Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with fault detection and isolation (FDI) in complex embedded wired communication networks. The considered faults are soft faults which do not prevent the communication, but may evolve into hard faults, i.e. short or open circuit. A novel FDI method based on power line communication (PLC) transmission systems is proposed. In these PLC systems, the transmission coefficients between the source and each receiver are estimated for communication purposes using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Health indicators and residuals are computed by comparing the online estimated transmission coefficients with the reference coefficients. A methodology for dealing with complex networks, such as bus networks, is proposed. It is based on the decomposition of the network into several Y-shaped sub-networks. Each of these sub-networks is monitored to detect the presence of a fault. The FDI method is first validated using real data extracted from a Y-shaped network test bench. Then, the proposed approach is validated on a more complex network using realistic simulated data.

Abstract: We report first principles numerical discovery of hydrostatic pressure driven tetragonal to collapsed tetragonal transition in 1111-type material ThMnAsN accompanied by simultaneous magneto-structural, insulator to metal transition together with complete collapse of Mn moment. We present detailed evolution of various structural parameters, magnetism and electronic structures of ThMnAsN with increasing hydrostatic pressure. All the structural parameters show anomalies at a critical pressure P$_c \sim$ 9 GPa; c-lattice parameter, out of plane As-As bond length, anion height (h$_{As}$) undergo drastic modification compared to the in-plane parameters which is manifested in an iso-structural phase transition from tetragonal to a collapsed tetragonal (cT) phase. These modifications in "local structural correlations" due to pressure destroys usually localized nature of Mn moments and gets completely quenched. Apart from that the elastic constant, the electronic structures also bear the finger prints of insulator-metal and magneto-structural transition at higher pressures accompanying a total collapse of magnetic moment at the vicinity of 9 GPa. The critical value of the pressure P$_c$ at which tetragonal to collapse tetragonal phase transition occurs, remains robust with respect to the on-site Hubbard correlation (U). The dynamical stability of the compound at higher pressures are affirmed through detailed computations of phonon dispersion curves endowed with positive phonon frequency through out the Brillouin zone. The effect of magnetic spin structure on the electronic band structures are obtained through band unfolding. The electronic structure of ThMnAsN at higher pressures "orbital selectively" influences bands, band gap and closely resembles with the electronic structure of Fe-based superconductors with the occurrences of orbital selective Lifshitz transition., Comment: 13 pages, 21 figures

Abstract: Current quantum systems based on spin qubits are controlled by classical electronics located outside the cryostat at room temperature. This approach creates a major wiring bottleneck, which is one of the main roadblocks toward truly scalable quantum computers. Thus, we propose a scalable memristor-based programmable DC source that could be used to perform biasing of quantum dots inside of the cryostat (i.e. in-situ). This novel cryogenic approach would enable to control the applied voltage on the electrostatic gates by programming the resistance of the memristors, thus storing in the latter the appropriate conditions to form the quantum dots. In this study, we first demonstrate multilevel resistance programming of a TiO2-based memristors at 4.2 K, an essential feature to achieve voltage tunability of the memristor-based DC source. We then report hardwarebased simulations of the electrical performance of the proposed DC source. A cryogenic TiO2-based memristor model fitted on our experimental data at 4.2 K was used to show a 1 V voltage range and 100 uV in-situ memristor-based DC source. Finally, we simulate the biasing of double quantum dots enabling sub-2 minutes in-situ charge stability diagrams. This demonstration is a first step towards more advanced cryogenic applications for resistive memories such as cryogenic control electronics for quantum computers.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we study verifiable sampling from probability distributions in the context of multi-party computation. This has various applications in randomized algorithms performed collaboratively by parties not trusting each other. One example is differentially private machine learning where noise should be drawn, typically from a Laplace or Gaussian distribution, and it is desirable that no party can bias this process. In particular, we propose algorithms to draw random numbers from uniform, Laplace, Gaussian and arbitrary probability distributions, and to verify honest execution of the protocols through zero-knowledge proofs. We propose protocols that result in one party knowing the drawn number and protocols that deliver the drawn random number as a shared secret.

