Aerosols and Surface Albedo (SA) are critical in balancing Earth's energy budget. With the changes of surface types and corresponding SA in recent years, an intriguing yet unresolved question emerges: how does Aerosol Direct Radiative Effect (ADRE) and its warming effect (AWE) change with varying SA? Here we investigate the critical SA marking ADRE shift from negative to positive under varying aerosol properties, along with the impact of SA on the ADRE. Results show that AWE often occurs in mid-high latitudes or regions with high-absorptivity aerosols, with critical SA ranging from 0.18 to 0.96. Thinner and/or more absorptive aerosols more readily cause AWE statistically. In regions where the SA trend is significant, SA has decreased at −0.012/decade, causing a −0.2 ± 0.17 W/m²/decade ADRE change, with the most pronounced changes in the Northern Hemisphere during June-July. As SA declines, we highlight enhanced ADRE cooling or reduced AWE, indicating aerosols' stronger cooling, partly countering the energy rise from SA reduction. This study shows that decreased surface albedo leads to significant cooling from the aerosol direct radiative effect, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, moderating the expected warming from surface albedo reduction. This paper presents a new algorithm to solve the optimal reconfiguration problem in distribution networks, using the algorithm called Improved Simulated Annealing combined with Hybrid Cooling (ISA-HC) and Selective Space Search, which leverages the capabilities of the Open Distribution System Simulator (OpenDSS) software and the selective space search concept to enhance performance and reduce the search space. The ISA-HC algorithm determines an adequate starting point for the temperature and initial solution according to the size of the system. For adequate cooling, a three-stage cooling approach was employed to achieve effective cooling, combining two methods widely used in the literature. Overall, the ISA-HC algorithm is a promising method for solving the optimal reconfiguration problem in distribution networks. The algorithm was tested on the systems of 5, 33, 69, and 94 buses and compared to other existing methods in the literature. Post‐exercise hot (HWI) and cold (CWI) water immersion are popular strategies used by athletes in a range of sporting contexts, such as enhancing recovery or adaptation. However, prolonged heating bouts increase neuroendocrine responses that are associated with perceptions of fatigue. Fourteen endurance‐trained runners performed three trials consisting of two 45‐min runs at 95% lactate threshold on a treadmill separated by 6 h of recovery. Following the first run, participants completed one of HWI (30 min, 40°C), CWI (15 min, 14°C) or control (CON, 30 min rest in ambient conditions) in a randomised order. Perceived effort and recovery were measured using ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and the Acute Recovery and Stress Scale (ARSS), whilst physiological responses including venous concentrations of a range of neuroendocrine markers, superficial femoral blood flow, heart rate and rectal temperature were measured. Exercise increased neuroendocrine responses of interleukin‐6, adrenaline and noradrenaline (all P < 0.001). Additionally, perceptions of overall recovery (P < 0.001), mental performance capacity (P = 0.02), physical performance capability (P = 0.01) and emotional balance (P = 0.03) were reduced prior to the second run. However, there was no effect of condition on these variables (P > 0.05), nor RPE (P = 0.68), despite differences in rectal temperature, superficial femoral blood flow following the first run, and participants' expected recovery prior to the intervention (all P < 0.001). Therefore, athletes may engage in post‐exercise hot or cold‐water immersion without negatively impacting moderate‐intensity training sessions performed later the same day. Thermomechanical cyber–physical testing enables two-way thermal coupling between a numerical and an experimental subsystem. The interactions between the numerical model and the physical specimen occur through transfer systems, which enforce interface conditions. Thus, efficient control methodologies are necessary to achieve the desired interface interaction through thermal actuators with minimal error. This study introduces a novel thermal transfer system that imposes distributed cooling (or heating) thermal loads on a physical subsystem. First, the thermal actuator is identified considering switching-mode continuous dynamics for heating and cooling conditions. A switching-mode estimation algorithm is adopted to estimate the operating thermal cycle of the actuator in real-time. A control system is developed to experimentally impose the desired temperature and reduce tracking error (i.e., the error between the desired and actual temperature) under different thermal cycles. The identification and control of the thermal transfer system are then validated through a set of experiments considering different temperature rates of change. Metalworking fluids (MWFs) play a crucial role in machining processes by lubricating and cooling cutting tools, reducing friction, and improving overall machining efficiency. These fluids can be classified into various types, including cutting oils, water-based fluids, and semi-synthetic or synthetic fluids. Cutting oils are often mineral-based, providing excellent lubrication in heavy-duty applications. Water-based fluids, on the other hand, are more environmentally friendly and commonly used in light to moderate machining operations. Semi-synthetic and synthetic fluids offer a balance between performance and eco-friendliness, incorporating additives to enhance their properties. Proper selection and management of MWFs are essential for optimizing tool life, surface finish, and overall productivity in metal machining applications. Research has shown that the cost of cutting fluid in machining constitutes 17% of the total production cost. In the same research, it was stated that the cutting tool cost was around 4%. This review provides an overview of the current advancements in sustainable MWFs within machining applications. It explores state-of-the-art technologies, formulations, and practices aimed at minimizing environmental impact while maintaining optimal performance in metalworking processes. Forecasting warm‐sector rainfall (WR) remains a major challenge, primarily due to weak synoptic forcing. Through cloud‐permitting numerical simulations, in addition to direct triggering mechanism from low‐level jets, we identify the important role of gravity waves in a heavy WR event in South China via convective preconditioning. The preconditioning manifests as mid‐level moistening and destabilization with wave‐like variations. This process is driven by fast‐propagating (∼24 m s−1) n = 2 waves, associated with lower‐tropospheric ascents and upper‐tropospheric descents. Waves are generated during the evolution of northern frontal rainfall (FR). As FR intensifies, surges in low‐level diabatic cooling mainly resulting from microphysical processes, trigger n = 2 waves, which further precondition the environment along their path. In contrast, a sensitivity experiment involving stably developing FR fails to reproduce the preconditioning process by waves and the subsequent occurrence of WR. Overall, our study illuminates a new pathway through which FR significantly influences WR via gravity waves. Plain Language Summary: During the rainy season, the coastal regions of South China frequently experience heavy rainfall, leading to significant socio‐economic losses. Unfortunately, understanding the mechanisms underlying this heavy rainfall and accurately predicting it remains a great challenge, as it often occurs without evident synoptic influences such as fronts and low‐pressure vortex. Another rainband occasionally forms to the north of the coastal heavy rainfall through frontal lifting. The northern inland frontal rainfall could be considered a potential contributor to the initiation of coastal heavy rainfall, yet no concrete connection has been established until now. Our research reveals that this frontal rainband can generate low‐frequency gravity waves that have a substantial influence on coastal heavy rainfall. These waves primarily result from the sharp cooling associated with the frontal rainband, featuring lower‐tropospheric upward motions. They are capable to travel considerable distances ahead of the frontal rainband at high speeds. Along their journey, they moisten and destabilize the cloud environment ahead of the frontal rainband, thereby favoring the occurrence of coastal rainfall. This paper investigates the theoretical and experimental cooling performance of textile materials utilizing radiative cooling technology. By applying Kirchhoff's law, the emissivity of surfaces is determined, revealing that materials with high transmission values can achieve comparable cooling performance to those with high reflection values. Notably, materials exhibiting moderate reflectance and