Sustainable temporary architecture after a disaster includes temporary buildings designed to meet the emergency housing needs of disaster victims. This approach minimizes the use of waste and natural resources, reduces the environmental impact, and assumes an important responsibility to maintain the long-term ecological balance. Within the scope of this research, comprehensive and systematic results are presented by analyzing disaster issues with the "reuse" strategy, which has started to be frequently encountered in the current literature. The studies were scanned in the Web of Science and Scopus databases under the heading "Title/Abstract/Keywords," and the data were analyzed in detail. The findings indicate research trends in the literature and gaps for future research. The results highlight the innovative approach for sustainable post-disaster temporary architecture in the context of reuse strategies and present the field's challenges, limitations, and opportunities. This study is expected to help researchers, practitioners, experts, and politicians understand the evolutionary implications of disaster reuse strategies and develop other theoretical and practical initiatives that can be applied in this field. An earthquake and tsunami on 1 January 2024, caused extensive damage across Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. This study systematically examined the recovery process. It aimed to analyze the initial stages of recovery and highlight the lessons learned from these efforts. By collecting data from Ishikawa's post-disaster records, including government reports, reconstruction plans, local news, and observational records, we compiled the first "Early Reconstruction Timeline for Ishikawa". This timeline divided the recovery process into four phases: disaster occurrence and emergency response (January), reconstruction preparation (February–April), the beginning of early reconstruction (May–September), and the beginning of mid-reconstruction to the present (October–Present). Analysis of this timeline revealed several significant findings. First, Ishikawa's reconstruction efforts were structured into three key phases: 'Post-Disaster Relief and Emergency Response', 'Post-Disaster Reconstruction Preparation Period', and 'Infrastructure Reconstruction and Emergency Housing Construction Period'. This phased approach highlights an efficient and organized recovery process, distinguishing Ishikawa from other disaster-affected regions. Additionally, the housing reconstruction model showcased an innovative balance between emergency housing as a public resource and the specific needs of displaced residents. These findings not only establish a timeline-based framework for Ishikawa's reconstruction but also provide practical insights for guiding early post-disaster recovery efforts in various disaster-affected contexts worldwide. Background: Opioid-related overdose is a leading cause of death for criminal legal-involved individuals and, although naloxone distribution and medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) are effective means for reducing post-release overdose death risk, jail-based availability is limited. This case report describes the challenges faced by three Ohio communities as they implemented evidence-based practices (EBPs) in jails to combat post-release opioid overdose deaths. Method: We present case examples of how barriers were overcome to implement jail-based EBPs in three Ohio communities (two urban and one rural) as part of the HEALing Communities Study (UM1DA049417; ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT04111939). Of the 18 participating Ohio HEALing Communities Study counties, we highlight 3 communities for the novelty of their EBPs implemented, the challenges that they faced, and their rural/urban status. We present descriptive data regarding the EBPs that they implemented and discuss the challenges identified by HEALing Communities Study staff with first-hand experience facilitating their implementation. Results: Newly implemented interventions included overdose education and direct provision of naloxone to incarcerated individuals upon release (2 of 3 communities), initiating MOUD prior to release (3 of 3), linkage to ongoing MOUD treatment in the community (2 of 3), peer support-facilitated treatment retention efforts (2 of 3) and emergency housing (1 of 3) in the immediate post-incarceration period. Common challenges that emerged included skepticism about the need and feasibility of implementing EBPs to reduce overdose and death, lack of knowledge about the options available and whether external agencies may assist, and difficulty engaging stakeholders to overcome inertia. Conclusions: Creative flexibility, calm persistence, technical facilitation, and collaboration with community service providers were assets that helped these Ohio jails implement evidence-based strategies that combat the opioid epidemic and reduce the likelihood of post-incarceration overdose and death in a high risk, formerly incarcerated population. Housing is an important social determinant of health and wellbeing. Aotearoa New Zealand is an outlier in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development both in terms of its notably poor housing standards and the fact that it is one of the few countries where public housing has a better indoor environment and tenure security than private rentals. Our paper analyses the transition from emergency housing to public housing among individuals experiencing homelessness in Aotearoa New Zealand. Using linked de-identified microdata, we identified 31,761 individuals, who moved