Abstract: preprint: https://doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-1622610/v2; International audience; Sample-return missions allow the study of materials collected directly from celestial bodies, unbiased by atmospheric entry effects and/or terrestrial alteration and contamination phenomena, using state-of-the-art techniques which are available only in a laboratory environment—but only if the collected material stays pristine. The scarcity of outer-space unaltered material recovered until now makes this material extremely precious for the potential scientific insight it can bring. To maximize the scientific output of current and future sample-return missions, the scientific community needs to plan for ways of storing, handling, and measuring this precious material while preserving their pristine state for as long as the ‘invasiveness’ of measurements allows. In July 2021, as part of the Hayabusa2 (JAXA) “Stone” preliminary examination team, we received several microscopic particles from the asteroid Ryugu, with the goal of performing IR hyper-spectral imaging and IR micro-tomography studies. Here, we describe the sample transfer, handling methods and analytical pipeline we implemented to study this very precious material while minimizing and surveilling their alteration history on Earth.

Abstract: International audience; Usually, singularly perturbed models are used to justify the decomposition of the interconnected systems into the Main Dynamics (MD) and the Parasitic Dynamics (PD). In this paper, the effect of a homogeneous PD on the stability of a homogeneous MD, when Homogeneity Degrees (HD) are possibly different, is studied via ISS approach in the framework of singular perturbations. Thus, the possibilities to reduce the order of the interconnected system considering only Reduced-Order Dynamics (ROD) and neglecting PD are examined. Proposed analysis discovers three kinds of stability in the behavior of such an interconnection by assuming that both, ROD and unforced PD, are Globally Asymptotically Stable (GAS). In the first case, when the HD of both systems coincide and the Singular Perturbation Parameter (SPP) is small enough, GAS of the interconnection can be concluded. In the second case, when the HD of ROD is greater, only local stability of interconnection can be ensured. Moreover, proposed approach allows to estimate the domain of attraction for the trajectories of the interconnection as a function of the SPP. In the third case, when the HD of ROD is smaller than the HD of PD, only practical stability can be concluded, and a kind of chattering phenomenon can arise when the HD of ROD is negative. Furthermore, the asymptotic bound of the system's trajectories is also estimated in terms of the SPP.

Abstract: International audience; Electrochemical lithium (de)intercalation in an atomic layer deposited (ALD) TiO2 anatase thin film deposited on a planar Si /Al2O3/Pt substrate is investigated by Raman spectroscopy. An initial discharge capacity of 63 µAh cm−2 µm−1 (0.5 Li+ mole−1) is reached at C/10 rate, which increases up to 77 µAh cm−2 µm−1 upon further cycles. An excellent capacity retention is achieved over at least 100 cycles, showing the good adherence of the ALD thin film. Raman spectra of LixTiO2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) thin film electrodes point to the nucleation of the orthorhombic lithiated titanate (LT) Li0.5TiO2 phase from x = 0.1. This LT phase coexists with tetragonal TiO2 in the 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 composition domain to be pure for x = 0.5. A fully reversible transformation from orthorhombic LT to tetragonal TiO2 is observed upon the charge. The high quality of the Raman spectra allows identifying for the first time 12 modes in the 100–800 cm−1 region for the electrochemically formed LT phase. Furthermore, an appropriate Raman spectra analysis allows a reliable and quantitative determination of the thin film composition during discharge and charge. These results illustrate Raman spectroscopy is a powerful probe to scrutinize the Li insertion/extraction mechanism in TiO2 thin films.

While the former method is useful for stability analysis, the latter approach is more suitable for control synthesis. Abstract: We report a study on the relationship between structure and electron transport properties of nanoscale graphene/pentacene interfaces. We fabricated graphene/pentacene interfaces from 10-30 nm thick needle-like pentacene nanostructures down to two-three layers (2L-3L) dendritic pentacene islands, and we measured their electron transport properties by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). The energy barrier at the interfaces, i.e. the energy position of the pentacene highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) with respect to the Fermi energy of the graphene and the C-AFM metal tip, are determined and discussed with the appropriate electron transport model (double Schottky diode model and Landauer-Buttiker model, respectively) taking into account the voltage-dependent charge doping of graphene. In both types of samples, the energy barrier at the graphene/pentacene interface is slightly larger than that at the pentacene/metal tip interface, resulting in 0.47-0.55 eV and 0.21-0.34 eV, respectively, for the 10-30 nm thick needle-like pentacene islands, and in 0.92-1.44 eV and 0.67-1.05 eV, respectively, for the 2L-3L thick dendritic pentacene nanostructures. We attribute this difference to the molecular organization details of the pentacene/graphene heterostructures, with pentacene molecules lying flat on the graphene in the needle-like pentacene nansotructures, while standing upright in 2L-3L dendritic islands, as observed from Raman spectroscopy., Comment: Paper and its supplementary information

