Air pollution has been a significant environmental and public health concern in Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, for many years. The city experiences severe air pollution, particularly during the winter months. This study investigated the annual trends of outdoor and indoor PM 2.5 concentrations at two neighboring sites in Ulaanbaatar: an office and a household, using low-cost sensors. Both locations exhibited similar fluctuations in outdoor PM 2.5 concentrations over time, with ambient PM 2.5 levels beginning to rise in October and declining in April. During the mid-term of the heating season (November to February), hourly averaged PM 2.5 concentrations were exceptionally high, with peak pollution events exceeding ~ 1000 µg/m 3 . Notably, PM 2.5 concentrations were elevated during this heating season period. Time-activity patterns showed a decrease in PM 2.5 concentrations during the periods of 06:00-08:00 and 14:00-18:00. Furthermore, the study found that the indoor environment could remain safe when windows were well-sealed, even under severe outdoor pollution conditions. Overall, this study provided accurate insights into the annual patterns of PM 2.5 concentrations and demonstrated their fluctuations during the heating season when pollution levels were particularly high. The phenomenon of lithic miniaturization during the Late Pleistocene at times coincided with increased artifact standardization and cutting edge efficiency-likely reflecting the use of small, sharp artifacts as interchangeable inserts for composite cutting tools and hunting weapons. During Marine Isotope Stage 2, Upper Paleolithic toolmakers in northern East Asia specifically used pressure techniques to make small, highly standardized lithic artifacts called microblades. However, little is currently known about how microblades affected the cutting edge efficiency of the toolkits they were a part of. We applied three methods of analyzing cutting edge efficiency to two Upper Paleolithic assemblages recently excavated from Tolbor-17, Mongolia, that document the periods before and after the introduction of microblade technology to the Tolbor Valley. A model incorporating allometric relationships between blank cutting edge length and mass suggests no difference in efficiency between the two periods, while two more conventional approaches both indicate a significant increase. The potential for improved cutting edge efficiency is only observed when the microblade sample is artificially inflated via simulation. Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] contributes to cardiovascular disease risk. A genetically determined size polymorphism in apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)], determined by the number of Kringle (K) repeats, inversely regulates Lp(a) levels. Nongenetic factors including dietary saturated fat influence Lp(a) levels. However, less is known about the effects of carbohydrates including dietary sugars. In this double-blind, parallel arm study among 32 overweight/obese adults, we investigated the effect of consuming glucose- or fructose-sweetened beverages providing 25% of energy requirements for 10 weeks on Lp(a) level and assessed the role of the apo(a) size polymorphism. The mean (±SD) age of participants was 54 ± 8 years, 50% were women, and 75% were of European descent. Following the 10-week intervention, Lp(a) level was reduced by an average (±SEM) of -13.2% ± 4.3% in all participants (P = 0.005); -15.3% ± 7.8% in the 15 participants who consumed glucose (P = 0.07); and -11.3% ± 4.5% in the 17 participants who consumed fructose (P = 0.02), without any significant difference in the effect between the two sugar groups. Relative changes in Lp(a) levels were similar across subgroups of lower versus higher baseline Lp(a) level or carrier versus noncarrier of an atherogenic small (≤22K) apo(a) size. In contrast, LDL-C increased. In conclusion, in older, overweight/obese adults, consuming sugar-sweetened beverages reduced Lp(a) levels by ∼13% independently of apo(a) size variability and the type of sugar consumed. In this study, we first comprehensively studied peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and peroxydisulfate (PDS) activation mechanisms using N, O codoped sludge biochar (NOSB) to degrade organics from water. Among the catalysts, NOSB with a higher content of graphitic N, optimal edge nitrogen (pyridinic N and pyrrolic N), CO groups, sp 2 -hybridized C, and rich defects were demonstrated to be a superior catalyst. Therefore, by activating PDS and PMS, NOSB exhibited the highest rate of BPA degradation, which was 22-fold and 13-fold that of pristine sludge biochar, respectively. However, owing to different oxidation potentials and molecular structures, PMS and PDS show different degradation performances due to various catalytic mechanisms occurring, even with the same biochar. Due to the asymmetrical structure of PMS, electrons passed from PMS to NOSB and further generated singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ), which governs the degradation of bisphenol A with an auxiliary contribution of single electron transfer. Meanwhile, PDS is reduced at the Lewis basic sites of NOSB, forming inner-surface-bound {PDS-NOSB}, which was oxidizing around neighboring carbon and decomposed targets through transferring single and double electrons. NOSB is promising for practical applications because of its adaptation to a wide pH range, anions, high total organic carbon removal, tunable active sites, and re-usability for degrading organics via PMS/PDS activation. Background: Guideline-recommended low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) thresholds are often not achieved in women. The proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type-9 inhibitor (PCSK9i) monoclonal antibodies can help further reduce LDL-C and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) although differences in efficacy by sex and type are less understood., Objectives: The authors sought to determine if there are differences in the efficacy of LDL-C lowering and reduction in the risk of MACE by sex and type of PCSK9i., Methods: A comprehensive literature search was done through October 17, 2022, for published trials comparing PCSK9i vs control. Outcomes assessed were LDL-C reduction and incidence of MACE following the use of PCSK9i vs placebo, stratified by sex and type of PCSK9i used., Results: We identified 16 trials with 54,996 adults, and 15,143 (27.5%) of them were female. PCSK9i significantly reduced MACE compared to placebo in both women (HR: 0.86, 95% CI: 0.74-0.97, P  < 0.001) and men (HR: 0.85, 95% CI: 0.79-0.91, P  < 0.001) with no significant sex difference (MD -0.01, 95% CI: -0.14 to -0.13, P  = 0.930). PCSK9i also significantly reduced LDL-C levels in both sexes at 12 weeks (females: MD -62.57, 95% CI: -70.24 to -54.91, P  < 0.001; males: MD -66.19, 95% CI: -72.03 to -60.34, P  < 0.001) and 24 weeks (females: MD -47.52, 95% CI: -52.94 to -42.09, P  < 0.001; males: MD -54.07, 95% CI: -59.46 to -48.68, P  < 0.001). Significant sex difference was seen in the LDL reduction of PCSK9i for both 12 weeks (males vs females: MD -4.55, 95% CI: -7.34 to -1.75, P  < 0.01) and 24 weeks (males vs females: MD -7.11, 95% CI: -9.99 to -4.23, P  < 0.001)., Conclusions: The use of PCSK9i results in significant LDL-C and MACE reduction in both males and females. While there is no significant sex difference in MACE reduction, LDL-C reduction is greater in males than in females. Reducing dietary saturated fatty acids (SFA) intake