Abstract

Current precision experiments with single (anti)protons to test CPT symmetry progress at a rapid pace, but are complicated by the need to cool particles to sub-thermal energies. We describe a cryogenic Penning-trap setup for $^9$Be$^+$ ions designed to allow coupling of single (anti)protons to laser-cooled atomic ions for sympathetic cooling and quantum logic spectroscopy. We report on trapping and laser cooling of clouds and single $^9$Be$^+$ ions. We discuss prospects for a microfabricated trap to allow coupling of single (anti)protons to laser-cooled $^9$Be$^+$ ions for sympathetic laser cooling to sub-mK temperatures on ms time scales., Comment: Presented at the Eighth Meeting on CPT and Lorentz Symmetry, Bloomington, Indiana, May 12-16, 2019

Abstract

We present a highly stable bow-tie power enhancement cavity for critical second-harmonic generation into the UV using a Brewster-cut $\beta$-BaB$_2$O$_4$ (BBO) nonlinear crystal. The cavity geometry is suitable for all UV wavelengths reachable with BBO and can be modified to accommodate anti-reflection coated crystals, extending its applicability to the entire wavelength range accessible with non-linear frequency conversion. The cavity is length-stabilized using a fast general purpose digital PI controller based on the open source STEMlab 125-14 (formerly Red Pitaya) system acting on a mirror mounted on a fast piezo actuator. We observe $130\,\mathrm{h}$ uninterrupted operation without decay in output power at $313\,\mathrm{nm}$. The robustness of the system has been confirmed by exposing it to accelerations of up to $1\,\mathrm{g}$ with less than $10\%$ in-lock output power variations. Furthermore, the cavity can withstand 30~minutes of acceleration exposure at a level of $3\,\mathrm{g}_\mathrm{rms}$ without substantial change in SHG output power, demonstrating that the design is suitable for transportable setups.

Abstract

The ambitious instrument suite for the future European Spallation Source whose civil construction started recently in Lund, Sweden, demands a set of diverse and challenging requirements for the neutron detectors. For instance, the unprecedented high flux expected on the samples to be investigated in neutron diffraction or reflectometry experiments requires detectors that can handle high counting rates, while the investigation of sub-millimeter protein crystals will only be possible with large-area detectors that can achieve a position resolution as low as 200 {\mu}m. This has motivated an extensive research and development campaign to advance the state-of-the-art detector and to find new technologies that can reach maturity by the time the ESS will operate at full potential. This paper presents the key detector requirements for three of the Time-of-Flight diffraction instrument concepts selected by the Scientific Advisory Committee to advance into the phase of preliminary engineering design. We discuss the available detector technologies suitable for this particular instrument class and their major challenges. The detector technologies selected by the instrument teams to collect the diffraction patterns are briefly discussed. Analytical calculations, Monte-Carlo simulations, and real experimental data are used to develop a generic method to esti- mate the event rate in the diffraction detectors. The proposed approach is based upon conservative assumptions that use information and input parameters that reflect our current level of knowledge and understanding of the ESS project. We apply this method to make predictions for the future diffraction instruments, and thus provide additional information that can help the instrument teams with the optimisation of the detector designs., Comment: 25 pages, 5 figures

4. Labour and health in colonial Nigeria

Abstract

We examine the determinants of time allocation and child labour in a year-long panel of time-use data from colonial Nigeria. Using quantitative and ethnographic approaches, we show that health shocks imposed time costs on individuals. Whether individuals could recruit substitutes depended on social standing, urgency of work, and type of illness. Child labour did not systematically respond to temporary parental illness, but could replace a permanently disabled adult. Child labour was coordinated with parental work, aided childcare, and allowed children to build skills and resources. These decisions can be understood within an endogenous bargaining power framework with labour complementarities.

Abstract

The safe use of cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) relies upon the ability to administer, monitor, and reverse anticoagulation. Although rare, the factor XII deficient patient creates a challenge for the perfusionist due to resultant complications in monitoring anticoagulation. There have been proposed strategies to aid in monitoring anticoagulation in factor XII deficient patients, however, documentation of successful monitoring during CPB is infrequent. With the use of the Hemochron Signature Elite and ACT + cartridges, CPB in a factor XII deficient 8-month-old was completed with predictable and reliable anticoagulation monitoring. This case report explores the current suggestions for factor XII deficiency management with CPB.

