1.13‐7.06, P = .03) and high (HR 9.93, 95% CI 2.08‐47.40, P = .004) mortality risk strata. A score‐based algorithm is provided for therapy guidance., This work was supported by Plan Nacional de I+D+i 2013‐2016 and Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Subdirección General de Redes y Centros de Investigación Cooperativa, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades, Spanish Network for Research in Infectious Diseases [REIPI RD16/0016/0008; RD16/0016/0001, RD16/0016/0002, RD16/0016/00010] ‐ co‐financed by European Development Regional Fund “A way to achieve Europe”, Operative program Intelligent Growth 2014‐2020; ESCMID Study Group for Infections in Compromised Hosts [ESGICH grant to JMA]; Sociedad Andaluza de Trasplante de Órgano Sólido [SATOT grant to LMM]; ESCMID Study Group for Bloodstream Infections and Sepsis (ESGBIS); and ESCMID Study Group for Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance (ESGARS).

- Abstract
Background The impact of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) on postoperative recovery needs to be understood to inform clinical decision making during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. This study reports 30-day mortality and pulmonary complication rates in patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection. Methods This international, multicentre, cohort study at 235 hospitals in 24 countries included all patients undergoing surgery who had SARS-CoV-2 infection confirmed within 7 days before or 30 days after surgery. The primary outcome measure was 30-day postoperative mortality and was assessed in all enrolled patients. The main secondary outcome measure was pulmonary complications, defined as pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome, or unexpected postoperative ventilation. Findings This analysis includes 1128 patients who had surgery between Jan 1 and March 31, 2020, of whom 835 (740%) had emergency surgery and 280 (248%) had elective surgery. SARS-CoV-2 infection was confirmed preoperatively in 294 (261%) patients. 30-day mortality was 238% (268 of 1128). Pulmonary complications occurred in 577 (512%) of 1128 patients; 30-day mortality in these patients was 380% (219 of 577), accounting for 817% (219 of 268) of all deaths. In adjusted analyses, 30-day mortality was associated with male sex (odds ratio 175 [95% CI 128-240], p<00001), age 70 years or older versus younger than 70 years (230 [165-322], p<00001), American Society of Anesthesiologists grades 3-5 versus grades 1-2 (235 [157-353], p<00001), malignant versus benign or obstetric diagnosis (155 [101-239], p=0046), emergency versus elective surgery (167 [106-263], p=0026), and major versus minor surgery (152 [101-231], p=0047). Interpretation Postoperative pulmonary complications occur in half of patients with perioperative SARS-CoV-2 infection and are associated with high mortality. Thresholds for surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic should be higher than during normal

Background: Most available information on carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) is usually associated with specific types of infection or patient or with descriptions of outbreaks. The aim of this study was to comprehensively analyse the clinical epidemiology, clinical features and outcomes of colonisation and infections due to CPE in Spain. Methods: A multicentre prospective cohort study was carried out in 34 Spanish hospitals from February to May 2013. All new patients testing positive for CPE in clinical samples were included. Logistic regression was used to identify predictors of mortality. Results: Overall, 245 cases were included. The most frequent organism was Klebsiella pneumoniae (74%) and the carbapenemases belonged to the OXA-48 (74%), metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL) (24%) and KPC (2%) groups. Acquisition was nosocomial in 145 cases (60%) and healthcare- associated (HCA) in 91 (37%); 42% of the latter were nursing home residents, in whom OXA-48-producing K. pneumoniae ST405 predominated. MBLs and OXA-48 predominated in ICU and medical patients, respectively. Overall, 67% of patients had infections. The most frequent infections identified in this study were urinary tract (43%) and skin structure (21%) infections, and 10% of infections were bacteraemic. Crude mortality was 20%. Inappropriate antibiotic therapy was independently associated with an increased risk of death (OR = 3.30; 95% CI: 1.34-8.11). Conclusions: We found some differences in the epidemiology of CPE depending on the type of carbapenemase produced. Although a low proportion of CPE infections were bacteraemic, active antibiotic therapy was a protective factor for reducing mortality. (C) 2015 The British Infection Association. Objective. Serial cognitive assessments are useful for many purposes, such as monitoring cognitive decline or evaluating the result of an intervention. In order to determine if an observed change is reliable and meaningful, longitudinal reference data from non-clinical samples are needed. Since neuropsychological outcomes are affected by language and cultural background, cognitive tests should be adapted, and country-based norms collected. The lack of cross-sectional normative data for Spanish population has been partially remediated, but there is still a need of reliable change norms. This paper aims to give an initial response to this need by providing several reliable change indices (RCI) for 1-year follow-up in a Spanish sample. Method. A longitudinal observational study was designed. A total of 122 healthy subjects over age 50 were evaluated twice (M = 369.5, SD= 10.7 days) with the NEURONORMA battery. Scores changes were analyzed, and simple discrepancy scores, standard deviation indices, RCI, and standardized regression-based scores were calculated. Results. Significant improvements were observed in variables related to memory, both verbal and visual, visuospatial function, and the completion time of complex problems. Reference tables for several RCI are provided for their use in clinical settings. Conclusions. Our results confirm the existence of heterogeneous practice effects after 1 year, and support the recommendation of using reliable change norms to avoid misdiagnosis in repeated assessments. This study provides with initial, preliminary norms of cognitive change for its use in Spanish elders. Further studies on larger samples and different inter-visit intervals are still needed.