results in a clinically significant lowering of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) across ethnicities. In contrast, dietary SFA's role in modulating emerging cardiovascular risk factors in different ethnicities remains poorly understood. Elevated levels of lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], an independent cardiovascular risk factor, disproportionally affect individuals of African descent. Here, we assessed the responses in Lp(a) levels to dietary SFA reduction in 166 African Americans enrolled in GET-READI (The Gene-Environment Trial on Response in African Americans to Dietary Intervention), a randomized controlled feeding trial. Participants were fed two diets in random order for 5 weeks each: 1) an average American diet (AAD) (37% total fat: 16% SFA), and 2) a diet similar to the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet (25% total fat: 6% SFA). The participants' mean age was 35 years, 70% were women, the mean BMI was 28 kg/m 2 , and the mean LDL-C was 116 mg/dl. Compared to the AAD diet, LDL-C was reduced by the DASH-type diet (mean change: -12 mg/dl) as were total cholesterol (-16 mg/dl), HDL-C (-5 mg/dl), apoA-1 (-9 mg/dl) and apoB-100 (-5 mg/dl) (all P < 0.0001). In contrast, Lp(a) levels increased following the DASH-type diet compared with AAD (median: 58 vs. 44 mg/dl, P < 0.0001). In conclusion, in a large cohort of African Americans, reductions in SFA intake significantly increased Lp(a) levels while reducing LDL-C. Background: Little is known about the proportion and causes of out-of-hospital deaths in Mongolia. In this study, we aimed to determine the proportion and causes of out-of-hospital deaths in Mongolia during a six-month observation period before the COVID-19 pandemic., Methods: In a retrospective study, the Mongolian National Death Registry was screened for all deaths occurring from 01 to 06/2020. The proportion and causes of out-of-hospital deaths, causes of out-of-hospital deaths likely treatable by emergency/critical care interventions, as well as sex, regional and seasonal differences in the proportion and causes of out-of-hospital deaths were determined. The primary endpoint was the proportion and causes of out-of-hospital death in children and adults. Descriptive statistical methods, the Fisher's Exact, multirow Chi 2 -or Mann-Whitney-U-rank sum tests were used for data analysis., Findings: Five-thousand-five-hundred-fifty-three of 7762 deaths (71.5%) occurred outside of a hospital. The proportion of out-of-hospital deaths was lower in children than adults (39.3% vs. 74.8%, p  < 0.001). Trauma, chronic neurological diseases, lower respiratory tract infections, congenital birth defects, and neonatal disorders were the causes of out-of-hospital deaths resulting in most years of life lost in children. In adults, chronic heart diseases, trauma, liver cancer, poisonings, and self-harm caused the highest burden of premature mortality. The proportion of out-of-hospital deaths did not differ between females and males (70.5% vs. 72.2%, p  = 0.09). The proportion (all, p  < 0.001; adults, p  < 0.001; children, p  < 0.001) and causes (adults, p  < 0.001; children, p  < 0.001) of out-of-hospital deaths differed between Mongolian regions and Ulaanbaatar. The proportion of out-of-hospital deaths was higher during winter than spring/summer months (72.3% vs. 69.9%, p  = 0.03). An expert panel estimated that 49.3% of out-of-hospital deaths were likely treatable by emergency/critical care interventions., Interpretation: With regional and seasonal variations, about 75% of Mongolian adults and 40% of Mongolian children died outside of a hospital. Heart diseases, trauma, cancer, and poisonings resulted in most years of life lost. In this perspective, we discuss new evidence relating to current dietary recommendations to reduce SFA intake to modulate an individual's global risk of CVD. Although it is well established that lowering dietary SFA intake has a beneficial effect on LDL cholesterol concentrations, findings increasingly indicate an opposite effect on lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] concentrations. In recent years, many studies have firmly established a role for an elevated Lp(a) concentration as a genetically regulated, causal, and prevalent risk factor for CVD. However, there is less awareness of the effect of dietary SFA intake on Lp(a) concentrations. This study discusses this issue and highlights the contrasting effect of reducing dietary SFA intake on LDL cholesterol and Lp(a), 2 highly atherogenic lipoproteins. This calls attention to the need for precision nutrition approaches that move beyond a "one-size-fits-all" approach. To illustrate the contrast, we describe the dynamic contributions of Lp(a) and LDL cholesterol concentrations to CVD risk during interventions with a low-SFA diet, with the hope that this will stimulate further studies and discussions regarding dietary management of CVD risk., (Copyright © 2023 The Authors. Figurative depictions in art first occur ca. 50,000 years ago in Europe, Africa, and Southeast Asia. Considered by most as an advanced form of symbolic behavior, they are restricted to our species. Here, we report a piece of ornament interpreted as a phallus-like representation. It was found in a 42,000 ca.-year-old Upper Paleolithic archaeological layer at the open-air archaeological site of Tolbor-21, in Mongolia. Mineralogical, microscopic, and rugosimetric analyses points toward the allochthonous origin of the pendant and a complex functional history. Three-dimensional phallic pendants are unknown in the Paleolithic record, and this discovery predates the earliest known sexed anthropomorphic representation. It attests that hunter-gatherer communities used sex anatomical attributes as symbols at a very early stage of their dispersal in the region. Introduction: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading of cause of death in Mississippi. We explored trends in CVD death rates among adults in Mississippi aged 35 years or older to assess changes from 2000 through 2018., Methods: We extracted data from Mississippi Vital Statistics from 2000 through 2018. We used underlying cause-of-death codes from the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) to identify CVD deaths; we included all cases with codes I00-I09, I11, I13, I20-I51, I60-I69, and I70. We calculated age-adjusted CVD death rates for the overall population by age, race, sex, and race-by-sex groups., Results: Overall, the age-adjusted CVD death rate declined from 832.3 deaths per 100,000 population in 2000 to 550.5 deaths per 100,000 in 2018, a relative decline of 33.9% and an average annual decline of -2.3% (95% CI, -2.7% to -1.8%). Age-adjusted CVD death rates declined from 2000 through 2018 for all groups, but the magnitude of decline varied by subgroup (men, -2.0%; women, -2.6%; non-Hispanic Black, -2.4%; non-Hispanic White, -2.2%; non-Hispanic Black women, -3.0%; non-Hispanic White women, -2.5%; non-Hispanic Black men -2.1%; non-Hispanic White men -2.0%). Age-specific analysis indicated a significant average annual increase of 1.7% (95% CI, 0.6%-2.9%) from 2011 through 2018 for the group aged 55 to 64 years., Conclusion: From 2000 through 2018, age-adjusted CVD death rates in Mississippi declined for all age/race/sex groups. However, the magnitude of decline varied by subgroup. Targeted interventions for CVD risk reduction are needed for adults aged 55 to 64 years in Mississippi, the only age group in which we observed a significant annual increase in CVD death rates.

