1. Improving the Interest of High-School Students toward Chemistry by Crime Scene Investigation

Abstract

Improving the interest of high-school students towards chemistry (and science in general) is one of the goals of the Italian Ministry of Education. To this aim, we designed a context-based activity that actively involved students in six different laboratory experiences interconnected by a case study of the murder of Miss Scarlet, from the famous game Clue. Key points of the activity were: the interest aroused by the subject of crime scene investigation; the direct involvement of the students in all stages of the work (from the realization of the experiments to the resolution of the case); the use of a multidisciplinary approach for addressing a complex scientific problem; the work in chemical laboratories with modern instrumentation; the team work and the supervision by young tutors. To verify the hypothesis that such a multidisciplinary activity could foster the interest for the discipline, an evaluation was performed using a self-report questionnaire designed to assess changes in the situational interest raised by the internship. It was found that the activity significantly increased interest and attitude toward chemistry, mainly for students with lower scores in pleasure for the study of chemistry, self-efficacy and self-concept in chemistry

2. Implicit evidence on the dissociation of identity and emotion recognition

Abstract

Recognition of identity and of emotional facial expressions of individuals are both based on processing of the human face. While most studies show these abilities to be dissociated, some others find evidence of a connection. One possible explanation for these contradictory results comes from neurological evidence, which points to identity recognition being mostly based on holistic processing, while emotion recognition seems to be based on both an explicit, fine-grained process, and an implicit, mostly-holistic one. Our main hypothesis, that would explain the contradictory findings, is that holistic implicit emotion recognition, specifically, would be related to identity recognition, while explicit emotion recognition would be a process separate to identity recognition. To test this hypothesis, we employed an experimental paradigm in which spatial frequencies of visual stimuli are manipulated so that automatic, holistic-based, implicit emotion recognition influences perceived friendliness of unfamiliar faces. We predicted the effect to be related to identity recognition ability, since they both require holistic face processing. After a successful replication study, we employed the paradigm with 140 participants, measuring also identity recognition ability and explicit emotion recognition ability. Results showed that the effect is not moderated by these two variables (p =.807 and.373, respectively), suggesting that the independence of identity and emotion recognition holds even when considering, specifically, implicit emotion recognition.

Abstract

Invasive alien plants are a major threat to biodiversity and they contribute to the unfavourable conservation status of habitats of interest to the European Community. In order to favour implementation of European Union Regulation no. 1143/2014 on invasive alien species, the Italian Society of Vegetation Science carried out a large survey led by a task force of 49 contributors with expertise in vegetation across all the Italian administrative regions. The survey summed up the knowledge on impact mechanisms of invasive alien plants in Italy and their outcomes on plant communities and the EU habitats of Community Interest, in accordance with Directive no. 92/43/EEC. The survey covered 241 alien plant species reported as having deleterious ecological impacts. The data collected illustrate the current state of the art, highlight the main gaps in knowledge, and suggest topics to be further investigated. In particular, the survey underlined competition as being the main mechanism of ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats. Of the 241 species, only Ailanthus altissima was found to exert an ecological impact on plant communities and Natura 2000 habitats in all Italian regions; while a further 20 species impact up to ten out of the 20 Italian administrative regions. Our data indicate that 84 out of 132 Natura 2000 Habitats (64%) are subjected to some degree of impact by invasive alien plants. Freshwater habitats and natural and semi-natural grassland formations were impacted by the highest number of alien species, followed by coastal sand dunes and inland dunes, and forests. Although not exhaustive, this research is the first example of nationwide evaluation of the ecological impacts of invasive alien plants on plant communities and Natura 2000 Habitats.

