This study investigated the impact of the 9/11 attacks on substance use in Chicago, Illinois. The study design was a cross-sectional, audio-computer-assisted self-interview survey conducted in 2001 and 2002. Biological samples were also collected for toxicological analyses. Using a multistage area probability design, residents between the ages of 18 and 40 years were randomly selected. Compared to pre-9/11 interviewees, post-9/11 interviewees showed significantly less self-reported marijuana use, marijuana use per test results, and cocaine use per test results. In this study, a sustainable method employing concentrated sunlight to achieve environmental remediation of wastewater, contaminated by Ciprofloxacin antibiotic (CIP), is thoroughly investigated. A green ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite (NC) is used as a photocatalyst coating on glass to investigate the inactivation of CIP in water, in a flow-reactor configuration at small-prototype scale (10 liters/h, catalyst area 187.5 cm 2 ). ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 NC coatings were obtained by an in-situ thermal condensation process coupled with a green synthesis protocol and deposited on glass, via a simple drop casting method. Morphological and structural analyses of synthesized composites were performed with Fourier-Transform Infrared (FTIR) Spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-Dispersive X-ray (EDX) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, while optical properties were studied with Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS). The degradation of CIP was first tested at a lab scale under simulated sunlight and then studied under sunlight in a parabolic trough concentrator (PTC). Suitable degradation of CIP (100%) was observed at 210 min via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and the by-products were determined by Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectroscopy (LC-MS). Microbiological tests revealed the absence of antibacterial activity in CIP water treated with ZnO/g-C 3 N 4 NC photocatalyst against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Priestia megaterium. Our results directly demonstrate the effective inactivation of CIP with a process designed for sustainability both in terms of energy input (solar) and scalability of materials. Introduction: For adults involved with the criminal justice system who are reentering their communities post-incarceration, there is a large need for community-based substance use treatment. Little is known, however, about the types, availability, and benefits of programs targeting the reentry population in community settings that operate independently from the criminal justice system., Methods: We conducted a scoping review of community-based treatment programs for substance use among reentering justice-involved adults to examine the contemporary state of literature and identify research gaps. We searched four databases for peer-reviewed articles conducted in the United States and published between 2017 and 2021., Results: The final sample included 58 articles. Interventions varied, but the two most prominent were medications for opioid use disorder (35%) and peer support or social support interventions (22.4%). Studies were more likely to show positive impact on substance use outcomes than criminal justice outcomes. Themes were identified around participant characteristics, treatment delivery, and treatment benefits., Conclusions: Findings from this scoping review suggest that the range of evidence-based strategies for substance use treatment targeting the reentry population is growing, but there is a need for additional research that examines implementation, cost effectiveness, and racial/ethnic disparities., Competing Interests: The authors report there are no competing interests to declare concerning this work., (© 2024 The Author(s).)

