Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) completed its 5 month Survey Validation in 2021 May. Spectra of stellar and extragalactic targets from Survey Validation constitute the first major data sample from the DESI survey. This paper describes the public release of those spectra, the catalogs of derived properties, and the intermediate data products. In total, the public release includes good-quality spectral information from 466,447 objects targeted as part of the Milky Way Survey, 428,758 as part of the Bright Galaxy Survey, 227,318 as part of the Luminous Red Galaxy sample, 437,664 as part of the Emission Line Galaxy sample, and 76,079 as part of the Quasar sample. In addition, the release includes spectral information from 137,148 objects that expand the scope beyond the primary samples as part of a series of secondary programs. Here, we describe the spectral data, data quality, data products, Large-Scale Structure science catalogs, access to the data, and references that provide relevant background to using these spectra.

Abstract

We present the measurement of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) from the Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest of high-redshift quasars with the first-year dataset of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Our analysis uses over $420\,000$ Ly$\alpha$ forest spectra and their correlation with the spatial distribution of more than $700\,000$ quasars. An essential facet of this work is the development of a new analysis methodology on a blinded dataset. We conducted rigorous tests using synthetic data to ensure the reliability of our methodology and findings before unblinding. Additionally, we conducted multiple data splits to assess the consistency of the results and scrutinized various analysis approaches to confirm their robustness. For a given value of the sound horizon ($r_d$), we measure the expansion at $z_{\rm eff}=2.33$ with 2\% precision, $H(z_{\rm eff}) = (239.2 \pm 4.8) (147.09~{\rm Mpc} /r_d)$ km/s/Mpc. Similarly, we present a 2.4\% measurement of the transverse comoving distance to the same redshift, $D_M(z_{\rm eff}) = (5.84 \pm 0.14) (r_d/147.09~{\rm Mpc})$ Gpc. Abstract

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations can be measured with sub-percent precision above redshift two with the Lyman-alpha forest auto-correlation and its cross-correlation with quasar positions. This is one of the key goals of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) which started its main survey in May 2021. We present in this paper a study of the contaminants to the lyman-alpha forest which are mainly caused by correlated signals introduced by the spectroscopic data processing pipeline as well as astrophysical contaminants due to foreground absorption in the intergalactic medium. Notably, an excess signal caused by the sky background subtraction noise is present in the lyman-alpha auto-correlation in the first line-of-sight separation bin. We use synthetic data to isolate this contribution, we also characterize the effect of spectro-photometric calibration noise, and propose a simple model to account for both effects in the analysis of the lyman-alpha forest. We then measure the auto-correlation of the quasar flux transmission fraction of low redshift quasars, where there is no lyman-alpha forest absorption but only its contaminants. We demonstrate that we can interpret the data with a two-component model: data processing noise and triply ionized Silicon and Carbon auto-correlations. Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) will measure millions of quasar spectra by the end of its 5 year survey. Quasar redshift errors impact the shape of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest correlation functions, which can affect cosmological analyses and therefore cosmological interpretations. Using data from the DESI Early Data Release and the first two months of the main survey, we measure the systematic redshift error from an offset in the cross-correlation of the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest with quasars. We find evidence for a redshift dependent bias causing redshifts to be underestimated with increasing redshift, stemming from improper modeling of the Lyman-$\alpha$ optical depth in the templates used for redshift estimation. New templates were derived for the DESI Year 1 quasar sample at $z > 1.6$ and we found the redshift dependent bias, $\Delta r_\parallel$, increased from $-1.94 \pm 0.15$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc to $-0.08 \pm 0.04$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc ($-205 \pm 15~\text{km s}^{-1}$ to $-9.0 \pm 4.0~\text{km s}^{-1}$). Abstract

Synthetic data sets are used in cosmology to test analysis procedures, to verify that systematic errors are well understood and to demonstrate that measurements are unbiased. In this work we describe the methods used to generate synthetic datasets of Lyman-$\alpha$ quasar spectra aimed for studies with the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). In particular, we focus on demonstrating that our simulations reproduces important features of real samples, making them suitable to test the analysis methods to be used in DESI and to place limits on systematic effects on measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). We present a set of mocks that reproduce the statistical properties of the DESI early data set with good agreement. Abstract

