Integrated farming system (IFS) aims to diversify the agricultural landscapes by incorporating different components to meet the multifarious needs of the burgeoning population. The present study was undertaken to understand the impact of different cropping systems on soil organic carbon (SOC) stock, aggregate distribution, and aggregate associated organic carbon (AAOC) in 2-IFS models of varying sizes (0.4 and 0.8 ha) established during 2008-2009. After 10 years of the study, the fodder system registered the greatest TOC and carbon stocks across IFS models, with surface soil (0-15 cm) accumulating 17 and 13% higher TOC and C stock, respectively, in 0.4 and 0.8 ha models. In 0-15 cm, macroaggregates (Ma) represented the highest proportion (75-76%) in both models. Among cropping systems, the fodder system recorded the highest large macroaggregates in both IFS models. Within 0-30 cm depth, small macroaggregates are mostly found in the perennial system (fodder, guava+turmeric, and lemon intercropping system), indicating the potential to improve the aggregate stability over the seasonal (shorter duration) system. In general, micro aggregate (Mi) fraction was pre-dominant in sub-surface soil (17.35%). The maximum AAOC was found in Ma compared to Mi fractions, with approximately 67 and 63% of total carbon associated with Ma in 0.4 and 0.8 ha IFS models, respectively. Interestingly, the 0.8 ha IFS model had higher TOC (~11%) and carbon stock (~12%) than the 0.4 ha model, but AAOC did not show a similar result, indicating the influence of cropping systems on AAOC. The study indicated that the fodder-based production system had better performance in terms of soil physical health and increased aggregate stability and content of soil carbon. Biochar is a nature-based solution for sustainable agriculture but its potential adoption in some parts of sub-Saharan Africa is still minimal. In this study, we evaluated the agronomic potential of maize stover biochar in cowpea-maize sequential cropping in Uganda under field conditions. The treatments included; the common farmer practice of no inorganic fertilizer and no biochar (CTR), inorganic fertilizer (F), 10 t ha−1 biochar (B10), 40 t ha−1 biochar (B40), 10 t ha−1 biochar + inorganic Fertilizer (FB10), and 40 t ha−1 biochar + inorganic Fertilizer (FB40), arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results showed that cowpea seed yield was not significantly affected by biochar and fertilizer application but the haulm yield was significantly improved only in FB40 treatment. Maize grain and stover yield was significantly improved only in the FB40 treatment but biochar showed a high potential to also improve yield even without inorganic fertilizer. The potential for biochar to improve maize yield either in the presence or absence of fertilizers could be attributed to the residual soil fertility from cowpeas. In both seasons, biochar significantly improved soil pH, EC, SOC, total N, available P, exchangeable K and Ca, irrespective of fertilizer application. However, exchangeable Mg did not significantly vary among the treatments. This study further revealed that in cowpea-maize rotation, optimum yield could also be possible with sole biochar application. Therefore, instead of burning the maize stovers after harvest, farmers should convert the residues into biochar and return it to the soil so as to achieve sustainable food systems. One of the important areas of soil erosion science is the development of soil conservation measures. The analysis of published works shows that in Russia most of the techniques and methods to control soil erosion were developed in the 1960s–1980s. In recent decades, interest in scientific and practical developments in this area has been declining. Published data on erosion control measures are poorly systematized, and their generally accepted classification is absent. The typification of erosion-control measures proposed by the authors made it possible to systematize all these measures found in the works and to create their register in the form of a table. Information about the efficiency of erosion control measures is scarce and contradictory. The results of agrotechnical measures are best studied. Non-inversive tillage is the most efficient among agrotechnical measures, it helps to reduce soil erosion by 70–90% according to published data; other agrotechnical measures, on average, reduce the rate of soil erosion by half. Climate change and socioeconomic transformation in the agricultural and industrial complex of Russia in recent decades have led to significant changes in the rate and volume of soil erosion. However, the analysis of literature indicates a shortage of works aimed at adapting existing erosion control measures, or developing new measures with due account for global and regional changes in erosion/deposition processes. Aphanomyces root rot (ARR), caused by Aphanomyces euteiches, is one of the most devastating diseases that affect the production of peas. Several control strategies such as crop rotation, biocontrol, and fungicides have been proposed, but none provides a complete solution. Therefore, the deployment of resistant cultivars is fundamental. ARR resistance breeding is hampered by the moderate levels of resistance identified so far. The available screening protocols require post-inoculation root assessment, which is destructive, time-consuming, and tedious. In an attempt to address these limitations, we developed a non-destructive screening protocol based on foliar symptoms and used it to identify new sources of resistance in a Pisum spp. germplasm collection. Accessions were root inoculated separately with two A. euteiches isolates, and leaf symptoms were assessed at 5, 10, 14, 17, and 20 days after inoculation (DAI). Although the majority of accessions exhibited high levels of susceptibility, thirty of them exhibited moderate resistance. These thirty accessions were selected for a second experiment, in which they were inoculated with both A. euteiches isolates at two inoculum doses. The objective of this second trial was to confirm the resistance of these accessions by evaluating root and biomass loss, as well as foliar symptoms, and to compare root and foliar evaluations. As a result, a high correlation (R2 = 0.75) between foliar and root evaluations was observed, validating the foliar evaluation method. Notably, accessions from P.s. subsp. humile exhibited the lowest symptomatology across all evaluation methods, representing valuable genetic resources for breeding programs aimed at developing pea varieties resistant to ARR. Accurately quantifying flora and their respective anatomical structures within natural ecosystems is paramount for both botanical breeders and agricultural cultivators. For breeders, precise plant enumeration during the flowering phase is instrumental in discriminating genotypes exhibiting heightened flowering frequencies, while for growers, such data inform potential crop rotation strategies. Moreover, the quantification of specific plant components, such as flowers, can offer prognostic insights into the potential yield variances among different genotypes, thereby facilitating informed decisions pertaining to production levels. The overarching aim of the present investigation is to explore the capabilities of a neural network termed GhP2-YOLO, predicated on advanced deep learning techniques and multi-target tracking algorithms, specifically tailored for the enumeration of rapeseed flower buds and blossoms from recorded video frames. Building upon the foundation of the renowned object detection model YOLO v8, this network integrates a specialized P2 detection head and the Ghost module to augment the model's capacity for detecting diminutive targets with lower resolutions. This modification not only renders the model more adept at target identification but also renders it more lightweight and less computationally intensive. The optimal iteration of GhP2-YOLOm demonstrated exceptional accuracy in quantifying rapeseed flower samples, showcasing an impressive mean average precision at 50% intersection over union metric surpassing 95%. Leveraging the virtues of StrongSORT, the subsequent tracking of rapeseed flower buds and blossom patterns within the video dataset was adeptly realized. By selecting 20 video segments for comparative analysis between manual and automated counts of rapeseed flowers, buds, and the overall target count, a robust correlation was evidenced, with R-squared coefficients measuring 0.9719, 0.986, and 0.9753, respectively. Conclusively, a user-friendly "Rapeseed flower detection" system was developed utilizing a GUI and PyQt5 interface, facilitating the visualization of rapeseed flowers and buds. This system holds promising utility in field surveillance apparatus, enabling agriculturalists to monitor the developmental progress of rapeseed flowers in real time. This innovative study introduces automated tracking and tallying methodologies within video footage, positioning deep convolutional neural networks and multi-target tracking protocols as invaluable assets in the realms of botanical research and agricultural administration. Studies across multiple soils find increasing pH decreases water repellency. In this study, water repellency and a range of other soil physical properties of bulk soils, aggregates and intact specimens were measured on a long-term pH field experiment on a single sandy loam soil under a ley-arable crop rotation, with soil pH adjustments occurring annually by adding FeSO4 or CaCO3, to lower or raise the pH, respectively. Crop impacts were investigated by comparing 3rd year grass-white clover to spring oats, at the beginning (May) and end (September) of the growing season to allow soil structure comparisons. As in previous research, increased CO2 microbial respiration (p<0.05) was found with increasing pH along the gradient, but in this study, we found only the aggregate and soil bulk density affected by soil pH. Soil-water contact angles differed between crops (p<0.05), as well as the repellency index of