transmittance in the solar range tend to absorb minimal solar radiation, thus offering high theoretical cooling performance. However, practical applications like building envelopes or clothing present challenges due to the impact of background radiation on overall cooling capacity. Despite their intrinsic cooling properties, a significant portion of solar radiation is transmitted, complicating matters as the background can significantly affect overall cooling performance. This study provides a solution that accounts for the influence of background materials. Based on spectral data, various background materials and their impact on different semi-transparent comparison materials can be considered, and cooling performance can be simulated. This enables the simulation of cooling performance for various application scenarios and facilitates comparisons between transparent, semi-transparent, and opaque textile materials. In this study we explore aerosol–cloud interactions in liquid-phase clouds over eastern China (EC) and its adjacent ocean (ECO) using the WRF-Chem–SBM model with four-dimensional assimilation. The results show that our simulations and analyses based on each vertical layer provide a more detailed representation of the aerosol–cloud relationship compared to the column-based analyses which have been widely conducted previously. For aerosol activation, cloud droplet number concentration (Nd) generally increases with aerosol number concentration (Naero) at low Naero and decreases with Naero at high Naero. The main difference between EC and ECO is that Nd increases faster in ECO than EC at low Naero due to abundant water vapor, whereas at high Naero , when aerosol activation in ECO is suppressed, Nd in EC shows significant fluctuation due to strong surface effects (longwave radiation cooling and terrain uplift) and intense updrafts. Cloud liquid water content (CLWC) increases with Nd , but the increase rate gradually slows down for precipitating clouds, while CLWC increases and then decreases in non-precipitating clouds. Higher Nd and CLWC can be found in EC than in ECO, and the transition-point Nd value at which CLWC in non-precipitating clouds changes from increasing to decreasing is also higher in EC. Aerosol activation is strongest at moderate Naero , but CLWC increases relatively fast at low Naero. ECO cloud processes are more limited by cooling and humidification, whereas strong and diverse surface and atmospheric processes in EC allow intense cloud processes to occur under significant warming or drying conditions. Objective: To determine the effectiveness of phase-change-material mattress (PCM) during transportation of newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Study design: Randomized controlled trial of newborns with HIE from June 2016 to December 2019. Patients were randomized to transport with PCM or without PCM (control) when transferred to a cooling center in northern Vietnam. Primary outcome measure was mortality rate, secondary outcomes including temperature control and adverse effects. Result: Fifty-Two patients in PCM-group and 61 in control group. Median rectal temperature upon arrival was 34.5 °C (IQR 33.5–34.8) in PCM-group and 35.1 °C (IQR 34.5–35.9) in control group (p = 0.023). Median time from birth to reach target temperature was 5.0 ± 1.4 h and 5.5 ± 1.2 h in the respective groups (p = 0.065). 81% of those transported with PCM versus 62% of infants transported without (p = 0.049) had reached target temperature within the 6-h timeframe. There was no record of overcooling (< 32 °C) in any of the groups. The was no difference in mortality rate between the two groups (33% and 34% respectively (p > 0.05)). Conclusion: Phase-change-material can be used as a safe and effective cooling method during transportation of newborns with HIE in low-resource settings. Gravity-assisted separation heat pipes (GSHPs) are extensively utilized in telecommunications base stations and data centers. To ensure year-round cooling, integrating GSHPs directly with a vapor compression refrigeration system is a viable solution. It is unavoidable that the refrigeration system's lubricant will infiltrate the heat pipe loop, thereby affecting its thermal performance. This paper examines the performance of a GSHP, which features a water-cooled plate heat exchanger as the condenser and a finned-tube heat exchanger as the evaporator, when the working fluid (R134a) is contaminated with a lubricant (POE, Emkarate RL-46H). The findings are compared with those from a system free of lubricant. The experimental outcomes indicate that the presence of lubricant degrades the heat transfer efficiency, particularly when the filling ratio is adequate and no significant superheat is observed at the evaporator's outlet. This results in a 3.86% increase in heat transfer resistance. When the charge of the working fluid is suboptimal, the average heat transfer resistance remains relatively constant at a 3% lubricant concentration yet increases to approximately 5.27% at a 4–6% lubricant concentration, and further to 12.32% at a 9% lubricant concentration. Concurrently, as the lubricant concentration fluctuates between 3% and 9%, the oil circulation ratio (OCR) varies from 0.02% to 0.11%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cu isotope ratios have been widely applied to fingerprinting metal sources, tracking fluid pathways, and tracing mineralization processes, for which knowledge of isotope fractionation is required. This paper presents new experimental calibration data of Cu isotope fractionation between Cu-bearing minerals (native Cu and cuprite) and Cl-bearing hydrothermal fluids at 25–800 °C and 0.1–200 MPa. The experiments were performed either using a polytetrafluoroethylene (Teflon) beaker on a hotplate, a rapid heat/rapid quench argon cold seal pressure vessel (RH/RQ Ar-CSPV), or a large volume fluid reactor, which enabled fluid sampling ex situ (the former two) and in situ (the latter). Three setups were designed to investigate Cu isotope fractionation (Δ65Cufluid-mineral): (1) associated with Cu(I) dissolution, Cu(I) disproportionation as well as oxidation of Cu(0) (native copper) and Cu(I) in Cu ± Cu2O + HCl systems at temperatures of up to 800 °C and pressures of up to 200 MPa; (2) related to Cu-Au alloying processes in the Cu + NaCl/HCl system at 600 °C and 150 MPa; (3) to evaluate the influences of different sampling techniques (ex situ vs. in situ) and superimposed cooling processes. The selected system is Cu2O + NaCl + 0.2 m HAc/NaAc (pH-buffer), and runs were conducted at 200–250 °C and 20 MPa. Δ65Cufluid-mineral shows the least variation during solid separation from source fluids, generally <0.16 ± 0.03‰. Positive Δ65Cufluid-mineral values are found in most runs, excluding cuprite dissolution in NaCl/ HCl solutions at 200–250 °C, 20 MPa, and 800 °C, 200 MPa. Cu oxidative leaching into Cu(I) results in decreasing Δ65CuCu(I)-Cu(0) values from 0.12 ± 0.05% to 0.07 ± 0.05%, and –0.30 ± 0.03‰ at 25, 50, and 200 °C, respectively. In contrast, Cu dissolution at high temperatures (600–800 °C) leads to Cu(I)-containing quench fluids and subsequent native Cu precipitates. Both products are enriched in heavy isotopes by up to 5‰, caused by preferential enrichment of 65Cu at the surface layer during the alloying-induced diffusion transport process. Cuprite oxidative leaching in HCl leads to fluids enriched in Cu(II), and the corresponding Δ65CuCu(II)-Cu(I) increases from 0.52 ± 0.04‰ at 25 °C to 0.89 ± 0.02‰ at 50 °C. Fluids are enriched with light isotopes (63Cu) during cuprite dissolution at 200, 250, and 800 °C, i.e., 0–0.55 ± 0.04‰ lower than the precursor. At 250–300 °C, Cu(I) disproportionation into Cu(II) and Cu(0) dominates the observed isotope fractionation, yielding Δ65Cufluid-Cu2O up to 0.59 ± 0.03‰ and Δ65CuCu(0)-Cu2O up to –0.28 ± 0.02‰. Rapid cooling (3–25 K s–1) relative to slow cooling (0.014 K s–1) can cause phase separation as well as significant isotope fractionation, particularly if fluids cool from an intermediate high temperature to ambient temperature (e.g., from 200–300 to 25 °C), which highlights the importance of kinetic processes that may potentially alter the isotope composition of natural ore-forming fluids. This study compared the quality of hand-shaken green tea prepared through rapid and natural cooling methods. Cooling is crucial in preserving green tea's flavor, aroma, and nutritional components. In the rapid cooling method, green tea is freshly brewed at an initial temperature of 95 °C for 25 min, and then rapidly cooled to 18 °C for 25 min. Conversely, the natural cooling method involves brewing tea at the same initial temperature and time, but allowing it to cool gradually to 30 °C over approximately 4–5 h at room temperature. This study's findings indicate that the rapid cooling method produced green tea with a more vibrant color and improved clarity versus the natural cooling method. Sensory analysis revealed that the taste and aroma of the hand-shaken green tea prepared using rapid cooling were perceived to be more refreshing and invigorating. However, the natural cooling method preserved a higher level of chemical components, including individual catechin caffeine, total polyphenol, soluble solids, reducing sugar, and total tannins. The essential amino acid content of the rapidly and naturally cooled green tea infusions was 6.85 and 13.55 μg/mL, respectively. The γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) content was 439.82 and 457.31 μg/mL, respectively. This study's findings suggest that rapid cooling during the preparation of hand-shaken green tea enhances its overall quality. In Korea, greenhouses are traditionally used for crop cultivation in the winter. However, due to diverse consumer demands, climate change, and advancements in agricultural technology, more farms are aiming for year-round production. Nonetheless, summer cropping poses challenges such as high temperatures, humidity from the monsoon season, and low light conditions, which make it difficult to grow crops. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the best planting time for summer tomato cultivation in a Korean semi-closed greenhouse that can be both air-conditioned and heated. The experiment was conducted in the Advanced Digital Greenhouse, built by the National Institute of Agricultural Sciences. The tomato seedlings were planted in April, May, and June 2022. Growth parameters such as stem diameter, flowering position, stem growth rate, and leaf shape index were measured, and harvesting was carried out once or twice weekly per treatment from 65 days to 265 days after planting. The light use efficiency and yield per unit area at each planting time was measured. Tomatoes planted in April showed a maximum of 42.9% higher light use efficiency for fruit production and a maximum of 33.3% higher yield. Furthermore, the growth form of the crops was closest to the reproductive growth type. Therefore, among April, May, and June, April is considered the most suitable planting time for summer cultivation, which is expected to contribute to reducing labor costs due to decreased workload and increasing farm income through increased yields. Future research should explore optimizing greenhouse microclimates and developing crop varieties tailored for summer cultivation to further enhance productivity and sustainability in year-round agricultural practices. High temperatures have dramatic negative effects on interconnect performance. In a bus, whenever the state transitions from "0" to "1", or "0" to "1", joule heating causes the temperature to rise. A low-power error-correcting cooling (LPECC) code, introduced in Chee et al. (IEEE Trans Inf Theory 64:3062–3085, 2018), is a coding scheme which can be used to control the peak temperature, the average power consumption of on-chip buses and error-correction for the transmitted information, simultaneously. High-speed turbulence induces significant aero-optical effects that severely disrupt the functionality of imaging systems of hypersonic vehicles. In this study, the aero-optical correction of various jet cooling modes is investigated using a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)-like seeker model and the imaging impact of high-speed flow field and flow control on the optical window is analyzed by the Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES) method. The findings reveal that a jet mode parallel to the window exhibits better cooling effectiveness compared to a perpendicular jet mode along the body axis; however, it introduces additional wavefront distortion, leading to degraded imaging quality. Although micro-vortex generators (MVGs) can reduce density fluctuations near the window from a refractive index perspective, they do not effectively mitigate wavefront distortion or improve window cooling efficiency. Finally, incorporating suction control, a comprehensive flow control solution, significantly improves the flow field structure near the window, resulting in a more uniform temperature distribution and reduced wavefront distortion. Applying this flow control method results in a 14.7% reduction in wavefront distortion at 3 Ma and an approximately 20% maximum value reduction at 5 Ma. This study proposes a novel and comprehensive flow control method to effectively mitigate the aero-optical effect in hypersonic flows, providing a new avenue for subsequent researchers in this field. In this study, an energy management model for electric vehicles including the entire vehicle such as the cabin, electric motors, battery, and the heating–cooling system was prepared. The heating and cooling processes for electric vehicles were run according to the internationally recognized driving cycles as well as at constant speeds to investigate them under different ambient conditions. The heating–cooling processes were managed in line with the cabin temperature target determined by considering the comfort conditions. The energy consumption of each of the system elements and the system in the heating–cooling process in electric vehicles was analyzed. Under different operating conditions, the variation of cabin temperature with time, instantaneous power, and cumulative energy consumption was calculated. The effect of heating and cooling processes on energy consumption, charging rate, and range were analyzed and interpreted. The results showed that the heating–cooling system for the heating process consumed more energy when the ambient temperature decreased, and the charge consumption ratio as well as the range deformation rate increased to about 30% when the ambient temperature was –10 °C. Similarly, the heating–cooling system for the cooling process consumed more energy when the ambient temperature increased, and the charge consumption ratio as well as the range deformation rate reached up to 40% when the ambient temperature was 40 °C. When the outdoor conditions were close to the thermal comfort temperature of 23 °C inside the cabin, the total energy consumption and the range deformation rates were reduced to less than 10%. The current study aims to investigate the effect of the hybrid thermal tensioning technique transient thermal tensioning and trailing intensive cooling (TTT–TIC) on residual stresses and distortion of titanium Ti-5Al-2.5Sn and stainless steel 304 gas tungsten arc welded (GTAW) joints using Nb–Cu composite filler. The two preheating oxyacetylene torches are used for in-situ heating at TTT condition whereas compressed CO2 has been employed for in-situ trailing cooling of weld at TIC condition. The residual stresses and distortion have been evaluated at the distance between preheating torches (DA) in the case of TTT, the distance between the cooling source and the welding torch (DB) in case of TIC, and optimal distances DA and DB in case of hybrid TTT–TIC condition. The minimum values of tensile residual stresses and distortion of 98 MPa and 0.904 mmm on SS side, and 84 MPa and 0.425 mm on Ti side have been obtained at TTT–TIC condition. A significant percentage reduction in tensile residual stresses has been attained at novel TTT–TIC of 60% on SS side, and 63.48% on Ti side than conventional GTAW, 14.7% on SS side and 18.4% on Ti side than TIC condition, 52.20% on SS side and 56.02% on Ti side than TTT condition at hole depth of 0.3 mm on both plates. In the case of TTT–TIC, a percentage reduction in transverse distortion of 43.61, 24.81, and 32.09% have been achieved over the conventional GTAW, TIC, and TTT conditions respectively. In case of longitudinal distortion, the 57.07% reduction in distortion on Ti and 45.87% on SS side under the TTT–TIC method have been achieved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A granular gas composed of monodisperse spherical particles was studied in microgravity experiments in a drop tower. Translations and rotations of the particles were extracted from optical video data. Equipartition is violated, the rotational degrees of freedom were excited only to roughly 2/3 of the translational ones. After stopping the mechanical excitation, we observed granular cooling of the ensemble for a period of three times the Haff time, where the kinetic energy dropped to about 5% of its initial value. The cooling rates of all observable degrees of freedom were comparable, and the ratio of rotational and translational kinetic energies fluctuated around a constant value. Time series of radiative cooling of the upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere (UMLT) by carbon dioxide (CO2) are examined for evidence of trends over 20 years. Radiative cooling rates in K day−1 provided by the SABER instrument are converted to time series of infrared power radiated from three distinct layers between 0.1 hPa and 0.0001 hPa (65–105 km). Linear regression against time and a predictor for solar variability provides estimates of the trend in exiting longwave radiation (ELR) from these layers. Trends in ELR are not significantly different from zero at 95% or 99% confidence in each layer. These results demonstrate energy conservation in the UMLT on decadal time scales and show that the UMLT continues to radiate