The aim of this study was to characterize the neuropsychological and neuroimaging profiles of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients, and to study the magnitude of the differences by comparing both outcomes with healthy subjects in a cross-sectional manner. Five hundred and thirty-five subjects (356 cognitively normal adults (CONT), 79 MCI, and 100 AD) were assessed with the NEURONORMA neuropsychological battery. Thirty CONT, 23 MCI, and 23 AD subjects from this sample were included in the neuroimaging substudy. Patients' raw cognitive scores were converted to age and education-adjusted scaled ones (range 2-18) using co-normed reference values. Medians were plotted to examine the cognitive profile. MRIs were processed by means of FreeSurfer. Effect size indices (Cohen's d) were calculated in order to compare the standardized differences between patients and healthy subjects. Graphically, the observed cognitive profiles for MCI and AD groups produced near to parallel lines. Verbal and visual memories were the most impaired domains in both groups, followed by executive functions and linguistic/semantic ones. The largest effect size between AD and cognitively normal subjects was found for the FCSRT (d = 4.05, AD versus CONT), which doubled the value obtained by the best MRI measure, the right hippocampus (d = 1.65, AD versus CONT). Our results support the notion of a continuum in cognitive profile between MCI and AD. Neuropsychological outcomes, in particular the FCSRT, are better than neuroimaging ones at detecting differences among subjects.

- Abstract
Forests strongly affect climate through the exchange of large amounts of atmospheric CO2. The main drivers of spatial variability in net ecosystem production (NEP) on a global scale are, however, poorly known. As increasing nutrient availability increases the production of biomass per unit of photosynthesis and reduces heterotrophic respiration in forests, we expected nutrients to determine carbon sequestration in forests. Our synthesis study of 92 forests in different climate zones revealed that nutrient availability indeed plays a crucial role in determining NEP and ecosystem carbon-use efficiency (CUEe; that is, the ratio of NEP to gross primary production (GPP)). Forests with high GPP exhibited high NEP only in nutrient-rich forests (CUEe = 33 +/- 4%; mean +/- s.e.m.). In nutrient-poor forests, a much larger proportion of GPP was released through ecosystem respiration, resulting in lower CUEe (6 +/- 4%). Our finding that nutrient availability exerts a stronger control on NEP than on carbon input (GPP) conflicts with assumptions of nearly all global coupled carbon cycle-climate models, which assume that carbon inputs through photosynthesis drive biomass production and carbon sequestration. An improved global understanding of nutrient availability would therefore greatly improve carbon cycle modelling and should become a critical focus for future research.