The 1D power spectrum P1D of the Ly α forest provides important information about cosmological and astrophysical parameters, including constraints on warm dark matter models, the sum of the masses of the three neutrino species, and the thermal state of the intergalactic medium. We present the first measurement of P1D with the quadratic maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey early data sample. This early sample of 54 600 quasars is already comparable in size to the largest previous studies, and we conduct a thorough investigation of numerous instrumental and analysis systematic errors to evaluate their impact on DESI data with QMLE. We demonstrate the excellent performance of the spectroscopic pipeline noise estimation and the impressive accuracy of the spectrograph resolution matrix with 2D image simulations of raw DESI images that we processed with the DESI spectroscopic pipeline. We also study metal line contamination and noise calibration systematics with quasar spectra on the red side of the Ly α emission line. In a companion paper, we present a similar analysis based on the Fast Fourier Transform estimate of the power spectrum. We conclude with a comparison of these two approaches and discuss the key sources of systematic error that we need to address with the upcoming DESI Year 1 analysis.

Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) was designed to conduct a survey covering 14,000 deg2 over 5 yr to constrain the cosmic expansion history through precise measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO). The scientific program for DESI was evaluated during a 5 month survey validation (SV) campaign before beginning full operations. This program produced deep spectra of tens of thousands of objects from each of the stellar Milky Way Survey (MWS), Bright Galaxy Survey (BGS), luminous red galaxy (LRG), emission line galaxy (ELG), and quasar target classes. These SV spectra were used to optimize redshift distributions, characterize exposure times, determine calibration procedures, and assess observational overheads for the 5 yr program. In this paper, we present the final target selection algorithms, redshift distributions, and projected cosmology constraints resulting from those studies. We also present a One-Percent Survey conducted at the conclusion of SV covering 140 deg2 using the final target selection algorithms with exposures of a depth typical of the main survey. The SV indicates that DESI will be able to complete the full 14,000 deg2 program with spectroscopically confirmed targets from the MWS, BGS, LRG, ELG, and quasar programs with total sample sizes of 7.2, 13.8, 7.46, 15.7, and 2.87 million, respectively. These samples will allow exploration of the Milky Way halo, clustering on all scales, and BAO measurements with a statistical precision of 0.28% over the redshift interval z < 1.1, 0.39% over the redshift interval 1.1 < z < 1.9, and 0.46% over the redshift interval 1.9 < z < 3.5.

Abstract

We present the first measurements of Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$) forest correlations using early data from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We measure the auto-correlation of Ly$\alpha$ absorption using 88,509 quasars at $z>2$, and its cross-correlation with quasars using a further 147,899 tracer quasars at $z\gtrsim1.77$. Then, we fit these correlations using a 13-parameter model based on linear perturbation theory and find that it provides a good description of the data across a broad range of scales. We detect the BAO peak with a signal-to-noise ratio of $3.8\sigma$, and show that our measurements of the auto- and cross-correlations are fully-consistent with previous measurements by the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). Even though we only use here a small fraction of the final DESI dataset, our uncertainties are only a factor of 1.7 larger than those from the final eBOSS measurement. We validate the existing analysis methods of Ly$\alpha$ correlations in preparation for making a robust measurement of the BAO scale with the first year of DESI data.