the same amount of energy it receives despite cooling and contracting over two decades. These results are enabled by the long‐term stability of the SABER instrument calibration. Plain Language Summary: The Earth's upper mesosphere and lower thermosphere (UMLT) is the region between approximately 65 and 105 km in altitude. Infrared radiation emitted by CO2 is a fundamental component of the energy budget of the UMLT. Carbon dioxide (CO2) is increasing in this region. The amount of infrared energy emitted by CO2, over time, must balance the amount of energy from sunlight that is absorbed in the UMLT. Observations from orbiting satellites over the past two decades have shown that the temperature in the UMLT is decreasing due to the increasing CO2. A decreasing temperature implies a decrease in infrared energy emitted by an object. Energy conservation, however, requires that the amount of infrared energy radiated from the UMLT balance the amount of energy received, regardless of the temperature. In this paper we show that there is no significant long‐term change with time (i.e., zero trend) in the infrared energy emitted from the UMLT even though the UMLT temperature has been decreasing for the last 20 years (and longer) due to increasing CO2. This result confirms that energy is conserved in a cooling and contracting UMLT. The cutting fluid plays an important role in lubrication, cooling, chip removal, and rust protection in mechanical manufacturing. The waste-cutting fluid can pose a threat to the water environment and even human health. The minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) technology can meet the requirements of clean manufacturing, and it has been widely recognized as a replacement for traditional flood-cutting technology. As an emerging green cutting technology, it has broad application prospects. The latest progress in MQL machining technology is reviewed, and the cutting performance of MQL is elaborated in this article. Firstly, the composition and implementation form of the MQL system were elaborated. The impact of the MQL system parameters on cutting performance was also illustrated in this part. Secondly, the combination of MQL technology, low-temperature technology synergistic effect of additives, and the atomization and hardware improvement of MQL was introduced. Thirdly, the cutting performance of MQL technology on cutting force, cutting temperature, residual stress, tool wear, and surface quality was analyzed. Finally, the limitations of MQL technology were discussed, and its development direction was prospected. It provides suggestions for the engineering application of MQL technology. The spatiotemporal evolution of the flow structures and coolant coverage of double-row film cooling with upstream forward jets and downstream backward jets, having a significant impact on film-cooling performance, is studied using the simplified thermal lattice Boltzmann method (STLBM). Moreover, the effect of the inclination angle of downstream backward jets is considered. The high-performance simulations of film cooling have been conducted by using our verified in-house solver. Results show that special flow structures, such as a sand dune-shaped protrusion, appear in double-row film cooling with upstream forward jets and downstream backward jets, which is mainly because of the blockage effect resulting from the coolant jet with backward injection. The interaction among structures results in the generation of an anti-counterrotating vortex pair (anti-CVP). The anti-CVP with the downwash motion can result in the attachment of coolant to the bottom wall, which promotes the stability and lateral coverage of coolant film. The momentum and heat transport are strengthened as the backward jet is injected into the boundary layer of the mainstream. Although the downstream evolution of the backward jet is not very smooth, its core attaches closely to the bottom wall due to the downwash motion of anti-CVP. Moreover, there is an obvious backflow zone shown in the trailing edge of the downstream backward jet with a large inclination angle. The obvious backflow makes the coolant attach to the bottom wall well. Therefore, the film cooling effectiveness is improved as the inclination angle of the downstream backward jet varies from α d o w n = 135 ° to α d o w n = 155 ° , with a constant blowing ratio of B R = 0.5 . In addition, the fluctuation of the bottom wall's temperature is weak due to the stable coverage of the coolant layer under α d o w n = 155 ° . The film-cooling performance with an inclination angle of α d o w n = 155 ° is the best among all the cases studied in this work. This work provides essential insights into film cooling with backward coolant injection and contributes to obtaining a complete understanding of film cooling with backward coolant injection. While traditional air conditioning systems serve their purpose, radiation air conditioning systems provide several benefits, including improved comfort, higher energy efficiency, and lower initial costs. Nevertheless, the heat exchange capacity per unit area of the radiation plate in such systems is somewhat restricted, which directly affects their practical engineering applications. To address this, experimental investigations were undertaken to examine the impact of cold/hot water supply temperature, water flow velocity, and surface emissivity of radiant panels on their heat transfer characteristics for both summer cooling and winter heating. The findings highlight the significant influence of water supply temperature, flow rate, and surface emissivity on the heat transfer properties of the radiant plates. It is worth noting that adjustments to the water flow rate and surface emissivity impose limitations on enhancing the radiant plate heat transfer performance. For instance, in summer, the heat transfer coefficient of the roughly machined light alumina plate radiant panel was determined by fitting the experimental heat transfer data against characteristic temperatures. Specifically, during cooling, the total heat transfer coefficient of the radiant plate was calculated as 6.77 W/(m2·K), comprising a thermal coefficient of 5.41 W/(m2·K) and a convective heat transfer coefficient of 4.17 W/(m2·K). Conversely, during winter heating, the total heat transfer coefficient of the radiant plate increased to 8.94 W/(m2·K), with a radiation heat transfer coefficient of 6.13 W/(m2·K) and a convective heat transfer coefficient of 3.79 W/(m2·K). A solar-powered combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) plant integrated with a water electrolysis unit is investigated in terms of energy, exergy, and exergo-economic (3E) assessments. A comprehensive parametric study and optimization is conducted following the thermodynamic and exergo-economic assessment of the proposed system to evaluate the key performance parameters of the system for efficiency and economic factors. This system employs a heliostat field and a receiver tower by taking advantage of thermal energy from the sun and produces a continuous energy supply with an integrated phase-change material (PCM) tank to store the heat. In addition, a supercritical CO2 Rankine cycle (RC), an ejector refrigeration cooling (ERC) system, and a PEM water electrolyzer are coupled to produce cooling, heating, power, and hydrogen. Thermodynamic analysis indicates that the system exergy efficiency and energy efficiency are improved to 33.50 % and 40.61 % , respectively, while the total cost rate is 2875.74   U S D / h and the total product cost per exergy unit is 25.65   U S D / G J . Additionally, the system produces a net generated power, heating load, and cooling load of 11.70 , 13.92 , and 2.60   M W , respectively, and a hydrogen production rate of 12.95 g / s . A two-objective optimization approach utilizing a non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA) was performed, demonstrating that the system's ideal design point offers a cost rate of 1263.35   U S D / h and an exergetic efficiency of 34.17 % . The primary objective pursued in this research is the creation and thorough evaluation of an inventive cooling system designed to uphold optimal temperatures within the batteries employed in electric vehicles. Nowadays, the prevailing equipment underpinning electrical motion hinges on Lithium-Ion cells. These cells frequently necessitate the expeditious delivery of substantial power, thereby giving rise to a consequential generation of heat. Consequently, there is an emergence of elevated operational temperatures, potentially causing noteworthy declines in battery performance, or, in extreme cases, operational failures. Furthermore, deviating from the recommended temperature range (20–40 °C) significantly expedites the aging process of the battery and elevates the probability of premature malfunction. In response to these crucial challenges, the implementation of a battery thermal management system assumes a pivotal role in maximizing battery efficiency. Within the framework of this investigation, we propose the adoption of a cooling system