Abstract: International audience; We report on the crystallite growth of nanometric NpO2 and UO2 powders. The AnO2 nanoparticles (An = U and Np) were synthesized by hydrothermal decomposition of the corresponding actinide(IV) oxalates. NpO2 powder was isothermally annealed between 950 °C and 1150 °C and UO2 between 650 °C and 1000 °C. The crystallite growth was then followed by high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD). The activation energies for the growth of crystallites of UO2 and NpO2 were determined to be 264(26) kJ mol−1 and 442(32) kJ mol−1, respectively, with a growth exponent n = 4. The value of the exponent n and the low activation energy suggest that the crystalline growth is rate-controlled by the mobility of the pores, which migrate by atomic diffusion along the pore surfaces. We could thus estimate the cation self-diffusion coefficient along the surface in UO2, NpO2 and PuO2. While data for surface diffusion coefficients for NpO2 and PuO2 are lacking in the literature, the comparison with literature data for UO2 supports further the hypothesis of a surface diffusion controlled growth mechanism.

Abstract: International audience; The systems biology markup language (SBML) permits to represent biological models mixing reaction networks, algebraic equations, differential equations, and events. Its main objective is to exchange biological models between various tools for simulation and analysis. Such tools are, for example, Copasi, BioCham, CellDesigner, as well as more general-purpose languages such as Julia. While an XML schema formally defines the concrete syntax of SBML, there is no formal semantics. This makes it often difficult to understand the models and to design and implement correct and general interfaces from and to SBML, i.e., to use SBML as an exchange formalism for systems biology. In the present paper, we propose Core SBML, a novel language covering a large subset of SBML with clear formal semantics. Besides giving a formal definition, we define an XML syntax for Core SBML by an XML schema. We then present a compiler of a large fragment of SBML to Core SBML. We also distinguish a fragment of Core SBML with a provably correct compiler to BioCham.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the problem of learning Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) with Differential Privacy (DP). We propose a novel differentially private GNN based on Aggregation Perturbation (GAP), which adds stochastic noise to the GNN's aggregation function to statistically obfuscate the presence of a single edge (edge-level privacy) or a single node and all its adjacent edges (node-level privacy). Tailored to the specifics of private learning, GAP's new architecture is composed of three separate modules: (i) the encoder module, where we learn private node embeddings without relying on the edge information; (ii) the aggregation module, where we compute noisy aggregated node embeddings based on the graph structure; and (iii) the classification module, where we train a neural network on the private aggregations for node classification without further querying the graph edges. GAP's major advantage over previous approaches is that it can benefit from multi-hop neighborhood aggregations, and guarantees both edge-level and node-level DP not only for training, but also at inference with no additional costs beyond the training's privacy budget. We analyze GAP's formal privacy guarantees using R\'enyi DP and conduct empirical experiments over three real-world graph datasets. We demonstrate that GAP offers significantly better accuracy-privacy trade-offs than state-of-the-art DP-GNN approaches and naive MLP-based baselines. Abstract: International audience; Quasi-vertical gallium nitride (GaN) Schottky diodes on silicon carbide (SiC) substrates were fabricated for frequency multiplier applications. The epitaxial structure employed had an n− layer of 590 nm with doping 6.6 × 1016 cm−3, while the n+ layer was 950 nm thick, with doping 2 × 1019 cm−3. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) chemical surface treatment before Schottky contact metallization was employed to study its effect in improving the diode parameters. The KOH-treated diode demonstrated a breakdown voltage of − 27.5 V, which is the highest reported for this type of diode. Cut-off frequencies around 500 GHz were obtained at high reverse bias (− 25 V) in spite of high series resistance. The result obtained in breakdown voltage value warrants further research in surface treatment and post-annealing of the Schottky contact optimization in order to decrease the series resistance.

