We use elastic and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to study the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions and spin excitations in the two-dimensional (2D) zig-zag antiferromagnet FePSe$_3$. By determining the magnetic order parameter across the AF phase transition, we conclude that the AF phase transition in FePSe$_3$ is first-order in nature. In addition, our INS measurements reveal that the spin waves in the AF ordered state have a large easy-axis magnetic anisotropy gap, consistent with an Ising Hamiltonian, and possible biquadratic magnetic exchange interactions. On warming across $T_N$, we find that dispersive spin excitations associated with three-fold rotational symmetric AF fluctuations change into FM spin fluctuations above $T_N$. These results suggest that the first-order AF phase transition in FePSe$_3$ may arise from the competition between $C_3$ symmetric AF and $C_1$ symmetric FM spin fluctuations around $T_N$, in place of a conventional second-order AF phase transition.

Spin and lattice are two fundamental degrees of freedom in a solid, and their fluctuations about the equilibrium values in a magnetic ordered crystalline lattice form quasiparticles termed magnons (spin waves) and phonons (lattice waves), respectively. In most materials with strong spin-lattice coupling (SLC), the interaction of spin and lattice induces energy gaps in the spin wave dispersion at the nominal intersections of magnon and phonon modes. Here we use neutron scattering to show that in the two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals honeycomb lattice ferromagnetic CrGeTe3, spin waves propagating within the 2D plane exhibit an anomalous dispersion, damping, and break-down of quasiparticle conservation, while magnons along the c axis behave as expected for a local moment ferromagnet. These results indicate the presence of dynamical SLC arising from the zero-temperature quantum fluctuations in CrGeTe3, suggesting that the observed in-plane spin waves are mixed spin and lattice quasiparticles fundamentally different from pure magnons and phonons., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures; Nature Communication in press

Two dimensional van der Waals ferromagnets with honeycomb structures are expected to host the bosonic version of Dirac particles in their magnon excitation spectra. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we study spin wave excitations in polycrystalline CrCl$_3$, which exhibits ferromagnetic honeycomb layers with antiferromagnetic stackings along the $c$-axis. For comparison, polycrystal samples of CrI$_3$ with different grain sizes are also studied. We find that the powder-averaged spin wave spectrum of CrCl$_3$ at $T$ = 2 K can be adequately explained by the two dimensional spin Hamiltonian including in-plane Heisenberg exchanges only. The observed excitation does not exhibit noticeable broadening in energy, which is in remarkable contrast to the substantial broadening observed in CrI$_3$. Based on these results, we conclude that the ferromagnetic phase of CrCl$_3$ hosts massless Dirac magnons and is thus not topological., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The search for topological spin excitations in recently discovered two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) magnetic materials is important because of their potential applications in dissipation-less spintronics. In the 2D vdW ferromagnetic (FM) honeycomb lattice CrI$_3$(T$_C$= 61 K), acoustic and optical spin waves were found to be separated by a gap at the Dirac points. The presence of such a gap is a signature of topological spin excitations if it arises from the next nearest neighbor(NNN) Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) or bond-angle dependent Kitaev interactions within the Cr honeycomb lattice. Alternatively, the gap is suggested to arise from an electron correlation effect not associated with topological spin excitations. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering to conclusively demonstrate that the Kitaev interactions and electron correlation effects cannot describe spin waves, Dirac gap and their in-plane magnetic field dependence. Our results support the DM interactions being the microscopic origin of the observed Dirac gap. Moreover, we find that the nearest neighbor (NN) magnetic exchange interactions along the axis are antiferromagnetic (AF)and the NNN interactions are FM. Therefore, our results unveil the origin of the observedcaxisAF order in thin layers of CrI$_3$, firmly determine the microscopic spin interactions in bulk CrI$_3$, and provide a new understanding of topology-driven spin excitations in 2D vdW magnets.

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a state of matter where unpaired electrons' spins in a solid are quantum entangled, but do not show magnetic order in the zero-temperature limit. Because such a state may be important to the microscopic origin of high-transition temperature superconductivity and useful for quantum computation, the experimental realization of QSL is a long-sought goal in condensed matter physics. Although neutron scattering experiments on the two-dimensional (2D) spin-1/2 kagome-lattice ZnCu3(OD)6Cl2 and effective spin-1/2 triangular lattice YbMgGaO4 have found evidence for a continuum of magnetic excitations, the hallmark of a QSL carrying 'fractionalized quantum excitations', at very low temperature, magnetic and nonmagnetic site chemical disorder complicates the interpretation of the data. Recently, the three-dimensional (3D) Ce3+ pyrochlore lattice Ce2Sn2O7 has been suggested as a clean, effective spin-1/2 QSL candidate, but there is no evidence of a spin excitation continuum. Here we use thermodynamic, muon spin relaxation ({\mu} SR), and neutron scattering experiments on single crystals of Ce2Zr2O7, a compound isostructural to Ce2Sn2O7, to demonstrate the absence of magnetic ordering and the presence of a spin excitation continuum at 35 mK, consistent with the expectation of a QSL. Since our neutron diffraction and diffuse scattering measurements on Ce2Zr2O7 reveal no evidence of oxygen deficiency and magnetic/nonmagnetic ion disorder as seen in other pyrochlores, Ce2Zr2O7 may be the first example of a 3D QSL material with minimum magnetic and nonmagnetic chemical disorder.