Heart failure (HF) is a major health care burden increasing in prevalence over time. Effective, evidence-based interventions for HF prevention and management are needed to improve patient longevity, symptom control, and quality of life. Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet interventions can have a positive impact for HF patients. However, the absence of a consensus for comprehensive dietary guidelines and for pragmatic evidence limits the ability of health care providers to implement clinical recommendations. The refinement of medical nutrition therapy through precision nutrition approaches has the potential to reduce the burden of HF, improve clinical care, and meet the needs of diverse patients. The aim of this review is to summarize current evidence related to HF dietary recommendations including DASH diet nutritional interventions and to develop initial recommendations for DASH diet implementation in outpatient HF management. Articles involving human studies were obtained using the following search terms: Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH diet), diet pattern, diet, metabolism, and heart failure. Only full-text articles written in English were included in this review. As DASH nutritional interventions have been proposed, limitations of these studies are the small sample size and non-randomization of interventions, leading to less reliable evidence. Randomized controlled interventions are needed to offer definitive evidence related to the use of the DASH diet in HF management.

Background Lp(a) (lipoprotein(a)) is the major lipoprotein carrier of oxidized phospholipids (OxPL) and this function mediates Lp(a) atherogenicity. However, the relationship between OxPL, Lp(a), and genetic and biological characteristics remains poorly understood. We assessed the relationship between Lp(a)-bound OxPL, apolipoprotein(a) (apo(a)) size, age, and family structure in 2 racial groups. Methods and Results Healthy Black and White families were recruited from the general population (age: 6-74 years, n=267). OxPL and Lp(a) levels were assayed enzymatically; apo(a) isoform, LPA allele sizes, and allele-specific Lp(a) levels were determined. Lp(a)-OxPL levels did not differ significantly by racial and age groups. Lp(a)-OxPL levels were associated with total plasma Lp(a) in all participants and in race-specific analyses. Further, OxPL levels were significantly associated with allele-specific Lp(a) levels carried by the smaller apo(a) size in all participants (β=0.33, P =0.0003) as well as separately for Black (β=0.50, P =0.0032) and White (β=0.26, P =0.0181) participants. A significant association of OxPL with allele-specific Lp(a) levels for larger apo(a) sizes was seen only in Black participants (β=0.53, P =0.0076). In this group, Lp(a)-OxPL levels were also heritable (h 2 =0.29, P =0.0235), resulting in a significant interracial difference in heritability between Black and White people ( P =0.0352). Conclusions Lp(a)-OxPL levels were associated with allele-specific Lp(a) level carried on smaller apo(a) sizes and among Black participants also for larger apo(a) sizes. The heritability estimates for Lp(a)-bound OxPL differed by race.

Structural and thermodynamic factors which may influence burnt bone survivorship in archaeological contexts have not been fully described. A highly controlled experimental reference collection of fresh, modern bone burned in temperature increments 100-1200˚C is presented here to document the changes to bone tissue relevant to preservation using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Specific parameters investigated here include the rate of organic loss, amount of bone mineral recrystallization, and average growth in bone mineral crystallite size. An archaeological faunal assemblage ca. 30,000 years ago from Tolbor-17 (Mongolia) is additionally considered to confirm visibility of changes seen in the modern reference sample and to relate structural changes to commonly used zooarchaeological scales of burning intensity. The timing of our results indicates that the loss of organic components in both modern and archaeological bone burnt to temperatures up to 700˚C are not accompanied by growth changes in the average crystallite size of bone mineral bioapatite, leaving the small and reactive bioapatite crystals of charred and carbonized bone exposed to diagenetic agents in depositional contexts. For bones burnt to temperatures of 700˚C and above, two major increases in average crystallite size are noted which effectively decrease the available surface area of bone mineral crystals, decreasing reactivity and offering greater thermodynamic stability despite the mechanical fragility of calcined bone. Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an independent, causal, genetically determined risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We provide an overview of current knowledge on Lp(a) and CVD risk, and the effect of pharmacological agents on Lp(a). Since evidence is accumulating that diet modulates Lp(a), the focus of this paper is on the effect of dietary intervention on Lp(a). We identified seven trials with 15 comparisons of the effect of saturated fat (SFA) replacement on Lp(a). While replacement of SFA with carbohydrate, monounsaturated fat (MUFA), or polyunsaturated fat (PUFA) consistently lowered low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), heterogeneity in the Lp(a) response was observed. In two trials, Lp(a) increased with carbohydrate replacement; one trial showed no effect and another showed Lp(a) lowering. MUFA replacement increased Lp(a) in three trials; three trials showed no effect and one showed lowering. PUFA or PUFA + MUFA inconsistently affected Lp(a) in four trials. Seven trials of diets with differing macronutrient compositions showed similar divergence in the effect on LDL-C and Lp(a). The identified clinical trials show diet modestly affects Lp(a) and often in the opposing direction to LDL-C. Further research is needed to understand how diet affects Lp(a) and its properties, and the lack of concordance between diet-induced LDL-C and Lp(a) changes.

