Bird strike, volcanic rock, hailstones, micrometeoroids, or space debris can cause damage to aircraft and space vehicles, therefore their composite materials must have high impact resistance to maximize safety. In a 55% wt. CaCO3 compression molded short glass fiber polyester GFRP-BMC (bulk molded compound), shortening the nominal 6.4 mm fiber length formulation, by 30 min extended mixing, to 0.44 mm was found to increase Charpy impact values, auc, without a change in the compression molding equipment. Specimens were cut from square panels in a spiral configuration in conformity with ASTM D 6110-02 for orthotropic panels, the flow direction approximately radially outward from the charge. At a median-fracture probability of Pf = 0.50, extended mixing improved auc by 29%, from 7.43 to 9.59 kJm−2, and for each solidification texture angle, namely, 0 to 90 (random), 71, 45 and 18 deg, the auc increased by 25% (6.26 to 7.86 kJm−2), 18% (9.36 to 11.07 kJm−2), 35% (7.68 to 10.37 kJm−2), and 20% (6.96 to 8.36 kJm−2), respectively. This strengthening can be explained by an increased number of thermal compressive stress sites between the glass fiber and matrix due to a difference in the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) during cool-down, and shrinkage, with an increased number of spaces between fibers, |Sf| from 217 to approximately 2950 per mm3, enhancing impact energy.

Impact by hailstone, volcanic rock, bird strike, or also dropping tools can cause damage to aircraft materials. For maximum safety, the goal is to increase Charpy impact strength (auc) of a carbon-fiber-reinforced thermoplastic polyphenylene sulfide polymer (CFRTP-PPS) composite for potential application to commercial aircraft parts. The layup was three cross-weave CF plies alternating between four PPS plies, [PPS-CF-PPS-CF-PPS-CF-PPS], designated [PPS]4[CF]3. To strengthen, a new process for CFRP-PPS was employed applying homogeneous low voltage electron beam irradiation (HLEBI) to both sides of PPS plies prior to lamination assembly with untreated CF, followed by hot press under 4.0 MPa at 573 K for 8 min. Experimental results showed a 5 kGy HLEBI dose was at or near optimum, increasing auc at each accumulative probability, Pf. Optical microscopy of 5 kGy sample showed a reduction in main crack width with significantly reduced CF separation and pull-out; while, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron dispersive X-ray (EDS) mapping showed PPS adhering to CF. Electron spin resonance (ESR) of a 5 kGy sample indicated lengthening of PPS chains as evidenced by a reduction in dangling bond peak. It Is assumed that 5 kGy HLEBI creates strong bonds at the interface while strengthening the PPS bulk. A model is proposed to illustrate the possible strengthening mechanism.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants of concern have emerged and may pose a threat to both the efficacy of vaccines based on the original WA1/2020 strain as well as to natural immunity induced by infection with earlier SARS-CoV-2 variants. We sought to explore unanswered questions of how mutations in the spike of circulating SARS-CoV-2 variants, which have been shown to partially evade neutralizing antibodies, impact natural and vaccine-induced immunity. We adapted a Syrian hamster model of moderate to severe clinical disease for two variant strains of SARS-CoV-2: B.1.1.7 (α variant) and B.1.351 (β variant). We then assessed the protective efficacy conferred by either natural immunity from WA1/2020 infection or by vaccination with a single dose of the adenovirus serotype 26 vaccine Ad26.COV2.S. Primary infection with the WA1/2020 strain provided potent protection against weight loss and viral replication in lungs following re-challenge with WA1/2020, B.1.1.7, or B.1.351 14 days later. Ad26.COV2.S induced cross-reactive binding and neutralizing antibodies that were reduced against the B.1.351 strain compared with WA1/2020, but nevertheless still provided robust protection against B.1.351 challenge, as measured by weight loss and pathology scoring in the lungs. Taken together, these data support hamsters as a pre-clinical model to study protection against emerging variants of SARS-CoV-2 conferred by prior infection or vaccination.

