Introduction: Muscles play a critical role in supporting joints during activities of daily living, owing, in part, to the phenomenon of short-range stiffness. Briefly, when an active muscle is lengthened, bound cross-bridges are stretched, yielding forces greater than what is predicted from the force length relationship. For this reason, short-range stiffness has been proposed as an attractive mechanism for providing joint stability. However, there has yet to be a forward dynamic simulation employing a cross-bridge model, that demonstrates this stabilizing role. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to test whether Huxley-type muscle elements, which exhibit short-range stiffness, can stabilize a joint while at constant activation., Methods: We analyzed the stability of an inverted pendulum (moment of inertia: 2.7 kg m2) supported by Huxley-type muscle models that reproduce the short-range stiffness phenomenon. We calculated the muscle forces that would provide sufficient short-range stiffness to stabilize the system based in minimizing the potential energy. Simulations consisted of a 50 ms long, 5 Nm square-wave perturbation, with numerical simulations carried out in ArtiSynth., Results: Despite the initial analysis predicting shared activity of antagonist and agonist muscles to maintain stable equilibrium, the inverted pendulum model was not stable, and did not maintain an upright posture even with fully activated muscles., Discussion & Conclusion: Our simulations suggested that short-range stiffness cannot be solely responsible for joint stability, even for modest perturbations. We argue that short-range stiffness cannot achieve stability because its dynamics do not behave like a typical spring. Instead, an alternative conceptual model for short-range stiffness is that of a Maxwell element (spring and damper in series), which can be obtained as a first-order approximation to the Huxley model. We postulate that the damping that results from short-range stiffness slows down the mechanical response and allows the central nervous system time to react and stabilize the joint. We speculate that other mechanisms, like reflexes or residual force enhancement/depression, may also play a role in joint stability. Introduction: Sitting on an unstable surface is a common paradigm to investigate trunk postural control among individuals with low back pain (LBP), by minimizing the influence lower extremities on balance control. Outcomes of many small studies are inconsistent (e.g., some find differences between groups while others do not), potentially due to confounding factors such as age, sex, body mass index [BMI], or clinical presentations. We conducted a systematic review with an individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis to investigate whether trunk postural control differs between those with and without LBP, and whether the difference between groups is impacted by vision and potential confounding factors., Methods: We completed this review according to PRISMA-IPD guidelines. The literature was screened (up to 7th September 2023) from five electronic databases: MEDLINE, CINAHL, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science Core Collection. Outcome measures were extracted that describe unstable seat movements, specifically centre of pressure or seat angle. Our main analyses included: 1) a two-stage IPD meta-analysis to assess the difference between groups and their interaction with age, sex, BMI, and vision on trunk postural control; 2) and a two-stage IPD meta-regression to determine the effects of LBP clinical features (pain intensity, disability, pain catastrophizing, and fear-avoidance beliefs) on trunk postural control., Results: Forty studies (1,821 participants) were included for the descriptive analysis and 24 studies (1,050 participants) were included for the IPD analysis. IPD meta-analyses revealed three main findings: (a) trunk postural control was worse (higher root mean square displacement [RMSdispl], range, and long-term diffusion; lower mean power frequency) among individuals with than without LBP; (b) trunk postural control deteriorated more (higher RMSdispl, short- and long-term diffusion) among individuals with than without LBP when vision was removed; and (c) older age and higher BMI had greater adverse impacts on trunk postural control (higher short-term diffusion; longer time and distance coordinates of the critical point) among individuals with than without LBP. IPD meta-regressions indicated no associations between the limited LBP clinical features that could be considered and trunk postural control., Conclusion: Trunk postural control appears to be inferior among individuals with LBP, which was indicated by increased seat movements and some evidence of trunk stiffening. Degenerative spinal disorders, including kyphotic deformity, are associated with a range of degenerative characteristics of the paraspinal musculature. It has therefore been hypothesized that paraspinal muscular dysfunction