Abstract: International audience; The spread of new strains of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms has led to the urgent need to discover and develop new antimicrobial systems. The antibacterial effects of fatty acids have been well-known and recognized since the first experiments of Robert Koch in 1881, and they are now used in diverse fields. Fatty acids can prevent the growth and directly kill bacteria by insertion into their membrane. For that, a sufficient amount of fatty acid molecules has to be solubilized in water to transfer from the aqueous phase to the cell membrane. Due to conflicting results in the literature and lack of standardization methods, it is very difficult to draw clear conclusions on the antibacterial effect of fatty acids. Most of the current studies link fatty acids' effectiveness against bacteria to their chemical structure, notably the alkyl chain length and the presence of double bonds in their chain. Furthermore, the solubility of fatty acids and their critical aggregation concentration is not only related to their structure, but also influenced by medium conditions (pH, temperature, ionic strength, etc.). There is a possibility that the antibacterial activity of saturated long chain fatty acids (LCFA) may be underestimated due to the lack of water solubility and the use of unsuitable methods to assess their antibacterial activity. Thus, enhancing the solubility of these long chain saturated fatty acids is the main goal before examining their antibacterial properties. To increase their water solubility and thereby improve their antibacterial efficacy, novel alternatives may be considered, including the use of organic positively charged counter-ions instead of the conventional sodium and potassium soaps, the formation of catanionic systems, the mixture with co-surfactants, and solubilization in emulsion systems. This review summarizes the latest findings on fatty acids as antibacterial agents, with a focus on long chain saturated fatty acids. Additionally, it highlights the different ways to improve their water solubility, which may be a crucial factor in increasing their antibacterial efficacy. We finish with a discussion on the challenges, strategies and opportunities for the formulation of LCFAs as antibacterial agents.

Abstract: International audience; This paper is an overview of the EU-funded project TRUMPET (https://trumpetproject.eu/), and gives an outline of its scope and main technical aspects and objectives. In recent years, Federated Learning has emerged as a revolutionary privacy-enhancing technology. However, further research has cast a shadow of doubt on its strength for privacy protection. The goal of TRUMPET is to research and develop novel privacy enhancement methods for Federated Learning, and to deliver a highly scalable Federated AI service platform for researchers, that will enable AI-powered studies of siloed, multi-site, crossdomain, cross-border European datasets with privacy guarantees that follow the requirements of GDPR. Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we introduce a conformal prediction method to construct prediction sets in a oneshot federated learning setting. More specifically, we define a quantile-of-quantiles estimator and prove that for any distribution, it is possible to output prediction sets with desired coverage in only one round of communication. To mitigate privacy issues, we also describe a locally differentially private version of our estimator. Finally, over a wide range of experiments, we show that our method returns prediction sets with coverage and length very similar to those obtained in a centralized setting. Overall, these results demonstrate that our method is particularly well-suited to perform conformal predictions in a one-shot federated learning setting.

Abstract: International audience; This paper contributes to the design of a new finite-time sliding-mode controller for a class of uncertain second-order non-linear systems. The proposed strategy takes into account the design of a family of sliding variables, which establishes a second-order sliding-mode and ensures the convergence of the trajectories of the system to the origin in a finite time and despite the effect of some uncertainties on the system. The straightforward structure of the controller is simple to tune and implement. The global, uniform and finite-time stability of the closed-loop dynamics is demonstrated by means of Lyapunov functions. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed approach is validated through some simulation results.

Abstract: International audience; The methodology of the unit sliding mode control design (known since 1970s) for linear MIMO (Multiply Inputs Multiply Outputs) systems is revised based on the concept of the generalized homogeneity. The conventional restriction about a consistency of the number of control inputs with the dimension of the sliding surface is eliminated. A simple procedure for control parameters tuning is developed. The robustness of the homogeneous unit controller with respect to bounded matched perturbations is proven. The theoretical results are supported by numerical simulations.

A network of strongly connected (linear homogenous) distributed observers are designed under the assumption that each observer can receive a time-varying scalar signal broadcasted by a supervisor. Abstract: International audience; In this work, sub-micron-thick AlN/GaN transistors (HEMTs) grown on a silicon substrate for high-frequency power applications are reported. Using molecular beam epitaxy, an innovative ultrathin step-graded buffer with a total stack thickness of 450 nm enables one to combine an excellent electron confinement, as reflected by the low drain-induced barrier lowering, a low leakage current below 10 µA/mm and low trapping effects up to a drain bias V DS = 30 V while using sub-150 nm gate lengths. As a result, state-of-the-art GaN-on-silicon power performances at 40 GHz have been achieved, showing no degradation after multiple large signal measurements in deep class AB up to V DS = 30 V. Pulsed-mode large-signal characteristics reveal a combination of power-added efficiency (PAE) higher than 35% with a saturated output power density (P OUT) of 2.5 W/mm at V DS = 20 V with a gate-drain distance of 500 nm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of high RF performance achieved with sub-micron-thick GaN HEMTs grown on a silicon substrate.