Abstract

The one-dimensional power spectrum $P_{\mathrm{1D}}$ of the Ly$\alpha$ forest provides important information about cosmological and astrophysical parameters, including constraints on warm dark matter models, the sum of the masses of the three neutrino species, and the thermal state of the intergalactic medium. We present the first measurement of $P_{\mathrm{1D}}$ with the quadratic maximum likelihood estimator (QMLE) from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey early data sample. This early sample of $54~600$ quasars is already comparable in size to the largest previous studies, and we conduct a thorough investigation of numerous instrumental and analysis systematic errors to evaluate their impact on DESI data with QMLE. We demonstrate the excellent performance of the spectroscopic pipeline noise estimation and the impressive accuracy of the spectrograph resolution matrix with two-dimensional image simulations of raw DESI images that we processed with the DESI spectroscopic pipeline. We also study metal line contamination and noise calibration systematics with quasar spectra on the red side of the Ly$\alpha$ emission line. In a companion paper, we present a similar analysis based on the Fast Fourier Transform estimate of the power spectrum. Abstract

We present and validate the catalog of Lyman-$\alpha$ forest fluctuations for 3D analyses using the Early Data Release (EDR) from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. We used 88,511 quasars collected from DESI Survey Validation (SV) data and the first two months of the main survey (M2). We present several improvements to the method used to extract the Lyman-$\alpha$ absorption fluctuations performed in previous analyses from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In particular, we modify the weighting scheme and show that it can improve the precision of the correlation function measurement by more than 20%. This catalog can be downloaded from https://data.desi.lbl.gov/public/edr/vac/edr/lya/fuji/v0.3 and it will be used in the near future for the first DESI measurements of the 3D correlations in the Lyman-$\alpha$ forest.

Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) completed its five-month Survey Validation in May 2021. Spectra of stellar and extragalactic targets from Survey Validation constitute the first major data sample from the DESI survey. This paper describes the public release of those spectra, the catalogs of derived properties, and the intermediate data products. In total, the public release includes good-quality spectral information from 466,447 objects targeted as part of the Milky Way Survey, 428,758 as part of the Bright Galaxy Survey, 227,318 as part of the Luminous Red Galaxy sample, 437,664 as part of the Emission Line Galaxy sample, and 76,079 as part of the Quasar sample. In addition, the release includes spectral information from 137,148 objects that expand the scope beyond the primary samples as part of a series of secondary programs. Abstract

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) was designed to conduct a survey covering 14,000 deg$^2$ over five years to constrain the cosmic expansion history through precise measurements of Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO). The scientific program for DESI was evaluated during a five month Survey Validation (SV) campaign before beginning full operations. This program produced deep spectra of tens of thousands of objects from each of the stellar (MWS), bright galaxy (BGS), luminous red galaxy (LRG), emission line galaxy (ELG), and quasar target classes. These SV spectra were used to optimize redshift distributions, characterize exposure times, determine calibration procedures, and assess observational overheads for the five-year program. In this paper, we present the final target selection algorithms, redshift distributions, and projected cosmology constraints resulting from those studies. We also present a `One-Percent survey' conducted at the conclusion of Survey Validation covering 140 deg$^2$ using the final target selection algorithms with exposures of a depth typical of the main survey. The Survey Validation indicates that DESI will be able to complete the full 14,000 deg$^2$ program with spectroscopically-confirmed targets from the MWS, BGS, LRG, ELG, and quasar programs with total sample sizes of 7.2, 13.8, 7.46, 15.7, and 2.87 million, respectively. These samples will allow exploration of the Milky Way halo, clustering on all scales, and BAO measurements with a statistical precision of 0.28% over the redshift interval $z<1.1$, 0.39% over the redshift interval $1.1

Abstract

This report represents the first of three that will be released over the course of the study. It answers two primary questions: (1) How has Boston Coaching for Completion (BosC4C) been implemented? and (2) What was the cost to implement the program? Over the 2015-16 academic year, the study collected data, including by conducting intensive interviews with staff from the nonprofit organizations and from 10 partner colleges; administering an online survey to participating students; conducting focus groups with non-participating students; and analyzing information from the program's records of coaches' interactions with students. This report is designed to help develop a common standard of practice by describing the nonprofit coaching organizations' and colleges' activities, students' experiences, commonalities and differences across the organizations, and costs of implementing the BosC4C program. It also outlines the elements of transition coaching that appear to be consistent across the nine nonprofit organizations--as well as idiosyncratic to individual organizations--and describes challenges faced by organizations and their staff and by students. Based on what we learned, several themes have emerged.

