Background: The burden of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) in cervical cancer remains a major public health challenge in developing countries, like Togo. Precancerous lesions include all cellular abnormalities that have malignant potential that can develop into cancer. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with precancerous cervical lesions in HIV-infected women in our context. Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out from November 31, 2022, to January 31, 2023, in an HIV care center in Lomé (Non-Governmental Organization Espoir Vie Togo [NGO EVT] Grand-Lomé-Togo). Results: A total of 271 women were included with a mean age of 47.0 years and a standard deviation of 10.0 years, among whom 20.7% do not have any scholar education. Only 6.7% of them had previously performed cervical smear examinations. The prevalence of precancerous cervical lesions observed in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (PLHIV) was 11.4% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 5.0 to 15.4. Cytological abnormalities were marked by low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) (5.1%), followed by the presence of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASCUS) (3.5%). A statistically significant association was found between parity and the presence of precancerous lesions ( P = .014). Conclusions: In this study, more than 1 out of 10 women living with HIV had precancerous cervical lesions, and parity was the factor associated. The implementation of a systematic screening program for precancerous cervical lesions and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection integrated into HIV care is necessary for early treatment.

Abstract Background vulvar cancer, once predominantly diagnosed in older women, is increasingly being diagnosed in younger individuals, due to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infection. Our study aimed to describe the epidemiological and histopathological aspects of vulvar cancer in Togo and its associated factors. Methods This was a cross-sectional study, conducted on vulvar cancer cases histologically diagnosed at the Pathological Laboratory of Lomé over a period of 17-years (2005–2021). Parameters investigated included age, occupation, risk factors, sample nature, macroscopic tumor aspects, histological types, therapeutic intervenions, and prognostic outcomes. Results A total of 32 cases of vulvar cancer were collected, yieding an annual frequency of 1.88 cases. The average age of the patients was 48±14.12 years with extremes of 27 years and 82 years. Housewives accounted for the largest proportion of cases (37.5%). Among the 32 cases, 27 had identifiable risk factors, with HPV infection being the most prevalentr (33.3%). The ulcero-budding aspect was most frequently observed, and squamous cell carcinoma was the most common histological type, with the majority being well differentiated (89.3%). Statistically significant associations were found between risk factors and histological types, risk factors and degrees of differentiation, as well as between histological types and good differentiation of vulvar cancers. The 3-year survival was estimated at 78.13%. Conclusion The incidence of vulvar cancer is increasing in Togo, particularly among young, primarily due to HPV infection.

Bell peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) are prone to chilling injury (CI) when stored at temperatures below 7 °C. Melatonin, a natural plant regulator, plays a critical role in defending against different pre- and post-harvest abiotic stresses, including those associated with cold storage. This study aimed to assess the effects of applying exogenous melatonin alone and in combination with a commercial wax on the CI tolerance, postharvest life, and potential biomarker search of red bell peppers. In the initial experiment, the effective melatonin concentration to reduce CI effects was determined. Peppers were sprayed with either distilled water (control) or a melatonin aqueous solution (M100 = 100 μM or M500 = 500 μM) and then stored for 33 d at 4 °C, followed by 2 d at 20 °C. The M500 treatment proved to be more effective in reducing fruit CI incidence (superficial scalds) and metabolic rate, while weight loss, softening, and color were comparable to the control. A second experiment assessed the potential synergistic effects of a combined melatonin and commercial wax treatment on pepper CI and quality. Fruits were sprayed with distilled water (control), melatonin (M500), commercial wax (Wax), or the combined treatment (Wax + M500) and stored for 28 d at 4 °C, followed by 2 d at 20 °C. The Wax + M500 was the most effective in significantly reducing the incidence of fruit CI symptoms and calyx fungal infection. Furthermore, this combined treatment enhanced fruit weight loss prevention compared with individual melatonin or wax treatment. Also, Wax + M500-treated peppers exhibited notable proline accumulation, indicative of a metabolic response counteracting the cold effects, resulting in better fruit stress acclimation. This treatment also preserved the peppers’ color and antioxidant capacity. In summary, these findings highlight the suitability of applying a combined Wax + M500 treatment as a highly effective strategy to enhance the CI tolerance of peppers and extend their postharvest life.

