Background: Depression is present in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Objective : We evaluated the sociodemographic, anthropometric, and clinical features of Mexican individuals with clinical depressive symptoms in order to identify predictors for depression symptoms; finally, we evaluated if HbA1c levels could be used as a probable diagnostic of depressive symptoms in individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: The population studied consisted of 376 Mexicans with diabetes who were interviewed to collect information about comorbidities and habits. The evaluation of depressive symptoms was performed using the Hamilton scale. For a possible clinical association between HbA1c levels and depressive symptoms, we performed chi-square tests (χ2)/ t tests. A multivariate logistic regression model with the backward conditional method was used to identify predictors of depressive symptoms. An ROC curve was plotted to assess the possible role of HbA1c as a diagnostic predictive test of depression symptoms. Results: A total of 42.8% (n = 161) individuals showed clinical depressive symptoms. When comparing individuals with and without depression symptoms, those with depression symptoms showed higher levels of glucose and HbA1c; additionally, gender (p = 0.04), age (p = 0.006), HbA1c (p < 0.01), and complications related to diabetes were predictive factors for clinical depressive symptoms (p < 0.01). However, HbA1c showed a low diagnostic accuracy for depressive symptoms, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.59. Conclusions: Our findings provided evidence of the sex, age, HbA1c levels, and medical complications as predictors of clinical depressive symptoms in individuals with diabetes mellitus. Purpose: To investigate whether the same health state results in the same distribution of responses on the EQ-5D youth and adult descriptive systems. Methods: Adolescents aged 13–18 years with a range of health conditions and from the general school going population were recruited in South Africa (ZA) and Ethiopia (ET). In ZA participants completed the English EQ-5D-3L, EQ-5D-Y-3L and EQ-5D-5L in parallel. Whereas in ET participants completed the Amharic EQ-5D-5L and EQ-5D-Y-5L in parallel. Analysis aimed to describe the transition between youth and adult instruments and not differences between countries. Results: Data from 592 adolescents completing the EQ-5D-3L, EQ-5D-Y-3L and EQ-5D-5L (ZA) and 693 completing the EQ-5D-5L and EQ-5D-Y-5L (ET) were analysed. Adolescents reported more problems on the youth versions compared to the adult version for the dimension of mental health. 13% and 4% of adolescents who reported no problems on the EQ-5D-3L and EQ-5D-5L reported some problems on the EQ-5D-Y-3L respectively. This was less notable with transition between the five level versions with 4% of adolescents reporting more problems on the EQ-5D-Y-5L than the EQ-5D-5L. Very few adolescents reported severe problems (level 3 on the EQ-5D-3L or EQ-5D-Y-3L and level 4 and level 5 on the EQ-5D-5L or EQ-5D-5L) thus there was little variation between responses between the versions. In ZA, discriminatory power, measured on the Shannon's Index, was higher for Y-3L compared to 3L for pain/discomfort (ΔH′=0.11) and anxiety/depression (ΔH′=0.04) and across all dimensions for Y-3L compared to 5L. Similarly, in ET discriminatory power was higher for Y-5L than 5L (ΔH′ range 0.05–0.09). Gwet's AC showed good to very good agreement across all paired (ZA) 3L and (ET) 5L dimensions. The summary score of all EQ-5D versions were able to differentiate between known disease groups. Conclusion: Despite the overall high levels of agreement between EQ-5D instruments for youth and for adults, they do not provide identical results in terms of health state, from the same respondent. The differences were most notable for anxiety/depression. These differences in the way individuals respond to the various descriptive systems need to be taken into consideration for descriptive analysis, when transitioning between instruments, and when comparing preference-weighted scores. Background: A thorough psychosocial assessment is time-consuming, often requiring multiple sessions to uncover the psychological factors contributing to mental illness, such as depression. The duration varies depending on the severity of the patient's condition and how effectively the psychotherapist can establish rapport. However, prolonged assessment periods pose a significant risk of patient deterioration. Methods: The comprehensive psychosocial intervention, led by the Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach utilizing the Multi-Objective Optimization by Ratio Analysis (MOORA) method, played a pivotal role in identifying the key psychological factors contributing to the depression of the client among the 21 factors specified by BDI-II analysis. Results: The integration of the MOORA strategy compared to traditional psychotherapy on 254 samples demonstrates a Jaccard similarity coefficient of 0.8, with a minimum error margin of 7% (vulnerability index = 0.57), indicating a significant agreement between the two approaches, both converging towards a similar solution. For patients with extreme depression, the number of sessions reduced from 18 ± 2 to 11 ± 2, showing a 33–35% reduction (χ2 = 6.94, p = 0.008). Severe depression patients experienced a reduction from 14 ± 2 to 8 ± 1 sessions i.e., 34–39% reduction (χ2 = 8.32, p = 0.004). Moderate depression patients saw sessions drop from 9 ± 1 to 5 ± 1, i.e., 37–43% reduction (χ2 = 0.29, p = 0.001). The accuracy for detecting dominant psychological factors improved to 82.88% for extreme, 86.74% for severe, and 90.34% for moderate depression, respectively. Conclusion: The implementation of MOORA facilitated the identification and prioritization of key psychosocial intervention strategies, making the process significantly faster compared to traditional methods. This acceleration greatly enhanced the precision and efficacy of the work. Additionally, critical vulnerable factors were identified through ordered statistics and correlation analysis [Pearson (r) = 0.8929 and Spearman's rank (ρ) = 0.7551] on the Beck Depression Inventory-II model. These findings were supported by other MCDM schemes such as EDAS and TOPSIS, demonstrating high stability and robustness in dynamic decision-making environments, maintaining consistency across scenarios adapted by different psychotherapists. Overall, the combined application of MCDM (MOORA) and targeted psychological interventions yielded substantial positive outcomes in enhancing the well-being of individuals with psychological illnesses, such as depression, cognitive, affective, and somatic syndromes. Background: Poor quality of sleep is a widespread issue in modern society, and even children are being diagnosed with sleep disorders nowadays. Sleep disruption in children can lead to poor mental health in the long term. The present study aimed to evaluate the association between sleep disorders and subsequent depression in children and adolescents. Methods: This retrospective cohort study used electronic medical records from the IQVIATM Disease Analyzer database. It included children and adolescents aged 6–16 with an initial diagnosis of a sleep disorder and age- and gender-matched patients without sleep disorders treated by one of 274 office-based pediatricians in Germany between January 2010 and December 2022. The five-year cumulative incidence of depression in the cohorts with and without sleep disorders was studied with Kaplan–Meier curves using the log-rank test. Multivariable Cox regression analyses were used to assess the association between sleep disorders and depression. Results: The present study included 10,466 children and adolescents with and 52,330 without sleep disorder diagnosis (mean age 10 ± 3 years, 48% female). Within five years after the index date, 5% of sleep disorder patients and 2% of the matched non-sleep disorder cohort had been diagnosed with depression. A strong and significant association was observed between sleep disorders and subsequent depression (HR: 2.34; 95% CI: 2.09–2.63). This association was stronger in adolescents (HR: 3.78; 95% CI: 3.13–4.56) than in children. Upon the exclusion of depression diagnoses in the first year after the index date, the association between sleep disorders and depression remained strong and significant (HR: 1.92; 95% CI: 1.68–2.19). Aim. This study examined the mental health of nurse managers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Background. The COVID‐19 pandemic has affected the physical and mental health of senior nurses, including effects of shortages of staff and medical supplies. However, no study has examined this topic among nurse managers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia despite their exposure to mental stress during the pandemic. Methods. A cross‐sectional design was used to investigate the levels of depression, anxiety, stress, and general psychological distress among nurse managers in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected August 2023 to February 2024. The main tool was the reliable and validated Arabic translation of the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS‐21). Data collection was performed using an online platform. IBM SPSS software was used for data analysis. The data was analysed using multiple regression to examine the relationship between the dependent (outcome) and independent (predictor) variables. A significant p‐value was set at 0.05. Results. Stress and general psychological distress were the most common problems among nurse managers in the post‐COVID‐19 era. Individual educational attainment was the only significant predictor of anxiety, stress, and general psychological distress. Moreover, the nationalities of nurse managers were correlated with stress outcomes. Conclusions. Nursing managers