Numerous domains, in fundamental research as well as in applications, require the study of reactions induced by neutrons with energies from few MeV up to few tens of MeV. Reliable measurements also are necessary to improve the evaluated databases used by nuclear transport codes. This energy range covers a large number of topics like transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. A new facility called Neutrons For Science (NFS) is being built for this purpose on the GANIL site at Caen (France). NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam for time-of-flight facility as well as irradiation stations for cross-section measurements. Neutrons will be produced by the interaction of deuteron and proton beams, delivered by the SPIRAL-2 linear accelerator, with thick or thin converters made of beryllium or lithium. Continuous and quasi-mono-energetic spectra will be available at NFS up to 40 MeV. In this fast energy region, the neutron flux is expected to be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than at other existing time-of-flight facilities. In addition, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will allow performing cross-section measurements by the activation technique. After a description of the facility and its characteristics, the experiments to be performed in the short and medium term will be presented.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
The structure of $^{34}$Si was studied through $\gamma$ spectroscopy separately in the $\beta^-$ decays of $^{34}$Mg and $^{34}$Al at the ISOLDE facility of CERN. Different configurations in $^{34}$Si were populated independently from the two recently identified $\beta$-decaying states in $^{34}$Al having spin-parity assignments $J^\pi = 4^-$ dominated by the normal configuration $\pi (d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (f_{7/2})$ and $J^\pi = 1^+$ by the intruder configuration $\pi (d_{5/2})^{-1} \otimes \nu (d_{3/2})^{-1}(f_{7/2})^{2}$. The paper reports on spectroscopic properties of $^{34}$Si such as an extended level scheme, spin and parity assignments based on log($ft$) values and $\gamma$-ray branching ratios, absolute $\beta$ feeding intensities and neutron emission probabilities. A total of 11 newly identified levels and 26 transitions were added to the previously known level scheme of $^{34}$Si. Large scale shell-model calculations using the {\sc sdpf-u-mix} interaction, able to treat higher order intruder configurations, are compared with the new results and conclusions are drawn concerning the predictive power of {\sc sdpf-u-mix}, the $N=20$ shell gap, the level of mixing between normal and intruder configurations for the 0$_1^+$, 0$_2^+$ and 2$_1^+$ states and the absence of triaxial deformation in $^{34}$Si.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
Better knowledge of the neutron population in reactors is crucial to improve the accuracy of neutronics simulations of present day or future reactor cores. This population is partially driven by (n, xn) reactions. However, the cross sections of these reactions are not precisely known. This is particularly true for the 238U(n, n’γ) cross section, which is on the High Priority Request List. One method to measure this cross section is to use the prompt γ-ray spectroscopy coupled to time-of-flight measurements. This allows the total (n, n’) cross section to be inferred from the measured (n, xnγ) cross sections and the level scheme information. However, the knowledge of the 238U level scheme is still very incomplete, so an initiative to experimentally revisit the 238U structure has been launched using γ-γ coincidences spectroscopy. The v-Ball γ-spectrometer was coupled to the LICORNE directional neutron source of the ALTO facility, allowing study of inelastic scattering on 238U via γ-γ coincidences. The analysis of data obtained during the first v-Ball campaign was performed using the Radware escl8r software. At the present time, 73 γ-transitions and 50 levels registered in ENSDF have been confirmed and 120 new γ-transitions and 50 new levels have been found.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
The necessary improvement of evaluated nuclear data for nuclear applications development is possible through new and high quality experimental measurements. In particular, improving (n, n’) cross section evaluations for fast neutrons is a goal of interest for new reactor fuel cycles, such as 232Th/233U or 238U/239Pu. Our group at CNRS-IPHC developed an experimental program to measure (n, n’γ) cross section using prompt γ-ray spectroscopy and neutron energy determination by time-of-flight with a focus on reaching the highest achievable level of accuracy. The collected partial cross sections can then be used to infer the total (n, n’) one and contribute to evaluation improvement. The extraction of the exclusive (n, n’γ) cross sections from the recorded data involves using many parameters and processing that may introduce uncertainties and correlations. In that case, the usual method for combining and computing uncertainties based on the perturbation theory can be long and complex. It also makes the calculation of covariance hard and the inclusion of some unusual forms of uncertainty even more difficult. To overcome this issue, we developed a process relying on random sampling methods that processes intermediate analysis data to compute cross sections, uncertainties and covariance. As a benchmark, we used this Monte Carlo method on 232Th, 233U and 238U data and reproduced the central values and uncertainties calculated using the analytical method, while also producing covariance matrices for (n, n’γ) cross sections. For particular cases, the random sampling method is able to produce uncertainties that better reflect the input data, compared to the analytical method.