founded on a three-dimensional pulsating heat pipe as the designated thermal management technology for a battery pack. The preliminary phase of our study involved the assessment of the suggested pulsating heat pipe's performance. Following this, the efficacy of the pulsating heat pipe is subjected to rigorous scrutiny through practical experimentation on an authentic electric battery. Array jet impingement cooling is a significant technology of enhanced heat dissipation which is fit for high heat flux flow with large area. It is gradually applied to the cooling of electronic devices. However, The research on the nozzle array mode and the uniformity of the cooling surface still has deficiencies. Therefore, the influence of heat flux, inlet temperature, jet height, array mode, and diversion structure on jet impingement cooling performance and temperature distribution uniformity is analyzed through numerical calculation. The results show that the heat transfer coefficient of jet impingement cooling increases linearly with the increment of heat flux and inlet temperature. With the increment of the ratio of jet height to nozzle diameter (H/d), the heat transfer coefficient increases first and then decreases, that is, there is an optimal H/d, which makes the heat transfer performance of the array jet impact cooling best. The temperature uniformity of array jet impact cooling is greatly affected by array mode. The improvement effect of nozzle array mode on temperature uniformity is ranked as sequential >staggered >shield >elliptical array. The overall temperature uniformity and heat transfer coefficient are increased by 5.88% and 7.29% compared with the elliptical array. The heat transfer performance can be further improved by adding a flow channel to the in-line array layout, in which the heat transfer coefficient is increased by 6.53% and the overall temperature uniformity is increased by 1.45%. The authors investigate a semi‐flooded cooling technology for modular permanent magnet machines using flux gaps (FGs) in alternate stator teeth for extra cooling channels. The investigated machine is separated into stationary and rotational components by a polyether ether ketone sleeve. Liquid is directed into the stationary component to achieve a significant temperature reduction, at the same time, avoiding the liquid leakage into the rotating component that will cause an increase in friction losses. The FGs in the modular machine increase the contact area between coolant and machine components, resulting in better cooling efficiency. Furthermore, the FGs contribute to reduced pressure loss by minimising system flow resistance. The influence of the FG width on improving machine cooling efficiency, lowering machine temperature, and reducing pressure losses is delved. Additionally, the investigation considers the impact of inlet and outlet areas to reveal the influences stemming from fluid expansions and contractions in these regions. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling is employed to simulate the cooling performances of the investigated machines. A hybrid cooling tower, which is a promising type of coolers, can be used successfully to cool the circulating water of industrial enterprises taking into account the modern requirements for energy efficiency, resource saving, and environmental friendliness. A hybrid cooling tower design has been developed including a sprinkler made of inclined corrugated contact elements and an internal finned tubular radiator. The purpose of the work is to experimentally determine the volumetric coefficients of heat and mass emission in the developed hybrid cooling tower for cooling circulating water. A diagram of an experimental installation of a cooling tower with hybrid cooling system is presented and described. Graphic dependences were constructed for the volumetric coefficients of mass emission and heat emission on the average flow rate of cooling air at various wetting mass densities. A dimensionless equation has been obtained for determining the volumetric coefficients of mass emission in a hybrid cooling tower with transverse finning of radiator pipes. A comparison of volumetric coefficients of mass emission for the developed cooling tower with other water-cooling devices showed the potential of its usage for cooling circulating water, especially at high ratios of gas and liquid phase loads. This study focuses on improving human thermal comfort in a high-temperature outdoor environment using vests with a radiative cooling coating. The effects of coating thickness on the radiative cooling performance were first evaluated, and an optimal thickness of 160 μm was achieved. Then, six subjects were recruited to evaluate the thermal comfort in two scenarios: wearing the vest with radiative cooling coatings, and wearing the standard vest. Compared with the standard vest, the coated vest decreases the maximum temperature at the vest inner surface and the outer surface by 5.54 °C and 4.37 °C, respectively. The results show that thermal comfort is improved by wearing radiative cooling vests. With an increase of wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT), the improving effects tend to decline. A significant improvement in human thermal comfort is observed at a WBGT of 26 °C. Specifically, the percentage of thermal sensation vote (TSV) wearing the cooling vest in the range of 0 to 1 increases from 29.2% to 66.7% compared with that of the untreated vest. Objective: Focal cooling is emerging as a relevant therapy for drug‐resistant epilepsy (DRE). However, we lack data on its effectiveness in controlling seizures that originate in deep‐seated areas like the hippocampus. We present a thermoelectric solution for focal brain cooling that specifically targets these brain structures. Methods: A prototype implantable device was developed, including temperature sensors and a cannula for penicillin injection to create an epileptogenic zone (EZ) near the cooling tip in a non‐human primate model of epilepsy. The mesial temporal lobe was targeted with repeated penicillin injections into the hippocampus. Signals were recorded from an sEEG (Stereoelectroencephalography) lead placed 2 mm from the EZ. Once the number of seizures had stabilized, focal cooling was applied, and temperature and electroclinical events were monitored using a customized detection algorithm. Tests were performed on two Macaca fascicularis monkeys at three temperatures. Results: Hippocampal seizures were observed 40–120 min post‐injection, their duration and frequency stabilized at around 120 min. Compared to the control condition, a reduction in the number of hippocampal seizures was observed with cooling to 21°C (Control: 4.34 seizures, SD 1.704 per 20 min vs Cooling to 21°C: 1.38 seizures, SD 1.004 per 20 min). The effect was more pronounced with cooling to 17°C, resulting in an almost 80% reduction in seizure frequency. Seizure duration and number of interictal discharges were unchanged following focal cooling. After several months of repeated penicillin injections, hippocampal sclerosis was observed, similar to that recorded in humans. In addition, seizures were identified by detecting temperature variations of 0.3°C in the EZ correlated with the start of the seizures. Significance: In epilepsy therapy, the ultimate aim is total seizure control with minimal side effects. Challenges in drilling nickel-based superalloys, such as Inconel 718 (IN718), are multifaceted. High requirement of hole surface quality in drilling such alloy must deal with extreme material properties and complex process condition in drilling operation. This paper presents an experimental investigation on the effect of PVD coated solid carbide drills under different internal cooling schemes on hole quality in drilling IN 718 alloy. Three types of solid carbide drills were used in the series of drilling experiments, including PVD coated and uncoated drills, and different design in the number of internal cooling channels, two channels and four channels. The objective of the investigation is to assess the effect of coating and efficiency of internal cooling on surface quality in drilling IN718 alloy. Surface quality on drilled holes in terms of roughness, burr formation, subsurface deformation and strain hardening has also been measured and analyzed on the machined specimen. The roughness and burr size on drilled holes demonstrated little differences among the three types of testing drills. Surface roughness was severely deteriorated by the chip trapped in the hole leaving scratch and smears on the surface. Nevertheless, the scheme of internal cooling channels and PVD coating exhibited noticeable influence on quality of drilled hole surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The development of new and more effective cooling technologies is required for several high thermal power dissipation applications such as in electronics cooling or high concentrated photovoltaic panels. The present paper addresses an experimental study on the development of a microchannel based heat sink to cool