In order to generate electricity from solar PV modules, this study proposed a novel high-voltage gain step-up (HVGSU) DC–DC converter for solar photovoltaic system operation with a maximum power point (MPP) tracker. The PV array can supply power to the load via a DC–DC converter, increasing the output voltage. Due to the stochastic nature of solar energy, PV arrays must use the MPPT control approach to function at the MPP. This study suggests a novel HVGSU converter that uses the primary boost conversion cell and combines switched capacitors and voltage multiplier cells. The proposed topology is upgradeable for high-voltage gain step-up and can be incorporated as well. A clamp circuit reuses the energy that leaks out so that the switch voltage stress and power loss are kept to a minimum. One thing that makes it stand out is that the voltage stress on the diodes and switch stays low and constant even as the duty cycle changes. Additionally, the inductor greatly reduces the diodes’ reverse recovery losses. There is a lot of information about steady-state analyses, operation principles, and design guidelines. A prototype circuit is built to test the maximum power point tracking operation with voltage conversion from 20–40 V to 380 V at 150 W. The results of the experiments support the theoretical analysis and claimed benefits. The proposed converter has the ability to track the maximum power point and a high conversion efficiency over a wide range of power. A weighted efficiency of 90–96% is shown by the prototype.

The multilevel inverters (MLIs) are capable of handling large quantities of power and generating high-quality output voltages. Consequently, the size of the filters is reduced, and the circuitry is simplified. As a result, they have a diverse range of uses in the industrial sector, especially in smart grids. The input voltage boosting feature is required to utilize the MLI with renewable energy. In addition, a large number of components are required to attain higher output voltage levels, which increases the cost of the circuit and weight. A variety of MLI topologies have been identified to reduce losses, device quantity, and device ratings. The selective harmonic elimination (SHE) approaches reduce distinct lower order harmonics by computing the ideal switching angles. This research presents a nine–level Packed E–Cell (PEC–9) inverter that uses selective harmonic elimination to eliminate total harmonic distortion. In order to calculate the best switching angle, the reptile search algorithm (RSA) is implemented in this paper, a nature–inspired metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the hunting behavior of the crocodile. The hunting behavior of crocodiles is implemented in two main steps: the first is encircling, which is accomplished by belly walking or high walking, and the second is hunting, which is accomplished by hunting cooperation or hunting coordination. In this technique, nonlinear transcendental equations have been solved. The simulation was run in the MATLAB R2021b software environment. The simulation results suggest that the RSA outperforms the other metaheuristic algorithms. Furthermore, the simulation result was validated on a hardware setup using DSP–TMS320F28379D in the laboratory.

An exponential curve-based (ECB) control strategy has been proposed in this paper. The proposed ECB control strategy is based on the growth and decay of charge in the series RC circuit and the harmonic elimination by detecting the Fourier expansion series of the auxiliary equipment power supply system’s (AEPSS) three-phase output voltage level. It can quickly adjust each duty cycle to the best value for driving the isolated three-phase inverter (ITPI) and produce a three-phase 380 VAC/60 Hz output. A comparison of the AEPSS output performance using the traditional voltage cancellation method (VCM) and the proposed ECB control strategy was performed. The hardware implementation of the system was performed on the prototype developed in the laboratory. These control strategies are tested under three conditions, i.e., (i) Vi = 550 VDC. (ii) Vi = 750 VDC. (iii) Vi = 800 VDC. The total harmonic distortion (THD) is 13.7%, 14.5%, and 14.9%, and the output voltage Vo is 372.3 VAC, 377.3 VAC, and 385.3 VAC using the traditional control strategy at three test conditions, respectively. However, the THD is 7.2%, 7.8%, and 8.0%, and the output voltage Vo is 382.2 VAC, 381.2 VAC, and 381.9 VAC using the proposed ECB control strategy under the test conditions. It is obvious from the hardware results that the output voltage harmonics and output voltage level for the proposed ECB control strategy are superior to the traditional VCM. The voltage produced from the AEPSS using the proposed ECB control strategy is more stable and has better quality. In addition, the filter size is also reduced.

