Background: There is a growing burden of non-obese people with diabetes mellitus (DM). However, their cardiovascular risk (CV), especially in the presence of cardiovascular-kidney-metabolic (CKM) comorbidities is poorly characterised. The aim of this study was to analyse the risk of major CV adverse events in people with DM according to the presence of obesity and comorbidities (hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and dyslipidaemia)., Methods: We analysed persons who were enrolled in the prospective Silesia Diabetes Heart Project (NCT05626413). Individuals were divided into 6 categories according to the presence of different clinical risk factors (obesity and CKM comorbidities): (i) Group 1: non-obese with 0 CKM comorbidities; (ii) Group 2: non-obese with 1-2 CKM comorbidities; (iii) Group 3: non-obese with 3 CKM comorbidities (non-obese "extremely unhealthy"); (iv) Group 4: obese with 0 CKM comorbidities; (v) Group 5: obese with 1-2 CKM comorbidities; and (vi) Group 6: obese with 3 CKM comorbidities (obese "extremely unhealthy"). The primary outcome was a composite of CV death, myocardial infarction (MI), new onset of heart failure (HF), and ischemic stroke., Results: 2105 people with DM were included [median age 60 (IQR 45-70), 48.8% females]. Both Group 1 and Group 6 were associated with a higher risk of events of the primary composite outcome (aHR 4.50, 95% CI 1.20-16.88; and aHR 3.78, 95% CI 1.06-13.47, respectively). On interaction analysis, in "extremely unhealthy" persons the impact of CKM comorbidities in determining the risk of adverse events was consistent in obese and non-obese ones (P int =0.824), but more pronounced in individuals aged < 65 years compared to older adults (P int = 0.028)., Conclusion: Both non-obese and obese people with DM and 3 associated CKM comorbidities represent an "extremely unhealthy" phenotype which are at the highest risk of CV adverse events. Background: China has undergone a significant socioeconomic transformation over the past few decades due to the implementation of family planning policies. These societal changes have resulted in an increased susceptibility among females to developing cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). Unfortunately, studies investigating the correlation between family planning policies in China and the incidence of CMD remain scarce., Methods: Data from 1,226 females, aged 30 years or older with ≥ 1 live birth, undergoing routine physical examinations between January 2018 and December 2021 were collected, and they were grouped by number of live births 1, 2, and ≥ 3. A binary logistic regression model was employed to examine the association between the number of live births with CMD. Furthermore, the subgroup analysis was performed to elucidate the impact of the implementation of family planning policies with CMD., Results: Women with live births ≥ 3 tended to be older, had higher gravidities, a greater proportion of central obesity, general obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia (all P < 0.05). Across the three groups (live birth = 1, =2 and ≥ 3), the odds ratio (OR) with 95% CI for obesity were: 1.00, 3.32 (2.36-4.69), and 5.73 (3.79-8.68); for dyslipidemia were: 1.00, 1.75 (1.29-2.39), and 2.02 (1.38-2.94); and for CMD were: 1.00, 1.91 (1.44-2.54), and 2.15 (1.46-3.15), respectively (all P < 0.05). In addition, based on the different periods of the childbearing policy in China, a subgroup analysis (where age was divided into ≤ 45, 45-65, and ≥ 65 years old) found that each additional live birth increased the prevalence risk of obesity and CMD in the younger generations, while hypertension and dyslipidemia in the elder generation., Conclusions: Higher live births are positively associated with the prevalence of CMD among women in Southwest China. Background: Dyslipidemia remains the major cause of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD). Lipid management in patients with increased cardiovascular (CV) risk needs improvement across Europe, and data gaps are noticeable at the country level., Hypothesis: We described the current treatment landscape in Belgium, hypothesizing that lipid management in patients with ASCVD remains inadequate and aiming to understand the reasons., Methods: Using data from an anonymized primary care database in Belgium derived from 494 750 individuals, we identified those with any CV risk factor between November 2019 and October 2022 and described the clinical features of patients with ASCVD. The main outcomes were the proportion of patients (i) receiving lipid-lowering therapies (LLTs), (ii) per low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) threshold, stratified per LLT, (iii) reaching the 2021 ESC recommended LDL-C goals, and (iv) LDL-C reduction per type of LLT was also determined., Results: Among 40 888 patients with very high CV risk, 24 859 had established ASCVD. Most patients with ASCVD were either receiving monotherapy (59.6%) or had no documented LLT (25.1%). Further, 64.2% of those with no documented LLT exhibited LDL-C levels ≥ 100 mg/dL. Among common treatment options, one of the greatest improvements in LDL-C levels was achieved with combination therapy of statin and ezetimibe, reducing LDL-C levels by 41.5% (p < 0.0001). Yet, in this group, 24.8% of patients had still LDL-C levels ≥ 100 mg/dL and only 20.7% were at goal., Conclusion: Our study emphasizes the importance of developing strategies to help patients achieve their LDL-C goals, with a focus on supporting the implementation of combination LLT in routine clinical practice., (© 2024 Novartis Pharma NV/SA. The prevalence of dyslipidemia is increasing, and it has become a significant global public health concern. Some studies have demonstrated contradictory relationships between urinary metals and dyslipidemia, and the combined effects of mixed urinary metal exposure on dyslipidemia remain ambiguous. In this study, we examined how individual and combined urinary metal exposure are associated with the occurrence of dyslipidemia. According to the data from the 2018-2019 baseline survey database of the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) Study, a population of 9348 individuals was studied. Inductively coupled plasmamass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to measure 21 urinary metal concentrations in the collected adult urinary samples. The associations between urinary metals and dyslipidemia were analyzed by logistic regression, weighted quantile sum regression (WQS), and quantile-based g-computation (qgcomp), controlled for potential confounders to examine single and combined effects. Dyslipidemia was detected in 3231 individuals, which represented approximately 34.6 % of the total population. According to the single-exposure model, Al and Na were inversely associated with the risk of dyslipidemia (OR = 0.95, 95 % CI: 0.93, 0.98; OR = 0.89, 95 % CI: 0.83, 0.95, respectively), whereas Zn, Ca, and P were positively associated (OR = 1.69, 95 % CI: 1.42, 2.01; OR = 1.12, 95 % CI: 1.06, 1.18; OR = 1.21, 95 % CI: 1.09, 1.34, respectively). Moreover, Zn and P were significantly positively associated even after adjusting for these metals, whereas Al and Cr were negatively associated with the risk of dyslipidemia. The results of the WQS and qgcomp analyses showed that urinary metal mixtures were positively associated with the risk of dyslipidemia (OR = 1.26, 95 % CI: 1.15, 1.38; OR = 1.09, 95 % CI: 1.01, 1.19). This positive association was primarily driven by Zn, P, and Ca. In the sensitivity analyses with collinearity diagnosis, interaction, and stratified analysis, the results remained, confirming the reliability of the study findings. In this observational cross-sectional study, we investigated the relationship between combined obesogenic neighbourhood characteristics and various cardiovascular disease risk factors in adults, including BMI, systolic blood pressure, and blood lipids, as well as the prevalence of overweight/obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidaemia. We conducted a large-scale pooled analysis, comprising data from five Dutch cohort studies (n = 183,871). Neighbourhood obesogenicity was defined according to the Obesogenic Built-environmental CharacterisTics (OBCT) index. The index was calculated for 1000m circular buffers around participants' home addresses. For each cohort, the association between the OBCT index and prevalence of overweight/obesity, hypertension and dyslipidaemia was analysed using robust Poisson regression models. Associations with continuous measures of BMI, systolic blood pressure, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides were analysed using linear regression. All models were adjusted for age, sex, education level and area-level socio-economic status. Cohort-specific estimates were pooled using random-effects meta-analyses. The pooled results show that a 10 point higher OBCT index score was significantly associated with a 0.17 higher BMI (95%CI: 0.10 to 0.24), a 0.01 higher LDL-cholesterol (95% CI: 0.01 to 0.02), a 0.01 lower HDL cholesterol (95% CI: -0.02 to -0.01), and non-significantly associated with a 0.36 mmHg higher systolic blood pressure (95%CI: -0.14 to 0.65). A 10 point higher OBCT index score was also associated with a higher prevalence of overweight/obesity (PR = 1.03; 95% CI: 1.02 to 1.05), obesity (PR = 1.04; 95% CI: 1.01 to 1.08) and hypertension (PR = 1.02; 95% CI: 1.00 to 1.04), but not with dyslipidaemia. This large-scale pooled analysis of five Dutch cohort studies shows that higher neighbourhood obesogenicity, as measured by the OBCT index, was associated with higher BMI, higher prevalence of overweight/obesity, obesity, and hypertension. Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder among women. Dyslipidemia is a prevalent metabolic abnormality in individuals with PCOS. Moreover, vitamin D deficiency is widespread across all societal strata, with a particularly heightened prevalence observed in patients afflicted with PCOS. The present study aimed to investigate the level of vitamin D and its correlation with lipid profiles in Iranian women diagnosed with PCOS., Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out at the PCOS and infertility clinic of Arash Women's Hospital in Tehran. The study encompassed the medical records of PCOS patients who attended the clinic from March 2021 to December 2023. All patients underwent blood tests, which included assessments of fasting blood sugar levels, lipid profiles, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels. The investigation focused on evaluating the relationship between vitamin D levels and lipid profiles. Statistical analyses, including the chi-square test and Spearman's correlation coefficient, were employed to analyze the data., Results: A total of 1004 women diagnosed with PCOS were included in the study. The age range of the participants was 14 to 46 years. The majority of the participants had a body mass index (BMI) within the normal range (n = 555, 55.3%). The median vitamin D level among the participants was 26.00 (IQR: 19.00-34.00). The relationship between vitamin D levels and lipid profile parameters was assessed, revealing no significant correlation between vitamin D levels and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (r = 0.021, p = 0.505), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (r = 0.011, p = 0.719), or triglyceride (TG) (r = -0.026, p = 0.417) levels, both in non-adjusted and age-adjusted analyses., Conclusion: According to the present study, there was no significant correlation between serum 25(OH)D deficiency and elevated TG or LDL levels or decreased HDL levels in PCOS patients. Nevertheless, further prospective studies are needed to determine whether there is a causal relationship between vitamin D deficiency and lipid profile alterations, specifically among PCOS patients., (© 2024. This study aimed to evaluate the superiority of anthropometric indices compared to others for predicting ischemic heart disease (IHD) or cardiometabolic risk factors. This study was a cross-sectional analysis of the Pars Cohort Study data. In total, 9229 Valashahr inhabitants aged 40-75 were included in the analysis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) analyses was used to compare the predictive accuracy of four anthropometric measures, including body mass index, waist to height ratio (WHtR), waist to hip ratio (WHR), and waist circumference (WC). IHD prevalence was 10.4% in our sample. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome was 12.7%, 29.2%, 58.4%, and 22.3%, respectively. All anthropometric indices had poor to good accuracy in predicting IHD risk factors, with AUCs ranging between 0.580 and 0.818. WHR was the most accurate measure for predicting IHD in both genders. All indexes had a better accuracy for predicting DM, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in males than in females. To conclude, anthropometric measures, especially WC and WHtR, are recommended for predicting metabolic syndrome in primary prevention settings. Background: Evidence from cohort studies indicates a bidirectional relationship between periodontal disease and type 2 diabetes (T2D), but the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In this study, we aimed to (1) identify saliva, plasma, and multifluid metabolomic signatures associated with periodontal disease and (2) determine if these signatures predict T2D progression and cardiometabolic biomarkers at year 3., Methods and Results: We included participants from the SOALS (San Juan Overweight Adult Longitudinal Study) (n=911). Metabolites from saliva (k=635) and plasma (k=1051) were quantified using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We applied elastic net regression with 10-fold cross-validation to identify baseline metabolomic signatures of periodontal disease. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression and linear regression were used to evaluate the association with T2D progression and biomarker concentrations. Metabolomic profiles included highly weighted metabolites related to lysine and pyrimidine metabolism. Periodontal disease or its 3 metabolomic signatures were not associated with T2D progression in 3 years. Prospectively, 1-SD increments in the multifluid and saliva metabolomic signatures were associated with higher low-density lipoprotein (multifluid: 12.9±5.70, P =0.02; saliva: 13.3±5.11, P =0.009). A 1-SD increment in the plasma metabolomic signature was also associated with Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance (2.67±1.14, P =0.02) and triglyceride (0.52±0.18, P =0.002)., Conclusions: Although metabolomic signatures of periodontal disease could not predict T2D progression, they were associated with low-density lipoprotein, triglyceride, and Homeostatic Model Assessment for Insulin Resistance levels at year 3.