Abstract

In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of vascular flora alien to Italy are presented. It includes new records, confirmations, exclusions, and status changes for Italy or for Italian administrative regions. Furthermore, three new combinations are proposed. Abstract

This study provides a first step toward the knowledge of the alien-dominated and co-dominated plant communities present in Italy. The first ever checklist of the alien phytocoenoses described or reported in literature for the Italian territory has been compiled, produced by data-mining in national and local thematic literature. The resulting vegetation-type draft-list has been checked in the light of the most recent syntaxonomic documentation and updated with regards to syntaxonomy and nomenclature, with special reference to the frame proposed in the Italian Vegetation Prodrome. The list includes 27 vascular and one bryophyte vegetation classes, hosting 194 low rank alien-dominated syntaxa . The different vegetation types detected for each syntaxonomic class and macro-vegetation group, defined by physiognomical and ecological attributes, are discussed.

Abstract

The 4th National Report ex Art. 17 of the 92/43/EEC Directive in Italy (period 2013-2018) will try to fill a number of gaps still affecting the former versions of the Italian Reports, where territorial data were still missing for large parts of the country and the assessment was mostly based on the use of the expert opinion. Similar inconsistencies also emerged in other European countries (State of nature in the EU, EEA 2015). In order to reach this aim, a nationally shared protocol for monitoring the vegetation-based Annex I Habitats is currently under development. The most prominent issues addressed by the ongoing project are: i) fixing standardized, updated and scientifically grounded methodological tools, on the basis of the European guidelines (Evans & Arvela 2011, ETC-BD); ii) providing comparable data at national and European level; iii) harmonizing the territorially fragmented knowledge and iv) supporting nationally standardized measures for the conservation of terrestrial, brackish and freshwater Habitats. Promoted by the Italian Ministry for Environment (MATTM) and coordinated by the environmental agency ISPRA, the development of such a tool is being carried out by the Italian Society for Vegetation Science, with the support of a large team of experts. Open issues, such as the favourable reference values and the optimal thresholds for each considered parameter (range,area, structure and function), have to be dealt with, in a condition of large uncertainty. Due to its centrality in the assessment process, especially the concept of "typical species" should be developed with care, trying to combine the need for synthetic indicators with the great floristic diversity of the Italian Habitats. A clear definition of the parameters is crucial for a correct application of the monitoring protocol, to successfully contribute to the whole process of halting biodiversity loss in Europe.

Abstract

The methodological foundations of the recently published Manual for Annex I Habitats monitoring in Italy, edited by the Italian Institute for Environmental Protection and Research (ISPRA) with the scientific support of the Italian Society for Vegetation Science (SISV), are here presented, discussed and related to the most consolidated and acknowledged scientific advances in the field of Vegetation science. The proposed methodologies aim at offering simple, yet effective, protocols and procedures towards a harmonized data collection, by way of standardized and shared technical tools, resulting in comparable evaluations of the conservation status of Annex I Habitats. The methodological framework was developed by experts including a large team of members of the SISV. Big efforts were deployed to provide indicators and parameters for biodiversity monitoring able to catch its complexity, yet simple enough to be easily measured. Diagnosis and syntaxonomical correspondences of Habitat types, sampling procedure, plot size, distribution mapping, typical species are among the principal issues here examined through a widely shared scientific discussion. The final product is a comprehensive Manual, which offers practical but scientifically sound methodological tools for an efficient and effective monitoring of Annex I Habitats. The importance of bridging across the science-policy interface is emphasized, in a general will to improve the impact of Vegetation science on conservation policy development in Europe.

