Search

InSb nanoflags, due to their intrinsic spin-orbit interactions, are an interesting platform in the study of planar Josephson junctions. Ballistic transport, combined with high transparency of the superconductor/semiconductor interfaces, was reported to lead to interesting phenomena such as the Josephson diode effect. The versatility offered by the planar geometry can be exploited to manipulate both carrier concentration and spin-orbit strength by electrical means. Here we present experimental results on InSb nanoflag-based Josephson junctions fabricated with side-gates placed in close proximity to the junction. We show that side-gates can efficiently modulate the current through the junction, both in the dissipative and in the dissipation-less regimes, similarly to what obtained with a conventional back-gate. Furthermore, the side-gates can be used to influence the Fraunhofer interference pattern induced by the presence of an external out-of-plane magnetic field.

Fluctuations affect the functionality of nanodevices. Thermodynamic uncertainty relations (TURs), derived within the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, show that a minimal amount of dissipation is required to obtain a given relative energy current dispersion, that is, current precision has a thermodynamic cost. It is therefore of great interest to explore the possibility that TURs are violated, particularly for quantum systems, leading to accurate currents at lower cost. Here, we show that two quantum harmonic oscillators are synchronized by coupling to a common thermal environment, at strong dissipation and low temperature. In this regime, periodically modulated couplings to a second thermal reservoir, breaking time-reversal symmetry and taking advantage of non-Markovianity of this latter reservoir, lead to strong violation of TURs for local work currents, while maintaining finite output power. The simultaneous breaking of time-reversal and inversion symmetry can lead to peculiar effects in Josephson junctions, such as the anomalous Josephson effect or supercurrent rectification, which is a dissipationless analog of the diode effect. Due to their impact in new quantum technologies, it is important to find robust platforms and external means to manipulate the above effects in a controlled way. Here, we theoretically consider a Josephson junction based on a quantum spin Hall system as the normal channel, subjected to a magnetic field in the direction defined by spin-momentum locking, and in presence of a local tip in close proximity to one of the metallic edges in the normal region. We consider different local perturbations, model normal and magnetic tips, and study how they affect the Josephson response of the device. Do quantum correlations lead to better performance with respect to several different systems working independently? For quantum thermal machines, the question is whether a working medium (WM) made of $N$ constituents exhibits better performance than $N$ independent engines working in parallel. Here, by inspecting a microscopic model with the WM composed by two non-interacting quantum harmonic oscillators, we show that the presence of a common environment can mediate non-trivial correlations in the WM leading to better quantum heat engine performance -- maximum power and efficiency -- with respect to an independent configuration. Furthermore, this advantage is striking for strong dissipation, a regime in which two independent engines cannot deliver any useful power. We investigate nonequilibrium effects in the transport of interacting electrons in quantum conductors, proposing the nonlocal thermoelectric response as a direct indicator of the presence of interactions, nonthermal states and the effect of correlations. This is done by assuming a quantum Hall setup where two channels (connected to reservoirs at different temperatures) co-propagate for a finite distance, such that a thermoelectrical response is only expected if the electron-electron interaction mediates heat exchange between the channels. This way, the nonlocal Seebeck response measures the interaction strength. Considering zero-range interactions, we solve the charge and energy currents and noises of a non-equilibrium integrable interacting system, determining the universal interaction-dependent length scale of energy equilibration. The coherent energy transfer between two identical two-level systems is investigated. Here, the first quantum system plays the role of a charger, while the second can be seen as a quantum battery. Firstly, a direct energy transfer between the two objects is considered and then compared to a transfer mediated by an additional intermediate two-level system. In this latter case, it is possible to distinguish between a two-step process, where the energy is firstly transferred from the charger to the mediator and only after from the mediator to the battery, and a single-step in which the two transfers occurs simultaneously. The quasicharge superconducting qubit realizes the dual of the transmon and shows strong robustness to flux and charge fluctuations thanks to a very large inductance closed on a Josephson junction. At the same time, a weak anharmonicity of the spectrum is inherited from the parent transmon, that introduces leakage errors and is prone to frequency crowding in multi-qubit setups. We propose a novel design that employs a quartic superinductor and confers a good degree of anharmonicity to the spectrum. The quartic regime is achieved through a properly designed chain of Josephson junction loops that shows minimal quantum fluctuations without introducing a severe dependence on the external fluxes., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

