Abstract

Global change is striking harder and faster in the Mediterranean Sea than elsewhere, where high levels of human pressure and proneness to climate change interact in modifying the structure and disrupting regulative mechanisms of marine ecosystems. Rocky reefs are particularly exposed to such environmental changes with ongoing trends of degradation being impressive. Due to the variety of habitat types and associated marine biodiversity, rocky reefs are critical for the functioning of marine ecosystems, and their decline could profoundly affect the provision of essential goods and services which human populations in coastal areas rely upon. Here, we provide an up-to-date overview of the status of rocky reefs, trends in human-driven changes undermining their integrity, and current and upcoming management and conservation strategies, attempting a projection on what could be the future of this essential component of Mediterranean marine ecosystems.

Abstract

Marine sponges host a wide diversity of microorganisms, which have versatile modes of carbon and energy metabolism. In this study we describe the major lithoheterotrophic and autotrophic processes in 21 microbial sponge-associated phyla using novel and existing genomic and transcriptomic datasets. We show that the main microbial carbon fixation pathways in sponges are the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle (energized by light in Cyanobacteria, by sulfur compounds in two orders of Gammaproteobacteria, and by a wide range of compounds in filamentous Tectomicrobia), the reductive tricarboxylic acid cycle (used by Nitrospirota), and the 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate cycle (active in Thaumarchaeota). Further, we observed that some sponge symbionts, in particular Acidobacteria, are capable of assimilating carbon through anaplerotic processes. The lithoheterotrophic lifestyle was widespread and CO oxidation is the main energy source for sponge lithoheterotrophs. We also suggest that the molybdenum-binding subunit of dehydrogenase (encoded by coxL) likely evolved to benefit also organoheterotrophs that utilize various organic substrates. Genomic potential does not necessarily inform on actual contribution of autotrophs to light and dark carbon budgets. Radioisotope assays highlight variability in the relative contributions of photo- and chemoautotrophs to the total carbon pool across different sponge species, emphasizing the importance of validating genomic potential with physiology experimentation.

Resumen: Este artículo estudia la repercusión de la doctrina de Eduardo Rodríguez Larreta en la política interna uruguaya. A fines de noviembre de 1945, el canciller oriental envió a las cancillerías americanas un documento que proponía considerar y discutir la posibilidad de una “acción colectiva multilateral” ante regímenes de fuerza que violaran los derechos del hombre y del ciudadano, por más que no fueran todavía una amenaza para la paz. La tesis ponía en discusión el consagrado principio de la no intervención. La nota uruguaya fue rechazada por la mayoría de los países del continente y combatida por varios medios políticos locales.A principios de 1946, la administración de Juan José de Amézaga modificó elpunto central de la discordia: la “intervención multilateral”. No obstante, los contemporáneos opositores a la propuesta la leyeron pensada en clave argentina, o sea contra la dictadura de EdelmiroFarrell-Juan Domingo Perón. Al final, rompiendo los pronósticos Perón, continuador de aquella dictadura, resultó electo presidente en febrero de 1946 y las consecuencias de la victoria se sintieron en Uruguay. Abstract: This article studies the repercussion of the doctrine of Eduardo Rodriguez Larreta in Uruguayan internal politics. At the end of November 1945, the Uruguayan chancellor sent a document to the Americas’ Foreign Ministries proposing to consider and discuss the possibility of a “multilateral collective action” before regimes of force that violated the rights of man and of the citizen, even though they were not necessarily still a threat to peace. The thesis put into discussion the consecrated principle of non-intervention. The Uruguayan note was rejected by most of the countries of the continent and fought by several local political media. At the beginning of 1946, the administration of Juan José de Amézaga modified the central point of the discord: the “multilateral intervention”. However, contemporaries opposed to the proposal read it thought in Argentine key, that is to say against the dictatorship of Edelmiro Farrell-Juan Domingo Perón. Finally, breaking the forecasts Peron, continuator of that dictatorship, was elected president in February 1946 and the consequences of the victory were felt in Uruguay. 19. Mediterranean Lithophyllum stictiforme (Corallinales, Rhodophyta) is a genetically diverse species complex: implications for species circumscription, biogeography and conservation of coralligenous habitats

