Background: Our aim was to explore relevance of the proportion between neoplastic cell component and tumor-associated stroma in order to assess its association with confirmed aggressive phenotypes of right/left colon and rectum cancers in a large series of patients. Methods: The quantification of stroma component was performed in patients diagnosed with colorectal adenocarcinoma who underwent surgical resection. The analyzed variables were age, gender, anatomical/pathological features, and tumor-stroma proportion. Tumor-stroma proportion was estimated based on slides used in routine pathology for determination of T status and was described as low, with a stromal percentage ≤50% or high, with a stromal percentage >50%. The tumor-stroma proportion was estimated by two observers, and the inter-observer agreement was assessed. Results: The sample included 390 colorectal adenocarcinoma patients. Todos os sistemas de avaliação de desempenho em laboratórios de citopatologia exigem um programa de controle interno da qualidade estabelecido e executado. O presente estudo tem por objetivo identificar os resultados do programa e o desempenho dos citotécnicos. Para tanto foram revistos os laudos, emitidos pelos citotécnicos e pelos citopatologistas, de 48.355 exames citopatológicos ginecológicos realizados durante 21 meses. Foram identificados 2.299 casos anômalos encaminhados ao citopatologista, e confirmados 1.132; 2.973 casos de alto risco foram detectados e 998 anômalos identificados. A revisão de 10% dos negativos representou 3.180 casos, com identificação de 77 anômalos. Os anômalos totais detectados foram: 1.176 Ascus, 60 Agus, 819 Nic I/HPV, 85 Nic II, 33 Nic III, 11 carcinomas escamosos, 17 adenocarcinomas, cinco Vain I e um Vain III. Os Ascus/Agus foram 56%, e as outras lesões representaram 44%. Os 4,56% de anômalos detectados concordam com os valores propostos por Cardin (3% a 5%), pelo sistema Bethesda (4% a 6%) e por Kurman et al. (5%) (4, 6, 7). O citopatologista revisou 17,48% dos casos (n = 8.452). Dos 77 (0,16% do total) anômalos identificados no reescrutínio, 59 (0,12%) foram Ascus, seis (0,01%) Agus e 12 (0,02%) Nic I. O presente estudo mostra resultados do controle interno da qualidade desenvolvido em laboratório particular e fornece dados relevantes para o planejamento de um programa de prevenção do câncer uterocervical.

Dengue fever and chikungunya are viral diseases that have spread rapidly throughout the world in recent decades. The occurrence of complications is well known, including prerenal acute kidney injury (AKI), which is usually thought to be caused by dehydration and fluid loss. Thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) is an uncommon aggravation of dengue fever and chikungunya, with only a few cases described in the medical literature. The aim of this study is to present 3 cases of TMA associated with arboviral infection. Three patients with clinical history, laboratory test, and kidney biopsy results compatible with TMA were selected for the study, 2 of whom had a serological diagnosis of dengue fever and 1 of chikungunya. The 3 patients were followed up at the Federal University of Maranhão Hospital's Nephrology Service in 2018. A targeted gene panel sequencing (TGPS) plus multiple to atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) was performed in 2 of the patients and revealed in the patient 1 a heterozygous pathogenic variant in the gene THBD, as well as heterozygous deletions in CFH, CFHR1, and CFHR3. In the patient 2, there were heterozygous pathogenic variant in the genes CFI and CFB, in addition to heterozygous deletions in the genes CFHR1 and CFHR3. Both received treatment with eculizumab and undergone recovery of renal function. The third patient had TMA not classified as either aHUS or thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP); he abandoned the treatment and returned to the service after 2 years for a dialysis emergency. Kidney involvement appears to be frequent in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Despite this, information concerning renal involvement in COVID-19 is still scarce. Several mechanisms appear to be involved in the complex relationship between the virus and the kidney. Also, different morphological patterns have been described in the kidneys of patients with COVID-19. For some authors, however, this association may be just a coincidence. To investigate this issue, we propose assessing renal morphology associated with COVID-19 at the renal pathology reference center of federal university hospitals in Brazil. Data will come from a consortium involving 17 federal university hospitals belonging to Empresa Brasileira de Serviços Hospitalares (EBSERH) network, as well as some state hospitals and an autopsy center. All biopsies will be sent to the referral center for renal pathology of the EBSERH network. The data will include patients who had coronavirus disease, both alive and deceased, with or without pre-existing kidney disease. Kidney biopsies will be analyzed by light, fluorescence, and electron microscopy. Furthermore, immunohistochemical (IHC) staining for various inflammatory cells (i.e., cells expressing CD3, CD20, CD4, CD8, CD138, CD68, and CD57) as well as angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) will be performed on paraffinized tissue sections. In addition to ultrastructural assays, in situ hybridization (ISH), IHC and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) will be used to detect Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in renal tissue. For the patients diagnosed with Collapsing Glomerulopathy, peripheral blood will be collected for apolipoprotein L-1 (APOL1) genotyping. For patients with thrombotic microangiopathy, thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13), antiphospholipid, and complement panel will be performed. The setting of this study is Brazil, which is second behind the United States in highest confirmed cases and deaths. Objective: To evaluate the association between calcium intake and serum vitamin D levels and childhood obesity by an integrative review., Data Source: The research was conducted in the databases PubMed/medLine, Science Direct and SciELO with 2001 to 2014 publications. We used the combined terms in English: "children" and "calcium" or "children" and "vitamin D" associated with the descriptors: "obesity", "adiposity" or "body fat" for all bases. Cross-sectional and cohort studies, as well as clinical trials, were included. Review articles or those that that have not addressed the association of interest were excluded., Data Synthesis: Eight articles were part of this review, five of which were related to calcium and three to vitamin D. Most studies had a longitudinal design. The analyzed studies found an association between calcium intake and obesity, especially when age and sex were considered. Inverse relationship between serum vitamin D and measures of adiposity in children has been observed and this association was influenced by the sex of the patient and by the seasons of the year., Conclusions: The studies reviewed showed an association between calcium and vitamin D with childhood obesity.