Abstract

The stable propagation of jets in FRII sources is remarkable if one takes into account that large-scale jets are subjected to potentially highly disruptive three-dimensional (3D) Kelvin-Helmholtz instabilities. Numerical simulations can address this problem and help clarify the causes of this remarkable stability. Following previous studies of the stability of relativistic flows in two dimensions (2D), it is our aim to test and extend the conclusions of such works to three dimensions. We present numerical simulations for the study of the stability properties of 3D, sheared, relativistic flows. This work uses a fully parallelized code Ratpenat that solves equations of relativistic hydrodynamics in 3D. The results of the present simulations confirm those in 2D. We conclude that the growth of resonant modes in sheared relativistic flows could be important in explaining the long-term collimation of extragalactic jets., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

Abstract

We present and validate the catalogue of Lyman-α forest fluctuations for 3D analyses using the Early Data Release (EDR) from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey. We used 88 511 quasars collected from DESI Survey Validation (SV) data and the first two months of the main survey (M2). We present several improvements to the method used to extract the Lyman-α absorption fluctuations performed in previous analyses from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). In particular, we modify the weighting scheme and show that it can improve the precision of the correlation function measurement by more than 20 per cent. This catalogue can be downloaded from https://data.desi.lbl.gov/public/edr/vac/edr/lya/fuji/v0.3 , and it will be used in the near future for the first DESI measurements of the 3D correlations in the Lyman-α forest. Abstract

Satellite imagery is an indispensable tool in operational oil spills mapping. The smooth surface of oil sleeks make them visible in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery due to the low backscatter values making the oil spills distinctly dark in SAR images compared to the surrounding water. Oil extent delineation using SAR is very common but aside from using SAR images, optical satellite images are also of great help by capitalizing on the spectral characteristics of the oil surface to isolate the oil extents. The delineated extents are post-processed in a Geographic Information System (GIS) software where the oil spill area is calculated and published as oil extent maps. Though the area can be calculated, estimating the volume of oil present in the extent map remains to be a challenge. To answer this problem, this paper proposes a Physics-based solution to calculate the thickness of the oil by analysing local maxima in the reflectance spectrum of oil-covered water. Using this technique, oil thickness was estimated from Sentinel-2 multispectral images of an oil spill. It yielded an average oil thickness estimate of 0.560 ± 0.164 microns. Abstract

Tens of Surtseyan tuff cones are exposed in the Rio Coichel valley, between Nireguao and Estancia Bano Nuevo (Southern Chilean Andes). The Early Cretaceous products of the submarine eruptions rest on, or are interbedded with, shallow marine sandstones of the Hauterivian-early Aptian Apeleg Formation. The Early Cretaceous rocks typically contain large amphibole phenocrysts, clinopyroxene and plagioclase, and have compositions that range from relatively primitive basalts to andesites. The basalts are slightly enriched in LREE and incompatible trace elements. They have low Ti-contents and negative anomalies in Nb and Ta, characteristic of subduction-related magmas. Centimetre-sized amphibole megacrysts and an amphibole-bearing clinopyroxenite xenolith have been found in one of the tuff cones located near Estancia Bano Nuevo. The amphibole megacrysts are pargasite (low Si and Ti, high Mg). The xenolith has diopsidic clinopyroxene with abundant inclusions, and pargasite veins enclosing smaller clinopyroxene neoblasts. Geochemical data show that the megacrysts and the xenolith have the same origin and correspond to underplated igneous bodies crystallized at high pressure.