In the quest for high-performance quantum thermal machines, looking for an optimal thermodynamic efficiency is only part of the issue. Indeed, at the level of quantum devices, fluctuations become extremely relevant and need to be taken into account. In this paper we study the thermodynamic uncertainty relations for a quantum thermal machine with a quantum harmonic oscillator as a working medium, connected to two thermal baths, one of which is dynamically coupled. We investigate a ballistic InSb nanoflag-based Josephson junction with Nb superconducting contacts. The high transparency of the superconductor-semiconductor interfaces enables the exploration of quantum transport with parallel short and long conducting channels. Under microwave irradiation, we observe half-integer Shapiro steps that are robust to temperature, suggesting their possible non-equilibrium origin. Understanding the mechanisms underlying many-body quantum chaos is one of the big challenges in theoretical physics. We tackle this problem by considering a set of perturbed quadratic Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) Hamiltonians defined on graphs. This allows to disambiguate between operator growth and \emph{delocalization}, showing that the latter is the dominant process in the single-particle to many-body chaotic transition. Our results are verified numerically with state-of-the-art numerical techniques, capable of extracting eigenvalues in a desired energy window of very large Hamiltonians, in this case up to dimension $2^{19}\times 2^{19}$. Quantum thermal machines can perform useful tasks, such as delivering power, cooling, or heating. In this work, we consider hybrid thermal machines, that can execute more than one task simultaneously. We characterize and find optimal working conditions for a three-terminal quantum thermal machine, where the working medium is a quantum harmonic oscillator, coupled to three heat baths, with two of the couplings driven periodically in time. We show that it is possible to operate the thermal machine efficiently, in both pure and hybrid modes, and to switch between different operational modes simply by changing the driving frequency. Moreover, the proposed setup can also be used as a high-performance transistor, in terms of output--to--input signal and differential gain. We consider a micromaser model of a quantum battery, where the battery is a single mode of the electromagnetic field in a cavity, charged via repeated interactions with a stream of qubits, all prepared in the same non-equilibrium state, either incoherent or coherent, with the matter-field interaction modeled by the Jaynes-Cummings model. We show that the coherent protocol is superior to the incoherent one, in that an effective pure steady state is achieved for generic values of the model parameters. Finally, we supplement the above collision model with cavity losses, described by a Lindblad master equation. We show that battery performances, in terms of stored energy, charging power, and steady-state purity, are slightly degraded up to moderated dissipation rate. Topological quantum computation relies on a protected degenerate subspace enabling complicated operations in a noise-resilient way. To this end, hybrid platforms based on non-Abelian quasiparticles such as parafermions hold great promise. These are predicted to emerge at the interface between fractional quantum Hall states and superconductors and therefore naturally couple to superconducting qubits. Here, we study a parafermionic fluxonium circuit and show that the presence of topological states yields a striking periodicity in the qubit spectrum. In addition, peculiar and marked signatures of different parafermion coupling, associated with multiple tunneling of fractional quasiparticles, can be detected in the qubit microwave spectrum. Finite parafermion coupling can reduce the full degeneracy of the non-Abelian manifold, and we show that this configuration can be used to assess the remaining degree of protection of the system., Comment: 7 (+5) pages, 3 (+4) figures

Great interest revolves around the development of new strategies to efficiently store and manipulate quantum information in a robust and decoherence-free fashion. Several proposals have been put forward to encode information into qubits that are simultaneously insensitive to relaxation and to dephasing processes. Among all, given their versatility and high degree of control, superconducting qubits have been largely investigated in this direction. Here, we present a survey on the basic concepts and ideas behind the implementation of novel superconducting circuits with intrinsic protection against decoherence at a hardware level. In particular, the main focus is on multi-mode superconducting circuits, the paradigmatic example being the so-called $0-\pi$ circuit. We report evidence of non-reciprocal dissipation-less transport in single ballistic InSb nanoflag Josephson junctions, owing to a strong spin-orbit coupling. Applying an in-plane magnetic field, we observe an inequality in supercurrent for the two opposite current propagation directions. This demonstrates that these devices can work as Josephson diodes, with dissipation-less current flowing in only one direction. For small fields, the supercurrent asymmetry increases linearly with the external field, then it saturates as the Zeeman energy becomes relevant, before it finally decreases to zero at higher fields. We show that the effect is maximum when the in-plane field is perpendicular to the current vector, which identifies Rashba spin-orbit coupling as the main symmetry-breaking mechanism. While a variation in carrier concentration in these high-quality InSb nanoflags does not significantly influence the diode effect, it is instead strongly suppressed by an increase in temperature. Our experimental findings are consistent with a model for ballistic short junctions and show that the diode effect is intrinsic to this material. Our results establish InSb Josephson diodes as a useful element in superconducting electronics.