Abstract

An overview is provided of the 15 neutron beam instruments making up the initial instrument suite of the European Spallation Source (ESS), and being made available to the neutron user community. The ESS neutron source consists of a high-power accelerator and target station, providing a unique long-pulse time structure of slow neutrons. The design considerations behind the time structure, moderator geometry and instrument layout are presented. The 15-instrument suite consists of two small-angle instruments, two reflectometers, an imaging beamline, two single-crystal diffractometers; one for macromolecular crystallography and one for magnetism, two powder diffractometers, and an engineering diffractometer, as well as an array of five inelastic instruments comprising two chopper spectrometers, an inverse-geometry single-crystal excitations spectrometer, an instrument for vibrational spectroscopy and a high-resolution backscattering spectrometer. The conceptual design, performance and scientific drivers of each of these instruments are described. All of the instruments are designed to provide breakthrough new scientific capability, not currently available at existing facilities, building on the inherent strengths of the ESS long-pulse neutron source of high flux, flexible resolution and large bandwidth. Each of them is predicted to provide world-leading performance at an accelerator power of 2 MW. This technical capability translates into a very broad range of scientific capabilities. The composition of the instrument suite has been chosen to maximise the breadth and depth of the scientific impact of the early years of the ESS, and provide a solid base for completion and further expansion of the facility.

Abstract

An overview is provided of the 15 neutron beam instruments making up the initial instrument suite of the European Spallation Source (ESS), and being made available to the neutron user community. The ESS neutron source consists of a high-power accelerator and target station, providing a unique long-pulse time structure of slow neutrons. The design considerations behind the time structure, moderator geometry and instrument layout are presented. The 15-instrument suite consists of two small-angle instruments, two reflectometers, an imaging beamline, two single-crystal diffractometers; one for macromolecular crystallography and one for magnetism, two powder diffractometers, and an engineering diffractometer, as well as an array of five inelastic instruments comprising two chopper spectrometers, an inverse-geometry single-crystal excitations spectrometer, an instrument for vibrational spectroscopy and a high-resolution backscattering spectrometer. The conceptual design, performance and scientific drivers of each of these instruments are described. All of the instruments are designed to provide breakthrough new scientific capability, not currently available at existing facilities, building on the inherent strengths of the ESS long-pulse neutron source of high flux, flexible resolution and large bandwidth. Each of them is predicted to provide world-leading performance at an accelerator power of 2 MW. This technical capability translates into a very broad range of scientific capabilities. Abstract

The ambitious instrument suite for the future European Spallation Source whose civil construction started recently in Lund, Sweden, demands a set of diverse and challenging requirements for the neutron detectors. For instance, the unprecedented high flux expected on the samples to be investigated in neutron diffraction or reflectometry experiments requires detectors that can handle high counting rates, while the investigation of sub-millimeter protein crystals will only be possible with large-area detectors that can achieve a position resolution as low as 200 μm. This has motivated an extensive research and development campaign to advance the state-of-the-art detector and to find new technologies that can reach maturity by the time the ESS will operate at full potential. This paper presents the key detector requirements for three of the Time-of-Flight (TOF) diffraction instrument concepts selected by the Scientific Advisory Committee to advance into the phase of preliminary engineering design. We discuss the detector technologies commonly employed at the existing similar instruments and their major challenges for ESS. The detector technologies selected by the instrument teams to collect the diffraction patterns are also presented. Analytical calculations, Monte-Carlo simulations, and real experimental data are used to develop a generic method to estimate the event rate in the diffraction detectors. We apply this method to make predictions for the future diffraction instruments, and thus provide additional information that can help the instrument teams with the optimisation of the detector designs.

Abstract

We study the origins of adult mental health using early life income fluctuations. Combining a time series of real producer prices of cocoa with a nationally representative household survey in Ghana, we show that a one standard deviation rise in the cocoa price in early life decreases the likelihood of severe mental distress in adulthood by 3 percentage points (or half the mean prevalence) for cohorts born in cocoa-producing regions relative to other regions. Impacts on related personality traits are consistent with this result. Maternal nutrition, reinforcing childhood investments, and adult circumstance are operative channels of impact.