soil aggregates, however, there was no soil pH effect. Overall, differences in data were found to be a result of the various crops in the rotation rather than by soil pH, indicating only minor impacts on soil physical characteristics after > 55 years of chemical additions to amend soil pH. Strawberries in California are grown in specific coastal areas where land is scarce and climate change threatens future production. Strawberry growers are under pressure to adopt sustainable production strategies such as crop rotation, but this practice requires more land than back-to-back planting. The objectives of this research were to quantify the rate of crop rotation across the three main strawberry producing regions in California (Ventura, Santa Maria, and Monterey Bay), and evaluate geographic and edaphic influences on crop rotation. All strawberry fields in the main strawberry producing regions of California were identified by satellite imagery and manual inspection for the years 2017 through 2022. ArcGIS Pro was used to outline each strawberry field and compare among years to determine the period between successive strawberry plantings. Edaphic characteristics and shapefiles for surrounding fields were retrieved from public datasets. The three regions significantly differed in their rates of crop rotation. On average, 95, 52, and 25% of strawberry hectares were rotated each year in the Monterey Bay, Santa Maria, and Ventura regions, respectively. Shorter rotation lengths were associated with reduced distance from the ocean and soil with a higher percentage of sand. Based on 2 years of disease surveys, fields infested with Macrophomina phaseolina tended to be further inland than fields infested with Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae in the Monterey Bay region. This study determined that distance from the ocean and soil texture are associated with crop rotation lengths in California strawberry production. Enough land may be available in the Santa Maria and Monterey Bay regions for growers to lengthen crop rotations, but water quality, social networks, and financial considerations that were outside the scope of this study are likely to limit the ability for strawberry growers to maximize the duration of crop rotations. The combined application of manure and mineral fertilizer represents an effective strategy for enhancing crop yield. However, the relationship between soil fertility and crop yield remains unclear in saline-alkaline soil. Here, a 9-year field experiment (2015–2023) was conducted to investigate the effects of manure application and crop rotations on crop yield and economic efficiency as well as potential associated mechanisms in the Hetao Irrigation District. The results showed that in the third cropping rotation cycle, combined application of manure and mineral fertilizers (NPKO) caused a 6.2%, 38.9%, 65.3%, and 132.2% increase in wheat, sunflower, wheat equivalent yield, and the economic income of sunflower, respectively. The average grain yield had a positive correlation with soil organic matter and nutrient supply. This suggested that the soil organic matter had a positive effect on the crop yield due to its impact on nutrient supply. Simultaneously, the sunflower seed setting rate increased by 65.2% under NPKO. The linear regression model revealed that each additional input of 20 Mg ha−1 of manure resulted in an increase of 3.56 kg ha−1 in crop phosphorus harvest and a 0.05 Kg ha−1 increase in wheat equivalent yield compared to NPK. In a nine-year field experiment in a wheat-maize-sunflower cropping system in Hetao Irrigation Area, Inner Mongolia, China, organic amendments applied as straw, manure, green manure, and the combination of green manure and straw increased wheat and maize yield, soil aggregate stability, and soil microbial activity in comparison with chemical fertilizer, without changing greenhouse gas emission intensity. To effectively combat the re-infestation of boll weevils (Anthonomus grandis L.) in cotton fields, it is necessary to address the detection of volunteer cotton (VC) plants (Gossypium hirsutum L.) in rotation crops such as corn (Zea mays L.) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.). The current practice involves manual field scouting at the field edges, which often leads to the oversight of VC plants growing in the middle of fields alongside corn and sorghum. As these VC plants reach the pinhead squaring stage (5–6 leaves), they can become hosts for boll weevil pests. Consequently, it becomes crucial to detect, locate, and accurately spot-spray these plants with appropriate chemicals. This paper focuses on the application of YOLOv5m to detect and locate VC plants during the tasseling (VT) growth stage of cornfields. Our results demonstrate that VC plants can be detected with a mean average precision (mAP) of 79% at an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 50% and a classification accuracy of 78% on images sized 1207 × 923 pixels. The average detection inference speed is 47 frames per second (FPS) on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU-16 GB and 0.4 FPS on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, which underscores the relevance and impact of detection speed on the feasibility of real-time applications. Additionally, we show the application of a customized unmanned aircraft system (UAS) for spot-spray applications through simulation based on the developed computer vision (CV) algorithm. This UAS-based approach enables the near-real-time detection and mitigation of VC plants in corn fields, with near-real-time defined as approximately 0.02 s per frame on the NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPU and 2.5 s per frame on the NVIDIA Jetson TX2 GPU, thereby offering an efficient management solution for controlling boll weevil pests. Rapeseed–rice rotation is a cropping system that improves the land-use rate. The present study conducted a field experiment with winter planting of rapeseed as treatment (WR) and winter fallow as control (CK) to investigate the effects of winter planting of rapeseed on growth, yield formation, and 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP) biosynthesis of fragrant rice in the two subsequent cropping seasons. The results show that WR treatment improved alkali-hydro nitrogen and rapidly available phosphorus contents in soil. Compared with CK, WR treatment significantly increased grain yield and effective panicle number per plant by 21.16–27.26% and 7.33–21.24%, respectively. Higher net photosynthetic rate, leaf area index, and dry matter accumulation of fragrant rice plants were recorded in WR treatment and CK. Furthermore, compared with CK, WR treatment significantly increased grain 2-AP content, which could be explained by increased content of pyrroline-5-carboxylic acid, methylglyoxal, 1-pyrroline, and enhanced activity of proline dehydrogenase. In addition, future studies should be conducted at a molecular level to reveal the regulation mechanism in 2-AP biosynthesis of fragrant rice under conditions of winter planting of rapeseed. The glomalin content is generally considered an indicator of the soil organic matter (SOM) quality. The content of easily extractable glomalin (EEG) and the total glomalin (TG) content was investigated across 71 different sites in the Czech Republic with arable soil and crop production (12 chernozems, 30 luvisols, 17 cambisols, and 12 fluvisols). The majority of the crops in the crop rotation were cereals (45.5%—mainly winter wheat, winter barley, and spring barley). The proportion of winter canola within the crop rotation was 15.9%. The contribution of other crops was substantially smaller (alfalfa, clover, potatoes, beet, silage maize, grain maize). The representation of crops in the crop rotation is standard for conventional farming in the Czech Republic. Based on the results of long-term field monitoring at 71 sites in different soil–climate conditions, we can state the following. The TG content was significantly correlated with the soil organic matter carbon content (CSOM), as well as another important indicator of SOM quality (humic and fulvic acid carbon content ratio—CHA/CFA). A significant and positive correlation was also determined for the TG and clay content (size < 0.002 mm), as well as particles smaller than 0.01 mm. The easily extractable glomalin content (EEG) did not differ based on the reference soil group (RSG). On the other hand, the total glomalin content (TG) was significantly higher in the chernozem RSG in comparison with other RSGs (luvisols, cambisols, fluvisols). There was no relationship between the pHCaCl2 and glomalin (EEG; TG). The same can be said about the relationship between glomalin (EEG; TG) and the bulk density and porosity. No link was established between the glomalin content (EEG; TG) and phosphorus plant-available content. There was no relationship between the amount of applied organic matter (carbon inputs) and the soil glomalin content (EEG; TG). This relationship was not influenced by the type of applied organic fertilizer. No significant relationship was found for either straw, manure, or compost. The Czech Republic has diverse soil conditions, which cause notable differences in crop water balance (WB). To assess the long-term crop WB and crop water stress (CWS) intensity in rainfed conditions, four conventional eight- and ten-year crop rotations (CRs) with perennial forage (alfalfa), cereals, oilseeds, root crops and legumes were proposed for a heterogeneous lowland soil region (six texture classes) in eastern Bohemia. Two of the CRs were selected irrespective of the WB (eight-year, C-8; ten-year, C-10), and the other two were designated according to soil water resources and crop water requirements (CWRs) as water-saving (W-S) and water-demanding (W-D) for this region. All CRs had a negative WB on average (i.e., CWRs exceeded the available water resources), with varying degrees of CWS (categories 1 (low) to 4 (high)). The W-S CR reduced the WB deficit relative to the other CRs by omitting maize, sunflower and sugar beet