Background and Objectives : End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is a major risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of traditional risk factors to the development of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients on dialysis. Materials and Methods : In this study, 54 patients on dialysis with angina symptoms or a positive exercise stress test underwent coronary angiography. Lesions with obstruction >70% lumen diameter of the coronary artery were considered significant. Traditional risk factors included hypertension, diabetes, smoking, dyslipidemia, age, gender, and time spent on dialysis. Results : Out of 54 participants, 41 (75.92%) were men and 13 (24.07%) women. CAD was present in 34 (62.96%) patients, and 20 (37.03%) patients were without CAD. The average age of the participants was 66.51 years. In the group with CAD, the average age was 69.52 years with an average time spent on dialysis of 2.73 years. In the group without CAD, the average age was 61.40 years with a time spent on dialysis of 2.35 years. Hypertension was present in 92.59% of all participants and 97.05% of those with CAD. Diabetes was present in 41.17 patients with CAD and 40% of those without CAD. Dyslipidemia was present in 76.47 participants with CAD and in 40% of those without CAD. Smoking was noticed in 35.29% of the participants with CAD and 57.14% of those without CAD. Besides hypertension, significant predictors for the development of CAD in patients on dialysis were dyslipidemia (OR 3.698, Cl 1.005-13.608, p = 0.049) and age (OR 1.056, Cl 1.004-1.110, p = 0.033). Conclusions : Among the traditional risk factors, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and age are the predictors for the development of CAD in patients on dialysis. Further large randomized clinical studies are needed to clarify the role of traditional risk factors for CAD in patients with ESKD.

Introduction: As the fetus relies on maternal thyroid hormones in early pregnancy, maternal hypothyroidism plays an important role in fetal development. However, the association between maternal hypothyroidism and metabolic disease in offspring is unclear., Objective: To examine the association between maternal hypothyroidism in pregnancy and metabolic outcomes (obesity, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and dyslipidemia) in children < 18 years., Methods: We systematically searched 5 databases from inception to May 2023. Eligible studies included cohort, case-control, and randomized controlled trials involving children born to mothers with or without hypothyroidism in pregnancy. Data were pooled across studies using random-effects models for outcomes reported in at least three studies. Quality assessment was performed using the ROBINS-E tool for observational studies and the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool for trials., Results: The search identified 3221 articles, of which 7 studies were included (1 trial, 6 observational). All studies were conducted outside of North America and ranged in size from 250 to > 1 million children. The follow-up time ranged from 6 to 20 years. Included studies support an increased risk of hypertension and glucose dysregulation in offspring exposed to maternal hypothyroidism (hypertension: OR 1.08, 95% CI 0.75, 1.57 and HR 1.81, 95% CI 1.21, 2.69; diabetes: RR 2.7, 95% CI 0.7, 10). In the pooled analysis, maternal hypothyroidism was not associated with obesity in offspring (OR 1.04, 95% CI 0.64, 1.70)., Conclusion: This study found inconsistent evidence on the association between maternal hypothyroidism in pregnancy and metabolic outcomes in offspring, though associations with hypertension and glucose dysregulation are possible., (© 2024. Introduction: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is associated with a wide range of unfavorable cardiometabolic risk factors, including obesity, hypertension, insulin resistance, impaired glucose metabolism, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome. Compared with women with regular menstrual cycles, women with a history of irregular menstrual periods have an increased unfavorable cardiometabolic risk. Recently, the association between the severity of oligomenorrhea and hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance has been demonstrated. However, evidence linking the severity of menstrual cyclicity with cardiometabolic risk in PCOS women is scarce., Material and Methods: This work was a prospective cross-sectional study. A total of 154 women diagnosed with PCOS by the Rotterdam criteria were recruited from July 2021 to September 2022. PCOS women with eumenorrheic (eumeno group), oligomenorrhea (oligo group), and amenorrhea (ameno group) underwent history and physical examination, gonadal steroid hormone measurement, lipid profile, oral glucose tolerance test, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance., Results: A trend toward an increase in unfavorable cardiometabolic risk markers including obesity, hypertension, prevalence of insulin resistance, prediabetes, dyslipidemia, and metabolic syndrome was observed in the ameno group (n = 57) as compared with the eumeno (n = 24) or oligo group (n = 73). A higher prevalence of insulin resistance (odds ratio [OR]: 3.02; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03-8.81) and prediabetes (OR: 3.94; 95% CI: 1.01-15.40) was observed in the ameno group than in the eumeno group, and a higher proportion of dyslipidemia (OR: 2.44; 95% CI: 1.16-5.15) was observed in the ameno group than in the oligo group in the binary logistic regression analysis after adjusting for confounding factors., Conclusions: PCOS women with amenorrhea show a higher prevalence of insulin resistance, prediabetes, and dyslipidemia compared with those with oligomenorrhea or eumenorrhea. The severity of menstrual dysfunction could be used as a readily obtainable marker for the identification of PCOS women at greatest risk of cardiometabolic diseases., (© 2024 The Authors. Exploring the association between exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and the risk of dyslipidemia and possible mediating effects is essential for conducting epidemiological health studies on related lipid disorders. Therefore, our study aimed to elucidate the potential association between PAH exposure and dyslipidemia risk and further identify the mediating effects based on blood cell-based inflammatory biomarkers. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 8380 individuals with complete survey data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2001-2016). Multiple models (generalized linear regression model, restricted cubic spline model, Bayesian kernel machine regression, weighted quantiles sum regression) were used to assess the relationship between PAH co-exposure and the dyslipidemia risk and further identify potential mediating effects. Among the 8380 subjects, 2886 (34.44 %) had dyslipidemia. After adjusting for the confounding factors, the adjusted OR and 95% CI for dyslipidemia in the highest quartile of subjects were 1.30 (1.11, 1.51), 1. 22 (1.04, 1.43), 1.21 (1.03, 1.42), 1.29 (1.10, 1.52), 1.18 (1.01, 1.37), and 1.04 (0.89, 1.23) for 1-hydroxynaphthalene, 2-hydroxynaphthalene, 3-hydroxyfluorene, 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-FLU), 1-hydroxyphenanthrene, and 1-hydroxypyrene. The Bayesian kernel machine regression model also showed a positive correlation between PAH mixtures and dyslipidemia, and 2-FLU has the highest contribution. Mediation effect analyses showed that white blood cells and neutrophils were statistically significant in the association between PAHs and dyslipidemia. The present study suggests that individual and mixed PAH exposures may increase the risk of dyslipidemia in adults. Inflammatory biomarkers significantly mediated the relationship between PAH exposure and dyslipidemia. Various factors have been described in the literature to explain the tendency of an individual to undergo medical screenings. This study aimed to assess the association between the level of knowledge about dyslipidaemia and the frequency of lipid testing, as well as the potential impact of predisposing, enabling, and need factors on the uptake of blood lipid screening. This study was a cross-sectional survey involving 314 participants who were Malaysian residents of Taman Selatan, Klang, aged 30 and above. The study utilized a 42-item paper-based bilingual questionnaire to evaluate the predisposing, enabling, and need factors that could potentially influence the practice of lipid testing. Out of the 314 residents approached, 271 responded to the questionnaire yielding a response rate of 86.31%. The median knowledge score was 5 out of 17. Lower monthly income (OR = 3.225, 95% CI = 0.255 to 2.141), higher number of comorbidities (OR = 2.724, 95% CI = 0.037 to 2.013), higher total knowledge score (OR = 1.334, 95% CI = 0.063 to 0.512) and respondent's belief and attitude (OR = 0.813, 95% CI = -2.033 to -0.539), were found to be significantly associated with the frequency of lipid testing. In conclusion, the knowledge level regarding dyslipidaemia was below average and associated with a lower tendency to undergo frequent lipid testing. There is a need for innovative health awareness such as active educational campaigns in various settings of the community. Further qualitative studies that explore the understanding of the publics', and antecedents of their, lipid screening behaviour are required. Objective: This study aims to identify the association between adherence to healthy eating, using the Lebanese Mediterranean Diet Scale (LMDS), and cardiovascular risk factors in the Lebanese population., Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study using a multistage cluster sample was conducted in Lebanon. Sociodemographic characteristics were collected through structured interviews and self-administered questionnaires. The LMDS assessed dietary habits. The associations between diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease were investigated using stratification analysis., Results: The study included 2048 people (mean age: 41.54 ± 17.09 years). Higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet was associated with older age (Beta = 0.175, p < 0.001), being female (Beta = 0.085, p = 0.001), being married (Beta = 0.054, p = 0.047), participating in regular physical activity (Beta = 0.142, p < 0.001), and having cardiovascular disease (Beta = 0.115, p < 0.001) and diabetes (Beta = 0.055, p = 0.043). Adherence was, however, negatively associated with being a smoker (Beta = -0.083, p = 0.002), a previous smoker (Beta = -0.059, p = 0.026), and having higher distress levels (Beta = -0.079, p = 0.002). Stratification analysis by diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease (CVD) consistently demonstrated these associations., Conclusions: These findings suggest that demographic and health factors influence the Lebanese population's adherence to the Mediterranean diet. Older age, female gender, married status, physical activity, CVD, and diabetes were all found to be associated with adherence to the Mediterranean diet in the Lebanese population. In contrast, smoking and distress were inversely associated with it.

