Abstract: The EPR-type strangeness correlation in the K0 system produced in the reaction at rest has been tested using the CPLEAR detector. The strangeness was tagged via strong interaction with absorbers away from the creation point. Abstract: The ratio R between the branching fractions of p p → K S K S and p p → K S K L for antiprotons annihilating at rest in gaseous hydrogen at 27 bar pressure was measured with the CPLEAR detector to be R(27 bar) = 0.037 ± 0.002. The fraction of P-wave annihilation at rest at this target density was deduced to be 0.45 ± 0.06. A value of R was also measured at 15 bar, with less statistics, yielding R(15 bar) = 0.041 ± 0.009.

Abstract: The CPLEAR collaboration has constructed a detector at CERN for an extensive programme of CP-, T- and CPT-symmetry studies using ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ produced by the annihilation of $\bar{\rm p}$'s in a hydrogen gas target. The ${\rm K}^0$ and $\bar{\rm K}^0$ are identified by their companion products of the annihilation ${\rm K}^{\pm} \pi^{\mp}$ which are tracked with multiwire proportional chambers, drift chambers and streamer tubes. Particle identification is carried out with a liquid Cherenkov detector for fast separation of pions and kaons and with scintillators which allow the measurement of time of flight and energy loss. Photons are measured with a lead/gas sampling electromagnetic calorimeter. The required antiproton annihilation modes are selected by fast online processors using the tracking chamber and particle identification information. All the detectors are mounted in a 0.44 T uniform field of an axial solenoid of diameter 2 m and length 3.6 m to form a magnetic spectrometer capable of full on-line reconstruction and selection of events. The design, operating parameters and performance of the sub-detectors are described.}

Abstract: The interference between CP-conserving Ks and K L → π + π − π 0 decay amplitudes was observed by studying the decay rate asymmetries between initial K 0 and K 0 separately for the phase space regions E CM ( π + ) > E CM ( π − ) and E CM ( π + ) E CM ( π − ). For the parameter λ we found Re(λ) = 0.036 ± 0.010(stat.) −0.003 +0.002 (syst.) and Im(λ) consistent with zero, leading to a branching ratio B = [4.1 −1.9 +2.5 (stat.) −0.6 +0.5 (syst.)] × 10 −7 for the CP-conserving K S → π + π − π 0 decay.

Abstract: The best estimation of ϕ +− (the phase of the CP violation parameter η +− ) and of Δm (the K L - K S mass difference) is obtained by averaging the results of different experiments, taking into account the different correlation, existing for most of the experiments, between the measurement of ϕ +− and Δm . Including the recent measurements, we obtain the average values 〈Δm〉 = (530.7 ± 1.3) × 10 7 ħ/s and 〈 ϕ +− 〉 = 43.82° ± 0.63°. This value of ϕ +− is in good agreement with the superweak phase ϕ SW = 43.49° ± 0.08°.

Abstract: The CP violation parameter η+− is determined through the eigentime-dependent asymmetry in the rates of initially tagged K0 and K 0 decaying to π+π−. The obtained values are |η+−| = (2.312 ± 0.043stat. ± 0.030syst. ± 0.011τs) × 10−3 and Φ+− = 42.7° ± 0.9stat.° ± 0.6syst.° ± 0.9Δm° with Δ = (527.4 ± 2.9) × 10 7 h gs −1 measured in the same experiment using the semileptonic decay channel.

Abstract: Antiproton annihilation at rest in gaseous hydrogen (16 bar pressure) to the final states ρ(770)X andf2(1270)X, whereX stands for one or more neutral mesons, has been studied at LEAR using the CPLEAR detector. Relative branching ratios are given forX =π0,2π0, 3π0 ω in the ρ case, and forX =π0, η in thef2 case. The annihilation channel$\bar pp \to \rho 3\pi ^0 $ has not been measured before. The fraction of P-wave annihilation is deduced from the ratiof2π0/ρπ0 to be 0.38±0.07, in good agreement with the result previously obtained by CPLEAR from the ratioK+K-/π+π-.

Abstract: Two-charged-pion correlations were studied in$\bar p$p(→2π*2π−nπ0,n≥0) annihilations at rest with the CPLEAR detector at the Low-Energy Antiproton Ring (LEAR). A strong enhancement was found in the production of pairs of like-sign pions with a small value of the relative fourmomentumQ, with respect to pairs of unlike-sign pions. The observed enhancement was interpreted as a consequence of the Bose-Einstein symmetrization of the two-pion wave function. The data are well represented by a correlation function parametrized as a double-Gaussian; an exponential parametrization is also statistically acceptable. The value of the correlation strength is found to be >1. The high-quality large data samples together with the ability for K± identification and final-state separation allowed the study of systematic effects impacting on theQ dependence of the correlation function and on the extracted space parameters of the pion sources.