is a causative factor for degenerative spinal deformity; however, experimental studies demonstrating causative relationships are lacking. Male and female mice received either glycerol or saline injections bilaterally along the length of the paraspinal muscles at four timepoints, each separated by 2 weeks. Immediately after sacrifice, micro-CT was performed to measure spinal deformity; paraspinal muscle biopsies were taken to measure active, passive and structural properties; and lumbar spines were fixed for analysis of intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration. Glycerol-injected mice demonstrated clear signs of paraspinal muscle degeneration and dysfunction: significantly (p < 0.01) greater collagen content, lower density, lower absolute active force, greater passive stiffness compared to saline-injected mice. Further, glycerol-injected mice exhibited spinal deformity: significantly (p < 0.01) greater kyphotic angle than saline-injected mice. Glycerol-injected mice also demonstrated a significantly (p < 0.01) greater IVD degenerative score (although mild) at the upper-most lumbar level compared to saline-injected mice. These findings provide direct evidence that combined morphological (fibrosis) and functional (actively weaker and passively stiffer) alterations to the paraspinal muscles can lead to negative changes and deformity within the thoracolumbar spine., (© 2023. Lifting with a flexed spine, especially near the end range of motion, has been identified as a potential risk factor for low back injury/pain. Therefore, individuals who develop discomfort from repetitive, prolonged and/or loaded flexed or slouched postures may benefit from a greater awareness of how to control and/or modify their spinal posture to avoid irritating their backs in these situations. This study was therefore designed to test the ability of spine-oriented verbal instructions to reduce intersegmental spine flexion during three lifting tasks. The lifts were first performed without any instructions on lifting technique. An audio recording was then played with instructions to limit bending in the lower back before repeating the lifts. Following the verbal instructions, maximum spine flexion angles significantly (p < 0.05) decreased at intersegmental levels in the lower thoracic and upper lumbar (T8/T9 to L2/L3) regions, but no significant changes were observed at the lower lumbar levels (L3/L4 to L5/S1). Thus, it is concluded that spine-oriented verbal instructions can decrease spine flexion during lifting; however, other cues/instructions may be required to target lower lumbar levels which have been identified as the most prone to injury/pain., (© 2022 Nevinn W. Increased serial sarcomere number (SSN) has been observed in rats following downhill running training due to the emphasis on active lengthening contractions; however, little is known about the influence on dynamic contractile function. Therefore, we employed 4 weeks of weighted downhill running training in rats, then assessed soleus SSN and work loop performance. We hypothesised trained rats would produce greater net work output during work loops due to a greater SSN. Thirty-one Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to a training or sedentary control group. Weight was added during downhill running via a custom-made vest, progressing from 5-15% body mass. Following sacrifice, the soleus was dissected, and a force-length relationship was constructed. Work loops (cyclic muscle length changes) were then performed about optimal muscle length (LO) at 1.5-3-Hz cycle frequencies and 1-7-mm length changes. Muscles were then fixed in formalin at LO. Fascicle lengths and sarcomere lengths were measured to calculate SSN. Intramuscular collagen content and crosslinking were quantified via a hydroxyproline content and pepsin-solubility assay. Trained rats had longer fascicle lengths (+13%), greater SSN (+8%), and a less steep passive force-length curve than controls (P<0.05). There were no differences in collagen parameters (P>0.05). Net work output was greater (+78-209%) in trained than control rats for the 1.5-Hz work loops at 1 and 3-mm length changes (P<0.05), however, net work output was more related to maximum specific force (R2=0.17-0.48, P<0.05) than SSN (R2=0.03-0.07, P=0.17-0.86). Therefore, contrary to our hypothesis, training-induced sarcomerogenesis likely contributed little to the improvements in work loop performance. Paraspinal muscles are vital to the functioning of the spine. Changes in muscle physiological cross-sectional area significantly affect spinal loading, but the importance of other muscle biomechanical properties remains unclear. This study explored the changes in spinal loading due to variation in five muscle biomechanical properties: passive stiffness, slack sarcomere length (SSL), in situ sarcomere length, specific tension, and pennation angle. An enhanced version of a musculoskeletal simulation model of the thoracolumbar spine with 210 muscle fascicles was used for