Context: Inhibition of proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) reduces lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels, but the association of PCSK9 with Lp(a) level and its major determinant, apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)] size, is not fully understood., Objective: To assess the relationship between PCSK9, Lp(a) level, apo(a) size, age, and ethnicity/race., Design: Cross-sectional., Setting: General population., Participants: Healthy African Americans and Caucasians (n = 267); age range: 6 to 74 years., Interventions: None., Main Outcome Measures: PCSK9 levels, apo(a) isoform and LPA allele sizes, and isoform-specific Lp(a) levels., Results: Plasma PCSK9 levels were significantly higher in African Americans vs Caucasians, in females vs males, and in adults vs children. PCSK9 levels were not associated with total plasma Lp(a) levels either in all participants or in ethnicity-specific analyses. However, PCSK9 levels were significantly positively associated with isoform-specific Lp(a) levels carried by the larger apo(a) size in all participants ( r  = 0.139, P  = 0.0361). In ethnicity/race analyses, a significant association was seen for African Americans ( r  = 0.268, P  = 0.0199), but not for Caucasians. In contrast, there were no significant associations of PCSK9 with isoform-specific Lp(a) levels for the smaller apo(a) sizes in all participants nor in ethnic-specific analyses. Furthermore, heritability (h 2 ) analyses revealed a significant heritability for PCSK9 level in both ethnic groups, with a higher estimate in Caucasians than in African Americans (47% vs 22%, respectively)., Conclusions: Among African Americans, but not Caucasians, PCSK9 levels were associated with isoform-specific Lp(a) levels carried on larger, but not smaller, apo(a) sizes. Heritability of LPA allele, apo(a) isoform sizes, and isoform-associated lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels was studied in 82 Caucasian and African-American families with two parents and two children (age: 6-74 years). We determined: 1 ) Lp(a) levels; 2 ) LPA allele sizes; 3 ) apo(a) isoform sizes; and 4 ) isoform-specific apo(a) levels (ISLs), the amount of Lp(a) carried by an individual apo(a) isoform. Trait heritability was estimated by mid-parent-offspring analysis. The ethnicity-adjusted heritability estimate for Lp(a) level was 0.95. Heritability for ISLs corresponding to the smaller LPA allele in a given allele-pair was higher than that corresponding to the larger LPA allele (0.91 vs. 0.59, P = 0.017). Although not statistically different, heritability for both apo(a) isoforms (0.90 vs. 0.70) and LPA alleles (0.98 vs. 0.82) was higher for the smaller versus larger sizes. Heritability was generally lower in African-Americans versus Caucasians with a 4-fold difference for the larger LPA allele (0.25 vs. 0.94, P = 0.001). In Caucasians, an overall higher heritability pattern was noted for the older (≥47 years) versus younger (<47 years) families. In conclusion, Lp(a) level and traits associated with the smaller LPA alleles were strongly determined by genetics, although with a varying ethnic influence. Using the case of Ulaanbaatar, Erdenet, and Darkhan cities from Mongolia, the study aimed to assess the contamination level and health risk assessment of heavy metals (As, Cr, Pb, Ni, and Zn) in urban soil. A total of 78 samples was collected from a variety of functional areas. The geoaccumulation index (I geo ) and integrated pollution index (IPI) were used in pollution assessment, while the health risk was scored using a hazard quotient ( HQ ) and health index (HI) for non-carcinogenic heavy metals, as well as a lifetime average daily dose ( LADD ) for carcinogenic heavy metals. The results show that the concentration of heavy metals in the soil samples taken from Darkhan city, which presented "uncontaminated" values in terms of I geo for all metals, was relatively lower than other cities within the contamination assessment. Furthermore, the I geo value signified "uncontimated to heavily contaminated" soil in the Ulaanbaatar and Erdenet cities. Typically, as for the IPI that observed similar trends with I geo , the mean IPI values in Ulaanbaatar, Erdenet, and Darkhan were 1.33 (moderate level of pollution), 1.83 (moderate level of pollution), and 0.94 (low level of pollution), respectively. In terms of the assessment of potential health risk, there was a particular or different level of ingestion, dermal contact, and inhalation exposure pathway for human health. Among these three different pathways, the ingestion was estimated by the main contributor for health risk. Each value of HQ and HI indicated that soil heavy metals of studied cities were at a safe level (<1) or had the absence of a significant health risk there. In addition, the potential health risk for children was greater than for adults, where heavy metal values of HI for children had a high value compared to adults. We estimated carcinogenic risks through the inhalation exposure, and as a result, there were no significant risks for human health in the studied cities from three elements (As, Cr, and Ni).

The purpose of this study was to identify pollution sources by characterizing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from total suspended particles in Ulaanbaatar City. Fifteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were measured in total suspended particle samples collected from different sites, such as the urban center, industrial district and ger (Mongolian traditional house) areas, and residential areas both in heating (January, March), and non-heating (September) periods in 2017. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentration ranged between 131 and 773 ng·m -3 in winter, 22.2 and 530.6 ng·m -3 in spring, and between 1.4 and 54.6 ng·m -3 in autumn. Concentrations of specific polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons such as phenanthrene were higher in the ger area in winter and spring seasons, and the pyrene concentration was dominant in late summer in the residential area. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons concentrations in the ger area were particularly higher than the other sites, especially in winter. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon ratios indicated that vehicle emissions were likely the main source at the city center in the winter time. Mixed contributions from biomass, coal, and petroleum combustion were responsible for the particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon pollution at other sampling sites during the whole observation period. The lifetime inhalation cancer risk values in the ger area due to winter pollution were estimated to be 1.2 × 10 -5 and 2.1 × 10 -5 for child and adult exposures, respectively, which significantly exceed Environmental Protection Agency guidelines.

A skullcap found in the Salkhit Valley in northeast Mongolia is, to our knowledge, the only Pleistocene hominin fossil found in the country. It was initially described as an individual with possible archaic affinities, but its ancestry has been debated since the discovery. Here, we determine the age of the Salkhit skull by compound-specific radiocarbon dating of hydroxyproline to 34,950-33,900 Cal. BP (at 95% probability), placing the Salkhit individual in the Early Upper Paleolithic period. We reconstruct the complete mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) of the specimen. It falls within a group of modern human mtDNAs (haplogroup N) that is widespread in Eurasia today. The results now place the specimen into its proper chronometric and biological context and allow us to begin integrating it with other evidence for the human occupation of this region during the Paleolithic, as well as wider Pleistocene sequences across Eurasia.

We previously demonstrated an association between lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels and atherosclerosis in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-seropositive women. The effects of antiretroviral therapy (ART) on Lp(a) levels in relation to apo(a) size polymorphism remain unclear. ART effects on allele-specific apo(a) level (ASL), an Lp(a) level associated with individual apo(a) alleles within each allele-pair, were determined in 126 HIV-seropositive women. ART effects were tested by a mixed-effects model across pre-ART and post-ART first and third visits. Data from 120 HIV-seronegative women were used. The mean age was 38 years; most were African-American (∼70%). Pre-ART ASLs associated with the larger (4.6 mg/dl vs. 8.0 mg/dl, P = 0.024) or smaller (13 mg/dl vs. 19 mg/dl, P = 0.041) apo(a) sizes were lower in the HIV-seropositive versus HIV-seronegative group, as was the prevalence of a high Lp(a) level ( P = 0.013). Post-ART ASL and prevalence of high Lp(a) or apo(a) sizes and frequency of small size apo(a) (22 kringles) did not differ between the two groups. ART increased Lp(a) level (from 18 to 24 mg/dl, P < 0.0001) and both ASLs ( P < 0.001). In conclusion, regardless of genetic control, Lp(a) can be modulated by HIV and its treatment. Background : Food insecurity is a public health problem. There is limited data on food insecurity in Mississippi. Methods : We analyzed data from the 2015 Mississippi Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which included the Social Context Module for 5870 respondents. Respondents who indicated that in the past 12 months they were "always", "usually", or "sometimes" "worried or stressed about having enough money to buy nutritious meals" were considered food insecure. Food insecurity was compared across sociodemographic and health characteristics using chi-square tests, and the association between food insecurity and select cardiovascular disease risk factors was assessed using logistic regression. Results : The prevalence of food insecurity was 42.9%. Compared to the referent group, Mississippi adults with high blood pressure had 51% higher odds, those with diabetes had 30% higher odds, those who were not physically active had 36% higher odds, and those who consumed fewer than five fruits and vegetables daily had 50% higher odds of being food insecure. Conclusion : Among Mississippi adults, food insecurity is associated with high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, fruit and vegetable consumption, physical inactivity, and smoking.