are very likely to suffer from stress and general mental health problems in cases of exposure to crises. They may find the results of this study useful in understanding the factors that may play a role in the development of mental health problems during clinical work. Different strategies can be considered to alleviate depression, anxiety, and stress among managers, including the proper delegation of tasks. Top‐level management and healthcare stakeholders should give special considerations to the nationality and education level upon selecting nurse mangers at different levels. Background: Very few studies have compared different diagnostic approaches to diagnose depression in patients with cancers. Aim: To compare the different diagnostic approaches used for diagnosing depression in patients with cancers. Methodology: This cross-sectional study included 200 patients (diagnosed with cancer at least 3 months prior to recruitment) attending the outpatient services who were assessed on diagnostic and statistical manual, fifth edition (DSM-5) criteria for depression. Additionally, these patients were also assessed using the inclusive, exclusive, and substitutive criteria for depression using a semistructured interview. Patients completed Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Results: The mean age of the patients was 50.28 years (S.D. M14.11). Females outnumbered males. The mean age of onset of malignancy was 47 years (S.D 14.03), and the mean time since diagnosis of cancer was 35.45 years (S.D 36.87). The prevalence of depression was the highest (38.5%) when estimated using the PHQ-9 and was the lowest (21.5%) when assessed using exclusive criteria for depression. All approaches had high degree of concordance with the DSM-5 criteria for depression. Chronic subdural hematomas (CSDH) with isolated psychiatric presentation are rare. In this paper, we report a case of 77-year-oldfemale patient who had psychotic depression after repetitive head trauma without any neurological symptoms. The brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed an 20 mm subdural hematoma in the right frontoparietal region and a 7 mm subdural hematoma in the left frontal region. The psychiatric symptoms improved within the first week after evacuation but relapsed with the occurrence of right sided pneumocephalus. In the follow up, with the disappearance of the pneumocephalus, the psychiatric symptoms improved. It should be kept in mind that isolated psychiatric symptoms can be seen due to subdural hematoma and evacuation of the hematoma has an important role in improving the psychiatric symptoms. Background: Global research hotspots and future research trends in the neurobiological mechanisms of late-life depression (LLD) as well as its diagnosis and treatment are not yet clear. Objectives: This study profiled the current state of global research on LLD and predicted future research trends in the field. Methods: Literature with the subject term LLD was retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection, and CiteSpace software was used to perform econometric and co-occurrence analyses. The results were visualized using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and other software packages. Results: In total, 10,570 publications were included in the analysis. Publications on LLD have shown an increasing trend since 2004. The United States and the University of California had the highest number of publications, followed consecutively by China and England, making these countries and institutions the most influential in the field. Reynolds, Charles F. was the author with the most publications. The International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry was the journal with the most articles and citations. According to the co-occurrence analysis and keyword/citation burst analysis, cognitive impairment, brain network dysfunction, vascular disease, and treatment of LLD were research hotspots. Conclusion: Late-life depression has attracted increasing attention from researchers, with the number of publications increasing annually. However, many questions remain unaddressed in this field, such as the relationship between LLD and cognitive impairment and dementia, or the impact of vascular factors and brain network dysfunction on LLD. Additionally, the treatment of patients with LLD is currently a clinical challenge. Background: While depression is increasing worldwide, some patients are diagnosed as having Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), but others are diagnosed with minor depression, however, the potential neuro mechanism is unknown. Methods: Sixty-two patients with minor depression, 44 adolescents with MDD and 54 healthy adolescents participated in this study. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), both HAMD and HAMA data were collected from all of the participants. Results: The result indicates the pervasively decreased activation of BA, 11, 21, 45 and 46 were observed in the MDD group and reduced activation of BA 45 was observed in the minor depression group. However, cortical activation was not observed between the minor depression or MDD groups. Cortical activation was also not correlated with the depressive/anxious score in the minor and MDD groups separately. Conclusions: Cortical activation was pervasively decreased in the MDD group and slightly reduced in the minor depression group, which may be a potential neural mechanism. Background: The psychological well‐being of lung cancer patients is critical in‐patient care but frequently overlooked. Methods: This study, employing a cross‐sectional, questionnaire‐based design, aimed to elucidate the prevalence of depressive and anxiety symptoms among lung cancer patients and identify associated risk factors. Participants' demographic, medical history, disease stage, and pathology were systematically collected. Psychological assessment was conducted using the general anxiety disorder‐7 (GAD‐7), patient health questionnaire‐9 (PHQ‐9), and hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS). Statistical analyses were performed using SPSS software (version 25.0). Results: Out of 294 distributed questionnaires, 247 lung cancer patients were included in the final analysis, with an average completion time of 9.08 min. Notably, 32.4% exhibited depressive symptoms, while 30% displayed signs of anxiety. A significant correlation was found between both depressive and anxiety symptoms and a history of tobacco and alcohol consumption. Specifically, increased nicotine dependence and greater cumulative tobacco use were linked to higher rates of depressive symptoms, whereas cumulative alcohol consumption was associated with increased risks of anxiety symptoms. Conclusion: The study affirms the feasibility of GAD‐7, PHQ‐9, and HADS as screening tools for depressive and anxiety symptoms in lung cancer patients. In the most comprehensive population surveys, mental health is only broadly captured through questionnaires asking about "mentally unhealthy days" or feelings of "sadness." Further, population mental health estimates are predominantly consolidated to yearly estimates at the state level, which is considerably coarser than the best estimates of physical health. Through the large-scale analysis of social media, robust estimation of population mental health is feasible at finer resolutions. In this study, we created a pipeline that used ~1 billion Tweets from 2 million geo-located users to estimate mental health levels and changes for depression and anxiety, the two leading mental health conditions. Language-based mental health assessments (LBMHAs) had substantially higher levels of reliability across space and time than available survey measures. This work presents reliable assessments of depression and anxiety down to the county-weeks level. Where surveys were available, we found moderate to strong associations between the LBMHAs and survey scores for multiple levels of granularity, from the national level down to weekly county measurements (fixed effects β = 0.34 to 1.82; p < 0.001). LBMHAs demonstrated temporal validity, showing clear absolute increases after a list of major societal events (+23% absolute change for depression assessments). LBMHAs showed improved external validity, evidenced by stronger correlations with measures of health and socioeconomic status than population surveys. This study shows that the careful aggregation of social media data yields spatiotemporal estimates of population mental health that exceed the granularity achievable by existing population surveys, and does so with generally greater reliability and validity. Using network analysis, we compared the BDI-II symptom groupings (i.e., communities), the ability of individual symptoms to associate with the others (i.e., centrality), the global strength of these associations, and the bridge symptoms that connect the communities in a sample of 279 depression patients (Mage = 49.9, SDage = 11.2) and in a non-clinical sample of 327 students (BDI-II score less than 19, Mage = 21.05, SDage = 1.82). The network of patients showed higher density, three communities (i.e., cognitive, affective-vegetative, and anhedonia-low energy), with sadness as the central and the strongest bridge symptom. The network of students was less consolidated, had unstable, and uninterpretable communities, with worthlessness as the central symptom, which was the strongest bridge among the communities. This study suggests some qualitative differences between depression symptoms in clinical and non-clinical populations, which manifest in their different places in networks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Anxiety and depressive disorders typically emerge in adolescence and can be chronic and disabling if not identified and treated early. School-based universal mental health screening may identify young people in need of mental health support and facilitate