from emergency housing to public housing between 2016 and 2023. We found about four-fifths of those who transited from emergency housing to public housing required more than one application, and it took more than two months to settle them into public housing. We found a decrease in annual hospitalisation rates (0.50 to 0.29) and the annual rates of mental health outpatient use (5.8 to 3.7) after entering public housing, confirming the importance of stable and secure housing for health and wellbeing. Considering the health and wellbeing benefits observed, increasing affordable and accessible public housing stock in Aotearoa New Zealand is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Disasters in developing countries result in higher human and financial losses compared to global standards, with the death rate being 12 times higher than that of developed countries. Many experts attribute the failures in disaster management to the lack of a system for documenting and analyzing disaster management functions and not leveraging the experiences and lessons learned. This study employed a qualitative data collection approach, utilizing semi-structured interviews with managers, deputies, members of operational teams, and individuals affected by the disaster in the area. This research aims to explore the challenges, strengths, and lessons learned from the response to the Khoy earthquake in Iran. Results: After conducting 40 interviews and achieving data saturation, we extracted experiences and lessons learned to investigate the performance of responsible organizations in the 2022 Khoy earthquake. The obtained data were categorized into 8 categories and 39 sub-categories. These categories encompassed warning and calling forces, disaster assessment, disaster commanding, emergency housing, supply and distribution of items, organization, and guidance of public participation and charities, psychological support, logistics operations, monitoring, evaluation, documentation, information dissemination, and media management. ontainer settlements (CS) have been widely used as emergency and temporary dwellings in Europe due to the advantages of rapid deployment, cost-efficiency and relatively good living standards. Nevertheless, many authors emphasize the risks of disturbing the spatial order and stigmatization of residents that can lead to deepening the feeling of unrooting and generate substantial social problems. The purpose of the article is to demonstrate the main architectural characteristics of CS built in Ukraine to address internal migration caused by war. Multiple comparative case study includes 18 settlements built for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in three distinctive phases. The research focuses on the features critical to human comfort and life quality: settlement size, program, building typology, spatial arrangement, circulation, unit layout, degree of privacy. Results show that developments from 2015 and 2022 have similarities including basic program, size of dwelling units and density, but there are important differences related to the time allocated to designing and construction as well as expected period of operation. Basic recommendations for improving existing and planned developments are increasing the privacy by creating collective-private space outside and inside, developing a rich program, use existing greenery and new landscaping, providing good transit to the urban centres, using all-year weatherproof typologies and technical solutions suitable for long-term use. This fact must be considered in the process of designing new CS for IDPs and refugees, that are being planned and constructed in Ukraine and Europe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Why do some cities provide many emergency shelter beds while others do not? We interpret differences with respect to the supply of shelter beds as originating from alternative choices concerning a series of policy trade-offs. These trade-offs arise because of climate effects, prejudice, levels of poverty, and housing and labour market conditions affecting the rates of homelessness. Governments have policy levers they can adjust to respond to changes in most, if not all these conditions. One of these policy levers is the number of emergency shelter beds that are made available. But other policy responses are also possible. These include efforts to reduce poverty, policies designed to increase the stock of affordable housing, and policies to increase income support payments. Choosing to supply shelter beds over other policy responses reveals a preference for one set of societal outcomes over another. Using data describing conditions in 52 Canadian cities, we test six hypotheses describing why some communities choose to provide more homeless shelter beds than others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study reveals that the likelihood and diversity of postsecondary institutions providing basic needs programs are significantly influenced by institutional factors such as the institutions' organization and size. This study also indicates that Hispanic-Serving Institutions tend to provide emergency housing, which highlights a targeted response to specific community needs. In addition, the analysis indicates that the presence of students with financial needs is linked to the availability of food pantry services, suggesting a strategic approach to address student welfare. The findings from this study provide critical insights into how institutional characteristics influence the provision and variety of basic needs services. These conclusions not only underscore the