Background: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death worldwide. Obesity and atherosclerosis are considered risk factors for this pathology. There are multiple methods to evaluate obesity, in the same way as there are different formulas to determine atherogenic risk. Since both pathologies are closely related, the objective of our work was to evaluate whether the ECORE-BF scale is capable of predicting atherogenic risk., Methods: Observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study in which 386,924 workers from several autonomous communities in Spain participated. The association between the ECORE-BF scale and five atherogenic risk indices was evaluated. The relationship between variables was assessed using the chi-square test and Student's t test in independent samples. Multivariate analysis was performed with the multinomial logistic regression test, calculating the odds ratio and 95% confidence intervals, with the Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit test. ROC curves established the cut-off points for moderate and high vascular age and determined the Youden index., Results: The mean values of the ECORE-BF scale were higher in individuals with atherogenic dyslipidemia and the lipid triad, as well as in those with elevated values of the three atherogenic indices studied, with p <0.001 in all cases. As atherogenic risk increased across the five evaluated scales, the prevalence of obesity also significantly increased, with p <0.001 in all cases. In the ROC curve analysis, the AUCs for atherogenic dyslipidemia and the lipid triad were above 0.75, indicating a good association between these scales and the ECORE-BF. Although the Youden indices were not exceedingly high, they were around 0.5., Conclusions: There is a good association between atherogenic risk scales, atherogenic dyslipidemia, and lipid triad, and the ECORE-BF scale. The ECORE-BF scale can be a useful and quick tool to evaluate atherogenic risk in primary care and occupational medicine consultations without the need for blood tests.

Background: In contemporary times, increased prevalence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and elevated dyslipidemia levels present substantial public health challenges. However, the relationship between H. pylori and dyslipidemia remains inconclusive. No studies have yet conducted a population-based classification to investigate the impact of H. pylori infection on dyslipidemia in individuals with diabetes., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was carried out on a total of 60,535 individuals who underwent health check-ups at the Health Examination Center in Taizhou Hospital from 2017 to 2022. Physical measurements, hematological markers and detection of H. pylori were gathered from all patients. The study population was further stratified into diabetic and non-diabetic groups for analysis., Results: H. pylori infection was found to be an autonomous risk factor for dyslipidemia based on the results of multivariate logistic regression analysis (OR = 1.13, 95% CI: 1.03-1.24). However, no notable effect on dyslipidemia in the non-diabetic group was observed. Furthermore, at the follow-up, the group with persistent negative showed a significantly lower incidence ratio of dyslipidemia compared to the group with persistent infection (P = 0.006). The persistent negative group exhibited a significantly higher rate of improvement in dyslipidemia compared to the new infection group (P = 0.038)., Conclusions: In the diabetic population, the presence of H. pylori infection heightens the propensity for developing dyslipidemia. Therefore, the implementation of efficient eradication strategies for H. pylori infection could potentially lead to a decrease in the occurrence of dyslipidemia among individuals with diabetes., (© 2024. Background: Dyslipidemia is an imbalance of lipid profiles. It increases the chance of clogged arteries and may cause heart attacks, strokes, and other circulatory disorders. Dyslipidemia affects the general population, but its severity is higher in diabetic populations. As a result, the chance of dyslipidemia-associated morbidity and mortality is highest in diabetic patients. In Ethiopia, around 2 to 6.5% of the population live with diabetes, but their lipid profiles are inconsistent across the studies. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of diabetic dyslipidemia and its predictors among people with diabetes in Ethiopia., Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted. The searches were carried out in MEDLINE via PubMed and OVID, EBSCO, Embase, and other supplementary gateways such as Google and Google Scholar, for articles published up to June 2023. The articles were searched and screened by title (ti), abstract (ab), and full text (ft). The quality of the eligible studies was assessed by the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. The heterogeneity was detected by the Cochrane Q statistic test and the I-squared (I 2 ) test. Then subgroup analysis and meta-regression analysis were used to identify the source of the variations. A random or fixed-effect meta-analysis model was used to estimate the overall pooled prevalence and average effects. The publication bias was assessed by the funnel plot asymmetry test and/or Begg and Mazumdar's test for rank correlation (p-value < 0.05). The protocol has been registered in an international database, the prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO), with reference number CRD42023441572., Result: A total of 14 articles with 3662 participants were included in this review. The pooled prevalence of diabetic dyslipidemia in Ethiopia was found to be 65.7% (95% confidence interval (CI): 57.5, 73.9), I 2  = 97%, and p-value < 0.001. The overall prevalence of triglycerides (TG) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) were found to be 51.8% (95% CI: 45.1, 58.6) and 44.2% (95% CI: 32.8, 55.7), respectively, among lipid profiles. In meta-regression analysis, the sample size (p value = 0.01) is the covariate for the variation of the included studies. Being female (adjusted odds ratio (AOR): 3.9, 95% CI: 1.5, 10.1), physical inactivity (AOR: 2.6, 95% CI: 1.5, 4.3), and uncontrolled blood glucose (AOR: 4.2, 95% CI: 1.9, 9.4) were found to be the determinants of dyslipidemia among diabetic patients., Conclusion: This review revealed that the prevalence of diabetic dyslipidemia is high among people with diabetes in Ethiopia. Being female, having physical inactivity, and having uncontrolled blood glucose were found to be predictors of dyslipidemia among people with diabetes. Therefore, regular screening of lipid profiles and the provision of lipid-lowering agents should be strengthened to reduce life-threatening cardiovascular complications. High blood pressure (BP) and dyslipidemia are major risk factors for cardiovascular disease mortality. The systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) has been suggested as a predictive tool to identify those at risk for chronic diseases, however, its use for predicting high BP and dyslipidemia has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to examine the association between SII and high BP as well as lipid markers. Retrospective hospital data from a large cohort (n = 3895) of Saudi adults aged ≥18 years were analyzed. Lipid markers (cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein [LDL]), systolic BP, and diastolic BP measures were extracted. When the sample was divided into quartiles of SII, cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL were higher in those with a higher SII than in those with a lower SII (P < .01). After adjusting for potential confounders, higher SII was significantly associated with higher odds of hypertension (odds ratio: 1.12, 95% confidence interval: 1.04-1.21) and elevated LDL (odds ratio: 1.07, 95% CI: 1.02-1.14), but not with elevated cholesterol. Across quartiles of SII, there was a significant trend between higher SII and the odds of hypertension in people with diabetes and those aged ≥65 years. The SII could be an economical predictive measure for identifying individuals at risk of hypertension and some aspects of dyslipidemia. Objective: Dyslipidemia is one of the causes of coronary heart disease (CAD), and apolipoprotein E (APOE) gene polymorphism affects lipid levels. However, the relationship between APOE gene polymorphisms and premature CAD (PCAD, male CAD patients with ≤ 55 years old and female with ≤ 65 years old) risk had different results in different studies. The aim of this study was to assess this relationship and to further evaluate the relationship between APOE gene polymorphisms and PCAD risk in the Hakka population., Methods: This study retrospectively analyzed 301 PCAD patients and 402 age matched controls without CAD. The APOE rs429358 and rs7412 polymorphisms were genotyped by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) -chip technique. The distribution of APOE genotypes and alleles between the case group and the control group was compared. The relationship between APOE genotypes and PCAD risk was obtained by logistic regression analysis., Results: The frequency of the APOE ɛ3/ɛ4 genotype (18.9% vs. 10.2%, p = 0.001) and ε4 allele (11.1% vs. 7.0%, p = 0.007) was higher in the PCAD patients than that in