access to treatment. However, few studies have assessed the potential harms of this approach. This paper examines some of the potential mental health-related harms associated with the universal screening of anxiety and depression administered in Australian secondary schools. Methods: A total of 1802 adolescent students from 22 secondary schools in New South Wales, Australia, were cluster randomised (at the school level) to receive either an intensive screening procedure (intervention) or a light touch screening procedure (control). Participants in the intensive screening condition received supervised self-report web-based screening questionnaires for anxiety, depression and suicidality with the follow-up care matched to their symptom severity. Participants in the light touch condition received unsupervised web-based screening for anxiety and depression only, followed by generalised advice on help-seeking. No other care was provided in this condition. Study outcomes included the increased risk of anxiety, depression, psychological distress, decreased risk of help-seeking, increased risk of mental health stigma, determined from measures assessed at baseline, 6 weeks post-baseline, and 12 weeks post-baseline. Differences between groups were analysed using mixed effect models. Results: Participants in the intensive screening group were not adversely affected when compared to the light touch screening condition across a range of potential harms. Rather, participants in the intensive screening group were found to have a decreased risk of inhibited help-seeking behaviour compared to the light touch screening condition. Conclusions: The intensive screening procedure did not appear to adversely impact adolescents' mental health relative to the light touch procedure. Future studies should examine other school-based approaches that may be more effective and efficient than universal screening for reducing mental health burden among students. Significance: Early diagnosis of depression is crucial for effective treatment. Our study utilizes functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and machine learning to accurately classify mild and severe depression, providing an objective auxiliary diagnostic tool for mental health workers. Aim: Develop prediction models to distinguish between severe and mild depression using fNIRS data. Approach: We collected the fNIRS data from 140 subjects and applied a complete ensemble empirical mode decomposition with an adaptive noise-wavelet threshold combined denoising method (CEEMDAN-WPT) to remove noise during the verbal fluency task. The temporal features (TF) and correlation features (CF) from 18 prefrontal lobe channels of subjects were extracted as predictors. Using recursive feature elimination with cross-validation, we identified optimal TF or CF and examined their role in distinguishing between severe and mild depression. Machine learning algorithms were used for classification. Results: The combination of TF and CF as inputs for the prediction model yielded higher classification accuracy than using either TF or CF alone. Among the prediction models, the SVM-based model demonstrates excellent performance in nested cross-validation, achieving an accuracy rate of 92.8%. Background: Depression is a serious public health concern due to its prevalence and associated discomfort, dysfunction, morbidity, and economic impact. Depression is more prevalent in women than in males. There is a need to investigate the course of depressive disorders in India to identify the necessity and duration of ongoing treatment. Studies should also assess cost‑effective treatment strategies that can be easily implemented in primary care settings to successfully treat depression. Methods: This study aimed to estimate the Serum L-Acetyl Carnitine (LAC) levels in depressive episodes, mainly to find a correlation between the levels and depression and also to correlate the values to the severity of depression with a depression rating scale like Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS). LAC levels were estimated using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Results: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 60 individuals after obtaining their informed consent. This included 30 cases of diagnosed depression and 30 age and sex-matched normal controls. The diagnosed depressive episodes were rated in MADRS, and a score was assigned based on the same. The results were tabulated and statistically analyzed. The mean age of the case group was 41.37 ± 11.32 and control group was 41.50 ± 14.37. The incidence of depressive symptoms was higher in females (53%) than males(47%). The incidence of depressive symptoms was higher in the 41–50-year age group than in any other group. The acetyl carnitine-LAC levels were significantly decreased in patients with depressive episodes (950.7 ± 902.7) compared to the control (1799.6 ± 67.1), respectively. The Pearson’s correlation shows there is a strong negative correlation between the MADRS score and the levels of acetylcarnitine in the cases which was statistically significant, P < 0.001. Conclusions: LAC may have an important role in the pathophysiology of depression by its epigenetic action on metabotropic glutamate receptors and the decrease in the brain tissue may induce depressive symptoms, and consequently, their supplementation causes a rapid antidepressant effect. Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) pose significant burdens on individuals and society, necessitating accurate prediction methods. Machine learning (ML) algorithms utilizing electronic health records and survey data offer promising tools for forecasting these conditions. However, potential bias and inaccuracies inherent in subjective survey responses can undermine the precision of such predictions. This research investigates the reliability of five prominent ML algorithms—a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Random Forest, XGBoost, Logistic Regression, and Naive Bayes—in predicting MDD and GAD. A dataset rich in biomedical, demographic, and self-reported survey information is used to assess the algorithms' performance under different levels of subjective response inaccuracies. These inaccuracies simulate scenarios with potential memory recall bias and subjective interpretations. While all algorithms demonstrate commendable accuracy with high-quality survey data, their performance diverges significantly when encountering erroneous or biased responses. Notably, the CNN exhibits superior resilience in this context, maintaining performance and even achieving enhanced accuracy, Cohen's kappa score, and positive precision for both MDD and GAD. This highlights the CNN's superior ability to handle data unreliability, making it a potentially advantageous choice for predicting mental health conditions based on self-reported data. These findings underscore the critical importance of algorithmic resilience in mental health prediction, particularly when relying on subjective data. They emphasize the need for careful algorithm selection in such contexts, with the CNN emerging as a promising candidate due to its robustness and improved performance under data uncertainties. Background: Depression is a public health problem and common amongst adolescents. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is widely used to treat adolescent depression but existing research does not provide clear conclusions regarding the relative effectiveness of different delivery modalities. Objectives: The primary aim is to estimate the relative efficacy of different modes of CBT delivery compared with each other and control conditions for reducing depressive symptoms in adolescents. The secondary aim is to compare the different modes of delivery with regard to intervention completion/attrition (a proxy for intervention acceptability). Search Methods: The Cochrane Depression, Anxiety and Neurosis Clinical Trials Register was searched in April 2020. MEDLINE, PsycInfo, EMBASE, four other electronic databases, the CENTRAL trial registry, Google Scholar and Google were searched in November 2020, together with reference checking, citation searching and hand‐searching of two databases. Selection Criteria: Randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of CBT interventions (irrespective of delivery mode) to reduce symptoms of depression in young people aged 10–19 years with clinically relevant symptoms or diagnosis of depression were included. Data Collection and Analysis: Screening and data extraction were completed by two authors independently, with discrepancies addressed by a third author. CBT interventions were categorised as follows: group CBT, individual CBT, remote CBT, guided self‐help, and unguided self‐help. Effect on depressive symptom score was estimated across validated self‐report measures using Hedges' g standardised mean difference. Acceptability was estimated based on loss to follow‐up as an odds ratio. Treatment rankings were developed using the surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA). Pairwise meta‐analyses were conducted using random effects models where there were two or more head‐to‐head trials. Network analyses were conducted using random effects models. Main Results: Sixty‐eight studies were included in the review. The mean age of participants ranged from 10 to 19.5 years, and on average 60% of participants were female. The majority of studies were conducted in schools (28) or universities (6); other settings included primary care, clinical settings and the home. The number of CBT sessions ranged from 1 to 16, the frequency of delivery from once every 2 weeks to twice a week and the duration of each session from 20 min to 2 h. The risk of bias was low across all domains for 23 studies, 24 studies had some concerns and the remaining 21 were assessed to be at high risk of bias. Sixty‐two RCTs (representing 6435 