Unlike silicon carbide ceramic, the alumina ceramic and zirconia ceramic are by its very nature weakly absorbing in visible and near infrared wavebands. Therefore, open-cell foams made of such ceramics are rarely used in applications requiring strong absorption of radiation energy, such as solar absorbers. In order to improve the potential of such foams, open-cell foams with dual-scale pores were digitally designed in the limit of geometric optics. The first-order pores are obtained by Voronoi tessellation technique and then the second-order pores are realized by the design of 'porous strut'. A Monte Carlo Ray-tracing method is applied in the dual-scale foam structure for radiative transfer calculation. The parameterized study is conducted on the radiation absorption of alumina foam sheets and zirconia foam sheets. The results show that for the present cases, the designed dual-scale alumina foams with strut porosity p s = 0.3 can increase the normal absorptance within the wavebands from 0.4 μm to 7.0 μm by 62.7% than the foams with single-scale pores. For the zirconia foams, this increase is 115.9% within the wavebands from 1.2 μm to 7.6 μm. The findings can provide strong confidence on dual-scale foams to enhance the absorption of radiation energy in potential applications.

High gain dc-dc converters are used in several applications which include solar photovoltaic system, switch-mode power supplies and fuel cells. In this paper, an ultra-high gain dc-dc boost converter is proposed and analyzed in detail. The converter has a gain of six times as compared with the boost converter. The high gain is achieved by utilizing switched inductors and switched capacitors. A modified voltage multiplier cell (VMC) with switched inductors is proposed. The converter has a single switch which makes its operation easy. Moreover, the voltage across the switch, diodes and capacitors are less than the output voltage which increases the overall efficiency of the converter. The converter performance in steady-state is analyzed in detail and it is compared with other latest high gain converters. The working of the converter in non-ideal conditions is also discussed in detail. The loss analysis is done using PLECS software by incorporating the real models of switches and diodes from the datasheet. To confirm and validate the working of the proposed converter a hardware prototype of 200 W is developed in the laboratory. The converter achieves high gain at low duty ratios and its performance is found to be good in open and closed loop conditions.

This study proposes an induction heating system with maximum power-point tracking (MPPT) control strategy. The system architecture adopts a 1.3 kW full-bridge series resonant circuit with a step-down transformer and adjusts the operating frequency by a microcontroller unit to improve the heating efficiency. Secondly, the proposed MPPT control strategy based on induction heating uses the relationship between the operating frequency and the system heating temperature to find the operating frequency corresponding to the maximum power point (MPP) quickly. Then, an additional hill-climbing algorithm adjusting the duty cycle is applied to reach the duty cycle corresponding to the MPP. Under the simulation and actual experimental measurement, the traditional control strategy has 76% and 68% at 500 and 750 degrees, respectively, and it takes 320 s for the system to reach 750 degrees. By contrast, the proposed MPPT control strategy achieves 96% efficiency when the system heating temperature is 500 and 750 degrees, and it only takes 120 s to reach the system heating temperature to 750 degrees. The contribution of this study is that the traditional full-bridge series resonant converter is implemented for the proposed induction heating system, where the proposed MPPT control strategy applied to the proposed induction heating system significantly has high efficiency, high stability, and high heating speed advantages, which can be accurately controlled.