controls, respectively. PCAD patients with ɛ2 allele had higher TG level than those with ɛ3 allele, and controls carried ɛ2 allele had higher HDL-C level and lower LDL-C level than those carried ɛ3 allele. Regression logistic analysis showed that BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m 2 (BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m 2 vs. BMI 18.5-23.9 kg/m 2 , OR: 1.763, 95% CI: 1.235-2.516, p = 0.002), history of smoking (Yes vs. No, OR: 5.098, 95% CI: 2.910-8.930, p < 0.001), ɛ3/ɛ4 genotype (ɛ3/ɛ4 vs. ɛ3/ɛ3, OR: 2.203, 95% CI: 1.363-3.559, p = 0.001), ε4 allele (ε4 vs. ε3, OR: 2.125, 95% CI: 1.333-3.389, p = 0.002), and TC level (OR: 1.397, 95% CI: 1.023-1.910, p = 0.036) were associated with PCAD., Conclusions: In summary, BMI ≥ 24.0 kg/m 2 , history of smoking, APOE ɛ3/ɛ4 genotype, and TC level were independent risk factors for PCAD. Background: The coexistence of multiple standard modifiable risk factors (SMuRFs),classical and novel risk factors (RFs) for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is common in the Middle East (ME). There is a paucity of data on the coexistence of these RFs in ME young women., Aim: Comparing the prevalence and the statistical patterns of the SMuRFs, classical and novel RFs in target population., Methods: In this case-control (1:2) study, consecutive young women aged 18-50 years were enrolled in 12 centers (July 2021 to October 2023). Prevalence and coexistence of 19 RFs were compared between cases with ASCVD and their controls. The RFs included SMuRFs (hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cigarette smoking), other classical RF (obesity, family history of premature ASCVD, and physical inactivity), novel RFs and social determinants of health (health insurance, place of residence, depression, and level of education)., Results: The study included 627 subjects; 209 had ASCVD (median age 46 years, IQR 49-42 years) and 418 controls (median age 45 years, IQR 48-41 years). The presence of 1-2 RFs; (ASCVD: 63.2%, Control: 54.1%, p=0.037) and 3-4 RFs; (ASCVD: 27.8%, Control: 3.3%, p < 0.001) SMuRFs was more prevalent in women with ASCVD. Similarly, the presence of 4-5 RFs; (ASCVD: 40.7%, Control: 14.6%, p<0.001), and 6-7 (ASCVD: 10.5%, Control: 1%, p < 0.001). The classical RF were also significantly common in these women. The distribution of multiple novel RF was not statistically significant across both groups. Finally, regarding the socioeconomic RFs in women with ASCVDs, the presence of 1-2 RFs (ASCVD: 59.8%, Control: 76.1%, p < 0.001) was significantly less common while the presence of 3-4 RFs (ASCVD: 39.2%, Control: 21.8%, p < 0.001) was vastly more common., Conclusion: An elevated rate of coexistence of classical RF in the case group, mainly socioeconomic and SMuRFs. Background: The abnormal low-density protein cholesterol (LDL-C) level in the development of atherosclerosis is often comorbid in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM). This study aimed to investigate the aggravating effect of abnormal LDL-C levels on coronary artery plaques assessed by coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in T2DM., Materials and Methods: This study collected 3439 T2DM patients from September 2011 to February 2022. Comparative analysis of differences in coronary plaque characteristics was performed for the patients between the normal LDL-C level group and the abnormal LDL-C level group. Factors with P < 0.1 in the univariable linear regression analyses were included in the multivariable linear stepwise regression., Results: A total of 2820 eligible T2DM patients were included and identified as the normal LDL-C level group (n = 973) and the abnormal LDL-C level group (n = 1847). Compared with the normal LDL-C level group, both on a per-patient basis and per-segment basis, patients with abnormal LDL-C level showed more calcified plaques, partially calcified plaques, low attenuation plaques, positive remodellings, and spotty calcifications. Multivessel obstructive disease (MVD), nonobstructive stenosis (NOS), obstructive stenosis (OS), plaque involvement degree (PID), segment stenosis score (SSS), and segment involvement scores (SIS) were likely higher in the abnormal LDL-C level group than that in the normal LDL-C level group (P < 0.001). In multivariable linear stepwise regression, the abnormal LDL-C level was validated as an independent positive correlation with high-risk coronary plaques and the degree and extent of stenosis caused by plaques (low attenuation plaque: β = 0.116; positive remodelling: β = 0.138; spotty calcification: β = 0.091; NOS: β = 0.427; OS: β = 0.659: SIS: β = 1.114; SSS: β = 2.987; PID: β = 2.716, all P value < 0.001)., Conclusions: Abnormal LDL-C levels aggravate atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with T2DM. Background: Dyslipidemia, characterized by variations in plasma lipid profiles, poses a global health threat linked to millions of deaths annually., Objectives: This study focuses on predicting dyslipidemia incidence using machine learning methods, addressing the crucial need for early identification and intervention., Methods: The dataset, derived from the Lifestyle Promotion Project (LPP) in East Azerbaijan Province, Iran, undergoes a comprehensive preprocessing, merging, and null handling process. Target selection involves five distinct dyslipidemia-related variables. Normalization techniques and three feature selection algorithms are applied to enhance predictive modeling., Result: The study results underscore the potential of different machine learning algorithms, specifically multi-layer perceptron neural network (MLP), in reaching higher performance metrics such as accuracy, F1 score, sensitivity and specificity, among other machine learning methods. Among other algorithms, Random Forest also showed remarkable accuracies and outperformed K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) in metrics like precision, recall, and F1 score. The study's emphasis on feature selection detected meaningful patterns among five target variables related to dyslipidemia, indicating fundamental shared unities among dyslipidemia-related factors. Background: We studied the prevalence and incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2DM) and its associated risk factors in younger (20 and 39 years) and older individuals (≥40 years) over a 10-year period., Methods: Epidemiological surveys in 2006 (n = 7066) and 2016 (n = 9848) were conducted in similar urban and rural locations of southern India among people aged ≥20 years. Diagnosis of T2DM was made using World Health Organization criteria. Self-reported diabetes was verified from medical records. Age and gender standardized prevalence and incidence rates, percentage change in obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia were calculated. Prevalence ratios (PR) were calculated using Poisson regression analyses. Primary study was registered on www., Clinicaltrials: gov. Identifier: NCT03490136., Results: In 10 years, the prevalence of T2DM increased in younger (7.8% vs. 4.5%, p < 0.0001) and older individuals (34% vs. 28.4%, p < 0.0001). After adjusting for age, family history of diabetes, and waist circumference, younger individuals showed a higher percentage increase in prevalence than the older group (PR = 1.36 [95% confidence interval [CI], 1.14-1.62], p = 0.001) versus (PR = 1.11 [95% CI, 1.02-1.20], p = 0.02). Increase in rates of obesity and dyslipidemia was also higher in the younger than in the older individuals. In 10 years, incidence of T2DM increased by 120% (1.1% vs. 0.5%, p < 0.0001) and 150% (5% vs. 2%, p < 0.0001) in the younger and older individuals, respectively., Conclusions: Higher percentage increase in prevalence of T2DM was seen among younger individuals over a 10-year period. Purpose: In 2022 hypertensive disease was the second cause of death in Croatia. The crude prevalence of hypertension is increasing and still majority of hypertensive patients did not reach blood pressure and cholesterol goals Low awareness, and small number of treated and controlled patients point on poor adherence and even worse clinical inertia., Materials and Methods: Croatian Hypertension League (CHL) has started the permanent public health action Hunting the Silent Killer aiming to increase health literacy. In 2023 we decided to intensify program with two missions - ' 70/26', and 'Do you know what is your number?' aiming to achieve target values in 70% and in 50% of patients treated for hypertension and dyslipidaemia, respectively, by 2026. For the health care workers, the program will primarily involve digital education, and 'School of Communication in Hypertension'. In the second arm of the program, we will advise patients and general population to visit our educational website with important and useful information on how to improve bad lifestyle, how to proper measure blood pressure, why is it important to sustain in taking drugs etc. In 2026, the CHL will organise field research to assess the success of programs using the same methodology as we used in previous EH-UH studies., Conclusion: We will monitor and analyse trends in the management and control of patients treated for hypertension and dyslipidaemia. This will enable us to make an evidence-based conclusion how successful we were in increasing health literacy.