participants) were included in the pairwise and network meta‐analyses for post‐intervention depressive symptom score at post‐intervention. All pre‐specified treatment and control categories were represented by at least one RCT. Although most CBT approaches, except remote CBT, demonstrated superiority over no intervention, no approaches performed clearly better than or equivalent to another. The highest and lowest ranking interventions were guided self‐help (SUCRA 83%) and unguided self‐help (SUCRA 51%), respectively (very low certainty in treatment ranking). Nineteen RCTs (3260 participants) were included in the pairwise and network meta‐analyses for 6 to 12 month follow‐up depressive symptom score. Neither guided self‐help nor remote CBT were evaluated in the RCTs for this time point. Effects were generally attenuated for 6‐ to 12‐month outcomes compared to posttest. No interventions demonstrated superiority to no intervention, although unguided self‐help and group CBT both demonstrated superiority compared to TAU. No CBT approach demonstrated clear superiority over another. The highest and lowest ranking approaches were unguided self‐help and individual CBT, respectively. Pairwise meta‐analytic findings were similar to those of the network meta‐analysis for all analyses. There may be age‐based subgroup effects on post‐intervention depressive symptoms. Using the no intervention control group as the reference, the magnitudes of effects appear to be larger for the oldest age categories compared to the other subgroups for each given comparison. However, they were generally less precise and formal testing only indicated a significant difference for group CBT. Findings were robust to pre‐specified sensitivity analyses separating out the type of placebo and excluding cluster‐RCTs, as well as an additional analysis excluding studies where we had imputed standard deviations. Authors' Conclusions: At posttreatment, all active treatments (group CBT, individual CBT, guided self‐help, and unguided self‐help) except for remote CBT were more effective than no treatment. Guided self‐help was the most highly ranked intervention but only evaluated in trials with the oldest adolescents (16–19 years). Moreover, the studies of guided self‐help vary in the type and amount of therapist support provided and longer‐term results are needed to determine whether effects persist. The magnitude of effects was generally attenuated for 6‐ to 12‐month outcomes. Although unguided self‐help was the lowest‐ranked active intervention at post‐intervention, it was the highest ranked at follow‐up. This suggests the need for further research into whether interventions with self‐directed elements enable young people to maintain effects by continuing or revisiting the intervention independently, and whether therapist support would improve long‐term outcomes. There was no clear evidence that any active treatments were more acceptable to participants than any others. The relative effectiveness of intervention delivery modes must be taken into account in the context of the needs and preferences of individual young people, particularly as the differences between effect sizes were relatively small. Background: Vascular depression (VaD) is a depressive disorder closely associated with cerebrovascular disease and vascular risk factors. It remains underestimated owing to challenging diagnostics and limited information regarding the pathophysiological mechanisms of VaD. The purpose of this study was to analyze the proteomic signatures and identify the potential biomarkers with diagnostic significance in VaD. Methods: Deep profiling of the serum proteome of 35 patients with VaD and 36 controls was performed using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Functional enrichment analysis of the quantified proteins was based on Gene Ontology (GO), Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway, and Reactome databases. Machine learning algorithms were used to screen candidate proteins and develop a protein-based model to effectively distinguish patients with VaD. Results: There were 29 up-regulated and 31 down-regulated proteins in the VaD group compared to the controls (|log2FC| = 0.26, p = 0.05). Enrichment pathways analyses showed that neurobiological processes related to synaptic vesicle cycle and axon guidance may be dysregulated in VaD. Extrinsic component of synaptic vesicle membrane was the most enriched term in the cellular components (CC) terms. 19 candidate proteins were filtered for further modeling. A nomogram was developed with the combination of HECT domain E3 ubiquitin protein ligase 3 (HECTD3), Nidogen-2 (NID2), FTO alpha-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase (FTO), Golgi membrane protein 1 (GOLM1), and N-acetylneuraminate lyase (NPL), which could be used to predict VaD risk with favorable efficacy. Background: The co‐occurrence of depression among tuberculosis (TB) patients is a critical issue, contributing to poor treatment outcomes, prolonged hospitalisations and increased healthcare expenses. Objective: The objective of this study was to assess the feasibility of delivering a co‐designed depression care pathway within TB services in Pakistan. Design: Mixed‐method study. Setting and Participants: Routine depression screening for TB patients was conducted at three TB facilities in Peshawar, Pakistan, encompassing primary, secondary and tertiary care settings. All patients aged 18 or above (male and female) attending the three TB facilities between November 2021 and February 2022 were included in the study using the consecutive sampling technique. Results: A total of 301 people with confirmed TB, within the past 4 weeks, visited the three TB care facilities; 191/301 patients were screened for depression. Approximately 35% of the 191 TB patients screened positive for depression, with varying severity levels. Qualitative findings highlighted the acceptability of integrated depression care, emphasising the importance of open communication and empathetic attitudes. Barriers to integration include stigma, logistical challenges, patient noncompliance and cost burdens. Facilitators included the empathetic attitude of healthcare providers and the availability of mental health services within the same facility. Conclusion: There is a high burden of depression in patients with TB, highlighting the pressing need for mental health support in this population. Acceptability of integrated care was evident, with factors such as co‐located mental health services, training healthcare providers and provider empathetic attitudes playing a crucial role. Further research is required to evaluate the effectiveness of the integrated TB‐depression screening systems towards improved health outcomes, implementation, scalability and impact on the broader healthcare system. Patient and Public Contribution: To create a more inclusive and comprehensive TB and depression care pathway, we gathered input from both service providers and service users (TB patients, their carers). Enhancing screening practices and developing scalable diagnostic tools are imperative in response to the increasing prevalence of youth mental health challenges. Structured lay psychiatric interviews have emerged as one such promising tool. However, there remains limited research evaluating structured psychiatric interviews, specifically their characterization of internalizing disorders in treatment-seeking youth. This study evaluates the relationship between the Development and Well-Being Assessment (DAWBA), a structured psychiatric interview, and established measures of pediatric anxiety and depression, including the Screen for Child Anxiety Related Disorders (SCARED), the Pediatric Anxiety Rating Scale (PARS), and the Mood and Feelings Questionnaire (MFQ). The study comprised two independent clinical samples of treatment-seeking youth: sample one included 55 youth with anxiety and 29 healthy volunteers (HV), while sample two included 127 youth with Major Depressive Disorder and 73 HVs. We examined the association between the DAWBA band scores, indicating predicted risk for diagnosis, the SCARED and PARS (sample one), and the MFQ (sample two). An exploratory analysis was conducted in a subset of participants to test whether DAWBA band scores predicted the change in anxiety symptoms (SCARED, PARS) across a 12-week course of cognitive behavioral therapy. The results revealed that the DAWBA significantly predicted the SCARED, PARS and MFQ measures at baseline; however, it did not predict changes in anxiety symptoms across treatment. These findings suggest that the DAWBA may be a helpful screening tool for indexing anxiety and depression in treatment-seeking youth but is not especially predictive of longitudinal trajectories in symptomatology across psychotherapy. Objective: Theory of mind (ToM) denotes the ability to understand the mental state of others and perceive their unique beliefs and emotions. In this study, we compared ToM between individuals with major depressive disorder (MDD) and stimulant-induced depressive disorder (SIDD). Method: This cross-sectional, causal-comparative study included patients with MDD or SIDD admitted to Ostad Moharary Neuropsychiatric Hospital between January and June 2022. Each diagnosis was confirmed through a semi-structured interview conducted by a single attending psychiatrist according to the DSM-5 criteria. After consecutive sampling of 110 individuals, 51 patients completed the study in each group. Demographic characteristics were recorded, and the Persian version of the revised Reading the Mind in the Eyes Test (RMET) was used to evaluate ToM. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS v.25, employing the t-test, chi-squared test, linear regression, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA). Results: Our analysis included 102 subjects (65.7% male) with a mean age of 35.17 ± 7.54 years. The two groups were similar in age, gender, marital status, working status, occupation, economic class, and ethnicity (P > 0.05). The RMET scores were 12.94 ± 4.03 and 11.86 ± 3.15 in the MDD and SIDD groups, respectively (P = 0.135). Almost all patients had low RMET scores (< 22); only two individuals in the MDD group achieved normal scores (22-30). ANCOVA revealed no significant confounding effects between the independent variables. Furthermore, regression analysis revealed that the level of education had a significant linear relationship (β= 0.249) with the RMET score (P = 0.021). Background: This study explores family functioning and its associations with adolescent major depressive disorder (MDD), comparing its dynamics with healthy counterparts. Family functioning (cohesion, flexibility, communication, and satisfaction), maternal depressive symptoms, postpartum depression history, parental divorce, parental alcohol abuse, and the adolescents' cognitive flexibility, are examined. The research incorporates the perspectives of both adolescents and mothers. Methods: The sample includes 63 mother-teenager dyads in the clinical group and 43 in the control group. Instruments encompass the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES IV), Children's Depression Inventory (CDI-2), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II), The Brixton Spatial Anticipation Test, and structured interviews. Results: Families of adolescents with MDD exhibit lower flexibility, cohesion, communication, and overall satisfaction. Depressed adolescents display reduced cognitive flexibility. Discrepancies were observed between adolescents' and mothers' perspectives as associated with adolescents' MDD. Teenagers emphasized the severity of maternal depressive symptoms, while mothers highlighted the importance of family cohesion and flexibility. Conclusions: This study emphasizes a holistic strategy in addressing adolescent depression, including family-based assessment and therapy. The National Athletic Trainers' Association recommends including mental health screening measures as part of the preparticipation examination for all student-athletes (SAs). Despite this recommendation, most mental health screening tools have not been validated in the SA population. To validate and examine the clinical utility of 2 depression screening tools in the collegiate SA population. Cross-sectional mixed-methods study. Two Northeastern United States university athletics programs. A total of 881 (men = 426, 48.4%; women = 455, 51.6%; mean age = 19.7 ± 1.4 years) National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II collegiate SAs completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D); 290 SAs participated in a Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview. Depression symptoms were measured using 2 self-report depression screening tools, the PHQ-9 and CES-D, during the fall preparticipation examination. The SAs were selected using a random stratified sampling technique to participate in a Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview as the reference standard comparison for the receiver operating characteristic analysis. A cutoff score of 6 on the PHQ-9 corresponded to 78% sensitivity, 75% specificity, 17.3% positive predictive value, 98.1% negative predictive value (NPV), 3.2 positive likelihood ratio (+LR), and 0.3 negative likelihood ratio (−LR). A cutoff score of 15 on the CES-D corresponded to 83% sensitivity, 78% specificity, 19.7% positive predictive value, 98.6% NPV, 3.7 +LR, and 0.22 −LR. This was the first study to validate depression screening tools in the collegiate SA population. The results suggest cutoff scores on the PHQ-9 and CES-D in SA may need to be lower than those recommended for the general population and provide strong evidence for use as screeners to rule out depression. Referral and confirmatory testing should be implemented to confirm the presence of depression for SAs scoring at or above the cutoff thresholds. Given its brevity, inclusion of a suicidality or self-harm question and evidence of −LR and NPV strength, the PHQ-9 is a practical and effective screener for the SA population. Objective: A growing body of research stresses the effect of time perspective (TP) on the genesis and maintenance of psychological disorders. However, the variations in the TP configuration of individuals with different disorders have not yet been completely investigated. We aimed to compare the differences in TP among patients with three common psychiatric disorders. Method: We recruited 30 patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), 30 with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), and 30 with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Participants completed Zimbardo's Time Perspective Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, Maudsley Obsessive Compulsive Inventory, and Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 (SCID-5). The one-way MANOVA was utilized for the comparison of TP dimensions among the three disordered groups. Results: The results showed that TP was significantly affected in all three clinical groups. The effect of the disorder on time perspective was significant for Past Negative (PN) (F (2, 84) = 11.86, P < 0.01), Past Positive (PP) (F (2, 84) = 6.66, P < 0.01), Present Fatalistic (PF) (F (2, 84) = 7.08, P < 0.01) and Future (F) (F (2, 84) = 26.40, P < 0.01), but not for Present Hedonistic (PH). The findings revealed that the MDD group scored the highest on PN, with the GAD group scoring higher than the OCD group. The GAD and OCD groups reported higher PP than the MDD group. In addition, the MDD group scored higher than both the GAD and OCD groups on PF. Finally, the GAD patients reported higher scores than both the MDD and OCD patients on the F dimension, while the OCD patients scored higher than the MDD patients. Conclusion: Individuals with MDD tend to obtain higher scores in PN and PF time perspective, whereas those with GAD and OCD showed higher PP and F scores. These findings demonstrate the significance of examining TP in clinical patients and prompt further research into the association between TP and the disorders being studied. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized by motor and nonmotor symptoms. Neuropsychiatric symptoms include sleep disorders, psychosis, cognitive impairment, depression, and anxiety. Because this neuropsychiatric aspect remains unexplored in such patients, we examined depression and sleep pattern disturbances in such patients. Methodology: All patients with a confirmed PD diagnosis attending an outpatient clinic and a PD support group will participate in this study. After recording the drug name, mechanism of action, frequency and duration of treatment, and examining drug use patterns, patients were assessed on the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-D) and the Parkinson's Disease Sleep Scale (PDSS-D). (2) Assess for depression and disturbed sleep patterns. Pearson's correlation test was used for correlations between various variables. Results: Thirty-five patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria were enrolled in the study. The mean ± standard deviation age of the patients was 66.46 ± 9.21 years. A total of 6 single drugs and 4 fixed-dose combinations were prescribed in a span of a mean of 6.53 years. Levodopa + carbidopa (125 mg), followed by pramipexole, is the most prescribed drug among the study population. The mean score of the HAM-D Scale of 35 patients was 23.02. The maximum score was 52. The mean score of the PDSS-2 of 35 patients was 22.8 (out of 60) and there was a weak or moderate correlation between the different variables. Conclusion: Major part of the treatment plan in PD patients was levodopa + carbidopa (125 mg). Out of 35 patients, the majority of them were depressed and it could be one of the reasons for nocturnal disturbances based on PDSS-2 scoring. Background: In recognizing the need for a reliable and valid instrument to assess psychological distress among children and adolescents, the present study translated the newly developed Depression Anxiety Stress Scale for Youth (DASS-Y) into Chinese, while also comparing its psychometric properties with those of the well-established DASS-21 within a primary and middle school demographic. Methods: Utilizing a combination of convenience sampling and purposive sampling, a cohort comprising 1,507 primary and 1,131 middle school students was recruited. Rasch analysis, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used in the data analysis. Results: Significant differences were observed between the DASS-Y and the DASS-21, notably within the anxiety subscale. The proportions of individuals with clinical mood disorders identified by the two scales demonstrated a significant disparity. Both scales, following an adjustment of responses, exhibited satisfactory internal consistency and convergent validity, with the acceptance of a three-factor structure. Furthermore, the DASS-Y showed superior discriminant validity relative to the DASS-21, providing more compelling evidence regarding concurrent validity. Conclusion: Overall, the Chinese version of the DASS-Y demonstrated superior robustness to the DASS-21 in terms of psychometric properties. Objective: The objective of this study was to determine the incidence of depression as well the suicide rate in Mexico in the past years. Materials and Methods: Observational analysis through open access databases on cases of depression and mortality in Mexico between the years 2014-2021; the incidence and suicide rate were calculated along the 95% confidence interval by assuming a Poisson distribution. Results: The incidence of depression in Mexico has increased since 2014; the calculated incidence in the next years shows that this trend will continue. Females are more affected than men, while the age group most affected is people over 60 years of