Physics ,QC1-999 - Abstract
We report on a microscopic modeling of the first order of multistep direct emission based on one phonon excitations, given by the QRPA model, and an effective in-medium nucleon nucleon interaction, described within the JLM folding model. The results of our coupled channels framework for deformed target are illustrated in the case of low energy discrete state excitations in 152Sm. Pre-equilibrium predictions and their impact on inclusive and exclusive (n,xn) cross sections and fission cross sections are discussed for actinides. We discuss the importance of i) collective excitations to describe the neutron emission spectra and of ii) spin distribution of the residual nucleus formed after the neutron pre-equilibrium emission, that is a key ingredient to model the residual nucleus decay.

Nuclear Experiment - Abstract
A novel method of deducing the deformation of the N=Z nucleus 76Sr is presented. It is based on the comparison of the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution B(GT) from its beta decay with the results of QRPA calculations. This method confirms previous indications of the strong prolate deformation of this nucleus in a totally independent way. The measurement has been carried out with a large Total Absorption gamma Spectrometer, "Lucrecia", newly installed at CERN-ISOLDE., Comment: Accepted in Phys. Rev. Letters

The four LEP collaborations, ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, have searched for the neutral Higgs bosons which are predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric standard model (MSSM). The data of the four collaborations are statistically combined and examined for their consistency with the background hypothesis and with a possible Higgs boson signal. The combined LEP data show no significant excess of events which would indicate the production of Higgs bosons. The search results are used to set upper bounds on the cross-sections of various Higgs-like event topologies. The results are interpreted within the MSSM in a number of "benchmark" models, including CP-conserving and CP-violating scenarios. These interpretations lead in all cases to large exclusions in the MSSM parameter space. Absolute limits are set on the parameter tan β and, in some scenarios, on the masses of neutral Higgs bosons.

- Abstract
Introduction: The encouraging efficacy and safety data on intravenous thrombolysis with tenecteplase in ischemic stroke and its practical advantages motivated our centers to switch from alteplase to tenecteplase. We report its impact on treatment times and clinical outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed clinical and procedural data of patients treated with alteplase or tenecteplase in a comprehensive (CSC) and a primary stroke center (PSC), which transitioned respectively in 2019 and 2018. Tenecteplase enabled in-imaging thrombolysis in the CSC. The main outcomes were the imaging-to-thrombolysis and thrombolysis-to-puncture times. We assessed the association of tenecteplase with 3-month functional independence and parenchymal hemorrhage (PH) with multivariable logistic models. Results: We included 795 patients, 387 (48.7%) received alteplase and 408 (51.3%) tenecteplase. Both groups (tenecteplase vs alteplase) were similar in terms of age (75 vs 76 years), baseline NIHSS score (7 vs 7.5) and proportion of patients treated with mechanical thrombectomy (24.1% vs 27.5%). Tenecteplase patients had shorter imaging-to-thrombolysis times (27 vs 36 min, p< 0.0001) mainly driven by patients treated in the CSC (22 vs 38 min, p< 0.001). In the PSC, tenecteplase patients had shorter thrombolysis-to-puncture times (84 vs 95 min, p= 0.02), reflecting faster interhospital transfer for MT. 3-month functional independence rate was higher in the tenecteplase group (62.8% vs 53.4%, p< 0.01). In the multivariable analysis, tenecteplase was significantly associated with functional independence (ORa1.68, 95% CI 1.15–2.48, p< 0.01), but not with PH (ORa0.68, 95% CI 0.41–1.12, p= 0.13).Conclusion: Switch from alteplase to tenecteplase reduced process times and may improve functional outcome, with similar safety profile.

