The negative impact of adverse experiences in childhood on neurodevelopment is well documented. Less attention however has been given to the impact of variations in "normative" parenting behaviors. The influence of these parenting behaviors is likely to be marked during periods of rapid brain reorganization, such as late childhood. The aim of the current study was to investigate associations between normative parenting behaviors and the development of structural brain networks across late childhood. Data were collected from a longitudinal sample of 114 mother-child dyads (54% female children, M age 8.41 years, SD = 0.32 years), recruited from low socioeconomic areas of Melbourne, Australia. At the first assessment parenting behaviors were coded from two lab-based interaction tasks and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans of the children were performed. At the second assessment, approximately 18 months later (M age 9.97 years, SD = 0.37 years) MRI scans were repeated. Cortical thickness (CT) was extracted from T1-weighted images using FreeSurfer. Structural covariance (SC) networks were constructed from partial correlations of CT estimates between brain regions and estimates of network efficiency and modularity were obtained for each time point. The change in these network measures, from Time 1 to Time 2, was also calculated. At Time 2, less positive maternal affective behavior was associated with higher modularity (more segregated networks), while negative maternal affective behavior was not related. No support was found for an association between local or global efficacy and maternal affective behaviors at Time 2. Similarly, no support was demonstrated for associations between maternal affective behaviors and change in network efficiency and modularity, from Time 1 to Time 2. To grasp a greater understanding and explore the various quantum technologies, it is imperative to efficiently fabricate a single crystalline material that can host bright point defects. Point defects or single photon sources are necessary to push the boundaries for quantum technologies, specifically, quantum telecommunications and quantum computing. This endeavor has led to several 1D, 2D and 3D platforms to be explored to test their applicability for the generation of pure single photon emitters (SPE). One of these platforms include diamond due to its wide bandgap and ability to host a variety of photostable, optically active group IV SPE defects at room temperature. Several diamond defects have been studied extensively, including the Nitrogen vacancy (NV), Silicon vacancy (SiV) and, recently, the Germanium vacancy (GeV) color centers and have all shown to be stable SPEs at room temperature. In addition to be an optically active single photon source, the defect additionally requires the ability to be electrically excited. Electrically pumping SPEs is highly desired for optoelectronic applications. These properties of diamond have led to several publications on the fabrication and characterization of optically and electrically excited 3D devices fabricated from diamond. This chapter delves into the fabrication of nanoscale, high aspect ratio conductive diamond membranes that can host group IV color centers. These structures demonstrate several key advantages which include scaling of emitter creation and ease of transfer between substrates.

© 2020 Author(s). The silicon-vacancy (SiV) color center in diamond has recently emerged as a promising qubit for quantum photonics. However, the electrical control and excitation of the SiV centers are challenging due to the low density of free carriers in doped diamond. Here, we realize electrical excitation of SiV centers in a single-crystal diamond membrane, which is promising for scalable photonic architectures. We further demonstrate electrical switching of the charge states of the SiV centers by applying a forward bias voltage to the fabricated diamond-membrane devices and identify the position of the SiV-/SiV0 charge transition level. Our findings provide a perspective toward electrical triggering of color centers in diamond and accelerate the development of scalable quantum nanophotonic technologies.

Diamond is a material of choice in the pursuit of integrated quantum photonic technologies. So far, the majority of photonic devices fabricated from diamond are made from (100)‐oriented crystals. In this work, we demonstrate a methodology for the fabrication of optically active membranes from (111)‐oriented diamond. We use a liftoff technique to generate membranes, followed by chemical vapor deposition of diamond in the presence of silicon to generate homogenous silicon vacancy color centers with emission properties that are superior to those in (100)‐oriented diamond. We further use the diamond membranes to fabricate microring resonators with quality factors exceeding ~ 3000. Supported by finite‐difference time‐domain calculations, we discuss the advantages of (111)‐oriented structures as building blocks for quantum nanophotonic devices.