In two dimensional honeycomb ferromagnets, bosonic magnon quasiparticles (spin waves) may either behave as massless Dirac fermions or form topologically protected edge states. The key ingredient defining their nature is the next-nearest neighbor Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction that breaks the inversion symmetry of the lattice and discriminates chirality of the associated spin-wave excitations. Using inelastic neutron scattering, we find that spin waves of the insulating honeycomb ferromagnet CrI$_3$ ($T_C=61$ K) have two distinctive bands of ferromagnetic excitations separated by a $\sim$4 meV gap at the Dirac points. These results can only be understood by considering a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with DM interaction, thus providing experimental evidence that spin waves in CrI$_3$ can have robust topological properties useful for dissipationless spintronic applications., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures with supplemental information, accepted for publication in Phys. We find the realization of large converse magnetoelectric (ME) effects at room temperature in a multiferroic hexaferrite Ba$_{0.52}$Sr$_{2.48}$Co$_{2}$Fe$_{24}$O$_{41}$ single crystal, in which rapid change of electric polarization in low magnetic fields (about 5 mT) is coined to a large ME susceptibility of 3200 ps/m. The modulation of magnetization then reaches up to 0.62 $\mu$$_{B}$/f.u. in an electric field of 1.14 MV/m. We find further that four ME states induced by different ME poling exhibit unique, nonvolatile magnetization versus electric field curves, which can be approximately described by an effective free energy with a distinct set of ME coefficients.

We show that low field magnetoelectric (ME) properties of helimagnets Ba0.5Sr1.5Zn2(Fe1-xAlx)12O22 can be efficiently tailored by Al-substitution level. As x increases, the critical magnetic field for switching electric polarization is systematically reduced from ~1 T down to ~1 mT, and the ME susceptibility is greatly enhanced to reach a giant value of 2.0 x 10^4 ps/m at an optimum x = 0.08. We find that control of nontrivial orbital moment in the octahedral Fe sites through the Al-substitution is crucial for fine tuning of magnetic anisotropy and obtaining the conspicuously improved ME characteristics.

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering studies of Li(Ni$_{1-x}$Fe$_{x}$)PO$_4$ single crystals reveal anomalous spin-wave dispersions along the crystallographic direction parallel to the characteristic wave vector of the magnetic incommensurate phase. The anomalous spin-wave dispersion ({\it magnetic soft mode}) indicates the instability of the Ising-like ground state that eventually evolves into the incommensurate phase as the temperature is raised. The pure LiNiPO$_4$ system ($x=0$), undergoes a first-order magnetic phase transition from a long-range incommensurate phase to an antiferromagnetic ground state at {\it T}$_N$ = 20.8 K. At 20% Fe concentrations, although the AFM ground state is to a large extent preserved as that of the pure system, the phase transition is second-order, and the incommensurate phase is completely suppressed. Analysis of the dispersion curves using a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian that includes inter- and in-plane nearest and next-nearest neighbor couplings reveals frustration due to strong competing interactions between nearest- and a next-nearest neighbor site, consistent with the observed incommensurate structure. The Fe substitution only slightly lowers the extent of the frustration, sufficient to suppress the IC phase. An energy gap in the dispersion curves gradually decreases with the increase of Fe content from $\sim$2 meV for the pure system ($x=0$) to $\sim$0.9 meV for $x=0.2$.

We use inelastic neutron scattering to explore the evolution of the low energy spin dynamics in the electron-doped cuprate Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4-d (PLCCO) as the system is tuned from its nonsuperconducting, as-grown antiferromagnetic (AF) state into an optimally-doped superconductor (Tc~24 K) without static AF order. The low temperature, low energy response of the spin excitations in under-doped samples is coupled to the presence of the AF phase, whereas the low-energy magnetic response for samples near optimal Tc exhibits spin fluctuations surprisingly insensitive to the sample temperature. This evolution of the low energy excitations is consistent with the influence of a quantum critical point in the phase diagram of PLCCO associated with the suppression of the static AF order.