Keratins extracted from human hair have emerged as a promising biomaterial for various biomedical applications, partly due to their wide availability, low cost, minimal immune response, and the potential to engineer autologous tissue constructs. However, the fabrication of keratin-based scaffolds typically relies on limited crosslinking mechanisms, such as via physical interactions or disulfide bond formation, which are time-consuming and result in relatively poor mechanical strength and stability. Here, we report the preparation of photocrosslinkable keratin-polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogels via the thiol-norbornene "click" reaction, which can be formed within one minute upon irradiation of visible light. The resulting keratin-PEG hydrogels showed highly tunable mechanical properties of up to 45 kPa in compressive modulus, and long-term stability in buffer solutions and cell culture media. These keratin-based hydrogels were tested as cell culture substrates in both two-dimensional surface seeding and three-dimensional cell encapsulation, demonstrating excellent cytocompatibility to support the attachment, spreading, and proliferation of fibroblast cells. Moreover, the photocrosslinking mechanism makes keratin-based hydrogel suitable for various microfabrication techniques, such as micropatterning and wet spinning, to fabricate cell-laden tissue constructs with different architectures. We believe that the unique features of this photocrosslinkable human hair keratin hydrogel promise new opportunities for their future biomedical applications.

An elevated level of lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] is a risk factor for CVD. Alirocumab, a monoclonal antibody to proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9, is reported to reduce Lp(a) levels. The relationship of Lp(a) reduction with apo(a) size polymorphism, phenotype, and dominance pattern and LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) reduction was evaluated in a pooled analysis of 155 hypercholesterolemic patients (75 with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia) from two clinical trials. Alirocumab significantly reduced total Lp(a) (pooled median: -21%, P = 0.0001) and allele-specific apo(a), an Lp(a) level carried by the smaller (median: -18%, P = 0.002) or the larger (median: -37%, P = 0.0005) apo(a) isoform, at week 8 versus baseline. The percent reduction in Lp(a) level with alirocumab was similar across apo(a) phenotypes (single vs. double bands) and carriers and noncarriers of a small size apo(a) (≤22 kringles). The percent reduction in LDL-C correlated significantly with the percent reduction in Lp(a) level ( r = 0.407, P < 0.0001) and allele-specific apo(a) level associated with the smaller ( r = 0.390, P < 0.0001) or larger ( r = 0.270, P = 0.0183) apo(a) sizes. Objective: In the general population, lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] has been established as an independent causal risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Lp(a) levels are to a major extent regulated by a size polymorphism in the apolipoprotein(a) [apo(a)] gene. The roles of Lp(a)/apo(a) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-related elevated cardiovascular disease risk remain unclear., Approach and Results: The associations between total plasma Lp(a) level, allele-specific apo(a) level, an Lp(a) level carried by individual apo(a) alleles, and common carotid artery intima-media thickness were assessed in 150 HIV-infected and 100 HIV-uninfected women in the WIHS (Women's Interagency HIV Study). Linear regression analyses with and without adjustments were used. The cohort was young (mean age, ≈31 years), with the majority being Blacks (≈70%). The prevalence of a small size apo(a) (≤22 Kringle repeats) or a high Lp(a) level (≥30 mg/dL) was similar by HIV status. Total plasma Lp(a) level ( P =0.029) and allele-specific apo(a) level carried by the smaller apo(a) sizes ( P =0.022) were significantly associated with carotid artery intima-media thickness in the HIV-infected women only. After accounting for confounders (age, race, smoking, body mass index, blood pressure, hepatitis C virus coinfection, menopause, plasma lipids, treatment status, CD4 + T cell count, and HIV/RNA viral load), the association remained significant for both Lp(a) ( P =0.035) and allele-specific apo(a) level carried by the smaller apo(a) sizes ( P =0.010) in the HIV-infected women. Notably, none of the other lipids/lipoproteins was associated with carotid artery intima-media thickness., Conclusions: Lp(a) and allele-specific apo(a) levels predict carotid artery intima-media thickness in HIV-infected young women. In Mongolia, diagnostic tests for the detection of the sexually transmitted mycoplasmas, ureaplasmas, Herpes simplex virus (HSV), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are currently not routinely used in clinical settings and the frequency of these STIs are enigmatic. The prevalence of these STI pathogens were prospectively evaluated among 200 Mongolian pregnant women and their newborns and correlated with pregnancy outcome. TaqMan PCRs were used to detect bacterial and viral STI pathogens in pre-birth vaginal swabs of the pregnant women and in oral swabs of their newborns. A standardized questionnaire concerning former and present pregnancies was developed and linear regression analysis was used to correlate pathogen detection with pregnancy outcome. Ureaplasmas were the most prevalent of the tested pathogens (positive in 90.5% positive women and 47.5% newborns), followed by mycoplasmas (32.5% and 7.5%), chlamydia (14.5% and 7.5%), trichomonas (8.5% and 4.0%) and gonococcus (0.5% and 0%). CMV was found in 46.5% of the pregnant women and in 10.5% of their newborns, whereas HSV-2 was detected in only two mothers. Multiple regression analyses indicate that colonization of the mothers with U. urealyticum, M. hominis, T. vaginalis or CMV is associated with transmission to newborns and that transmission of M. hominis or CMV from Mongolian pregnant women to offspring is associated with reduced neonatal length and gestational age. Thus, diagnostic tests for their detection should be implemented in the clinical settings in Mongolia.