We realize a potential platform for an efficient spin-photon interface, namely negatively-charged silicon-vacancy centers in a diamond membrane coupled to the mode of a fully-tunable, fiber-based, optical resonator. We demonstrate that introducing the thin (∼200nm), single crystal diamond membrane into the mode of the resonator does not change the cavity properties, which is one of the crucial points for an efficient spin-photon interface. In particular, we observe constantly high Finesse values of up to 3000 and a linear dispersion in the presence of the membrane. We observe cavity-coupled fluorescence from an ensemble of SiV- centers with an enhancement factor of ∼1.9. Furthermore from our investigations we extract the ensemble absorption and extrapolate an absorption cross section of (2.9±2)×10-12cm2 for a single SiV- center, much higher than previously reported.

Color centers in diamond have garnered significant attention for applications in integrated quantum photonics. The availability of thin (~ hundred of nanometers) diamond membranes is paramount to achieve this goal. In this paper, we describe in detail a robust, reproducible and cost effective fabrication method that enables engineering high quality thin diamond membranes with uniform distribution of germanium vacancies employing microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition. We use a combination of different germanium precursors for homogeneous doping of the membranes to increase the probability of germanium incorporation into the diamond lattice. Our fabrication methodology can be further extended to implementation of other color centers in thin diamond membranes and be used for engineering quantum photonic devices.

Copyright © 2018 American Chemical Society. Single crystal diamond membranes that host optically active emitters are highly attractive components for integrated quantum nanophotonics. In this work we demonstrate bottom-up synthesis of single crystal diamond membranes containing germanium vacancy (GeV) color centers. We employ a lift-off technique to generate the membranes and perform chemical vapor deposition in the presence of a germanium source to realize the in situ doping. Finally, we show that these membranes are suitable for engineering of photonic resonators such as microdisk cavities with quality factors of ∼1500. The robust and scalable approach to engineer single crystal diamond membranes containing emerging color centers is a promising pathway for the realization of diamond integrated quantum nanophotonic circuits on a chip.

We report on the sizable production of fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) containing a near infrared (NIR) color center-namely the silicon vacancy (SiV) defect, and their first demonstration inside cells for bio-imaging. We further demonstrate a concept of multi-color bio-imaging using FNDs to investigate intercellular processes using two types of FNDs. Due to their specific spectral properties, SiV FNDs can be distinguished from common nitrogen-vacancy (NV) FNDs and show a distinct initial spreading throughout the cell interior. The reported results are the first demonstration of multi-color labeling with FNDs that are especially interesting for in vivo bio-imaging due to their stable fluorescence.

The Families and Childhood Transitions Study (FACTS) is a multidisciplinary longitudinal cohort study of brain development and mental health, with two waves of data collection currently funded, occurring 18-months apart, when child participants are aged approximately 8- and 10-years old. Methods/design: Participants are 163 children (M age [SD] = 8.44 [0.34] years, 76 males) and their mothers (M age [SD] = 40.34 [5.43] years). Of the 163 families who consented to participate, 156 completed a video-recorded and observer-coded dyadic interaction task and 153 completed a child magnetic resonance imaging brain scan at baseline. Families were recruited from lower socioeconomic status (SES) areas to maximise rates of social disadvantage and variation in parenting behaviours. All experimental measures and tasks completed at baseline are repeated at an 18-month follow-up, excluding the observer coded family interaction tasks. The baseline assessment was completed in October 2015, and the 18-month follow up will be completed May 2017. Discussion: This study, by examining the neurobiological and mental health consequences of variations in parenting, has the potential to significantly advance our understanding of child development and risk processes. Recruitment of lower SES families will also allow assessment of resilience factors given the poorer outcomes often associated with this population.

