Abstract

The Chukar (Alectoris chukar cypriotes) is the most common game bird in Cyprus. Since 1990 the Cypriot Government has established a restocking program with captive-reared birds. However, this program has not been guaranteed by checking the genetic nature of wild and farmed samples, either in the areas controlled by the Cypriot Government or in northern Cyprus. The sequencing of both Cytochrome-b and Control Region of the mitochondrial DNA was carried out for 61 Cypriot representatives and 14 specimens of the same subspecies from Crete and Israel. Only the A. chukar maternal lineage was found. A partitioning of Cypriot specimens among different clades was not reliably supported, whereas robust bootstrap values weighted for an evolutionary divergence between Cypriot and Cretan Chukars. An overall genetic homogeny of the Cypriot populations was disclosed, whatever their status (captive vs. wild stocks) and origin (Government controlled vs. occupied areas) would be, a higher nucleotide diversity of the wild vs. captive representatives notwithstanding.

2. Maternal Deaths due to Obstetric Hemorrhage in Padang, Indonesia: A Case-Control Study

Abstract

Abstract Objective: To analyse the association between determinants of maternal deaths and obstetric haemorrhage in Padang, Indonesia. Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted in Padang, Indonesia from 2015 to 2019. Maternal deaths that occurred due to obstetric hemorrhage in Padang Health Department was compared to three mothers who survived from obstetric hemorrhage (controls) in Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital, Padang, Indonesia. Results: There were 20 deaths caused by obstetric hemorrhage during 2015 to 2019. Death records could only be found in 16 cases. The most common etiology of obstetric hemorrhage was uterine atony (62.5%). Determinants associated with maternal deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage were interval between pregnancies (p=0.045; OR:10.846), history of previous labour (p=0.003; OR:8.556), and antenatal care (p=0.003; OR:21.364). Age, parity, birth attendant, and mother’s educational level were not significantly associated with maternal deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage. Conclusion: Uterine atony was the most frequent etiology of maternal deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage. There was a significant association between pregnancy intervals, history of previous labour, and antenatal care with maternal deaths due to obstetric hemorrhage. Djamil Padang. Analisis data menggunakan uji Chi-square. Hasil: Ada 20 kasus kematian akibat perdarahan obstetri selama tahun 2015–2019. Catatan kematian hanya dapat diperoleh pada 16 kasus. Etiologi terbanyak kematian akibat perdarahan obstetri ialah atonia uteri. Determinan yang berhubungan dengan kematian akibat perdarahan obstetri ialah jarak kehamilan (p=0.045; OR:10.846), riwayat persalinan sebelumnya (p=0.003; OR:8.556), dan antenatal care (p=0.003; OR:21.364). Tidak terdapat hubungan yang signifikan antara usia, paritas, penolong persalinan, dan tingkat pendidikan ibu dengan kematian maternal akibat perdarahan obstetri. Kesimpulan: Atonia uteri merupakan etiologi tertinggi kematian maternal akibat perdarahan obstetri. Abstract

ABSTRACT Koi fish is one of the species included in the intensification program of ornamental fish production. Production of koi has only reached 82.04% of total national production target thus making it potential for development. The objective of the study was to assess additional financial benefit of production increment through stocking pattern modification. Present research was performed using case study method on Pokdakan PBC Fish Farm (PPFF), koi fish farmers in Sukabumi. Financial analysis consisted of business analysis, investment criteria, and sensitivity. Stocking pattern management could increase ornamental fish production and its benefit margin up to 1.5 times higher. That investment criteria has shown NPV at value of IDR3,824 million, net BCR 4.96, IRR 86.0%, and PP 1.7 years. Koi fish farming was sensitive to a decline in survival rate and insensitive to the rise of formulated feed price. Capaian dari target produksi ikan koi yang ditetapkan pemerintah hanya mencapai 82,04 %, sehingga budidaya ikan koi potensial untuk dikembangkan dan ditingkatkan produksinya. Metode yang digunakan adalah studi kasus pada kelompok pembudidaya ikan hias koi PPFF di Sukabumi. Analisis finansial yang digunakan meliputi analisis usaha, kriteria investasi dan sensitivitas. Pengaturan pola tebar dapat meningkatkan jumlah produksi ikan hias dan marjin keuntungan hingga 1,5 kali. Analisis kriteria investasi menghasilkan nilai NPV sebesar Rp3.824 juta, net B/C 4,94, IRR 86,0% dan PP 1,7 tahun. Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic carries a high burden of morbidity and mortality worldwide. We aimed to identify possible predictors of in-hospital major cardiovascular (CV) events in COVID-19. Methods: We retrospectively included patients hospitalized for COVID-19 from 10 centers. Clinical, biochemical, electrocardiographic, and imaging data at admission and medications were collected. Primary endpoint was a composite of in-hospital CV death, acute heart failure (AHF), acute myocarditis, arrhythmias, acute coronary syndromes (ACS), cardiocirculatory arrest, and pulmonary embolism (PE). Results: Of the 748 patients included, 141(19%) reached the set endpoint: 49 (7%) CV death, 15 (2%) acute myocarditis, 32 (4%) sustained-supraventricular or ventricular arrhythmias, 14 (2%) cardiocirculatory arrest, 8 (1%) ACS, 41 (5%) AHF, and 39 (5%) PE. Patients with CV events had higher age, body temperature, creatinine, high-sensitivity troponin, white blood cells, and platelet counts at admission and were more likely to have systemic hypertension, renal failure (creatinine ≥ 1.25 mg/dL), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, atrial fibrillation, and cardiomyopathy. On univariate and multivariate analysis, troponin and renal failure were associated with the composite endpoint. Kaplan–Meier analysis showed a clear divergence of in-hospital composite event-free survival stratified according to median troponin value and the presence of renal failure (Log rank p < 0.001). Conclusions: Our findings, derived from a multicenter data collection study, suggest the routine use of biomarkers, such as cardiac troponin and serum creatinine, for in-hospital prediction of CV events in patients with COVID-19.