18. The battle for rubber in Benin

Abstract

At the start of the Second World War, British policies restricted rubber planting in Nigeria’s Benin region. After Japan occupied Southeast Asia, Britain encouraged maximum production of rubber in Benin. Late in the war, officials struggled with the planting boom that had occurred. The war was a period of both continuity and change. Producers gained experience and capital. Forestry policies restricting planting survived, and output quality continued to occupy officials after the war. The colonial state was hindered by a lack of knowledge and resources, and by its pursuit of conflicting objectives in giving incentives to both producers and traders.

Abstract

Although Nigeria’s Benin region was a major rubber producer in 1960, the industry developed slowly. The colonial government encouraged rubber production from 1897 until 1921, when it abandoned the industry as a failure. I explain why rubber did not take hold in this period. The government was unable to protect Benin’s rubber forests from over-exploitation. Expatriate firms were reticent to invest in plantations, and private African plantations remained small to 1921. The colonial government promoted the development of “communal” plantations, but these suffered from labor scarcity, a weak state, limited information, and global competition.

Abstract

State capacity matters for growth. I test Bates' explanation of pre-colonial African states. He argues that trade across ecological boundaries promoted states. I find that African societies in ecologically diverse environments had more centralized states. This is robust to reverse causation, omitted heterogeneity, and alternative interpretations of the link between diversity and states. Ecological diversity also predicts states outside of Africa. I test mechanisms connecting trade to states, and find that trade supported class stratification between rulers and ruled. I underscore the importance of ethnic institutions and inform our knowledge of the effects of geography and trade on institutions.

Abstract

The temperature-dependent magnetic structure of a 200 nm thick single-crystalline film of Fe50Pt40Rh10 was studied by unpolarized and polarized neutron diffractions. By applying structure factor calculations, a detailed model of the magnetic unit cell was developed. In contrast to former studies on bulk samples, our experimental results show that the film remains in an antiferromagnetic state throughout the temperature range of 10-450 K. Remarkably, it can be demonstrated that the antiferromagnetic structure undergoes a smooth transition from a dominant out-of-plane order with the magnetic moments orientated in-plane to an in-plane order with the magnetic moments orientated perpendicular to the film plane. Theoretically this can be explained by the existence of two competing anisotropy contributions with different temperature dependencies.

Abstract

Neutron detection by MWPC based on 10B4C coatings can surpass in performance the one utilising 3He-gas in terms of position resolution and count rate capability at similar detection efficiency [13]. The use of m2-size foils coated by 10B4C demands the development of a mechanical concept to avoid deformations of the neutron sensitive surface due to their own weight and the electrostatic forces resulting from high voltage for operation. To preserve a flat shape of the converter, a pressure gradient is applied between its both sides [4]. The design shall allow a stacking of detection modules consisting of sequenced elements [converter/x-y-multi-wire planes/converter] in few mm proximity. A multiple stacking of the detector modules is needed to accumulate a sufficient high detection efficiency for diffraction with thermal neutrons over the entire detector [2]. The MWPC is planned to have fifteen detection modules corresponding to an efficiency equivalent of 30 converters coated with 1.2 µm of 10B4C. Efficiency simulations of a converter coating thickness-profile from 0.6 µm up to 1.2 µm prognoses a conversion rate up to 50 % for thermal neutrons and the presented design parameters of the 1-m2 MWPC allow a position resolution of 2 mm.

26. Measurement of Absolute Unimolecular and Bimolecular Rate Constants for CH<INF>3</INF>CHOO Generated by the trans-2-Butene Reaction with Ozone in the Gas Phase

Abstract

Ozone−alkene reactions form vibrationally excited Criegee intermediates (of the form R1R2COO), some of which, once thermalized, are thought to react with SO2, H2O, NOx, aldehydes, and alcohols. Several studies using relative rate techniques or ab initio calculations have resulted in estimates for the rate coefficients of reactions of the thermalized biradicals. The ranges of measured and estimated rate coefficients span 2−6 orders of magnitude, depending on the reaction partner. Using an atmospheric pressure flow reactor, we have made the first absolute rate coefficient determinations for reactions of a thermalized Criegee intermediate, measuring rates for unimolecular decomposition and reaction with acetaldehyde. For the thermalized CH3CHOO formed in trans-2-butene ozonolysis, values for kdec = 76 s-1 and kald = 1.0 × 10-12 cm3 molecule-1 s-1, accurate to within a factor of 3 and 6, respectively, were obtained.