Abstract: The s dependence of the electromagnetic proton form factors in the time-like region has been determined from the threshold (s = 4Mp2) up to s = 4.2 GeV2. Data were collected in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics. Total and differential cross section of the p p → e − e + reaction have been measured. The electric and magnetic form factors are found to have comparable value. The observed form factor shows a clear steep s dependence close to the threshold.

Abstract: An optical discriminator, sensitive to the impact parameter has been tested in a particle beam. The device is based on the detection of Cherenkov light produced and trapped in a thin spherical crystal shell viewed by a fast photodetector. The detector is only sensitive to charged particles with a nonzero impact parameter relative to the centre of the crystal sphere. A prototype using a LiF crystal has been tested and the experimental results are in agreement with expectations. We outline the foreseen developments in order to use such a detector for a fast selection of B events in fixed-target experiments at proton accelerators. We also discuss the use of the detector as presently conceived for the fast selection of strange particles.

Abstract: We report the first determination of CP violation parameters from parameter from particle—antiparticle asymmetry in the decay of neutral kaons into two charged pions. Observation of such an asymmetry is direct proof of CP violation. A fit to the asymmetry enabled a determination of the parameter η+− to be made, yielding the result |η+−|=[2.32±0.14 (stat.)±0.03 (syst.)]×10−3 and σ+−=42.3°±4.4° (stat.)±0.4° (syst.), with an additional uncertainty of ±1.0° due to the error on the present published value of Δm, the KL0-KS0 mass difference. The magnitudes of both statistical and systematic errors will be significantly reduced in the future.

Abstract: The ratio of the branching fractions for p p →K+K− and p p →π+π− was determined with the CPLEAR detector, by stopping antiprotons in a gaseous hydrogen target at 15 bar pressure. It was found to be BR(K+K−)/BR(π+π−)=0.205± 0.016. The fraction of P-wave annihilation at rest at this target density was deduced to be (38±9)%.

Abstract: We report on a new measurement of the K L –K S mass difference Δm using the CPLEAR full data sample of neutral-kaon decays to e πν . The result is Δm =(0.5295±0.0020 stat ±0.0003 syst )×10 10 ℏ/s. It includes earlier data reported in R. Adler et al., CPLEAR Collaboration, Phys. Lett. B 363 (1995) 237. A measurement of the ΔS = ΔQ violating parameter Re( x ) is also obtained.

Abstract: Several 15×15 cm 2 gaseous Micromegas chambers (MICROMEsh GAseous Structure) which consist of a conversion gap and an amplification gap separated by a thin grid have been extensively tested in low-intensity 10 GeV /c pion beam and high-intensity (up to 5×10 5 Hz / mm 2 ) 100 GeV /c muon beam. The detector behaviour has been studied with respect to many parameters: conversion gaps of 1 and 3 mm, amplification gaps of 50 and 10 μm, an external magnetic field and many different filling gases. So far no effect of the magnetic field up to 1.3 T has been observed. The gas mixture argon + cyclohexane appears to be very suitable with gains above 105 and a full-efficiency plateau of 50 V at 340 V. With a conversion gap as small as 1 mm and an electronics with a threshold at 5000 electrons the efficiency reaches 96%. With the addition of CF4 a time resolution of 5 ns (RMS) has been obtained. A spatial resolution better than 60 μ m has been observed with anode strips of 317 μ m pitch and was explained by transverse diffusion in the gas. Simulations show that with a pitch of 100 μ m and the appropriate gas a resolution of 10 μ m is within reach. This development leads to a new generation of cheap position-sensitive detectors which would permit high-precision tracking or vertexing close to the interaction region, in very high-rate environments.

Abstract: We present particle beam test results using a high-rate, high-position and high-time-resolution gaseous detector, ‘Micromegas’, of 15×15 cm 2 . The rate capability was measured with 10 MeV protons from a TANDEM accelerator. No effect on gain was observed at particle rates up to 10 9 mm −2 s −1 . With an argon and DME filling the gain was stable up to 50 mC total charge on a 3 mm 2 area. With minimum-ionizing particles in a CERN beam a high efficiency, close to 100%, was measured, under stable conditions. A first space-resolution measurement of 50 μ m ±20 μ m was obtained. The operation of the chamber shows that it is possible to optimize the geometrical parameters in order to improve the space resolution and bring the time resolution low enough to contain the events of each beam crossing (every 25 ns) in the European Large Hadron Collider. Further work in this direction is being actively pursued.