pivotal role of such services in supporting the overall well-being and academic success of students but also indicate institutional factors that support the formal implementation of a variety of basic needs programs to meet diverse student needs. In the era of the climate emergency and different pandemics, systems that can provide an immediate response to housing needs are required. This paper aims to evaluate the use of fibre-reinforced plastic polymers (FRPs) to satisfy this need. In particular, a modular emergency housing system that utilises FRPs for structures and cladding is proposed, which proves adaptable to both different uses and different kinds of temporary or permanent buildings. By adapting modular emergency housing to different contexts, developing an integrated design process (IDP) and building information modelling (BIM) methodology, this research aims to provide innovations for the the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector, including FRPs, through a digitised approach, applied also to an experimental case study. A pilot unit of the modular emergency housing system, a nearly zero-energy building (nZEB), is described in detail, while laboratory tests are reported. Construction considerations confirm the sustainability and highlight the adaptability of the modular system to different housing needs conditions, justifying the possible future development of supply chain industrialisation supported by the presented methodology. As a result of the latest neoliberal policies carried out in the urban area, cities have grown unevenly, fragmented and disintegrated. This work presents the development of a theoretical and methodological instrument for making political decisions regarding the origin, growth and densification of the popular habitat in La Plata City. Vacant lands susceptible to being occupied have been identified based on the study of their accessibility, basic infrastructure services, equipment, recreational spaces and environmental conditions (flood risk). As an example of application, a strategic urban integration and insertion project for emergency housing has been proposed in a representative neighborhood on the periphery of La Plata. As a result of this specific intervention, the possible incorporation of 35 households and 4 buildings (equipment according to need) in the already urbanized area has been defined. Conclusively, it has been observed that the identification of strategic areas for the socio-territorial integration of popular neighborhoods is possible. Additionally, specific guidelines for housing insertion have been defined, either in case of emergency (for example, in the event of a climate catastrophe) or due to recurring need regarding the current housing deficit. This article presents a methodology that combines methods of architectural representation with qualitative social science research to study housing, particularly, home-based work. Studies of home-based work have specialised in discussing the complexities of sharing the domestic and productive spaces. However, the literature shows that there is a methodological gap in approaching these complexities. Specifically, both social science and architectural techniques separately fail to represent the relationships and conflicts between these two spheres. This article addresses the following question: how to achieve a representation that corresponds to the complexity of the relationship between domestic and productive space in dwellings? To answer this question, our methodology combines the techniques of architecture (sketches, plans, maquettes and axonometries) and social science (observation, interviews and focus groups) to capture the relationship between domestic (reproductive) and work (productive) spaces in households. The method presents three scales of analysis: the micro (household), the meso (part of the neighbourhood) and the macro (neighbourhood). These different scales of analysis were applied in two case studies to test the performance of the method. These are the transitional emergency neighbourhoods built after the 2015 floods in Atacama (Chile). These cases were selected because, for many families, housing is also a place of income generation, and often emergency housing is a place of work, contributing to the economic recovery process after a disaster. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, motels have become increasingly used as sites for emergency accommodation in Aotearoa New Zealand. Consequently, children now reside in motel rooms intended for seven day emergency stays for much longer periods of time. Ten key-informant interviews were conducted with service providers supporting children residing in motels in the Waikato region. Thematic analysis generated five themes relating to child wellbeing: 1.) Living conditions, 2.) Physical and psychological safety, 3.) Inappropriateness of existing service models, 4.) Disjointed collaboration between service providers, and 5.) Imagining emergency motels as a “site to build strengths”. The findings suggest the motel environment restricted children’s access to nutrition, safe physical activity and health care. In addition, proximity to adult residents could increase exposure to adverse experiences. Participants suggested creative ways to collaborate and use motel facilities to build family strengths. However ultimately, long stays in emergency housing motels create an environment where systemic barriers to child health, development and education are likely to be entrenched rather than alleviated. Initiatives that significantly reduce the time children spend in motels, and appropriate support for children in these contexts are urgently required to prevent widening health inequities for the “motel generation”.