Abstract: International audience; Graphons are limits of large graphs. Motivated by a theoretical problem from statistical relational learning, we develop a generalization of basic results from graphon theory into the "multi-relational" setting. We show that their multi-relational counterparts, which we call multi-relational graphons, are analogically limits of large multi-relational graphs. We extend the cutdistance topology for graphons to multi-relational graphons and prove its compactness and the density of multi-relational graphs in this topology. In turn, compactness enables to prove the large deviation principle for Multi-Relational Graphs (LDP) which enables to prove the most typical random graphs constrained by marginal statistics converge asymptotically to constrained multirelational graphons with maximum entropy. We show the equivalence between a restricted version of Markov Logic Network and Multi-Relational Graphons with maximum entropy.

Abstract: Upcoming radio interferometers are aiming to image the sky at new levels of resolution and sensitivity, with wide-band image cubes reaching close to the Petabyte scale for SKA. Modern proximal optimization algorithms have shown a potential to significantly outperform CLEAN thanks to their ability to inject complex image models to regularize the inverse problem for image formation from visibility data. They were also shown to be parallelizable over large data volumes thanks to a splitting functionality enabling the decomposition of the data into blocks, for parallel processing of block-specific data-fidelity terms involved in the objective function. Focusing on intensity imaging, the splitting functionality is further exploited in this work to decompose the image cube into spatio-spectral facets, and enable parallel processing of facet-specific regularization terms in the objective function, leading to the "Faceted HyperSARA" algorithm. Reliable heuristics enabling an automatic setting of the regularization parameters involved in the objective are also introduced, based on estimates of the noise level, transferred from the visibility domain to the domains where the regularization is applied. Simulation results based on a MATLAB implementation and involving synthetic image cubes and data close to Gigabyte size confirm that faceting can provide a major increase in parallelization capability when compared to the non-faceted approach (HyperSARA)., To appear in MNRAS

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this article is to detect electron traps in AlInN/GaN transistors operating at room temperature by combining pulsed electrical measurement with photoionization techniques to rapidly assess their activation energies and time constants. In addition, this technique can also reveal the presence of electron traps that cannot be observed by using pulsed measurements alone. Thus, two electron traps were identified including a deep level whose origin could be related to dislocations in the GaN buffer existing in the devices. At the same time, this study has shown that the time constants of these electron traps are inferior to 400 ns and that the electrical behavior of the components is also degraded by the presence of surface states with a time constant of 4 μ s. Moreover, these two traps are at the origin of the gate lag effects observed during the pulsed electrical characterization of the AlInN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs). Likewise, a negative output conductance induced by a trapping effect has been put forward.

Abstract: International audience; This paper proposes a new simplified pointing model as a feedback-based dynamical system, including both human and computer sides of the process. It takes into account the commutation between the correction and ballistic phases in pointing tasks. We use the mouse position increment signal from noisy experimental data to achieve our main objectives: to estimate the model parameters online and predict the task endpoint. Some estimation tools and validation results, applying linear regression techniques on the experimental data are presented. We also compare with a similar prediction algorithm to show the potential of our algorithm's implementation.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we propose an optimization scheme based on a multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (GA) for the design of orthogonal filter banks for speech compression. A parameterization is adopted to assure that the resulting filter banks satisfy perfect reconstruction and have at least two vanishing moments. We search for a parameter set that optimizes the coding gain and the frequency selectivity. As the objectives are conflicting, we investigate the solution that realizes the best compromise between the objectives criteria using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGAIII). Experimental results have shown that the optimized filter banks provide a significant gain in coding performances when comparing with the Daubechies orthogonal filter banks for test speech signals.

Abstract: International audience; A numerical issue arises when we extend the convolutional neural network (CNN) U-net to the anisotropic magnetostatic field computation. The output magnetic field has a significant gradient with respect to the input geometry parameter, which introduces inevitable errors in the training process to degrade the performance of deep learning (DL). To address this issue, the subset selection approach is utilized to divide the whole database into several subsets, where the samples are assigned according to the gradient between the input and output. Then these subsets with different sample densities are combined into a global one. Taking the uniform dataset with the same sample size as a comparison, the influence of subset selection on DL is investigated by comparing the performance of CNN on different datasets. Numerical experiments illustrate that the adaptive subset selection can be employed to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the CNN network.

