The ID32 Soft X-ray Beamline line is an ESRF upgrade beamline for X-ray absorption (XAS) and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) spectroscopic studies. It was opened to Users in October 2014 and provides polarised soft X-rays in the 400–1600 eV energy range. It has two branches: One branch has been designed for X-ray magnetic dichroism experiments, both linear (XMLD) and circular (XMCD), with high sensitivity, reproducibility, flexibility, user friendliness and the capability for fast energy scanning. The X-ray beam is available in two experimental areas, one with a dedicated superconducting high field magnet and a sample preparation facility, the second area being open for User instruments. The other branch is dedicated to very high energy resolution Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering experiments with a combined resolving power up to 30 000 around 930 eV. A scattering arm which is continuously variable under UHV vacuum over 100 degrees and a four-circle sample goniometer allows accurate positioning of the sample to enable 3D mapping of q space. Combined with the possibility of polarisation analysis of the outgoing photons the beamline provides a state-of-the-art soft X-ray RIXS facility.

Iron phthalocyanines (FePc) adsorbed onto a Ag(110) substrate self-assemble into different monolayer phases going from rectangular to different oblique phases, with increasing molecular density. We have investigated the oxygen uptake capability of the different phases and their associated magneto-structural changes. Our study combines scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. STM measurements reveal that the oxygenation reaction of the FePc/Ag(110) generally involves a displacement and a rotation of the molecules, which affects the electronic state of the Fe centers. The oxygen intercalation between FePc and the substrate is greatly obstructed by the steric hindrance in the high-density phases, to the point that a fraction of oblique phase molecules cannot change their position after oxidizing. Depending on the oxidation state and adsoption geometry, the STS spectra show clear differences in the Fe local density of states, which are mirrored in the XAS and XMCD experiments. Particularly, XMCD spectra of the oxidized phases reflect the distribution of FePc species (nonoxygenated, oxygenated-rotated, and oxygenated-unrotated) in the different cases. Sum rule analysis yields the effective spin (mseff) and orbital (mL) magnetic moments of Fe in the different FePc species. We investigate the spin relaxation of Ho single atom magnets on $\mathrm{MgO}/\mathrm{Ag}(100)$ as a function of temperature and magnetic field. We find that the spin relaxation is thermally activated at low field, while it remains larger than 1000 s up to 30 K and 8 T. This behavior contrasts with that of single molecule magnets and bulk paramagnetic impurities, which relax faster at high field. Combining our results with density functional theory, we rationalize this unconventional behavior by showing that local vibrations activate a two-phonon Raman process with a relaxation rate that peaks near zero field and is suppressed at high field. Our work shows the importance of these excitations in the relaxation of axially coordinated magnetic atoms.

The high-field magnet endstation for X-ray magnetic dichroism experiments at the ESRF soft X-ray beamline ID32 is presented., A new high-field magnet endstation for X-ray magnetic dichroism experiments has been installed and commissioned at the ESRF soft X-ray beamline ID32. The magnet consists of two split-pairs of superconducting coils which can generate up to 9 T along the beam and up to 4 T orthogonal to the beam. It is connected to a cluster of ultra-high-vacuum chambers that offer a comprehensive set of surface preparation and characterization techniques. The endstation and the beam properties have been designed to provide optimum experimental conditions for X-ray magnetic linear and circular dichroism experiments in the soft X-ray range between 400 and 1600 eV photon energy. User operation started in November 2014.

We perform on-surface synthesis of single-ion molecular magnets on an Ag(111) surface and characterize their morphology, chemistry, and magnetism. The first molecule we synthesize is TbPc2 to enable comparison with chemically synthesized and subsequently surface adsorbed species. We demonstrate the formation of TbPc2 with a yield close to 100% and show that on-surface synthesis leads to identical magnetic and morphological properties compared to the previously studied chemically synthesized species. Moreover, exposure of the surface adsorbed TbPc2 molecules to air does not modify their magnetic and morphological properties. To demonstrate the versatility of our approach, we synthesize novel Tb double deckers using tert-butyl-substituted phthalocyanine (tbu-2H-Pc). The Tb(tbu-Pc)(2) molecules exhibit magnetic hysteresis and therefore are the first purely on-surface synthesized single ion magnet.