- Abstract
11 pags., 10 figs., 5 tabs.-- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, The structure of Si34 was studied through γ spectroscopy separately in the β- decays of Mg34 and Al34 at the ISOLDE facility of CERN. Different configurations in Si34 were populated independently from the two recently identified β-decaying states in Al34 having spin-parity assignments Jπ=4- dominated by the normal configuration π(d5/2)-1 - ν(f7/2) and Jπ=1+ by the intruder configuration π(d5/2)-1 - ν(d3/2)-1(f7/2)2. The paper reports on spectroscopic properties of Si34 such as an extended level scheme, spin and parity assignments based on log(ft) values and γ-ray branching ratios, absolute β feeding intensities, and neutron emission probabilities. A total of 11 newly identified levels and 26 transitions were added to the previously known level scheme of Si34. Large scale shell-model calculations using the SDPF-U-MIX interaction, able to treat higher order intruder configurations, are compared with the new results and conclusions are drawn concerning the predictive power of SDPF-U-MIX, the N=20 shell gap, the level of mixing between normal and intruder configurations for the 01+, 02+, and 21+ states, and the absence of triaxial deformation in Si34., This work was partially supported by a grant of the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research and Innovation, CNCS-UEFISCDI project number PN-II-RU-TE- 2014-4-1455, by the Romanian IFA Grant CERN/ISOLDE, by Research Foundation Flanders (FWO-Belgium), by GOA/2015/010 (BOF KU Leuven), and by the Interuniversity Attraction Poles Programme initiated by the Belgian Science Policy Office (BriX network P7/12). - Abstract
The neutrons for science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2, the new superconducting linear accelerator built at GANIL in Caen (France). The proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will allow producing intense neutron fields in the 100 keV-40 MeV energy range. Continuous and quasi-mono-kinetic energy spectra, respectively, will be available at NFS, produced by the interaction of a deuteron beam on a thick Be converter and by the Li-7(p, n) reaction on thin converter. The pulsed neutron beam, with a flux up to two orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities, will open new opportunities of experiments in fundamental research as well as in nuclear data measurements. In addition to the neutron beam, irradiation stations for neutron-, proton- and deuteron-induced reactions will be available for cross-sections measurements and for the irradiation of electronic devices or biological cells. NFS, whose first experiment is foreseen in 2018, will be a very powerful tool for physics, fundamental research as well as applications like the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors.

- Abstract

- Abstract
The Neutrons For Science (NFS) facility is a component of SPIRAL-2 laboratory under construction at Caen (France). SPIRAL-2 is dedicated to the production of high intensity Radioactive Ions Beams (RIB). It is based on a high-power linear accelerator (LINAG) to accelerate deuterons beams in order to produce neutrons by breakup reactions on a C converter. These neutrons will induce fission in U-238 for production of radioactive isotopes. Additionally to the RIB production, the proton and deuteron beams delivered by the accelerator will be used in the NFS facility. NFS is composed of a pulsed neutron beam and irradiation stations for cross-section measurements and material studies. The beams delivered by the LINAG will allow producing intense neutron beams in the 100 keV-40 MeV energy range with either a continuous or quasi-mono-energetic spectrum. At NFS available average fluxes will be up to 2 orders of magnitude higher than those of other existing time-of-flight facilities in the 1 MeV - 40 MeV range. NFS will be a very powerful tool for fundamental physics and application related research in support of the transmutation of nuclear waste, design of future fission and fusion reactors, nuclear medicine or test and development of new detectors. The facility and its characteristics are described, and several examples of the first potential experiments are presented.