27. OH Radical Yields from the Ozone Reaction with Cycloalkenes

Abstract

OH radical formation yields from the reaction of ozone with several cycloalkenes were measured using small amounts of fast-reacting aromatics and aliphatic ethers to trace OH formation. Measured OH yields are much higher than for acyclic analogues. The yields are 0.62 ± 0.15, 0.54 ± 0.13, 0.36 ± 0.08, and 0.91 ± 0.20 for cyclopentene, cyclohexene, cycloheptene, and 1-methylcyclohexene, respectively. Density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level are presented to aid in understanding the trends observed. Theory indicates that the OH production from cycloalkenes is largely controlled by the transition states for the cycloreversion of the primary ozonide.

28. The Pressure Dependence of the OH Radical Yield from Ozone−Alkene Reactions

Abstract

The OH radical is the key oxidizing agent in the troposphere, and ozone−alkene reactions appear to be a significant and sometimes dominant source of new HOx radicals in urban and rural air. In this work, we report the first study of the pressure dependence of the OH radical yield for the ozonolysis of ethene, propene, 1-butene, trans-2-butene, and 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene over the range 20−760 Torr and of trans-3-hexene and cyclopentene over the range 200−760 Torr. Low-pressure experiments were performed in a long-path evacuable FTIR cell or a steady-state flow-tube reactor in series with a gas chromatograph/flame ionization detector and FTIR cell. We have also investigated the effect of adding SF6 at atmospheric pressure for ethene, 1-butene, and trans-2-butene, in a collapsible Teflon chamber. OH formation increased almost 3-fold for ethene at low pressures, from 0.22 ± 0.06 at 760 Torr to 0.61 ± 0.18 at 20 Torr, and increased somewhat for propene from 0.33 ± 0.07 at 760 Torr to 0.46 ± 0.11 at 20 Torr. A pressure dependence of the OH formation yield was not observed for 1-butene, trans-2-butene, 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene, trans-3-hexene, or cyclopentene over the ranges studied. Density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level are presented to aid in understanding the trends observed. They lead to the proposal that the formation of a hydroperoxide via a diradical pathway can compete with the formation of the carbonyl oxide for the ethene primary ozonide.

Abstract

A small-ratio relative-rate technique to derive OH yields from O3 reactions with alkenes is described. OH tracer compounds&sbd;aromatic and aliphatic hydrocarbons&sbd;are added to O3−alkene mixtures in small quantities. Under these conditions, a large fraction of the tracer is consumed, resulting in a large signal that allows accurate determination of OH formation yields. Analytical approximations, numerical analysis, and sources of random and systematic uncertainties are discussed. This method is applied to measuring the OH formation yield from the O3 reaction with propene and ethene, finding 0.35 ± 0.07 and 0.18 ± 0.06, respectively.

30. Role of arginine deiminase in growth of Mycoplasma hominis

Abstract

Arginine has been considered as the major energy source of nonglycolytic arginine-utilizing mycoplasmata. When three strains of Mycoplasma arginini, and one strain each of Mycoplasma arthritidis, Mycoplasma fermentans, Mycoplasma gallinarum, Mycoplasma gallisepticum and Mycoplasma hominis were grown in the medium with high arginine concentration (34 mM) compared with low arginine (4 mM), both the protein content of the organisms and the specific activity of arginine deiminase increased. M. fermentans, the one arginine-utilizing species included in the survey which is also glycolytic, showed an increase in protein content but no increase in specific activity of the enzyme. The glycolytic non-arginine-utilizing M. gallisepticum did not show an increase in either parameter. The Km for arginine deiminase from crude cell extracts was 1.66 X 10(-4)M. The enzyme demonstrated a hyperbolic activation curve subject to substrate inhibition and was not affected by the presence of L-histidine. When mycoplasmic protein and arginine deiminase were determined for M. hominis under aerobic and anaerobic conditions, aerobically grown cells exhibited no detectable enzymatic increases until late in log phase. Higher levels of arginine deiminase were observed earlier in the anaerobic growth cycle. The rate of 14CO2 evolution from [guanido-14C]arginine was not altered in arginine-supplemented cells compared with cells grown in low arginine. In addition, CO2 production did not parallel increased arginine deiminase activity. These observations argue that arginine is used only as an alternate energy source in these organisms.