and including sorghum, and expanded the proportion of the area not affected by CWS (categories 1–2) to 33% for predominantly loamy soils. In contrast, categories 1–2 in the C-8, C-10 and W-D CRs represented only 15%, 14% and 7% of the area, respectively. Other areas were significantly affected by CWS (categories 3–4) and showed a high risk of yield reduction. Foxtail millet is an important characteristic grain crop in northern China. However, weeds compete seriously with foxtail millet and have long been a biological factor that has plagued foxtail millet production. Rotation requires determining the species and sequence of crops, and reasonable rotation has many benefits for agriculture, including reducing the damage by weeds. In order to clarify the combination effects of foxtail millet–soybean rotation sequence and herbicide on weed control and crop yield, fixed-position experiments were designed in three growing seasons. Foxtail millet and soybean were planted following the sequence below in successive years (FFF, foxtail millet–wheat–foxtail millet–wheat–foxtail millet; SFF: soybean–wheat–foxtail millet–wheat–foxtail millet; SSF, soybean–wheat–soybean–wheat–foxtail millet; SSS, soybean–wheat–soybean–wheat–soybean), and weed density, biodiversity, weed seedbank, and crop yield were examined and analyzed. The results showed that the average weed density of SFF and SSF was reduced by 61.7% and 66.3% compared with FFF in the three years and by 16.5% and 26.6% compared with SSS, separately. Foxtail millet–soybean rotation (SFF and SSF) increased the species richness and the Margalef species richness index of the weed community and reduced the Simpson index compared with the continuous foxtail millet and the continuous soybean cropping (FFF and SSS). The weed seedbank of SFF and SSF was 45.7% and 55.8% smaller than that of FFF and increased by 92.7% and 56.7% compared with SSS, respectively. The weed density in the FFF treatment was significantly correlated with the 0–5 cm grass seedbank size, while there was no significant correlation in the other three treatments. Benefiting from the lower weed damage intensity, the yield of foxtail millet in SFF and SSF increased by 54.05% and 221.81% compared with FFF, respectively. The research results revealed that both SFF and SSF can effectively reduce the damage of weeds and help improve biodiversity. SSF has a higher weed control effect and higher foxtail millet yield than SFF. Cover crops (CCs) are regarded as beneficial to agricultural practice as an option for soil quality improvement in field production systems. The main goal of this study was to assess the impact of spring phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.) and buckwheat (Fagopyrum Mill.) in a crop rotation (CC–leek–parsley, 2020–2021) on the physicochemical and biological properties of the soil in an organic high tunnel system. Soil analyses involved measurements of bulk density, water capacity, soil aggregation, soil organic carbon (SOC), available soil nutrients, as well as microbial abundance and diversity. Phacelia generated more aboveground biomass (58.2 t fresh matter ha−1) than buckwheat (33.0 t ha−1), and their biomass contained 161 kg N ha−1 and 67 kg N ha−1, respectively. A large quantity of elements, such as N, Ca, P, S, B, and Cu, were found in phacelia biomass. More Mg and Na were found in buckwheat plants. The results showed that CC biomass significantly improved some of the soil physical and chemical properties, such as soil organic carbon stock and wet aggregate stability, and decreased soil bulk density. Cover crop treatments changed the dynamics of soil bacterial and fungus populations in a high tunnel system. Phacelia increased the quantity of ammonifiers and nitrifiers in the soil substantially. Further research with a long-term focus is needed to assess the impact of cover crops on soil properties, soil quality, and subsequent crop yields in high tunnel crop rotation and management systems. The present study assessed the influence of the preceding crop (crotalaria or corn) on the bromatological, digestibility and microbiological aspects of the EMBRAPA 139 black oat hay (Avena strigosa) cultivar. A randomized block design was used, with subplots divided according to time, whereby the preceding crop (crotalaria or corn) was allocated to the main plot and hay storage times (baling, 30, 60 and 90 days of storage) to the subplots, with five repetitions. Crotalaria as predecessor resulted in lower indigestible fiber and higher protein contents in black oat hay, both in acid detergent, as well as higher pH. Corn as the preceding crop provided better hay digestibility due to lower neutral detergent insoluble protein content and higher in vitro neutral detergent fiber digestibility. Crop rotation increases crop yield, improves soil health, and reduces plant disease. However, few studies were conducted on the use of intensive cropping patterns to improve the microenvironment of saline soils. The present study thoroughly evaluated the impact of a three-year maize–peanut–millet crop rotation pattern on the crop yield. The rhizosphere soil of the crop was collected at maturity to assess the effects of crop rotation on the composition and function of microbial communities in different tillage layers (0–20 cm and 20–40 cm) of sandy saline–alkaline soils. After three years of crop rotation, the maize yield and economic benefits rose by an average of 32.07% and 22.25%, respectively, while output/input grew by 10.26%. The pH of the 0–40 cm tillage layer of saline–alkaline soils decreased by 2.36%, organic matter rose by 13.44%–15.84%, and soil-available nutrients of the 0–20 cm tillage layer increased by 11.94%–69.14%. As compared to continuous cropping, crop rotation boosted soil nitrogen and phosphorus metabolism capacity by 8.61%–88.65%. Enrichment of Actinobacteria and Basidiomycota increased crop yield. Crop rotation increases microbial community richness while decreasing diversity. The increase in abundance can diminish competitive relationships between species, boost synergistic capabilities, alter bacterial and fungal community structure, and enhance microbial community function, all of which elevate crop yields. Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, is one of the diseases that causes major economic losses in cruciferous crops worldwide. Although prevention strategies, including soil pH adjustment and crop rotation, have been used, the disease's long persistence and devastating impact continuously remain in the soil. CR varieties were developed for clubroot-resistant (CR) Chinese cabbage, and 'Akimeki' is one of the clubroot disease-resistant cultivars. However, recent studies have reported susceptibility to several Korean pathotypes in Akimeki and the destruction of the resistance to P. brassicae in many Brassica species against CR varieties, requiring the understanding of more fine-tuned plant signaling by fungal pathogens. In this study, we focused on the early molecular responses of Akimeki during infection with two P. brassicae strains, Seosan (SS) and Hoengseong2 (HS2), using RNA sequencing (RNA-seq). Among a total of 2358 DEGs, 2037 DEGs were differentially expressed following SS and HS2 infection. Gene ontology (GO) showed that 1524 and 513 genes were up-regulated following SS and HS2 inoculations, respectively. Notably, the genes of defense response and jasmonic acid regulations were enriched in the SS inoculation condition, and the genes of water transport and light intensity response were enriched in the HS2 inoculation condition. The growth of cover crops can contribute to the increase in phosphorus content at depth by root decomposition. The aim of this work was to verify the effect of cover crops on soil phosphorus availability and use by successive plants, and the accumulation of soil P in a no-tillage system conducted for 14 years. This research was carried out during the 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 crop seasons, whose treatments have been installed and maintained since 2003. The experimental design was a randomized block design, and the plots consisted of spring crops: pearl millet, forage sorghum, sunn hemp, and additionally, a fallow/chiseling area. The evaluation of available P was determined by P fractionation. In general, in the two years of evaluation, the accumulation of P in the shoot dry matter was higher in sunn hemp growth, on average 25% higher than pearl millet in 2016 and 40% higher than sorghum in 2017. The highest contents of labile inorganic P were in the sorghum–soybean and fallow/chiseling–soybean successions, with values higher than 50 mg kg−1 of P in the 0–0.1 m soil layer. However, in the other layers analyzed, the cover crops obtained higher availability of labile inorganic P. The systems using cover crops recovered 100% of the P fertilized in soybean. The purpose of the researches was to determine how the potassium balance depended on fertilizing system and how it influenced crop productivity. The experimental part of the work was carried out under the conditions of continuous (since 1964) stationary experiment of the Chair of Agrochemistry and Soil Science the basis of which is a 10-field crop rotation deployed in time and space. The soil of the experimental plots is ashed heavy loamy black soil on loess. For simplifying balance calculations, the number of comparable and equal articles in the coming part and in the extracted one was reduced. It was considered that the total potassium amount which came from the atmosphere and with seeds was responsible for erosion losses and those from washing off. The results obtained show that potassium balance and its intensity in every rotation was formed unevenly and depended considerably on the level of its coming together with fertilizers and removing when harvesting. It has been proved that when increasing the used fertilizer dose, the balance volume rises which characterizes potassium circulation size in agrocenosis. The potassium balance data analysis when leaving unmarketable part in the field has displayed