Introducción: el bienestar estudiantil es un eje central en la gestión universitaria de calidad considerando que la salud mental influye en el funcionamiento del individuo en diversas áreas vitales. Objetivo: caracterizar el estado de salud mental y el bienestar psicológico de estudiantes de la Facultad de Filosofía de la Universidad Nacional del Este (FAFI-UNE) en Alto Paraná, Paraguay. Materiales y métodos: estudio descriptivo-correlacional de corte transeccional. Se recolectaron datos demográficos, académicos y sobre salud mental. Se utilizó el Cuestionario de Salud General de Goldberg (GHQ-12) y la Escala de Bienestar Psicológico (BIEPS-A) con coeficientes alfa de Cronbach 0,90 y 0,80, respectivamente. Resultados: participaron 266 alumnos, 84% de género femenino, 76,7% soltero, 62% con trabajo remunerado, 52,3% independiente y 5% con tratamiento para problemas de salud mental. Abstract Background Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women worldwide. The objective of this study was to identify factors associated with late diagnosis of breast cancer in Togolese women. Methods We conducted a prospective cross-sectional study with descriptive and analytical purposes on cases of breast cancer in women in 2021, in Togo. The patients included in this study were women followed in the gynecology department for stages III and IV breast cancer. Results We included 62 cases of breast cancer. The average age of the patients was 38.6 ± 12.5 years with extremes of 17 and 76 years. The breast nodule was the most common reason for consultation in 75.8% of cases. The histological types diagnosed were invasive carcinoma of non-specific type (58; 93.55%), mucinous carcinoma (3; 4.84%) and lobular carcinoma (1; 1.61%). For the stage of the cancer, 43 patients were stage III (69.4%) and 19 stage IV (30.6%). In multivariate analysis, the factors associated with late diagnosis of breast cancer were: fear of diagnosis (aOR = 1.29; p = 0.0014), long delay in diagnosis (aOR = 2.62; p = 0.0001) and failure to perform breast self-examination (aOR = 1.68; p = 0.0022). Conclusion The fear of the diagnosis, the absence of self-examination of the breasts and the use of traditional treatment and self-medication in first intention constituted the essential factors of the late diagnosis of breast cancer. Strategies should be put in place at the national level to impact on these factors for an early diagnosis of breast cancer.

Mutationsin epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) are found in approximately 48% of Asian and 19% of Western patients with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), leading to aggressive tumor growth. While tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) like gefitinib and osimertinib target this mutation, treatments often face challenges such as metastasis and resistance. To address this, we developed physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for both drugs, simulating their distribution within the primary tumor and metastases following oral administration. These models, combined with a mechanistic knowledge-based disease model of EGFR-mutated LUAD, allow us to predict the tumor’s behavior under treatment considering the diversity within the tumor cells due to different mutations. The combined model reproduces the drugs’ distribution within the body, as well as the effects of both gefitinib and osimertinib on EGFR-activation-induced signaling pathways. In addition, the disease model encapsulates the heterogeneity within the tumor through the representation of various subclones. Each subclone is characterized by unique mutation profiles, allowing the model to accurately reproduce clinical outcomes, including patients’ progression, aligning with RECIST criteria guidelines (version 1.1). Datasets used for calibration came from NEJ002 and FLAURA clinical trials. The quality of the fit was ensured with rigorous visual predictive checks and statistical tests (comparison metrics computed from bootstrapped, weighted log-rank tests: 98.4% (NEJ002) and 99.9% (FLAURA) similarity). In addition, the model was able to predict outcomes from an independent retrospective study comparing gefitinib and osimertinib which had not been used within the model development phase. This output validation underscores mechanistic models’ potential in guiding future clinical trials by comparing treatment efficacies and identifying patients who would benefit most from specific TKIs. Our work is a step towards the design of a powerful tool enhancing personalized treatment in LUAD. It could support treatment strategy evaluations and potentially reduce trial sizes, promising more efficient and targeted therapeutic approaches. Following its consecutive prospective validations with the FLAURA2 and MARIPOSA trials (validation metrics computed from bootstrapped, weighted log-rank tests: 94.0% and 98.1%, respectively), the model could be used to generate a synthetic control arm.