This study proposes a new isolated intelligent adjustable buck-boost (IIABB) converter with an intelligent control strategy that is suitable for regenerative energy systems with unsteady output voltages. It also serves as a reliable voltage source for loads such as battery systems, microgrids, etc. In addition, the hill climbing (HC) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm can be utilized with this innovative IIABB converter to capture the MPP and then enhance system performance. In this converter, five inductors (LA, LB, LC, LD, and LE) and four power MOSFETs (SA, SB, SC, and SD) are used in the proposed novel isolated intelligent adjustable buck-boost (IIABB) converter to adjust the applied voltage across the load side. It also has a constant, stable output voltage. The new IIABB converter is simulated and verified using MATLAB R2021b, and the performances of the proposed IIABB converter and conventional SEPIC converter are compared. The solar photovoltaic module output voltages of 20 V, 30 V, and 40 V are given as inputs to the proposed IIABB converter, and the total output voltage of the proposed converter is 48 V. In the new IIABB converter, the duty cycle of the power MOSFET has a small variation. The proposed IIABB converter has an efficiency of 92~99%. On the other hand, in the conventional SEPIC converter, the duty cycle of a power MOSFET varies greatly depending on the relationship between the output and input voltage, which deteriorates the efficiency of the converter. As a result, this research contributes to the development of a novel type of IIABB converter that may be employed in renewable energy systems to considerably increase system performance and reduce the cost and size of the system.

This study proposed a new photovoltaic module quick regulate (PVM-QR) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm, which can eliminate the disturbance problem of the hill-climbing (HC) algorithm, especially under low irradiance level and partial shading conditions (PSC). This proposed algorithm has the advantage that it only uses the detection photovoltaic module (PVM) impedance and the open-circuit voltage to simply and quickly calculate the PVM temperature, the irradiance level, and then the key factor parameter u. To achieve the MPPT quickly and accurately, this proposed algorithm is developed for the prediction of the best MPPT duty cycle based on the irradiance level, parameter u, and load. This study verified the proposed MPPT by the measurement results, where the HC algorithm MPPT has 95% efficiency at 0.55 kW/m2 but diverges at 0.2 kW/m2 under uniform irradiation conditions (UIC), and the proposed MPPT algorithm has an improved efficiency (99%) under the same conditions. Moreover, the proposed MPPT algorithm has 99% efficiency under PSC, while the HC algorithm MPPT’s efficiency is 66%. This study implemented a simple-design circuit with the proposed MPPT algorithm for UIC and PSC, where the actual experiment results can also verify that the proposed algorithm performs better than the HC algorithm.

In this paper, a dynamic operational linear regulator (DOLR) based on a GaN high-electron-mobility transistor (HEMT) and wide-bandwidth operational amplifier was developed and implemented. The driving current could be regulated and controlled by the DOLR for 632 nm laser diodes. The constant-current mode for the continuous-wave laser and the pulse-width modulation (PWM) mode for the short-pulsed laser were realizable using this DOLR. This study focused on the rising-edge time change on the laser driving current when the DOLR was operated under the high-frequency PWM mode, because the parasitic components on the GaN HEMT, laser diodes, printed circuit board, and power wires could influence the current’s dynamic behavior. Therefore, the equivalent circuit models of the laser diode and GaN HEMT were applied to establish a DOLR simulation circuit in order to observe the rising-edge time change on the laser driving current. A DOLR prototype was achieved, and so experimental waveform measurements could be implemented to verify the DOLR simulation and operation.

This study aims to implement a single-stage differential boost inverter (SSDBI) applied in a single-stage battery energy storage system (BESS) topology that can supply power from a lower-voltage battery module to an alternating current (AC) load. Compared with the common two-stage topology, which has a two-stage converter and higher-voltage battery module array, the single-stage topology can reduce the number of cells and components and improve the power density. In addition, a modified sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) control was proposed to reduce the control complexity of the SSDBI while improving the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the inverter. The modified SPWM control can reduce the duty ratio of the SSDBI and the stress on the components in order to improve the AC voltage output waveform and reduce the THD.

High gain DC-DC converters are getting popular due to the increased use of renewable energy sources (RESs). Common ground between the input and output, low voltage stress across power switches and high voltage gain at lower duty ratios are desirable features required in any high gain DC-DC converter. DC-DC converters are widely used in DC microgrids to supply power to meet local demands. In this work, a high step-up DC-DC converter is proposed based on the voltage lift (VL) technique using a single power switch. The proposed converter has a voltage gain greater than a traditional boost converter (TBC) and Traditional quadratic boost converter (TQBC). The effect of inductor parasitic resistances on the voltage gain of the converter is discussed. The losses occurring in various components are calculated using PLECS software. To confirm the performance of the converter, a hardware prototype of 200 W is developed in the laboratory. The simulation and hardware results are presented to determine the performance of the converter in both open-loop and closed-loop conditions. In closed-loop operation, a PI controller is used to maintain a constant output voltage when the load or input voltage is changed.