photovoltaic panels. Experiments focus on the test of a microchannel, with geometry and dimensions optimized from previous work. The analysis performed here emphasizes the experimental characterization of flow boiling in the microchannel under different working conditions. The results include pressure drop and heat flux maps, obtained combining pressure sensors with high-speed imaging and time resolved thermography. The analysis performed was able to identify where nucleation sites were formed. Slug flow interfacial heat transfer could be observed and accurately described in the heat flux maps. Overall, results show the high potential of combining high-speed imaging with time resolved infrared thermography to characterize complex flows. These results also show that there is a good potential for this microchannel based flow cooling in removing the required heat fluxes for the application considered here, when compared to other liquid and air-cooling technologies. Heat treatment, particularly solution heat treatment, is a critical process in the preparation of powder metallurgy superalloys, where the cooling process significantly impacts the microstructure. This study, based on thermodynamic and kinetic databases as well as the precipitation mechanism of strengthening phases, delves into the influence of cooling process, especially the cooling path, on the material's microstructure. The results indicate that under slow cooling rates, the precipitated phases are more likely to exhibit a multimodal size distribution, while under rapid cooling rates, a unimodal distribution may form. The average cooling rate does not consistently accurately reflect the growth of the precipitated phases; even with the same average cooling rate, different cooling paths can lead to significant differences in the size of the precipitates. To accurately predict the size of the precipitates, it is necessary to consider the specific cooling process. Constant cooling rate experiments designed for the study and the dissection testing of full-size turbine discs produced in manufacturing validated the calculated results of the precipitates. Therefore, optimizing cooling through simulation calculations can effectively and accurately control the precipitates, thereby obtaining a microstructure that can meet performance requirements. Background The hybrid convergent procedure is approved to treat symptomatic patients with long-standing persistent atrial fibrillation (AF). Despite direct visualization during surgical ablation as well as the use of luminal oesophageal temperature (LET) monitoring, oesophageal injury is still possible. A dedicated device for proactive oesophageal cooling has recently been cleared by the Food and Drug Administration to reduce the likelihood of ablation-related oesophageal injury resulting from radiofrequency cardiac ablation procedures. This report describes the first uses of proactive oesophageal cooling for oesophageal protection during the epicardial ablation portion of hybrid convergent procedures. Case summary Five patients with long-standing persistent AF underwent hybrid convergent ablations with the use of proactive oesophageal cooling as means of oesophageal protection. All cases were completed successfully with no adverse effects. Most notably, cases were shorter when compared to cases using LET monitoring, likely due to lack of pauses for overheating of the oesophagus that would otherwise be required to prevent damage to the oesophagus. Discussion This report describes the first uses of proactive oesophageal cooling for oesophageal protection during the epicardial ablation portion of five hybrid convergent procedures. Use of cooling enabled uninhibited deployment of lesions without the need to pause energy delivery due to elevated temperatures in the oesophagus, providing a feasible alternative to LET monitoring. Background: Storing spermatozoa in a cold environment decreases spermatozoa metabolism while maintaining sperm fertility. Because of their unique physiological characteristics, sperm cells' reproductive ability in small ruminants is reduced by cooling. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the impact of supplementing chilling medium with coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) on the quality parameters of buck's semen after chilling at 4°C. Methods: Semen was collected, diluted, and divided into five groups with different CoQ10 supplementation concentrations (0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 μM CoQ10). Collected semen were stored at 4°C for 50 h. The motility, mitochondrial activity, membrane integrity, viability, and lipid peroxidation were measured after 0, 25, and 50 h of chilling. Results: According to the findings, different concentrations of CoQ10 had no impact (P>0.05) on semen at time 0 of storage. After 25 and 50 h of storage, supplementing the chilling medium with 5 μM CoQ10 increased (P≤0.05) progressive motility (PM), total motility (TM), viability, mitochondrial activity, and membrane integrity compared to other groups. Furthermore, 5 μM CoQ10 produced less lipid peroxidation (P≤0.05) after 25 and 50 h than the other groups. Conclusion: Adding 5 μM CoQ10 to the buck's semen cooling medium is an effective procedure for protecting the quality of buck spermatozoa during cooling storage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Post‐exercise hot (HWI) and cold (CWI) water immersion are popular strategies used by athletes in a range of sporting contexts, such as enhancing recovery or adaptation. However, prolonged heating bouts increase neuroendocrine responses that are associated with perceptions of fatigue. Fourteen endurance‐trained runners performed three trials consisting of two 45‐min runs at 95% lactate threshold on a treadmill separated by 6 h of recovery. Following the first run, participants completed one of HWI (30 min, 40°C), CWI (15 min, 14°C) or control (CON, 30 min rest in ambient conditions) in a randomised order. Perceived effort and recovery were measured using ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and the Acute Recovery and Stress Scale (ARSS), whilst physiological responses including venous concentrations of a range of neuroendocrine markers, superficial femoral blood flow, heart rate and rectal temperature were measured. Abstract Objective To determine the effectiveness of phase-change-material mattress (PCM) during transportation of newborns with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Study design Randomized controlled trial of newborns with HIE from June 2016 to December 2019. Patients were randomized to transport with PCM or without PCM (control) when transferred to a cooling center in northern Vietnam. Primary outcome measure was mortality rate, secondary outcomes including temperature control and adverse effects. Result Fifty-Two patients in PCM-group and 61 in control group. Median rectal temperature upon arrival was 34.5 °C (IQR 33.5–34.8) in PCM-group and 35.1 °C (IQR 34.5–35.9) in control group (p = 0.023). Median time from birth to reach target temperature was 5.0 ± 1.4 h and 5.5 ± 1.2 h in the respective groups (p = 0.065). 81% of those transported with PCM versus 62% of infants transported without (p = 0.049) had reached target temperature within the 6-h timeframe. There was no record of overcooling ( 0.05)). Conclusion Phase-change-material can be used as a safe and effective cooling method during transportation of newborns with HIE in low-resource settings. Elevated air movement produced by fans can offset air-conditioning energy requirements by allowing temperature setpoints to be raised without compromising thermal comfort. These advantages are even greater in hot and humid climates that inherently have large and sustained indoor cooling requirements. Few studies have assessed the in-situ benefits of fans in actual buildings. We installed ceiling and desk fans into a Zero Energy office building (675 m2) in Singapore. Across an 11-week period, 35 occupants alternated between two conditions (no fan vs. fan): 24 °C setpoint with fans off, and 26.5 °C setpoint with fans on. When the temperature setpoint was raised and elevated air movement was provided, a 32% energy reduction was obtained. The energy savings accrued without any negative impacts occurring on thermal satisfaction. Overcooling caused by thermal preference to slightly warmer and warmer conditions was substantially reduced from 33 to 9%. No changes in perceived air-staleness or self-reported alertness and ability to concentrate occurred either, indicating parity across the no fan and fan conditions. Although occupants primarily relied on ceiling fans at the 26.5 °C setpoint, they were by default on at the beginning of each day, giving less incentive to use the desk fans. Our study took place in a high-performance Zero Energy building, whereby thermal dissatisfaction was already low (7%). Therefore, notable changes did not occur, but significant improvements to thermal comfort could still occur in buildings that are unable to maintain high levels of thermal satisfaction.