Abstract: International audience; Makespan minimization in permutation flow-shop scheduling is a well-known hard combinatorial optimization problem. Among the 120 standard benchmark instances proposed by E. Taillard in 1993, 23 have remained unsolved for almost three decades. In this paper, we present our attempts to solve these instances to optimality using parallel Branch-and-Bound (BB) on the GPU-accelerated Jean Zay supercomputer. We report the exact solution of 11 previously unsolved problem instances and improved upper bounds for eight instances. The solution of these problems requires both algorithmic improvements and leveraging the computing power of peta-scale high-performance computing platforms. The challenge consists in efficiently performing parallel depth-first traversal of a highly irregular and fine-grained search tree on distributed systems composed of hundreds of massively parallel accelerator devices and multicore processors. We present and discuss the design and implementation of our permutation-based BB and experimentally evaluate its parallel performance on up to 384 V100 GPUs (2 million CUDA cores) and 3840 CPU cores. The optimality proof for the largest solved instance requires about 64 CPU-years of computation—using 256 GPUs and over 4 million parallel search agents, the traversal of the search tree is completed in 13 hours, exploring 339 × 10$^1$$^2$ nodes.

Abstract: International audience; Cloud applications and cyber-physical systems are becoming increasingly complex, requiring frequent reconfiguration to adapt to changing needs and requirements. Existing approaches compute new valid configurations either at design time, at runtime, or both. However, these approaches can lead to significant computational or validation overheads for each reconfiguration step. We propose a component-based approach that avoids computational and validation overheads using a representation of the set of valid configurations as a variability model. More precisely, our approach leverages feature models to automatically generate, in a component-based formalism called JavaBIP, run-time variability models that respect the feature model constraints. Produced run-time variability models enable control over application reconfiguration by executing reconfiguration requests in such a manner as to ensure the (partial) validity of all reachable configurations. We evaluate our approach on a simple web application deployed on the Heroku cloud platform. Experimental results show that the overheads induced by generated run-time models on systems involving up to 300 features are negligible, demonstrating the practical interest of our approach.

Abstract: International audience; The powerful combination of steady state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) and operando infrared spectroscopy (IR) was applied to study the CO oxidation reaction on Pd-supported Al2O3 catalyst at low temperature. The aim was to reveal the true role of hydrogen‑carbonate species in the reaction mechanism. The SSITKA-IR experiments, conducted in presence and absence of CO2 in the gas feed, have confirmed that hydrogen‑carbonate species behave as spectator species in the reaction. Its formation was due to re-adsorption of the CO2 product itself on the alumina surface as confirmed by the direct 12CO2/13CO2 exchange observed on the bare support.

Abstract: State-of-the-art approaches for training Differentially Private (DP) Deep Neural Networks (DNN) faces difficulties to estimate tight bounds on the sensitivity of the network's layers, and instead rely on a process of per-sample gradient clipping. This clipping process not only biases the direction of gradients but also proves costly both in memory consumption and in computation. To provide sensitivity bounds and bypass the drawbacks of the clipping process, our theoretical analysis of Lipschitz constrained networks reveals an unexplored link between the Lipschitz constant with respect to their input and the one with respect to their parameters. By bounding the Lipschitz constant of each layer with respect to its parameters we guarantee DP training of these networks. This analysis not only allows the computation of the aforementioned sensitivities at scale but also provides leads on to how maximize the gradient-to-noise ratio for fixed privacy guarantees. Abstract: In object-oriented languages, method visibility modifiers hold a key role in separating internal methods from the public API. Protected visibility modifiers offer a way to hide methods from external objects while authorizing internal use and overriding in subclasses. While present in main statically-typed languages, visibility modifiers are not as common or mature in dynamically-typed languages. In this article, we present ProtDyn, a self-send-based visibility model calculated at compile time for dynamically-typed languages relying on name-mangling and syntactic differentiation of self vs non self sends. We present #Pharo, a ProtDyn implementation of this model that is backwards compatible with existing programs, and its port to Python. Using these implementations we study the performance impact of ProtDyn on the method lookup, in the presence of global lookup caches and polymorphic inline caches. We show that our name mangling and double method registration technique has a very low impact on performance and keeps the benefits from the global lookup cache and polymorphic inline cache. We also show that the memory overhead on a real use case is between 2 % and 13 % in the worst-case scenario. Protected modifier semantics enforces encapsulation such as private but allow developers to still extend the class in subclasses. ProtDyn offers a VM-agnostic and backwards-compatible design to introduce protected semantics in dynamically-typed languages.