This article presents a novel buck–boost converter-based topology suitable for supercapacitors and grid-connected solar PV system applications. The proposed converter can handle a wide range of voltage variations at the input side, making it ideal for extracting most of the energy from supercapacitors or a solar PV system connected to the input side of the converter. The output voltage of the converter is non-inverting which makes the control easier. The design of passive components, continuous mode operation, and discontinuous mode operation are all thoroughly discussed. A low-power hardware prototype of three hundred watts is developed and tested in the laboratory to validate the theoretical aspects of the converter.

In this paper, the analysis and discussion are presented for two prominent types of wireless charging, namely inductive power transfer (IPT) and capacitive power transfer (CPT). The paper presents a comparative analysis between CPT and IPT. A comparison between different geometries of plates used in CPT is performed and it is shown that rectangular-shaped plates have the best power transfer efficiency. The effect of foreign particles between the capacitor plates of a single-module as well as a double-module CPT system on capacitance and energy transfer density are also investigated in the paper. The case of ceramic coating on the capacitor plates and its effects on the capacitance and energy transfer density with varying thickness are analyzed and presented. Different naturally occurring particles such as water, sand and wet sand have been simulated between the capacitor plates of the CPT system and their respective impact on power transfer is analyzed and the simulation results are demonstrated.

This study aims to implement a SSDBI (single-stage differential boost inverter, SSDBI) applying in a single-stage BESS (battery energy storage system, BESS) topology, which can supply power from lower voltage battery module to AC load. Compared with the common two-stage topology, which has a two-stage converter and higher voltage battery module array, the single-stage topology can reduce the number of cells and components, and improve the power density. In addition, a modified SPWM control was proposed to reduce the control complexity of the SSDBI while improving the THD of the inverter. The modified SPWM control can reduce the duty ratio of the SSDBI and the stress on the components to improve the AC voltage output waveform and reduce the THD value about 2.654%.

The traditional perturbation and observation (P&amp, O) maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm of a structure is simple and low-cost. However, the P&amp, O algorithm is prone to divergence under solar radiation when the latter varies rapidly and the P&amp, O algorithm cannot track the maximum power point (MPP) under partial shading conditions (PSCs). This study proposes an algorithm from the P&amp, O algorithm combined with the solar radiation value detection scheme, where the solar radiation value detection is based on the solar photovoltaic (SPV) module equivalent conductance threshold control (CTC). While the proposed algorithm can immediately judge solar radiation, it also has suitable control strategies to achieve the high efficiency of MPPT especially for the rapid change in solar radiation and PSCs. In the actual test of the proposed algorithm and the P&amp, O algorithm, the MPPT efficiency of the proposed algorithm could reach 99% under solar radiation, which varies rapidly, and under PSCs. However, in the P&amp, O algorithm, the MPPT efficiency was 96% under solar radiation, which varies rapidly, while the MPPT efficiency was only 80% under PSCs. Furthermore, in verifying the experimental results, the proposed algorithm’s performance was higher than the P&amp, O algorithm.

This study implements a multifunctional charger based on a dual-switching, bidirectional flyback converter (DSBFC). The proposed charger adopts seven charging methods, including the incremental-current charging, constant-voltage (CV) charging, constant-current (CC) charging, pulse-current (PC) charging, triangular-current (TC) charging, sinusoidal-current (SC) charging, and positive/negative pulse-current (Reflex) charging methods. The charging process of a lithium-ion battery is divided into three stages: an initial term, a mid-term, and a final term. In the initial term, the incremental-current charging method is used in the initial term of charging for a soft start and to inhibit an increase in temperature. In the mid-term, five charging methods, including CC, PC, TC, SC, and Reflex-current charging, are used for charging. The CV charging method prevents overcharging the lithium-ion battery in the final term. Based on our experimental results, this study compares the four charging methods (PC, TC, SC, and Reflex-current) with the CC charging method to verify their improvement of the charging speed and increase in temperature in the mid-term. The charging speeds increased by 14.38%, 14.04%, 16.36%, and 27.27%, respectively, and the rise in temperature decreased by 37.8%, 40.5%, 48.6%, and 13.51%, respectively; all performed better than the CC charging method. Finally, users can adjust the charging method of the proposed DSBFC according to the needs of batteries so as to achieve excellent performance.