8 Páginas La acelerada disminución de la materia orgánica del suelo viene afectando sus propiedades, siendo necesario reincidir en el uso y manejo de abonos orgánicos. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue evaluar el efecto de la aplicación de dos abonos orgánicos combinados, Guano de las Islas (GI) y estiércol de ovino (EO), sobre las siguientes tres propiedades físicas del suelo: densidad aparente, estabilidad de agregados y resistencia mecánica a la penetración, bajo el cultivo de quinua (Chenopodium quinoa Willd) variedad Hualhuas. Estas propiedades se determinaron mediante los métodos de cilindro biselado, Yoder y del penetrómetro dinámico y bajo un diseño en bloques completamente al azar, con arreglo factorial de dos factores (GI y EO) y tres niveles por factor (0; 0,5 y 1 t/hapara GI y 0; 2,5 y 5 t/hapara EO). Los resultados demostraron que la aplicación combinada de las diferentes dosis en estudio no influye sobre la densidad aparente del suelo, pero la aplicación combinada de 0,5 t/ha de GI con 5 t/ha de EO y 1 t/ha de GI con 5 t/hade EO disminuyen significativamente la resistencia mecánica del suelo a la penetración e incrementan la estabilidad de agregados. 1. Abstract

This work was carried out in the “César Escalante Dellundé” Meat Company, in the province of Camagüey, Cuba, with the objective of evaluating its steam generation and distribution system. An energy efficiency of the fire-tube boiler of 87.41% was obtained, the heat losses to the environment of the non-insulated pipes amounted to 85,764.31 W, while the total hardness of the feed water to the boiler is 10.26 times above the standard value. Two alternatives for improvements were proposed, consisting of: 1) insulation of the pipes through which water vapor circulates with Mineral Wool, and 2) preheating the boiler feed water up to 70 °C. The application of both proposals of improvements will result in fuel savings of 23.56 kg/h, which allows stop releasing about 576 m3/h of combustion gases to the environment, along with an increase of the energy efficiency of the boiler of 0.10 %. The total investment cost necessary to implement the two proposed improvement alternativesreached a value of $ 8 117,35 Cuban pesos (CUP), which is recovered in 2.36 months considering the economic savings per year obtained, which amount to CUP $ 41 193.33 due to fuel not consumed in the boiler., Este trabajo se realizó en el Combinado Cárnico “César Escalante Dellundé”, de la provincia de Camagüey, Cuba con el objetivode evaluar su sistema de generación y distribución de vapor. Se obtuvo una eficiencia energética de la caldera pirotubular de 87,41 %, las pérdidas de calor al ambiente de las tuberías no aisladas ascendieron a 85 764,31 W, mientras que la dureza total del agua de alimentación a la caldera se encuentra 10,26 veces por encima de lo establecido por norma. Se propusieron dos alternativas de mejoras, consistentes en: 1) aislamiento de las tuberías por donde circula vapor de agua con el aislante Lana Mineral, y2) precalentamiento del agua de alimentación a la caldera hasta 70 ºC. La aplicación de ambas propuestas de mejoras traerá consigo un ahorro de combustible de 23,56 kg/h, lo cual permite que se dejen de emitir 576 m3/h de gases de combustión al ambiente, además de un posibilitar un incremento de la eficiencia energética de la caldera en un 0,10 %. El costo total de inversión necesario para implementar las dos alternativas de mejoras propuestasalcanzó un valor de $ 8 117,35pesos cubanos (PC), el cual se recupera en 2,36 meses considerando los ahorros económicos por año que seobtienen, los cuales ascienden a PC $ 41 193,33 a causa de combustible que no se consume en la caldera.

RESUMEN El presente trabajo se desarrolló en la empresa cárnica “Raúl Cepero Bonilla”, en Camagüey, Cuba con el objetivo evaluar el sistema de refrigeración. Se obtuvieron valores de coeficiente de rendimiento y de eficiencia termodinámica para el compresor de 3,849 y 59,86%, respectivamente, los cuales pueden considerarse aceptables. El consumo diario de energía frigorífica fue de 4 332 kW, el cual se reduce en un 61,18 %, con ambas propuestas de mejora, lo que implica un ahorro económico anual de $ 27 114,32. El costo de inversión de la instalación del aislante Armaflex en las tuberías de refrigeración ascendió a $ 103 234,24, mientras que el costo de inversión de la instalación del aislante Poliuretano en las cámaras frigoríficas tuvo un valor de $ 506 536,38. La inversión del aislante en las redes de tuberías de refrigeración se recupera en 4,76 años. Se emplearon hojas de cálculo Excel para la realización de los cálculos. Abstract

Cell state determination is the outcome of intrinsically stochastic biochemical reactions. Transitions between such states are studied as noise-driven escape problems in the chemical species space. Escape can occur via multiple possible multidimensional paths, with probabilities depending nonlocally on the noise. Here we characterize the escape from an oscillatory biochemical state by minimizing the Freidlin-Wentzell action, deriving from it the stochastic spiral exit path from the limit cycle. We also use the minimized action to infer the escape time probability density function.