Despite the significant technological advancement in tissue engineering, challenges still exist towards the development of complex and fully functional tissue constructs that mimic their natural counterparts. To address these challenges, bioprinting has emerged as an enabling technology to create highly organized three-dimensional (3D) vascular networks within engineered tissue constructs to promote the transport of oxygen, nutrients, and waste products, which can hardly be realized using conventional microfabrication techniques. Here, we report the development of a versatile 3D bioprinting strategy that employs biomimetic biomaterials and an advanced extrusion system to deposit perfusable vascular structures with highly ordered arrangements in a single-step process. In particular, a specially designed cell-responsive bioink consisting of gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA), sodium alginate, and 4-arm poly(ethylene glycol)-tetra-acrylate (PEGTA) was used in combination with a multilayered coaxial extrusion system to achieve direct 3D bioprinting. This blend bioink could be first ionically crosslinked by calcium ions followed by covalent photocrosslinking of GelMA and PEGTA to form stable constructs. The rheological properties of the bioink and the mechanical strengths of the resulting constructs were tuned by the introduction of PEGTA, which facilitated the precise deposition of complex multilayered 3D perfusable hollow tubes. This blend bioink also displayed favorable biological characteristics that supported the spreading and proliferation of encapsulated endothelial and stem cells in the bioprinted constructs, leading to the formation of biologically relevant, highly organized, perfusable vessels. These characteristics make this novel 3D bioprinting technique superior to conventional microfabrication or sacrificial templating approaches for fabrication of the perfusable vasculature. We envision that our advanced bioprinting technology and bioink formulation may also have significant potentials in engineering large-scale vascularized tissue constructs towards applications in organ transplantation and repair., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Levels of lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)], a complex between an LDL-like lipid moiety containing one copy of apoB, and apo(a), a plasminogen-derived carbohydrate-rich hydrophilic protein, are primarily genetically regulated. Although stable intra-individually, Lp(a) levels have a skewed distribution inter-individually and are strongly impacted by a size polymorphism of the LPA gene, resulting in a variable number of kringle IV (KIV) units, a key motif of apo(a). The variation in KIV units is a strong predictor of plasma Lp(a) levels resulting in stable plasma levels across the lifespan. Studies have demonstrated pronounced differences across ethnicities with regard to Lp(a) levels and some of this difference, but not all of it, can be explained by genetic variations across ethnic groups. Increasing evidence suggests that age, sex, and hormonal impact may have a modest modulatory influence on Lp(a) levels. Among clinical conditions, Lp(a) levels are reported to be affected by kidney and liver diseases.

To date, much effort has been expended on making high-performance microscopes through better instrumentation. Recently, it was discovered that physical magnification of specimens was possible, through a technique called expansion microscopy (ExM), raising the question of whether physical magnification, coupled to inexpensive optics, could together match the performance of high-end optical equipment, at a tiny fraction of the price. Here we show that such "hybrid microscopy" methods--combining physical and optical magnifications--can indeed achieve high performance at low cost. By physically magnifying objects, then imaging them on cheap miniature fluorescence microscopes ("mini-microscopes"), it is possible to image at a resolution comparable to that previously attainable only with benchtop microscopes that present costs orders of magnitude higher. We believe that this unprecedented hybrid technology that combines expansion microscopy, based on physical magnification, and mini-microscopy, relying on conventional optics--a process we refer to as Expansion Mini-Microscopy (ExMM)--is a highly promising alternative method for performing cost-effective, high-resolution imaging of biological samples. With further advancement of the technology, we believe that ExMM will find widespread applications for high-resolution imaging particularly in research and healthcare scenarios in undeveloped countries or remote places.

In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR TB) was diagnosed for more than a third of new sputum smear-positive tuberculosis patients for whom treatment had failed. This finding suggests a significant risk for community-acquired MDR TB and a need to make rapid molecular drug susceptibility testing available to more people.

Background: The overall burden of chronic disease, inflammation and cardiovascular risk increases with age. Whether the relationship between age and inflammation is impacted by presence of an adverse metabolic burden is not known., Methods: We determined inflammatory markers in humans (336 Caucasians and 224 African Americans) and in mice, representing a spectrum of age, weight and metabolic burden., Results: In humans, levels of inflammatory markers increased significantly with age in subjects without the metabolic syndrome, (P=0.009 and P=0.037 for C-reactive protein, P<0.001 and P=0.001 for fibrinogen, P<0.001 and P=0.005 for serum amyloid-A, for Caucasians and African Americans, respectively). In contrast, trend patterns of inflammatory markers did not change significantly with age in subjects with metabolic syndrome in either ethnic group, except for fibrinogen in Caucasians. A composite z-score for systemic inflammation increased significantly with age in subjects without metabolic syndrome (P=0.004 and P<0.006 for Caucasians and African Americans, respectively) but not in subjects with metabolic syndrome (P=0.009 for difference in age trend between metabolic syndrome and non-metabolic syndrome). In contrast, no similar age trend was found in vascular inflammation. The findings in humans were paralleled by results in mice as serum amyloid-A levels increased across age (range 2-15 months, P<0.01) and were higher in ob/ob mice compared to control mice (P<0.001)., Conclusions: Presence of a metabolic challenge in mice and humans influences levels of inflammatory markers over a wide age range. Our results underscore that already at a young age, presence of a metabolic burden enhances inflammation to a level that appears to be similar to that of decades older people without metabolic syndrome.

Regulating the detachment of adhered living cells from a surface is a key technological requirement to obtain specific cells in the field of cellular engineering. Here, we describe dynamic control of cell adhesion and detachment at a photoreactive and cytocompatible phospholipid polymer surface. The surface was prepared using the amphiphilic and water-insoluble substance poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine-co-n-butyl methacrylate) (PMB) bearing 4-[4-(1-hydroxyethyl)-2-methoxy-5-nitrophenoxy]butyric acid (PL) groups in its side chain (PMB-PL). On this prepared surface, the photoinduced control of human epidermoid carcinoma cancer cells (A431 cells) and primary murine embryonic fibroblast (PMEF) cells was examined. The PMB-PL surface allowed successful control of living cells adhesion with photoreactivity. The efficiency of cell detachment obtained was approximately 50% of the initial number of adhered cells. The PL groups at the surface provide adhesion points for cells, as evidenced by the fact that after photoreaction of PL groups by photoirradiation, the number of adhered cells on the surface considerably decreased. Additionally, when the polymer surface was re-used after the first photoirradiation, cells did not adhere to it, and low detachment was observed. The functionalities of the cells detached by photoreaction were evaluated. The proliferation rate and morphological changes of cells were as the same as those of cells detached by conventional enzymatic digestion. Moreover, the extracellular expression levels of transmembrane proteins on cells detached by photoirradiation showed no significant difference with those seen on normal cells. Objective: Mechanisms underlying the cardiovascular risk of lipoprotein(a) are poorly understood. We investigated the relationship of apolipoprotein(a) (apo(a)) size, lipoprotein(a), and allele-specific apo(a) levels with HIV disease activity parameters in a biethnic population., Methods and Results: Lipoprotein(a) and allele-specific apo(a) levels were determined in 139 white and 168 black HIV-positive patients. Plasma HIV RNA viral load and CD4+ T-cell count were used as surrogates for disease activity. Lipoprotein(a) and allele-specific apo(a) levels were higher in blacks than whites (for both P<0.001). Apo(a) allele size distribution was similar between the 2 ethnic groups, with a median apo(a) size of 28 kringle 4 repeats. Allele-specific apo(a) levels were positively associated with CD4+ T-cell count (P=0.027) and negatively with plasma HIV RNA viral load (P<0.001). Further, allele-specific apo(a) levels associated with smaller (<28 kringle 4) atherogenic apo(a) sizes were higher in subjects with CD4+ T-cell counts of ≥350 (P=0.002)., Conclusions: Allele-specific apo(a) levels were higher in subjects with high CD4+ T-cell count or low plasma HIV RNA viral load. The findings suggest that HIV disease activity reduced allele-specific apo(a) levels. Higher allele-specific apo(a) levels associated with atherogenic small apo(a) sizes might contribute to increased cardiovascular risk in HIV-positive subjects with improved disease status.