Abstract

Olive tree (Olea europaea L) represents one of the most important evergreen tree species. In Sicily agroforestry systems based on the olive tree, named traditional olive orchard, are common and often are grown together to other tree crops, such as vineyards, or with cereals or forages. This last are usually grown in the interspace between rows and particularly in olive groves were planting density is rather low (less than 200 trees/ha). To increase crop efficiency and to reduce costs of harvesting, by using proper machines, in the last 20 years in the olive industry have been developed new planting systems: Intensive (up to 400 trees/ha), and the Superintensive (up to 2000 trees/ha). Within the project LIFE15 OLIVE4CLIMATE has been evaluated the balance, in terms of biomass and of carbon sequestration, for the above olive orchard systems. The biomass of orchard was evaluated both in the above- and in the below-ground tree components. The dry matter of the vegetation removed by pruning was evaluated as well. The enlargement of trunk cross sectional area, the dry matter accumulated in the cover crop and the root biomass were measured as well. By the data currently collected resulted that carbon sequestration efficiency in the Traditional olive orchards is greater than in the Superintensive ones and this, affects the carbon sequestration efficiency in the two orchard systems studied.

28. Cellulose and TiO2-ZrO2 Nanocomposite as a Catalyst for Glucose Conversion to 5-EMF.

Abstract

This work demonstrated the use of green material catalysts, produced from Sengon sawdust waste, to obtain nanocellulose biopolymers. The green material catalysts were utilized as catalysts support of TiO2-ZrO2 binary oxide in the form of nanocomposite materials with superior synergistic properties. The isolation of nanocellulose was achieved using a hydrolysis method with a yield of 63.40%. The TiO2 and ZrO2 nanoparticles have average particle sizes of around 25 and 15 nm, respectively, and the binary oxides of iO2-ZrO2 pretained an average particle size of 30 nm were used. Furthermore, the nanocellulose combined with the TiO2-ZrO2 binary oxide had formed a cellulose/ TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposite with an average particle size of 30 nm. This indicates that the supporting nanocellulose can stabilize the nanoparticles and avoid aggregation. Moreover, the nanocomposites can be used as a catalyst for the conversion of glucose to 5-ethoxymethylfurfural (5-EMF). The catalytic activity increased with the nanoparticle effect obtained ZrO2, TiO2, TiO2-ZrO2, and cellulose and TiO2-ZrO2 nanocomposite, in 15.50%, 20.20%, 35.20%, and 45.50% yields, respectively. The best yield of 5-EMF was 45.50%, with reaction conditions of 1:1 TiO2-ZrO2 ratio, 4 h reaction time, and 160 °C reaction temperature. The use of nanocellulose biopolymer generated from Sengon sawdust waste in Indonesia provides a promising catalyst support material as an alternative green catalyst. Abstract