Abstract

This thesis assesses how a large safety-net programme in rural Ethiopia affects local labour markets. Combining repeated cross-sections of the National Labour Force Survey with information on the geographical targeting of the programme, a differencein- differences approach is used to estimate whether employment outcomes have changed differently over time in targeted districts relative to those that did not receive the programme. The results suggest that a combination of public works employment and unconditional transfers to food-insecure households does not affect the local labour supply in this rural economy. I explore whether differential trends and population composition could explain these results, which are more likely due to programme design. Albeit scantily observed, the wages of private sector labourers also seem unaffected, in contrast to findings from similar studies focusing on labour markets from other developing countries outside Africa.

Abstract

We show that the long-run consequences of historical warfare are different for Sub-Saharan Africa than for the rest of the Old World. We identify the locations of over 1,750 conflicts in Africa, Asia, and Europe from 1400 to 1799. We find that historical warfare predicts greater state capacity today across the Old World, including in Sub-Saharan Africa. There is no significant correlation between historical warfare and current civil conflicts across the rest of the Old World. However, this correlation is strong and positive in Sub-Saharan Africa. Thus, while a history of conflict predicts higher per capita GDP for the rest of the Old World, this positive consequence is overturned for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Abstract

This thesis analyses the interaction between development and integration into global markets. Chapter 1 studies whether international crop prices affect formal land tenure in Uganda. Higher agricultural prices induce farmers to increase their share of titled land. This effect results from the combination of an income effect, an incentive effect, and the interaction between social status and social capital. Prices have a positive impact on agricultural income and sales revenues. The effect of prices on land tenure is stronger when farmers have undertaken investment on the land, for the prices of export crops, and when farmers fear expropriation and land grabbing. In areas with lower social capital, land insecurity is higher. Elite groups in low-social-capital communities respond more to an increase in prices, whereas disadvantaged groups are better-off where social capital is higher. Chapter 2 evaluates the adjustment cost to the DR-CAFTA free trade agreement in Honduras. The agreement produces a reduction in household income in Honduran regions more intensely exposed to trade. The result is driven by local labour market effects: workers are not able to relocate across locations or sectors, and a generalised reduction in wages pushes many out of the labour force or into less lucrative, informal-sector activities. Chapter 3 investigates the relationship between migrant remittances and financial development across Italian provinces in the late Nineteenth-early Twentieth centuries. Remittances have a positive impact on the growth of bank deposits. Higher remittances are associated with increased GDP and a higher number of active bank branches, and therefore contribute to enhancing financial inclusion. Chapter 4 is an empirical application of theoretical models of trade with product variety and firm heterogeneity, and measures the gains from trade predicted by these models for Italy between 1870 and 2000. The analysis accounts for gains from variety, firm selection effects, and technology spillovers, and allows the trade elasticity to vary over time, reflecting the main economic and political phases of Italian history.

35. Essays on gender and children

Abstract

This thesis investigates the causes of childhood outcomes. In Chapter 1, written with Elisabetta De Cao, we show that unemployment causes child neglect in the United States, during the period from 2004 to 2012. We identify this effect using a Bartik instrument, which we create by combining national-level unemployment rates across industries with differences in the initial industrial structure across counties. We find evidence that parents in the United States lack the social and private safety nets needed to provide for their children's basic needs in the event of a job loss. In Chapter 2, written with Sonia Bhalotra, we find that fathers work less after having a first born son rather than a daughter in the United Kingdom, during the period from 2009 to 2016. The effect occurs on both the extensive and intensive margins, and in the first year of the child's life. Our identification strategy exploits the randomness of the gender of the first child. We find evidence that degree educated fathers and their partners both take time off work to increase the total parental time invested in sons, because boys' development is less advanced than girls' development at a young age. We find evidence that non-degree educated fathers take time off work to reduce the burden of childcare on their partners, which helps their partners to return to work sooner after childbirth. Finally, in Chapter 3, I find that female leaders elected to the State Legislative Assembly improve child learning in their districts in rural India, during the period from 2008 to 2014. The effect occurs for both reading and mathematics, and the gender gap in mathematics narrows. To identify this effect, I instrument for the fraction of seats won by a woman in a district with the fraction of seats won by a woman in a close election against a man. The most plausible explanation for the effects is that female leaders try to improve educational outcomes around the time of an election, in the hope of re-election.