Background: Housing insecurity can be understood as experiencing or being at risk of multiple house moves that are (1) not through choice and (2) related to poverty. For example, due to short-term private rental tenancies, temporary or emergency housing, and homelessness. Housing insecurity has grown due to recent trends in the cost and availability of housing. The quality, affordability and stability of housing have all been shown to impact children’s health and well-being. However, the pathways linking housing and child health and well-being are complex and poorly understood. Objectives: To identify, appraise and synthesise research evidence that explores the relationship between housing insecurity and the health and well-being of children and young people. Data sources: MEDLINE via Ovid (searched 8 April 2022), EMBASE via Ovid (searched 8 April 2022), PsycINFO via Ovid (searched 8 April 2022). Review methods: We undertook a systematic review synthesising qualitative data. We searched databases, reference lists and United Kingdom grey literature. We extracted and tabulated key data from the included papers, and appraised study quality. We synthesised the data qualitatively into an a priori conceptual framework using best-fit framework synthesis combined with thematic synthesis, and generated logic models to highlight links between specific exposures, impacts and outcomes. Results: We included 59 studies and identified four populations: those experiencing housing insecurity in general (40 papers); associated with domestic violence (nine papers); associated with migration status (13 papers) and those forced to relocate due to demolition (two papers). Most published studies had an overall assessment of moderate-high quality, and most grey literature originated from known and valued sources. Housing insecurity took many forms and resulted from several, often inter-related, situations, including being evicted or having a forced move, living in temporary accommodation, exposure to problematic behaviour, overcrowded/poor-condition/unsuitable property, and making multiple moves. The resultant housing insecurity had multiple impacts, including school-related, psychological, financial and family well-being impacts, long-distance travel to attend school and see friends, living in a poor-condition or unsuitable property, all of which could further exacerbate housing insecurity. These experiences impacted health and well-being, in terms of mental health problems (often manifesting physically/ behaviourally) and physical health problems related to poor housing conditions. Some factors lessened the impact of housing insecurity, including friendship and support, staying at the same school, having hope for the future and protective parenting. The negative impacts of housing insecurity on health and well-being may be compounded by specific situations and life circumstances, such as escaping domestic violence, migration status, or a forced relocation due to housing demolition. Limitations: Many accounts were from parents or other informants, and more data directly from children and young people may give a more nuanced picture. Likewise, there was little information relating to outcomes, and it is difficult to know whether the current evidence has captured all relevant outcomes, and the links from impacts to health and well-being outcomes are less well understood. The complexity and diversity of the data added additional challenges to the synthesis process. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that policies should focus on reducing housing insecurity among families, particularly in relation to reducing eviction, improving and reducing the need for temporary accommodation, minimum requirements for property condition, and support to reduce multiple moves and moves far from families’ desired location. Those working with children and families experiencing housing insecurity should give them optimal choice and control over situations that affect them. Future work: Future qualitative research should focus explicitly on the health and well-being of children and young people experiencing housing insecurity, and how it links with the impacts identified in the current review, foregrounding the accounts of children and young people themselves, including specific groups of young people who are likely to be marginalised. Background: Heart failure is common and is associated with high rates of hospitalization. Home care support clinics/hospitals (HCSCs) and enhanced HCSCs were introduced in Japan in 2006 and 2012, respectively. Objective: This study aimed to examine the effect of post-discharge care by conventional or enhanced HCSCs on readmission, compared with general clinics. Design: Retrospective cohort study using the Japanese nationwide health insurance claims database. Participants: Participants were ≥65 years of age, admitted for heart failure and discharged between July 2014 and August 2015 and received a home visit within a month following the discharge (n=12,393). Main Measures: The exposure was the type of medical facility that provides post-discharge home healthcare: general clinics, conventional HCSCs, and enhanced HCSCs. The primary outcome was all-cause readmission for 6 months after the first visit; the incidence of emergency house calls was a secondary outcome. We used a competing risk regression using the Fine and Gray method, in which death was regarded as a competing event. Key Results: At 6 months, readmissions were lower in