Lanthanides (Ln) bis-phthalocyanine (Pc), the so-called LnPc2double decker, are a promising class of molecules with a well-defined magnetic anisotropy. In this work, we investigate the magnetic properties of LnPc2 molecules UHV-deposited on a graphene/Ni(111) substrate and how they modify when an Au layer is intercalated between Ni and graphene. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and linear and magnetic circular dichroism (XLD and XMCD) were used to characterize the systems and probe the magnetic coupling between LnPc2 molecules and the Ni substrate through graphene, both gold-intercalated and not. Two types of LnPc2 molecules (Ln = Tb, Er) with a different magnetic anisotropy (easy-axis for Tb, easy-plane for Er) were considered. XMCD shows an antiferromagnetic coupling between Ln and Ni(111) even in the presence of the graphene interlayer. Au intercalation causes the vanishing of the interaction between Tb and Ni(111). In contrast, in the case of ErPc2, we found that the gold intercalation does not perturb the magnetic coupling. These results, combined with the magnetic anisotropy of the systems, suggest the possible importance of the magnetic dipolar field contribution for determining the magnetic behaviour.

International audience; The remarkable properties of graphene have shown promise for new perspectives in future electronics, notably for nanometer scale devices. Here we grow graphene epitaxially on an off-axis 4H-SiC(0001) substrate and demonstrate the formation of periodic arrangement of monolayer graphene on planar (0001) terraces and Bernal bilayer graphene on (112 — 0) nanofacets of SiC. We investigate these lateral superlattices using Raman spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy/ electrostatic force microscopy (AFM/EFM) and X-ray and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (XPS/ARPES). The correlation of EFM and ARPES reveals the appearance of permanent electronic band gaps in AB-stacked bilayer graphene on (112 — 0) SiC nanofacets of 150 meV. This feature is confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The charge transfer between the substrate and graphene bilayer results in an asymmetric charge distribution between the top and the bottom graphene layers opening an energy gap. This surface organization can be thus defined as self-organized metal–semiconductor graphene.

In-plane heteroatom substitution of graphene is a promising strategy to modify its properties. The ability to dope graphene with electron-donor nitrogen heteroatoms is highly important for modulating electrical properties of graphene. Here we demonstrate a transfer-free method to directly grow large area quasi free-standing N-doped graphene bilayers on an insulating substrate (Si3N4). Electron-bombardment heating under nitrogen flux results in simultaneous growth of N-doped graphene and a Si3N4 layer on the SiC surface. The decoupling of N-doped graphene from the substrate and the presence of Si3N4 are identified by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy and low-energy electron diffraction. The substitution of nitrogen atoms in the graphene planes was confirmed using high resolution X-ray photoemission spectroscopy which reveals several atomic configurations for the nitrogen atoms: Graphitic-like, pyridine-like, and pyrroliclike. Furthermore, we demonstrated for the first time that N-doped graphene could be used to efficiently probe oxygen molecules via nitrogen atom defects. Open image in new window

An increasing number of promising applications for future technology is arising from size constraints in nanoparticles (NPs) and from the chemical manipulation of their surfaces. In this work, we analyse the finite-size and surface effects on polyacrylic acid-coated Fe 3 O 4 NPs and oleic acid-coated γ -Fe 2 O 3 NPs by studying their magnetization curves at different temperatures. The measured thermal dependence of the saturation magnetization is no longer explained by the typical T 3/2 Bloch law, yielding higher values than those expected for its exponent. When incorporated in polymeric matrixes to form magnetic transparent nanocomposites, the oleic acid-coated γ -Fe 2 O 3 NPs also deviate from Bloch’s law, but following the opposite trend observed in free coated NPs.