that its intensity increases significantly. Leaving the unmarketable part of the harvest in the field balances potassium in the soil significantly without using high mineral fertilizer doses which entails a number of ecological problems. It has been defined that the majority of crop productivity can be observed at a potassium balance of -30 kg (kg per year). Only clover productivity at a more negative potassium balance has decreased which testifies to its wider tolerance zone as to the given nutrient content in the soil compared to other crop rotations. Long-term continuous cropping affects the soil microecological community and leads to nutrient imbalances, which reduces crop yields, and crop rotation can increase soil productivity. To study the effects of the cultivation of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) and corn (Zea mays) on the microbial community, physical and chemical factors and the structure of aggregates in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) long-term continuous cropping soils were examined. Four cropping patterns were established, including one continuous cropping pattern and three crop rotation patterns, and the diversity of the soil microecological community was measured using high-throughput sequencing. The physical and chemical properties of different models of soil were measured, and the soil aggregate structure was determined by dry and wet sieving. Planting of aftercrop tomato and corn altered the bacterial community of the cotton continuous soil to a lesser extent and the fungal community to a greater extent. In addition, continuous cropping reduced the diversity and richness of the soil fungal community. Different aftercrop planting patterns showed that there were very high contents of soil organic carbon and organic matter in the cotton-maize rotation model, while the soil aggregate structure was the most stable in the corn-cotton rotation model. Planting tomato in continuous cropping cotton fields has a greater effect on the soil microbial community than planting maize. Therefore, according to the characteristics of different succeeding crop planting patterns, the damage of continuous cropping of cotton to the soil microenvironment can be alleviated directionally, which will enable the sustainable development of cotton production. Assessments of farmer satisfaction can be a crucial tool for effectively implementing an appropriate ecological compensation policy. This study evaluates the effectiveness of an ecological compensation policy for crop rotation in China's black soil regions from the perspective of farmer satisfaction. Specifically, utilizing an improved entropy TOPSIS, logistic regression, and the obstacle degree model, this empirical study analyzes the performance of the ecological compensation policy for crop rotation in black soil regions and identifies barriers in Heilongjiang Province. The findings indicate that gender significantly and positively affects outcomes at the 10% level, while age has a notable influence at the 5% level. Additionally, the family labor force and the quality of cultivated land, both significant at the 5% level with negative coefficients, suggest a diminished likelihood of farmers participating in these ecological compensation projects. The family's source of income, significantly influential at the 1% level, also indicates a lower propensity among farmers to engage. Performance analysis reveals that the values for variables of satisfaction with the project's publicity (A1), satisfaction with the protection of farmers' rights and interest (A3), overall satisfaction with the effectiveness of the project (B1), satisfaction with ecological compensation methods (B3), and satisfaction with household income after the implementation of the project (C1) are above the average. In contrast, values for variables of satisfaction with the supervision and management (A2), satisfaction with the payment of ecological compensation funds (A4), satisfaction level with black soil rotation ecological compensation standards (B2), satisfaction with the welfare level of family life after the implementation of the project (C2), and satisfaction with farmers' proactive participation in the project (D1) fall below the average of 3.03. The sustainable cultivation of canola is under threat from clubroot disease (Plasmodiophora brassicae). The pathogen's resting spores can survive in the soil for extended periods, complicating disease management. Therefore, effective clubroot control requires a combination of tactics that provide multiple layers of protection. Management strategies have focused on pathogen avoidance and reducing disease levels in infested fields. The sanitation of machinery and field equipment remains the most effective method for preventing the pathogen's introduction into non-infested fields. For disease reduction, crop rotation, liming, chemical control, and host resistance are commonly employed, with the use of clubroot-resistant cultivars being the most effective to date. However, resistance breakdown has been observed within four years of the introduction of new cultivars, jeopardizing the long-term effectiveness of this approach. A promising yet underexplored strategy is the use of cultivar mixtures. This approach leverages mechanisms such as the dilution effect, the barrier effect, induced resistance, disruptive selection, and the compensatory effect to control the disease. Cultivar mixtures have the potential to reduce the impact of clubroot on canola production while preserving pathogen population structure, thereby minimizing the likelihood of resistance breakdown. Understanding the soil bacterial communities involved in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling can inform beneficial tillage and crop rotation practices for sustainability and crop production. This study evaluated soil bacterial diversity, compositional structure, and functions associated with C-N cycling at two soil depths (0–15 cm and 15–30 cm) under long-term tillage (conventional tillage [CT] and no-till [NT]) and crop rotation (monocultures of corn, soybean, and wheat and corn–soybean–wheat rotation) systems. The soil microbial communities were characterized by metabarcoding the 16S rRNA gene V4–V5 regions using Illumina MiSeq. The results showed that long-term NT reduced the soil bacterial diversity at 15–30 cm compared to CT, while no significant differences were found at 0–15 cm. The bacterial communities differed significantly at the two soil depths under NT but not under CT. Notably, over 70% of the tillage-responding KEGG orthologs (KOs) associated with C fixation (primarily in the reductive citric acid cycle) were more abundant under NT than under CT at both depths. The tillage practices significantly affected bacteria involved in biological nitrogen (N2) fixation at the 0–15 cm soil depth, as well as bacteria involved in denitrification at both soil depths. The crop type and rotation regimes had limited effects on bacterial diversity and structure but significantly affected specific C-N-cycling genes. For instance, three KOs associated with the Calvin–Benson cycle for C fixation and four KOs related to various N-cycling processes were more abundant in the soil of wheat than in that of corn or soybean. These findings indicate that the long-term tillage practices had a greater influence than crop rotation on the soil bacterial communities, particularly in the C- and N-cycling processes. Soil-borne diseases are exacerbated by continuous cropping and negatively impact maize health and yields. We conducted a long-term (11-year) field experiment in the black soil region of Northeast China to analyze the effects of different cropping systems on maize yield and rhizosphere soil fungal community structure and function. The experiment included three cropping systems: continuous maize cropping (CMC), maize–soybean rotation (MSR), and maize–soybean intercropping (MSI). MSI and MSR resulted in a 3.30–16.26% lower ear height coefficient and a 7.43–12.37% higher maize yield compared to CMC. The richness and diversity of rhizosphere soil fungi were 7.75–20.26% lower in MSI and MSR than in CMC. The relative abundances of Tausonia and Mortierella were associated with increased maize yield, whereas the relative abundance of Solicoccozyma was associated with decreased maize yield. MSI and MSR had higher proportions of wood saprotrophs and lower proportions of plant pathogens than CMC. Furthermore, our findings indicate that crop rotation is more effective than intercropping for enhancing maize yield and mitigating soil-borne diseases in the black soil zone of Northeast China. Nematodes serve as key indicators of soil health in ecological studies. Therefore, the current study examined the community structure and metabolic footprint of soil nematodes in alfalfa fields across varying levels of N supply in the semi-arid Loess Plateau. The findings offer theoretical guidance for the sustainable management of artificial alfalfa grasslands in this region. The research was based on alfalfa fields with different N application rates (0, 50, 100, 150 kg/ha2) as the research object, The shallow plate method was used to separate and extract soil nematodes, identify soil nematode groups, calculate ecological function index and metabolic footprint, and identify indicator species. A total of 6346 nematodes were isolated in this study, belonging to 27 genera and 19 families. Notably, the plant parasitic nematode Helicotylenchus was predominant. As N addition increased, the plant parasitic index (PPI) increased significantly. A N50 application significantly enhanced the soil nematode diversity index (H ) and the free-living index (MI). The findings showcased a noticeable decrease in disturbance within the N50 soil nematode community. This resulted in a mature and stable community structure primarily attributed to the heightened abundance of omnivorous/predatory nematodes. Across various N levels, soil nematode communities underwent significant alterations in the soil food web structure through shifts in their metabolic footprint. Future strategies should focus on refining N management practices and integrating sustainable approaches like crop rotation and pest management. Background: Guangxi is the leading sugarcane-producing area in China. Due to the Panama disease outbreak in banana gardens, sugarcane and banana rotation was recommended. A field experiment with the newly released sugarcane cultivar Zhongzhe 1 (ZZ1) was conducted to understand the role of the sugarcane–banana rotation system in shaping the rhizosphere microbiota. Fields in the region possess characteristics of red laterite soil. Results: Using Illumina HiSeq sequencing to analyze soil samples' 16S rRNA V3-V4 region, the preceding banana rotation field had relatively greater bacterial diversity than the monoculture sugarcane field. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria were the dominant phyla, with distinct taxa enriched in each environment. However, the preceding sugarcane monoculture field enriched functional groups related to nitrogen fixation and cellulolysis. Network analysis highlighted contrasting network structures between sugarcane and banana rhizospheres, suggesting differential stability and susceptibility to environmental influences. Furthermore, correlations between soil properties and bacterial alpha-diversity underscored the influence of preceding crops on rhizosphere microbial communities. Conclusion: This research enhances our understanding of crop rotation effects on soil microbial ecology and provides insights into optimizing agricultural practices for enhanced soil health and crop productivity. Background: Climate change is inevitable owing from modern-day chemical agriculture, exerting detrimental impacts on sustainable crop production. Global agriculture is now facing serious threats from biotic stresses like weeds, pests, diseases, etc. These stresses not only hamper growth and production but also reduce crop quality. Exclusive reliance on synthetic inputs to tackle biotic stresses has created resistance, resurgence, residues, etc., leading to environmental pollution. Although plants adopt defensive mechansims, such biotic stresses need to be addressed properly with various eco-friendly organic farming approaches. Suitable modification and adoption of various organic agronomic practices (manual, mechanical, cultural, and biological) such as soil solarization, crop rotation, intercropping, tillage, sowing time and method, nutrient, water and intercultural operations, organic formulations, selection of resistant/tolerant varieties, etc., can mitigate the negative impacts of biotic stresses to a high extent resulting in uplift in crop production as well as the quality of produce. In organic farming, clover is an important basis for green manure in crop rotation systems due to its nitrogen-fixing effect. However, clover is often sown in mixtures with grass to achieve a yield-increasing effect. In order to determine the quantity and distribution of clover and its influence on the subsequent crops, clover plants must be identified at the individual plant level and spatially differentiated from grass plants. In practice, this is usually done by visual estimation or extensive field sampling. High-resolution unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offer a more efficient alternative. In the present study, clover and grass plants were classified based on spectral information from high-resolution UAV multispectral images and texture features using a random forest classifier. Three different timestamps were observed in order to depict the phenological development of clover and grass distributions. To reduce data redundancy and processing time, relevant texture features were selected based on a wrapper analysis and combined with the original bands. Including these texture features, a significant improvement in classification accuracy of up to 8% was achieved compared to a classification based on the original bands only. Depending on the phenological stage observed, this resulted in overall accuracies between 86% and 91%. Crop identification at the field level using remote sensing data is a very important task. However, the use of multispectral data for the construction of vegetation indices is sometimes impossible or limited. For such situations, solutions based on the use of time series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) indices are promising, eliminating the problems associated with cloudiness and providing an assessment of crop development characteristics during the growing season. We evaluated the use of time series of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) indices to characterize crop development during the growing season. The use of SAR imagery for crop identification addresses issues related to cloudiness. Therefore, it is important to choose the SAR index that is the most stable and has the lowest spatial variability throughout the growing season while being comparable to the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The presented work is devoted to the study of these issues. In this study, the spatial variabilities of different SAR indices time series were compared for a single region for the first time to identify the most stable index for use in precision agriculture, including the in-field heterogeneity of crop sites, crop rotation control, mapping, and other tasks in various agricultural areas. Seventeen Sentinel-1B images of the southern part of the Khabarovsk Territory in the Russian Far East at a spatial resolution of 20 m and temporal resolution of 12 days for the period between 14 April 2021 and 1 November 2021 were obtained and processed to generate vertical–horizontal/vertical–vertical polarization (VH/VV), radar vegetation index (RVI), and dual polarimetric radar vegetation index (DpRVI) time series. NDVI time series were constructed from multispectral Sentinel-2 images using a cloud cover mask. The characteristics of time series maximums were calculated for different types of crops: soybean, oat, buckwheat, and timothy grass. The DpRVI index exhibited the highest stability, with coefficients of variation of the time series that were significantly lower than those for RVI and VH/VV. The main characteristics of the SAR and NDVI time series—the maximum values, the dates of the maximum values, and the variability of these indices—were compared. The variabilities of the maximum values and dates of maximum values for DpRVI were lower than for RVI and VH/VV, whereas the variabilities of the maximum values and the dates of maximum values were comparable for DpRVI and NDVI. On the basis of the DpRVI index, classifications were carried out using seven machine learning methods (fine tree, quadratic discriminant, Gaussian naïve Bayes, fine k nearest neighbors or KNN, random under-sampling boosting or RUSBoost, random forest, and support vector machine) for experimental sites covering a total area of 1009.8 ha. The quadratic discriminant method yielded the best results, with a pixel classification accuracy of approximately 82% and a kappa value of 0.67. Overall, 90% of soybean, 74.1% of oat, 68.9% of buckwheat, and 57.6% of timothy grass pixels were correctly classified. At the field level, 94% of the fields included in the test dataset were correctly classified. The paper results show that the DpRVI can be used in cases where the NDVI is limited, allowing for the monitoring of phenological development and crop mapping. Cultivation of varieties and hybrids of grain crops with the use of scientific technologies with elements of biologization helps to preserve biodiversity and reduce the negative impact on the environment, while simultaneously solving the grain-food problem and providing consumers of the world market with high-quality grain products, especially in conditions of climate change. The article examines Ukraine's prospects on the world market of corn grain and outlines ways to increase the efficiency of its production, taking into account the global challenges and threats of today. The purpose of the article is to establish the long-term dynamics of sown areas, production and yield of maize in Ukraine, ways to increase the export potential of Ukrainian maize based on the complex implementation of high-yielding hybrids and scientific technologies with elements of biologization in the conditions of the negative impact of climate change and other stress factors. The methodological approach takes into account the general concepts of the development and features of agrarian production based on the use of data of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, United States Department of Agriculture, United Nations, Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine and State Statistics Service of Ukraine. Statistical data on the world production and export of maize grain, the dynamics of sown areas, production and yield of maize in Ukraine are demonstrated, which directly focus attention on the competitiveness of Ukrainian maize on the world grain market. These arguments are confirmed by the analytical results, which show that in 2022, despite the negative impact of the climatic factors and a full-scale armed attack by the russian federation, Ukraine entered the top five global producers and the top four global exporters of maize grain. Conceptually identified key problems, the solution of which will ensure further growth of maize productivity in different soil-climatic conditions. For the effective production of grain maize, a number of adaptation measures are proposed to overcome the negative impact of climate change and other stress factors, which consist in the complex application of high-yielding hybrids and environmentally safe technologies, which include: the use of plant residues with the use of modern biodestructors for the maximum use of their natural mass, which along with the implementation of scientifically based crop rotations, the introduction of organic and mineral fertilizers and plant protection products, will contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and