Abstract

Flare frequency distributions represent a key approach to addressing one of the largest problems in solar and stellar physics: determining the mechanism that counter-intuitively heats coronae to temperatures that are orders of magnitude hotter than the corresponding photospheres. It is widely accepted that the magnetic field is responsible for the heating, but there are two competing mechanisms that could explain it: nanoflares or Alfv\'en waves. To date, neither can be directly observed. Nanoflares are, by definition, extremely small, but their aggregate energy release could represent a substantial heating mechanism, presuming they are sufficiently abundant. One way to test this presumption is via the flare frequency distribution, which describes how often flares of various energies occur. If the slope of the power law fitting the flare frequency distribution is above a critical threshold, $\alpha=2$ as established in prior literature, then there should be a sufficient abundance of nanoflares to explain coronal heating. We performed $>$600 case studies of solar flares, made possible by an unprecedented number of data analysts via three semesters of an undergraduate physics laboratory course. This allowed us to include two crucial, but nontrivial, analysis methods: pre-flare baseline subtraction and computation of the flare energy, which requires determining flare start and stop times. We aggregated the results of these analyses into a statistical study to determine that $\alpha = 1.63 \pm 0.03$. Abstract

Kiwifruit is New Zealand’s major horticulture crop. A challenge that exists for the New Zealand kiwifruit industry in emerging tropical markets is maintaining fruit quality during marketing. In Asia and the Middle East, high ambient temperatures (> 30 °C) are often prevalent. The domination of traditional fruit marketing practices in these regions results in fruit exposure to these conditions. Understanding of fruit postharvest responses to high ambient temperatures is limited. In this thesis, a supply chain survey was conducted in India and Singapore, where kiwifruit at edible ripeness were found to be exposed to temperatures > 30 °C and ethylene concentrations as high as 150 nL L-1 during retail. Back in the laboratory, kiwifruit were exposed to simulated tropical conditions, where 12 h of exposure to 40 °C resulted in significant changes in fruit physiology as evidenced by rapid respiratory decline. The findings from this initial study indicated that 40 °C exposure may have a lethal impact on kiwifruit whilst 33 °C may not.--Shortened abstract

Abstract

Kiwifruit chilling injury (CI) damage occurs after long-term exposure to low temperature. A non-destructive approach to detect CI injury was tested in the present study, using a laser backscattering image (LBI) technique calibrated with 56 liquid phantoms for providing absorption coefficient (µa) and reduced scattering coefficient (µs’). Calibration of LBI resulted in a true-positive (TP) classification of 91.5% and 65.6% of predicted µs’ and µa, respectively. The optical properties of ‘SunGold™’and ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit were analysed at 520 nm with a two-step protocol capturing pre-classification according to the LBI parameters used in the calibration and estimation with the Farrell equation. Severely injured kiwifruit showed white corky tissue and water soaking, reduced soluble solids content and firmness measured destructively. Non-destructive classification results for ‘SunGold™’ showed a high percentage of TP for severe CI of 92% and 75% using LBI parameters directly and predicted µa and µs’ after pre-classification, respectively. The classification accuracy for severe CI ‘Hayward’ kiwifruit with LBI parameter was low (58%) and with µa and µs’ decreased further (35%), which was assumed to be due to interference caused by the long trichomes on the fruit surface.

Abstract

A key component of the success of the New Zealand kiwifruit industry is the consistent provision of high-quality produce. The projected increase in kiwifruit volumes necessitates the widening of harvest and marketing windows. Two different kiwifruit export marketing strategies are currently deployed: i) Early season fruit are delivered for immediate sale (‘KiwiStart’), ii) later season fruit have a maturity that enables extended postharvest cool storage (‘MainPack’). These marketing strategies determine harvest criteria and subsequent postharvest management practices employed in the supply cool chain. The introduction of new cultivars, e.g. ‘SunGold™’, necessitates a re-evaluation of the postharvest ripening and storage practices, tuning the requirements to the specific responses of each cultivar. Since there is minimal information on ethylene related responses for ‘SunGold™’, research to develop a fundamental understanding of these responses is crucial for optimal management and performance of the product in the market. The purpose of this PhD is to determine the effect of industry-relevant ethylene concentrations on ‘SunGold™’ quality progression (firmness and soluble solids content (SSC)). With that understanding, a semi-mechanistic model for the simultaneous description of firmness decline and soluble solids increase under dynamic temperature conditions and ethylene concentrations was developed.--Shortened abstract