paper 9414; International audience; The GUINEVERE project is part of the EUROTRANS Integrated Project of the 6th EURATOM Framework Programme. It is mainly devoted to ADS on-line reactivity monitoring validation, sub-criticality determination and operational procedures (loading, start-up, shut-down, ...) as a follow-up of the MUSE experiments. The project consists in coupling a fast lead core, set-up in the VENUS reactor at SCK*CEN Mol (B), with a GENEPI neutron source under construction by CNRS. To accommodate the accelerator in a vertical coupling configuration, the VENUS building is being heightened. The fast core will be loaded with enriched Uranium and will be moderated and reflected with solid lead (zero power experiment). For the purpose of the experimental programme, the neutron source has to be operated not only in pulsed mode but also in continuous mode to investigate the current-to-flux reactivity indicator in representative conditions of a powerful ADS. In this latter mode it is also required to make short beam interruptions to have access to the neutron population decrease as a function of time: from this spectrum it will be possible to apply different analysis techniques such as "prompt decay" fitting techniques and "source jerk" techniques. Beam interruptions will be repeated at a programmable frequency to improve time spectra statistics. Different sub-criticality levels (keff=0.99, 0.97, 0.95, ...) will be investigated in order to obtain a full set of data points for the final overall validation of the methodology. This paper describes the status of the experimental facility assembling, and the foreseen experimental programme to be started.

International audience; The future SPIRAL-2 facility is mainly composed of a high-power superconducting driver LINAC, delivering a high-intensity deuteron, proton and heavy ions beams. The first two beams are particularly well suited to the construction of a neutron beam and irradiation facility called Neutrons for Science (NFS). Thick C and Be target-converters with incident deuteron beam will produce an intense white neutron spectrum, while thin 7Li target and incident proton beam allows generating quasi-monoenergetic neutrons. The 1–40MeV neutron energy range will be covered and characterized by very intense fluxes available. The primary ion beam characteristics (energy, time resolution, intensity, etc.) are adequate to create a neutron time-of-flight facility. Irradiation stations for neutron, proton and deuteron induced reactions could also be built in order to perform cross-sections measurements by activation techniques. In this paper we will discuss the potential of this new installation to investigate numerous topics, both in fundamental and applied physics. In particular, cross section measurements could be performed for different purposes like nuclear data evaluation, fission and fusion technology, Accelerator Driven Systems, nuclear medicine, astrophysics, etc.

International audience; The beta of 31Mg has been investigated at GANIL. The ions were implanted in a silicon detector array surrounded by germanium gamma detectors. beta particles and subsequent gamma rays have been observed. The 31Mg half-life has been measured (T_1/2=237pm25 ms) in good agreement with previously reported values. The decay scheme of 31Mg has been enriched with two new low-spin levels and seven new $\gamma$ transitions in 31Al. Most importantly, very weak feeding to the 31Al ground and lowest excited states has been established. These results are compared to new shell-model calculations in the sd-fp valence space, using an interaction that was modified in order to reproduce the recently established low-energy level scheme of 31Mg. A good agreement for all observables is found, supporting the idea that 31Al is outside and 31Mg is inside the so-called "island of inversion."

8 pages, 5 figures.-- PACS nrs.: 21.10.Pc, 23.40.Hc, 27.50.+e., A total absorption spectrometer, dedicated to the study of very short-lived atomic species, has been built and installed at the CERN/ISOLDE mass separator. The beta decay of the neutron-deficient Kr-74 nucleus has been studied using this new device. The Gamow-Teller strength distribution has been observed over most of the Q(EC) window, and a total strength of 0.69(3) g(A)(2)/4pi has been measured for states with excitation energy below 3 MeV. Shape mixing in the Kr-74 ground state is inferred from a comparison of the experimental strength distribution with self-consistent, deformed, quasiparticle-random-phase-approximation calculations., This work has been partly supported by EPSRC(UK), by the IN2P3 /CNRS (France) and CICYT (Spain) under Contract Nos. Nuclear Physics - Experiment - Abstract
The magnitude of the Coulomb mixing parameter $\delta^1\!\scriptstyle_\textrm{IM}$ has been experimentally deduced, for the first time, for the $\beta$-decay of $^{74}$Rb. The estimated magnitude is derived from the feeding of the non-analog first excited $0^+$ state in $^{74}$Kr. The inferred upper limit of 0.07% is small compared to theoretical predictions. The half-life was measured to be 64.90(9) ms.