- Abstract
Concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) have continued to increase whereas atmospheric deposition of sulphur and nitrogen has declined in Europe and the USA during recent decades. Using time series of flux observations from 23 forests distributed throughout Europe and the USA, and generalised mixed models, we found that forest-level net ecosystem production and gross primary production have increased by 1% annually from 1995 to 2011. Statistical models indicated that increasing atmospheric CO2 was the most important factor driving the increasing strength of carbon sinks in these forests. We also found that the reduction of sulphur deposition in Europe and the USA lead to higher recovery in ecosystem respiration than in gross primary production, thus limiting the increase of carbon sequestration. By contrast, trends in climate and nitrogen deposition did not significantly contribute to changing carbon fluxes during the studied period. Our findings support the hypothesis of a general CO2-fertilization effect on vegetation growth and suggest that, so far unknown, sulphur deposition plays a significant role in the carbon balance of forests in industrialized regions. Our results show the need to include the effects of changing atmospheric composition, beyond CO2, to assess future dynamics of carbon-climate feedbacks not currently considered in earth system/climate modelling.

Introduction: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental condition in which symptoms respond to several pharmacological treatments. However, little is known about the brain mechanism of action of those treatments and the heterogeneity of response across different patients. Objectives: To determine the resting-state fMRI correlates of treatment response to stimulants in ADHD children. Methods: We recruited 68 boys and girls (ages 7-17) with ADHD in an outpatient setting. Sociodemographic, neuropsychological, and clinical data and blood samples were collected from participants, who also underwent neuroimaging (resting-state fMRI scan). Neuroimaging data were preprocessed (including motion correction) and (fractional) amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations ((f)ALFF) metrics were extracted with CPAC v1.4.3 software. All data passed quality control assessments. Initial comparison between 38 patients treated with stimulants and 23 treatmentnaïve patients was done with AFNI 3dttest++. (f)ALFF were also compared in a subsample (n=8) of naïve subjects pre- vs. postacute treatment with methylphenidate, all of whom had good clinical responses. Results: Initial cross-sectional between-group comparisons of (f) ALFF yielded no statistically significant results. In the pre-post within-subject comparison, methylphenidate induced a significant increase of fALFF in a cluster in the right primary visual cortex (MNI coordinates 12,-78,12, corrected p<0.05). Conclusions: Our findings suggest a modulatory effect of intrinsic BOLD signal fluctuations in the primary visual cortex by methylphenidate treatment in a small sample of clinically-responsive ADHD children and adolescents. Our preliminary results illustrate the improved statistical power of within-subject analyses, and highlight the primary visual cortex as a potentially relevant locus in the pharmacodynamics of ADHD treatment. The leaf economics spectrum1,2 and the global spectrum of plant forms and functions3 revealed fundamental axes of variation in plant traits, which represent different ecological strategies that are shaped by the evolutionary development of plant species2. Ecosystem functions depend on environmental conditions and the traits of species that comprise the ecological communities4. However, the axes of variation of ecosystem functions are largely unknown, which limits our understanding of how ecosystems respond as a whole to anthropogenic drivers, climate and environmental variability4,5. Here we derive a set of ecosystem functions6 from a dataset of surface gas exchange measurements across major terrestrial biomes. However, the models tend to simulate more strongly correlated functions than those observed, which limits their ability to accurately predict the full range of responses to environmental changes in carbon, water and energy cycling in terrestrial ecosystems7,8., Three key axes of variation of ecosystem functional changes and their underlying causes are identified from a dataset of surface gas exchange measurements across major terrestrial biomes and climate zones.