11. Home gardening as a panacaea: A case study of South Tarawa

Abstract

The Republic of Kiribati is a small, highly infertile Pacific Island nation and is one of the most challenging locations to attempt to support dense urban populations. Kiribati, like other nations in the Pacific, faces an urban future where food insecurity, unemployment, waste management and malnutrition will become increasing issues. Homegardening is suggested as one way to address many of these problems. However, the most recent study on agriculture production in urban centres in Kiribati shows that, in general, intensive cultivation of homegardens is not a common practice. This disparity between theory and practice creates an opportunity to re-examine homegardening in Kiribati and, more broadly, in the Pacific. This paper examines the practice of homegardening in urban centres in Kiribati and explores reasons why change has or has not occurred through interviews with homegardeners and government/donor representives. Results show that homegardening has increased significantly in the past five years, largely because of the promotion of homegardens and organic composting systems by donor organisations. While findings further endorse homegardening as an excellent theoretical solution to many of the problems that confront urban settlements in Kiribati and the Pacific, it raises additional questions regarding the continuation of homegarden schemes beyond donor support programmes.

12. A future in the past : urban agroforestry systems in future planned urban settlements in Kiribati, a Pacific case study

Abstract

In the last 50 years, Pacific Island Countries (PICs) have experienced unprecedented levels of urban development. During this time, the general failure of traditional industrialised planning models to be successfully adapted in PICs has resulted in the need to explore alternative models for urban settlement in the Pacific. In this way, the incorporation of tree based agricultural systems (agroforestry) into urban settlements has considerable potential to address many of the problems associated with rapid urbanisation such as food security, waste management, environmental degradation and unemployment. Research in the Pacific has already shown how urban agroforestry systems can improve food security, increase access to nutritional foods, recycle organic waste, create employment and protect fragile ecological systems. However, in Pacific towns and cities urban agroforestry systems are rarely developed beyond a homegarden setting. The growth of urban centres in the Republic of Kiribati is an example of the challenges confronting many rapidly urbanising PICs. With infertile soils, severely restricted land and water resources and an emerging economy, Kiribati is a developing nation where sustainable development faces some of its greatest challenges. Due to rapidly expanding urban populations, the Kiribati Government is currently investigating the development of future planned urban settlements. In such a scenario, potential exists to extend urban agroforestry systems beyond a homegarden setting and explore alternative models for sustainable urbanisation in the Pacific. Abstract

Apples stored onshore in Australia and New Zealand, are maintained at optimal storage conditions with the aid of low temperatures; controlled atmospheres (CA) and new technologies that retard the production or effect of ethylene (AVG and 1-MCP respectively). These technologies allow distribution of the highest quality apples to local and export markets on a year round basis. However, during distribution, maintenance of optimal storage conditions may be lost due to refrigeration system breakdown, operational constraints or management decisions. This thesis quantifies the influence of commercially realistic breaks in optimal storage conditions (temperature and CA) on fruit physiology and quality, both at the time of the break and in subsequent optimal storage conditions. The ‘Cripps Pink’ (‘Pink Lady™’) apple cultivar was chosen for consideration in this thesis because it is a high value cultivar that is of considerable importance to the Australian apple industry. The knowledge of the behaviour of ‘Cripps Pink’ apples in coolstorage conditions (in air and CA) was confirmed through comparison of physiological and quality change behaviour of fruit from three harvests collected in this research and those reported recently by other authors. The investigation of the influence of breaks in temperature control during storage in air at 0°C, revealed that preclimacteric apples exposed to a break in temperature control, were advanced towards the establishment of the climacteric. Postclimacteric apple, responded by doubling ethylene production a short time after return to coolstorage. Harvest maturity, timing of break during coolstorage, length of break of temperature control and multiple breaks in temperature control, had little influence on the increase ethylene production response. Quality factors (firmness, background hue angle, and titratable acidity) were all reduced as a result of exposure to warmer temperatures, but on return to coolstorage temperatures rates of loss in