age. The Mexican state that registers more new cases is Durango. The suicide rate also shows an increasing trend in recent years. Conclusion: Depression is a growing health public problem. Background and Hypothesis Impairments in function (ie, the ability to independently accomplish daily tasks) have been established in psychotic disorders. Identifying factors that contribute to these deficits is essential to developing effective interventions. The current study had several goals: examine potential differential relationships across domains of neurocognition, assess whether reinforcement learning is related to function, identify if predictors of function are transdiagnostic, determine whether depression and positive symptoms contribute to function, and to explore whether the modality of assessment impacts observed relationships. Study Design Data from 274 participants were examined with schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (SZ; n = 195) and bipolar disorder (BD; n = 79). To reduce dimensionality, a PCA was completed on neurocognitive tasks which resulted in 3 components. These components and clinical interview data were used to investigate predictors of functional domains across measures of function (self- and informant-report SLOF and UPSA). Results Two components, working memory/processing speed/episodic memory (βs = 0.18–0.42), and negative/positive reinforcement learning (β = −0.04), predicted different functional domains. Predictors of function were largely transdiagnostic with two exceptions: reinforcement learning had a positive association with self-reported interpersonal relationships for SZ and a negative association for BD (β = 0.34), and the negative association between positive symptoms and self-reported social acceptability was stronger for BD than for SZ (β = 0.93). Depression robustly predicted self-reported but not informant-reported function, and anhedonia predicted all domains of informant-reported function. Conclusions These findings imply that reinforcement learning may differentially relate to function across disorders, traditional domains of neurocognition can be effective transdiagnostic targets for interventions, and positive symptoms and depression play a critical role in self-perceived functional impairments. Background. Depression is a common comorbidity in adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D). It is unclear if patterns of responses from questionnaires used to screen for depressive symptoms are influenced by the burden of living with T1D and/or the consequences of hyperglycemia. Based on this gap in the adolescent research, we sought to identify potential differences in depression screening response patterns between adolescents with and without T1D and relate response patterns with glycemic outcomes. Methods. Using a retrospective case–control design, we analyzed electronic health records for age, sex, and race-matched adolescents 13–18 years of age from a pediatric diabetes clinic (n = 477) and a pediatric primary care clinic (n = 477) in the United States. Adolescents in both settings were screened for depressive symptoms during the same time period using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). Results. Participant demographics for matched characteristics were: 53.5% male, 71.7% White, median age 13.0 (interquartile range = 13.0, 14.0). After controlling for type of insurance, adolescents with T1D were more likely to have higher total PHQ-9 scores (odds ratio (OR) = 1.51, 95% CI = 1.17, 1.98, p = 0.002) and higher somatic subscores (OR = 1.57, 95% CI = 1.20, 2.05, p = 0.001) compared to the primary care sample. The pattern of item endorsement greater than "not at all" indicated that adolescents with T1D were more likely to have higher values for somatic items such as "trouble falling asleep" and "feeling tired" than those in the primary care sample. Item-total correlations and Cronbach's α indicated that all items were contributing to the overall score in the same manner in each group. Conclusions. Symptom endorsement for sleep and fatigue were higher for adolescents with T1D and without T1D. Study results support the need for further examination of the origins of somatic symptoms in T1D and for an additional examination of the specificity of depression screening instruments used in routine pediatric diabetes care. Introduction: First episode and drug naive schizophrenia (SZ) patients comorbid with major depressive episode and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) comorbid with major depressive disorder (MDD) are common in clinical practice, overlapping symptomatology during first presentation of MDD, SZ and GAD challenged the diagnostic process. Materials and Methods: This study aimed to investigate the differentiation value of peripheral microRNA-26b expression in 52 patients of MDD, SZ, and GAD, respectively, and 52 controls. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used to further verify aberrant miRNAs of previous identified in MDD and investigate expression level of these peripheral miRNAs in SZ and GAD. Results: The expression levels of miR-26b and miR-4743 were significantly upregulated and of miR-4498, miR-4485, and miR-1972 had no significant difference. There were no significant differences of expression levels of miR-26b, miR-4498, miR-4485, and miR-1972 except miR-4743 between SZ patients and control group and of miR-26b, miR-1972, miR-4498, and miR-4485 between GAD group and the controls. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve of miR-26b in MDD patients showed that its sensitivity and specificity for diagnosis were 0.540 and 0.830, respectively, with the area under curve (AUC) being 0.728; the ROC of miR-26b for SZ and MDD differentiation showed that its sensitivity and specificity were 0.580 and 0.710, respectively, with AUC being 0.631; the ROC of miR-26b for GAD and MDD differentiation suggested that sensitivity and specificity were 0.560 and 0.750, respectively, with AUC being 0.637. Depression and Alzheimer's disease (AD) are frequent interacting diseases in the elderly with a negative impact on the quality of life of patients and caregivers. Late life depression may be regarded either as an early symptom of AD or a risk factor for AD, depending on the context. This review was focused on the latest developments in the fields of the neurobiological basis and treatment of depression in AD. We found that some plausible hypotheses are emerging to correlate with depression in AD, such as neuroinflammation and dysimmune regulation. It seems that depression is not related to amyloid deposition, but this issue is not completely resolved. The response to antidepressants is controversial according to the evidence from 10 small double blind randomized placebo controlled clinical trials with antidepressants in AD patients with depression: four with sertraline, one with three arms (sertraline, mirtazapine, placebo), one with fluoxetine, one with imipramine, one with clomipramine, one with escitalopram, and one with vortioxetine. The total number of treated patients completing the trials was 638. The main criterion of a positive response was a reduction in the scores of clinical scales for depression of at least 50%. The weighted OR (odds ratio) was calculated with the method of Mantel Haenszel: 1.29; 95% CI: 0.77--2.16. No significant differences were found compared with placebo. Antidepressants did not have a meaningful negative influence on cognition, which was measured with the mini mental state examination (MMSE) in 18 clinical trials. (1) Background: Migraine is associated with comorbidities that are common in the general rural pediatric population. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the differences in the occurrence of comorbidities between rural children and adolescents with and without migraine. (2) Methods: A cross-sectional, secondary data analysis using electronic medical records of 1296 patients (53.8% females, aged 12.4 ± 3.2) was completed. Mann–Whitney U test was used to detect the difference in the number of comorbidities between the two groups. Chi-square test was used to identify the differences in the number of comorbidities, which were classified as low (0–1 comorbidities), medium (2–3 comorbidities), and high (4 or plus comorbidities) degree of comorbidities. (3) Results: Significant differences were found between those children and adolescents with migraine vs. those without for depression (p < 0.0001), anxiety (p < 0.0001), and Ehlers–Danlos Syndrome (EDS; p = 0.0309). A marginally significant difference was found between those children and adolescents with migraine (47.2%; n = 306) vs. those without (42.1%; n = 273) for unhealthy weight (p = 0.0652). Approximately 40% of the migraineurs had 2–3 comorbidities, whereas 32% of the non-migraineurs had 2–3 comorbidities (p = 0.0003). (4) Conclusions: Findings demonstrate the importance of identifying comorbidities associated with rural pediatric migraine in order to develop effective treatment strategies that optimize patient outcomes. Objectives: Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in Indian settings is yet not very often used in palliative care with the Hindi-speaking population. The Hindi version of PHQ-9 is available but its cultural adaptation to the Hindi-speaking population in North India receiving palliative care services is required to be tested. PHQ-9 as a depression screening questionnaire may help to identify depression symptoms among patients with cancer. This study aimed to examine the cultural equivalence of PHQ-9 Hindi for use with patients with cancer receiving palliative care services in North India. Material and Methods: Based on the standard methodology of translation and adaptation of the scale, the following process was used: (i) Two focused group discussions with 17 experts working in a cancer palliative care setting, (ii) qualitative interviewing with 11 