Background: Glucokinase (GK) plays a key role in glucose metabolism. In the liver, GK is regulated by GK regulatory protein (GKRP) with nuclear sequestration at low plasma glucose level. Some GK activators (GKAs) disrupt GK-GKRP interaction which increases hepatic cytoplasmic GK level. Excess hepatic GK activity may exceed the capacity of glycogen synthesis with excess triglyceride formation. It remains uncertain whether hypertriglyceridemia associated with some GKAs in previous clinical trials was due to direct GK activation or impaired GK-GKRP interaction., Methods: Using publicly available genome-wide association study summary statistics, we selected independent genetic variants of GCKR and GCK associated with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) as instrumental variables, to mimic the effects of impaired GK-GKRP interaction and direct GK activation, respectively. We applied two-sample Mendelian Randomization (MR) framework to assess their causal associations with lipid-related traits, risks of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and cardiovascular diseases. We verified these findings in one-sample MR analysis using individual-level statistics from the Hong Kong Diabetes Register (HKDR)., Results: Genetically-proxied impaired GK-GKRP interaction increased plasma triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and apolipoprotein B levels with increased odds ratio (OR) of 14.6 (95% CI 4.57-46.4) per 1 mmol/L lower FPG for MASLD and OR of 2.92 (95% CI 1.78-4.81) for coronary artery disease (CAD). Genetically-proxied GK activation was associated with decreased risk of CAD (OR 0.69, 95% CI 0.54-0.88) and not with dyslipidemia. One-sample MR validation in HKDR showed consistent results., Conclusions: Impaired GK-GKRP interaction, rather than direct GK activation, may worsen lipid profiles and increase risks of MASLD and CAD. Objective: To investigate the association between cumulative exposure to low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT) in the young adulthood population., Methods: Young adult subject (18-45 year old) from the Kailuan Study group who participated in the same period of follow-up and received carotid artery ultrasound were selected as the observation subjects. Among them, 3651 cases met the inclusion criteria, which required that carotid artery color ultrasound examinations be completed from 2010 to 2016, with complete IMT measurements, LDL-C data collected at least twice before carotid ultrasound, and participants' age to be ≤ 45 years at the time of carotid artery color ultrasound examination. Linear regression was used to analyze the correlation between time-weighted average (TWA) to LDL-C cumulative exposure and IMT the young population. Logistic regression was used to analyze the effects of different TWA groups on IMT thickening. Considering that the use of anti hypertensive drugs and lipid-lowering drugs may affect TWA LDL-C, this study excluded people taking antihypertensive drugs and lipid-lowering drugs, and conducted a repeat analysis of the main results., Results: There was a positive correlation between TWA LDL-C and IMT, with IMT increasing by 0.017 mm when TWA LDL-C increased by 1 mmol/L * year. The TWA LDL-C in the highest group was identified as a risk factor for IMT thickening, with odds ratio (OR) values of 1.812(1.027 ~ 3.200) in the T3 group. After excluding patients taking antihypertensive drugs and lipid-lowering drugs, the results still showed that the T3 group with the highest TWA LDL-C was a risk factor for IMT thickening, with an OR value of 1.850(0.988-3.464), P for trend is 0.043., Conclusion: This cohort study revealed that TWA LDL-C is positively correlated with IMT in young adulthood for risk stratification, and control LDL-C levels at an earlier age may reduce the lifetime risk of developing atherosclerotic disease., Trial Registration: ChiCTR-TNC-11001489., (© 2024. Background: Circulating atherogenic index of plasma (AIP) levels has been proposed as a novel biomarker for dyslipidemia and as a predictor of insulin resistance (IR) risk. However, the association between AIP and the incidence of new-onset stroke, particularly in individuals with varying glucose metabolism status, remains ambiguous., Methods: A total of 8727 participants aged 45 years or older without a history of stroke from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were included in this study. The AIP was calculated using the formula log [Triglyceride (mg/dL) / High-density lipoprotein cholesterol (mg/dL)]. Participants were divided into four groups based on their baseline AIP levels: Q1 (AIP ≤ 0.122), Q2 (0.122 < AIP ≤ 0.329), Q3 (0.329 < AIP ≤ 0.562), and Q4 (AIP > 0.562). The primary endpoint was the occurrence of new-onset stroke events. The Kaplan-Meier curves, multivariate Cox proportional hazard models, and Restricted cubic spline analysis were applied to explore the association between baseline AIP levels and the risk of developing a stroke among individuals with varying glycemic metabolic states., Results: During an average follow-up of 8.72 years, 734 participants (8.4%) had a first stroke event. The risk for stroke increased with each increasing quartile of baseline AIP levels. Kaplan-Meier curve analysis revealed a significant difference in stroke occurrence among the AIP groups in all participants, as well as in those with prediabetes mellitus (Pre-DM) and diabetes mellitus (DM) (all P values < 0.05). After adjusting for potential confounders, the risk of stroke was significantly higher in the Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups than in the Q1 group in all participants. The respective hazard ratios (95% confidence interval) for stroke in the Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups were 1.34 (1.05-1.71), 1.52 (1.19-1.93), and 1.84 (1.45-2.34). Furthermore, high levels of AIP were found to be linked to an increased risk of stroke in both pre-diabetic and diabetic participants across all three Cox models. However, this association was not observed in participants with normal glucose regulation (NGR) (p > 0.05). Restricted cubic spline analysis also demonstrated that higher baseline AIP levels were associated with higher hazard ratios for stroke in all participants and those with glucose metabolism disorders., Conclusions: An increase in baseline AIP levels was significantly associated with the risk of stroke in middle-aged and elderly individuals, and exhibited distinct characteristics depending on the individual's glucose metabolism status., (© 2024. Current evidence suggests that non-traditional serum lipid ratios are more effective than traditional serum lipid parameters in predicting vascular diseases, and both of them are associated with dietary patterns. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII) and atherogenic indices using traditional serum lipid parameters (triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), LDL cholesterol (LDL-c), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c)) and non-traditional serum lipid ratios (atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), Castelli's index-I (CRI&#95;I), Castelli's index-II (CRI&#95;II), the lipoprotein combination index (LCI), and the atherogenic coefficient (AC)). Basic information from the Ravansar Non-Communicable Diseases cohort study was utilized in the present cross-sectional observational study. The study included 8870 adults aged 35-65 years. A validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) was used to measure DII. We compared the distributions of outcomes by DII score groups using multivariable linear regression. The difference between DII score groups was evaluated by the Bonferroni test. The mean ± SD DII was - 2.5 ± 1.43, and the prevalence of dyslipidemia was 44%. After adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, alcohol consumption status, physical activity, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), fasting blood sugar (FBS), body mass index (BMI) and socioeconomic status (SES), participants in the highest quartile of DII had a greater risk for CRI&#95;I (β = 0.11, CI 0.05, 0.18), CRI&#95;II (β = 0.06, CI 0.01, 0.11), LCI (β = 0.11, CI 288.12, 8373.11), AC (β = 0.11, CI 0.05, 0.17) and AIP (β = 0.06, CI 0.02, 0.10). Moreover, according to the adjusted logistic regression model, the risk of dyslipidemia significantly increased by 24% (OR: 1.24, 95% CI 1.08-1.41), 7% (OR: 1.07, 95% CI 0.94, 1.21) and 3% (OR: 1.03, 95% CI 0.91, 1.16) in Q4, Q3 and Q2 of the DII, respectively. Finally, diet-related inflammation, as estimated by the DII, is associated with a higher risk of CRI-I, CRI-II, LCI, AC, and AIP and increased odds of dyslipidemia., (© 2024. The Author(s).)

Coronary artery disease is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. It occurs due to a combination of genetics, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Premature coronary artery disease (PCAD) is a neglected clinical entity despite the rising number of cases worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors of premature coronary artery disease. In this study, we searched articles that had studied the risk factors of premature coronary artery diseases from January 2000 to July 2022 in Saudi Arabia in Web of Science, Pub Med, Scopus, Springer, and Wiley databases. The final analysis is based on seven articles. The smoking prevalence was 39%, diabetes mellitus 41%, hypertension 33%, overweight and obesity 18%, family history of coronary artery disease (CAD) 19%, dyslipidemia 37%, and the prevalence range of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol was 33.8-55.0%. The results revealed a mortality prevalence of 4% ranging from 2 to 8% which is similar to the prevalence in older patients which was 2-10%. Smoking, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, family history of CAD, dyslipidemia, and overweight/obesity are significantly and positively associated with premature coronary artery diseases. The health authorities should design and implement an intensive and effective prophylactic plan to minimize the subsequent impact of PCAD on the young population. Objective: To investigate the correlation between peripheral and coronary immature platelet, and factors that may predict coronary immature platelet levels., Methods: The cross-sectional, observational, analytical study was conducted at the Cardiovascular Diagnostic and Intervention Centre of Dr Soetomo General Academic Hospital, Surabaya, Indonesia, from November 2017 to January 2018, and comprised patients of either gender with coronary artery disease. Peripheral and coronary blood samples were retrieved during coronary catheterisation. Immature platelet fraction was acquired by examining whole blood samples analysed through automated flow cytometry. Relationship between peripheral and coronary immature platelet fractions and counts were analysed using parametric correlation test, followed by linear regression analysis model of variables that influenced coronary immature platelet fraction. The statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 25.0 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY, USA)., Results: Of the 70 patients, 55(78.6%) were males and 15(21.4%) were females. The overall mean age was 57±5.32 years. There were 35(50%) patients with a history of smoking, and 34(48.6%) had hypertension and dyslipidaemia. Mean peripheral immature platelet fraction was 3.86±1.84% and mean coronary immature platelet fraction was 3.63±1.7%. There was a robust positive and significant correlation (r=0.882; p<0.001) between immature platelet levels in peripheral and coronary blood. Peripheral immature platelet and glycated haemoglobin >7.5 were independent predictors of coronary immature platelet (p=0.001)., Conclusions: There was a strong correlation between immature platelet levels in peripheral and coronary blood.