Abstract

Lithophyllum species in the Mediterranean Sea function as algal bioconstructors, contributing to the formation of biogenic habitats such as coralligenous concretions. In such habitats, thalli of Lithophyllum, consisting of crusts or lamellae with entire or lobed margins, have been variously referred to as either one species, L. stictiforme, or two species, L. stictiforme and L. cabiochiae, in the recent literature. We investigated species diversity and phylogenetic relationships in these algae by sequencing three markers (psbA and rbcL genes, cox2,3 spacer), in conjunction with methods for algorithmic delimitation of species (ABGD and GMYC). Mediterranean subtidal Lithophyllum 68 belong to a well-supported lineage, hereby called the Lithophyllum stictiforme complex, which also includes two species described from the Atlantic, L. lobatum and L. searlesii. Our results indicate that the L. stictiforme complex consists of at least 13 species. Among the Mediterranean species, some are widely distributed and span most of the western and central Mediterranean, whereas others appear to be restricted to specific localities. These patterns are interpreted as possibly resulting from allopatric speciation events that took place during the Messinian Salinity Crisis and subsequent glacial periods. A partial rbcL sequence from the lectotype of L. stictiforme unambiguously indicates that this name applies to the most common subtidal Lithophyllum in the central Mediterranean. We agree with recent treatments that considered L. cabiochiae and L. stictiforme conspecific. The diversity of Lithophyllum in Mediterranean coralligenous habitats has been substantially underestimated, and future work on these and other Mediterranean corallines should use identifications based on DNA sequences

Abstract

The European Red List of Habitats provides an overview of the risk of collapse (degree of endangerment) of marine, terrestrial and freshwater habitats in the European Union (EU28) and adjacent regions (EU28+), based on a consistent set of categories and criteria, and detailed data and expert knowledge from involved countries. A total of 257 benthic marine habitat types were assessed. In total, 19% (EU28) and 18% (EU28+) of the evaluated habitats were assessed as threatened in categories Critically Endangered, Endangered and Vulnerable. An additional 12% were Near Threatened in the EU28 and 11% in the EU28+. These figures are approximately doubled if Data Deficient habitats are excluded. The percentage of threatened habitat types differs across the regional seas. The highest proportion of threatened habitats in the EU28 was found in the Mediterranean Sea (32%), followed by the North-East Atlantic (23%), the Black Sea (13%) and then the Baltic Sea (8%). There was a similar pattern in the EU28+. The most frequently cited pressures and threats were similar across the four regional seas: pollution (eutrophication), biological resource use other than agriculture or forestry (mainly fishing but also aquaculture), natural system modifications (e.g. dredging and sea defence works), urbanisation and climate change. Even for habitats where the assessment outcome was Data Deficient, the Red List assessment process has resulted in the compilation of a substantial body of useful information to support the conservation of marine habitats.

35. Distribution and phenotypic variability of the Mediterranean gorgonian Paramuricea macrospina(Cnidaria: Octocorallia)

Abstract

AbstractThe genus Paramuriceais present in the Mediterranean Sea with two species, P. clavataand P. macrospina. These species have similar bathymetric distributions and can live in sympatry. P. macrospinashows morphological plasticity leading sometimes to an erroneous classification as P. clavata. Studying four ambiguous morphotypes of P. macrospinacollected in different localities of the Mediterranean Sea, we provide new insights on both the taxonomy and the distribution of this species. Our analyses reveal high morphological plasticity within the sampled colonies, which in two cases were characterised by a peculiar pigmentation and a morphological pattern resembling that of P. clavata. After having confirmed the genetic identity of the samples, we tested the validity of traditional taxonomic characters, and found that the most reliable character to discriminate between P. macrospinaand P. clavatais the number of rows of spindles in the collaret of the polyps. All other features are highly variable and therefore do not allow a correct identification. The bathymetric and geographic distribution of P. macrospinais here updated, showing, with the exception of the south-eastern side, broad preference in the whole basin. Moreover, further studies are needed to investigate the gene flow among and within the Mediterranean populations of P. macrospinaand to assess whether the morphological plasticity is driven by adaptive genetic processes of populations exposed to different environmental, climatic and bathymetric conditions.

Abstract

Chalinula nematifera(Porifera: Haplosclerida) is an encrusting sponge able to overgrow live corals. It was described from the Western-Central Pacific Ocean and recently has been reported along the Mexican Pacific coast, where it is considered introduced and a potential threat for corals. However, there is a lack of accurate data about the distribution and abundance ofChalinula nematifera. Here we report a first wide assessment of its effect on different coral species and its growth rate.