conventional (38%) or enhanced HCSCs (38%) than general clinics (43%). The adjusted subdistribution hazard ratio (sHR) of readmission was 0.87 (95% CI: 0.78–0.96) for conventional and 0.86 (0.78–0.96) for enhanced HCSCs. Emergency house calls increased with conventional (sHR: 1.77, 95% CI:1.57–2.00) and enhanced HCSCs (sHR: 1.93, 95% CI: 1.71-2.17). Conclusions: Older Japanese patients with heart failure receiving post-discharge home healthcare by conventional or enhanced HCSCs had lower readmission rates, possibly due to compensation with more emergency house calls. Conventional and enhanced HCSCs may be effective in reducing the risk of rehospitalization. Further studies are necessary to confirm the medical functions performed by HCSCs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cities are complex and constantly evolving systems where changing social needs have always reshaped the built environment. Considering recent evolutionary trends in housing emergencies, amplified by the COVID-19 pandemic, and environmental sustainability goals, a rethinking of the building heritage is fundamental. This article aims to promote the conversion of buildings designed initially for nonresidential uses as a process and project strategy based on energy efficiency and a holistic and integrated vision of the circular economy. The methodological approach is based on two main phases: definition of evaluative parameters for the potential reuse of a building, and integration of the evaluation system in a BIM and GIS environment. The result is a tool for rapid automatic pre-evaluation of the potential conversion of a building into a residential space. Applying the developed methodology allows for a practical approach to the significant issue of sustainable construction, with particular attention to energy improvement and the reduction of environmental impact related to the construction of new buildings. The originality of the contribution lies in the systematization of various digital technologies to provide fundamental support for managing and transforming the varied and widespread unused real estate assets in a state of abandonment and degradation. In this study, we consider the patient, provider, and public health repercussions of San Francisco's (SF) COVID-related response to homelessness using tourist hotels to house people experiencing homelessness (PEH). We describe the demographics, medical comorbidities, and healthcare utilization patterns of a subset of PEH who accessed the shelter-in-place (SIP) hotel sites during the 2020–2021 pandemic. We focus on how SIP hotels impacted connection to outpatient care and higher-cost emergency utilization. Our mixed methods study integrates qualitative and quantitative data to consider the impact of this temporary housing initiative among a medically complex cohort in a time of increased morbidity and mortality related to substance use. We found that temporary SIP housing increased outpatient care and reduced higher-cost hospital utilization. Our results can inform the future design and implementation of integrated supportive housing models to reduce mortality and promote wellness for PEH. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: This study explores the benefits and challenges of pet ownership for people experiencing crisis situations, from the perspectives of clients from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals New South Wales (RSPCA NSW) Community Programs. Our findings were that human–animal bonds are highly valued by people experiencing crisis situations, and can affect people's ability to seek help or refuge, and to help people recover after a crisis. Human–animal bonds provided companionship and catalyzed interpersonal connections, which improved mental health and coping during a crisis. However, separation from a pet can cause stress and anxiety, which can dissuade pet owners from seeking help. Programs such as the RSPCA NSW Community Programs address pet safety and remove cost barriers, providing relief and encouraging help-seeking. Human–animal bonds provided structure and companionship, which by improving mental health, aided in recovery, post-crisis. Additionally, the absence of a pet post-crisis negatively affects people's recovery. Human–animal bonds, by providing social support, have been shown to improve the health and wellbeing of pet owners, especially those experiencing a crisis situation. The human–animal bond for people in crisis situations is complex and multifaceted, as it has shown to improve health, whilst it can also discourage people from seeking help, due to fears of leaving their pet behind. The purpose of the study is to capture and to assess the role of the human–animal bond for people in crisis situations. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with pet owners involved in the RSPCA NSW Community Programs (n = 13) in 2021 and 2022. The findings of the study indicate that the human–animal bond is highly valued by people experiencing crisis situations, that the human–animal bonds can affect people's ability to seek help or refuge, and that the human–animal bond helps people to recover after a crisis. The findings suggest that community crisis support services, prison systems, hospital systems, emergency housing, and government legislation should recognize and aim to preserve this bond to provide the best help for people experiencing crisis situations. This study examines the results of an online survey of Fukushima residents on their impressions of the reconstruction process ten years after the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. It aims to gauge