This study proposes a novel maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control strategy for the solar photovoltaic power system (SPPS). The proposed system adopts two solar photovoltaic modules of 430 W, which are connected to a boost converter and an MPPT controller, since the traditional MPPT algorithm (such as perturbation and observation [P&O] algorithm) can hardly reach maximum power point (MPP) under low irradiance level and partial shading conditions (PSC), which leads to the low efficiency of the SPPS. The speed of light optical path difference measurement (SLOPDM) MPPT control strategy has been developed in this study to overcome this problem. The estimation of the optical path angle difference is used as the basis for the proposed control strategy. This is done by determining the relationship between the optical path angle difference, solar photovoltaic power impedance Rspv and load Ro, and then calculating the duty cycle corresponding to the MPP, which then drives the boost converter to capture the MPP. The experimental results verify the proposed system, which shows the efficiency comparison between the SLOPDM MPPT algorithm, solar angle and horizon (SAH) algorithm, and P&O algorithm under PSC and uniform irradiance conditions (UIC) at irradiance levels of 700 W/m2 and 65 W/m2. It is evident from the comparison that the efficiency of the SLOPDM MPPT algorithm is 99% under both conditions, which is higher than the SAH and P&O algorithms. The SLOPDM MPPT algorithm can precisely, rapidly, and stably be operated at MPP. The contribution of this study is that the proposed MPPT control strategy can help achieve the high−performance of SPPS without changing the hardware circuit design and requiring any additional solar power meter. This reduces the cost and the complexity of the system significantly.

The growth of renewable energy in the last two decades has led to the development of new power electronic converters. The DC microgrid can operate in standalone mode, or it can be grid-connected. A DC microgrid consists of various distributed generation (DG) units like solar PV arrays, fuel cells, ultracapacitors, and microturbines. The DC-DC converter plays an important role in boosting the output voltage in DC microgrids. DC-DC converters are needed to boost the output voltage so that a common voltage from different sources is available at the DC link. A conventional boost converter (CBC) suffers from the problem of limited voltage gain, and the stress across the switch is usually equal to the output voltage. The output from DG sources is low and requires high-gain boost converters to enhance the output voltage. In this paper, a new high-gain DC-DC converter with quadratic voltage gain and reduced voltage stress across switching devices was proposed. The proposed converter was an improvement over the CBC and quadratic boost converter (QBC). The converter utilized only two switched inductors, two capacitors, and two switches to achieve the gain. The converter was compared with other recently developed topologies in terms of stress, the number of passive components, and voltage stress across switching devices. The loss analysis also was done using the Piecewise Linear Electrical Circuit Simulation (PLCES). The experimental and theoretical analyses closely agreed with each other.