We discuss whether, and under which conditions, it is possible to realize a heat engine simply by dynamically modulating the couplings between the quantum working medium and thermal reservoirs. For that purpose, we consider the paradigmatic model of a quantum harmonic oscillator, exposed to a minimal modulation, that is, a monochromatic driving of the coupling to only one of the thermal baths. We demonstrate, at any order in the system/bath coupling strength, that in this setup non--Markovianity of the bath is a necessary condition to obtain a heat engine. In addition, we identify suitable structured environments for the engine to approach the ideal Carnot efficiency. Majorana bound states in topological superconductors have attracted intense research activity in view of applications in topological quantum computation. However, they are not the only example of topological bound states that can occur in such systems. We here study a model in which both Majorana and Tamm bound states compete. We show both numerically and analytically that, surprisingly, the Tamm state remains partially localized even when the spectrum becomes gapless. Despite this fact, we demonstrate that the Majorana polarization shows a clear transition between the two regimes.

We investigate the coherent energy transfer between two quantum systems mediated by a quantum bus. In particular, we consider the energy transfer process between two qubits, and how it can be influenced by using a third qubit or photons in a resonant cavity as mediators. Inspecting different figures of merit and considering both on and off-resonance configurations, we characterize the energy transfer performances. We show that, while the qubit-mediated transfer shows no advantages with respect to a direct coupling case, the cavity-mediated one is progressively more and more efficient as function of the number of photons stored in the cavity that acts as a quantum bus. High-quality III-V narrow band gap semiconductor materials with strong spin-orbit coupling and large Lande g-factor provide a promising platform for next-generation applications in the field of high-speed electronics, spintronics, and quantum computing. Indium Antimonide (InSb) offers a narrow band gap, high carrier mobility, and a small effective mass, and thus is very appealing in this context. In fact, this material has attracted tremendous attention in recent years for the implementation of topological superconducting states supporting Majorana zero modes. However, high-quality heteroepitaxial two-dimensional (2D) InSb layers are very diffcult to realize owing to the large lattice mismatch with all commonly available semiconductor substrates. An alternative pathway is the growth of free-standing single-crystalline 2D InSb nanostructures, the so-called nanoflags. Here we demonstrate fabrication of ballistic Josephson-junction devices based on InSb nanoflags with Ti/Nb contacts that show gate-tunable proximity-induced supercurrent up to 50 nA at 250 mK and a sizable excess current. The devices show clear signatures of subharmonic gap structures, indicating phase-coherent transport in the junction and a high transparency of the interfaces. This places InSb nanoflags in the spotlight as a versatile and convenient 2D platform for advanced quantum technologies.

Setting up strong Josephson coupling in van der Waals materials in close proximity to superconductors offers several opportunities both to inspect fundamental physics and to develop novel cryogenic quantum technologies. Here we show evidence of Josephson coupling in a planar few-layer black Phosphorus junction. The planar geometry allows us to probe the junction behavior by means of external gates, at different carrier concentrations. Clear signatures of Josephson coupling are demonstrated by measuring supercurrent flow through the junction at milli Kelvin temperatures. Manifestation of Fraunhofer pattern with a transverse magnetic field is also reported, confirming the Josephson coupling. These findings represent the first evidence of proximity Josephson coupling in a planar junction based on a van der Waals material beyond graphene and open the way to new studies, exploiting the peculiar properties of exfoliated black phosphorus thin flakes.

The quantum Hall (QH) effect represents a unique playground where quantum coherence of electrons can be exploited for various applications, from metrology to quantum computation. In the fractional regime it also hosts anyons, emergent quasiparticles that are neither bosons nor fermions and possess fractional statistics. Their detection and manipulation represent key milestones in view of topologically protected quantum computation schemes. Exploiting the high degree of phase coherence, edge states in the QH regime have been investigated by designing and constructing electronic interferometers, able to reveal the coherence and statistical properties of the interfering constituents. Here, we review the two main geometries developed in the QH regime, the Mach-Zehnder and the Fabry-Perot interferometers. We present their basic working principles, fabrication methods, and the main results obtained both in the integer and fractional QH regime. We will also show how recent technological advances led to the direct experimental demonstration of fractional statistics for Laughlin quasiparticles in a Fabry-Perot interferometric setup., Comment: 43 pages one column, 9 figures