Também, pelos mesmos estudos acústicos, busca-se demonstrar e determinar a presença do status da consoante africada retroflexa em distintos ambientes fonéticos (#_, S_, _S, _#). Da pesquisa, participaram oito informantes bilíngues (quéchua-castelhano) com domínio de sua língua materna quéchua. O corpus foi obtido por meio de gravações: primeiro, fez-se a gravação de palavras com pares mínimos a partir de imagem cujas representações gráficas possuem a consoante africada retroflexa e não retroflexa com cada informante - cada par mínimo (oito palavras) é mencionado três vezes. Segundo, mostraram-se novamente imagens ao entrevistado, porém contendo palavras portadoras apenas do som retroflexo desvozeado [tʂ] em diferentes ambientes fonéticos a serem analisados, e foi pedido que reconhecessem e falassem a frase-veículo por cinco vezes, repetindo o nome da imagem mostrada. Ademais, os dados foram submetidos à análise estatística através do programa R-Studio, por meio do qual foram feitas as análises de variância a fim de verificar o valor do p (valor da probabilidade). Como resultados, observaram-se que a consoante africada retroflexa apresenta uma menor medida nos F1, F2 e F3 (em início, meio e fim), na duração e no tempo de subida do que da consoante não retroflexa, da mesma forma, a vogal próxima da consoante retroflexa apresenta uma menor medida do que a vogal ao lado da consoante não retroflexa. Além disso, em distintos ambientes fonéticos, a consoante africada retroflexa, por influência da vogal próxima, apresenta uma medida distinta nos formantes, na duração e no tempo de subida. Por exemplo, essa consoante apresenta uma maior medida da duração e do tempo de subida em final de sílaba e de palavra. Pelos resultados descritos, Moya é considerada uma zona de transição dialetal entre o quéchua wanka e o quéchua chanka porque apresenta evidencias linguísticas que explicam a presença dessa consoante no sistema fonético-fonológico da variedade do quéchua desse distrito (quéchua chanka) e mostra que não se trata de um empréstimo do quéchua wanka, mas de uma consoante que se preservou do proto-quéchua (língua mãe) na fala dos moradores de Moya, diferentemente das comunidades próximas, nas quais essa africada retroflexa foi suprimida. Os resultados encontrados nesse distrito poderão contribuir para pesquisas futuras, tendo em vista que ainda não foram feitas investigações de análise acústica. Portanto, a pesquisa contribuirá para o conhecimento da língua e cultura da comunidade quéchua de Moya-Peru. Abstract