Background: Despite the known benefits of non-sedentary behavior, physical activity, and protein and caloric intake to health and muscle mass, strength, and function, many older adults do not meet physical activity and dietary recommendations. A better understanding of the factors associated with sedentary behavior, physical activity and dietary self-management behaviors, and muscle outcomes (muscle mass, strength, and function) is needed, particularly among continuing care retirement community residents. The objective of this study was to examine the factors associated with sedentary behavior, physical activity and dietary self-management behaviors, and muscle outcomes among continuing care retirement community residents. It also aimed to determine whether sedentary behavior and physical activity and dietary self-management behaviors mediate the relationships between self-efficacy, goal congruence, aging expectations, social support, and muscle outcomes., Methods: A sample of 105 continuing care retirement community residents (age > 70 years) participated in this correlational, cross-sectional study. Questionnaires on pain, self-efficacy, goal congruence, aging expectation, social support, and daily protein and caloric intake were administered. Physical activity and sedentary behavior (ActiGraph wGT3X-BT), muscle mass (ImpediMed SFB7), muscle strength (Jamar Smart Digital Hand Dynamometer), and muscle function (Short Physical Performance Battery) were measured. Multiple regression, logistic regression, and mediation analyses were performed., Results: Low goal congruence predicted engagement in sedentary behavior and light physical activity. Higher levels of self-efficacy and social support were associated with increased likelihoods of achieving greater moderate physical activity and meeting daily recommendations for caloric intake, respectively. Self-efficacy and goal congruence predicted muscle function and strength. Moreover, sedentary behavior and achieving greater moderate physical activity were found to partially but significantly mediate the relationship between self-efficacy and muscle function., Conclusion: Future research should evaluate whether attempts to reduce sedentary behavior and promote physical activity and dietary self-management behaviors and muscle outcomes are more successful when modifications to the self-management process factors are also targeted., (© 2022. Green-synthesized materials and solar concentration technology for advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) offer important opportunities in water remediation by giving value to clean, renewable and potentially low-cost resources. Here, Zinc Oxide (ZnO) nanostructures (NSs) were prepared via a green synthesis method based on garlic bulbs (Allium Sativum) extract (ZnO-Green), resulting in crystalline (wurtzite) nanorods (NRs). ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were also chemically prepared through a standard co-precipitation (ZnO-Chem) for comparative solar photocatalytic (PC) studies. The green-synthesized ZnO NRs exhibited a favorable photocatalytic activity (PCA) in colloidal suspension for the methylene blue (MB) dye degradation upon exposure to concentrated sunlight. Comparison with the chemically synthesized ZnO results in almost equal degradations of 94% in optimal loading condition. To explore the possibility to use immobilized photocatalyst in heterogeneous condition, green-synthesized ZnO NRs coatings were fabricated and compared with a 135 nm thick ZnO thin film produced by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) (ZnO-PLD). PCA on MB degradation (120 min experiments) resulted in degradations of 69% and 73%, respectively, proving the feasibility of the immobilized photocatalyst approach. Finally, an economic analysis of the process shows that the combination of green-synthesis and concentrated sunlight significantly reduces costs, paving the way for large-scale photocatalytic wastewater remediation., (Copyright © 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Importance: Documenting Americans' stress responses to an unprecedented pandemic and their degree of adherence to CDC guidelines is essential for mental health interventions and policy-making., Objective: To provide the first snapshot of immediate impact of COVID-19 on Americans' stress, coping, and guideline adherence., Design: Data were collected from an online workers' platform for survey research (Amazon's Mechanical Turk) from April 7 to 9, 2020. The current data represents the baseline of a longitudinal study. Best practices for ensuring high-quality data were employed., Participants: Individuals who are 18 years of age or older, living in the USA, and English-speaking were eligible for the study. Of 1086 unique responses, 1015 completed responses are included., Setting: Population-based., Main Outcomes: Exposure to and stressfulness of COVID-19 stressors, coping strategies, and adherence to CDC guidelines., Results: The sample was 53.9% women (n = 547), with an average age of 38.9 years (SD = 13.50, range = 18-88), most of whom were White (n = 836, 82.4%), non-Hispanic (n = 929, 91.5%), and straight/heterosexual (n = 895, 88.2%); 40% were currently married (n = 407), and 21.6% (n = 219) were caregivers. About half (50.5%) endorsed having at least "mostly" enough money to meet their needs. Respondents' locations across the USA ranged from 18.5% in the Northeast to 37.8% in the South. The most commonly experienced stressors were reading/hearing about the severity and contagiousness of COVID-19, uncertainty about length of quarantine and social distancing requirements, and changes to social and daily personal care routines. Financial concerns were rated most stressful. Younger age, female gender, and caregiver status increased risk for stressor exposure and greater degree of stressfulness. The most frequently reported strategies to manage stress were distraction, active coping, and seeking emotional social support. CDC guideline adherence was generally high, but several key social distancing and hygiene behaviors showed suboptimal adherence, particularly for men and younger adults., Conclusions and Relevance: Americans have high COVID-19 stress exposure and some demographic subgroups appear particularly vulnerable to stress effects. Subgroups less likely to adhere to CDC guidelines may benefit from targeted information campaigns. these findings may guide mental health interventions and inform policy-making regarding implications of specific public health measures.

Recruitment and retention of low-income African Americans in clinical trials is challenging. This paper reports recruitment and retention strategies that yielded high rates for both in a clinical trial pilot to improve hypertension self-management among low-income African Americans. The study successfully recruited 96.7% (59 of 61 participants) within a seven month period. Retention rates for the 1, 3, and 6-month post-baseline assessment visits were 91.5%, 88.1%, and 83.1%, respectively. Recruitment and retention strategies include two grounded in previous literature: a culturally sensitive and diverse research team and use of incentives. Four additional strategies were developed for this study to meet the needs of the study site and participants, which included: study site collaboration; ongoing communications; responding to the clinical environment; and addressing participants' health literacy levels. Objective: Youths are using emergency departments (EDs) for behavioral health services in record numbers, even though EDs are suboptimal settings for service delivery. In this article, the authors evaluated a mobile crisis service intervention implemented in Connecticut with the aim of examining whether the intervention was associated with reduced behavioral health ED use among those in need of services., Methods: The authors examined two cohorts of youths: 2,532 youths who used mobile crisis services and a comparison sample of 3,961 youths who used behavioral health ED services (but not mobile crisis services) during the same fiscal year. Propensity scores were created to balance the two groups, and outcome analyses were used to examine subsequent ED use (any behavioral health ED admissions and number of behavioral health ED admissions) in an 18-month follow-up period., Results: A pooled odds ratio of 0.75 (95% confidence interval [CI]=0.66-0.84) indicated that youths who received mobile crisis services had a significant reduction in odds of a subsequent behavioral health ED visit compared with youths in the comparison sample. The comparable result for the continuous outcome of number of behavioral health ED visits yielded an incidence risk ratio of 0.78 (95% CI=0.71-0.87)., Conclusions: Using comparison groups, the authors provided evidence suggesting that community-based mobile crisis services, such as Mobile Crisis, reduce ED use among youths with behavioral health service needs. Replication in other years and locations is needed. Nevertheless, these results are quite promising in light of current trends in ED use.

