Abstract

The isomeric and $\beta$-decay properties of neutron-rich $^{53-57}$Sc and $^{53,54}$Ca nuclei near neutron number $N$=32 are reported, and the low-energy level schemes of $^{53,54,56}$Sc and $^{53-57}$Ti are presented. The low-energy level structures of the $_{21}$Sc isotopes are discussed in terms of the coupling of the valence $1f_{7/2}$ proton to states in the corresponding $_{20}$Ca cores. Implications with respect to the robustness of the $N$=32 subshell closure are discussed, as well as the repercussions for a possible $N$=34 subshell closure., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures, accepted to Phys. Abstract

At the PF1B cold neutron beam line at the Institut Laue Langevin, the EXILL array consisting of EXOGAM, GASP and ILL-Clover detectors was used to perform (n,γ) measurements at very high coincidence rates. About ten different reactions were measured in autumn 2012 using a highly collimated cold neutron beam. In spring 2013, the EXOGAM array was combined with 16 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators in the EXILL&FATIMA campaign for the measurement of lifetimes using the generalised centroid difference method. We report on the properties of the set-ups and present first results from both campaigns.

Abstract

Deep-inelastic collisions of a 208Pb beam on a 208Pb target were performed using the ATLAS accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory. The Gammasphere detector array was used for the detection of prompt and delayed gamma-rays of the reaction products.207Tl is one proton away from the 208Pb doubly-magic nucleus. Its low-energy level structure is dominated by the single proton-hole states πs1/2−1, πd3/2−1 and πh11/2−1. The 11/2− state is isomeric with T1/2 = 1.33(11) s. The reaction partner of 207Tl is 209Bi, which has arelatively well established level scheme compared to 207Tl. Cross-coincidences between these two nuclei were used to confirm or establish levels above the 11/2− isomeric state in 207Tl. These states are obtained via breaking of the neutron core. Angular correlation analysis was performed on known transitions in 208Pb, proving the applicability of this method for multipolarity assignment.

Abstract

The occurrence of octupolar shapes in the Ba isotopic chain was recently established experimentally up to N = 90. To further extend the systematics, the evolution of shapes in the most neutron-rich members of the Z = 56 isotopic chain accessible at present, Ba-148,Ba-150, has been studied via beta decay at the ISOLDE Decay Station. This paper reports on the first measurement of the positive-and negative-parity low-spin excited states of 150Ba and presents an extension of the beta-decay scheme of Cs-148. Employing the fast timing technique, half-lives for the 2(1)(+) level in both nuclei have been determined, resulting in T-1/2 = 1.51(1) ns for Ba-148 and T-1/2 = 3.4(2) ns for Ba-150. The systematics of low-spin states, together with the experimental determination of the B(E2 : 2(+) -> 0(+)) transition probabilities, indicate an increasing collectivity in Ba148-150, towards prolate deformed shapes. The experimental data are compared to symmetry conserving configuration mixing (SCCM) calculations, confirming an evolution of increasingly quadrupole deformed shapes with a definite octupolar character.

Abstract

In the EXILL campaign a highly efficient array of HPGe detectors was operated at the cold neutron beam instrument PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of -rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 108 s-1 cm-2 at the target position and negligible neutron halo. The target was surrounded by an array of eight to ten anti-Compton shielded EXOGAM clover detectors, four to six anti-Compton shielded large coaxial GASP detectors and two smaller clover detectors. The detectors were arranged in an array of rhombicuboctahedron geometry, providing the possibility to carry out very precise angular correlation and directional-polarization correlation measurements. The trigger-less acquisition system allowed an event collection rate of up to 6 × 105 Hz. From triggerless collected data it was possible to construct decay schemes and in combination with the FATIMA array of LaBr3 detectors to analyze half-lives of excited levels in the pico- to micro-second range. Precise energy and efficiency calibrations of EXILL were performed using 27Al(n,γ)28Al and 35Cl(n,γ)36Cl reactions in the energy range from 30 keV up to 10 MeV.

During the AGATA campaign at GANIL, the neutron-deficient Sn region was populated via a multi-nucleon transfer reaction in order to directly measure the lifetime of the first excited states with a plunger device, providing complementary information to previous results obtained with Coulomb excitation experiments. Abstract

The K hindrance to the gamma decay is studied in the warm rotating W-174 nucleus, focusing on the weakening of the selection rules of the K quantum number with increasing excitation energy. W-174 was populated by the fusion reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 target, and its gamma decay was detected by the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to a BaF2 multiplicity filter at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN. A fluctuation analysis of gamma coincidence matrices gives a similar number of low-K and high-K discrete excited bands. The results are compared to simulations of the gamma-decay flow based on a microscopic cranked shell model at finite temperature in which the K mixing is governed by the interplay of Coriolis force with the residual interaction. Agreement between simulations and experiment is obtained only by hindering the E1 decay between low-K and high-K bands by an amount compatible with that determined by spectroscopic studies of K isomers in the same mass region, with a similar trend with excitation energy. The high-spin yrast structure of the 210Bi nucleus was investigated using -ray coincidence spectroscopy following deep-inelastic reactions in the 208Pb+208Pb system. Cascades of rays following the decay of a new isomer were identified. Spin-parity assignments to the states known from previous studies as well as to newly located excitations were made based on the measured angular distributions of rays combined with a transition conversion coefficient analysis.

Abstract

The transition between order and chaos is studied in the warm rotating nucleus 174 W by γ-spectroscopy, focusing on the conservation of selection rules of the K quantum number with the excitation energy, where K is the projection of the total angular momentum on the symmetry axis. The 174 W nucleus was populated by the fusion-evaporation reaction of 80 Ti (at 217 MeV) on a 128 Te backed target. The measurement was performed in July 2010 at Legnaro National Laboratories of INFN using the AGATA Demonstrator HPGe-array coupled to an array of 27 BaF 2 scintillators, named Helena. The data analysis concentrates on γ-γ coincidence matrices selecting the γ-decay flow populating low- K and high- K structures. By a statistical fluctuation analysis the total number of low- K and high- K bands can be evaluated as a function of excitation energy. Comparisons with cranked shell model calculations at finite temperature are used to extract information on the onset of the chaotic regime as a function of excitation energy.

Deep-inelastic collisions of a 208Pb beam on a 208Pb target were performed using the ATLAS accelerator at Argonne National Laboratory. Prompt and delayed -rays from the reaction products were detected using the GAMMASPHERE detector array. The cross-coincidence method was used to identify transitions in 207Tl, by gating on -rays from its bettercharacterised reaction partner 209Bi. A number of new transitions were found in 207Tl. Abstract

The study of nuclear cluster states bound by valence neutrons is a field of recent large interest. In particular, it is interesting to study the pre-formation of α-clusters in α-conjugate nuclei and the dynamical condensation of clusters during nuclear reactions. The NUCL-EX collaboration (INFN, Italy) is carrying out a research campaign studying preequilibrium emission of light charged particles and cluster properties of light and medium mass nuclei. For this purpose, a comparative study of the three nuclear reactions: O 16 + Si 30 , O 18 + Si 28 and F 19 + 27Al, has been recently carried out using the GARFIELD+RCo 4π setup. After a general introduction on the experimental campaign, the preliminary results for the three systems are presented.