the levels of approval and satisfaction that participants have with support for survivors, housing and community reconstruction, industrial and livelihood regeneration, efforts to decontaminate "difficult to return" zones, measures taken to counter harmful rumors, and the use of the reconstruction budget. The key findings are that many participants found little to be satisfied with after the disaster and that the most critical groups were those who had been directly affected by the disaster and older people. Actions that were seen as successful included provision of public emergency housing, the use of the media in counteracting rumors, the opening of major transport links, and efforts to restore agricultural activities. Going forward, the participants were most concerned about whether support for isolated elderly people would continue and whether long-term medical, emotional, and financial support would continue for survivors. In Japan, natural disasters have historically caused massive damage, and the importance of emergency temporary housing is increasing. In this paper, the summer thermal environment at the Shirahata temporary housing site in Kousa Town was assessed. The site was constructed following the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquake. The site was improved by applying a design methodology called "Kumamoto Type D," "D" stands for "Default & Design." Field measurements and computational fluid dynamics simulations were conducted to investigate the influence of the building arrangement on the outdoor thermal environment for the Kumamoto Type D layout. The results indicated that the impact of wind was reduced using this layout. However, when the surface temperature in the parking lot and other areas increased, hot air could be transmitted to the site, even under reduced wind conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Natural and human-induced disasters have become more frequent in recent years, and this has increased the need for effective, high-quality, quick, easy-to-assemble, and affordable emergency housing solutions. The purpose of this study is to create a knowledge base for researchers and developers working in the structural and structural-related fields to favour the development of relevant and most appropriate assistance for emergency housing that could meet the anticipated future rising demands. The focus of the research is emergency shelters for the Global South, an area of research sparsely addressed within the structural-related field. The emergency sheltering process has so many variabilities in its duration and unfolding that many agencies suggest relying on the resilience of those in need. This can have dramatic human repercussions and eventually further burden natural resources. To reach its goal, the paper shifts the attention to information from field actors and global agencies and employs a multiple case studies approach, conducted through a grounded theory methodology. The process has allowed identification of a list of structural-related issues faced by users, acting as codes in the grounded theory methodology, the associated challenges for authorities in addressing them, acting as categories, and some ideal solutions, derived from the theoretical coding. The research concludes that the challenges of the sheltering process shall be read through sustainability housing indicators and that the constraints of the former may be stimuli to the application of innovative and more inclusive procedures within the latter. The study fosters a new theoretical approach in post-disaster housing, which encourages more interdisciplinary collaborations and empirical investigations that will potentially enhance post-disaster housing sustainability and facilitate the development of emergency shelter construction schemes. Featured Application: A new heat transfer calculation method for ground-coupled floors was established. This method was applied particularly to temporary emergency housing. Results showed it was more efficient than the finite volume method. The effects of initial soil temperature were not ignorable in hot and cold climates. Insulation could slow down but not prevent the heat release of soil. Generally, ground-coupled floor heat transfer is supposed as annual periodic, which is reasonable for conventional buildings. However, for emergency housing with a short life cycle, the influence of initial soil temperature needs to be considered. In a previous study, the Wiener–Hopf technique was introduced to solve the two-dimensional transient heat transfer equation with mixed Dirichlet and Robin boundary conditions. Based on that, an analytical solution of the dynamic heat transfer equation with initial soil temperature conditions was obtained. Since the solution was in the form of a double integral, its numerical evaluation method was also analyzed to improve computational efficiency. The accuracy and efficiency of the solution were validated by the finite volume method. Then, the effects of initial soil temperatures in different seasons, soil heat conductivities, and floor insulation on ground-coupled heat transfer were discussed. Results showed significant temperature differences between the current solution and the annual periodic solutions (long-time solutions), especially in hot and cold climates. Moreover, the larger the thermal capacity of the soil, the bigger temperature differences occurred. Therefore, this study is expected to provide a theoretical foundation for the indoor environment prediction and optimization design of emergency temporary housing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