Describing the thermodynamic properties of quantum systems far from equilibrium is challenging, in particular when the system is strongly coupled to its environment, or when memory effects cannot be neglected. Here, we address such regimes when the system-baths couplings are periodically modulated in time. We show that the couplings modulation, usually associated to a purely dissipative effect when done nonadiabatically, can be suitably engineered to perform thermodynamic tasks. In particular, asymmetric couplings to two heat baths can be used to extract heat from the cold reservoir and to realize an ideal heat rectifier, where the heat current can be blocked either in the forward or in the reverse configuration by simply tuning the frequency of the couplings modulation. Interestingly, both effects take place in the low-temperature, quantum non Markovian regime. In the context of one-dimensional fermionic systems, helical Luttiger liquids are not only characterized by intriguing spin properties, but also by the possibility to be manipulated by means of electrostatic gates, exploiting finite Rashba coupling. We use this property to show that a heterostructure composed of a helical Luttinger liquid, contacted to two metallic leads and supplemented by top gates, can be used as a tunable thermal valve. By relying on bosonization techniques and scattering of plasmonic modes, we investigate the performance of this valve with respect to electron-electron interactions, temperature, and properties of the gates. The maximal modulation of the thermal conductance that the proposed device can achieve is, for experimentally relevant parameters, around $7 \%$. Such variation can be both positive or negative. Moreover, a modification in the geometry of the gate can lead to particular temperature dependencies related to interference effects. We consider a quantum battery that is based on a two-level system coupled with a cavity radiation by means of a two-photon interaction. Various figures of merit, such as stored energy, average charging power, energy fluctuations, and extractable work are investigated, considering, as possible initial conditions for the cavity, a Fock state, a coherent state, and a squeezed state. We show that the first state leads to better performances for the battery. However, a coherent state with the same average number of photons, even if it is affected by stronger fluctuations in the stored energy, results in quite interesting performance, in particular since it allows for almost completely extracting the stored energy as usable work at short enough times., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures

The thermoelectric performance of a topological Josephson nonlocal heat engine is thoroughly investigated. The nonlocal response is obtained by using a normal metal probe coupled with only one of the proximized helical edges in the middle of the junction. In this configuration, we investigate how the flux bias and the phase bias trigger the nonlocal thermoelectric effects under the application of a thermal difference between the superconducting terminals. Possible experimental nonidealities such as asymmetric proximized superconducting gaps are considered showing how the nonlocal response can be affected. The interplay between Doppler-shift, which tends to close gaps, and Andreev interferometry, which affects particle-hole resonant transport, are clearly identified for different operating regimes. Finally, we discuss the power and the efficiency of the topological thermoelectric engine which reaches maximum power at maximal efficiency for a well coupled normal probe. We find quite high nonlocal Seebeck coefficient of the order of tenths of $\mu$V/K at a few kelvin, a signal that would be clearly detectable also against any spurious local effect even with moderate asymmetry of the gaps.

Josephson junctions in two-dimensional topological insulators with embedded magnetic domains can host a number of topological phases, in particular, Jackiw-Rebbi solitons and Majorana zero modes. These different non-trivial phases appear in such junctions for multiple-domain magnetic islands, showing a rich multi-gap structure. Features related to the interplay between superconductivity and magnetism in these systems cannot be easily discerned looking at behavior of the Andreev spectrum and the concomitant dc Josephson effect. Instead, the thermal conductance is very sensitive to the nature of the junction and the domain structure of the magnetic island. We present a detailed analysis of these properties in the case of a topological Josephson junction with a single and two-domain magnetic island. Configurations hosting soliton magnetic modes lead to a peculiar behavior of the thermal conductance relative to the thermal quantum, characterized by a negative slope as a function of the temperature, just above the superconducting critical temperature. At low temperatures, these junctions also show characteristic coherence patters in the behavior of the thermal conductance as function of the Josephson phase bias and the angle between the magnetizations of the domains., Comment: 13 pages with references, 11 figures, second version

The electron gas hosted in a two-dimensional solid-state matrix, such as a quantum well or a two-dimensional van der Waals heterostructure, supports the propagation of plasma waves. Nonlinear interactions between plasma waves, due to charge conservation and current convection, generate a constant density gradient which can be detected as a dc potential signal at the boundaries of the system. This phenomenon is at the heart of a plasma-wave photodetection scheme which was first introduced by Dyakonov and Shur for electronic systems with a parabolic dispersion and then extended to the massless Dirac fermions in graphene. In this work, we develop the theory of plasma-wave photodetection in bilayer graphene, which has the peculiarity that the dispersion relation depends locally and dynamically on the intensity of the plasma wave. In our analysis, we show how quantum capacitance effects, arising from the local fluctuations of the electronic dispersion, modify the intensity of the photodetection signal. An external electrical bias, e.g. induced by top and bottom gates, can be used to control the strength of the quantum capacitance corrections, and thus the photoresponse., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures

Starting with Carnot engine, the ideal efficiency of a heat engine has been associated with quasi-static transformations and vanishingly small output power. Here, we exactly calculate the thermodynamic properties of a isothermal heat engine, in which the working medium is a periodically driven underdamped harmonic oscillator, focusing instead on the opposite, anti-adiabatic limit, where the period of a cycle is the fastest time scale in the problem. We show that in that limit it is possible to approach the ideal energy conversion efficiency $\eta=1$, with finite output power and vanishingly small relative power fluctuations. The simultaneous realization of all the three desiderata of a heat engine is possible thanks to the breaking of time-reversal symmetry. We also show that non-Markovian dynamics can further improve the power-efficiency trade-off.