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment measured time-dependent decay-rate asymmetries of \PKz\ and \PaKz\ decaying to \pipmz\ in order to study the interference between the decay amplitudes of \PKzS\ --- either CP-violating or CP-conserving --- and the CP-conserving \PKzL\ decay amplitude. Abstract: CP violation has been observed as a time-dependent rate asymmetry between the decays ${⩈erline K}^0 ⌝ghtarrow ≪^{0} ≪^{0}$ and K0 → π0π{0}, where the neutral kaons are produced with definite and individually known strangeness in ${⋏r p}p ⌝ghtarrow{⩈erline K}^0 K^+≪^- $ or pp → K0 K− π+. A special technique for the data analysis has been developed. The values obtained for ϕ00 and ¦ η00¦ are in agreement with those of previous measurements of CP violation.

Abstract: The method for studying semileptonic neutral kaon decays at CPLEAR is presented together with a preliminary data analysis. For the first time a direct determination of T violation is shown to be possible and low statistics results are given. From the same data the K(L)-K(S) mass difference, DELTAm, the CP violation parameter of K(S), epsilon(S), and the parameter x testing the DELTAS = DELTAQ rule are also obtained. Nuclear Physics A

Abstract: The CPLEAR experiment is aiming at precise CP violation tests using initially pure K0- and K0BAR beams from the intense source provided by the annihilation of the LEAR pBAR-beam in hydrogen. The strangeness tagging efficiency and the systematic errors have been studied and found to be in agreement with the design specifications. The measurement of the differential time asymmetry of the pi+pi- decays allowed the direct observation of differences in the decay rates of particles and antiparticles.The CP violating parameters were determined as \eta+/-\ = (2.32 +/- 0.14) . 10(-3) and phi+/- = 42.3-degrees +/- 4.4-degrees. First results in the reconstruction and analysis of the neutral kaon decays into two neutral pions and the K(e)3 decay are presented. Nuclear Physics B

Abstract: We describe the status of experiment PS195, which is under way on LEAR at CERN to study CP violation starting with pure K0 or K0 states. Early results on backgrounds and systematic effects agree with expectations from the original proposal. An asymmetry in particle‐anti‐particle partial decay rates has been seen for the first time.

Abstract: The s dependence of the proton form factor in the time-like region has been determined up to s=4.2 GeV2, assuming the validity of the |Ge| = |Gm| = |G| hypothesis. Data were taken in a dedicated experiment performed at the LEAR antiproton ring at CERN, increasing by one order of magnitude the available statistics on the proton form factor near threshold in the time-like region. Our result consist of cross section measurements of the p p → e + e − reaction for different beam momenta in the kinematical r 3.6⩽s⩽4.2 GeV2. The observed s dependence of the form factor close to threshold differs appreciably from the one suggested by previous experiments.

Abstract: The rate of the reaction pp→e+e− has been measured in liquid hydrogen for antiprotons at momentum values between 150 and 300 MeV/c. New precise values of the proton electromagnetic form factor in the time-like region have been obtained assuming |Ge|=|Gm| in the investigated region. The q2 dependence of the form factor close to threshold is found to have a steeper slope than indicated by existing calculations based on vector dominance models.

Abstract: Charged-current neutrino interactions have been analysed in a sample of pictures from BEBC equipped with a TST. Using a method independent of both the neutrino flux and nuclear interaction corrections, the ratio R= σn/σp has been measured. The result is R=1.98±0.19 for the ratio of total cross sections. Abstract: Charged-current neutrino and antineutrino interaction cross sections have been measured in the energy range 10 to 50 GeV using BEBC filled with a neon-hydrogen mixture. At these energies, σ/E was measured to be (0.73±0.08) 10−38 cm2/GeV per nucleon for neutrinos and (0.32±0.06) 10−38 cm2/GeV per nucleon for antineutrinos.