Background: Esophagus cancer is cancer of poor prognosis, of often late diagnosis. The objective of this study was to describe the factors associated with esophagus cancers in the Togolese population. Methods: It was a retrospective descriptive, cross-sectional study, on esophagus cancers histologically diagnosed at the Pathological Laboratory of Lomé over a period of 31 years (1990-2021). Results: We have collected 144 cases of esophagus cancer. The average age of patients was 57 ± 12 years, and the sex ratio was 2.34. The most applicant service was the service of Hepato Gastroenterology of CHU Campus (30.6%). Alcohol (57.6%), tobacco (45.8%) were the most present risk factors. Biopsies were the most addressed (97.2%). The average duration of symptom evolution was 6.42 months and the main symptom at the time of diagnosis was dysphagia (36.8%). The location of cancer was the lower third for 71.5% of cases. At histology, epidermoid carcinoma was the dominant type (90.3%). Abstract Background Prostate cancer is a public health problem and increasingly diagnosed in men under 50 years of age. This cancer occurs much more in subjects of advanced age, generally over sixty. The aim of the study was to describe the epidemiological, clinical and histopathological aspects of prostate cancer in men under the age of 50 in Togo. Methods It was a retrospective descriptive, cross-sectional study of histologically confirmed cases of prostate cancer in young adults at the Pathological Laboratory of Lomé over a period of 10 years (2011–2020). Results In total, 29 cases of prostate cancer in patients under 50 years of age. The proportion of prostate cancers in men under 50 was 0.7% of all prostate cancers, The average age of the patients was 45 years with extremes of 35 and 49 years. Twelve patients had a family history of prostate cancer, with a statistically significant relationship between the existence of a family history of prostate cancer and the age of onset of the cancer (p-value = 0.03). The dominant clinical information was prostatic hypertrophy (40.37%), followed by acute urine retention (20.69%) and micturition disorders (17.27%). The median Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) was 188 ng/ml with extremes of 20 ng/ml and 2100 ng/ml. A large proportion of patients had a PSA between 100 and 500 ng/ml. Histologically, they were all prostatic acinar adenocarcinomas. These adenocarcinomas were well differentiated (48%) and moderately differentiated (38%). The predominant histoprognostic grade was ISUP (International Society of Urological Pathology) grade 1 which was noted in 65.52%, followed by grade 2 in 20.69%. Conclusion Prostate cancer in men under 50 years of age is relatively rare in Togo, sometimes occurring in the context of a family history of prostate cancer. Hence the importance of raising awareness among the male population, especially with a family history of prostate cancer, to start screening early, around the age of 40.

Introduction: The frequency of breast cancer in young women, corresponding to women under 40 years of age; varies from 5% to 7% in developed countries. The objective of this study was to contribute to the improvement of the management of breast cancer in young women in Togo, by establishing the molecular classification of these cancers. Methodology: This was a retrospective descriptive and analytical study from January 2010 to December 2020. Results: About 35 cases of breast cancer were identified in women under 40 years of age. The average age was 35.4 ± 3.5 years. The right breast was affected in 18 cases (51.43%). Histologically, 30 cases (85.72%) were invasive carcinoma of no special type (NST), 2 cases (5.71%) were invasive lobular carcinoma and micro-papillary carcinoma respectively, and 1 case (2.86%) was tubular carcinoma. There were 6 cases (17.1%) of grade I, 25 cases (71.4%) of grade II, and 4 cases (11.4%) of grade III. Molecularly, there were 20 cases (57.1%) of triple-negative subtype, 6 cases (17.1%) of Luminal B subtype, 05 cases (14.3%) of HER2-enriched subtype and 4 cases (11.4%) of Luminal A subtype. Conclusion: Breast cancers of young Togolese women express very weakly hormone receptors, with a predominance of a triple negative subtype.

Renal sarcomas are very rare malignant tumours with a very poor prognosis. Renal leiomyosarcoma, a malignant tumour of smooth muscle origin, is the most common histological type. The article reports a case of leiomyosarcoma of renal location, with a review of the literature. A 38-year-old female patient, with no previous pathological history, consulted the nephrology department of the Teaching Hospital of Lomé for abdominal pain that had been present for 4 years. Histology showed a tumour proliferation of fasciculated architecture, made of spindle cells arranged in long bundles, with cytonuclear atypia and cytoarchitectural abnormalities. Immunohistochemical examination showed positive staining for smooth muscle actin, h-caldesmone, desmin and CD34 and negative for pancytokeratin (AE1/AE3), myogenin and PS100. Renal leiomyosarcoma is an exceptional malignancy. It remains the most common renal sarcoma, the differential diagnosis of which is based on immunohistochemical findings.

Abstract Background Angiosarcoma is an endothelial malignant tumor; angiosarcoma located in the breast is extremely rare, less than 0.01%. We report a case of a giant angiosarcoma diagnosed postmortem in a 16-year-old girl in a resource-constrained country. Case presentation A 16-year-old black African girl was admitted for altered consciousness and a left breast tumor. She was admitted in a state of apparent death. Her death was confirmed on clinical examination. A postmortem biopsy of the mammary tumor showed standard histology of a proliferation of fusiform or rounded tumor cells in places, which were not very cohesive with marked anisokaryosis and numerous foci of tumor necrosis. Immunohistochemistry showed a positivity of CD31 and factor VIII markers with a proliferation index (Ki-67) estimated at 30%. Conclusion Primary angiosarcoma of the breast is exceptional in adolescents and has a poor prognosis, especially in countries with limited resources.