We consider a collection of two level systems, such as qubits, embedded into a microwave cavity as a promising candidate for the realization of high power quantum batteries. In this perspective, the possibility to design devices where the conventional single-photon coupling is suppressed and the dominant interaction is mediated by two-photon processes is investigated, opening the way to an even further enhancement of the charging performance. By solving a Dicke model with both single- and two-photon coupling we determine the range of parameters where the latter unconventional interaction dominates the dynamics of the system leading to better performances both in the charging times and average charging power of the QB compared to the single-photon case. In addition, the scaling of the maximum stored energy, fluctuations and charging power with the finite number of qubits N is inspected. While the energy and fluctuations scale linearly with N, the quadratic growth of the average power leads to a relevant improvement of the charging performance of quantum batteries based on this scheme with respect to the purely single-photon coupling case. We discuss the phase dependent nonlocal thermoelectric effect in a topological Josephson junction in contact with a normal-metal probe. We show that, due to the helical nature of topological edge states, nonlocal thermoelectricity is generated by a purely Andreev interferometric mechanism. This response can be tuned by imposing a Josephson phase difference, through the application of a dissipationless current between the two superconductors, even without the need of applying an external magnetic field. We discuss in detail the origin of this effect and we provide also a realistic estimation of the nonlocal Seebeck coefficient that results of the order of few $\mu V/K$.

We study non-equilibrium dynamics induced by a sudden quench of strongly correlated Hamiltonians with all-to-all interactions. By relying on a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) based quench protocol, we show that the time evolution of simple spin-spin correlation functions is highly sensitive to the degree of locality of the corresponding operators, once an appropriate set of fundamental fields is identified. By tracking the time-evolution of specific spin-spin correlation functions and their decay, we argue that it is possible to distinguish between operator hopping and operator growth dynamics; the latter being a hallmark of quantum chaos in many-body quantum systems. Coupling with an external environment inevitably affects the dynamics of a quantum system. Here, we consider how charging performances of a quantum battery, modelled as a two level system, are influenced by the presence of an Ohmic thermal reservoir. The latter is coupled to both longitudinal and transverse spin components of the quantum battery including decoherence and pure dephasing mechanisms. Charging and discharging dynamics of the quantum battery, subjected to a static driving, are obtained exploiting a proper mapping into the so-called spin-boson model. Analytic expressions for the time evolution of the energy stored in the weak coupling regime are presented relying on a systematic weak damping expansion. Here, decoherence and pure dephasing dissipative coupling are discussed in details. We argue that the former results in better charging performances, showing also interesting features reminiscent of the Lamb shift level splitting renormalization induced by the presence of the reservoir. Charging stability is also addressed, by monitoring the energy behaviour after the charging protocol has been switched off. In this paper we develop the theory for 2D-to-2D tunneling spectroscopy aided by magnetic or quantum-order excitations, and apply it to the description of van-der-Waals heterostructures of graphene/ultrathin $\alpha-{\rm RuCl}_3$. We study the behavior of both the differential conductance and the inelastic electron tunneling spectrum (IETS) of these heterostructures. The IETS in particular exhibits features, such as the gap of continuum spinon excitations and Majorana bound states, whose energies scale {\it cubicly} with the applied magnetic field. Such scaling, which exists for a relatively wide range of fields, is at odds with the linear one exhibited by conventional magnons and can be used to prove the existence of Kitaev quantum spin liquids., Comment: 13 pages main, 13 pages appendices, 9 figures

