22. Effect of graphene additive on flexural and interlaminar shear strength properties of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer composite

Abstract

Composite materials are widely used in various manufacturing fields from aeronautic and aerospace industries to the automotive industry. This is due to their outstanding mechanical properties with respect to their light weight. However, some studies showed that the major flaws of these materials are located at the fiber/matrix interface. Therefore, enhancing matrix adhesion properties could significantly improve the overall material characteristics. This study aims to analyze the effect of graphene particles on the adhesion properties of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) through interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and flexural testing. Seven modified epoxy resins were prepared with different graphene contents. The CFRP laminates were next manufactured using a method that guarantees a repeatable and consistent fiber volume fraction with a low porosity level. Short beam shear and flexural tests were performed to compare the effect of graphene on the mechanical properties of the different laminates. It was found that 0.25 wt.% of graphene filler enhanced the flexural strength by 5%, whilst the higher concentrations (2 and 3 wt.%) decreased the flexural strength by about 7%. Regarding the ILSS, samples with low concentrations (0.25 and 0.5 wt.%) demonstrated a decent increase. Meanwhile, 3 wt.% slightly decreases the ILSS.

We report a case of arhinia in a female newborn and briefly review the literature.

Abstract

La panniculite mésentérique est une inflammation non spécifique du mésentère. Sa présentation clinique est variable en fonction du stade de la maladie Les signes cliniques sont principalement des douleurs mais la moitié des patients restent asymptomatiques. Une masse abdominale palpable, perte de poids nausées et vomissements. Il peut exister un syndrome inflammatoire d'intensité variable. La panniculite est évoquée devant une hyperdensité du mésentère au scanner avec des adhérences avec les organes de voisinage. Histologiquement il existe dégénérescence des adipocytes à l'origine d'une réaction à corps étranger, puis apparaissent des lésions inflammatoires lymphoplasmocytaires. Nous rapportons une nouvelle observation de panniculite mésentérique associé à une pancréatite aiguë.

Abstract

Tunisia has experienced a performance when pursuing a constant real exchange rate rule. The limitations of this rule are beginning to emerge in the context of a more open economy, which desire to relax capital controls. This paper estimates the equilibrium real exchange rate of the dinar vis à vis the euro and the $US from 1983 to 2000, using quarterly data, based on the following fundamental variables: terms of trade, net capital inflows and the differential of productivity. Results show that Tunisian dinar was overvalued before the 1986 devaluation, becomes close to its equilibrium value over the 90s'. In the beginning of this century (2000), authorities permit a larger fluctuation of the real effective exchange rate. .

Abstract

L�evisceration transanale de l�intestin grele au cours d�un traumatisme ferme de l�abdomen est une situation exceptionnelle. Nous rapportons le cas d�une fille de 7 ans, recue pour un etat de choc hemorragique avec une evisceration transanale de l�intestin grele suite a une contusion de l�abdomen. Ce tableau clinique est survenu au decours d�un accident de la circulation. La laparotomie exploratrice permettait de decouvrir une plaie longitudinale de la face anterieure du rectum, situee au dessus de la reflexion peritoneale, a travers laquelle passaient les anses greles. Une suture de la plaie rectale associee a une ileostomie double apres resection du grele eviscere et un a drainage du cul-de-sac de Douglas ont ete realises. L�enfant est decede en postoperatoire precoce. A travers cette observation, les auteurs se proposent de revoir les cas precedemment decrits et de discuter les options therapeutiques.

41. Vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation diagnosed prenatally: A case report.

Abstract

The vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation is a rare congenital malformation of the cerebral blood vessels. It is a result of the persistence of an embryonic vessel that drains multiple arteriovenous shunts. This malformation can cause a multitude of symptoms ranging from cardiac failure to headaches depending on the age of presentation. In the fetus, cardiac manifestations are rare and are linked to a very poor prognosis. That's why prenatal diagnosis is crucial in early detection and management. We present a case of a vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation, diagnosed prenatally with ultrasonography. The newborn developed widely a high-output cardiac failure. Abstract

Subcutaneous fat necrosis of the newborn is a self-limited disorder of the panniculus that arises in the first six weeks of life. Some differential diagnoses may be difficult such as bacterial cellulitis or erysipelas. The prognosis is usually favorable but there are serious complications for which the patient must be regularly monitored, especially hypercalcemia. We report a case of a full-term newborn with a liquidated area of subcutaneous fat necrosis. A surgical incision was performed because of the discomfort and the lack of regression. Hypercalcemia and nephrocalcinosis appeared afterward. A set of clinical, biological, and histological arguments allows the diagnosis of subcutaneous fat necrosis. Follow-up to early detection and to manage such complications is necessary.