ydinfysiikka - Abstract
The 33 Na β decay was studied online using mass separation techniques and a first description of the level structure of the neutron-rich isotope 33 Mg , with N = 21 , has been obtained. The experiment involved the measurement of β-γ, β-γ-γ, and β − n − γ coincidences as well as neutron spectra by time-of-flight technique. The first low energy level scheme for the daughter nucleus 33 Mg is given with five bound states. Spin and parity assignments are proposed according to β feedings and γ-ray multipolarities. β-strength distribution is evaluated, taking into account 1 n - and 2 n -emission channels and it is compared with the calculated GT strength distribution. In particular, the 1 p − 1 h and 2 p − 2 h excitations are shown to result in substantial contribution to the low energy configurations. Allowed β branch to the 33 Mg g.s. [ log f t = 5.27 ( 26 ) ] gives direct evidence for the inversion of ν ( f 7 / 2 ) and ν ( d 3 / 2 ) states. peerReviewed

The $^{34,35}Al\beta$ decays were studied at the CERN on-line mass separator ISOLDE by $\beta-\gamma, \beta-\gamma-\gamma$ and $\beta-n-\gamma$ measurements, in order to corroborate thelow-level description of $^{34}Si$ and to obtain the first information on the level structure of the N=21 isotope $^{35}Si$. Earlier observed $\gamma$ lines in $^{34} Al$ decay were confirmed and new gamma transitions following both beta decay and $\beta$-delayed neutron emission were established. The first level scheme in $^{35}Si$, including three excited states at 910, 974 and 2168 keV, is consistent with $J^{\pi} =3/2^{-}$ and $3/2^{+}$ for the first two states respectively. Beta-decay half-life of $T_{1/2} = 38.6 (4)$ ms and beta-delayed neutron branching $P_{n}$ value $(P_{n} =41(13) %)$ were measured unambiguously. The significance of the single-particle energy determination at N=21, Z=14, for assessing the effective interaction in sd-fp shell-model calculations, is discussed and illustrated by predictions for different n-rich isotopes.

The 34,35Al b decays have been studied at the CERN online mass separator ISOLDE by b-g, b-g-g, and b-n-g measurements in order to corroborate the low-level description of 34Si and to obtain the first information on the level structure of the N521 isotope 35Si. Earlier observed g lines in 34Al decay were confirmed and new g transitions following both b decay and b-delayed neutron emission have been established. The first level scheme of 35Si includes three excited states at 910, 974, and 2168 keV. Indication is found for Jp 5(3/2)2 and (3/2)1 for the first two excited states, respectively. Beta-decay half-life of T1/2538.6(4) ms and b-delayed neutron branching value Pn541(13)% were measured unambiguously. The significance of the single-particle energy determination at N521, Z514 for assessing the effective interaction in sd-f p shellmodel calculations is discussed and illustrated by predictions for different neutron-rich isotopes. peerReviewed

Experiences show that most readers are lost in electronic text, because they lack of global information. As a consequence, many people print electronic texts before reading them. This strange phenomenon was not predicted in the past and it could preclude the expansion of electronic reading. We propose here a way to provide some visualization of the structure of the document. That corresponds to the cartography of its overall organization. Our hope is that it could help to orient in electronic texts and consequently to facilitate electronic reading. This paper describes the origins of difficulties and then it presents all the technical details of the proposed solution.