The exactly-solvable Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model has recently received considerable attention in both condensed matter and high energy physics because it describes quantum matter without quasiparticles, while being at the same time the holographic dual of a quantum black hole. In this Letter, we examine SYK-based charging protocols of quantum batteries with N quantum cells. Extensive numerical calculations based on exact diagonalization for N up to 16 strongly suggest that the optimal charging power of our SYK quantum batteries displays a super-extensive scaling with N that stems from genuine quantum mechanical effects. While the complexity of the nonequilibrium SYK problem involved in the charging dynamics prevents us from an analytical proof, we believe that this Letter offers the first (to the best of our knowledge) strong numerical evidence of a quantum advantage occurring due to the maximally-entangling underlying quantum dynamics., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures. Collective behavior strongly influences the charging dynamics of quantum batteries (QBs). Here, we study the impact of nonlocal correlations on the energy stored in a system of $N$ QBs. A unitary charging protocol based on a Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) quench Hamiltonian is thus introduced and analyzed. SYK models describe strongly interacting systems with nonlocal correlations and fast thermalization properties. Here, we demonstrate that, once charged, the average energy stored in the QB is very stable, realizing an ultraprecise charging protocol. By studying fluctuations of the average energy stored, we show that temporal fluctuations are strongly suppressed by the presence of nonlocal correlations at all time scales. A comparison with other paradigmatic examples of many-body QBs shows that this is linked to the collective dynamics of the SYK model and its high level of entanglement. We argue that such feature relies on the fast scrambling property of the SYK Hamiltonian, and on its fast thermalization properties, promoting this as an ideal model for the ultimate temporal stability of a generic QB. We consider a Josephson junction hosting a Kramers pair of helical edge states of a quantum spin Hall bar in contact with a normal-metal probe. In this hybrid system, the orbital phase induced by a small magnetic field threading the junction known as Doppler shift (DS), combines with the conventional Josephson phase difference and originates an effect akin to a Zeeman field in the spectrum. As a consequence, when a temperature bias is applied to the superconducting terminals, a thermoelectric current is established in the normal probe. We argue that this purely non-local thermoelectric effect is a unique signature of the helical nature of the edge states coupled to superconducting leads and it can constitute a useful tool for probing the helical nature of the edge states in systems where the Hall bar configuration is difficult to achieve. We fully characterize thermoelectric response and performance of this hybrid junction in a wide range of parameters, demonstrating that the external magnetic flux inducing the DS can be used as a knob to control the thermoelectric response and the heat flow in a novel device based on topological junctions.

We consider transport properties of a single edge of a two-dimensional topological insulators, in presence of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, driven by two external time-dependent voltages and connected to a thin superconductor. We focus on the case of a train of Lorentzian-shaped pulses, which are known to generate coherent single-electron excitations in two-dimensional electron gas, and prove that they are minimal excitations for charge transport also in helical edge states, even in the presence of spin-orbit interaction. Importantly, these properties of Lorentzian-shaped pulses can be tested computing charge noise generated by the scattering of particles at the thin superconductor. This represents a novel setup where electron quantum optics experiments with helical states can be implemented, with the superconducting contact as an effective beamsplitter. By elaborating on this configuration, we also evaluate charge noise in a collisional Hong-Ou-Mandel configuration, showing that, due to the peculiar effects induced by Rashba interaction, a non-vanishing dip at zero delay appears., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

Hybrid superconductor/semiconductor devices constitute a powerful platform to investigate the emergence of new topological state of matter. Among all possible semiconductor materials, InAs represents a promising choice, owing to its high quality, large g-factor and spin-orbit component. Here, we report on InAs-based devices both in one-dimensional and two-dimensional configurations. In the former, low-temperature measurements on a suspended nanowire are presented, inspecting the intrinsic spin-orbit contribution of the system. In the latter, Josephson Junctions between two Nb contacts comprising an InAs quantum well are investigated. Supercurrent flow is reported, with Nb critical temperature up to T_c~8K. Multiple Andreev reflection signals are observed in the dissipative regime. In both systems, we show that the presence of external gates represents a useful knob, allowing for wide tunability and control of device properties, such as spin-orbit coherence length or supercurrent amplitude., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures (Proceeding of the SPIE conference)

We study the thermodynamic properties of a superconductor/normal metal/superconductor Josephson junction {in the short limit}. Owing to the proximity effect, such a junction constitutes a thermodynamic system where {phase difference}, supercurrent, temperature and entropy are thermodynamical variables connected by equations of state. These allow conceiving quasi-static processes that we characterize in terms of heat and work exchanged. Finally, we combine such processes to construct a Josephson-based Otto and Stirling cycles. Precise shaping of coherent electron sources allows the controlled creation of wavepackets into a one dimensional (1D) quantum conductor. Periodic trains of Lorentzian pulses have been shown to induce minimal excitations without creating additional electron-hole pairs in a single non-interacting 1D electron channel. The presence of electron-electron (e-e) interactions dramatically affects the non-equilibrium dynamics of a 1D system. Here, we consider the intrinsic spectral properties of a helical liquid, with a pair of counterpropagating interacting channels, in the presence of time-dependent Lorentzian voltage pulses. We show that peculiar asymmetries in the behavior of the spectral function are induced by interactions, depending on the sign of the injected charges. Moreover, we discuss the robustness of the concept of minimal excitations in the presence of interactions, where the link with excess noise is no more straightforward. Finally, we propose a scanning tunneling microscope setup to spectroscopically access and probe the non-equilibrium behavior induced by the voltage drive and e-e interactions. This allows a diagnosis of fractional charges in a correlated quantum spin Hall liquid in the presence of time-dependent drives., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures

Electronic cooling in hybrid normal metal-insulator-superconductor junctions is a promising technology for the manipulation of thermal loads in solid state nanosystems. One of the main bottlenecks for efficient electronic cooling is the electron-phonon coupling, as it represents a thermal leakage channel to the phonon bath. Graphene is a two-dimensional material that exhibits a weaker electron-phonon coupling compared to standard metals. For this reason, we study the electron cooling in graphene-based systems consisting of a graphene sheet contacted by two insulator/superconductor junctions. We show that, by properly biasing the graphene, its electronic temperature can reach base values lower than those achieved in similar systems based on metallic ultra-thin films. Moreover, the lower electron-phonon coupling is mirrored in a lower heat power pumped into the superconducting leads, thus avoiding their overheating and preserving the cooling mechanisms. Finally, we analyze the possible application of cooled graphene as a bolometric radiation sensor. We study its main figures of merit, i.e. responsivity, noise equivalent power and response time. In particular, we show that the built-in electron refrigeration allows reaching a responsivity of the order of 50 nA/pW and a noise equivalent power of order of $\rm 10^{-18}\, W\, Hz^{-1/2}$ while the response speed is about 10 ns, corresponding to a thermal bandwidth in the order of 20MHz., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

Hybrid semiconductor/superconductor devices constitute an important platform for a wide range of applications, from quantum computing to topological-state-based architectures. Here, we demonstrate full modulation of the interference pattern in a superconducting interference device with two parallel islands of ballistic InAs quantum wells separated by a trench, by acting independently on two side-gates. This so far unexplored geometry enables us to tune the device with high precision from a SQUID-like to a Fraunhofer-like behavior simply by electrostatic gating, without the need for an additional in-plane magnetic field. These measurements are successfully analyzed within a theoretical model of an extended tunnel Josephson junction, taking into account the focusing factor of the setup. The impact of these results on the design of novel devices is discussed.

Performances of work-to-work conversion are studied for a dissipative nonlinear quantum system with two isochromatic phase-shifted drives. It is shown that for weak Ohmic damping simultaneous maximization of efficiency with finite power yield and low power fluctuations can be achieved. Optimal performances of these three quantities are accompanied by a shortfall of the trade-off bound recently introduced for classical thermal machines. This bound can be undercut down to zero for sufficiently low temperature and weak dissipation, where the non-Markovian quantum nature dominates. Analytic results are given for linear thermodynamics. These general features can persist in the nonlinear driving regime near to a maximum of the power yield and a minimum of the power fluctuations. Parafermions are emergent quasi-particles which generalize Majorana fermions and possess intriguing anyonic properties. The theoretical investigation of effective models hosting them is gaining considerable importance in view of present-day condensed-matter realizations where they have been predicted to appear. Here we study the simplest number-conserving model of particle-like Fock parafermions, namely a one-dimensional tight-binding model. By means of numerical simulations based on exact diagonalization and on the density-matrix renormalization group, we prove that this quadratic model is nonintegrable and displays bound states in the spectrum, due to its peculiar anyonic properties. Moreover, we discuss its many-body physics, characterizing anyonic correlation functions and discussing the underlying Luttinger-liquid theory at low energies. In the case when Fock parafermions behave as fractionalized fermions, we are able to unveil interesting similarities with two counter-propagating edge modes of two neighboring Laughlin states at filling 1/3., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. We theoretically explore the behavior of thermal transport in the topological SQUIPT, in the linear and nonlinear regime. The device consists of a topological Josephson junction based on a two-dimensional topological insulator in contact with two superconducting leads, and a probe tunnel coupled to the topological edge states of the junction. We compare the performance of a normal metal and a graphene probe, showing that the topological SQUIPT behaves as a passive thermal rectifier and that it can reach a rectification coefficient of up to $~ 145\%$ with the normal metal probe. Moreover, the interplay between the superconducting leads and the helical edge states leads to a unique behaviour due to a Doppler shift like effect, that allows one to influence quasi-particle transport through the edge channels via the magnetic flux that penetrates the junction. Exploiting this effect, we can greatly enhance the rectification coefficient for temperatures below the critical temperature $T_\text{C}$ in an active rectification scheme., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