the solution of the grain-food problem in the world. Yam (Dioscorea spp.) is an important tuber crop consumed globally. However, stable yam production faces challenges from a variety of diseases caused by fungi, nematodes, viruses, and bacteria. Prominent diseases such as anthracnose, leaf spot, yam wilt, dry rot, and crazy root syndrome, currently pose serious threats to yam yields. These diseases not only result in quality degradation but also cause great economic losses. This review summarizes the damages, symptoms, causal agents, and epidemic factors of major yam diseases. It also outlines a comprehensive disease control strategy that includes the use of resistant varieties, proper crop rotation, sanitation measures, and the application of agrochemicals and biocontrol agents. Additionally, this review addresses future perspectives on risk factors and knowledge gaps, aiming to serve as a reference for in-depth research into advanced disease monitoring and control technologies for yams. Rotation fallow is an effective way to overcome the obstacles associated with continuous cropping, being beneficial for the growth and development of crops. Soil micro-organisms are closely related to soil fertility, plant productivity, soil pathogenic bacteria, and crop health in agricultural ecosystems. To explore the effects of different rotation fallow modes on the diversity and functions of the soil bacterial community, a study was conducted in an arid area in the western foothills of the Greater Khingan Mountains. Using spring wheat variety Longmai 36 as the research material, this study systematically analyzed the changes and functional differences in soil physicochemical and biological characteristics, as well as microbial communities (endosphere, rhizosphere, and bulk soil) in spring wheat fields under five rotation fallow modes: Wheat2016–Wheat2017–Wheat2018(WWW), Wheat2016–Rape2017–Fallow2018(WRF), Wheat2016–Potato2017–Fallow2018(WPF), Wheat2016–Fallow2017–Rape2018(WFR), and Wheat2016–Fallow2017–Potato2018 (WFP). The results indicate that, compared to WWW, the soil urease activity, microbial biomass nitrogen content, and microbial biomass phosphorus content were significantly increased in the WFP mode (p < 0.05). In particular, the soil moisture content, organic matter, and total potassium content were increased by 6.88%, 3.34%, and 25.57%, respectively. The Shannon index and chao1 index of bulk soil (BS) and rhizosphere (RS) bacteria were significantly higher than those of endosphere (ER) bacteria (p < 0.05). Both ecological niche and rotation fallow modes affected the relative abundance of dominant bacteria, and the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria, such as Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Verrucomimicrobia, significantly increased in the rotation fallow modes. The complexity and stability of bacterial networks, and abundance of nitrogen-cycling-related functional taxa were significantly improved, while the abundance of pathogen-related functional taxa was significantly decreased. The differences in soil bacterial community structure were closely related to soil physicochemical properties. Compared to ER, BS and RS bacterial communities, which are more susceptible to soil physicochemical properties, and soil pH are key driving forces for bacterial community distribution. In summary, compared with continuous cropping, the rotation fallow mode is beneficial for conserving soil moisture and nutrients, stabilizing soil pH, (i.e., making the soil tend to be neutral), increasing the abundance of beneficial bacteria in the soil, enhancing the complexity and stability of microbial ecological networks, and increasing the abundance of nitrogen-cycling-related functional taxa, thus improving crop growth and development. Conservation tillage, a crucial method for protecting soil fertility, depends heavily on maintaining adequate straw coverage. The current method of straw coverage detection relies primarily on manual measurement, which is both time-consuming and laborious. This paper introduces a novel straw coverage detection approach based on an improved mask regional convolutional neural network (Mask R-CNN) algorithm. Several images of wheat straw-covered fields were taken, and the dataset was augmented using techniques like image inversion, contrast enhancement, Gaussian noise addition, and translation after cropping the original images. These fields use a crop rotation cycle of wheat and corn. Subsequently, the straw images were annotated using the Labelme annotation tool to obtain the available straw instance segmentation dataset. The Mask R-CNN algorithm was improved by refining the mask generation network structure through a multi-feature fusion strategy, which interweaves features from both the encoder and the mask generation network, enhancing the model's ability to capture detailed and shape information of the straw. Lastly, using the mask information output by the improved Mask R-CNN algorithm, the straw coverage was calculated by counting the proportion of pixels within each segmented region. In the results, compared to the original Mask R-CNN algorithm, our improved Mask R-CNN algorithm achieved an average improvement of 7.8% in segmentation accuracy, indicating that the improved Mask R-CNN algorithm offers superior segmentation performance. The implementation of cover crops in crop rotation is a suggested soil health practice. As cover crops are not harvested and sold, they do not directly provide monetary gain to producers. Therefore, it is imperative that planting cover crops does not negatively affect the subsequent cash crop. However, there is no overall consensus in the literature regarding the effects of cover crops on cash crop yield. To better understand the effects of cover crops on soybean growth and yield in Oklahoma soybean systems, trials were conducted in Bixby, OK, in 2019 and Perkins, OK, in 2019, 2020, and 2021. The objectives of these trials were to (1) determine how different cover crop mixes affect soybean growth parameters and (2) determine if cover crops significantly influence soybean seed yield. Treatments within the trials included six cover crops and a fallow treatment. Soybeans were planted after the termination of the cover crops. Yield and growth parameter data were collected after harvest. No significant differences or consistent trends were detected in the yield among treatments. While cover crops had a significant impact on the number of three- and four-bean pods, no other differences in the growth parameters existed, and they never translated into significant yield differences. Based on our data, cover crops would not benefit the overall cash crop production in the continuous cover crop soybean system in Oklahoma. However, the fact that cover crops did not consistently or significantly reduce soybean yield allows growers to explore other benefits, such as weed management or soil health improvement. Alfalfa is a perennial herbaceous forage legume that is significantly and adversely affected by monocropping. Crop rotation is the most effective measure to overcome continuous cropping obstacles. However, the mechanisms of how bacterial communities are affected and the potential links between these effects and cropping systems remain poorly understood. Based on a long-term field experiments with continuous alfalfa and forage crops with alfalfa rotation in the black soil region of the western Songnen Plain in Northeast China, the alterations in soil bacterial community structure using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and soil chemical properties and enzyme activities were analyzed. The alfalfa–forage oats–silage maize–alfalfa and alfalfa–silage maize–forage oats–alfalfa system significantly increase the levels of total phosphorus and available phosphorus, and promote the activities of acid phosphatase, β-glucosidase, leucine aminopeptidase, and N-acetyl-β-glucosaminidase in comparison to continuous alfalfa. While alfalfa crop rotation did not affect the α-diversity of soil bacteria, it significantly altered the bacterial community composition and structure. Some key taxa are significantly enriched in the crop rotation system soils, including Bacillus, Sphingobium, Paenibacillus, Hydrogenispora, Rubrobacter, Haliangium, and Rubellimicrobium. Additionally, crop rotation with alfalfa increased the stability and complexity of the soil bacterial co-occurrence network. Based on our findings, we recommend promoting the alfalfa–forage oats–silage maize–alfalfa and alfalfa–silage maize–forage oats–alfalfa rotation systems as ideal practices for overcoming the challenges associated with continuous cropping of alfalfa. These systems not only enhance soil nutrient content and enzyme activities but also foster a beneficial microbial community, ultimately improving soil functionality and crop performance. Phosphorus (P) is a key element for energy transfer, and biosynthesis of nucleic acids and cell membranes. The objective of this study was to investigate and quantify P utilization by different grain—maize (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L.)