Background As children comprise a considerable proportion of our population, the importance of local epidemiologic research and geographic and racial differences can’t be disputed on childhood malignancies. Methods In this descriptive retrospective study, we extensively reviewed the medical records of patients younger than 15 years of age, diagnosed with solid malignant tumors, from 1996 to 2010, using the last version of International Classification of Childhood Cancers. Results In our study the order of incidence of solid malignancies was relatively similar to the other national studies, with lymphomas and Central Nervous System (CNS) tumors as the most common, followed by Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) tumors, soft tissue sarcomas and renal tumors. The peak age of diagnosis was between 1 and 4 years old. In our study, the overall male to female ratio was 1.38, with a trend towards male dominance in the older age groups. We also observed a disturbing trend of childhood solid malignancies. The total number of cases almost doubled from 2009(54(6.9%)) to 2010(96(12.2%)) .This trend was particularly detected in CNS and SNS tumors. Further analysis showed that malignant CNS tumors had played a more pronounced role in this change. Conclusion Changes in trends of some tumor categories have illustrated a desperate need to further research in regional and national levels. Also the gathered data can be used to make more accurate programs for a better control of cancer and to help policymakers to allocate more evidence-based resource for hospitals.

Abstract

Aims Left atrial (LA) size is considered a marker of poor prognosis in heart failure (HF) patients. Prior studies have recruited relatively few subjects limiting their power to adequately analyse the interaction between LA size, left ventricular (LV) systolic and diastolic function, and prognosis. Method and results The MeRGE collaboration combines prospective data from 18 studies in HF patients. In this analysis of data from 1157 patients, the primary endpoint was death or hospitalization for worsening HF. In multivariate analysis (Cox proportion hazard model), LA area was associated with prognosis (HR 1.03 per cm2, 95% CI 1.02, 1.05; P < 0.0001) independently of age, NYHA class, LV ejection fraction, and restrictive filling pattern (RFP). When LA area was used as a categorical variable, the HR associated with larger LA area (above median) was 1.4 (95% CI 1.13, 1.74) and when LA area index was used, the HR was 2.36 (95% CI 1.80, 3.08). When the patients with and without RFP were divided on the basis of either LA area or LA area index, significantly higher event rates were observed in those with larger LA area. Conclusion Left atrial area is a powerful predictor of outcome among HF patients with predominantly impaired systolic function, and is independent of, and provides additional prognostic information beyond LV systolic and diastolic function.

Abstract

Heart failure is a widespread syndrome involving several organs, still characterized by high mortality and morbidity, and whose clinical course is heterogeneous and hardly predictable. In this scenario, the assessment of heart failure prognosis represents a fundamental step in clinical practice. A single parameter is always unable to provide a very precise prognosis. Therefore, risk scores based on multiple parameters have been introduced, but their clinical utility is still modest. Methods In this review, we evaluated several prognostic models for acute, right, chronic, and end-stage heart failure based on multiple parameters. In particular, for chronic heart failure we considered risk scores essentially based on clinical evaluation, comorbidities analysis, baroreflex sensitivity, heart rate variability, sleep disorders, laboratory tests, echocardiographic imaging, and cardiopulmonary exercise test parameters. Results What is at present established is that a single parameter is not sufficient for an accurate prediction of prognosis in heart failure because of the complex nature of the disease. However, none of the scoring systems available is widely used, being in some cases complex, not user-friendly, or based on expensive or not easily available parameters. Conclusion We believe that multiparametric scores for risk assessment in heart failure are promising but their widespread use needs to be experienced.

44. Detection of toxic compounds in water with an array of optical reporters

Abstract

An opto-electronic tongue, prepared using porphyrins, pH indicators, and their mixtures, has been tested for the analysis of toxic compounds in potable water. The color changes of sensitive dyes immersed in a water solution containing the target analytes were measured with an optical platform made by four LEDs (as light sources) and a digital camera (detector). We demonstrate that blends of dyes might be endowed with sensing properties wider than those of the single constituents, enabling the identification of a range of toxic compounds at concentrations smaller than 10(-6) mol/L. Furthermore, the use of the reporters in a sensor array configuration allows for the identification of the compounds disregarding their concentration. (C) Published by Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract

The conflict between hosts and guests in the touristic regions: a questionable solution of 1926. Tourists generally move in a place normally belonging to the autochthones, therefore the relationship between these two categories can give rise to a real conflict. Politics often put itself as an intermediary to regulate the coexistence between hosts and guests and prevent the degeneration of their intercourse. In 1926 a book has been published in Sanremo (Italy) with the aim to teach the schoolboys of a health resort the more correct behaviour to prevent conflicts with the tourists. This book is here examined with the critical approach typical of the most up-to-date tendencies of the geography of tourism and of the didactics of geography.