Resistivity measurements of a few-layer black phosphorus (bP) crystal in parallel magnetic fields up to 45 T are reported as a function of the angle between the in-plane field and the source-drain (S-D) axis of the device. The crystallographic directions of the bP crystal were determined by Raman spectroscopy, with the zigzag axis found within 5{\deg} of the S-D axis, and the armchair axis in the orthogonal planar direction. A transverse magneto-resistance (TMR) as well as a classically-forbidden longitudinal magneto-resistance (LMR) are observed. Both are found to be strongly anisotropic and non-monotonic with increasing in-plane field. Surprisingly, the relative magnitude (in %) of the positive LMR is larger than the TMR above $\sim$32 T. Considering the known anisotropy of bP whose zigzag and armchair effective masses differ by a factor of approximately seven, our experiment strongly suggests this LMR to be a consequence of the anisotropic Fermi surface of bP., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Semiconductor nanowires featuring strong spin-orbit interactions (SOI), represent a promising platform for a broad range of novel technologies, such as spintronic applications or topological quantum computation. However, experimental studies into the nature and the orientation of the SOI vector in these wires remain limited despite being of upmost importance. Typical devices feature the nanowires placed on top of a substrate which modifies the SOI vector and spoils the intrinsic symmetries of the system. In this work, we report experimental results on suspended InAs nanowires, in which the wire symmetries are fully preserved and clearly visible in transport measurements. Using a vectorial magnet, the non-trivial evolution of weak anti-localization (WAL) is tracked through all 3D space, and both the spin-orbit length $l_{SO}$ and coherence length $l_\varphi$ are determined as a function of the magnetic field magnitude and direction. Studying the angular maps of the WAL signal, we demonstrate that the average SOI within the nanowire is isotropic and that our findings are consistent with a semiclassical quasi-1D model of WAL adapted to include the geometrical constraints of the nanostructure. Moreover, by acting on properly designed side gates, we apply an external electric field introducing an additional vectorial Rashba spin-orbit component whose strength can be controlled by external means. These results give important hints on the intrinsic nature of suspended nanowire and can be interesting for in the field of spintronics as well as for the manipulation of Majorana bound states in devices based on hybrid semiconductors., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

We consider the excitation of single-electron wave packets by means of a time dependent voltage applied to the ballistic edge channels of the integer quantum Hall effect at filling factor $\nu=2$. Due to electron-electron interactions, fractional excitations emerge along the edge. Their detailed structure is analyzed by evaluating the nonequilibrium momentum distributions associated with the different edge channels. We provide results for a generic time-dependent drive both in the stationary regime and for intermediate times, where the overlap between fractionalized wave packets carries relevant information on interaction strength. As a particular example we focus on a Lorentzian drive, which provides a clear signature of the minimal excitations known as Levitons. Here, we argue that inner-channel fractionalized excitations can be exploited to extract information about inter-channel interactions. We further confirm this idea by calculating the zero frequency noise due to the partitioning of these excitations at a quantum point contact and we propose a measurable quantity as a tool to directly probe electron-electron interactions and determine the so-called mixing angle of copropagating quantum Hall channels., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

A superconductor/normal metal/superconductor Josephson junction is a coherent electron system where the thermodynamic entropy depends on temperature and phase difference across the weak-link. Here, exploiting the phase-temperature thermodynamic diagram of a thermally isolated system, we argue that a cooling effect can be achieved when the phase drop across the junction is brought from 0 to $\pi$ in a iso-entropic process. We show that iso-entropic cooling can be enhanced with proper choice of geometrical and electrical parameters of the junction, i.e. by increasing the ratio between supercurrent and total junction volume. We present extensive numerical calculations using quasi-classical Green function methods for a short junction and we compare them with analytical results. Interestingly, we demonstrate that phase-coherent thermodynamic cycles can be implemented by combining iso-entropic and iso-phasic processes acting on the weak-link, thereby engineering the coherent version of thermal machines such as engines and cooling systems. We therefore evaluate their performances and the minimum temperature achievable in a cooling cycle., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Hybrid superconductor/semiconductor devices constitute a powerful platform where intriguing topological properties can be investigated. Here we present fabrication methods and analysis of Josephson junctions formed by a high-mobility InAs quantum-well bridging two Nb superconducting contacts. We demonstrate supercurrent flow with transport measurements, critical temperature of 8.1 K, and critical fields of the order of 3 T. Modulation of supercurrent amplitude can be achieved by acting on two side gates lithographed close to the two-dimensional electron gas. Low-temperature measurements reveal also well-developed quantum Hall plateaus, showing clean quantization of Hall conductance. Here the side gates can be used to manipulate channel width and electron carrier density in the device. These findings demonstrate the potential of these hybrid devices to investigate the coexistence of superconductivity and Quantum Hall effect and constitute the first step in the development of new device architectures hosting topological states of matter.