this study and its predictions were validated for several tasks and multiple postures. Ranges of physiologically realistic values were selected for all five muscle parameters and their influence on L4-L5 intradiscal pressure (IDP) was investigated in standing and 36° flexion. We observed large changes in IDP due to changes in passive stiffness, SSL, in situ sarcomere length, and specific tension, often with interesting interplays between the parameters. For example, for upright standing, a change in stiffness value from one tenth to 10 times the baseline value increased the IDP only by 91% for the baseline model but by 945% when SSL was 0.4 μm shorter. Shorter SSL values and higher stiffnesses led to the largest increases in IDP. More changes were evident in flexion, as sarcomere lengths were longer in that posture and thus the passive curve is more influential. Understanding the processing of tactile information is crucial for the development of biofeedback interventions that target cutaneous mechanoreceptors. Mechanics of the skin have been shown to influence cutaneous tactile sensitivity. It has been established that foot skin mechanics are altered due to foot posture, but whether these changes affect cutaneous sensitivity are unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential effect of posture-mediated skin deformation about the ankle joint on perceptual measures of foot skin sensitivity. Participants ( N = 20) underwent perceptual skin sensitivity testing on either the foot sole ( N = 10) or dorsum ( N = 10) with the foot positioned in maximal dorsiflexion/toe extension, maximal plantarflexion/toe flexion, and a neutral foot posture. Perceptual tests included touch sensitivity, stretch sensitivity, and spatial acuity. Regional differences in touch sensitivity were found across the foot sole ( p < 0.001) and dorsum ( p < 0.001). Touch sensitivity also significantly increased in postures where the skin was compressed ( p = 0.001). Regional differences in spatial acuity were found on the foot sole ( p = 0.002) but not dorsum ( p = 0.666). Spatial acuity was not significantly altered by posture across the foot sole and dorsum, other than an increase in sensitivity at the medial arch in the dorsiflexion posture ( p = 0.006). Posture*site interactions were found for stretch sensitivity on the foot sole and dorsum in both the transverse and longitudinal directions ( p < 0.005). Stretch sensitivity increased in postures where the skin was pre-stretched on both the foot sole and dorsum. Changes in sensitivity across locations and postures were believed to occur due to concurrent changes in skin mechanics, such as skin hardness and thickness, which follows our previous findings. Background: Few studies have quantified dynamic balance in fencers despite previous suggestions that balance training may be beneficial for these athletes. Generally, asymmetry in dynamic balance performance between the left and right legs can be an indicator of lower extremity injury risk and used to monitor rehabilitation progress. Fencing is recognized as an asymmetric sport, therefore, differences in dynamic balance may exist among uninjured athletes., Hypothesis/purpose: The primary objective of this investigation was to evaluate whether asymmetry of dynamic balance is present in uninjured national-level fencers. It was hypothesized that elite uninjured fencers would demonstrate superior dynamic balance on the lead-leg of their fencing stance. A secondary objective was to compare dynamic balance performance of elite fencers to previously published data from high-level athletes participating in other sports., Study Design: Descriptive Laboratory Study., Methods: Fourteen uninjured elite competitive fencers were recruited. Subjects self-reported the lead leg of their fencing stance. Each participant performed the Y-Balance test (YBT), which represented a measurement of dynamic balance control, on both legs. Reach distances were recorded directly from a commercially available YBT apparatus. Four reach distances were recorded: anterior, posteromedial, posterolateral, and a composite measure was calculated. Distances were leg length-normalized and expressed as a percentage. Sample averages and standard deviations were derived for the four YBT measurements., Results: There were no significant differences in reaching distance between the lead and trail legs in any of the four YBT measures (p ≥ 0.65). Fencers appeared to demonstrate larger normalized reach distances in the posterolateral and posteromedial directions than other athletes., Conclusions: The results of this study indicate that dynamic balance is not significantly different between the lead and trail legs in elite fencers, despite the asymmetrical nature of their sport. The apparent symmetry of dynamic balance control in uninjured fencers means that the YBT could be used in this population for monitoring progress during training and rehabilitation., Level of Evidence: 2b., Competing Interests: None to declare.

