18. 4H-SiC Schottky diode arrays for X-ray detection

Abstract

Five SiC Schottky photodiodes for X-ray detection have been electrically characterized at room temperature.\ud One representative diode was also electrically characterized over the temperature range 20°C to 140 °C. The performance at 30 °C of all five X-ray detectors, in both current mode and for photon counting X-ray spectroscopy was investigated. The diodes were fabricated in an array form such that they could be operated as either a 2×2 or 1×3 pixel array. Although the devices showed double barrier heights, high ideality factors and higher than expected leakage current at room temperature (12 nA/cm2 at an internal electric field of 105 kV/ cm), they operated as spectroscopic photon counting soft X-ray detectors uncooled at 30 °C. The measured energy resolution (FWHM at 17.4 keV, Mo Kα) varied from 1.36 to 1.68 keV among different diodes.

Abstract

In the global competitive world swift, reliable and cost effective production subject to uncertain situations, through an appropriate management of the available resources, has turned out to be the necessity for surviving in the market. This inspired the development of the more efficient and robust methods to counteract the existing complexities prevailing in the market. The present paper proposes a hybrid CFGTSA algorithm inheriting the salient features of GA, TS, SA, and chaotic theory to solve the complex scheduling problems commonly faced by most of the manufacturing industries. The proposed CFGTSA algorithm has been tested on a scheduling problem of an automobile industry, and its efficacy has been shown by comparing the results with GA, SA, TS, GTS, and hybrid TSA algorithms.

38. Survival of commercial probiotic strains to pH and bile.

Abstract

This study was performed to enumerate the total viable cell count of probiotic in five brands (A to E) of commercially cultured milk drinks that are available in the Malaysian market as well as to test their tolerance to various pH and bile concentrations by simulating the human gastrointestinal pH and bile concentration. The acid tolerance test was studied under pH 1.5 and 3.0 with 7.2 as control. The cell count for the acid tolerance test was obtained at an interval of 0, 1.5 and 3 hours respectively and was plated onto duplicate MRS agars to be incubated at 37°C for 48 hours. All cells recovered after 3 hours of pH treatment were selected for bile tolerance test in MRS broth containing bile concentrations of 0% (control), 0.3% and 2.0% and cell counts were recorded after 24 hours of incubation. The probiotic strains in products A, B, C & D met the suggested initial count of 10 CFU/ml with brand C recording the highest at 9.19 ± 0.14 log CFU/ml. Strains in product A, B & C showed good tolerance to pH 3.0 and 7.2 recording a count of >106 CFU/ml after 3 hours with a range of 6.60 - 9.04 log CFU/ml. The higher bile concentrations resulted in lower growth of strains in all the brands. Upon pH 1.5 treatment, only brand C recorded growth in all bile concentrations. After pH 3.0 treatment, all brands except brand E met the requirement of survival at 0.3% bile concentration. Results showed probiotics in product A, B & C met the initial count requirement, and exhibited good acid and bile tolerance therefore being a potentially good source of probiotic. 39. A simulation approach for managing manufacturing processes and inbound logistics: a case study

Abstract

This paper presents a case study of using simulation in managing cellular manufacturing process in a Small- and Medium-sized Enterprise (SME). A specific simulation approach, which can facilitate the SME to forecast how to manufacture a new product family in small batch size, was developed. Their competitive edges, which linking up with the dramatic changing market, can be improved without making investment prior to the actual production of the new products and without disturbing real operations. Material flow behaviour, utilisation of resources and manufacturing processes sequences are the criteria that decision makers are seeking for improvement through this study.

40. The regularities of heavy metals and arsenic accumulation in the vegetation of riverside depending on the level of technogenic load

Abstract

The regularities of heavy metals (Fe, Cu, Zn, Cd, Pb) and arsenic accumulation in various types of aquatic vegetation have been studied, depending on the season and the levels of pollution of the Srepok River (Vietnam). It has been found that the concentrations of Fe, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb in all studied areas of the river in the roots of water hyacinth and common reed were higher than those in the stems. It has been shown that the content of toxicants in plants varied widely, depending on the level of pollution in the adjacent area. The maximum concentrations of Cu, Zn and Pb were noted in the organs of the water hyacinth and reeds in the lands within the industrial areas, and the highest levels of As and Cd were noted up the stream, before the river entrance into the industrial area. The content of Fe in all areas remained stable. The difference in heavy metals’ concentrations in plants close to the banks in the provinces and in the middle of the river in most cases was not statistically significant. © 2018, Pharmainfo Publications. Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to analyse how the ecosystem concept can be applied to small businesses and how the Internet and e-commerce can help SMEs harness the required resources to enhance their competitive performance in\ud the marketplace. The chapter will investigate the wide variety of e-commerce applications that are available to small businesses to help address the issue of limited resources. It will provide an ecosystem map illustrating how each functional area of a small business can utilise Internet e-commerce applications to enhance their resource base. The chapter also explores the opportunities and\ud threats that the e-commerce ecosystem model poses for small, medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). This is based upon empirical research consisting of three focus group interviews undertaken with small and medium-sized retail service firms located in the Herefordshire and Worcestershire regions of the United Kingdom in January–February 2014.