Background: Drug overdose (OD) is the leading cause of accidental death in the United States and most of these deaths involve opioids. Despite research linking opioid abuse to mental illness, and evidence suggesting a large portion of opioid OD deaths are suicides, OD prevention strategies scarcely take into account mental health risk factors., Methods: We examined a sample of heroin or other opioid users enrolled in an intervention study to determine the prevalence of overdose, the prevalence of suicide attempts in overdose, and whether those with higher levels of psychiatric symptomatology would be more likely to experience a recent OD compared to other opioid users. By performing bivariate analyses and multivariate logistic regression models that controlled for poly drug use, criminal justice status, age, race, gender, and education, we evaluated the association of severe depression, severe anxiety, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and, psychosis and past three-month OD., Results: Just over 12% (45/368) of recent opioid users reported a recent overdose. Four of these recent overdose victims reported that the overdose was a suicide attempt. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that severe depression (odds ratio 2.46; 95% CI: 1.24, 4.89), PTSD (odds ratio: 2.77; 95% CI: 1.37-5.60) and psychosis (odds ratio 2.39; 95% CI: 1.10-5.15) were significantly associated with elevated odds for OD., Conclusions: Findings suggest systematic mental health symptom screening and connection to mental health treatment for opioid users-especially those identified with OD-may be critical for OD prevention., (© 2019 The Authors.)

Alcohol and other drug (AOD) misuse is highly prevalent among young adults and creates myriad long-term problematic social, economic, and health consequences. Current treatments aimed at preventing or alleviating AOD misuse have demonstrated fairly inconsistent and weak effectiveness and, thus, are far from a complete solution. In this review, we describe the current state of AOD interventions for young adults and present an alternative emotion regulation framework for understanding AOD use/misuse. We then describe implications of this framework for interventions to promote healthier emotion regulation to successfully reduce AOD use/misuse. In particular, we assert that mind⁻body approaches, such as meditation, distress tolerance, and yoga, may promote emotion regulation skills that allow young adults to manage their stressful experiences and distressing emotions without AOD use. We review the available literature on mind⁻body interventions targeting AOD use/misuse in young adults and offer suggestions for future intervention development and research.

This study investigates prior prescription opioid misuse in a cohort of heroin users whose progress was tracked in a treatment study conducted in the US from 2006 to 2010. Half of the sample misused prescription opioids ("other opiates/analgesics") prior to their onset of heroin misuse (POBs). We found that POBs were demographically younger and more likely to be white than other heroin users (OHUs). There were differences between the two groups with respect to the reporting of at least one year of regular use of substances and age of onset of substance use. POBs were more likely to report regular use, and earlier onset of use of several substances, mostly of the type potentially obtained via prescription. POBs were more persistent in their opioid use and more likely to suffer near-term elevated depressive symptoms compared with OHUs. These findings suggest that heroin addiction treatment may need to be tailored according to opioid misuse history.

Drosophila melanogaster is a promiscuous species that inhabits a large range of harsh environments including flooded habitats and varying temperature changes. To survive these environments, fruit flies have adapted mechanisms of tolerance that allow them to thrive. During exposure to anoxic stress, fruit flies and other poikilotherms enter into a reversible, protective coma. This coma can be manipulated based on controlled environmental conditions inside the laboratory. Here we utilize a common laboratory raised strain of D. melanogaster to characterize adaptation abilities to better understand coma recovery and survival limitations. Our goal is to mimic the fly's natural environments (wet anoxia) and relate findings to a typical gas induced environment (dry anoxia) that is commonly used in a laboratory. Despite the abundance of research regarding acute and chronic anoxic exposure and cold stress, the literature is lacking evidence linking anoxic stress with variable environmental conditions such as animal age and stress duration. We present novel ways to assess coma recovery and survival using readily available laboratory tools. Our findings suggest that younger age, exposure to colder temperatures and wet environments increase resistance to anoxic stress.

Some survey research has documented distress in respondents with pre-existing emotional vulnerabilities, suggesting the possibility of harm. In this study, respondents were interviewed about a personally distressing event; mood, stress, and emotional reactions were assessed. Two days later, respondents participated in interventions to either enhance or alleviate the effects of the initial interview. Results indicated that distressing interviews increased stress and negative mood, although no adverse events occurred. Between the interviews, moods returned to baseline. Respondents who again discussed a distressing event reported moods more negative than those who discussed a neutral or a positive event. This study provides evidence that, among nonvulnerable survey respondents, interviews on distressing topics can result in negative moods and stress, but they do not harm respondents.

