The producer spot and the futures markets are reliable sources of price information. They differ in structure, composition and their role in commodity markets, with the latter participating in the price discovery process. An analysis of the producer market (cash)/futures price relationship for cotton in the Southwest region using the cointegration technique indicates that futures and producer prices of cotton are closely related. However, the futures market is the dominant market in terms of price information, and thus it can be used as price information for the producer cash market in the Southwest.

The prices of cotton in commodity markets are influenced by several factors. Among these, price information has the strongest impact because it affects price reporting. Daily Sport Cotton Quotations (DSCQ) which are provided by the Agricultural Marketing Service represent the producer price of cotton. The DSCQ has a critical function because it can influence marketing and resource allocation decisions. It is also used in the settlement of futures contracts. An evaluation of the reliability of DSCQ in reflecting producer prices in the Southwest region is presented.

Crop failures in China, India and Pakistan and fierce US competitiveness threaten much of Asia's textile industry. One of Asia's largest industries, textiles, depends heavily on cotton, the price for which rose past $1 per pound in Apr 1995 for the first time since the 1860s. The hike was caused by the boll worm and leaf-curl virus. This followed record-low prices in recent years as former Soviet republics dumped their goods on the world market. Now, China has become the world's biggest cotton importer, while America exports half of all it produces.

Manufacturers of man-made fibers expect to increase their share of the clothing market due to the rise in raw cotton prices. The price of raw cotton reached a five year high in Mar 1993, when it exceeded the level of 82 cents per pound. Cotton currently has a 57% share of the market for fabrics; its main competitors are polyester, with a 25% share, acrylic, with a 5% share, and rayon, with a 3% share.
