Hofstra's detailed and painstaking volumes will supersede Mrs. Gibson's as the edition of choice for anyone using the work of Isho dad on John. The article focuses on the cataloging of "The Bateman Hornbook" at the Houghton Library of Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The writer consults the standard book on the subject entitled "The History of the Horn Book," by Andrew W. Tuer to give the special piece the recognition it deserves. The hornbook was purchased in 1896 at an auction by Dr. Albert Figdor of Vienna. This article presents information related to books on B.A. Degree Diploma in Harvard. The era of the printed degree began at Harvard when the Corporation ordered a hundred diplomas in time to confer on the class of 1813. In earlier years, if a graduate wanted a diploma, an engrosser had to write out the prescribed text for him and he would take the document to the authorized person to sign. The first printed diplomas followed the look of these manuscript models. Since then, the diploma form has been completely overhauled five times: in 1860, 1903, 1935, 1961 and 1962. The history of these successive new models is a study in changing typographical taste, printing technology and Harvardian rhetoric. The history of the Harvard degree is recounted in "The Harvard B.A. Degree Diploma," and it is illustrated with specimens of the six different diploma designs. The book comes in a tray case, at the back of which are included the specimens, some from original printings and two newly struck from old plates in the Archives. The book was printed for the Harvard College Library by the author at the Jericho Press.