This study investigated feasibility of imaging lumbopelvic musculature and geometry in tandem using upright magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in asymptomatic adults, and explored the effect of pelvic retroversion on lumbopelvic musculature and geometry. Six asymptomatic volunteers were imaged (0.5 T upright MRI) in 4 postures: standing, standing pelvic retroversion, standing 30° flexion, and supine. Measures included muscle morphometry [cross-sectional area (CSA), circularity, radius, and angle] of the gluteus and iliopsoas, and pelvic geometry [pelvic tilt (PT), pelvic incidence (PI), sacral slope (SS), L3-S1 lumbar lordosis (LL)] L3-coccyx. With four volunteers repeating postures, and three raters assessing repeatability, there was generally good repeatability [ICC(3,1) 0.80-0.97]. Retroversion had level dependent effects on muscle measures, for example gluteus CSA and circularity increased (up to 22%). Retroversion increased PT, decreased SS, and decreased L3-S1 LL, but did not affect PI. Gluteus CSA and circularity also had level-specific correlations with PT, SS, and L3-S1 LL. Overall, upright MRI of the lumbopelvic musculature is feasible with good reproducibility, and the morphometry of the involved muscles significantly changes with posture. The passive elastic modulus of muscle fiber appears to be size-dependent. The objectives of this study were to determine whether this size effect was evident in the mechanical testing of muscle fiber bundles and to examine whether the muscle fiber bundle cross-section is circular. Muscle fibers and fiber bundles were extracted from lumbar spine multifidus and longissimus of three cohorts: group one (G1) and two (G2) included 13 (330 ± 14 g) and 6 (452 ± 28 g) rats, while Group 3 (G3) comprised 9 degenerative spine patients. A minimum of six muscle fibers and six muscle fiber bundles from each muscle underwent cumulative stretches, each of 10% strain followed by 4 minutes relaxation. For all specimens, top and side diameters were measured. Elastic modulus was calculated as tangent at 30% strain from the stress-strain curve. Linear correlations between the sample cross sectional area (CSA) and elastic moduli in each group were performed. The correlations showed that increasing specimen CSA resulted in lower elastic modulus for both rats and humans, muscle fibers and fiber bundles. The median ratio of major to minor axis exceeded 1.0 for all groups, ranging between 1.15-1.29 for fibers and 1.27-1.44 for bundles. The lower elastic moduli with increasing size can be explained by relatively less collagenous extracellular matrix in the large fiber bundles. Low back pain disorders affect more than 80% of adults in their lifetime and are the leading cause of global disability. The muscles attaching to the spine (ie, paraspinal muscles) are critical for proper spine health and play a crucial role in the functioning of the spine and whole body; however, reports of muscle dysfunction and insufficiency in chronic LBP (CLBP) patients are common. This article presents a review of the current understanding of the relationship between paraspinal muscle pathophysiology and spine-related disorders. Human literature demonstrates a clear association between altered muscle structure/function, most notably fatty infiltration and fibrosis, and low back pain disorders; other associations, including muscle cell atrophy and fiber type changes, are less clear. Animal literature then provides some mechanistic insight into the complex relationships, including initiating factors and time courses, between the spine and spine muscles under pathological conditions. It is apparent that spine pathology can directly lead to changes in the paraspinal muscle structure, function, and biology. It also appears that changes to the muscle structure and function can directly lead to changes in the spine (eg, deformity); however, this relationship is less well studied. Future work must focus on providing insight into possible mechanisms that regulate spine and paraspinal muscle health, as well as probing how muscle degeneration/dysfunction might be an initiating factor in the progression of spine pathology., (© 2021 The Authors. Objective: Spinal-muscle morphological differences between weight-bearing and supine postures have potential diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic applications. While the focus to date has been on cervical and lumbar regions, recent findings have associated spinal deformity with smaller paraspinal musculature in the thoracic region. We aim to quantitatively investigate the morphology of trapezius (TZ), erector spinae (ES) and transversospinalis (TS) muscles in upright postures with open upright MRI and also determine the effect of level and posture on the morphological measures., Methods: Six healthy volunteers (age 26 ± 6 years) were imaged (0.5 T MROpen, Paramed, Genoa, Italy) in four postures (supine, standing, standing with 30° flexion, and sitting). Two regions of the thorax, middle (T4-T5), and lower (T8-T9), were scanned separately for each posture. 