Immune correlates of protection can be used as surrogate endpoints for vaccine efficacy. The nonhuman primate (NHP) model of SARS-CoV-2 infection replicates key features of human infection and may be used to define immune correlates of protection following vaccination. Here, NHP received either no vaccine or doses ranging from 0.3 - 100 μg of mRNA-1273, a mRNA vaccine encoding the prefusion-stabilized SARS-CoV-2 spike (S-2P) protein encapsulated in a lipid nanoparticle. mRNA-1273 vaccination elicited robust circulating and mucosal antibody responses in a dose-dependent manner. Viral replication was significantly reduced in bronchoalveolar lavages and nasal swabs following SARS-CoV-2 challenge in vaccinated animals and was most strongly correlated with levels of anti-S antibody binding and neutralizing activity. Consistent with antibodies being a correlate of protection, passive transfer of vaccine-induced IgG to naïve hamsters was sufficient to mediate protection. Taken together, these data show that mRNA-1273 vaccine-induced humoral immune responses are a mechanistic correlate of protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection in NHP.mRNA-1273 vaccine-induced antibody responses are a mechanistic correlate of protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection in NHP.

An edge-colored graph is properly connected if for every pair of vertices u and v there exists a properly colored uv-path (i.e. a uv-path in which no two consecutive edges have the same color). The proper connection number of a connected graph G, denoted pc(G), is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of G such that the resulting colored graph is properly connected. An edge-colored graph is flexibly connected if for every pair of vertices u and v there exist two properly colored paths between them, say P and Q, such that the first edges of P and Q have different colors and the last edges of P and Q have different colors. The flexible connection number of a connected graph G, denoted fpc(G), is the smallest number of colors needed to color the edges of G such that the resulting colored graph is flexibly connected. In this paper, we demonstrate several methods for constructing graphs with pc(G) = 2 and fpc(G) = 2. We describe several families of graphs such that pc(G) ≥ 2 and we settle a conjecture from [BFG+12]. We prove that if G is connected and bipartite, then pc(G) = 2 is equivalent to being 2-edge-connected and fpc(G) = 2 is equivalent to the existence of a path through all cut-edges. Finally, it is proved that every connected, k-regular, Class 1 graph has flexible connection number 2.

Strong adhesion between recyclable thermoplastic (TP) polymer and carbon fiber (CF) has always been highly sought after. Therefore, for an interlayered CF reinforced TP polypropylene (CFRTPP) composite composed of 3 sized CF plies, alternating between 4 PP sheets, designated [PP]4[CF]3, a process of activating CF plies directly on both sides with homogeneous low energy electron beam irradiation (EBI) under N2 gas, prior to lamination assembly and hot press of 4.0 MPa at 493 K for 3 min was carried out. Experimental results showed EBI dose of 43.2, 129, or 216 kGy significantly raised Charpy impact values, auc at all fracture probabilities, Pf. The 129 kGy dose appeared to be at or near optimum increasing auc 103%, 83%, and 65% at low-, median-, and high-Pf = 0.07, 0.50, and 0.93; while raising statistically lowest impact value, as at Pf = 0 calculated by 3-dimensional Weibull equation about 110%, indicating increased safety and reliability. It is assumed dangling bonds generated by the EBI rapidly form covalent bonds CF:C:O:C:PP and CF:C:C:PP at the interface, along with cross-linking in the PP near the CF. This is by charge transfer from CF to PP.

A literature review of up-to-date methods to strengthen Ti/carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) hybrid joints is given. However, there are little or no studies on Ti/CFRP joints by carbon fiber plug insert, which takes advantage of the extremely high surface adhesion area of ~6 μm CFs. Therefore, we cover the current status and review our previously published results developing hybrid joints by a CF plug insert with spot-welded Ti half-lengths to enhance the safety levels of aircraft fan blades. A thermoset Ti/CF/epoxy joint exhibited an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 283 MPa when calculated according to the rule of mixtures (RM) for the CF cross-section portion. With concern for the environment, thermoplastic polymers (TPs) allowed recyclability. However, a drawback is easy CF pull-out from difficult-to-adhere TPs due to insufficient contact sites. Therefore, research on a novel method of homogeneous low voltage electron beam irradiation (HLEBI) to activate a bare CF half-length prior to dipping in a TP resin was reviewed and showed that the UTS by the RM of Ti/EBCF/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and Ti/EBCF/polycarbonate (PC) joints increased 154% (from 55 to 140 MPa) and 829% (from 30 to 195 MPa), respectively, over the untreated sample. The optimum 0.30 MGy HLEBI prevented CF pull-out by apparently growing crystallites into the TP around the CF circumference, raising the UTS amount closer to that of epoxy.