A noninverting DC-DC converter with high voltage gain and low voltage stress on the switches for industrial applications is proposed in this research article. The proposed converter has used a voltage multiplier cell twice in the circuit that gives the proposed converter a symmetrical configuration and provides low voltage stress across both the switches. The symmetrical configuration of the proposed converter makes it easier to select the components. The proposed converter provides a voltage gain that is more than three times of the conventional boost converter. A 200-W hardware prototype of the proposed converter has been developed and tested under continuous conduction for static and dynamic conditions. The power loss analysis is done using PLECS software by incorporating the real parameters of switches and diodes from the datasheet. The converter performance is found to be good in open-loop conditions and is in agreement with the theoretical analysis. Increasing energy demand globally has led to exploring ways of utilizing renewable resources for sustainable development. More recently, the integration of renewable distributed resources in small- and large-scale grid has been seriously researched. Development in renewable power sources and its integration with the grid require voltage level conversion to match the grid/micro-grid level. The voltage level conversion is brought about by employing Direct Current-Direct Current (DC-DC) converters with boosting features. The paper presents a wide gain range DC-DC boost converter with a low-stress on switching devices. The proposed converter&rsquo, s voltage gain is high compared with the conventional quadratic boost converter and other recently developed high gain boost converters. The topology has been compared with recently proposed topologies, and comparative analysis based on various performance parameters has shown that the topology is suitable for renewable and sustainable energy storage and grid integration. The power loss analysis has been done by incorporating the switching and conduction losses. A hardware prototype of 150 W has been developed to validate the converter&rsquo, s performance in steady-state as well as in dynamic conditions.

In this paper, a new transformerless high voltage gain dc-dc converter is proposed for low and medium power application. The proposed converter has high quadratic gain and utilizes only two inductors to achieve this gain. It has two switches that are operated simultaneously, making control of the converter easy. The proposed converter&rsquo, s output voltage gain is higher than the conventional quadratic boost converter and other recently proposed high gain quadratic converters. A voltage multiplier circuit (VMC) is integrated with the proposed converter, which significantly increases the converter&rsquo, s output voltage. Apart from a high output voltage, the proposed converter has low voltage stress across switches and capacitors, which is a major advantage of the proposed topology. A hardware prototype of 200 W of the proposed converter is developed in the laboratory to validate the converter&rsquo, s performance. The efficiency of the converter is obtained through PLECS software by incorporating the switching and conduction losses.

In this study, a laser headlight electrical system was developed and implemented to measure and compare the electro-optic characteristics of the blue-beam laser diodes (BBLDs). To observe different temperatures (from negative to positive temperatures) that cause optical output power (OOP) and electrical power variations of the BBLDs, BBLDs were placed in an ambient temperature testing chamber, and the electro-optic characteristics of the BBLDs were measured to estimate the electro-optic conversion efficiencies. The different OOPs and electro-optic conversion efficiencies at different temperatures can be obtained when OOP adjustment was performed by average current and low-frequency pulse-duty cycle modulation technologies. Moreover, this study developed a human&ndash, machine interface using the LabVIEW software, therefore, the laser headlight electrical system can be controlled and monitored by a computer with the controller area network (CAN) bus communication. Finally, the prototype of the laser headlight electrical system was achieved, and three BBLDs were driven, furthermore, the white light of the headlight can be produced by mixing blue laser beams with a yellow fluorescence ceramic wafer.

This research proposed a novel global maximum power point tracking (global-MPPT) algorithm. The proposed algorithm eliminates the perturbation and observation (P&O) technique disturbance problem that the power point will be stuck at the local peak power point under a partial shading condition (PSC). The proposed global-MPPT algorithm detects the photovoltaic module (PV-M) environment irradiance level by the relationship between the output power and voltage of the PV-M. In the proposed algorithm, the important parameter w is determined by the PV-M output power and irradiance level, which is also the compensation parameter that corresponds to the relationship of temperature. The proposed global-MPPT algorithm is aimed to predict the best duty cycle of the global-MPPT based on the irradiance level, parameter w, PV-M output voltage, and load, and then achieve the maximum power point (MPP) quickly and accurately. The measurement results under UIC and PSC verify that the proposed global-MPPT technique performs better than the particle swarm optimization (PSO) and P&O techniques. This research contributes to the proposed method that can find the global-MPP in time based on the irradiance level, temperature, and load.

