Hayden White’s work has been discussed in France since the 1980s, and White himself has made extensive use of French literature, philosophy, and historiography. White, however, was ambivalent toward a certain French style in philosophy and the social sciences. While admiring scholars such as Foucault and Kristeva, he warned that the way the French document their inquiries and write up their materials does not always coincide with Anglo-American standards., O trabalho de Hayden White tem sido debatido em França desde a década de 1980 e o próprio White recorreu frequentemente à literatura, à filosofia e à historiografia francesa. No entanto, White manteve uma posição ambivalente face a um certo estilo de filosofia e ciências sociais francesas. This essay examines what remains of the Linguistic turn (LT) after Hay-den White, in the two meanings of the preposition “after”: “subsequent to” and “according to”. For White, the LT (under the umbrella of post-modernism) has made it possible to transcend a number of distinctions, such as those between text and context, fact and fiction, and history and literature. Those distinctions, however, are still defended by a large part of the historical community, including by scholars involved in exper-imental works, such as I. Jablonka. Furthermore, some philosophers hold the debates about the LT to be irrelevant. The specificity of history, for them, does not reside in its formal aspects (e.g., its use of narra-tive), but in its relations to evidence. Philippe Carrard is Professor of French Emeritus at the University of Vermont and currently Visiting Scholar in the Program of Comparative Literature at Dartmouth College, in the USA. He wrote a book on Malraux, but for the past twenty years his research has born mainly on the poetics of factual discourse, that is, on the rules, codes, and conventions shaping discourse that deals with real events, not fictional ones. In this area, he has published Poetics of the New History: French Historical Discourse from Braudel to Chartier (Johns Hopkins UP, 1992), The French Who Fought for Hitler: Memories from the Outcasts (Cambridge UP, 2010), and Le Passé mis en texte: Poétique de l’historiographie française contemporaine (Armand Colin, 2013). Along the same lines, he has written several articles on such subjects as the representation of consciousness in biographies, personifications in the business pages of the New York Times, strategies of titling in scholarly studies, and beginnings in histories of World War II., Philippe Carrard est professeur émérite à l’Université du Vermont et professeur invité à Dartmouth College, aux États-Unis. Poétique de l’historiographie française contemporaine, qui reprend en partie la matière de Poétique de la Nouvelle Histoire, rencontre un succès mérité auprès des critiques et des lecteurs. Dans cet ouvrage, Philippe Carrard s’attache à étudier en poéticien les protocoles et les conventions d’écriture auxquelles obéissent les historiens lorsqu’ils mettent finalement en texte les données qu’ils ont réunies. La poétique lui permet de tester certaines affirmations ou de répondre à certaines interrogations. « De Roger Chartier à Marcel Gauchet, de nombreux commentateurs ont souligné qu’un des changements principaux dans l’historiographie française des années 1980 avait consisté en une réévaluation du rôle des acteurs — rôle négligé durant une période où la recherche portait avant tout sur de vastes phénomènes sociaux et économiques. Or, la poétique donne les moyens de décrire la manière dont cette réévaluation a été conduite, en posant des questions telles que : dans cette étude historique, les événements sont-ils relatés selon la perspective des acteurs, ou selon celle de l’historien ? Ces acteurs ont-ils leur propre voix ? Et s’ils sont cités, comment leurs paroles sont-elles consignées et intégrées au texte ? ». Une des interrogations majeures de l’ouvrage concerne l’extension du recours à la forme du récit : le discours de l’historien prend-il toujours la forme du récit et, si ce n’est pas le cas, sous quelles formes non narratives peut-il être structuré ? Dans le prolongement des réflexions développées dans Le Passé mis en texte, Philippe Carrard nous propose aujourd’hui une « Vue d’ensemble sur Histoire et récit ».