Diamond nanoparticles that host bright luminescent centers are attracting attention for applications in bio-labeling and bio-sensing. Beyond their unsurpassed photostability, diamond can host multiple color centers, from the blue to the near infra-red spectral range. While nanodiamonds hosting nitrogen vacancy defects have been widely employed as bio-imaging probes, production and fabrication of nanodiamonds with other color centers is a challenge. In this work, a large scale production of fluorescent nanodiamonds (FNDs) containing a near infrared (NIR) color center – namely the silicon vacancy (SiV) defect, is reported. More importantly, a concept of application of different color centers for multi-color bio-imaging to investigate intercellular processes is demonstrated. Furthermore, two types of FNDs within cells can be easily resolved by their specific spectral properties, where data shows that SiV FNDs initially dispersed throughout the cell interior while NV FNDs localized in a close proximity to nucleus. The reported results are the first demonstration of multi-color labeling with FNDs that can pave the way for the wide-ranging use of FNDs in applications, including bio-sensing, bio-imaging and drug delivery applications.

© 2017 Author(s). Single-photon emitters with narrow linewidths are highly sought after for applications in quantum information processing and quantum communications. In this letter, we report on a bright, highly polarized near infrared single photon emitter embedded in diamond nanocrystals with a narrow, sub-GHz optical linewidth at 10 K. The observed zero-phonon line at ∼780 nm is optically stable under low power excitation and blue shifts as the excitation power increases. Our results highlight the prospect for using new near infrared color centers in nanodiamonds for quantum applications.

© 2016 American Physical Society. Bulk hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a highly nonlinear natural hyperbolic material that attracts major attention in modern nanophotonics applications. However, studies of its optical properties in the visible part of the spectrum and quantum emitters hosted by bulk hBN have not been reported to date. In this work, we study the emission properties of hBN crystals in the red spectral range using sub-band-gap optical excitation. Quantum emission from defects is observed at room temperature and characterized in detail. Our results advance the use of hBN in quantum nanophotonics technologies and enhance our fundamental understanding of its optical properties.

© 2016 American Chemical Society. Diamond nanocrystals that host room temperature narrowband single photon emitters are highly sought after for applications in nanophotonics and bioimaging. However, current understanding of the origin of these emitters is extremely limited. In this work, we demonstrate that the narrowband emitters are point defects localized at extended morphological defects in individual nanodiamonds. In particular, we show that nanocrystals with defects such as twin boundaries and secondary nucleation sites exhibit narrowband emission that is absent from pristine individual nanocrystals grown under the same conditions. Critically, we prove that the narrowband emission lines vanish when extended defects are removed deterministically using highly localized electron beam induced etching. Our results enhance the current understanding of single photon emitters in diamond and are directly relevant to fabrication of novel quantum optics devices and sensors.

© The Royal Society of Chemistry 2015. Fluorescent nanodiamonds are attracting major attention in the field of bio-sensing and bio-labeling. In this work we demonstrate a robust approach to achieve an encapsulation of individual nanodiamonds with phenol-ionic complexes that enhance the photoluminescence from single nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers. We show that single NV centres in the coated nanodiamonds also exhibit shorter lifetimes, opening another channel for high resolution sensing. We propose that the nanodiamond encapsulation reduces the non-radiative decay pathways of the NV color centers. Our results provide a versatile and assessable way to enhance photoluminescence from nanodiamond defects that can be used in a variety of sensing and imaging applications.

By modifying the surface energy of silver nanowires, the position and density of attached nanodiamonds can be maneuvered leading to silver nanowire/nanodiamond(s) hybrid nanostructures. These structures exhibit strong plasmonic coupling effects and thus hold promise to serve as quantum plasmonic components.

The aim of the research was to improve understanding of turbulent combustion in high speed flows. A presumed pdf reaction rate model was combined with conventional models of turbulent transport which were modified to include effects of dilatation dissipation at high Mach numbers. Model predictions were compared with published data from experiments in both low and high speed flows. Encouraging results were obtained, showing generally good agreement between predictions and experiment. Proposals were made for the continued development and testing of the model.

Laser tomography experiments have been performed on a turbulent unconfined premixed reacting flow. Useful statistics have been extracted from these tomography images via digital image processing technique. The results are compared and contrasted with the time resolved data to enhance the understanding of the reacting flow.