patients, and (iii) research team review. All interviews were audio recorded, transcribed, and item-wise content analysis was conducted. Results: A few difficult phrases in the original PHQ-9 were 'dilchaspi', 'avasadgrast', 'kam urja', 'nakaam, parivar ko neecha dhikhana and 'ashthir which were changed to Kam Mann Lagna, Mann Dukhi hona, kamjori, saksham nahi hain 'asafat, Parivar ko nirash karna' and 'bechain,' respectively. Two items, namely no. 6 and 8 were changed to shorten the length for appropriately conveying the meaning. Conclusion: Hindi language involves various dialects which change from region to region bringing variations in understanding the meaning of the words. It is recommended that culturally equivalent scales are used in practice and research. PHQ-9 is now culturally adapted for the Hindi-speaking population in North India. Psychogenic purpura is a rare but interesting psychosomatic condition where there are transient dermatohematological manifestations in response to antecedent psychological disturbances most commonly depression, whose pathophysiology is still an enigma. The objective of this case series is finding out the missing link between antecedent psychological disturbances and resultant purpura through psychoimmunologic exploration. In all four cases, patients were female, aged between third–fifth decade with depression being the common diagnosis, where transient painful bruising appeared only during antecedent stressful conditions. Immune-cytokine work-up in all the patients showed type 1/type 2 cytokine shift during bruises. With psychiatric treatment, there was not only improvement in depression and bruises, cytokine alterations were also normalized. Rise in pro-inflammatory cytokines with type 1/type 2 shift during stresses may cause these bruises by increasing the vascular permeability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the second-most prevalent mental health condition in Vietnam. This study aims to validate the Vietnamese versions of the self-reported and clinician-rated Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (QIDS-SR and QIDS-C, respectively) and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and to assess the correlations between the QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9. Methods: 506 participants with MDD (mean age, 46.3 years; 55.5% women) were assessed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5. The internal consistency, diagnostic efficiency, and concurrent validity of the Vietnamese versions of QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9 were determined using the Cronbach's alpha, receiver operating characteristic curve, and Pearson correlation coefficient, respectively. Results: The Vietnamese versions of QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9 demonstrated acceptable validity, with an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.901, 0.967, and 0.864, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity, respectively, were 87.8% and 77.8% for QIDS-SR and 97.6% and 86.2% for QIDS-C at the cut-off score of 6, and were 82.9% and 70.1% for PHQ-9 at the cut-off score of 4. Cronbach's alphas for QIDS-SR, QIDS-C, and PHQ-9 were 0.709, 0.813, and 0.745, respectively. The PHQ-9 highly correlated with the QIDS-SR (r = 0.77, p < 0.001) and the QIDS-C (r = 0.75, p < 0.001). Objectives: To assess the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between nut consumption and depression in two cohorts of older adults. Design, Setting, Participants and Measurements: The first cohort (Seniors-ENRICA-I or SE-I) included a representative sample of Spanish noninstitutionalized adults aged ≥65 years interviewed in 2010 and 2013. The second cohort (SE-II) included individuals from the Madrid region, Spain, aged ≥65 years interviewed in 2017 and in 2019. Nut consumption was estimated with a validated computer-based diet history. Depression was defined as self-reported physician-diagnosed depression or the use of antidepressants. Logistic regression models were adjusted for the main confounders. The DerSimonian and Laird random-effect method was used to meta-analyze the results from both studies. A participant-level pooled analysis was conducted to examine the robustness of our analyses. Results: The SE-I included 2278 individuals (233 prevalent cases) in the cross-sectional analysis and 1534 (108 incident cases) in the longitudinal analysis; the corresponding figures for SE-II were 2726 (407 prevalent cases) and 1566 (74 incident cases). In the meta-analysis of cross-sectional results from the two studies, compared to consuming <1 serving (30 g) of nuts/week, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for depression was 0.90 (0.64, 1.16) for consuming 1 to <3 servings/week and 0.92 (0.70, 1.13) for consuming ≥3 servings/week; the corresponding figures for the longitudinal results were 0.90 (0.41, 1.38) and 0.66 (0.35, 0.97). Conclusion: Nut consumption was associated with a lower risk of depression in a pooled longitudinal analysis using data from two cohorts of older adults. Background: The purine system represented by uric acid may be involved in the pathogenesis of bipolar disorder, This study intends to explore the association of serum uric acid levels with bipolar disorder in Chinese patients through meta-analysis. Methods: Electronic databases, including PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), searching from inception to December 2022. Randomized Controlled Trials that reported serum uric acid levels and bipolar disorder were included. Two investigators independently extracted data and RevMan5.4 and Stata14.2 were used for statistical analyses. Results: Twenty-eight studies with 4482 bipolar disorder, 1568 depression, 785 schizophrenia, and 2876 healthy control subjects were included in this meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis showed that serum uric acid levels in the bipolar disorder group were significantly higher than those in depression [SMD 0.53 (0.37, 0.70), p < 0.00001], schizophrenia [SMD 0.27 (0.05, 0.49), p = 0.02] and healthy control group [SMD 0.87 (0.67, 1.06), p < 0.00001]. Subgroup-analysis showed that in Chinese people with bipolar disorder, uric acid levels of the manic episode were higher than the depressed episode [SMD 0.31 (0.22, 0.41), p < 0.00001]. Conclusion: Our results indicated a strong association between serum uric acid levels and bipolar disorder in Chinese patients, but further studies about whether uric acid levels can be a biomarker for bipolar disorder still need to investigate. Background: Depression is one of the most common mental disorders worldwide. The German National Disease Management Guideline on Unipolar Depression (NDGM), (Nationale Versorgungsleitlinie, NVL), updated in 2022, contains recommendations on the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic depressive disorders. Methods: The update was based on the findings of a systematic review of the evidence (2013-2022) and was issued by a multidisciplinary panel after a formalized consensus process. Results: The structure of the guideline was fundamentally revised and is now based on the phases of depression and/or its treatment, as well as on the severity of the disease. There is newly added material with recommendations on Internet- and mobile-device based treatments, esketamine, repetitive magnetic stimulation, psychosocial therapies, rehabilitation, social participation, and complex forms of care. The guideline also emphasizes better coordination of all services in the care of patients with depression. This article covers the most important changes and additions among the 156 recommendations in the guideline. More information and accompanying materials are available at www.leitlinien.de/depression. Given the limitations of traditional approaches, wearable artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the technologies that have been exploited to detect or predict depression. The current review aimed at examining the performance of wearable AI in detecting and predicting depression. The search sources in this systematic review were 8 electronic databases. Study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment were carried out by two reviewers independently. The extracted results were synthesized narratively and statistically. Of the 1314 citations retrieved from the databases, 54 studies were included in this review. The pooled mean of the highest accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and root mean square error (RMSE) was 0.89, 0.87, 0.93, and 4.55, respectively. The pooled mean of lowest accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and RMSE was 0.70, 0.61, 0.73, and 3.76, respectively. Subgroup analyses revealed that there is a statistically significant difference in the highest accuracy, lowest accuracy, highest sensitivity, highest specificity, and lowest specificity between algorithms, and there is a statistically significant difference in the lowest sensitivity and lowest specificity between wearable devices. Wearable AI is a promising tool for depression detection and prediction although it is in its infancy and not ready for use in clinical practice. Until further research improve its performance, wearable AI should be used in conjunction with other methods for diagnosing and predicting depression. Further studies are needed to examine the performance of wearable AI based on a combination of wearable device data and neuroimaging data and to distinguish patients with depression from those with other diseases. Introduction: Care coordinators (CCs) are specialized healthcare providers and often the primary point of contact for patients with multiple medical and mental health comorbidities in integrated healthcare settings. Prior work shows CCs have lower comfort addressing mental health than physical health concerns. Digital mental health interventions can support CCs' management