- Abstract
Neuroimaging research seeks to identify biomarkers to improve the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), although clinical translation of findings remains distant. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (R-fMRI) is increasingly being used to characterize functional connectivity in the brain. Despite mixed results to date and multiple methodological challenges, dominant hypotheses implicate hyperconnectivity across brain networks in patients with ADHD, which could be the target of pharmacological treatments. We describe the experience and results of the Clínica Universidad de Navarra (Spain) Metilfenidato (CUNMET) pilot study. CUNMET tested the feasibility of identifying R-fMRI markers of clinical response in children with ADHD undergoing naturalistical pharmacological treatments. We analyzed cross-sectional data from 56 patients with ADHD (18 treated with methylphenidate, 18 treated with lisdexamfetamine, and 20 treatment-naive patients). Standard preprocessing and statistical analyses with attention to control for head motion and correction for multiple comparisons were performed. The only results that survived correction were noted in contrasts of children who responded clinically to lisdexamfetamine after long-term treatment vs. treatment-naive patients. In these children, we observed stronger negative correlations (anticorrelations) across nodes in six brain networks, which is consistent with higher across-network functional segregation in patients treated with lisdexamfetamine, i.e., less inter-network interference than in treatment-naive patients. We also note the lessons learned, which could help those pursuing clinically relevant multidisciplinary research in ADHD en route to eventual personalized medicine. To advance reproducible open science, our report is accompanied with links providing access to our data and analytic scripts., Competing Interests: The authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Pereira-Sanchez, Franco, de Castro-Manglano, Fernandez-Seara, Vallejo-Valdivielso, Díez-Suárez, Fernandez-Martinez, Garcia de Eulate, Milham, Soutullo and Castellanos.)

- Abstract
Background: During magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound for essential or parkinsonian tremor, adverse events (headache, nausea/vomiting, or anxiety) may alter the outcome of the procedure despite being mostly transient and mild., Objectives: Our aim was to analyze the relationship between demographic, procedural, and anesthetic characteristics with magnetic resonance/ultrasound-related events., Methods: This was a retrospective study at the Clinica Universidad de Navarra of patients undergoing thalamotomy with magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound between September 2018 and October 2019. The anesthesia protocol included headache and nausea/vomiting prophylaxis and rescue therapy. Dexmedetomidine was used for anxiolysis in some patients after thorough multidisciplinary assessment., Results: A total of 123 patients were included. Headache was directly related to skull density ratio ( P < 0.001) and skull thickness ( P = 0.02). Patients with a skull density ratio less than 0.48 had 3 times the odds of experiencing moderate or severe headache (odds ratio [OR], 3.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.21-7.82) and had a higher odds of aborting sonication due to pain. Sex was associated with increased nausea ( P = 0.007). Women had 4 times the odds of nausea than men (OR, 4.4; 95% CI, 1.61-12.11). Dexmedetomidine did not reduce headache or nausea incidence. Patients who received dexmedetomidine had a higher number ( P = 0.01) and total minutes of sonication ( P = 0.01)., Conclusions: Patients with lower skull density ratios and higher skull thicknesses could benefit from an aggressive analgesic prophylaxis. Women are more likely to experience nausea. Dexmedetomidine did not reduce headache and nausea, but increased the number and duration of sonications. Its exact effect on tremor is still unclear., Competing Interests: The authors declare that there are no funding sources or conflicts of interest relevant to this work., (© 2021 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.)

- Abstract
A pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling (PCASL) sequence combined with background suppression and single-shot accelerated 3D RARE stack-of-spirals was used to evaluate cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) induced by breath-holding (BH) in ten healthy volunteers. Four different models designed using the measured change in PETCO2 induced by BH were compared, for CVR quantification. The objective of this comparison was to understand which regressor offered a better physiological model to characterize the cerebral blood flow response under BH. The BH task started with free breathing of 42 s, followed by interleaved end-expiration BHs of 21 s, for ten cycles. The total scan time was 12 min and 20 s. The accelerated readout allowed the acquisition of PCASL data with better temporal resolution than previously used, without compromising the post-labeling delay. Elevated CBF was observed in most cerebral regions under hypercapnia, which was delayed with respect to the BH challenge. Significant statistical differences in CVR were obtained between the different models in GM ( p < 0.0001), with ramp models yielding higher values than boxcar models and between the two tissues, GM and WM, with higher values in GM, in all the models ( p < 0.0001). The adjustment of the ramp amplitude during each BH cycle did not improve the results compared with a ramp model with a constant amplitude equal to the mean PETCO2 change during the experiment., Competing Interests: MV was employed by Siemens Healthineers. The remaining authors declare that the research was conducted in the absence of any commercial or financial relationships that could be construed as a potential conflict of interest., (Copyright © 2021 Solis-Barquero, Echeverria-Chasco, Calvo-Imirizaldu, Cacho-Asenjo, Martinez-Simon, Vidorreta, Dominguez, García de Eulate, Fernandez-Martinez and Fernández-Seara.)