Abstract Introduction Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare, idiopathic, inflammatory, neutrophilic dermatitis characterized by sterile skin ulceration. It can be associated with an underlying pathology, especially inflammatory bowel disease and hematological malignancies. Its association with a malignant pathology in the context of a paraneoplastic syndrome is more commonly described in hematological malignancies, with solid tumors being rare. Case report We report a case of a 39-year-old West African man with pyoderma gangrenosum that developed 6 months before the clinical expression of rectosigmoid junction cancer. The removal of the cancer resulted in the patient’s recovery. Conclusion Recurrent pyoderma gangrenosum lesions may be the expression of colonic adenocarcinoma in paraneoplastic syndrome and require colonoscopy, especially in at-risk patients.

Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess the knowledge of medical students in Lomé about these means of screening for prostate cancer in a context of limited resources and controversy about prostate cancer screening, and to identify the determinants associated with these results. Methods: This was a prospective descriptive and cross-sectional study conducted in the form of a survey of medical students regularly enrolled at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Lomé for the 2019–2020 academic years. Results: Of the 1635 eligible students, 1017 correctly completed the form, corresponding to a rate of 62.20%. The average age was 22 ± 3.35 years. The sex ratio (M/F) was 2.5. Undergraduate students were the most represented (53.69%). Students who had not received any training on prostate cancer were the most represented (57.13%). Only 12.88% of the students had completed a training course in urology. Concerning the prostate-specific antigen blood test, there was a statistically significant relationship between the students’ knowledge and some of their socio-demographic characteristics, namely age (p value = 0.0037; 95% confidence interval (0.50–1.77)); gender (p value = 0.0034; 95% confidence interval (1.43–2.38)); study cycle (p value ˂ 0.0001; 95% confidence interval (0.56–5.13)) and whether or not they had completed a placement in a urology department (p value ˂ 0.0001; 95% confidence interval (0.49–1.55)). On the contrary, there was no statistically significant relationship between students’ knowledge of the digital rectal examination and their study cycle (p value = 0.082; 95% confidence interval (0.18–3.44)). Conclusion: Medical students in Lomé have a good theoretical knowledge and a fair practical level of the digital rectal examination clinical examination and an average theoretical knowledge and a below average practical level of prostate-specific antigen, increasing however along the curriculum in the context of prostate cancer screening.

Abstract Background Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the endometrium is an extremely rare tumor with poorly understood pathogenesis. Case presentation We report a case of a 28-year-old Togolese woman who had consulted for vaginal bleeding and pelvic pain. Ultrasound showed thickening of the lining of the endometrium, and biopsy curettage was done. Anatomopathological examination was noteworthy for a proliferation of squamous cells often connected by union bridges arranged in tumor lobules with dyskeratotic maturation. Immunohistochemistry showed epithelial membrane antigen positivity, anti-pancytokeratin 1 markers of tumor cells positivity, chromogranin A negativity, actin negativity, S100 negativity, estrogen receptor negativity, and progesterone receptor negativity. In situ hybridization had objectified human papillomavirus genotypes 16/18. The diagnosis of primary squamous cell carcinoma of the endometrium associated with human papilloma virus was retained. A hysterectomy was performed, and the tumor was classified pT1N0M0. Conclusion The pathogenesis of this endometrial cancer is complex, and its association with human papillomavirus does not explain its genesis.

Introduction Identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgeries is recommended to preserve its functionl integrity. This study aims to determine the relationship between the recurrent laryngeal nerves and the inferior thyroid arteries during thyroidectomies, as well as any particularities and intraoperative complications. Materials and Methods Observational cross-sectional study of all culturally Togolese patients who underwent thyroidectomy with nerve dissection in the ENT department of Sylvanus Olympio University Hospital from 1 January 2013 to 30 June 2017, i.e. a period of 4 years 6 months. Results The sex ratio was 0.14 i.e., 7 women for 1 man and the average age of 41.82 years. Tissue nodules and multinodular goiters were the most operated lesions in 40.97% and 33.04%, respectively, with a plunging character in 17 cases. We had 306 cases of nerve dissection but the recurrent laryngeal nerve could not be found in 1 case on the right. It was globally retro-arterial (under the trunk and under the branches of the inferior thyroid artery) in 75.08% of cases with prevalence of the truncal, pre arterial situation in 16.07% and inter-arterial in 3.28% cases. The nerve was non-recurrent (type II pathway) in 1 case on the right. There was no recurrence injury. Parathyroid devascularization (5 cases) was autotransplanted. The surgeon's experience did not have a significant impact on the occurrence of intraoperative complications (p = 0.24). Conclusion This observational cross-sectional anatomical-surgical study supports the existing data on the relationships between the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the inferior thyroid artery by confirming their variability. Nevertheless, it was marked by the predominance of the retro arterial truncal situation of the nerve unlike the literature that most often reports a situation of the nerve under the arterial branches.

