X-ray polarimetry promises to give qualitatively new information about high-energy astrophysical sources, such as binary black hole systems, micro-quasars, active galactic nuclei, neutron stars, and gamma-ray bursts. We designed, built and tested a X-ray polarimeter, X-Calibur, to be used in the focal plane of the balloon-borne InFOCuS grazing incidence X-ray telescope. X-Calibur combines a low-Z scatterer with a CZT detector assembly to measure the polarization of 20-80keV X-rays making use of the fact that polarized photons scatter preferentially perpendicular to the electric field orientation. X-Calibur achieves a high detection efficiency of ~80%. The X-Calibur detector assembly is completed, tested, and fully calibrated. The response to a polarized X-ray beam was measured successfully at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source. This paper describes the design, calibration and performance of the X-Calibur polarimeter. AMS instrument aboard the International Space Station is a high precision instrument capable of collecting large statistics on cosmic ray intensities and as such has started making highly significant contributions to Astroparticle Physics. In order to fully benefit from these observations, the positron fraction in cosmic rays in their recent publication and other results that will follow, the models to interpret the results have to be equally good. We enlarge on this remark by citing examples from the currently popular model and one of our own fitting the observed spectra of positrons, extending it to higher energies. We also show what one might expect to observe from a mono-energetic source, such as the annihilation of dark matter.

Cosmic rays are the highest energy particles available for our study and as such serve as excellent probes of the effects of Lorentz Invariance Violations, which are expected to increase with energy. This general paradigm is investigated in this paper by studying the effects of such violations within the Coleman-Glashow model in which each particle species may have its own maximum attainable velocity, even exceeding that of light \textit{in vacuo}. The particular focus here is that the muon neutrino may have the maximum speed exceeding that of light. We show that such an assumption leads to the elongation of the decay lifetime of the pion that increases with energy over and above the time dilation effects. We provide a transparent analytical derivation of the spectral intensities of muon neutrinos and muons generated in the Earth's atmosphere by cosmic rays. In this derivation we not only account for elongation of the pion lifetime, but also for the loss of energy by the neutrinos by radiation of the electron-positron pairs through the Cohen-Glashow process, during their propagation. We then compare the theoretical spectra with observations of neutrinos and muons from large instruments like IceCube and BUST to set a limit of $\sim10^{-13}$ on the fractional excess speed of neutrinos over that of light. We also show that the ratio of the spectral intensities of downward and upward moving neutrinos at various angles constitute a diagnostic exclusively for the Cohen-Glashow process, which may be searched for in the IceCube data set. In this paper we describe an approach to Casimir Force problems that is ultimately generalizable to all fields, boundary conditions, and cavity geometries. This approach utilizes locally defined reflection amplitudes to express the energy per unit area of any Casimir interaction. Violation of Lorentz invariance (VLI) has been suggested as an explanation of the superluminal velocities of muon neutrinos reported by OPERA. In this note we show that the amount of VLI required to explain this result poses severe difficulties with the kinematics of the pion decay, extending its lifetime and reducing the momentum carried away by the neutrinos. We show that the OPERA experiment limits $\alpha = (v_\nu - c)/c < 4 \times 10^{-6}$. We then take recourse to cosmic ray data on the spectrum of muons and neutrinos generated in the earth's atmosphere to provide a stronger bound on VLI: $(v-c)/c < 10^{-12}$., Comment: 4 pages