36. State capacity, violence and industrialization in Rwanda and England

Abstract

Economic prosperity across African countries has greatly diverged over the last decades. One the one end, countries like Botswana, Ethiopia and Rwanda have grown rapidly. Others, like the Democratic Republic of the Congo, are poorer in the 21st century than they were at independence. Growing evidence shows that a considerable share of this variation is explained by the presence of centralized precolonial polities within these countries (Michalopoulos & Papaiannou, 2013). In this thesis, I investigate whether there is an effect of having a tradition of statehood matters for development outcomes today. I also investigate potential mechanisms behind the effect of a longer tradition of statehood and ask if there are interaction effects between historical states and intermediate outcomes. I furthermore attempt to understand the effects of large-scale state intervention in the rural economy of England on industrialization. This dissertation, then, is a study of the role of the state in comparative economic development.

37. Essays in the economics of violence

Abstract

In this thesis, I analyse the impact of economic shocks on violence, and the mechanisms underlying them. I also investigate the long-term effects of violence on economic outcomes. In my first chapter, I introduce this thesis, and broadly outline its aims and contributions. In my second chapter, I examine lynchings of African Americans in the US South from 1882 to 1930, and show that cotton price shocks predict lynchings. Lynchings also predict more black out-migration from 1920 to 1930, and higher state-level wages. Using a simple model, I show that this is consistent with lynchings having labour market effects that benefitted whites: lynchings cause blacks to migrate away, lowering labour supply and increasing wages for white labourers. I then turn to the long-term effects of lynchings. I show that Mississippi counties with more violence during a 1964 Civil Rights campaign also had more lynchings during the earlier period. Finally, lynchings persist in labour market outcomes: present-day results show that lynchings predict higher black-white worker, family, and household income gaps. In my third chapter, I turn to FrenchWest Africa, a co-authored work with James Fenske. We show that rainfall, temperature, and commodity price shocks predict unrest in colonial French West Africa between 1906 and 1956. We use a simple model of taxation and anti-tax resistance to explain these results. In the colonial period, the response of unrest to economic shocks was strongest in more remote areas and those lacking a history of pre-colonial states. In modern data spanning 1997 to 2011, the effect of economic shocks on unrest is weaker. Past patterns of heterogeneity are no longer present. The response of unrest to economic shocks, then, differs across institutional contexts within a single location. In my fourth and last chapter, I find that favourable temperatures and favourable economic conditions predict more witchcraft trials in Early Modern Scotland (1563-1727), a largely agricultural economy. During this time, witchcraft was a secular crime, and it was incumbent on local elites to commit resources to trying witches. Consistent with this, I find that positive price shocks to export-heavy, taxable goods like herring and wool predict more witch trials, while price shocks to Scotland's main subsistence commodity, oats, do not.

38. Essays in the economic history of South Asia: 1891 to 2009

Abstract

This thesis presents research that subscribes to the broader theme of the Economic History of South Asia from 1891 to 2009. First, Chapter 2 shows that the Partition induced expulsion of religious minorities reduced school provision in Pakistan. The effect of minorities is explained by their education, occupational structure and their contribution towards local social capital. Then, Chapter 3 examines how areas affected by the Partition fare in terms of long-run agricultural development in India. It finds that areas that received more displaced migrants after Partition perform better in terms of crop yields, are more likely to take up of high yielding varieties (HYV) of seeds, and are more likely to use agricultural technologies. It highlights the superior educational status of the migrants as a potential pathway for the observed effects. Next, Chapter 4 shows that the agricultural productivity shock induced by the adoption of HYV of seeds reduced infant mortality across districts in India. It uses data on the characteristics of children and mothers in the sample to show that it was children born to mothers whose characteristics generally correlate with higher child mortality, children born in rural areas, boys, children born in rice and wheat producing districts and children born in poorer households who benefit more from HYV adoption. Furthermore, Chapter 5 shows that baseline differences in irrigation prior to the adoption of HYV are associated with differences in the growth of yields after adoption. It explores the relationship between irrigation and yields over time to uncover potential mechanisms for the observed relationship. Finally, Chapter 6 empirically investigates the relationship between religious shrines and literacy in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