Employing data from two Chicago-based household probability samples of men who have sex with men (MSM) implemented 5 years apart (the "UMHS 1997" and the "2002 MSM supplement" studies), we evaluated changes in risk behavior as well as the potential viability of two alternative perspectives for explaining these changes--risk management and safe-sex norm abandonment. We found significantly increased rates of unprotected insertive and receptive anal intercourse in the 2002 study. Sixty-eight percent of UMHS men reported having sex with partners having HIV positive or unknown status, compared with 38% of the MSM supplement men (p < .0001). Serosorting mediated and moderated the most extreme forms of risk behavior. Positive statistical associations between drug use and unprotected sex were stronger in the UMHS sample than in the MSM supplement. Findings suggesting that "risk management" strategies have shaped MSM behavior as it emerged in the early part of this decade have considerable implications for HIV prevention strategies.

WE ADMINISTERED DEBRIEFING PROBES TO gauge respondent discomfort in reaction to sensitive questions. These probes assessed respondents' own reactions to being asked to report on substance use (subjective discomfort), as well as their beliefs about the reaction of others (projective discomfort). We investigated whether a sample of men from the general population were more uncomfortable with questions about drug use than a sample of men who have sex with men (MSM) surveyed from the same city (Chicago). We also investigated whether those who disclosed drug use on the survey experienced higher levels of discomfort. Contrary to opinions often expressed as research ethics committee (REC) recommendations, questions about drug use do not generate much subjective discomfort. MSM did not differ from the general population with respect to subjective discomfort. General population males did, however, report higher levels of "drug specific" projective discomfort. Respondents disclosing recent drug use reported higher levels of subjective discomfort. Implications for the REC practice, researcher and REC education, and directions for future research are discussed.

Data were analyzed from a multistage probability household survey of over 600 adults, ages 18-40 from the city of Chicago conducted during 2001-2002. The survey employed audio computer-assisted self-interviews to obtain information about drug use. To investigate race/ethnicity differences in reporting validity, drug test results were compared with self-reports of past month drug use for cocaine, marijuana, and a combined indicator of both substances. The main indicators of validity were self-report sensitivity and concordance. Possible theoretical models accounting for potential cultural differences in reporting validity were discussed. Survey variables reflecting these potential explanations were examined as potential mediators of race/ethnicity differences in validity and as direct correlates of validity. Socioeconomic status was identified as one potential mediator. With this exception, race/ethnicity differences suggesting lower levels of marijuana and cocaine concordance for African Americans as compared with Whites were sustained after controlling for potential mediators. Methodological implications for epidemiological and health disparities research are discussed.

Objectives: We hypothesized that chronic stressors associated with an everyday social role (work) would interact with a traumatic macrosocial stressor (the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001) in predicting mental health status (during the fall of 2001)., Methods: We used mail surveys returned as part of wave 3 of a workplace cohort study, both before and after September 11, 2001, to assess decision latitude, sexual harassment, generalized workplace abuse, psychological distress, and alcohol use. We also used regression analyses to assess the main effect of September 11 and interactions between September 11 and stressors, after control for baseline mental health., Results: The main effect of September 11 on elevated alcohol use was significant for women but not for men. For women, work stressors significantly interacted with experiencing the events of September 11 to affect alcohol use and anxiety outcomes., Conclusions: Women experiencing chronic work stressors were most vulnerable to elevated psychological distress and alcohol use after September 11, 2001.

Objectives: The authors examined gender differences in drug use, self-reported dependence, and perceived need for treatment in a national sample of juvenile arrestees and detainees between the ages of nine and 18 years., Methods: A sample of 4,644 boys and girls, drawn from the Juvenile Drug Use Forecasting Survey from 1992 to 1995, was matched by sex within each of seven sites by survey year. In anonymous interviews, respondents were asked about their living arrangements, drug use, and need for drug treatment. Questions about drug use covered marijuana, cocaine, crack, heroin, crystal methamphetamine, amphetamines, and phencyclidine (PCP). Logistic regression was used to identify significant predictors of drug dependence and perceived need for treatment., Results: Girls were significantly more likely than boys to report dependence but were no more likely to report a need for treatment. Among those who reported current, frequent drug use, girls were significantly less likely than boys to report a need for treatment. Girls who reported having more severe drug problems were more likely than their male counterparts to report dependence and a need for treatment., Conclusions: The ways in which juvenile arrestees report drug dependence and need for treatment differ by gender. Clinicians should assess and reduce barriers to treatment perceived by girls in particular to engage them in services before their drug use escalates.