Abstract Objectives The purpose of this study was to study the epidemiological and clinical profile of adolescents with suicidal thoughts, with or without suicide attempts, and to identify associated factors. Results A total of 155 (16.5%) of the 941 adolescents interviewed had suicidal thoughts. The average age of the respondents was 18 ± 2.1 years. The sex ratio (m/f) was 1.4. With regard to marital status, 70.2% were single and 29.8% were in a relationship with a cohabiting partner. Family history of suicide was reported in 40%. In their personal history, eight were infected with HIV, three were chronic ethylic and two were diabetics. Forty-six (29.7%) of the 155 adolescents who had suicidal ideation had ever had a suicide attempt. Teens affected by suicide lived in a boarding school in 25.8%, with one parent in 23.9% and 50.3% with both parents. Factors associated with suicide attempts were female sex (p = 0.0107), age over 18 years (p = 0.0177), living in a couple (p = 0.0316), underlying immunodepression (HIV infection, p = 0.0059, sickle cell disease, p = 0.0043) and having a family history of suicides (p = 0.0461).

Background. Herbal medication is a worldwide and ancient practice, mostly in developing countries, where a large part of the population is involved in this practice. Hence, studies must be conducted to evaluate their safety and efficiency to avoid or prevent toxicological risks due to their usage. In Togo, Carissa spinarum is a medicinal plant belonging to Apocynaceae family, used as an aphrodisiac or to heal some ailments including malaria, sickle cell anemia, hypertension, pain, and asthma. Notwithstanding its several ethnomedicinal benefits, just a few toxicological data associated with its chronic use are available. Objective. Therefore, this study aims to assess the toxicity of an ethanolic root extract of Carissa spinarum in Wistar rats. Methods. The 90-day oral toxicity process following OECD TG 408 guidelines is used. Male Wistar rats received Carissa spinarum root hydroethanolic extract at 500 and 1000 mg/kg for 90 days by oral gavage. Body weight changes, hematological and blood biochemical parameters, organ weight changes, malondialdehyde as a lipoperoxidation marker expressed according to tissue proteins, and histopathology of vital organs were assessed. Results. No signs of toxicity or mortality were observed during the 90 days experiment. Hematological parameters have not shown any treatment-related abnormalities. Abstract: Cholesterol is a major component of mammalian plasma membranes that not only affects the physical properties of the lipid bilayer but also is the function of many membrane proteins including G protein-coupled receptors. The oxytocin receptor (OXTR) is involved in parturition and lactation of mammals and in their emotional and social behaviors. Cholesterol acts on OXTR as an allosteric modulator inducing a high-affinity state for orthosteric ligands through a molecular mechanism that has yet to be determined. Using the ion channel-coupled receptor technology, we developed a functional assay of cholesterol modulation of G protein-coupled receptors that is independent of intracellular signaling pathways and operational in living cells. Using this assay, we discovered a stable binding of cholesterol molecules to the receptor when it adopts an orthosteric ligand-bound state. This stable interaction preserves the cholesterol-dependent activity of the receptor in cholesterol-depleted membranes. This mechanism was confirmed using time-resolved FRET experiments on WT OXTR expressed in CHO cells. Consequently, a positive cross-regulation sequentially occurs in OXTR between cholesterol and orthosteric ligands.

