While ChatGPT has recently become very popular, AI has a long history and philosophy. This paper intends to explore the promises and pitfalls of the Generative Pre-trained Transformer (GPT) AI and potentially future technologies by adopting a speculative methodology. Speculative future narratives with a specific focus on educational contexts are provided in an attempt to identify emerging themes and discuss their implications for education in the 21st century. Affordances of (using) AI in Education (AIEd) and possible adverse effects are identified and discussed which emerge from the narratives. It is argued that now is the best of times to define human vs AI contribution to education because AI can accomplish more and more educational activities that used to be the prerogative of human educators. Vibratory analysis allows us to interpret the fundamental conditions of rotating machines. This interpretation is useful in the diagnosis of faults. In practice, the vibratory measurements made by sensors come from a mixture of vibratory sources corresponding to different machine components. Thus, it becomes hard to conduct state interpretation for each individual component. This fact leads us to consider the inverse problem, reconstruction of the vibratory sources based on measurements. However, the inversion is unfortunately unstable. To limit the instability, previous studies proposed use of a large number of sensors and the processing of measurements using regularization methods. However, regularization requires estimation of the regularization parameter, which is a hard task. In addition, regularization can remove some vibratory sources. Moreover, the sensor positions are 'random', but the stability is significantly influenced by the sensor positions and by the mixture properties described by modal analysis. This article proposes to link modal analysis and stability. This link allows us to reduce the number of sensors and to avoid regularization methods. Thus, two complementary approaches are developed to determine optimal sensor positions: A numerical approach with a numerical updated model and an experimental approach using modal analysis. Thanks to the use of these optimal positions, stability is improved and vibratory sources are correctly reconstructed. Key words: Vibratory sources, inverse problems, modal analysis, 1. - Abstract
Rolling elements bearings (REBs) is one of the most sensitive components and the common failure unit in mechanical equipment. Bearings failure prognostics, which aims to achieve an effective way to handle the increasing requirements for higher reliability and in the same time reduce unnecessary costs, has been an area of extensive research. The accurate prediction of bearings Remaining Useful Life (RUL) is indispensable for safe and lifetime-optimized operations. To monitor this vital component and planning repair work, a new intelligent method based on Wavelet Packet Decomposition (WPD) and deep learning networks is proposed in this paper. Firstly, features extraction from WPD used as input data. Secondly, these selected features are fed into deep Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to construct the Health Indicator (HI). This study focuses on analysing the relationships such as correlations between the HI and temperature. We develop a solution for the Connectiomics contest dataset of bearings under different operating conditions and severity of defects. The performance of the proposed method is verified by four bearing data sets collected from experimental setup called “PRONOSTIA”. The results show that the health indicator obtains fairly high monotonicity and correlation values and it is beneficial to bearing life prediction. In addition, it is experimentally demonstrated that the proposed method is able to achieve better performance than a traditional neural network based method.

6. From Chaos Towards Sense: A Learner-Centric Narrative Virtual Learning Space

Throughout educational settings there are a range of open-focused learning activities along with those that are much more closed and structured. the plethora of opportunities creates a confusing melee of opportunities for teachers as they attempt to create activities that will engage and motivate learners. In this chapter, the authors demonstrate a learner-centric narrative virtual learning space, where the unrestricted exploration is combined with mechanisms to monitor the student and provide indirect guidance through elements in the learning space. The instructional designer defines the scope of the story in which the teacher and learner create narratives (a sequence of actions and milestones to complete a given task), which can be compared, assessed, and awarded with badges and scores. The model is described using an example from logistics, where incoming orders have to be fulfilled by finding the good and delivering it to a given location in a warehouse. Preliminary studies showed that the model is able to engage the learner and create an intrinsic motivation and therewith curiosity to drive the self-paced learning.

- Abstract
Immersive spaces are innately flexible. However, for learners, some constraints and scaffolding may often be valuable. This paper looks at immersive spaces as soft and hard technologies. Soft technologies are technologies enabling creative and flexible use, while hard technologies embed processes that limit creativity but provide efficiency and freedom from error. Technologies may be softened or hardened by assembly. For instance, if your Learning Management System (LMS) has no wiki, then it may be softened by adding one from outside the system. If your wiki has no assessment management system, then it may be hardened by using a LMS. For learning, the intrinsically soft nature of immersive spaces sometimes requires scaffolded hardening. This paper provides an example of an ongoing project that realizes these soft and hard technologies in an immersive virtual space and discusses the rich potential of such spaces for technology assembly.