Non-invasive and effective cell recovery from culture substrates is important for the passage and characterization of cells. In this study, a photoreactive polymer surface, which uses UV-irradiation to control substrate cell adhesion, was prepared. The photoreactive phospholipid polymer (PMB-PL) reported herein, was composed of a both 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) unit as a cytocompatible unit and methacrylate bearing a photolabile nitrobenzyl group. The PMB-PL polymer was used to coat a cell culture substrate thus affording a photoreactive surface. Surface analysis of the PMB-PL coating indicated a strong photoresponse owing to the sensitivity of the PL unit. Before light exposure, the PMB-PL surface provided cell adhesion. Following UV-irradiation, the PMB-PL coating was converted to a neutral ζ-potential and hydrophilic surface. The photoreactive surface conversion process allowed for the detachment of adhered cells from the PMB-PL surface while maintaining cell viability. Objective: Levels of acute phase reactants are affected by age. The extent to which cardiovascular risk associated with aging is due to an increase in the inflammatory burden is not known. We assessed the relationship with age of inflammatory markers, representing (1) systemic (C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, and serum amyloid-A) and (2) vascular (lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A(2) and pentraxin-3) inflammation., Methods and Results: We determined lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A(2) mass and activity, C-reactive protein, fibrinogen, serum amyloid-A, and pentraxin-3 levels and other cardiovascular disease risk factors in 336 whites and 224 African Americans. Levels of systemic inflammatory markers increased significantly with age in both ethnic groups (P<0.05 for all), whereas trend patterns of vascular inflammatory markers did not change significantly with age for either group. In multivariate regression models adjusting for confounding variables, age remained independently associated with a composite Z score for systemic but not vascular inflammation (β=0.250, P<0.001, and β=0.276, P<0.001, for whites and African Americans, respectively)., Conclusions: We report an increase in the systemic but not vascular inflammatory burden with age. Levels of both categories of inflammatory markers with age were similar across ethnicity after adjustment for confounders. Our results underscore the importance of age in evaluating inflammatory markers to assess cardiovascular risk.

Lipoprotein (a), [Lp(a)] has many properties in common with low-density lipoprotein, (LDL) but contains a unique protein apolipoprotein(a), linked to apolipoprotein B-100 by a single disulfide bond. There is a substantial size heterogeneity of apo(a), and generally smaller apo(a) sizes tend to correspond to higher plasma Lp(a) levels, but this relation is far from linear, underscoring the importance to assess allele-specific apo(a) levels. The presence of apo(a), a highly charged, carbohydrate-rich, hydrophilic protein may obscure key features of the LDL moiety and offer opportunities for binding to vessel wall elements. Recently, interest in Lp(a) has increased because studies over the past decade have confirmed and more robustly demonstrated a risk factor role of Lp(a) for cardiovascular disease. In particular, levels of Lp(a) carried in particles with smaller size apo(a) isoforms are associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). Other studies suggest that proinflammatory conditions may modulate risk factor properties of Lp(a). Further, Lp(a) may act as a preferential acceptor for proinflammatory oxidized phospholipids transferred from tissues or from other lipoproteins. However, at present only a limited number of agents (e.g., nicotinic acid and estrogen) has proven efficacy in lowering Lp(a) levels. Although Lp(a) has not been definitely established as a cardiovascular risk factor and no guidelines presently recommend intervention, Lp(a)-lowering therapy might offer benefits in subgroups of patients with high Lp(a) levels., (© 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

In the present study, we determined the levels of cytokines produced by camel (Camelus bactrianus) peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) in response to live attenuated Brucella abortus (B. abortus) S19 vaccine. Seven camels were vaccinated with commercial B. abortus S19 vaccine, and their cytokine responses were determined using a real-time PCR assay. Cytokine responses to B. abortus S19 were examined at 6 hr, 48 hr and 1, 2 and 3 weeks post-vaccination. Serological tests were performed to further confirm these immune responses. The results revealed that IFN-gamma and IL-6 were upregulated during the first week post-vaccination. Low level expressions of IL-1alpha, IL-1beta, TNFalpha and IL-10 and no expression of IL-2 and IL-4 were observed compared with the control camels. The findings showed that B. abortus stimulates cell-mediated immunity by directly activating camel Th1 cells to secrete IFN-gamma. This quantification of cytokine expression in camels is essential for understanding of Camelidae disease development and protective immune responses. This is the first report of in vivo camel cytokine quantification after vaccination.

The complementary DNAs of the Th1 (IL-2, IL-12p35, and IFN-gamma) and Th2 (IL-4, IL-10 and IL-13) cytokine genes of the bactrian camel (Camelus bactrianus) were cloned, sequenced, and analyzed. IL-2, IL-4, IL-10, IL-12p35, IL-13, and IFN-gamma were found to have 465, 402, 537, 669, 411, and 501 bp length open reading frames with 154, 133, 178, 222, 136, and 166 amino acid encodings, respectively. The homology ranged from 58.8% to 100% between the nucleotide sequences of the camel cytokine genes and the published sequences of other mammalian genes, including the llama, pig, cow, horse, human, and mouse. The cDNA had highest homology with orders Artiodactyla (pigs and cattle) and Perissodactyla (horses), especially to the recently cloned llama sequences.

The effects of dietary consumption of mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves and their major flavonol glycoside, quercetin 3-(6-malonylglucoside) (Q3MG), on the development of atherosclerotic lesions, in relation to the susceptibility of plasma LDL to oxidative modification, was studied in LDL receptor-deficient (LDLR-/-) mice. Male mice aged 8 wk were randomly assigned to 4 groups (control, quercetin, Q3MG, and mulberry). The control group was fed an atherogenic-diet containing 3 g cholesterol and 15 g cocoa butter/100 g. The other experimental groups were fed the same atherogenic diet supplemented with 0.05 g quercetin/100 g for the quercetin group, 0.05 g Q3MG/100 g for the Q3MG group, and 3 g dried mulberry-leaf powder/100 g for the mulberry group. The mice were fed their respective diets for 8 wk. The susceptibility of LDL to oxidative modification was significantly decreased in the Q3MG- and mulberry-treated mice, as evidenced by the 44.3 and 42.2% prolongation of the lag phase for conjugated diene formation compared with that of the control mice. The atherosclerotic lesion area in both the Q3MG- and mulberry-treated mice was significantly reduced by 52% compared with that of the controls. However, in the quercetin group, no protective effects were observed against LDL oxidation or atherosclerotic lesion formation. In conclusion, mulberry leaves attenuated the atherosclerotic lesion development in LDLR-/- mice through enhancement of LDL resistance to oxidative modification, and these antioxidative and antiatherogenic protective effects were attributed mainly to Q3MG, the quantitatively major flavonol glycoside in mulberry leaves.