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation has been considered a deleterious agent that living organisms must avoid. However, many of the acclimation changes elicited by UV induce a wide range of positive effects in plant physiology through the elicitation of secondary antioxidant metabolites and natural defenses. Therefore, this fact has changed the original UV conception as a germicide and potentially damaging agent, leading to the concept that it is worthy of application in harvested commodities to take advantage of its beneficial responses. Four decades have already passed since postharvest UV radiation applications began to be studied. During this time, UV treatments have been successfully evaluated for different purposes, including the selection of raw materials, the control of postharvest diseases and human pathogens, the elicitation of nutraceutical compounds, the modulation of ripening and senescence, and the induction of cross-stress tolerance. Besides the microbicide use of UV radiation, the effect that has received most attention is the elicitation of bioactive compounds as a defense mechanism. UV treatments have been shown to induce the accumulation of phytochemicals, including ascorbic acid, carotenoids, glucosinolates, and, more frequently, phenolic compounds. The nature and extent of this elicitation have been reported to depend on several factors, including the product type, maturity, cultivar, UV spectral region, dose, intensity, and radiation exposure pattern. Even though in recent years we have greatly increased our understanding of UV technology, some major issues still need to be addressed. These include defining the operational conditions to maximize UV radiation efficacy, reducing treatment times, and ensuring even radiation exposure, especially under realistic processing conditions. This will make UV treatments move beyond their status as an emerging technology and boost their adoption by industry.

Abstract Objective The purpose of our study was to describe the histological diagnosed of the Basidiobolomycosis cases from 1990 to 2017 (28 years) in the only Pathology Anatomy Laboratory in Togo. Results A total of 12 cases of suspected Basidiobolomycosis have been identified. The sex ratio (M/F) was 2. The average age of the patients was 24.8 ± 1.6 years. Six patients (6/12) had a pathological history: HIV infection (n = 4 cases) and tuberculosis (n = 2 cases). The clinical manifestations were localized to pure skin (n = 9 cases), skin and mucous digestive (n = 2 cases) and disseminated (n = 1 cases). Direct mycological examination and culture in 4 patients was positive in 3 patients. The samples examined consisted of 11 cutaneous biopsies measuring 1–3 cm and a biopsy of the intestinal mucosa. Histology showed granulomatous inflammation of the dermohypodermal site with numerous giant cells associated with eosinophilic polynuclear cells, in which there are 5–7 mm non-septate, irregular mycelial filaments. Patients were treated with ketoconazole at a dose of 10 mg/kg daily. The progression of the patients’ condition was favorable after 4 weeks of treatment with a regression of the closets size. Patients were completely healed after 8 weeks of treatment, without recurrence after 6 months. No deaths have been recorded.

Abstract Objectives Evaluate the practice of sexuality, contraception and the risk of sexually transmitted infections among students in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Lomé, Togo. Results Three hundred and sixteen (316) students were interviewed, with a response rate of 43.3%. The average age of students completing the form was 21.4 ± 2.7 years and their sex ratio was 2.2. Of this number of students who completed the form, 51.8% have already had sex. The mean age of first intercourse was 17.9 ± 3.2 years; 70.3% were heterosexual. Regarding the number of sexual partners, 48.5% of students had more than one partner, of whom 15.9% had at least 5 sexual partners. 21.5% of these students had only one sexual intercourse per month. Regarding contraception among students with the card, 67.5% of students used a method of contraception. Among those using contraceptives, it was a 55.3% condom, followed by the Ogino method at 14.1%. Some of our respondents used more than one method of contraception and 28.5% of respondents indicated that their partners used a method of contraception. For STIs, 10.8% of students completing the form were already infected. Gonorrhea was reported in 30.4% of cases, candidiasis in 26.1% of cases.

Se postula que la forma en que las mujeres son representadas en la fotografía pública en Uruguay entre 1890 y 1950 puede ser comprendida a través de dos procedimientos: la apelación a la excepcionalidad como mito fundante del imaginario social uruguayo y el mensaje por ausencia. El artículo describe el archivo público de la imagen y sus tematizaciones sobre la base de ocho mil fotografías digitalizadas que corresponden al período de análisis. Se hace foco en un acontecimiento histórico: el plebiscito de 1927 en la villa de Cerro Chato en que las mujeres votaron por primera vez en el Uruguay. El modo en que este hecho fue narrado por la prensa y conservado en la memoria pública hasta el presente ilustra los procedimientos antes mencionados y permite inferir cómo se construye una narrativa androcéntrica. Esta comunicación es un producto derivado de la investigación titulada Mujeres madres en la fotografía pública del Uruguay.

Partiendo de las ideas formuladas de E. Haeckel en el siglo XIX sobre la ontogenia y la filogenia se repasan algunos ejemplos de producción de teorías en el campo psi. La posibilidad de ver la historia de la especie desde la historia evolutiva de un individuo resultó una idea potente e inspiradora. En el artículo se hace especial énfasis en la teoría propuesta por Arnaldo Rascovsky a fines de la década del cincuenta del siglo pasado y se revisan algunos antecedentes como las ideas de Otto Rank en el Trauma del Nacimiento y la psicohistoria de Lloyd DeMause. La infancia y las construcciones teóricas sobre el psiquismo de las etapas prenatales de dudosa existencia, constituyen una oportunidad para establecer conexiones entre los desarrollos del campo psi, el discurso científico y el pensamiento marginal.