Updating of seasonal agricultural crop map is limited by the local knowledge of the mapper. Mapping of previously unaccounted agricultural plots involve massive field works aided by very high-resolution images. The phenological cycle of seasonal crops like sugarcane, with a range of ten (10) to twelve (12) months from planting to harvesting, exhibit a unique characteristic in terms of radar backscatter and time. In this paper, a pattern matching algorithm was tested to detect sugarcane plantations. Dynamic Time Warping (DTW), which was originally used for voice recognition, was used to detect sugarcane plantations from multitemporal Sentinel-1A images. Using known sugarcane plots, temporal signatures were gathered and used to detect other plantations in the area. The result helped the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) in updating the inventory of sugarcane plantations faster with detection accuracy of more than 92 percent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The development of hybrid methodologies is of current interest in both multi-scale modelling and stochastic reaction–diffusion systems regarding their applications to biology. We formulate a hybrid method for stochastic multi-scale models of cells populations that extends the remit of existing hybrid methods for reaction–diffusion systems. Such method is developed for a stochastic multi-scale model of tumour growth, i.e. population-dynamical models which account for the effects of intrinsic noise affecting both the number of cells and the intracellular dynamics. In order to formulate this method, we develop a coarse-grained approximation for both the full stochastic model and its mean-field limit. Such approximation involves averaging out the age-structure (which accounts for the multi-scale nature of the model) by assuming that the age distribution of the population settles onto equilibrium very fast. We then couple the coarse-grained mean-field model to the full stochastic multi-scale model. By doing so, within the mean-field region, we are neglecting noise in both cell numbers (population) and their birth rates (structure). This implies that, in addition to the issues that arise in stochastic-reaction diffusion systems, we need to account for the age-structure of the population when attempting to couple both descriptions. We exploit our coarse-graining model so that, within the mean-field region, the age-distribution is in equilibrium and we know its explicit form. This allows us to couple both domains consistently, as upon transference of cells from the mean-field to the stochastic region, we sample the equilibrium age distribution. Furthermore, our method allows us to investigate the effects of intracellular noise, i.e. fluctuations of the birth rate, on collective properties such as travelling wave velocity. We show that the combination of population and birth-rate noise gives rise to large fluctuations of the birth rate in the region at the leading edge of front, which cannot be accounted for by the coarse-grained model. Such fluctuations have non-trivial effects on the wave velocity. Beyond the development of a new hybrid method, we thus conclude that birth-rate fluctuations are central to a quantitatively accurate description of invasive phenomena such as tumour growth., Highlights • A hybrid method for stochastic multi-scale models of cells populations that extends existing hybrid methods for reaction–diffusion system. • Our analysis unveils non-trivial macroscopic effects triggered by noise at the level of structuring variables. • Our hybrid method hugely speeds up age-structured SSA simulations while preserving stochastic effects.

Extramedullary hematopoiesis is a rare entity to consider in patients with cancer and signs of bone marrow infiltration that can involve a diagnosis challenge in clinical practice. We report the case of a metastatic prostate cancer patient progressing with liver nodes and hepatic dysfunction symptoms that presented a great response to an alternative chemotherapy schedule regimen used to avoid liver toxicity of taxanes.

Joint models for a wide class of response variables and longitudinal measurements consist on a mixed-effects model to fit longitudinal trajectories whose random effects enter as covariates in a generalized linear model for the primary response. They provide a useful way to assess association between these two kinds of data, which in clinical studies are often collected jointly on a series of individuals and may help understanding, for instance, the mechanisms of recovery of a certain disease or the efficacy of a given therapy. When a nonlinear mixed-effects model is used to fit the longitudinal trajectories, the existing estimation strategies based on likelihood approximations have been shown to exhibit some computational efficiency problems (De la Cruz et al., 2011). In this article we consider a Bayesian estimation procedure for the joint model with a nonlinear mixed-effects model for the longitudinal data and a generalized linear model for the primary response. The proposed prior structure allows for the implementation of an MCMC sampler. Moreover, we consider that the errors in the longitudinal model may be correlated. We apply our method to the analysis of hormone levels measured at the early stages of pregnancy that can be used to predict normal versus abnormal pregnancy outcomes. We also conduct a simulation study to assess the importance of modelling correlated errors and quantify the consequences of model misspecification.

Abstract

Se planteó el siguiente problema: ¿Cuáles son los factores de riesgo relacionados con el abandono de métodos anticonceptivos artificiales en el Centro de Salud Monterrey de Huaraz, durante el año 2012?, con el objetivo general de identificar los factores de riesgo relacionados con el abandono de métodos anticonceptivos artificiales en el Centro de Salud Monterrey. Hipótesis: Los factores de riesgo relacionados con el abandono de métodos anticonceptivos artificiales en el Centro de Salud Monterrey de Huaraz son los factores generales, socio-económicos, el entorno social, la actitud del personal de salud y los efectos secundarios del método. Investigación epidemiológica de casos y controles, con una muestra de 210 usuarias discontinuadoras (casos) y 210 usuarias continuadoras (controles). Se usó como instrumentos dos cuestionarios, la información se procesó mediante el programa SPSS V19.0, y la contrastación de la hipótesis mediante la prueba estadística Odds Ratio (OR). Se concluyó que los factores generales, socio-económicos, el entorno social, la actitud del personal de salud y los efectos secundarios del método se constituyen en factores de riesgo del abandono de métodos anticonceptivos artificiales en el Centro de Salud Monterrey de Huaraz, con excepción de la paridad, ocupación e influencia de la comunidad