A clustering of insulin resistance, hypertension and dyslipidemia has been labeled as the metabolic syndrome. Asians have a lower frequency of obesity than do Caucasians, but have an increasing tendency toward metabolic syndrome. Most data on metabolic syndrome are based on studies from Western countries with only limited information derived from Asian populations. We conducted a cross-sectional study of individuals aged 30-60 yr in workplace settings. We examined and analyzed the health data of 1,384 Japanese, Koreans and Mongolians for metabolic syndrome based on the modified definitions of the working definition proposed by the Third Report of the National Cholesterol Educational Program Expert Panel on Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Cholesterol in Adults (ATP III definition). The prevalence of metabolic syndrome using the ATP III-BMI30 and ATP III-BMI25 definitions was 7% and 12% for Japanese, 7% and 13% for Koreans, and 12% and 16% for Mongolians, respectively. With the exception of obesity, the prevalences of individual metabolic abnormalities within each of the three Asian groups were similar to each other and to reported rates of prevalence in the U.S.A. Nevertheless, the values of sensitivity and specificity by the metabolic syndrome definitions are remarkably different relative to ethnicity. A universal metabolic syndrome definition is inappropriate for comparisons of metabolic syndrome among Asian ethnic groups. We believe that the ATP III-BMI25 definition is suitable for the determination of metabolic syndrome among Japanese and Koreans, and that the ATP III-BMI30 is more appropriate for Mongolians.

Accumulated evidence suggests that hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is independently associated with an increased incidence of cardiovascular disease. The hypotriglyceridemic effects of n-3 PUFAs have been confirmed in Caucasians, but the effect in Asians is less clear. Recent evidence indicates that stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) activity induced with high-carbohydrate diets increases plasma triglyceride levels. We investigated the relationship between triglyceride levels and the ratio of plasma oleic acid to stearic acid (the 18:1/18:0 ratio), a plasma marker of SCD activity, and n-3 PUFAs in 411 Japanese, 418 Korean, and 251 Mongolian adults. The Japanese and Koreans had higher values for triglyceride than their Mongolian counterparts, despite lower body mass index values for the Japanese and Koreans. The Japanese and Koreans ate fish more frequently and had remarkably higher values for n-3 PUFAs than did the Mongolians. Multiple regression analysis showed that triglyceride levels had a great magnitude of correlation with the increases in 18:1/18:0 ratio for the Japanese and Mongolians, and n-3 PUFAs remained significant for the Mongolians. HTG is ethnicity-specifically associated with an increase in the 18:1/18:0 ratio and a decrease in n-3 PUFA in plasma for Japanese, Koreans, and Mongolians.

Obesity occurs less frequently in Japanese than in various other ethnic populations. A person with abnormal glucose tolerance is often found to have one or more of the other cardiovascular disease risk factors, such as obesity, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. This clustering has been labeled as metabolic syndrome (WHO, 1998). It was suggested that Japanese, categorized as having normal weight (BMI of less than 25.0), as defined by the WHO (2000), have an increasing tendency toward metabolic syndrome. Our objective was to analyze metabolic syndrome in "Overweight" with BMI of 23.0-24.9 in Japanese workers, and to assess the suitability for Asians of the Regional Office for the Western Pacific Region of WHO criteria pertaining to obesity (WPRO criteria, 2000). We conducted a cross-sectional study in the workplace setting and investigated the relationship between BMI classification based on WPRO criteria and metabolic syndrome by gender and age group (18-44 yr vs. 45-60 yr). Three hundred seventy-nine men and 432 women Japanese workers participated in this study. BMI were categorized as 20% "Overweight" (23.0-24.9 BMI), 20% "Obese I" (25.0-29.9 BMI) and 2% "Obese II" (over 30.0 BMI), based on WPRO criteria. Graded increases in BMI were positively associated with body fat percentage, waist circumference, hip circumference and waist/hip ratio in both genders and age groups. A progressively increasing BMI category in the elder group aged 45-60 yr in both genders was positively related with parameters constituting metabolic syndrome. Graded increases in BMI classes in elder workers based on WPRO criteria were positively associated with prevalence of metabolic syndrome, and "Overweight" elder women had significantly higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome. The present investigation, based on the increasing risks of "Overweight" with a BMI of 23.0-24.9, suggests that WPRO criteria are suitable for Japanese workers aged over 45 yr.

To characterize amino acid polymorphisms in sheep prion protein (PrP), we analyzed the PrP genes from 271 sheep of 4 breeds (Khalkh, Yeroo, Orkhon and Khangai) raised in central Mongolia (Tuv, Uvurkhangai and Selenge prefectures). A total of 16 genotypes and 8 allelic variants of the PrP gene at codons 112, 136, 154 and 171 were found. At codon 171, 1.8% of the sheep had arginine/arginine (R/R) (resistant to scrapie) and 66.8% had glutamine/glutamine (Q/Q) (susceptible to scrapie). Several Yeroo and Orkhon sheep raised in Selenge prefecture had valine at codon 136 (136V) (highly susceptible to scrapie). Several Yeroo, Orkhon and Khangai sheep raised in Selenge prefecture had histidine at codon 154 (154H). Novel polymorphisms of valine (V) and serine (S) at codon 127, lysine (K) at codon 171, and leucine (L) and arginine (R) at codon 189 were also found in Khalkh, Yeroo and Orkhon sheep. It is not known whether these novel polymorphisms affect scrapie susceptibility.

Babesia equi (EMA-1) and Babesia caballi (BC48) gene fragments were amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in blood samples, and partially fed-females and egg and larval progenies of Dermacentor nuttalli, collected from horses in Altanbulag, Tuv Province, Mongolia. While Babesia parasite DNA was detected in some horse blood samples during the first PCR, all positive cases in partially fed-female ticks, eggs and larvae were confirmed by nested PCR. Present study reinforces earlier similar findings in unfed D. nuttalli ticks collected from an open space vegetation in Bayanonjuul, Tuv Province in Central Mongolia, pointing to the most likely important role of D. nuttalli in the transmission of equine babesiosis in Mongolia. The detection of parasite DNA in eggs and larval progenies is likewise suggestive of transovarial parasite transmission in this tick species.