—and forage-cover crop brachiaria (Brachiaria ruziziensis) plant species in a low fertility highly weathered Oxisol. Two rates of P (25 and 50 mg kg−1) were applied by water-soluble P fertilizer (triple superphosphate) to each of 12 crop cycles, together with a control (no P added). Measurements included plant biomass production and P uptake for each cycle, and analysis of soil P fractions (including labile and non-labile) and enzymes activities (acid phosphatase and β-glucosidase) were done at the beginning of the experiment and after 3, 6, and 12 cycles. Total biomass production and P uptake/removal were significantly higher for brachiaria than maize and soybean, which was reflected in the P use efficiency (PUE), being higher for brachiaria (57%), compared with maize (26%) and soybean (21%). The higher PUE by brachiaria was partly attributed to higher levels of acid phosphatase and β-glucosidase activities which indicated enhanced biological activity and P cycling under brachiaria. Data from the control treatment clearly demonstrated that all three plant species mobilized stable/occluded fractions of P throughout the experiment, however, brachiaria could produce more using less P. The findings of this study indicated the inclusion of brachiaria in crop rotations as a forage or cover crop/green manure may enhance overall P use efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intensive global use of pesticides presents an escalating threat to human health, ecosystems, and water quality. To develop national and local environmental management strategies for mitigating pollution caused by pesticides, it is essential to understand the quantities, timing, and location of their application. This study aims to estimate the spatial distribution of pesticide use in an agricultural region of La Plata River basin in Uruguay. Estimates of pesticide use were made by surveying doses applied to each crop. This information was spatialized through identifying agricultural rotations using remote sensing techniques. The study identified the 60 major agricultural rotations in the region and mapped the use and application amount of the nine most significant active ingredients (glyphosate, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, flumioxazin, S-metolachlor, clethodim, flumetsulam, triflumuron, chlorantraniliprole, and fipronil). The results reveal that glyphosate is the most extensively used pesticide (53.5% of the area) and highest amount of use (> 1.44 kg/ha). Moreover, in 19% of the area, at least seven active ingredients are applied in crop rotations. This study marks the initial step in identifying rotations and estimating pesticide applications with high spatial resolution at a regional scale in agricultural regions of La Plata River basin. The results improve the understanding of pesticide spatial distribution based on data obtained from agronomists, technicians, and producers and provide a replicable methodological approach for other geographic and productive contexts. The limiting factors for the popularization of Sarepta mustard in Ukraine are the lack of developed and ecologically adapted zonal technologies for its cultivation, certain dogmatism and stereotypes of the majority of agricultural producers regarding the economic feasibility of introducing Sarepta mustard in crop rotations, as well as bias regarding the effectiveness of biologic elements in the production technologies of plant raw materials. A field experiment was conducted to improve the technology of growing Sarepta mustard. The experiment scheme included the following factors and their variants: Factor A (culture cultivation technology) was represented by variants of the traditional zonal mustard cultivation technology; biologized technology (rejection of mineral fertilizers and their replacement with organic preparations) and organic (replacement of mineral fertilizers and synthetic pesticides with organic preparations). Factor B represented different rates of crop sowing (from 2.0 to 3.0 million pieces of similar seeds per 1 ha with an interval of 0.5 million). The Prima mustard variety was sown in the experiment. Plots in the experiment were placed using the method of split plots with partial randomization. An increase in the crop sowing rate from 2.0 to 3.0 million units/ha leads to a deterioration in the value of most biometric indicators (plant height, leafiness) and all indicators of the crop structure. However, taking into account the discrete nature of the real number of plants preserved in the agrocenosis at the time of the study, the values of such indicators as the area of the assimilation apparatus and the leaf index, as well as the yield of conditioned seeds of the culture, had a curvilinear relationship: with an increase in the sowing rate from 2.0 to 2.5 million pcs./ha grew, and subsequently decreased. The norm of 2.5 million seeds per hectare is recognized as the most optimal seeding rate for all variants of cultivation technology. Also, the study noted a significant advantage of the biological and organic technology of Sarepta mustard cultivation over the traditional intensive one in terms of both biometric and structural indicators, as well as the level of yield of conditioned seeds and its quality indicators, first of all, the content of raw fat in the seeds. Crop diversification and the reduction of nitrogen (N) inputs are key issues in the EU for more sustainable agriculture. An experiment was set up in a semiarid rainfed Mediterranean system. Our hypothesis was that these challenges could be addressed by introducing new crops and using pig slurries (PSs). The experimental factors were N fertilization at sowing (with or without PS) combined (according to a split-block design) with N fertilization as topdressing (the control, two N mineral rates, and two N rates from PS). Barley, rapeseed, and pea performances were evaluated in two different crop sequences: (i) barley–rapeseed or rapeseed–barley after a fallow season, and (ii) barley–pea or pea–barley after a fallow season followed by a non-fertilized barley crop. The results of the four-year study demonstrated that under a spring drought risk, barley performed better than peas in terms of relative crop yield maintenance. After fallow, N can be saved while maintaining the yields and total biomass of barley and rapeseed. In the second crop sequence, maximum pea and barley yields were associated with a minimum topdressing of 60 or 120 kg mineral N ha−1, respectively. However, slurry fertilization at sowing also allowed the highest yields for barley. Rapeseed and peas can be introduced to reduce N fertilization inputs. However, the obtained yield plateau for pea and rapeseed (3 and 4 Mg ha−1, respectively) and the effect of a yield spring drought on pea yields (50% reduction) might be a constraint for the success of EU policies on crop diversification. Apple replant disease (ARD) may cause significant losses both in commercial orchards and in fruit tree nurseries. The negative effects of ARD may be limited by using biofumigation. The aim of the study was to assess the influence of this treatment on the biological properties of replanted soil in a tree nursery. In two-year experiment, apple trees of the 'Golden Delicious' cultivar were used. The trees were planted into soil from two sites. The soil from one site had not been used in a nursery before (crop rotation soil). The other soil had been used for the production of apple trees (replanted soil). Three species of plants were used in the replanted soil as a forecrop: French marigold (Tagetes patula), white mustard (Sinapis alba), and oilseed radish (Raphanus sativus var. oleifera). The following parameters were assessed in the experiment: the enzyme and respiratory activity of the soil, the total count of bacteria, fungi, oomycetes and actinobacteria in the soil, as well as the count and species composition of soil nematodes. The vegetative growth parameters of the apple trees were also assessed. The biological properties of the replanted soil were worse than those of the crop rotation soil. In the replanted soil, the organic matter content, enzyme and respiratory activity as well as the count of soil microorganisms were lower. The biofumigants, used as a forecrop on the replanted soil, significantly increased its enzyme activity and respiratory activity. Dehydrogenase activity increased more than twofold. Growth parameters of the trees were significantly improved. The height of the trees increased by more than 50%, and the leaf area, weight and total length of side shoots were higher as well. The density of nematodes in the replanted soil after biofumigation was significantly reduced, with a larger reduction in the marigold fumigated soil. Root rot caused by Fusarium spp. is a significant issue in the chickpea-growing regions of Montana. The specific Fusarium species responsible for the disease and their prevalence remain uncertain. A survey was conducted in 2020 and 2021 to identify Montana's Fusarium species associated with chickpea. Four hundred and twenty-six Fusarium isolates were recovered from symptomatic chickpea roots across ten counties in the state. Isolates were identified by comparing translation elongation factor 1-α (TEF1-α) sequences in the FUSARIUM-ID database. Among the recovered isolates, Fusarium oxysporum was the most prevalent species (33%), followed by F. acuminatum (21%), F. avenaceum (15%), F. redolens (14%), F. culmorum (6%), F. sporotrichioides (6%), Neocosmospora solani (6%), F. equiseti (2%), F. torulosum (0.9%), F. gamsii (0.8%), F. proliferatum (0.2%), F. pseudograminearum (0.2%), and F. brachygibbosum (0.1%). The aggressiveness of a subset of 51 isolates representing various Fusarium spp. was tested on chickpea cv. 