2D muscle parameters such as cross-sectional area (CSA) and position (radius and angle) with respect to the vertebral body centroid were measured for the three muscles. Effect of spinal level and posture on muscle parameters was examined using 2-way repeated measures ANOVA separately for T4-T5 and T8-T9 regions., Results: The TZ CSA was smaller (40%, P = .0027) at T9 than at T8. The ES CSA was larger at T5 than at T4 (12%, P = .0048) and at T9 than at T8 (10%, P = .0018). TS CSA showed opposite trends at the two spinal regions with it being smaller (16%, P = .0047) at T5 than at T4 and larger (11%, P = .0009) at T9 than at T8. At T4-T5, the TZ CSA increased (up to 23%), and the ES and TS CSA decreased (up to 10%) in upright postures compared to supine., Conclusion: Geometrical parameters that describe muscle morphology in the thorax change with level and posture. The increase in TZ CSA in upright postures could result from greater activation while upright. Following active muscle shortening, steady-state isometric force is less than a purely isometric contraction at the same muscle length and level of activation; this is known as residual force depression (rFD). It is unknown whether rFD at the single muscle fiber level can be modified via training. Here we investigated whether rFD in single muscle fibers is modifiable through downhill and uphill running in the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) and soleus (SOL) muscles in rats. Rats were run uphill or downhill 5 days/week for 4 weeks. After muscles were dissected and chemically permeabilized, single fibers were tied between a length controller and force transducer, transferred to an activating solution, with ATP and pCa of 4.2 for mechanical testing. rFD was quantified after active fiber shortening from an average sarcomere length (SL) of 3.1-2.5 µm at a relative speed of 0.15 fiber lengths/s (slow) and 0.6 fiber lengths/s (fast). rFD was calculated as the difference in force (normalized to cross-sectional area) during the isometric steady-state phase following active shortening and the purely isometric contraction. In addition to rFD, mechanical work of shortening and stiffness depression were also calculated. rFD was present for both the EDL (6-15%) and SOL (1-2%) muscles, with no effect of training. rFD was greater for the EDL than SOL which closely corresponded to the greater stiffness depression in the EDL, indicating a greater inhibition of cross-bridge attachments. The increase or decrease in isometric force following active muscle lengthening or shortening, relative to a reference isometric contraction at the same muscle length and level of activation, are referred to as residual force enhancement (rFE) and residual force depression (rFD), respectively. The purpose of these experiments was to investigate the trainability of rFE and rFD on the basis of serial sarcomere number (SSN) alterations to history-dependent force properties. Maximal rFE/rFD measures from the soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) of rats were compared after 4 weeks of uphill or downhill running with a no-running control. SSN adapted to the training: soleus SSN was greater with downhill compared with uphill running, while EDL demonstrated a trend towards more SSN for downhill compared with no running. In contrast, rFE and rFD did not differ across training groups for either muscle. Introduction: The passive mechanical behavior of skeletal muscle represents both important and generally underappreciated biomechanical properties with little attention paid to their trainability. These experiments were designed to gain insight into the trainability of muscle passive mechanical properties in both single fibers and fiber bundles. Methods: Rats were trained in two groups: 4 weeks of either uphill (UH) or downhill (DH) treadmill running; with a third group as sedentary control. After sacrifice, the soleus (SOL), extensor digitorum longus (EDL), and vastus intermedius (VI) were harvested. One hundred seventy-nine bundles and 185 fibers were tested and analyzed using a cumulative stretch-relaxation protocol to determine the passive stress and elastic modulus. Titin isoform expression was analyzed using sodium dodecyl sulfate vertical agarose gel electrophoresis (SDS-VAGE). Results: Single fibers: passive modulus and stress were greater for the EDL at sarcomere lengths (SLs) ≥ 3.7 μm (modulus) and 4.0 μm (stress) with DH training compared to UH training and lesser for the SOL (SLs ≥ 3.3 μm) with DH training compared with control; there was no effect of UH training. Vastus intermedius was not affected by either training protocol. Fiber bundles: passive modulus and stress were greater for the EDL at SLs ≥ 2.5 μm (modulus) and 3.3 μm (stress) in the DH training group as compared with control, while no affects were observed in either the SOL or VI for either training group. No effects on titin isoform size were detected with training. Objective: MRI derived spinal-muscle morphology measurements have potential diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic applications in spinal health. Muscle morphology in the thoracic spine is an important determinant of kyphosis severity in older adults. However, the literature on quantification of spinal muscles to date has been limited to cervical and lumbar regions. Hence, we aim to propose a method to quantitatively identify regions of interest of thoracic spinal muscle in axial MR images and investigate the repeatability of their measurements., Methods: Middle (T4-T5) and lower (T8-T9) thoracic levels of six healthy volunteers (age 26 ± 6 years) were imaged in an upright open scanner (0.5T MROpen, Paramed, Genoa, Italy). A descriptive methodology for defining the regions of interest of trapezius, erector spinae, and transversospinalis in axial MR images was developed. The guidelines for segmentation are laid out based on the points of origin and insertion, probable size, shape, and the position of the muscle groups relative to other recognizable anatomical landmarks as seen from typical axial MR images. 