A method to locate the position of the target vehicle with the aid of infrared signal-direction discrimination for short-range vehicle-to-vehicle communications is proposed in this paper. With the use of two one-dimensional (1-D) signal-direction discriminators mounted on a vehicle with a lateral separation between them to measure the coming directions of the signal emitted from another target vehicle, the position of the target vehicle relative to this detecting vehicle can be located by triangulation. The aforementioned 1-D signal-direction discriminator is composed of two planar receiving modules forming a specific geometric structure, which leads to different responsivities of these individual receiving modules for a signal incident from a definite direction. The coming direction of the signal is determined by comparing the signal strengths received by these individual receiving modules. With a proposed hardware and software implementation, the position of the target vehicle can be accurately determined within a longitudinal range of 50 m. Owing to the restriction of the width of the vehicle, the separation of the signal-direction discriminators mounted on the vehicle cannot exceed 1.8 m. This leads to the consequence that in the remote region any small inaccuracy of the measured signal directions may cause very large position error. However, our measured results reveal a specific characteristic of the distribution of the measured positions for the target vehicle at a definite location. This allows us to design deliberate statistical algorithms to accurately extract the position of the target vehicle in the remote region. Using the simplest statistical algorithm, we are able to locate the position of the target vehicle with acceptable accuracy within a longitudinal range of 80 m. In this paper, we show the feasibility and applicability of this method. Furthermore, improvement is foreseeable with more deliberate design of hardware and software.

A key challenge to model the heat transfer in refractory ceramic foams at high temperature is to characterize properly the transport of thermal radiation, especially when the foams are directly exposed to a high irradiation beam such as concentrated solar radiation. Characterization of the radiation transport in a single strut is representative and fundamental for the radiation transfer modelling of foams. This study numerically investigates the radiation transport and temperature response in a real foam strut under high irradiation beam. The digitalized strut was obtained by the X-ray micro-computed tomography imaging measurements, and then meshed within the strut volume and on the surface. The Discrete Ordinate Method is used to solve the Radiative Transfer Equation, since the strut material (alumina ceramic) is by nature semitransparent for incident radiation, resulting absorbing, scattering and emitting inside the solid phase. The volumetric propagation of radiation intensity is tracked and the absorbed radiation energy is recorded. Besides, the temperature response of the strut irradiated by a beam with periodic heat flux is investigated. The knowledge of radiation transport and temperature response in foam struts can provide fundamental information for understanding the pore-level heat transfer and for developing high-quality simulation and experiments.

In this article, the UXE-Type inverter is considered for eleven-level operation. This topology exhibits a boosting capability along with reduced switches and one source. An algorithm that utilizes the redundant states to control the voltage-balance of the auxiliary direct current (DC)-link is presented. The proposed control algorithm is capable of maintaining the voltages of each capacitor at Vdc/4 resulting in a successful multilevel operation for all values of load. The inverter is also compared with 11-level inverters. The modulation of the inverter is performed by employing nearest level control and ant colony optimization based selective harmonic elimination. The maximum inverter efficiency is 98.1% and its performance is validated on an hardware-in-the-loop platform.

This paper presents three new and improved non-isolated topologies of quadratic boost converters (QBC). Reduced voltage stress across switching devices and high voltage gain with single switch operation are the main advantages of the proposed topologies. These topologies utilize voltage multiplier cells (VMC) made of switched capacitors and switched inductors to increase the converter’s voltage gain. The analysis in continuous conduction mode is discussed in detail. The proposed converter’s voltage gain is higher than the conventional quadratic boost converter, and other recently introduced boost converters. The proposed topologies utilize only a single switch and have continuous input current and low voltage stress across switch, capacitors, and diodes, which leads to the selection of low voltage rating components. The converter’s non-ideal voltage gain is also determined by considering the parasitic capacitance and ON state resistances of switch and diodes. The efficiency analysis incorporating switching and conduction losses of the switching and passive elements is done using PLECS software (Plexim, Zurich, Switzerland). The hardware prototype of the proposed converters is developed and tested for verification.