- Abstract
This paper identifies the importance of assessment for student learning, especially "authentic assessment". While recognising that authenticity can be judged against the alignment of assessment with learning goals, and of assessment with real-life activities, the paper asserts a new element: the degree to which the Internet is part of the everyday lives of most university students. Thus, a third form of authenticity emerges when assessment is aligned with students' use of the Internet for simultaneous informal and formal learning, and the nature of the Internet as a place of active knowledge networking, involving co-creation of information and knowledgeable content (a consequence of the emergence of Web 2.0). The paper argues that developments in assessment using the Internet will only be authentic if they take account of the way the Internet functions outside of higher education, rather than seeing it as an educational technology divorced from its own authenticity.

The fault diagnosis and prognosis of low speed machines remains a difficult problem despite remarkable advances in the conditional monitoring domain. The Rolling-element bearing is a vital part of these machines and its failure is one of the main causes of machine breakdown. In order to have an efficient maintenance strategy, fault diagnosis of a bearing and time estimation of its remaining useful life is needed. However, conventional vibration analysis at very low speeds generally fails to detect vibrations issued from a faulty bearing due to its low energy, high and variable loading conditions and to the noisy environment generated by other mechanical components of low speed machines such as gearing systems. In this work, instantaneous angular speed (IAS)-based fault diagnosis is introduced in order to compensate for the shortcoming of conventional monitoring techniques since it is strictly synchronized to shaft rotation and much less dependent on the transfer path between the defect and the sensor contrary to vibration and acoustic emission analysis. At very low speeds and in the case of a seeded spall on the bearing’s race, the shaft IAS reveals the shaft dynamical behavior when the rolling element passes into the spall. It is proven that this behavior is different when entering the spall than when exiting. The determination of entrance and exit moments allows a precise fault size estimation which is a critical step for bearing prognosis. The proposed fault size estimation method is tested on different seeded spall widths at different low speeds. The results gave a satisfactory fault width estimation and show that IAS measurement is a promising tool for the health monitoring of very low speed machines. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This paper is concerned with the application of Web 2.0 technologies within a conventional institutional learning setting. After considering the affordances of Web 2.0 technologies vs Web 1.0 technologies and a framework for viewing social software in terms of groups, networks and collectives, we describe an instance of trying to use Elgg, a rich social application, to support a distance-taught course within a conventional face-to-face university. A number of issues are identified, some of which are related to Elgg's interface but the biggest of which relate to the tensions between top-down and bottom-up control and the shifting contexts of personal, group, network and collective modes of engagement. These problems suggest that, in their current form, social technologies pose intractable difficulties in information organisation and retrieval when used for formal learning. We propose a range of solutions that make use of the wisdom of the crowd combined with human intervention. This paper addresses and extends themes explored in SIRTEL 07. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Bromobenzoquinones and 2,4,6-tribromophenol belong to disinfection or chlorination by-products than can be formed in bromide-rich waters during chlorination or chloramination. Due to their high toxicities, sensitive and cost-effective analytical methods are necessary to detect and quantify them in various environmental matrices. A determination method of 2,5-dibromo-1,4-benzoquinone, 2,6-dibromo-3,5-dimethyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 2,6-dibromo-3-chloro-5-methyl-1,4-benzoquinone, 2,3,5,6-tetrabromo-1,4-benzoquinone and, 2,4,6-tribromophenol was developed using solid-phase extraction and electron capture detector-gas chromatography separation and detection (SPE-GC-ECD). Preservation of the four bromobenzoquinones with ascorbic acid allow to stabilize them into their bromohydroquinone analogues and to quench residual chlorine. Efficiency of different sorbents was tested and extraction and elution parameters were optimized by use of an experimental design. The recovery rates of each of the five compounds studied were between 59 and 101.4 %. The limits of detection (LODs) of the SPE-GC-ECD method were between 7 and 22 ng L
-1 . - Abstract
Background: Arterial and venous cardiovascular conditions, such as coronary artery disease (CAD), peripheral artery disease (PAD), and venous thromboembolism (VTE), are genetically correlated. Interrogating underlying mechanisms may shed light on disease mechanisms. In this study, we aimed to identify (1) epidemiological and (2) causal, genetic relationships between metabolites and CAD, PAD, and VTE., Methods: We used metabolomic data from 95 402 individuals in the UK Biobank, excluding individuals with prevalent cardiovascular disease. Cox proportional-hazards models estimated the associations of 249 metabolites with incident disease. Bidirectional 2-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) estimated the causal effects between metabolites and outcomes using genome-wide association summary statistics for metabolites (n=118 466 from the UK Biobank), CAD (n=184 305 from CARDIoGRAMplusC4D 2015), PAD (n=243 060 from the Million Veterans Project), and VTE (n=650 119 from the Million Veterans Project). Multivariable MR was performed in subsequent analyses., Results: We found that 196, 115, and 74 metabolites were associated ( P <0.001) with CAD, PAD, and VTE, respectively. Further interrogation of these metabolites with MR revealed 94, 34, and 9 metabolites with potentially causal effects on CAD, PAD, and VTE, respectively. There were 21 metabolites common to CAD and PAD and 4 common to PAD and VTE. Many putatively causal metabolites included lipoprotein traits with heterogeneity across different sizes and lipid subfractions. Small VLDL (very-low-density lipoprotein) particles increased the risk for CAD while large VLDL particles decreased the risk for VTE. We identified opposing directions of CAD and PAD effects for cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations within HDLs (high-density lipoproteins). Subsequent sensitivity analyses including multivariable MR revealed several metabolites with robust, potentially causal effects of VLDL particles on CAD., Conclusions: While common vascular conditions are associated with overlapping metabolomic profiles, MR prioritized the role of specific lipoprotein species for potential pharmacological targets to maximize benefits in both arterial and venous beds., Competing Interests: P. 19. Participatory environmental health research: A tool to explore the socio-exposome in a major european industrial zone.

