Abstract

Neutron capture cross sections are one of the most important nuclear inputs to models of stellar nucleosynthesis of the elements heavier than iron. The activation technique and the time-of-flight method are mostly used to determine the required data experimentally. Recent developments of experimental techniques allow for new experiments on radioactive isotopes. Monte-Carlo based analysis methods give new insights into the systematic uncertainties of previous measurements. We present an overview over the state-of-the-art experimental techniques, a detailed new evaluation of the $^{197}$Au(n,$\gamma$) cross section in the keV-regime and the corresponding re-evaluation of 63 more isotopes, which have been measured in the past relative to the gold cross section., Comment: 34 pages, 83 figs

Abstract

The neutron activation technique is a well established method to measure neutron capture cross sections relevant for the s-process. The 7Li(p,n) reaction at Ep = 1912 keV is often used as a neutron source since the energy distribution of the emitted neutrons closely resembles a Maxwell-Boltzmann spectrum of kBT = 25 keV, mimicking the 22Ne(α,n) phase in TP-AGB stars. The weak s-process, which takes place in massive stars, can reach energies up to kBT = 90 keV. Neutron spectra corresponding to a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution with kBT > 25 keV cannot be produced by the 7Li(p,n) reaction directly. We developed a method to obtain quasi-Maxwellian neutron capture cross sections over a wide energy range by combining a set of spectrum average cross sections measured at six different proton energies and distances between the lithium target and the sample. The measured spectrum averaged cross section can be used to calculate the Maxwellian-Averaged cross-section (MACS) from kBT = 25 keV to kBT = 90 keV. Over the last two years neutron capture cross sections on over 20 isotopes have been measured at Goethe University Frankfurt using this methodology. An overview of the current experimental method, challenges during data analysis and the first results are presented.

Abstract

The slow neutron capture process produces heavy elements in different stellar sites at different temperatures. Neutron capture cross sections for stellar temperatures between kBT = 5 keV and kBT = 100 keV are crucial for a quantitative understanding of the s-process abundance distribution. Over the last decade activation measurements were performed at the Goethe University Frankfurt to study cross sections at a temperature of kBT = 25 keV. We developed a new method to measure neutron capture cross sections at kBT = 6 keV.

Abstract

We measured the Coulomb dissociation of 16O into 4He and 12C within the FAIR Phase-0 program at GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt, Germany. From this we will extract the photon dissociation cross section 16O(α,γ)12C, which is the time reversed reaction to 12C(α,γ)16O. With this indirect method, we aim to improve on the accuracy of the experimental data at lower energies than measured so far. The expected low cross section for the Coulomb dissociation reaction and close magnetic rigidity of beam and fragments demand a high precision measurement. Hence, new detector systems were built and radical changes to the R3B setup were necessary to cope with the high-intensity 16O beam. All tracking detectors were designed to let the unreacted 16O ions pass, while detecting the 12C and 4He.

Abstract

The neutron activation method is well-suited to investigate neutron-capture cross sections relevant for the main s-process component. Neutrons can be produced via the 7Li(p,n) reaction with proton energies of 1912 keV at e.g. Van de Graaff accelerators, which results in a quasi-Maxwellian spectrum of neutrons corresponding to a temperature of kBT = 25 keV. However, the weak s-process takes place in massive stars at temperatures between 25 and 90 keV. Simulations using the PINO code [2] suggest that a Maxwellian spectrum for higher energies, e.g. kBT = 90 keV, can be approximated by a linear combination of different neutron spectra. To validate the PINO code at proton energies Ep ≠ 1912 keV, neutron time-of-flight measurements were carried out at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility (PIAF) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, Germany.