Aims: Although fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) have an impact on lipid metabolism, the relationship between different body composition phenotypes and lipid profiles is still unclear. By dividing the FM and FFM by the square of the height, respectively, the fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) can be used to determine the variations in body composition. This study aimed to investigate the relationship of combined FMI and FFMI with low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels., Methods: This cross-sectional study comprised 5,116 men and 13,630 women without cardiovascular disease and without treatment for hypertension, and diabetes. Following sex-specific quartile classification, FMI and FFMI were combined into 16 groups. Elevated LDL-C levels were defined as LDL-C ≥ 140 mg/dL and/or dyslipidemia treatment. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the relationships between combined FMI and FFMI and elevated LDL-C levels., Results: Overall, elevated LDL-C levels were found in 1,538 (30.1%) men and 5,434 (39.9%) women. In all FFMI subgroups, a higher FMI was associated with elevated LDL-C levels. Conversely, FFMI was inversely associated with elevated LDL-C levels in most FMI subgroups. Furthermore, the groups with the highest FMI and lowest FFMI had higher odds ratios for elevated LDL-C levels than those with the lowest FMI and highest FFMI., Conclusions: Regardless of FFMI, FMI was positively associated with elevated LDL-C levels. Conversely, in the majority of FMI subgroups, FFMI was inversely associated with elevated LDL-C levels.

Background: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a severe mental illness with high relapse rates and high mortality. Depression not only severely limits psychosocial functioning but also reduces quality of life. It can also negatively affect patients' clinical parameters, including lipid metabolism markers. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of hyperlipidemia (HL) in patients with MDD who were hospitalized for the first time., Methods: In this study, we enrolled 981 patients with MDD who were hospitalized for the first time, collected their demographic data and biochemical indicators, and evaluated their clinical symptoms. We divided the patients into HL and non-HL subgroups based on whether they had co-morbid HL. We compared whether there were significant differences between the two groups regarding demographics and general clinical information., Results: A total of 708 of 981 MDD patients were described as being in the hyperlipidemic group, with an incidence of 72.17%. Clinical Global Impression Scale-Severity of Illness (CGI-SI) score and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) score are risk factors for co-morbid HL in patients with MDD. The area under the ROC curve for the CGI-SI and HAMD score and their combined discriminatory ability was approximately 63%, 67%, and 68%, respectively., Conclusion: The prevalence of HL was high in patients with MDD who were first hospitalized; Higher HAMD score and CGI-SI score were risk factors for the development of HL in MDD; The HAMD score and the CGI-SI score are predictive of the severity of HL., (© 2024. This study aimed to explore the link between various forms of obesity, including body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), and the risk of dyslipidemia among Chinese residents. We selected the study population through a multi-stage random sampling method from permanent residents aged 35 and older in Ganzhou. Obesity was categorized as non-obesity, general obesity, central obesity, or compound obesity according to established diagnostic criteria. We employed a logistic regression model to assess the relationship between different types of obesity and the risk of dyslipidemia. Additionally, we used the restricted cubic spline model to analyze the association between BMI, WC, and the risk of dyslipidemia. The study included 2030 residents aged 35 or older from Ganzhou, China. The prevalence of dyslipidemia was found to be 39.31%, with an age-standardized prevalence of 36.51%. The highest prevalence of dyslipidemia, 58.79%, was observed among those with compound obesity. After adjusting for confounding factors, we found that the risk of dyslipidemia in those with central and compound obesity was respectively 2.00 (95% CI 1.62-2.46) and 2.86 (95% CI 2.03-4.03) times higher than in the non-obese population. Moreover, the analysis using the restricted cubic spline model indicated a nearly linear association between BMI, WC, and the risk of dyslipidemia. The findings emphasize the significant prevalence of both dyslipidemia and obesity among adults aged 35 and above in Ganzhou, China. Notably, individuals with compound obesity are at a substantially increased risk of dyslipidemia. Objective: This study examined the prevalence of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) among Saudi patients with SLE and the general population and considered factors associated with such outcomes were taken into consideration., Methods: This is a cohort study evaluating the period prevalence of MACE from 2020 to 2023. The study used two datasets, namely the Saudi national prospective cohort for SLE patients and the Prospective Urban-Rural Epidemiology Study Saudi subcohort (PURE-Saudi) for the general population. Participants in both studies were monitored using a standardised protocol. MACE was defined as myocardial infarction (MI), stroke or angina. The analysis was adjusted for demographics, traditional cardiovascular risk factors and SLE diagnosis through logistic regression models., Results: The PURE and national SLE cohorts comprised 488 and 746 patients, respectively. Patients with SLE from the SLE cohort were younger (40.7±12.5 vs 49.5±8.6 years) and predominantly female (90.6% vs 41.6%). The prevalence of traditional risk factors was greater in the PURE cohort compared with the SLE cohort. These factors included dyslipidaemia (28.9% vs 49.4%), obesity (63% vs 85%) and diabetes (7.8% vs 27.2%), but not hypertension (19.3% vs 18.8%). MACE (defined as MI or stroke or venous thromboembolism or heart failure) occurred more frequently in patients with SLE (4.3% vs 1.6%, p=0.004). Older age and lupus diagnosis were independently associated with MACE after adjusting for conventional risk factors. The odds of MACE were significantly related to age and lupus diagnosis (p=0.00 and p=0.00, respectively), but not cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (p=0.83)., Conclusion: Patients with SLE have a significantly higher risk of developing MACE than the general population. This risk is not well explained by traditional risk factors, which may explain the failure of CVD risk scores to stratify patients with SLE adequately. Background: Mobile health technology's impact on cardiovascular risk factor control is not fully understood. This study evaluates the association between interaction with a mobile health application and change in cardiovascular risk factors., Methods and Results: Participants with hypertension with or without dyslipidemia enrolled in a workplace-deployed mobile health application-based cardiovascular risk self-management program between January 2018 and December 2022. Retrospective evaluation explored the influence of application engagement on change in blood pressure (BP), total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and weight. Multiple regression analyses examined the influence of guideline-based, nonpharmacological lifestyle-based digital coaching on outcomes adjusting for confounders. Of 102 475 participants, 49.1% were women. Median age was 53 (interquartile range, 43-61) years, BP was 134 (interquartile range, 124-144)/84 (interquartile range, 78-91) mm Hg, TC was 183 (interquartile range, 155-212) mg/dL, LDL-C was 106 (82-131) mg/dL, and body mass index was 30 (26-35) kg/m 2 . At 2 years, participants with baseline systolic BP ≥140 mm Hg reduced systolic BP by 18.6 (SEM, 0.3) mm Hg. At follow up, participants with baseline TC ≥240 mg/dL reduced TC by 65.7 (SEM, 4.6) mg/dL, participants with baseline LDL-C≥160 mg/dL reduced LDL-C by 66.6 (SEM, 6.2) mg/dL, and participants with baseline body mass index ≥30 kg/m 2 lost 12.0 (SEM, 0.3) pounds, or 5.1% of body weight. Interaction with digital coaching was associated with greater reduction in all outcomes., Conclusions: A mobile health application-based cardiovascular risk self-management program was associated with favorable reductions in BP, TC, LDL-C, and weight, highlighting the potential use of this technology in comprehensive cardiovascular risk factor control.

Background: Kidney cancer has become known as a metabolic disease. However, there is limited evidence linking metabolic syndrome (MetS) with kidney cancer risk. This study aimed to investigate the association between MetS and its components and the risk of kidney cancer., Methods: UK Biobank data was used in this study. MetS was defined as having three or more metabolic abnormalities, while pre-MetS was defined as the presence of one or two metabolic abnormalities. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for kidney cancer risk by MetS category were calculated using multivariable Cox proportional hazards models. Subgroup analyses were conducted for age, sex, BMI, smoking status and drinking status. The joint effects of MetS and genetic factors on kidney cancer risk were also analyzed., Results: This study included 355,678 participants without cancer at recruitment. During a median follow-up of 11 years, 1203 participants developed kidney cancer. Compared to the metabolically healthy group, participants with pre-MetS (HR= 1.36, 95% CI: 1.06-1.74) or MetS (HR= 1. 70, 95% CI: 1.30-2.23) had a significantly greater risk of kidney cancer. This risk increased with the increasing number of MetS components (P for trend < 0.001). The combination of hypertension, dyslipidemia and central obesity contributed to the highest risk of kidney cancer (HR= 3.03, 95% CI: 1.91-4.80). Compared with participants with non-MetS and low genetic risk, those with MetS and high genetic risk had the highest risk of kidney cancer (HR= 1. 74, 95% CI: 1.41-2.14)., Conclusions: Both pre-MetS and MetS status were positively associated with kidney cancer risk. The risk associated with kidney cancer varied by combinations of MetS components. Background: A recent cross-sectional study showed that both comorbidities and mortality in patients with adrenal incidentaloma (AI) are tied to sex. However, few longitudinal studies evaluated the development of arterial hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and bone impairment in patients with AI. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of sex in the development of these comorbidities during long-term follow-up., Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 189 patients (120 females, 69 males) with AI, from four referral centers in Italy and Croatia. Clinical characteristics, comorbidities and cortisol after 1-mg dexamethasone suppression test (1-mg DST) were assessed at baseline and at last follow-up visit (LFUV). Median follow-up was 52 (Interquartile Range 25-86) months., Results: The rates of arterial hypertension and hyperglycemia increased over time both in females (65.8% at baseline versus 77.8% at LFUV, p =0.002; 23.7% at baseline versus 39.6% at LFUV, p <0.001; respectively) and males (58.0% at baseline versus 69.1% at LFUV, p =0.035; 33.8% at baseline versus 54.0% at LFUV, p <0.001; respectively). Patients were stratified in two groups using 1.8 µg/dl as cut-off of cortisol following 1-mg DST: non-functional adrenal tumors (NFAT) and tumors with mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS). In the NFAT group (99 patients, females 62.6%), at baseline, we did not observe any difference in clinical characteristics and comorbidities between males and females. At LFUV, males showed a higher frequency of hyperglycemia than females (57.6% versus 33.9%, p =0.03). In the MACS group (89 patients, females 64.0%), at baseline, the prevalence of hypertension, hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia was similar between sexes, despite females were younger (60, IQR 55-69 versus 67.5, IQR 61-73, years; p =0.01). Moreover, females presented higher rates of bone impairment (89.3% versus 54.5%, p =0.02) than males. At LFUV, a similar sex-related pattern was observed., Conclusion: Patients with AI frequently develop arterial hypertension and hyperglycemia and should be periodically checked for these comorbidities, regardless of sex. Cardiovascular disease risk throughout the life course is increased by abnormal blood lipid levels in youth. The dietary glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) during adolescence might be related to abnormal blood lipids. This study aimed to analyze the association between dietary GI, GL and dyslipidemia in adolescents from two marginalized regions of Chiapas, Mexico. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 213 adolescents. Food intake was assessed using 24 h recalls. The association between dyslipidemia and dietary GI or GL was tested by using logistic regression models. Low HDL-c was the most prevalent risk factor (47.4%), followed by hypertriglyceridemia (25.4%). In this population, overall dietary GI was not associated with dyslipidemia. A high dietary GL was associated with 2.39 higher odds of low HDL-c (95% CI: 1.21-4.74) when compared to low GL. Female adolescents with high dietary GL had 3.20 higher odds of hypertriglyceridemia (95% CI: 1.03-9.88), whereas no association was found for males. No associations were observed between overall dietary GL and total cholesterol or LDL-c. In adolescents from urban and rural communities in Chiapas, a high dietary GL was associated with a detrimental effect on HDL-c. In female adolescents, high GL was associated with hypertriglyceridemia.