Abstract

Introduction: perioperative anxiety in children may lead to psychological and physiological side effects. Clonidine is in increasing use in the pediatric population as an anxiolytic, sedative, and analgesic because of its central alpha2-adrenergic agonist effect. Our study aimed to evaluate the effect of clonidine in the prevention of perioperative children´s anxiety., Methods: we conducted a prospective controlled randomized double-blinded clinical trial including children aged between 2 and 15 years undergoing tonsillectomy surgery. The patients were randomly allocated to receive either an intranasal dose of clonidine (4 μg/kg) (clonidine group) or an equal volume dose of saline solution (control group) 30 minutes before entering the operating room. The level of anxiety assessed using the m-YPAS score was recorded before premedication, at the time of parent-child separation, and at the time of installation in the operating room. Acceptance of premedication, degree of sedation on entering the operating room as well as agitation on awakening, and sedation on arrival post-anesthesia care unit were noted. Adverse effects were recorded during the surgical procedure and in the postoperative recovery room., Results: the number of patients analyzed was 78 with 39 patients in each group. There were no signification differences in demographic data and premedication acceptance between the two groups. Levels of anxiety before any premedication were similar in the two groups. However, the anxiety level 30 minutes after premedication and in the operating room was significantly lower in the clonidine group (p<0.001). Children who received clonidine showed better sedation on entering the operating room (p=0.002) as well as postoperatively on entering the post-anesthesia unit care (p=0.006). Abstract

Introduction: Langerhans cell sarcoma (LCS) is a very rare malignant tumor of Langerhans cells that may metastasize to many organs. The diagnosis of this tumor is difficult and its prognosis is poor., Aim: To report the difficulty to diagnose LCS, and discuss therapeutic management of this rare entity., Case Presentation: We report a case of LCS in a 52-year-old man who presented with an axillar lymphadenopathy. The diagnosis of nodular sclerosis type Hodgkin's disease was established after histologic examination. The patient was treated with chemotherapy (ABVD regimen: Doxorubicin, Bleomycin, Vinblastine, Dacarbazine) and radiotherapy with a partial response. However, disease recurrence was observed and histological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of Langerhans cell sarcoma. A revision of the initial histological examination concluded to the diagnosis of sarcoma from the beginning. We chose the ESHAP (Etoposide, Methylprednisolone, Aracytine, Cisplatin) regimen and clinical improvement of LCS was obtained after 2 cycles but the patient had a fatal outcome and died by disease progression., Conclusion: Because of its rarity, diagnosis is difficult and an optimal treatment strategy for this disease has not yet been identified. Polychemotherapy can be an effective modality for the treatment of LCS.

46. Treacher Collins syndrome: A case report and review of literature.

Abstract

Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is one of the rare genetic syndromes which is specified by symmetrical craniofacial dysmorphism without growth abnormalities or neurological disorders. The inheritance is usually autosomal dominant but sometimes it is a sporadic mutation. Prenatal diagnosis could be realized by genetic testing of a chorionic villus sample or amniocentesis if one of the parents is affected. At birth, the most common features are downward-sloping palpebral clefts, small badly hemmed and folded ears, and mandibular hypoplasia which could lead to respiratory distress. All of these clinical features exist in our case. Goldenhar syndrome shares with TCS some facial features which are not symmetrical and it is also associated with vertebral abnormalities. Some patients with TCS are exposed to many complications and they require multi-disciplinary medical care. But all of them need psychiatric care to fight social rejection. The aim of our report is to describe the most common features of TCS and similar syndromes. Abstract

Introduction: Patients with ferromagnetic cardiac devices, particularly cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIED) such as pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators, are often inappropriately deprived of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for safety reasons. This consensus document is written by a multidisciplinary working group involving rhythmologists, interventional cardiologists, echocardiographists and radiologists. Its objective is to establish good practice recommendations to optimize the management of patients with cardiac devices requiring MRI examination, while ensuring their safety and facilitating their access to MRI.