Abstract: National audience; This poster presents an optimized list decoding solution for videos corrupted by transmission errors. It is based on no-reference image quality assessment using a convolutional neural network (CNN) that effectively handles non-uniform distortions. At the end of a list decoding process, we evaluate the quality of each generated candidate image (without reference) in order to select the best one. When the transmission error occurs in an intra encoded image, our architecture has a decision accuracy of more than 98% against 46% for the original pre-trained CNN architecture. For errors in an inter encoded image, it's 79% versus 33%.; Cet poster présente une solution de décodage par liste optimisée pour des vidéos corrompues par des erreurs de transmission. Elle est basée sur l'évaluation de la qualité des images sans référence utilisant un réseau de neurones convolutif (CNN) qui gère efficacement les distorsions non uniformes. À l'issue d'un processus de décodage par liste, nous évaluons la qualité de chaque image candidate générée (sans référence) afin de sélectionner la meilleure. The efficiency of this approach is assessed by exhaustively optimizing a configurable system, and by analyzing how the algorithm navigates through the configuration space. This approach proves especially efficient at optimizing configurations through a minimal number of changes, thus limiting the impact on their functional behavior.

Abstract: The stability and accuracy of atomic devices can be degraded by the evolution of their cell inner atmosphere. Hence, the undesired entrance or leakage of background or buffer gas, respectively, that can permeate through the cell walls, should be slowed down. In this work, we investigate helium permeation in microfabricated alkali vapor cells filled with He and whose windows are made of borosilicate glass (BSG) or aluminosilicate glass (ASG). The permeation is then derived from routine measurements of the pressure-shifted hyperfine transition frequency of an atomic clock. We first confirm that ASG reduces He permeation rate by more than two orders of magnitude, in comparison with BSG. In addition, we demonstrate that Al$_2$O$_3$ thin-film coatings, known to avoid alkali consumption in vapor cells, can also significantly reduce He permeation. The permeation through BSG is thereby reduced by a factor 110 whereas the one through ASG is decreased by a factor up to 5.8 compared to uncoated substrates. These results may contribute to the development of miniaturized atomic clocks and sensors with improved long-term stability or sensitivity., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Cependant, les jeux de données actuels se concentrent uniquement sur les tâches traditionnelles de RI ad hoc ou sur les tâches de clarification de la requête. Pour combler cette lacune, nous proposons une méthodologie pour construire automatiquement des ensembles de données de RI conversationnelle à grande échelle à partir d'ensembles de données de RI ad hoc afin de faciliter les explorations sur la RI conversationnelle. Nous effectuons une évaluation approfondie montrant la qualité et la pertinence des interactions générées pour chaque requête initiale. Cet article montre la faisabilité et l'utilité de l'augmentation des ensembles de données de RI ad-hoc pour la RI conversationnelle.

Abstract: International audience; The environmental footprint of a software service development may be impacted by several factors, spanning human factors to infrastructure choices. To the best of our knowledge, the state of the art in the domain of environmental footprint fails i) to address the full spectrum of software services life cycle, from design to operation and maintenance and ii) to cover different categories of impacts. In this paper, we therefore introduce a methodology and the associated model to guide the software development ecosystem and their stakeholders in estimating the environmental footprint of their projects along multiple impact categories. This holistic approach delivers actionable insights to identify potential shifting between phases, such as development and usage, but also hotspots among resources consumed to produce and operate software services. We report on a sample case study that emphasizes the importance of development impact on a software life cycle and shows the relative importance of phases, as well as resources consumed.