The positron fraction observed by PAMELA and other experiments up to ~ 100 GeV is analyzed in terms of models of cosmic-ray propagation. It is shown that generically we expect the positron fraction to reach ~ 0.6 at energies of several TeV, and its energy dependence bears an intimate but subtle connection with that of the boron to carbon ratio in cosmic rays. The observed positron fraction can be fitted in a model that assumes a significant fraction of the boron below ~ 10 GeV is generated through spallation of cosmic-ray nuclei in a cocoonlike region surrounding the sources, and the positrons of energy higher than a few GeV are almost exclusively generated through cosmic-ray interactions in the general interstellar medium. Recently, the PAMELA, FERMI, HESS, and ATIC instruments have discovered interesting spectral features in the positron to total electron ratio and in the total electronic component of cosmic rays at high energy. These observations are studied with analytical models for the propagation of cosmic rays emanating from a discrete set of sources or from a smooth distribution of sources extending over the Galaxy. The contrast between the theoretically expected spectra from these two source distributions is seen to play a crucial role in the interpretation of the recent findings. It is shown that the positron to electron ratio, observed by PAMELA, may be fit over the entire energy range in the nested leaky-box model for cosmic ray propagation and that the ratio is expected to reach an asymptotic value of $\sim0.6$ at high energies in all conventional models of cosmic ray propagation. We also derive the spectral shape of the electrons and positrons expected from the annihilation of dark matter in the Galaxy and show that the spectral shape of the peak will provide important information, not only regarding the mass of the dark matter particles, but also regarding their spatial distribution. The spectrum of secondary positrons and electrons, calculated with the nested leaky-box model, is subtracted from the spectrum of the electronic component to determine the spectrum of primary electrons emerging from the cosmic ray sources. This spectrum is analyzed in terms of contributions from a set of discrete sources sprinkled across the Galactic volume. The observations of the total electronic component and the positron fraction in cosmic rays by the FERMI, HESS, ATIC, and PAMELA instruments are studied with analytical propagation models, both for a set of discrete sources and for a spatially smooth source distribution. The positron fraction over the entire energy range of ~1-100 GeV is shown to fit with the nested leaky box model. The recent observations of the positron fraction in cosmic rays by PAMELA indicate that the fraction of positrons to the total electronic component in cosmic rays initially decreases in the energy region 1-10 GeV and increases thereafter. In this paper, we show that it is natural to expect such an increase of the positron fraction within the context of cosmic ray propagation models. It is shown that this ratio should reach an asymptotic value of ~0.6 at very high energies. The specific measurements by PAMELA help us to distinguish amongst various models for cosmic ray propagation, and in particular, they support the nested leaky box model. Based on the observed paucity of the dwarf spheroidal (dSph) satellites of the Milky Way at small Galactocentric distances, we put forward the hypothesis that subsequent to the formation of the Milky Way and its satellites, those dSphs that had orbits with small perigalacticons were tidally disrupted, leaving behind a population that now has a relatively larger value of its average perigalacticon to apogalacticon ratio and consequently a larger value of its r.m.s. transverse to radial velocities ratio compared to their values at the time of formation of the dSphs. We analyze the implications of this hypothesis for the phase space distribution of the dSphs and that of the dark matter (DM) halo of the Galaxy within the context of a self-consistent model in which the functional form of the phase space distribution of DM particles follows the King model i.e. the `lowered isothermal' distribution and the potential of the Galaxy is determined self-consistently by including the gravitational cross-coupling between visible matter and DM particles. This analysis, coupled with virial arguments, yields an estimate of $\gsim$ 270 km/s for the circular velocity of any test object at galactocentric distances of $\sim$ 100 kpc, the typical distances of the dSphs. The corresponding self-consistent values of the relevant DM halo model parameters, namely, the local (i.e., the solar neighbourhood) values of the DM density and velocity dispersion in the King model and its truncation radius, are estimated to be $\sim$ 0.3 GeV/cm^3, >350 km/s and $\gsim$ 150 kpc, respectively. We present optical, near-infrared, and X-ray observations of the optical afterglow (OA) of the X-ray rich, long-duration gamma-ray burst GRB 011211. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data obtained 14, 26, 32, and 59 days after the burst, show the host galaxy to have a morphology that is fairly typical of blue galaxies at high redshift. We measure its magnitude to be R = 24.95 +/- 0.11. We detect a break in the OA R-band light curve which is naturally accounted for by a collimated outflow geometry. By fitting a broken power-law to the data we find a best fit with a break 1.56 +/- 0.02 days after the burst, a pre-break slope of alpha_1 = -0.95 +/- 0.02, and a post-break slope of alpha_2 = -2.11 +/- 0.07. The UV-optical spectral energy distribution (SED) around 14 hours after the burst is best fit with a power-law with index beta = -0.56 +/- 0.19 reddened by an SMC-like extinction law with a modest A_V = 0.08 +/- 0.08 mag. By comparison, from the XMM-Newton X-ray data at around the same time, we find a decay index of alpha_X = -1.62 +/- 0.36 and a spectral index of beta_X = -1.21 +0.10/-0.15. Interpolating between the UV-optical and X-ray implies that the cooling frequency is located close to ~10^16 Hz in the observer frame at the time of the observations. We argue, using the various temporal and spectral indices above, that the most likely afterglow model is that of a jet expanding into an external environment that has a constant mean density rather than a wind-fed density structure. Recently an Indian Astronomical Observatory has been set up at Hanle (32$^\circ$ 46$^\prime$ 46$^{\prime\prime}$ N, 78$^\circ$ 57$^\prime$ 51$^{\prime\prime}$ E, 4515m amsl) situated in the high altitude cold desert in the Himalayas. The Observatory has 2-m aperture optical-infrared telescope, recently built by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics. We have carried out systematic simulations for this observation level to study the nature of \v{C}erenkov light pool generated by gamma ray and proton primaries incident vertically at the top of the atmosphere. The differences in the shape of the lateral distributions of \v{C}erenkov light with respect to that at lower altitudes is striking. This arises primarily due to the proximity of the shower maximum to the observation site. The limited lateral spread of the \v{C}erenkov light pool and near 90% atmospheric transmission at this high altitude location makes it an ideal site for a gamma ray observatory. This results in a decrease in the gamma ray energy threshold by a factor of 2.9 compared to that at sea-level. Several parameters based on density and timing information of \v{C}erenkov photons, including local and medium range photon density fluctuations as well as photon arrival time jitter could be efficiently used to discriminate gamma rays from more abundant cosmic rays at tens of GeV energies., Comment: 4 pages, 2 Postscript figures; uses icrc.cls