of patient mental health needs, but training gaps must be addressed prior to a digital mental health intervention's implementation. Methods: As part of a quality improvement initiative, a 1-hour training focused on the assessment and management of depression and suicide-related thoughts and behaviors was delivered to CCs within a large midwestern healthcare system's Division of Ambulatory Care Coordination. CCs completed online surveys prior to and following the training. Conclusion: Training resulted in increased comfort working with clinical populations, including patients who experience suicide-related thoughts and behaviors. Gains around screening for suicide risk were modest. Brief trainings for CCs can address training gaps, however, ongoing training and case consultation may also be indicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has had profound mental and behavioral health implications for the general U.S. population. However, little is known regarding outcomes for U.S. veterans, who represent a population with high rates of depression, stress, and e-cigarette use. One month prior to the pandemic-related closures (February 2020), 1230 OEF/OIF veterans (ages 18–40) completed an online baseline survey. Six months later, participants completed a follow-up survey (83% retention rate). Hierarchical negative binomial regressions were used to examine the relationship between baseline depression and past 30-day e-cigarette use at follow-up and whether baseline stress moderated this relationship. Veterans who screened positive for depression or who endorsed higher stress levels reported greater e-cigarette use at follow-up. Stress also moderated the relationship between depression and e-cigarette use, such that regardless of stress levels, a positive depression screen was associated with greater rates of later e-cigarette use. However, for those with a negative depression screen, higher stress levels were associated with greater e-cigarette use relative to lower stress levels. Veterans with pre-pandemic depression and stress may be at highest risk for e-cigarette use. Ongoing assessment and treatment for depression and promoting stress management skills for veterans in e-cigarette use prevention and intervention programs may be valuable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Post-stroke depression (PSD) is the most common emotional problem following a stroke, which requires early diagnosis to improve the prognosis. Gut microbiota plays important role in the pathological mechanisms of acute ischemic stroke and influences the outcome of patients. However, the relationship between PSD and gut microbiota remains unknown. Here, we explored whether the microbial signatures of gut microbiota in the patients with stroke could be an appropriate predictor of PSD. Methods: Fecal samples were collected from 232 acute ischemic stroke patients and determined by 16s rRNA sequencing. All patients then received 17-Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD-17) assessment 3 months after discharge, and were further divided into PSD group and non-PSD group. We analyzed the differences of gut microbiota between these groups. To identify gut microbial biomarkers, we then established microbial biomarker model. Results: Our results showed that the composition of gut microbiota in the PSD patients differed significantly from that in non-PSD patients. The genus Streptococcus, Akkermansia, and Barnesiella were significantly increased in PSD patients compared to non-PSD, while the genus Escherichia-Shigella, Butyricicoccus, and Holdemanella were significantly decreased. Correlation analyses displayed that Akkermansia, Barnesiella, and Pyramidobacter were positively correlated with HAMD score, while Holdemanella was negatively correlated with HAMD score. The optimal microbial markers were determined, and the combination achieved an area under the curve (AUC) value of 0.705 to distinguish PSD from non-PSD. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that PSD patients had distinct gut microbiota compared to non-PSD patients, and explore the potential of microbial markers, which might provide clinical decision-making in PSD. Mental health problems are one of the various ills that afflict the world's population. Early diagnosis and medical care are public health problems addressed from various perspectives. Among the mental illnesses that most afflict the population is depression; its early diagnosis is vitally important, as it can trigger more severe illnesses, such as suicidal ideation. Due to the lack of homogeneity in current diagnostic tools, the community has focused on using AI tools for opportune diagnosis. Unfortunately, there is a lack of data that allows the use of IA tools for the Spanish language. Our work has a cross-lingual scheme to address this issue, allowing us to identify Spanish and English texts. The experiments demonstrated the methodology's effectiveness with an F1-score of 0.95. With this methodology, we propose a method to solve a classification problem for depression tweets (or short texts) by reusing English language databases with insufficient data to generate a classification model, such as in the Spanish language. We also validated the information obtained with public data to analyze the behavior of depression in Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our results show that the use of these methodologies can serve as support, not only in the diagnosis of depression, but also in the construction of different language databases that allow the creation of more efficient diagnostic tools. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique, amplified threat to those living with a cancer diagnosis, but personal factors may play a role in how this affects well-being. This cross-sectional study (1) describes the impacts of COVID-19 on cancer patients' lives, and (2) explores the extent to which specific impacts of COVID-19 and noted protective factors, hope and resilience, predict two crucial patient-reported outcomes, depression and anxiety, after controlling for relevant sociodemographic and clinical factors. Methods: 520 cancer patients and survivors in the U.S. completed an online survey during the first year of the pandemic and answered questions about COVID-19 areas of impact, psychological well-being, hope, and resilience. Hierarchical regression analyses were used to analyze the unique impact of each group of variables on patient-reported levels of depression and anxiety during the pandemic. Results: Participants strongly endorsed COVID-19 impact across several areas of life, especially social activity, well-being, and ability to acquire basic essentials. Regression models explained a substantial amount of variance in patient-reported depression (R2 =.50, p <.001) and anxiety (R2 =.44, p <.001), revealing COVID-19 financial impact as a significant predictor of depression (β = 0.07), and COVID-19 family impact as a significant predictor of anxiety (β = 0.14), even after controlling for the effects of relevant sociodemographic and clinical variables. Additionally, resilience and hope were the largest predictors of both depression (β = − 0.19 and − 0.37, respectively) and anxiety (β = − 0.18 and − 0.29), suggesting that they account for unique variance in patient-reported mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic and might serve as important protective factors. Conclusions: The current results add to existing literature documenting the significant effect of COVID-19 on those living with cancer. COVID-19 impact, including financial and family well-being, as well as positive psychological constructs, hope and resilience, play a crucial role in levels of patient-reported depression and anxiety during the pandemic. As COVID-19 continues to evolve, health care providers should routinely assess psychological well-being and needs related to COVID-19 financial and family impact in an effort to appropriately align individuals with resources and support, and consider how hope and resilience can be fostered to serve as psychological buffers during this time. Objectives: This study aims to investigate skeletal muscle architecture and strength in patients with primary Sjögren syndrome (pSS). Patients and methods: Between July 01, 2017 and November 30, 2017, 19 pSS patients (19 females; mean age: 54.1±6.6 years; range, 42 to 62 years) and 19 age-, body mass index-, and sex-matched healthy controls (19 females; mean age: 53.2±6.7 years; range 42 to 61 years) were included. Sjögren symptoms were assessed with the European Alliance of Associations for Rheumatology (EULAR) Sjögren’s Syndrome Patient Reported Index (ESSPRI). Muscle thickness, pennation angle, and fascicle length were measured at quadriceps femoralis, gastrocnemius and soleus muscles. Isokinetic muscle strength tests were performed at 60 and 180°/sec for knee and at 30 and 120°/sec for ankle. Anxiety and depression evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), fatigue with Multidimensional Assessment of Fatigue scale (MAF), and functionality with Health Assessment Questionnaire (HAQ). Results: In the pSS group, the mean ESSPRI was 7.70±1.17. The mean scores of depression (10.05±3.09 vs. 4.47±2.29; p<0.0001), anxiety (8.26±4.28 vs. 3.79±2.42; p<0.0001), functionality (0.94±0.78 vs. 0.22±0.26; p<0.0001), and fatigue (37.69±5.47 vs. 17.69±5.26; p<0.0001) were significantly higher in patients with pSS. Only, the pennation angle of vastus medialis in dominant leg was significantly greater in healthy controls (p=0.049). Peak torques/body weight of knee and ankle muscles were found to be similar. Conclusion: Excluding a minor decrease of the pennation angle at vastus medialis, muscle structure of lower extremity of pSS patients were similar to healthy controls. In addition, isokinetic muscle strength did not significantly differ in patients with pSS compared to healthy controls.