Preterm labor, a condition associated with various risk factors such as a history of prior preterm birth (PTB) and multiple pregnancies, has recently seen an increasing focus on its potential link with dyslipidemia. This study aims to investigate the relationship between dyslipidemia in expectant mothers and the risks of PTB. We studied 6963 mothers who gave birth at the International Peace Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine in 2020, among which, 437 women had PTB. We extracted clinical and lipid data from electronic records, using multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic spline models to explore the link between lipid concentrations (by quartiles) in pregnancy stages and PTB risk. The PTB rate was 6.3%. Early pregnancy in the PTB group showed elevated ApoA, ApoB, CHOL, LDL, and TG levels compared to controls (all P < 0.05). Late pregnancy showed no notable lipid differences. Multivariable analysis revealed elevated ApoA, TG, higher age, BMI ≥ 28 kg/m 2 , hypertension, assisted reproductive technology and gestational diabetes as PTB risk factors (all P < 0.05). After adjustments, higher ApoA, ApoB, CHOL and TG levels correlated with increased PTB risk. Using the lowest quartile, the adjusted ORs for early pregnancy's highest quartile of ApoA, ApoB, CHOL and TG were 1.348, 1.442, 1.442 and 2.156, respectively. Our findings indicate that dyslipemia in early pregnancy, including elevated levels of ApoA, ApoB, CHOL and TG, are associated with PTB. Background: The 2013 ACC/AHA Guideline was a paradigm shift in lipid management and identified the four statin-benefit groups. Many have studied the guideline's potential impact, but few have investigated its potential long-term impact on MACE. Furthermore, most studies also ignored the confounding effect from the earlier release of generic atorvastatin in Dec 2011., Methods: To evaluate the potential (long-term) impact of the 2013 ACC/AHA Guideline release in Nov 2013 in the U.S., we investigated the association of the 2013 ACC/AHA Guideline with the trend changes in 5-Year MACE survival and three other statin-related outcomes (statin use, optimal statin use, and statin adherence) while controlling for generic atorvastatin availability using interrupted time series analysis, called the Chow's test. Specifically, we conducted a retrospective study using U.S. nationwide de-identified claims and electronic health records from Optum Labs Database Warehouse (OLDW) to follow the trends of 5-Year MACE survival and statin-related outcomes among four statin-benefit groups that were identified in the 2013 ACC/AHA Guideline. Then, Chow's test was used to discern trend changes between generic atorvastatin availability and guideline potential impact., Results: 197,021 patients were included (ASCVD: 19,060; High-LDL: 33,907; Diabetes: 138,159; High-ASCVD-Risk: 5,895). After the guideline release, the long-term trend (slope) of 5-Year MACE Survival for the Diabetes group improved significantly (P = 0.002). Optimal statin use for the ASCVD group also showed immediate improvement (intercept) and long-term positive changes (slope) after the release (P < 0.001). Statin uses did not have significant trend changes and statin adherence remained unchanged in all statin-benefit groups. Although no other statistically significant trend changes were found, overall positive trend change or no changes were observed after the 2013 ACC/AHA Guideline release., Conclusions: The 2013 ACA/AHA Guideline release is associated with trend improvements in the long-term MACE Survival for Diabetes group and optimal statin use for ASCVD group. These significant associations might indicate a potential positive long-term impact of the 2013 ACA/AHA Guideline on better health outcomes for primary prevention groups and an immediate potential impact on statin prescribing behaviors in higher-at-risk groups. Background: Alcohol consumption by children and adolescents is receiving increasing attention. It may cause dyslipidemia, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. However, the association between alcohol consumption and blood lipids in children and adolescents is unclear, and so we aimed to characterize this association., Methods: Data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey were extracted from children and adolescents aged 7-18 years for whom information was available on alcohol consumption. The population was divided into drinking and nondrinking groups. The χ2, Student's t, or Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare groups. Univariate and multivariate linear regression and propensity score matching (PSM) analysis were used to identify the association between alcohol consumption and blood lipids., Results: This study included 408 children and adolescents with 35 drinkers and 373 nondrinkers. The drinkers had significantly lower values of total cholesterol (TC) (3.8 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 3.5 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.002) and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (1.3 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 1.2 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.007), but not for low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (2.1 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 2.0 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.092) or triglyceride (TG) (0.9 mmol/L for nondrinkers versus 0.8 mmol/L for drinkers, p = 0.21). The univariate and multivariate analyses led to the same conclusions. After PSM there was still a significant negative association between alcohol consumption and TC or HDL-C., Conclusion: Alcohol consumption in children and adolescents exhibited significant negative associated with TC and HDL-C, but not with LDL-C or TG. These findings need to be confirmed in future prospective research, and the health effects of blood lipid changes caused by drinking in children and adolescents need to be clarified., (© 2024. Introduction: Dyslipidemia is a common public health problem in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) who are receiving antiretroviral therapy and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. Although evidence indicates that the prevalence of dyslipidemia is high, estimated pooled data are not well documented. Therefore, we aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of dyslipidemia in adult people living with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy in Ethiopia., Method: We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature. The following databases and grey literature were searched: PubMed, WorldCat, ScienceDirect, DOAG, African Journals Online, Google Scholar, and African Index Medicine. We included all comparative epidemiological studies that reported the prevalence of high concentration of total cholesterol, triglycerides, and low density lipoprotein, and low concentration of high density lipoprotein cholesterol that were published between January 2003 and July 2023. The random effects model was used to pool the outcome of interest. Additionally, subgrouping, sensitivity analyses, and funnel plots were performed. R software Version 4.2.1 was used for statistical analysis., Result: Seventeen studies with a total of 3929 participants were included in the meta-analysis. The pooled prevalence of dyslipidemia, high total cholesterol, high triglyceride, elevated level of low density lipoprotein and low level of high density lipoprotein cholesterol were 69.32% (95% CI: 63.33, 74.72), 39.78% (95%CI: 32.12, 47.96), 40.32% (95%CI: 34.56, 46.36), 28.58% (95%CI: 21.81, 36.46), and 36.17% (95%CI: 28.82, 44.24), respectively. Objectives: Exposure to cigarette smoke introduces a large amount of nicotine into the bloodstream through the lungs. So, smoking can be a risk factor for many diseases. The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of active and passive cigarette smoke on the blood lipid profile and dyslipidemia., Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed on 5052 individuals who participated in the recruitment phase of the Shahedieh cohort study. A logistic regression model was used to investigate the relationship between smoking exposure status and lipid profiles., Results: The prevalence of abnormal low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C), abnormal HDL-C, abnormal total cholesterol (TC), abnormal triglyceride (TG), and dyslipidemia were 254 (5.00%), 562 (11.10%), 470 (9.30%), 1008 (20.00%), and 1527 (30.20%), respectively. Adjusting for confounders, it was observed that current smokers had higher odds of having abnormal HDL-C [OR (95% CI), 2.90 (2.28-3.69)], abnormal TG [OR (95% CI), 1.71 (1.38-2.13)] and dyslipidemia [OR (95% CI), 1.86 (1.53-2.25)]. Ex-smokers also had greater odds of abnormal HDL-C [OR (95% CI), 1.51 (1.06-2.16)] compared to non-smokers who were not exposed to cigarette smoke., Conclusions: The findings indicated that current smokers had higher TG and lower HDL. So, necessary measures should be taken to reduce smoking. The findings also showed that the prevalence of abnormal TG and HDL in ex-smokers was lower than in current smokers. Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between hyperuricemia and the risks of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in patients with osteoarthritis (OA)., Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on 3,971 patients using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database between 1999 and 2018. OA was diagnosed through specific questions and responses. The weighted COX regression models were used to explore the factors associated with all-cause mortality/CVD mortality in OA patients. Subgroup analyses were conducted based on age, gender, hypertension, dyslipidemia, CVD, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were measured as the evaluation indexes., Results: During the duration of follow-up time (116.38 ± 2.19 months), 33.69% (1,338 patients) experienced all-cause mortality, and 11.36% (451 patients) died from CVD. Hyperuricemia was associated with higher risks of all-cause mortality (HR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.06-1.41, P = 0.008) and CVD mortality (HR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.02-1.72, P = 0.036) in OA patients. Subgroup analyses showed that hyperuricemia was related to the risk of all-cause mortality in OA patients aged >65 years (HR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.01-1.36, P = 0.042), in all male patients (HR: 1.41, 95% CI: 1.10-1.80, P = 0.006), those diagnosed with hypertension (HR: 1.17, 95% CI: 1.01-1.37, P = 0.049), dyslipidemia (HR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.01-1.39, P = 0.041), CVD (HR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.09-1.55, P = 0.004), and CKD (HR: 1.31, 95% CI: 1.01-1.70, P = 0.046). The association between hyperuricemia and a higher risk of CVD mortality was found in OA patients aged ≤ 65 years (HR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.06-3.41, P = 0.032), who did not suffer from diabetes (HR: 1.36, 95% CI: 1.01-1.86, P = 0.048), who did not suffer from hypertension (HR: 2.56, 95% CI: 1.12-5.86, P = 0.026), and who did not suffer from dyslipidemia (HR: 2.39, 95% CI: 1.15-4.97, P = 0.020)., Conclusion: These findings emphasize the importance of monitoring serum uric acid levels in OA patients for potentially reducing mortality associated with the disease., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Hao et al. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the impacts of continuity of care (COC) between patients and multiple providers, i.e., doctors and community pharmacists, on clinical and economic outcomes., Methods: This is a retrospective cohort study and analyzed Korean national claims data for ambulatory care setting between 2007 and 2018. Patients with dyslipidemia newly diagnosed in 2008 were identified. COC between providers and patients was computed using the continuity of care index (COCI). Based on COCIs, the study patients were allocated to four groups: HM/HP, HM/LP, LM/HP, and LM/LP. Each symbol represents H for high, L for low, M for doctor, and P for pharmacist. The primary study outcome was the incidence of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD)., Results: 126,710 patients were included. Percentages of patients in the four study groups were as follows: HM/HP 35%, HM/LP 19%, LM/HP 12%, and LM/LP 34%. During the seven-year outcome period, 8,337 patients (6.6%) developed an ASCVD, and percentages in the study groups were as follows; HM/HP 6.2%, HM/LP 6.3%, LM/HP 6.8%, and LM/LP 7.1%. After adjusting for confounding covariates, only the LM/LP group had a significantly higher risk of ASCVD than the reference group, HM/HP (aHR = 1.16 [95% confidence interval = 1.10~1.22]). The risk of inappropriate medication adherence gradually increased 1.03-fold in the HM/LP group, 1.67-fold in the LM/HP, and 2.26-fold in the LM/LP group versus the HM/HP group after adjusting for covariates. Disease-related costs were lower in the HM/HP and LM/HP groups., Conclusions: The study shows that patients with high relational care continuity with doctors and pharmacists achieved better clinical results and utilized health care less, resulting in reduced expenses. Transitional medicine refers to the seamless continuity of medical care for patients with childhood-onset diseases as they grow into adulthood. The transition of care must be seamless in medical treatment as the patients grow and in other medical aids such as subsidies for medical expenses in the health care system. Inappropriate transitional care, either medical or social, directly causes poorer prognosis for many early-onset diseases, including primary dyslipidemia caused by genetic abnormalities. Many primary dyslipidemias are designated as intractable diseases in the Japanese health care system for specific medical aids, as having no curative treatment and requiring enormous treatment costs for lipid management and prevention of complications. However, there are problems in transitional medicine for primary dyslipidemia in Japan. As for the medical treatment system, the diagnosis rate remains low due to the shortage of specialists, their insufficient link with generalists and other field specialists, and poor linkage between pediatricians and physicians for adults. In the medical care system, there is a mismatch of diagnostic criteria of primary dyslipidemias between children and adults for medical care expense subsidization, as between The Program for the Specific Pediatric Chronic Diseases and the Program for Designated Adult Intractable Diseases. This could lead some patients subsidized in their childhood to no longer be under the coverage of the aids after transition. This review intends to describe these issues in transitional medicine of primary dyslipidemia in Japan as a part of the efforts to resolve the problems by the Committee on Primary Dyslipidemia under the Research Program on Rare and Intractable Disease of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan.

Dyslipidemia is linked to various health complications, including cardiovascular disease and inflammation. This study aimed to assess the association between smoking and lipid profile in the Tabari cohort population. Data from the Tabari Cohort Study involving 4,149 men were analyzed. A standardized questionnaire collected smoking history, while blood samples measured lipid levels and anthropometric measurements were recorded. Statistical analysis utilized chi-square tests and logistic regression, adjusting for potential confounders. The prevalence of smoking was 893 (21.52%; urban: 20.6%, mountainous: 23.8%, significant level: .024). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) of low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) among smokers 1.48 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.25-1.77, p < .001) was the same as non-smokers. The adjusted OR of high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) in men with 1 to 10, 11 to 20, and more than 20 cigarettes per day was 0.95 (95% CI: 0.73-1.25), 1.30 (95% CI: 0.99-1.71), and 2.64 (95% CI: 1.32-5.27) and low HDL was equal to 1.34 (95% CI: 1.06-1.68), 1.61 (95% CI: 1.26-2.05), and 2.24 (95% CI: 1.13-4.42) compared with non-smokers, respectively. The study findings indicate that smoking is associated with lower HDL levels, even after adjusting for potential confounders. The odds of low HDL and high LDL increases with higher smoking intensity. The low HDL and high LDL levels in individuals smoking over 20 cigarettes/day, respectively, show a 2.24-fold and a 2.64-fold increased odds compared to non-smokers. Background: This study aimed to examine the prevalence and associated factors of malnutrition in older community-dwellers and explore the interaction between associated factors., Methods: A total of 474,467 older community-dwellers aged 65 or above were selected in Guangzhou, China. We used a two-step methodology to detect the associated factors of malnutrition and constructed logistic regression models to explore the influencing factors and interactive effects on three patterns of malnutrition., Results: The prevalence of malnutrition was 22.28%. Older adults with both hypertension and diabetes (RERI = 0.13), both meat or fish diet and hypertension (RERI = 0.79), and both meat or fish diet and diabetes (RERI = 0.81) had positive additive interaction effects on the risk of obesity, whereas those on a vegetarian diet with hypertension (RERI = -0.25) or diabetes (RERI = -0.19) had negative additive interaction effects. Moreover, the interactions of physical activity with a meat or fish diet (RERI = -0.84) or dyslipidemia (RERI = -0.09) could lower the risk of obesity., Conclusions: Malnutrition was influenced by different health factors, and there were interactions between these influencing factors. Pertinent dietary instruction should be given according to different nutritional status indexes and the prevalence of metabolic diseases to avoid the occurrences of malnutrition among older adults.

Background: Hearing loss (HL) is a worldwide public health issue for which the role of dyslipidemia has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to use the atherogenic index of plasma (AIP), a well-established serum lipid marker, to investigate the association of dyslipidemia with HL among the general population., Methods: Participants (n = 3267) from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database (2005-2012, 2015-2018) were included in the present study. The AIP was calculated based on the following formula: log10 (triglycerides/high-density lipoprotein cholesterol). HL was defined as a pure-tone average of at least 20 dBHL in the better ear. Weighted multivariable logistic regression, subgroup analysis, generalized additive model, and threshold analysis were adopted to reveal the association between the AIP and HL., Results: In this study of US adults, a positive association was found between the AIP and high-frequency HL. However, the association between the AIP and low-frequency HL was not as strong. In addition, a reverse L-shaped curve with an inflection point located at -0.27 was detected between the AIP and high-frequency HL, followed by a significant positive association after the inflection point., Conclusions: The potential of the AIP as a bioindicator for high-frequency HL is noteworthy, and maintaining an AIP value below a certain threshold might provide beneficial outcomes in the management of high-frequency HL., (© 2024. Background: Dyslipidemia management is a cornerstone in cardiovascular disease prevention and relies heavily on patient adherence to lifestyle modifications and medications. Numerous cholesterol patient education materials are available online, but it remains unclear whether these resources are suitable for the majority of North American adults given the prevalence of low health literacy. This review aimed to (1) identify printable cholesterol patient education materials through an online search, and (2) evaluate the readability, understandability, and actionability of each resource to determine its utility in practice., Methods and Results: We searched the MEDLINE database for peer-reviewed educational materials and the websites of Canadian and American national health organizations for gray literature. Readability was measured using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, and scores between fifth- and sixth-grade reading levels were considered adequate . Understandability and actionability were scored using the Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool and categorized as superior (>80%), adequate (50%-70%), or inadequate (<50%). Our search yielded 91 results that were screened for eligibility. Among the 22 educational materials included in the study, 15 were identified through MEDLINE, and 7 were from websites. The readability across all materials averaged an 11th-grade reading level (Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level=11.9±2.59). The mean±SD understandability and actionability scores were 82.8±6.58% and 40.9±28.60%, respectively., Conclusions: The readability of online cholesterol patient education materials consistently exceeds the health literacy level of the average North American adult. Many resources also inadequately describe action items for individuals to self-manage their cholesterol, representing an implementation gap in cardiovascular disease prevention.