Abstract

We survey some lower bounds on the function in the title based on matroid theory and address the following problem by Dosa etal. (2004): Determine the smallest number of circuits in a loopless matroid with no parallel elements and with a given size and rank. In the graphic 3-connected case we provide a lower bound which is a product of a linear function of the number of vertices and an exponential function of the average degree. We also prove that, for p≥38, every 3-connected graph with p vertices has at least as many cycles as the wheel with p vertices.

Abstract

Miocene to Quaternary large basaltic plateaus occur in the back-arc domain of the Andean chain in Patagonia. They are thought to result from the ascent of subslab asthenospheric magmas through slab windows generated from subducted segments of the South Chile Ridge (SCR). We have investigated three volcanic centres from the Lago General Carrera-Buenos Aires area (46-47 degrees S) located above the inferred position of the slab window corresponding to a segment subducted 6 Ma ago. (1) The Quaternary Rio Murta transitional basalts display major, trace elements, and Sr and Nd isotopic features similar to those of oceanic basalts from the SCR and from the Chile Triple Junction near Taitao Peninsula (e.g., (Sr-87/Sr-86)(o)=0.70396-0.70346 and epsilon Nd=+5.5-+3.0). We consider them as derived from the melting of a Chile Ridge asthenospheric mantle source containing a weak subduction component. (2) The Plio-Quaternary (< 3.3 Ma) post-plateau basanites from Meseta del Lago Buenos Aires (MLBA), Argentina, likely derive from small degrees of melting of OIB-type mantle sources involving the subslab asthenosphere and the enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle. (3) The main plateau basaltic volcanism in this region is represented by the 12.4-3.3-Ma-old MLBA basalts and the 8.2-4.4-Ma-old basalts from Meseta Chile Chico (MCC), Chile. Two groups can be distinguished among these main plateau basalts. The first group includes alkali basalts and trachybasalts displaying typical OIB signatures and thought to derive from predominantly asthenospheric mantle sources similar to those of the post-plateau MLBA basalts, but through slightly larger degrees of melting. The second one, although still dominantly alkalic, displays incompatible element signatures intermediate between those of OIB and arc magmas (e.g., La/Nb > 1 and TiO2< 2 wt.%). These intermediate basalts differ from their strictly alkalic equivalents by having lower High Field Strength Element (HFSE) and higher epsilon Nd (up to +5.4). These features are consistent with their derivation from an enriched mantle source contaminated by ca. 10% rutile-bearing restite of altered oceanic crust. The petrogenesis of the studied Mio-Pliocene basalts from MLBA and MCC is consistent with contributions of the subslab asthenosphere, the South American subcontinental lithospheric mantle and the subducted Pacific oceanic crust to their sources. However, their chronology of emplacement is not consistent with an ascent through an asthenospheric window opened as a consequence of the subduction of segment SCR-1, which entered the trench at 6 Ma. Indeed. magmatic activity was already important between 12 and 8 Ma in MLBA and MCC as well as in southernmost plateaus, i.e., 6 Ma before the subduction of the SCR-1 segment. We propose a geodynamic model in which 0113 and intermediate magmas derived from deep subslab asthenospheric mantle did uprise through a tear-in-the-slab, which formed when the southernmost segments of the SCR collided with the Chile Trench around 15 Ma. During their ascent, they interacted with the Patagonian supraslab mantle and, locally, with slivers of subducted Pacific oceanic crust that contributed to the geochemical signature of the intermediate basafts.