The optical afterglow of GRB 010222 was observed using the recently installed 2-m telescope at the Indian Astronomical Observatory, Hanle, and the telescopes at the Vainu Bappu Observatory, Kavalur, beginning ~ 0.6 day after the detection of the event. The results based on these photometric observations combined with others reported in the literature are presented in this paper. The R band light curve shows an initial decline of intensities proportional to t^{-0.542} which steepens, after 10.3 hours, to t^{-1.263}. Following the model of collimated outflow, the early break in the light curve implies a very narrow beam angle (~ 2-3 deg). The two decay rates are consistent with the standard jet model in a uniform density ambient medium, but require a hard spectrum of electron power density with p ~ 1.5. The R band light between 14 and 17 hours since outburst departs from the power law fit by 0.1 mag and shows some evidence for fluctuations over timescales of an hour in the observer's frame. Such deviations are expected due to density inhomogeneities if the ambient medium is similar to the local interstellar medium. We report multiband observations of the Optical Transient (OT) associated with GRB000301c carried out between 2--4 March 2000 using the 2.34-m Vainu Bappu Telescope (VBT) at Kavalur, India. When combined with other reported data, the initial decline in the R-band magnitude with log ($t-t_0$), the time since the burst is fit with a slope $\alpha_{1}$ = -0.70 $\pm$ 0.07 which steepens after about 6.0 days to a slope of $\alpha_{2}$ = -2.44 $\pm$ 0.29. This change in slope does not occur smoothly but there is an indication for a bimodal distribution. It is suggested that modern techniques of radio ranging when applied to study the motion of the Moon, can improve the accuracy of tests of relativistic gravitation obtained with currently operating laser ranging techniques. Recently Coleman and Glashow [1] have developed a model which allows the introduction of a small violation of Lorentz invariance. Observational signatures arise because this interaction also violates flavor conservation and allows the radiative decay of the muon, $\mu \to e + \gamma$, whose branching ratio increases as b $\gamma^4$ where $\gamma$ is the Lorentz factor of the muon with respect to the reference frame in which the dipole anisotropy of the universal microwave radiation vanishes. In this paper we place a bound of b$< 10^{-25}$ based on observations of horizontal air showers with $n_e \geq 5 \times 10^6$. We report the results of an investigation into the physical conditions in the mass outflows of asymptotic giant branch (AGB) carbon stars that are required for the formation of micron-sized presolar graphite grains, either with or without internal crystals of titanium carbide (TiC). In addition to providing detailed information about stellar nucleosynthesis, the structure and composition of presolar grains give unique information about the conditions of grain formation. In the present work we use laboratory observations of presolar graphite to gain insight into the physical conditions in circumstellar outflows from carbon AGB stars. The periodic pulsation of AGB stars enhances the gas density through shocks in the stellar atmosphere above the photosphere, promoting the condensation of dust grains. Copious mass outflow occurs largely because grains are coupled to the radiation field of the star, which accelerates them by radiation pressure; momentum is in turn transferred to gas molecules by collisions with grains. The dust/gas mixture is effectively a two-component fluid whose motion depends on atmospheric structure and which, in turn, influences that structure. In particular, the radiation pressure on the grains determines the velocity field of the outflow and thus the density distribution, while the density distribution itself determines the conditions of radiative transfer within the outflow and thus the effective radiation pressure.