2D parameters such as muscle cross-sectional area (CSA) and muscle position (radius and angle) with respect to the vertebral body centroid were computed and 3D muscle geometries were generated. Intra and inter-rater segmentation repeatability was assessed with intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC (3,1)) for 2D parameters and with dice coefficient (DC) for 3D parameters., Results: Intra and inter-rater repeatability for 2D and 3D parameters for all muscles was generally good/excellent (average ICC (3,1) = 0.9 with ranges of 0.56-0.98; average DC = 0.92 with ranges from 0.85-0.95)., Conclusion: The guidelines proposed are important for reliable MRI-based measurements and allow meaningful comparisons of muscle morphometry in the thoracic spine across different studies globally. Objective: The present study aimed to investigate whether experimentally induced lumbar facet-joint OA lead to degenerative changes and enhanced SP expression within the ipsilateral neurosegmentally linked tibiofemoral cartilage., Methods: Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to left side L5-L6 facet mechanical compression injury (surgery) ( n = 6), L5-L6 facet exposure with no compression (sham) ( n = 5), or naïve (no surgery) ( n = 4) groups. The morphology of the tibiofemoral articular cartilage was assessed using a modified Mankin scoring system. Immunohistochemistry was used to examine the density of chondrocytes stained positive for SP (cells/cm 2 ) in the ipsilateral tibiofemoral cartilage at 28 days postintervention., Results: Tibiofemoral cartilage in the surgery group showed consistent loss of superficial zone chondrocytes, mild roughening of the articular surface and occasional chondrocyte clusters as well as a greater density of SP mainly in the superficial cartilage zone compared with sham and naïve groups, although they also had a basic SP-expression., Conclusion: Our results support the hypothesis that neurogenic mechanisms may mediate the spread of SP to neurosegmentally linked heterologous joints affecting the distal cartilage homeostasis. These findings contribute additional insight into the potential role of neurogenic inflammation with implications in the pathophysiology of chronic inflammatory joint disease and OA.

Using a technique of tracking intersegmental spine kinematics via skin surface markers, this study aimed to estimate local dynamic spine stability across smaller sub-regions (or segments) of the lumbar spine while also considering the impact of an external pelvic constraint during repetitive movements. Sixteen participants (10 males) performed two trials [Free Motion (FM), Pelvis Constrained (PC)] each consisting of 65 repetitive trunk flexion-extension movements to assess dynamic spine stability using maximum Lyapunov exponents (LyE). First, results indicated that LyE obtained from analysis of 30 repetitive flexion-extension movements did not differ from those obtained from analysis of greater numbers of repetitive movements, which aligns with results from a previous study for the whole lumbar spine. Next, for both males and females, and FM and PC trials, the most caudal region of the lumbar spine behaved the most dynamically stable, while upper lumbar regions behaved the most dynamically unstable. Finally, females demonstrated greater lumbar and intersegmental stability (lower LyE) during PC trials compared to FM, while males demonstrated slightly decreased lumbar and intersegmental stability (higher LyE) during PC trials compared to FM; this resulted in PC trials, but not FM trials, being different between sexes. Altogether, these data show that dynamic stability of lumbar spine sub-regions may be related to the proximity of the motion segment to rigid skeletal structures, and that consideration is needed when deciding whether to constrain the pelvis during analyses of dynamic spine stability., (Copyright © 2019 Larson, Wang, Zwambag and Brown.)

The purpose of this study was to determine if vibration, a potential method of pain management, applied to the low back could alleviate pain developed during prolonged standing. Eighteen healthy individuals participated in a 2.5-h standing task during which vibration (3-min duration) was applied at the 2-h and 2.25-h marks. During the full 2.5 h, participants recorded their perceived pain scores every 15 min using a 10 cm visual analogue scale (VAS). Following each vibration bout, those who developed low back pain (LPB) reported statistically lower VAS scores compared to prior to the vibration; however, when the vibration ceased, LBP returned to pre-vibration levels. It appears that vibration may be an effective method of alleviating LBP caused by prolonged standing; however, the effects seem to be temporary.