'CDC Frontier'. A non-parametric variance analysis conducted on disease severity ranks indicated that F. avenaceum isolates were highly aggressive. This study reports for the first time that F. gamsii, F. proliferatum and F. brachygibbosum are causal agents of root rot in chickpea in the United States. This knowledge is invaluable for making informed decisions regarding crop rotation, disease management, and developing resistant chickpea varieties against economically significant Fusarium pathogens. Introduction: The effects of continuous cropping and rotation cropping, two important tobacco cultivation practices, on soil microbial communities at different stages remain unclear. Different planting patterns have been shown to influence soil physical and chemical properties, which in turn can affect the composition and diversity of soil microbial communities. Methods: In order to investigate the impact of different planting methods on soil microbial community structure, we selected two representative planting methods: continuous cropping (tobacco) and rotational cropping (tobacco-maize). These methods were chosen as the focal points of our research to explore the potential effects on soil microbial communities. High-throughput sequencing technology was employed to investigate the structure of soil microbial communities, as well as their relationships with soil environmental factors, by utilizing the 16S rRNA, ITS, and 18S genes. Furthermore, the interaction among microorganisms was explored through the application of the Random Matrix Theory (RMT) molecular ecological network approach. Results: There was no significant difference in a diversity, but significant difference in b diversity based on Jaccard distance test. Compared to continuous cropping, crop rotation significantly increased the abundance of beneficial prokaryotes Verrucomicrobia and Rhodanobacter. These findings indicate that crop rotation promotes the enrichment of Verrucomicrobia and Rhodanobacter in the soil microbial community. AP and NH4-N had a greater effect on the community structure of prokaryotes and fungi in tobacco soil, while only AP had a greater effect on the community structure of protist. Molecular ecological network analysis showed that the network robustness and Cohesion of rotation were significantly higher than that of continuous cropping, indicating that the complexity and stability of molecular ecological networks were higher in the rotational, and the microbial communities cooperated more effectively, and the community structure was more stable. Discussion: From this point of view, rotational cropping is more conducive to changing the composition of soil microbial community, enhancing the stability of microbial network structure, and enhancing the potential ecological functions in soil. Abstract Biochar is a nature-based solution for sustainable agriculture but its potential adoption in some parts of sub-Saharan Africa is still minimal. In this study, we evaluated the agronomic potential of maize stover biochar in cowpea-maize sequential cropping in Uganda under field conditions. The treatments included; the common farmer practice of no inorganic fertilizer and no biochar (CTR), inorganic fertilizer (F), 10 t ha−1 biochar (B10), 40 t ha−1 biochar (B40), 10 t ha−1 biochar + inorganic Fertilizer (FB10), and 40 t ha−1 biochar + inorganic Fertilizer (FB40), arranged in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The results showed that cowpea seed yield was not significantly affected by biochar and fertilizer application but the haulm yield was significantly improved only in FB40 treatment. Maize grain and stover yield was significantly improved only in the FB40 treatment but biochar showed a high potential to also improve yield even without inorganic fertilizer. The potential for biochar to improve maize yield either in the presence or absence of fertilizers could be attributed to the residual soil fertility from cowpeas. In both seasons, biochar significantly improved soil pH, EC, SOC, total N, available P, exchangeable K and Ca, irrespective of fertilizer application. However, exchangeable Mg did not significantly vary among the treatments. This study further revealed that in cowpea-maize rotation, optimum yield could also be possible with sole biochar application. Therefore, instead of burning the maize stovers after harvest, farmers should convert the residues into biochar and return it to the soil so as to achieve sustainable food systems. Conservation practices are encouraged to improve soil health and sustain agronomic crop production. Mehlich-3 is often used as a multi-nutrient extractant to determine soil fertility status. A study investigated the impacts of the conservation practices of gypsum, cover crops, and crop rotation on 28 Mehlich-3 extractable elements, of which 11 were considered plant nutrients, from soil at three midwestern US locations. Soil was collected from 0 to 15 and 15–30 cm depths 5 years after implementing the conservation practices. Treatments consisted of (1) with and without cereal rye (Secale cereale L.) winter cover, (2) continuous soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] vs. soybean-corn (Zea mays L.) rotation, and (3) annual gypsum application (0, 1.1, and 2.2 Mg ha−1). Differences were observed by site, depth, and conservation practice depending on the element evaluated. Minimal interactive effects were observed among treatments. The most consistent effect was observed for crop rotation across sites. Gypsum only affected the site with the greatest clay content, where more Ca and S were retained, and Mg and Mn displaced. Cover crop only affected elements at this high clay site, where different elements were positively or negatively affected. Results suggest that not one practice fits all, and optimum conservation practices must be tailored for the site.

The global population is increasing at a rapid pace, posing significant challenges to sustainable development and food security. This review paper examines the advantages and challenges of organic farming as a potential solution to address the pressing issues in modern agriculture and food production. Organic farming offers a range of benefits, including improved soil fertility, higher profitability, reduced external input usage, land reclamation, improved market access, and enhanced farmer capacity and self-reliance. Organic farming practices prioritize environmental sustainability by reducing chemical usage and reliance on biological methods of pest control, as well as enhancing biodiversity, which strengthens ecological balance and resilience against pests and diseases. However, organic farming also faces challenges that need to be addressed for its widespread adoption. These challenges include uncertainty surrounding legislative environments, psychological and sociological costs of conversion, financial risks during the transition period, securing marketing channels for organic produce, and diminishing profit margins. Efforts should be made to provide farmers with the necessary support, including technical assistance, subsidies, and access to markets, to overcome these challenges. Despite the challenges, the potential of organic farming in promoting sustainable agriculture and ensuring a secure food system cannot be overlooked. It offers a natural and environmentally friendly approach to food production, prioritizing the health of both humans and the ecosystem.

Abstract Background Crop rotation changes crop species and the associated management strategies, significantly influencing soil fertility and soil microbial communities. Interactions among the species in microbial communities are important for soil nutrient cycling. Yet, the contribution of soil microbial interactions to crop yield and soil nitrogen-cycle function under wheat–maize and wheat–soybean rotation conversion remains unclear. An 8-year field experiment was conducted to investigate the impact of simple [8-year wheat–maize rotation (8WM) and 8-year wheat–soybean rotation (8WS)] and diverse cropping systems [4-year wheat–soybean followed by 4-year wheat–maize rotation (4WS4WM) and 4-year wheat–maize followed by 4-year wheat–soybean rotation (4WM4WS)] on crop yield, soil properties, bacterial–fungal co-occurrence networks and nitrogen functional potentials. The abundances of genes with nitrogen fixation (nifH), nitrification (AOB and nxrA) and denitrification (narG, nirK, norB and nosZ) potentials were quantified and bacterial and fungal communities were characterized. Results 4WS4WM led to higher succeeding maize yields and lower bacterial–fungal network complexity, nitrogen fixation potentials and denitrifying potentials than 8WM. Meanwhile, 4WM4WS exhibited higher succeeding wheat and soybean yields, network complexity and lower nitrifying potentials than 8WS. The ecological cluster with the most nitrifying and denitrifying bacterial species (Module#5) and that with the least species (Module#3) dominated the potentials of nitrogen fixation, nitrification and denitrification and succeeding maize yields in 4WS4WM and 8WM. Module#4 with the highest abundances of nitrifying bacteria (Nitrosomonadaceae) and Module#2 with the most species dominated the nitrifying potentials and succeeding wheat and soybean yields in 4WM4WS and 8WS. Soil water content, organic carbon, dissolved organic carbon, NO3 − and pH were key drivers influencing Module#3 and Module#5, while only NH4 + significantly affected Module#2 and Module#4. Conclusions These findings demonstrate the importance of ecological clusters within soil microbial network in regulating crop yield and soil nitrogen cycling, and identify specific ecological clusters dominating nitrogen functional potentials in wheat–maize and wheat–soybean rotations, offering science-based recommendations for sustainable crop rotation practices. Abstract Background Guangxi is the leading sugarcane-producing area in China. Due to the Panama disease outbreak in banana gardens, sugarcane and banana rotation was recommended. A field experiment with the newly released sugarcane cultivar Zhongzhe 1 (ZZ1) was conducted to understand the role of the sugarcane–banana rotation system in shaping the rhizosphere microbiota. Fields in the region possess characteristics of red laterite soil. Results Using Illumina HiSeq sequencing to analyze soil samples’ 16S rRNA V3-V4 region, the preceding banana rotation field had relatively greater bacterial diversity than the monoculture sugarcane field. Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, Actinobacteria, and Acidobacteria were the dominant phyla, with distinct taxa enriched in each environment. However, the preceding sugarcane monoculture field enriched functional groups related to nitrogen fixation and cellulolysis. Network analysis highlighted contrasting network structures between sugarcane and banana rhizospheres, suggesting differential stability and susceptibility to environmental influences. Furthermore, correlations between soil properties and bacterial alpha-diversity underscored the influence of preceding crops on rhizosphere microbial communities. Conclusion This research enhances our understanding of crop rotation effects on soil microbial ecology and provides insights into optimizing agricultural practices for enhanced soil health and crop productivity.