An interleaved boost dc/dc converter with zero-voltage-transition (ZVT) characteristics is presented in this study. The interleaved approach is used in this presented converter to not only decrease the current stress of the main circuit device but reduce the input ripple current and output capacitor size. Moreover, the presented converter only uses a common ZVT auxiliary circuit for achieving the soft-switching function. Thus, the presented converter can further reduce the size and cost. The ZVT characteristic for active power switches and zero-current transition characteristic for power diodes can be achieved to reduce the switching losses of active power switches and eliminate the reverse recovery losses of power diodes. Objective The net energy requirement for the maintenance (NEm) of broilers was determined using regression models by the indirect calorimetry method (ICM) or the comparative slaughter method (CSM). Methods A 2×4 factorial arrangement of treatments including the evaluation method (ICM or CSM) and feed intake (25%, 50%, 75%, or 100% of ad libitum recommended) was employed in this experiment. In the ICM, 96 male Arbor Acres (AA) birds aged d 15 were used with 4 birds per replicate and 6 replicates in each treatment. In the CSM, 116 male AA birds aged d 15 were used. Among these 116 birds, 20 were selected as for initial data and 96 were assigned to 4 treatments with 6 replicate cages and 4 birds each. The linear regression between retained energy (RE) and metabolizable energy intake (MEI) or the logarithmic regression between heat production (HP) and MEI were used to calculate the metabolizable or net energy requirement for maintenance (MEm) or NEm, respectively. A zero-current transition (ZCT) pulse-width modulation (PWM) interleaved boost power factor correction (PFC) converter with a ZCT auxiliary circuit is presented to achieve ripple current cancelation and ZCT for power switches. The proposed PFC converter adopts a ZCT auxiliary circuit to realise ZCT for power switches and diodes . Thus, the switching losses of active power switches are reduced and the reverse recovery losses of power diodes are eliminated. The interleaved PWM control scheme with constant frequency and constant duty cycle is used in it. Thus, the control circuit is simple and the circuit cost can be reduced. It shapes a close sinusoidal input current waveform, so that an input current waveform with low harmonic can be obtained. The operational principle and design consideration are discussed in detail. Finally, experimental results taken from a 1000 W prototype are presented to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed PFC converter.

This study proposes a dynamic impedance method to estimate the state of charge (SOC) and a projection method to estimate the state of health (SOH) of lithium-ion batteries. We defined changes in voltage over changes in current during charging and discharging processes as the dynamic impedance, which was then used to calculate SOC. The proposed methods do not require initial values, and dynamic impedance provides a more accurate reflection of the electrical characteristics of batteries compared to conventional estimation methods. This approach also enables calculations in real-time. The SOH of batteries degenerates with age, which also alters the characteristics of dynamic impedance. The proposed projection method determines the SOH according to the rate of change in dynamic impedance with respect to the SOC. We also developed a real-time SOC and SOH estimation system, combining a microcontroller and estimation methods with a battery management system (BMS). The BMS retrieves the data required for SOC and SOH estimation and includes various protection mechanisms designed to extend the lifespan of the battery. The hardware structure and the software procedure of the developed system are described in detail. We also present the results of experiments verifying the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed estimation methods.

A novel interleaved boost dc/dc converter with zero-current-switching pulse-width-modulation (ZCS-PWM) characteristic using a simple ZCS-PWM auxiliary circuit is presented in this paper. The proposed converter combines the conventional PWM technique and ZCS technique to promote the circuit performance. The proposed converter uses dual boost converters which are operated at interleaved mode to increase the output power level. Thus, the proposed converter does not only decreases the current stress on main circuit devices but reduces the input ripple current and output capacitor size. Because the proposed converter establishes a common ZCS-PWM auxiliary circuit on used dual boost converters, it can greatly reduce the size and cost. And, it can provide the ZCS characteristic on main switches and auxiliary switches with a wide range of load to improve the problem of switching losses and EMI. Thus, its topology is simple and compact. Besides operating at constant frequency and reducing commutation losses, the proposed converter has no additional current stress and conduction loss in the main switch compared with the conventional interleaved boost dc/dc converter. The principle of operation, theoretical analysis and experimental results of the proposed boost converter, rated 1 kW and operating at 40 kHz, are provided in this paper to verify the performance of this new family of converters.