Abstract

About 50% of the elements heavier than iron are produced during the slow neutron capture process. This process occurs in different stellar sites at various energies. To understand the ongoing nucleosynthesis, the probability of a neutron capture for different temperatures and therefore for different stellar sites is essential. Activation experiments using the 7Li(p,n) reaction as neutron source were performed. At a temperature of kBT = 25 keV the cross sections were determined for 27Al, 37Cl and 41K. A new method was developed to perform activation experiments at even lower temperatures. For a proof of principle, the cross section for 64Ni was measured at kBT = 25 keV as well as for kBT = 6 keV. To study the impact of isomeric states at higher energies, activations of 181Ta were performed using two different proton energies.

19 pags., 16 figs., 8 tabs., We present the design, prototype developments and test results of the new time-of-flight detector (ToFD) which is part of the R3B experimental setup at GSI and FAIR, Darmstadt, Germany. The ToFD detector is able to detect heavy-ion residues of all charges at relativistic energies with a relative energy precision σΔE/ ΔE of up to 1% and a time precision of up to 14 ps (sigma). Abstract

The neutron activation method is well-suited to investigate neutron-capture cross sections relevant for the main s-process component. Neutrons can be produced via the 7Li(p,n) reaction with proton energies of 1912 keV at e.g. Van de Graaff accelerators, which results in a quasi-Maxwellian spectrum of neutrons corresponding to a temperature of kBT = 25 keV. However, the weak s-process takes place in massive stars at temperatures between 25 and 90 keV. Simulations using the PINO code [2] suggest that a Maxwellian spectrum for higher energies, e.g. kBT = 90 keV, can be approximated by a linear combination of different neutron spectra. To validate the PINO code at proton energies Ep ≠ 1912 keV, neutron time-of-flight measurements were carried out at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility (PIAF) at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt in Braunschweig, Germany.

Abstract

About 50% of the elements heavier than iron are produced during the slow neutron capture process. This process occurs in different stellar sites at various energies. To understand the ongoing nucleosynthesis, the probability of a neutron capture for different temperatures and therefore for different stellar sites is essential. Activation experiments using the 7Li(p,n) reaction as neutron source were performed. At a temperature of kBT = 25 keV the cross sections were determined for 27Al, 37Cl and 41K. A new method was developed to perform activation experiments at even lower temperatures. For a proof of principle, the cross section for 64Ni was measured at kBT = 25 keV as well as for kBT = 6 keV. To study the impact of isomeric states at higher energies, activations of 181Ta were performed using two different proton energies.

We measured the neutron capture cross sections of 69Ga and 71Ga for a quasi-stellar spectrum at kBT = 25 keV and a spectrum with a peak energy at 90 keV by the activation technique at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Geel, Belgium. Protons were provided by an electrostatic Van de Graaff accelerator to produce neutrons via the reaction 7Li(p,n). The produced activity was measured via the γ emission of the product nuclei by high-purity germanium detectors. We present preliminary results.

Abstract

The electron-capture process was studied for Xe54+ colliding with H2 molecules at the internal gas target of the Experimental Storage Ring (ESR) at GSI, Darmstadt. Cross-section values for electron capture into excited projectile states were deduced from the observed emission cross section of Lyman radiation, being emitted by the hydrogenlike ions subsequent to the capture of a target electron. The ion beam energy range was varied between 5.5 and 30.9 MeV/u by applying the deceleration mode of the ESR. Thus, electron-capture data were recorded at the intermediate and, in particular, the low-collision-energy regime, well below the beam energy necessary to produce bare xenon ions. The obtained data are found to be in reasonable qualitative agreement with theoretical approaches, while a commonly applied empirical formula significantly overestimates the experimental findings.

Abstract

The p nucleus 92Mo is believed to be mainly produced through photodisintegration reactions in type II supernovae. However, this production scenario cannot solely account for the observed solar relative isotopic abundance of 92Mo. Additional production scenarios have been suggested to explain this discrepancy. One of these scenarios could be the production of 92Mo in type Ia supernovae via a chain of proton-capture reactions. To verify this scenario, an accurate knowledge of the involved reaction rates is important. We measured the cross section of 90Zr(p,γ) reaction using an enriched 90Zr target by means of in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy in the energy range between 3.6MeV and 5.1MeV. Since the reactions 90Zr(p,γ) and 91Zr(p,n) produce the same nucleus, the contributions of both reactions have to be disentangled. This procedure is explained in this contribution in detail.