[Display omitted] Energy consumption from air cooling systems in summer, water scarcity in hot regions, and the functional reusability of waste paper are emerging environmental problems. Finding solutions to these problems simultaneously remains a significant challenge. Herein, a superhydrophobic passive cooling Cellulose-CaCO 3 film with hierarchical nano-sheets was fabricated to realize daytime radiative cooling with a temperature drop of 15–20 °C in summer and water harvesting with harvesting efficiency of 387 mg cm−2h−1 bd utilization of recycled waste paper. The superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film demonstrates its self-cleaning properties against inorganic and organic pollutants. Furthermore, the superhydrophobicity of the film was maintained after base/acid corrosions, dynamic water flushing, and thermal treatment at 100 °C for 7 h, exhibiting good durability of the superhydrophobicity. Moreover, the superhydrophobic Cellulose-CaCO 3 film is nonflammable after exposure to fire combustion for 1 min. In addition to waste paper, waste maize straws, and pasteboards were also collected to produce superhydrophobic passive cooling films. Results indicate that the above three cellulose-based raw materials can be well used to prepare durable superhydrophobic passive cooling materials. Environmental toxicology assessments confirm the safety of the material. This study not only provides a protocol for preparing superhydrophobic materials; but also demonstrates their potential for passive cooling and water harvesting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Both composition and temperature play a crucial role in determining the NO radiative cooling in lower thermosphere as observed by TIMED/SABER. In this work, we present a detailed investigation of seasonal variation in thermospheric NO radiative cooling. We have carried forward the investigation of Li et al. (2018) regarding the variations in local nighttime peak NO radiative cooling and its altitude during solar maximum and solar minimum conditions. By analyzing latitudinal changes over quiet times for each month in year 2018, it is evident that both the investigated parameters exhibit summer-winter variability. The qualitative contribution of different species (i.e., NO, and O), and temperatures in determining the vertical profile of NO radiative cooling for different latitudes is investigated by utilizing the NRLMSISE-00 estimated parameters, and SNOE observed NO density. The temperature, NO density, and compositional variations due to asymmetrical solar heating and associated summer-to-winter circulation in both the hemispheres during solar minimum conditions seem to be the dominating factor in controlling the NO radiative cooling during different seasons. The altitudes at which maximum cooling by NO occurs exhibits an inverse correlation with the amount of radiative cooling. The region of enhanced NO densities (polar and summer hemispheric low-mid latitude regions) have larger NO radiative cooling with lower peak altitudes in comparison to other regions (equatorial to winter hemispheric low-mid latitude regions), where NO radiative cooling is low with higher peak altitude values. The high temperature of gas drainage liquid ring vacuum pump is an important reason for its low operating efficiency and short service life. Based on the wasted power dissipation theory of liquid ring pumps, the heat generation-heat dissipation mechanism of the pump was quantitatively analyzed, and an intelligent cooling and waste heat utilization technology for gas extraction pumps based on low-temperature heat pumps was proposed. An engineering test system was developed to investigate the effects of inlet fluid temperature, operating fluid flow rate, ambient temperature and other parameters on the cooling performance of the system. Taking the 2BEC87 gas extraction pump of Licun Coal Mine as the test object, when the suction negative pressure is -53 kPa and the inlet liquid flow rate is 10 m3/h, the inlet liquid temperature can be reduced from 35 °C to 16 °C, and the operating temperature can be reduced from 54 °C to 45 ℃. The cooling effect is significant, and this technology can improve the operating efficiency of the drainage pump by more than 7%.

Pin fins have the potential to improve the thermal performance of various engineering devices. Modified pin fins could further increase their thermal performance in a passive way at lower cost. This study is aimed to numerically investigate the thermal performance of trenched hemispherical pin fins heat sink (THPFHS) and the influence of parameters including the trench number (N=1, 3 and 5) and thickness (e =1 to 5 mm). The simulations are performed using a CFD software considering turbulent air flow conditions. Results show that the use of aluminum fins fitted with one trench in the middle of the hemispherical pin fin considerably increases the local heat transfer. Furthermore, all studied configurations show high thermal performance factor (HTPF) compared with the conventional CPFHS (cylindrical pin fins heat sink). For this new configuration (THPFHS), Nu increases by 45% while the thermal resistance reduces by 42%, compared to the baseline case. On the other hand, this improved performance results in 50% pressure drop penalty. Moreover, the obtained results show a significant improvement in the performance mainly at high Re.