Objectives: We show that participatory research approaches can be a useful tool across disciplines and data collection methods to explore the socio-exposome near one of the largest industrial harbors in Europe. We analyzed resident involvement in each project and their capacity to affect structural changes., Methods: Longitudinal participatory environmental monitoring studies on lichens, petunias, aquatic systems and groundwater were conducted under the program VOCE (Volunteers for the Citizens' Observation of the Environment), which mobilized nearly 100 volunteers to collect and report data. A community-based participatory health survey, Fos EPSEAL was also carried out during the same period. We describe citizens' involvement in each study following Davis and Ramirez-Andreotta's (2021) 'best practice' grid. We also use residents' insights to refine understanding of the socio-exposome., Results: The region is significantly impacted by industrial pollution and fenceline communities are disproportionately exposed. The community-based participatory health survey documented negative health outcomes among the residents, including a higher prevalence of chronic symptoms and diabetes (e.g., 11.9%) in the Fos-Berre Lagoon region than in other communities. - Abstract
2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP) is implied in the production of brominated flame retardants but is also a major chlorination by-product in seawater. A growing number of studies indicate that TBP is highly toxic to the marine biota, but the contribution of anthropogenic sources among natural production is still under question concerning its bioaccumulation in marine organisms. Here, several water sampling campaigns were carried out in the industrialized Gulf of Fos (northwestern Mediterranean Sea, France) and clearly showed the predominant incidence of industrial chlorination discharges on the TBP levels in water, at the 1-10 ng L
-1 level in average and reaching up to 580 ng L-1 near the outlets. The bioaccumulation of TBP was measured in 90 biota samples from the Gulf of Fos. The concentrations found in European conger muscle tissues (140-1000 ng g-1 lipid weight, in average), purple sea urchin gonads (830-880 ng g-1 lipid weight, in average), and Mediterranean mussel body (1500-2000 ng g-1 lipid weight, in average) were above all published references. Significant correlations with fish length (European conger) and gonad somatic index (purple sea urchin) were also identified. Comparatively, fish, urchins and mussels from other Mediterranean sites analyzed within this study showed a lower bioaccumulation level of TBP, consistently with what found elsewhere. Industrial outflows were thus identified as hotspots for TBP in seawater and marine organisms. The environmental risk assessment indicated a high potential toxicity in the industrial Gulf of Fos, in particular near the outlets, and a limited threat to human but toxicological references are lacking., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier Ltd.