20. Nucleosynthesis of nuclei near the N=50 neutron shell closure

Abstract

Most of the elements heavier than iron are produced through neutron capture reactions in the s- and r -process. The overall path of the s-process is well understood and can be accurately reproduced in network simulations. However, there are still some neutron capture reactions of unstable nuclei involved in the s-process, which were not yet measured due to the difficulty in producing suitable targets. In those cases, theoretical models have to be used to estimate the missing cross section. One example is the branching point nucleus 86Rb, whose neutron capture cross section cannot be directly measured due to its short half life of 18.86 days. It is, however, also possible to measure its inverse, the 87Rb(g,n) reaction in order to obtain the 86Rb(n,g) cross section through the principle of detailed balance. Natural rubidium was irradiated with a quasi-monoenergetic photon beam in the energy range between 10.7 MeV and 16 MeV in order to investigate the photo-dissociation cross section of 87Rb. The results are presented in this thesis. Not only the total cross section of 87Rb(g,n), but also the partial production cross section of the ground and isomeric state of 84Rb through the 85Rb(g,n) reaction was measured. Not all isotopes can be reached via neutron capture reaction, and are therefore bypassed by the s- and r -process. These 35 proton-rich isotopes are called p-nuclei and are produced in the γ-process by a chain of photo-disintegration reactions in Type II supernovae. Network calculations of Type II supernova show that the γ-process can explain the production of most p-nuclei, but some – especially 92/94Mo and 96/98Ru – are heavily underproduced. While this could be the result of deficiencies in the corresponding stellar models or insufficient knowledge of the involved reaction rates, it is also possible that the missing p-nuclei are synthesized in other production scenarios. An alternative scenario for 92Mo is the production via a chain of proton capture reactions in Type Ia supernovae. One important reaction in this chain is the 90Zr(p,g) reaction. The reaction cross section was already measured several times, but the results were inconclusive. In the present work, the 90 Zr(p,g) reaction was measured using the in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy technique and the discrepancies between the data sets could be largely explained.

Abstract

XIII Nuclei in the Cosmos, 7-11 July, 2014 Debrecen, Hungary. As an alternative production scenario to the so-called g process, the most abundant p nucleus 92Mo may be produced by a chain of proton-capture reactions in supernovae type Ia. The reactions 90Zr(p,g) and 91Nb(p,g) are the most important reactions in this chain. We have measured the first reaction using high-resolution in-beam g-spectroscopy at HORUS, Cologne, Germany, to contribute to the existing experimental data base. So far, we only investigated the high-energy part of the Gamow window and the analysis is still in progress. Abstract

We measured the neutron capture cross sections of 69Ga and 71Ga for a quasi-stellar spectrum at kBT = 25 keV and a spectrum with a peak energy at 90 keV by the activation technique at the Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Geel, Belgium. Protons were provided by an electrostatic Van de Graaff accelerator to produce neutrons via the reaction 7Li(p,n). The produced activity was measured via the γ emission of the product nuclei by high-purity germanium detectors. We present preliminary results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The p nucleus 92Mo is believed to be mainly produced through photodisintegration reactions in type II supernovae. However, this production scenario cannot solely account for the observed solar relative isotopic abundance of 92Mo. Additional production scenarios have been suggested to explain this discrepancy. One of these scenarios could be the production of 92Mo in type Ia supernovae via a chain of proton-capture reactions. To verify this scenario, an accurate knowledge of the involved reaction rates is important. We measured the cross section of 90Zr(p,γ) reaction using an enriched 90Zr target by means of in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy in the energy range between 3.6MeV and 5.1MeV. Since the reactions 90Zr(p,γ) and 91Zr(p,n) produce the same nucleus, the contributions of both reactions have to be disentangled. This procedure is explained in this contribution in detail.