Abstract: Using BEBC equipped with a hydrogen-filled neon-surrounded track-sensitive target, the charged current cross sections and structure functions of hydrogen and neon targets traversed by the same neutrinos and antineutrinos are compared directly. The measured total cross-section ratios between hydrogen and neon allow precise total cross-section values for hydrogen to be inferred. Using this normalization, the ν and ν hydrogen data are combined and the quark distributions in free nucleons, parametrised as functions of ξ, are extracted. This free-nucleon parametrisation is then compared directly with the neon data in order to measure nuclear effects such as those recently reported by the EMC collaboration. Abstract: Antineutrino interactions in BEBC are compared to look for differences between the differential cross sections per nucleon in neon and in deuterium. The identical geometries, beam spectra and muon identification criteria and acceptances allow comparison with very small systematic errors. The results are compared in detail with μ and e scattering data from EMC and SLAC. Abstract: An event with the decay chain Σ c + → Λ c + + π 0 , Λ c + → K − + p + π + , has been observed in an exposure of BEBC, equipped with a track sensitive target, to the wide band neutrino beam from the SPS at CERN. The event has a unique three constraint kinematic fit to the ΔS = − ΔQ reaction v + p → μ − + p + K − + π + + π + + π 0 with both gammas from the π 0 decay detected. The proton and other final state particles are identified. The masses are M ( Λ c + ) = 2290 ± 3 MeV/ c 2 , M ( Σ c + ) = 2457 ± 4 MeV/ c 2 and M ( Σ c + ) − M ( Λ c + ) = 168 ± 3 MeV/ c 2 . Including other data one obtains M ( Σ c ++ ) − M ( Σ c + ) = 0 ± 4 MeV/ c 2 .

Abstract: For e + energy > 0.3 GeV and 10 GeV ƒ = (v μ + Ne → μ − e + )/(v μ + Ne → μ − ) = (0.41 ± 0.15)% ; (ii) 1.2 ± 0.5 neutral strange particles are produced per μ − e + event; (iii) the lifetime of possible positron-parent particles is −10 s (90% C.L.); (iv) the cross section for direct e + production via the neutral current is + , decaying into e + … is −3 times that for μ − production, implying M (L + ) > 10 GeV.

Abstract: We have fully analysed all events with a single electron obtained in an exposure of BEBC to the 350 GeV wide-band neutrino beam at CERN. The data agrees well with expectations based on the calculated ν e flux and assuming μ−e universality. Using both the rate and the kinematic distributions, improved limits are set on ν e → ν X , ν μ → ν e , ν μ → ν τ mixing.

Abstract: A study is presented of μe events from an exposure of BEBC, filed with an heavyH 2/Ne mixture, to a wide band antineutrino beam at the CERN SPS. The promptμ + e − rate, based on the observation of 45 events withp μ>4 GeV/c andp e>0.8 GeV/c, is found to be 0.31±0.05±0.02%, in agreement with previous determinations made on much smaller statistics. The differential kinematical variables characterizing the events and the content of strange particles are as expected for the production of charmed hadrons which subsequently decay semi-leptonically. An upper limit of 2.0±10−4 at 90% C.L. is given for the production rate of promptμ + e + events. No evidence is found for a significant production of Beauty hadrons.

Abstract: A study is presented of dimuon events from an exposure of BEBC to a wide band ν beam from the CERN SPS. These data double the available statistics on ν induced dilepton events observed in bubble chambers. The relative production rate and V0 yield have been measured and found to agree with previous experiments. The analysis of several kinematical variables shows that the gros features of the data agree with the predictions of the GIM model. Abstract: A measurement of the total cross section for the reaction p p → π+π− has been performed for seven values of the incident momentum between 158 and 275 MeV/c. The values obtained, if compared with previous results at higher momenta, agree with a 1/s dependence. The differential cross section sssumed over the whole incident momentum range has also been measured and the result of a fit by Legendre polynomials is given.

Abstract: A sample of over 25,000 fully measured neutrino and antineutrino charged current interactions in BEBC includes 192 dilepton candidates. The prompt signal after subtraction of background is 41 ±7μ+e-, 35±7μ+μ- events from {Mathematical expression} interactions, and 32±7μ-μ+ events from ν interactions. There are 2 trileptons, μ-μ-e+ and μ-μ-μ+. Results are compared with other experimental data and with the standard model. Abstract: An exposure of BEBC equipped with the hydrogen-filled TST to the v μ wide band beam at the CERN SPS has been used to study v μ interactions on free protons. About neutral induced interactions have been observed inside the hydrogen and separated into charged current, neutral current and neutral hadron interactions using a multivariate discriminant analysis based on the kinematics of the events. The neutral to charged current cross-section ratio has been determined to be R p v = 0.33 ± 0.04. When combined with the value of R p v previously determined in the same experiment, the result is compatible with the prediction of the standard SU (2) × U (1) model for sin 2θ W = 0.24 -0.08 +0.06 and ρ = 1.07 -0.08 +0.06. Abstract: The reaction p p→K + K − has been studied for incident antiproton momenta between 1.3 and 1.5 GeV/c. A continuous scan has been made for invariant masses of the p p system between 2220 and 2240 MeV/c2 with a resolution of 0.6 MeV/c2 in the ξ (2230) region. No structure has been observed. Upper limits are given.

The motivation and the physics program of CPLEAR is presented and first analyses of the K0,K0BAR to pi+pi-, pi0pi0 and pi+pi-pi0 decays are discussed.