One efficient way to convert small thermally energized into effective cooling is through adsorption cooling technology, which increases energy efficiency and reduces environmental pollution. This study's primary goal is to hypothetically examine the thermal coefficient of performing the solar adsorptive refrigerator machine operated with an activating carbon/Ethanol operating dual. The impact of different operating situations and design factors on the machine's performance is inspected and evaluated. The present double-bed solar energy adsorptive-cooler unit is modeled by thermodynamic methodology. Then, it was analyzed to evaluate its effectiveness work under Baghdad climate conditions. For the current study, the two-bed solar adsorption cooling unit with 0.5 kW capacity input heat 11893 that operates at 5 °C for the evaporator and 45 °C for the condenser is presented. The Engineering-Equation-Solver (EES) simulation program was created and used to solve the modeling equations that predict the optimal cycle performance and evaluate the optimum reasonable values of the operation parameters of the proposed system. The pressure range for the refrigeration cycle is 2.408 kPa for the evaporation state and 23.14 kPa for the condensation state. The findings demonstrate that an optimum coefficient of performance (COP) is 0.702 at 95 °C, a 20% performance increase, which generates 39.4 of cooling water. It produced 1 kg of chilled water for 2.463 kg of activated carbon at a temperature of 5°C. The improved solar-powered adsorption systems and refrigeration technologies are appealing substitutes that can satisfy energy demands in addition to meeting needs for cooling, ice production, air conditioning, and refrigeration preservation and safeguarding of the environment with Iraq's climate conditions.

The phase transformation mechanism of oxide scale on the surfaces of chromium (Cr)-free carbon steel and 0.9 wt% Cr-containing steel at different coiling temperatures and cooling rates was studied using thermal simulation and electron backscattering diffraction experiments. The results showed that the eutectoid transformation of both the steel followed the “C” curve relationship. The Cr-containing steel had a larger eutectoid transformation area fraction than the Cr-free carbon steel. The nose tip temperature of the eutectoid transformation of the oxide scale on the surfaces of Cr-free carbon steel and 0.9 wt% Cr-containing steel were 420∼510 °C and 420–480 °C, respectively. For the 0.9 wt% Cr-containing steel, the proportion of Σ3 and Σ13b grain boundaries in cubic Fe3O4 increased, followed by a decrease, when the coiling temperature decreased from 610 to 410 °C. The Σ3 and Σ13b grain boundaries of the Fe3O4 low-dimensional coincident site lattice had the highest proportion for 510 °C coiling temperature. The low-dimensional coincident site lattice grain boundaries could be used to enhance crack resistance and improve the oxide scale on the steel plate surface.

Several crystallization strategies are being implemented to enhance the solubility of acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effectiveness of the cooling and anti-solvent crystallization on the properties of acetaminophen. The results showed that the anti-solvent recrystallization produced achieved an impressive yield of up to 41.40%, while the cooling method yielded approximately 2–9%. Through FTIR, XRD, and DSC analysis on the samples, it was discovered that these methods had minimum effects on the molecular and thermal properties of the compound. Furthermore, the methods did not alter the crystallinity of acetaminophen, with crystal form I dominating the products. In addition, processing using the cooling and anti-solvent effectively reduced particle size of acetaminophen from 68.60 μm to 26.92 μm and 28.25 µm, respectively. In conclusion, the solubility of paracetamol in aqueous solutions experienced a significant enhancement. In the unprocessed samples, it measured 0.0107 gram/ml, while the recrystallized samples had an improved range of 0.0123 to 0.0167 g/ml.

The nonlinear effects of thermal radiation on the free convection flow of certain nanofluids along a heated wall are studied numerically using an original finite-difference method. Nanofluids are used to improve the performance of flat and curved integrated photovoltaic modules. The partial differential equations governing the flow are difficult to solve due to the strong non-linearity of the radiative term. In contrast to previous studies, the problem is solved directly without linearization by Rosseland's nonlinear approximation. The proposed numerical method is validated with results from the literature. The effects of nonlinearity and various physical parameters such as time, volume fraction and radiation parameter on the velocity, temperature, Nusselt number and skin friction coefficient of the CuO-water nanofluid are analyzed and presented graphically. A comparative study between the solutions given by the linear and non-linear problems reveals that Rosseland's linear approximation is no longer valid when the effect of thermal radiation is significant. On the other hand, the non-linear model better reflects the physical phenomena involved in the cooling process. Finally, a comparison of the performance of five nanofluids (CuO, Ag, Al2O3, Cu and TiO2 in water) shows that the Cu-water nanofluid performs best, with a high heat transfer rate and low shear stresses. Adiabatic decompression of paraquadrupolar materials has significant potential as a cryogenic cooling technology. We focus on TmVO4, an archetypal material that undergoes a continuous phase transition to a ferroquadrupole-ordered state at 2.15 K. Above the phase transition, each Tm ion contributes an entropy of kB ln 2 due to the degeneracy of the crystal electric field groundstate. Owing to the large magnetoelastic coupling, which is a prerequisite for a material to undergo a phase transition via the cooperative Jahn--Teller effect, this level splitting, and hence the entropy, can be readily tuned by externally induced strain. Using a dynamic technique in which the strain is rapidly oscillated, we measure the adiabatic elastocaloric response of single-crystal TmVO4, and thus experimentally obtain the entropy landscape as a function of strain and temperature. The measurement confirms the suitability of this class of materials for cryogenic cooling applications and provides insight into the dynamic quadrupole strain susceptibility. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolution of many astrophysical systems depends strongly on the balance between heating and cooling, in particular star formation in giant molecular clouds and the evolution of young protostellar systems. Protostellar discs are susceptible to the gravitational instability, which can play a key role in their evolution and in planet formation. The strength of the instability depends on the rate at which the system loses thermal energy. To study the evolution of these systems, we require radiative cooling approximations because full radiative transfer is generally too expensive to be coupled to hydrodynamical models. Here, we present two new approximate methods for computing radiative cooling that make use of the polytropic cooling approximation. This approach invokes the assumption that each parcel of gas is located within a spherical pseudo-cloud, which can then be used to approximate the optical depth. The first method combines the methods introduced by Stamatellos et al. and Lombardi et al. to overcome the limitations of each method at low and high optical depths, respectively. The second method, the 'modified Lombardi' method, is specifically tailored for self-gravitating discs. This modifies the scale height estimate from the method of Lombardi et al. using the analytical scale height for a self-gravitating disc. We show that the modified Lombardi method provides an excellent approximation for the column density in a fragmenting disc, a regime in which the existing methods fail to recover the clumps and spiral structures. We therefore recommend this improved radiative cooling method for more realistic simulations of self-gravitating discs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents significant advancements in passive radiative cooling (PRC), achieved using assembled hollow yttrium oxide spherical particles (AHYOSPs). We developed PRC films with enhanced optical properties by synthesizing micro-sized hollow Y2O3 particles and integrating them into a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) matrix. The findings revealed that AHYOSPs achieved a remarkable solar reflectance of 73.72% and an emissivity of 91.75%, significantly outperforming nano-sized yttrium oxide (NYO) and baseline PDMS. Field tests demonstrated that the AHYOSPs maintained their lowest temperature during daylight, confirming their superior cooling efficiency. Additionally, theoretical calculations using MATLAB indicated that the cooling capacity of AHYOSPs reached 103.77 W/m2, representing a substantial improvement over NYO and robustly validating the proposed nanoparticle assembly strategy. These results highlight the potential of structurally controlled particles to revolutionize PRC technologies, thereby offering a path toward more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly cooling solutions.