- Abstract
We report the genome sequences of 14 cluster K mycobacteriophages isolated using Mycobacterium smegmatis mc²155 as host. Four are closely related to subcluster K1 phages, and 10 are members of subcluster K6. The phage genomes span considerable sequence diversity, including multiple types of integrases and integration sites., (Copyright © 2017 Anders et al.)

- Abstract
We describe the genome sequences of three closely related mycobacteriophages, Kerberos, Pomar16, and StarStuff, isolated at similar times but from geographically distinct regions. All three genomes are similar to those of other subcluster A2 phages, such as L5 and D29, are temperate, and have siphoviral virion morphologies., (Copyright © 2017 Jacobs-Sera et al.)

- Abstract
Background: Sense of Coherence (SOC) is defined as a tendency to perceive life experiences as comprehensible, manageable and meaningful. The construct is split in three major domains: Comprehensibility, Manageability, and Meaningfulness. SOC has been associated with successful coping strategies in the face of illness and traumatic events and is a predictor of self-reported and objective health in a variety of contexts. In the present study we aim to evaluate the association of SOC with disability and dependence in Spanish elders., Methods: A total of 377 participants aged 75 years or over from nine locations across Spain participated in the study (Mean age: 80.9 years; 65.3% women). SOC levels were considered independent variables in two ordinal logistic models on disability and dependence, respectively. Disability was established with the World health Organization-Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0 (36-item version), while dependence was measured with the Extended Katz Index on personal and instrumental activities of daily living. The models included personal (sex, age, social contacts, availability of an intimate confidant), environmental (municipality size, access to social resources) and health-related covariates (morbidity)., Results: High Meaningfulness was a strong protective factor against both disability (Odds Ratio [OR] = 0.50; 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 0.29-0.87) and dependence (OR = 0.33; 95% CI = 0.19-0.58) while moderate and high Comprehensibility was protective for disability (OR = 0.40; 95% CI = 0.22-0.70 and OR = 0.39; 95%CI = 0.21-0.74), but not for dependence. Easy access to social and health resources was also highly protective against both disability and dependence., Conclusions: Our results are consistent with the view that high levels of SOC are protective against disability and dependence in the elderly. Elderly individuals with limited access to social and health resources and with low SOC may be a group at risk for dependence and disability in Spain.

- Abstract
Force generation in the muscle sarcomere is driven by the head domain of the myosin molecule extending from the thick filament to form cross-bridges with the actin-containing thin filament. Following attachment, a structural working stroke in the head pulls the thin filament towards the centre of the sarcomere, producing, under unloaded conditions, a filament sliding of ∼ 11 nm. The mechanism of force generation by the myosin head depends on the relationship between cross-bridge force and movement, which is determined by compliances of the cross-bridge (C(cb)) and filaments. By measuring the force dependence of the spacing of the high-order myosin- and actin-based X-ray reflections from sartorius muscles of Rana esculenta we find a combined filament compliance (Cf) of 13.1 ± 1.2 nm MPa(-1), close to recent estimates from single fibre mechanics (12.8 ± 0.5 nm MPa(-1)). C(cb) calculated using these estimates is 0.37 ± 0.12 nm pN(-1), a value fully accounted for by the compliance of the myosin head domain, 0.38 ± 0.06 nm pN(-1), obtained from the intensity changes of the 14.5 nm myosin-based X-ray reflection in response to 3 kHz oscillations imposed on single muscle fibres in rigor. Thus, a significant contribution to C(cb) from the myosin tail that joins the head to the thick filament is excluded. The low C(cb) value indicates that the myosin head generates isometric force by a small sub-step of the 11 nm stroke that drives filament sliding at low load. The implications of these results for the mechanism of force generation by myosins have general relevance for cardiac and non-muscle myosins as well as for skeletal muscle., (© 2014 The Authors.