This study is a report on a case of papillary carcinoma of the kidney revealed by an abdominal contusion. The results of radiological investigations were discordant with the low intensity of the shock. The treatment consisted of radical nephrectomy because of the suspicion of a pre-existing malignancy. Histological analysis revealed a papillary carcinoma pT3N0M0. We focus on the need for performing diagnostic tests in order to avoid missing a pre-existing anomaly to the kidney trauma.

Our study aimed to describe the epidemiological, clinical, and diagnostic aspects of African histoplasmosis in Togo through a descriptive and cross-sectional study on histological diagnosed African histoplasmosis in Pathology Department of Lomé from 2002 to 2016 (15 years). A total of 17 cases of African histoplasmosis were diagnosed. The sex ratio (M/F) was 1.8. The annual incidence was 1.1 cases. The mean age of the patients was 27.2 ± 0.4 years. All our patients were of social categories with a low socioeconomic level. HIV infection was known in 3 patients and one patient contracted tuberculosis. The clinical manifestations were cutaneous in 7 cases, cutaneous and mucous in 3 cases, cutaneous and lymph node in 3 cases, cutaneous and bone in 2 cases, and disseminated in 2 cases. The samples examined consisted of 14 cutaneous biopsies measuring 2-3 cm and 3 ganglionic biopsies each measuring 4 cm of major axis. Histologically, all cases were of chronic form made of granulomatous reaction with ovoid yeasts measuring between 1 and 2 microns. Despite the low frequency of this disease in our country, it should be kept constantly in mind before any granulomatous lesions, especially in the context of the HIV pandemic.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the breast is a rare disease and has been scarcely reported by African authors. The authors report a case of breast NEC in a 13-year-old African girl initially diagnosed as an atypical adenofibroma by ultrasonography. Ultrasound-guided biopsy and conventional histological examination indicated two potential diagnoses: primary malignant non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and undifferentiated carcinoma. According to immunohistochemistry performed on paraffin blocks in France, infiltrating ductal carcinoma with a strong neuroendocrine component was confirmed by CD56, CD57, and chromogranin A markers.

We report a case of poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the vulva induced by human papillomavirus in a 23-year-old woman, in whom we experienced diagnostic difficulties.

Abstract Three bulls of the Montbéliarde breed that exhibited fertility rates lower than 30% following more than 400 artificial inseminations were examined. Semen quality (sperm motility and morphology) from these bulls was normal. Fertilizing ability estimated from in vitro embryo production results was studied for two of them. In vitro production rate was very low for one bull (A) and normal for the other (B). Cytogenetic analyses were carried out on the three bulls using chromosome banding techniques. These analyses revealed a reciprocal translocation (12;17)(q22;q14) in bull B. Based on family analyses, the hypothesis of a de novo origin of this rearrangement is proposed.

Abstract The chromosomal control of pig populations has been widely developed in France over the last ten years. By December 31st, 2006, 13 765 individuals had been karyotyped in our laboratory, 62% of these since 2002. Ninety percent were young purebred boars controlled before service in artificial insemination centres, and 3% were hypoprolific boars. So far, 102 constitutional structural chromosomal rearrangements (67 since 2002) have been described. Fifty-six were reciprocal translocations and 8 peri- or paracentric inversions. For the first time since the beginning of the programme and after more than 11 000 pigs had been karyotyped, one Robertsonian translocation was identified in 2005 and two others in 2006. The estimated prevalence of balanced structural chromosomal rearrangements in a sample of more than 7700 young boars controlled before service was 0.47%. Twenty-one of the 67 rearrangements described since 2002 were identified in hypoprolific boars. All were reciprocal translocations. Twelve mosaics (XX/XY in 11 individuals, XY/XXY in one individual) were also diagnosed. Two corresponded to hypoprolific boars, and three to intersexed animals. The results presented in this communication would justify an intensification of the chromosomal control of French and, on a broader scale, European and North-American pig populations.

