Abstract

The characteristics of a new method, the displacement-frequency representation, prompted the study of its use for the analysis of embolic blood flow signals. This paper reports the comparison of displacement-frequency and time-frequency methods with time domain methods, in the characterization of emboli. The study was performed on clinical signals derived from gaseous and particulate embolic events. The results obtained with the different approaches were compared. Abstract

Cerebral embolism represents a major cause of stroke. While embolic signal can be detected using transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound, there are limitations in this technique that makes it difficult to differentiate between gaseous and solid emboli and artifacts. In this paper, we report the application of emergent signal processing techniques in the analysis and classification of embolic signals. The Wavelet Neural Network (WNN) is used to approximate the signals and the parameters from the wavelets that best fit each signal are used as inputs to train a Neural Network (NN) for classifying them as normal signals, or gaseous or solid embolic signals. more...

Abstract

The presence of circulating cerebral emboli represents an increased risk of stroke. The detection of such emboli is possible with the use of a transcranial Doppler ultrasound (TCD) system. When a gaseous or particulate embolus passes through the TCD sample volume, it produces high intensity transient signals that are normally relatively easily detected. However, because most current TCD systems rely on human experts for the detection and classification of candidate events, this technique is not widely used. The appearance of a reliable automatic system, able to detect these signals and to classify them as originating from either a gaseous or solid source, would encourage the widespread utilization of this technique. This paper reports the application of new signal processing techniques to the analysis and classification of embolic signals. Abstract

In this paper, we investigate an advanced monitoring system for a neonatal intensive care unit The system intelligently detects abnormal neonatal cerebral Doppler ultrasound signals by means of principal component analysis and a non-normalised compensatory neuro-fuzzy rule based algorithm. Two hundred and ninety Doppler ultrasound signals were recorded from the anterior cerebral arteries of 40 normal full-term babies and 14 mature babies with intracranial pathology. The features of the normal and abnormal groups were extracted from the maximum velocity waveforms using a principal component method. The non-normalised compensatory neuro-fuzzy rule based algorithm yielded the highest predictive accuracy of 76.21%. Abstract

The design and test results of a four stage wet vapor turbine operating with slightly superheated inlet steam and expanding to 10% exit moisture are presented. High speed movies at 3000 frames per second of liquid movement on the pressure side and along the trailing edge of the last stator blade are discussed along with back lighted photographs of moisture drops as they were torn from the stator blade trailing edge. Movies at lower framing rates were also taken of the exit of the last rotating blade and the casing moisture removal slot located in line with the rotor blade shroud. Also moisture removal data are presented of casing slot removal at the exit of the third and fourth rotor blades and for slots located in the trailing edge of the last stator blade. Finally, the degradation of turbine thermodynamic performance due to condensation formation and movement is discussed. more...