39. The long-term impact of the Italian colonial expenditures in the Horn of Africa

Abstract

A growing body of literature analyses the relationship between colonialism and long-term development, but largely overlooks the effect of colonial public investments on transportation infrastructure, schooling and sanitary facilities. In my research, I exploit the case study of Italian colonial investments in the Horn of Africa between 1934 and 1941, to unveil the relationship between such investments and present-day inequalities in terms of level of development and living standards and to explore the mechanisms that explain the persistence of colonial investments over time. I create three geo-referenced (a grid dataset and two individual) datasets by matching historical data on colonial investments, collected from both archival and printed primary sources, with micro-level open-source contemporary data for development and modern surveys for living standards to perform OLS and probit regression analysis. Firstly, I regress proxies for level of development, such as population density and light density at night, on dummies for being within 20km from colonial roads. Secondly, I regress measures of living standards, such as female literacy, BMI and children holding a sanitary card, on binary variables for living less than 10km away from a colonial schools and hospitals. Several robustness checks are performed to address the possible endogenous placement of colonial facilities including IV estimation, placebo treatment and nearest neighbour score matching. The data show a strong, positive and statistically significant relationship between proximity to colonial roads and economic development, on the one hand, and proximity to schooling, sanitary facilities and living standards, on the other. This demonstrates that areas endowed with more generous investments from the colonial period perform better in terms of economic development and living standards at present. The analysis also points out that the effect persisted mainly through phenomena of path-dependency and re-location.

Abstract

The MIRACLES team., An overview is provided of the 15 neutron beam instruments making up the initial instrument suite of the European Spallation Source (ESS), and being made available to the neutron user community. The ESS neutron source consists of a high-power accelerator and target station, providing a unique long-pulse time structure of slow neutrons. The design considerations behind the time structure, moderator geometry and instrument layout are presented. The 15-instrument suite consists of two small-angle instruments, two reflectometers, an imaging beamline, two single-crystal diffractometers; one for macromolecular crystallography and one for magnetism, two powder diffractometers, and an engineering diffractometer, as well as an array of five inelastic instruments comprising two chopper spectrometers, an inverse-geometry single-crystal excitations spectrometer, an instrument for vibrational spectroscopy and a high-resolution backscattering spectrometer. The conceptual design, performance and scientific drivers of each of these instruments are described. All of the instruments are designed to provide breakthrough new scientific capability, not currently available at existing facilities, building on the inherent strengths of the ESS long-pulse neutron source of high flux, flexible resolution and large bandwidth. Each of them is predicted to provide world-leading performance at an accelerator power of 2 MW. This technical capability translates into a very broad range of scientific capabilities. The composition of the instrument suite has been chosen to maximise the breadth and depth of the scientific impact of the early years of the ESS, and provide a solid base for completion and further expansion of the facility., Some of the work described here is part of projects that have received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research programme: SINE 2020 under grant agreement number 654000, BrightnESS under grant agreement number 676548, and SoNDe under grant agreement number 654124. 41. Comparative study of CAD/CAM reconstruction and miniplates for patient-specific fixation in LCL-type mandibular reconstruction.

Abstract

Objective: Miniplates offer superior clinical handling and facilitate postoperative removal after mandibular reconstruction but unfavorable load distribution under high stress has been shown. This study aimed to compare the clinical outcome of patient-specific 3D-printed (PS-3D) titanium miniplate with reconstruction plate fixation in three-segmental LCL-type reconstructions for the first time., Methods: Patients undergoing three-segmental LCL-type mandibular reconstruction after malignant tumor resection between April 2017 and July 2023 were analyzed in a retrospective single-center study. Inclusion criteria were primary reconstruction using a fibula free flap and PS-3D titanium mini- or reconstruction plate fixation. Complication rates were recorded and analyzed within 6 months after surgery using the N - 1 Chi 2 - and unequal variance t-test., Results: 38 patients (10 females, 28 males; mean age 61.4 ± 7.6 years) met the inclusion criteria. In 14 patients (36.8%) miniplates were used in the anterior region. Rates of fixation failure, plate exposure, incomplete osseous union, wound infection, soft tissue, and overall complications did not differ significantly between the two plate systems., Conclusion: Complication rates did not differ significantly between PS-3D mini- and reconstruction plates in three-segmental LCL-type mandibular reconstructions. 42. Dust and Death: Evidence from the West African Harmattan.