INTRODUÇÃO: O artigo apresenta experiência de implantação e implementação do quesito cor/raça nos serviços de atendimento às DST/Aids no Estado de São Paulo (ESP), através de parceria firmada em 2004 entre a Divisão de Prevenção do Programa Estadual DST/Aids do ESP e o Centro de Estudos das Relações de Trabalho e Desigualdade (CEERT), visando executar um projeto serviços. Trinta e cinco serviços de atendimento às DST/Aids foram envolvidos no projeto e foram realizadas, de 2004 e 2006, sete oficinas de sensibilização e monitoramento do processo de implantação do quesito cor/raça, segundo metodologia de construção participativa e compartilhada do conhecimento, proposta pelo CEERT. Como resultado, verificou-se que o processo de discussão e de reflexão da temática étnico-racial torna a implantação do quesito cor/raça mais fácil. Os folhetos e cartazes propiciam o esclarecimento de profissionais e usuários, facilitando a implantação do quesito. Investir na capacitação dos profissionais da recepção dos usuários é importante para a implantação desse quesito nos serviços de saúde. CONCLUSÃO: A partir desta experiência o Grupo de Trabalho Etnias do Programa Estadual DST/Aids vem ampliando sua atuação. Em 2006, com a parceria das profissionais do Instituto AMA-Psique, iniciou-se o processo para 13 novos municípios, consolidando a implantação do quesito cor/raça no ESP. Esperamos que as informações produzidas possam sensibilizar as diversas esferas, para que sejam propostas e aprovadas políticas públicas que promovam a eqüidade racial na saúde e a qualidade de vida para população negra e indígena.This paper describes the experience to implement a systematic collection of these data on color/race in the STD/Aids care services in the State of São Paulo (SSP), through a partnership signed in 2004 between the Prevention Division of the STD/Aids State Program of the SSP and CEERT (initials in Portuguese for Center of Studies on Work Relations and Inequality) to carry out a project question in these services. Thirty-five STD/Aids care services were involved in the project and between 2004 and 2006, seven workshops of sensitization and monitoring of the process of implementation of the color/race question were held. It was observed that the process of discussion and reflection on the ethnic-racial theme renders the implementation easier. The campaign material provides clarification for the team of professionals and for the users, facilitating the implementation of this question. Investing in the qualification of reception professionals is important for the implementation of this question in the health services. CONCLUSION: With this experience, the Work Group Ethnicities of the STD-Aids State Program has broadened its performance. In 2006, with the partnership of the professionals of the AMA-Psique Institute, the process was extended to 13 new cities, consolidating the implementation of the color/race question in the STD-Aids services in the SSP. We hope that the produced information can sensitize the diverse spheres, so that public policies that promote racial equity in health and quality of life for black and aboriginal population are proposed and approved.

Alterations of striatal glutamate receptors are believed to be responsible, at least in part, for the pathogenesis of l-dopa-induced dyskinesias (LID). To evaluate whether co-administration of CI-1041, a novel NMDA receptor antagonist selective for the NR1A/NR2B subtype, with l-dopa might prevent the appearance of this side effect, eight de novo parkinsonian monkeys were treated chronically orally with either l-dopa alone or l-dopa plus CI-1041 (n= 4 for each group). After 4 weeks of treatment with l-dopa alone, all four animals developed moderate dyskinesias either choreic or dystonic in nature. CI-1041 co-treatment completely prevented the induction of dyskinesias in three animals and only one monkey developed mild dyskinesias at the end of the fourth week of treatment in the l-dopa + CI-1041 group. The magnitude and duration of the antiparkinsonian action of l-dopa was similar in both groups. These results suggest that selective NMDA receptor antagonism may be interesting for managing LID in Parkinson's disease patients.

Abstract Eight new cases of reciprocal translocation in the domestic pig are described. All the rearrangements were highlighted using GTG banding techniques. Chromosome painting experiments were also carried out to confirm the proposed hypotheses and to accurately locate the breakpoints. Three translocations, rcp(4;6)(q21;p14), rcp(2;6)(p17;q27) and rcp(5;17)(p12;q13) were found in boars siring small litters (8.3 and 7.4 piglets born alive per litter, on average, for translocations 2/6 and 5/17, respectively). The remaining five, rcp(5;8)(p12;q21), rcp(15;17)(q24;q21), rcp(7;8)(q24;p21), rcp(5;8)(p11;p23) and rcp(3;15)(q27;q13) were identified in young boars controlled before entering reproduction. A decrease in prolificacy of 22% was estimated for the 3/15 translocation after reproduction of the boar carrier. A parental origin by inheritance of the translocation was established for the (5;8)(p11;p23) translocation. The overall incidence of reciprocal translocations in the French pig populations over the 2000/2001 period was estimated (0.34%).