Astronomical observations of SN1987A, such as the light curve, spectral intensities of lines, the X-ray emissions, etc., constrain the lifetime for the decay of a heavy neutrino 1 MeV less than or equivalent to m sub nu H less than or equal to 50 MeV through nu sub H yields nu sub 1+e(+)+e(-) exceeds 4 x 10 to the 15th exp(-m sub nuH/5MeV) seconds. Otherwise. resulting ionization energy deposits and stronger X-ray emission would have been observed. This coupled with traditional cosmological considerations argues that the lifetime of tau-neutrinos probably exceeds the age of the universe. This in turn would imply the standard cosmological mass bound does apply to nu sub tau, namely m sub nu sub tau less than or equivalent to 100 h squared eV (where h is the Hubble constant in units of 100 km/sec/mpc). The only significant loophole for these latter arguments would be if nu sub tau primarily decays rapidly into particles having very weak interactions.

IONS (ANURADHA), the experimental payload designed specifically to determine the ionization states, flux, composition, energy spectra and arrival directions of low energy (10 to 100 MeV/amu) anomalous cosmic ray ions of helium to iron in near-Earth space, had a highly successful flight and operation Spacelab-3 mission. The experiment combines the accuracy of a highly sensitive CR-39 nuclear track detector with active components included in the payload to achieve the experimental objectives. Post-flight analysis of detector calibration pieces placed within the payload indicated no measurable changes in detector response due to its exposure in spacelab environment. Nuclear tracks produced by alpha-particles, oxygen group and Fe ions in low energy anomalous cosmic rays were identified. It is calculated that the main detector has recorded high quality events of about 10,000 alpha-particles and similar number of oxygen group and heavier ions of low energy cosmic rays.

The steady state spectra of cosmic rays which are subject to a sporadic acceleration process, wherein the gain in energy in each encounter is a finite fraction of the particle energy are discussed. They are derived from a mathematical model which includes the possibility of energy dependent leakage of cosmic rays from the galaxy. Comparison with observations allows limits to be placed on the frequency and efficiency of such encounters.

The halo of edge on spiral galaxy of NGC 4631 is studied from 327 MHz to 10700 MHz to delineate the models of cosmic ray transport. Preliminary studies show that the spectral steepening as a function of height above the plane can be understood in terms of the simplest cosmic ray transport models, viz., simple isotropic diffusion in an infinite medium.