Abstract: This paper introduces a novel compatibility attack to detect a steganographic message embedded in the DCT domain of a JPEG image at high-quality factors (close to 100). Because the JPEG compression is not a surjective function, i.e. not every DCT blocks can be mapped from a pixel block, embedding a message in the DCT domain can create incompatible blocks. We propose a method to find such a block, which directly proves that a block has been modified during the embedding. This theoretical method provides many advantages such as being completely independent to Cover Source Mismatch, having good detection power, and perfect reliability since false alarms are impossible as soon as incompatible blocks are found. We show that finding an incompatible block is equivalent to proving the infeasibility of an Integer Linear Programming problem. However, solving such a problem requires considerable computational power and has not been reached for 8x8 blocks. Abstract: International audience; AbstractThe fast growth of railway transport pushed by its sustainability requires all railway stakeholders to work together to minimise any possible drawbacks that might slow down this positive trend. Among these, the induced vibrations generated at the wheel–rail interaction during train passage are the most significant, especially in urban areas where in the form of ground-borne vibrations and/or noise negatively affects the daily life of the residents. In this direction, the innovative concept of seismic metamaterial can enhance the vibration attenuation levels of existing mitigation measures and, at the same time, ensure a straightforward application in the railway environment. This paper uses a combined vehicle/track/soil prediction dynamic model of the T2000 LRV (Light Rail Vehicle) tram operating in Brussels, based on a two-step approach already validated in the past, to analyse the effects that the inclusion of seismic metamaterials within the transmission path has in terms of vibration attenuation. In particular, a four-by-four group of piles is examined with different material proprieties for the inclusions, considering a range of velocities and distances from the track in order to quantify the achievable Insertion Loss (IL) for each configuration depending on the distances and the tram speed, attaining ILs up to 10 [dB]. The study is then extended to other possible arrangements of the group of piles, providing a direct relationship between the repetitiveness of each row of the primitive unit cell of the metamaterial and the gained levels of attenuation, in order to give a base for the costs of this type of mitigation measure. Furthermore, the influence on the attenuation levels of the soil characteristics, is evaluated by considering an ideal uniform underground, extending the IL to 18 [dB] in the case of steel inclusion. Finally, the paper gives insights into the use of metamaterials as mitigation measures for railway-induced vibration in order to understand and evaluate the potential of this novel concept and its benefits.

Abstract: International audience; Colored Picosecond Acoustics (CPA) and Spectroscopic Ellipsometry (SE) are combined to measure elastic and thermoelastic properties of polymer thin-film resins deposited on 300 mm wafers. Film thickness and refractive index are measured using SE. Sound velocity and thickness are measured using CPA from the refractive index. Comparing the two thicknesses allows checking consistency between both approaches. The same combination is then applied at various temperatures from 19 • to 180 • C. As the sample is heated, both thickness and sound velocity change. By monitoring these contributions separately, the Temperature Coefficient on sound Velocity (TCV) and the Coefficient on Thermal Expansion are deduced. The protocol is applied to five industrial samples made of different thin-film resins currently used by microelectronic industry. Young's modulus varies from resin to resin by up to 20%. TCV is large on each resin and varies from one resin to another up to 57%.

Abstract: Lexical Semantic Change is the study of how the meaning of words evolves through time. Another related question is whether and how lexical relations over pairs of words, such as synonymy, change over time. There are currently two competing, apparently opposite hypotheses in the historical linguistic literature regarding how synonymous words evolve: the Law of Differentiation (LD) argues that synonyms tend to take on different meanings over time, whereas the Law of Parallel Change (LPC) claims that synonyms tend to undergo the same semantic change and therefore remain synonyms. So far, there has been little research using distributional models to assess to what extent these laws apply on historical corpora. In this work, we take a first step toward detecting whether LD or LPC operates for given word pairs. After recasting the problem into a more tractable task, we combine two linguistic resources to propose the first complete evaluation framework on this problem and provide empirical evidence in favor of a dominance of LD. We then propose various computational approaches to the problem using Distributional Semantic Models and grounded in recent literature on Lexical Semantic Change detection. Our best approaches achieve a balanced accuracy above 0.6 on our dataset. Abstract: International audience; Skin effect is one of the intriguing phenomena exhibited by non-Hermitian wave systems. It reflects the localization of the modes at the boundaries of the structure. We demonstrated the skin effect for elastic waves propagating in a non-Hermitian phononic plate containing piezoelectric components in their unit cells. The latter behave as sensors and actuators by using the direct and inverse piezoelectric effects. The demonstration is based on the calculation of the complex non-reciprocal dispersion curves and their analysis for any direction of the wavevector in the two-dimensional space. Therefore, localization phenomena at different boundaries and corners of a finite square structure are presented. Furthermore, by applying different levels of non-Hermiticity in different parts of a square structure, it is shown that the localized features can appear at different positions and with various shapes. These localized phenomena can be reconfigured by acting on the non-Hermiticity parameters. Our results provided a feedback control strategy to introduce the non-Hermitian skin effect in two-dimensional elastic systems for potential applications, such as vibration control, energy harvesting, and sensing.