Abstract

Using two decades of data from 12 low-income countries in West Africa, we show that dust carried by harmattan trade winds increases infant and child mortality. Health investments respond to dust exposure, consistent with compensating behaviours. Despite these efforts, surviving children still exhibit negative health impacts. Our data allow us to investigate differential impacts over time and across countries. We find declining impacts over time, suggesting adaptation. Using national-level measures of macroeconomic conditions and health resources, we find suggestive evidence that both economic development and public health improvements have contributed to this adaptation, with health improvements playing a larger role., (© The Author(s) 2024. Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality globally, with adverse health consequences largely related to hyperglycemia. Despite clinical practice guideline recommendations, effective pharmacotherapy, and interventions to support patients and providers, up to 60% of patients diagnosed with T2DM are estimated to have hemoglobin A 1c (HbA 1c ) levels above the recommended targets owing to multilevel barriers hindering optimal glycemic control., Objective: The aim of this study is to compare changes in HbA 1c levels among patients with suboptimally controlled T2DM who were offered the opportunity to use an intermittently viewed continuous glucose monitor and receive personalized low-carbohydrate nutrition counseling (<100 g/day) versus those who received usual care (UC)., Methods: This was a 12-month, pragmatic, randomized quality improvement program. All adult patients with T2DM who received primary care at a university-affiliated primary care clinic (N=1584) were randomized to either the UC or the enhanced care (EC) group. Within each program arm, we identified individuals with HbA 1c >7.5% (58 mmol/mol) who were medically eligible for tighter glycemic control, and we defined these subgroups as UC-high risk (UC-HR) or EC-HR. UC-HR participants (n=197) received routine primary care. EC-HR participants (n=185) were invited to use an intermittently viewed continuous glucose monitor and receive low-carbohydrate nutrition counseling. The primary outcome was mean change in HbA 1c levels from baseline to 12 months using an intention-to-treat difference-in-differences analysis comparing EC-HR with UC-HR groups. We conducted follow-up semistructured interviews to understand EC-HR participant experiences with the intervention., Results: HbA 1c decreased by 0.41% (4.5 mmol/mol; P=.04) more from baseline to 12 months among participants in the EC-HR group than among those in UC-HR; however, only 61 (32.9%) of 185 EC-HR participants engaged in the program. Among the EC-HR participants who wore continuous glucose monitors (61/185, 32.9%), HbA 1c was 1.1% lower at 12 months compared with baseline (P<.001). Abstract

The diversity, estimated richness and abundance of terrestrial insect communities were examined along a stress gradient of past pollution in the region of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. This gradient represents the natural recovery and lingering effects of a decommissioned copper-nickel smelting complex. Ant genera and sixteen higher taxonomic groups (family and order) had the highest abundance at the sites with intermediate stress. Eight families increased in abundance with distance from the decommissioned source of pollution and eleven families decreased reflecting a complex response of diversity to pollution. Carabid beetles show an increase in diversity further from the smelter; however, examination of the species composition reveals a distinct carabid community closest to the smelter, emphasizing the unique habitat created by severe pollution. Although almost forty years since decomissioning of the smelter complex, the terrestrial insect community in the vicinity remains significantly impacted suggesting slow recovery., (Crown Copyright © 2011. Abstract

This investigation studied the substrate protein interaction of the alpha, beta elimination reaction in tryptophanase (EC 4.1.99.1). The results of this work are 2-fold. (a) The presence of multiple enzyme sites was found to be related to the observed kinetic patterns of inhibition. Indole analogues caused competitive inhibition in the tryptophanase reaction and noncompetitive inhibition in the dehydratase reaction. Inhibition patterns of alanine for these activities were reserved. (b) Under some conditions, compounds which bind presumably at the indole site modified the spectral and fluorescent characteristics of the enzyme. The addition of anthranilate to the enzyme resulted in a broad absorption band around 350 nm. This absorption band was distinct from that formed by alanine addition. Based on absorption data, both of these compounds could be bound simultaneously. The optical activity of tryptophanase was reported for the first time. Indole analogues caused greater conformational alterations in the circular dichroism spectra than 3-carbon analogues. The calculated anisotrophy factors, as well as fluorescent quenching data, suggest a more direct interaction between indole analogues and pyridoxal-P than between 3-carbon compounds that the coenzyme. It is proposed that the indole site is the dominant recognition site. The data are consistent with the three-dimensional aspects of space-filling models of Schiff's bases evaluated in terms of multiple site binding.