Abstract

A partire dall’entrata in vigore della Direttiva 92/43/EEC, la sorveglianza dello stato di conservazione degli habitat elencati nell’Allegato I ed il relativo monitoraggio periodico a intervalli di sei anni sono diventati un obbligo per tutti i paesi membri dell’UE, in base a quanto previsto negli Articoli 11 e 17. Nel 2011 è stato pubblicato un documento che fornisce le linee guida di riferimento europee per il monitoraggio di habitat e specie (Evans & Arvela 2011). Su questa base metodologica, la Società Italiana di Scienza della Vegetazione (SISV), avvalendosi di un ampio gruppo di soci esperti, ha avviato un dibattito interno su principi, criteri, parametri e strumenti per il monitoraggio degli habitat di Allegato I e dei tipi di vegetazione in essi rappresentati. Il progetto è stato promosso dal Ministero dell’Ambiente e della Tutela del Territorio e del Mare e coordinato dall’Istituto Superiore per la Protezione e la Ricerca Ambientale, e si trova al momento in una fase prossima alla conclusione. A partire dalla documentazione già prodotta a livello nazionale per gli habitat italiani (Biondi et al., 2009, 2012, 2014; Genovesi et al., 2014), diversi aspetti critici sono stati esaminati attraverso una discussione scientifica ampiamente condivisa. In particolare, sono stati affrontati: gli aspetti legati alla scelta di strumenti adeguati per valutare i parametri area, struttura e funzione, prospettive future; il concetto di "specie tipica"; i metodi di campionamento habitat-specifici appropriati. Il protocollo sviluppato si pone come uno strumento pratico ed efficace, scientificamente valido e in linea con gli standard metodologici internazionali. Il suo utilizzo permetterà una raccolta armonizzata di dati su scala nazionale, rendendo possibile una valutazione comparata dello stato di conservazione di ciascun habitat.

Abstract

PRIAMO (PaRkinson And non Motor symptOms) is an epidemiology study aimed to assess the prevalence and incidence of non-motor symptoms (NMS) in patients with parkinsonism. PRIAMO consists of two phases: (1) a transversal assessment of the prevalence of NMS and (2) a longitudinal observation with two follow-up visits at 12 and 24 months to establish the incidence of NMS. A secondary aim of PRIAMO is to study the relationship between NMS and quality of life. Patients with parkinsonism have been evaluated in 59 Neurology Centres widely distributed throughout Italy. PRIAMO has analysed a total of 1307 patients (out of 1325 initially enrolled). We expect that PRIAMO will substantially help to quantify the burden of NMS in patients with parkinsonism.

24. Fuel-air mixing and distribution in a direct-injection stratified-charge rotary engine

Abstract

A three-dimensional model for flows and combustion in reciprocating and rotary engines is applied to a direct-injection stratified-charge rotary engine to identify the main parameters that control its burning rate. It is concluded that the orientation of the six sprays of the main injector with respect to the air stream is important to enhance vaporization and the production of flammable mixture. In particular, no spray should be in the wake of any other spray. It was predicted that if such a condition is respected, the indicated efficiency would increase by some 6 percent at higher loads and 2 percent at lower loads. The computations led to the design of a new injector tip that has since yielded slightly better efficiency gains than predicted.

Abstract

The light off transient of catalytic combustion of lean CO-air mixtures in a platinum coated channel of a honeycomb monolith is studied with a model that resolves transient radial and axial gradients in both the gas and the solid. For the conditions studied it is concluded that: the initial heat release occurs near the entrance at the gas-solid interface and is controlled by heterogeneous reactions; large spatial and temporal temperature gradients occur in the solid near the entrance controlled mostly by the availability of fuel; the temperature of the solid near the entrance achieves almost its steady state value before significant heating of the back; heterogeneous reactions and the gas heated up front and flowing downstream heat the back of the solid; the overall transient time is controlled by the thermal inertia of the solid and by forced convection; radiation significantly influences both transient and steady state particularly near the entrance; the oxidation of CO occurs mostly on the catalyst and becomes diffusion controlled soon into the transient.

The turbulent flowfield of a spark-ignition engine affects strongly the combustion characteristics of the engine. The flowfield depends on the design of the combustion chamber and the intake system. The present investigation is concerned with the effect of chamber design, and engine operating conditions on top dead center turbulence prior to ignition. It is shown that many of the trends which were identified in earlier studies can be obtained from a single model. The employed model takes into account a two-dimensional axisymmetric flowfield. Attention is given to governing equations, boundary and initial conditions, a comparison of the computed results with measurements, and the effect of swirl and squish.

Abstract

Catalytic combustors have demonstrated the ability to operate efficiently over a much wider range of fuel air ratios than are imposed by the flammability limits of conventional combustors. Extensive commercial use however needs the following: (1) the design of a catalyst with low ignition temperature and high temperature stability, (2) reducing fatigue due to thermal stresses during transient operation, and (3) the development of mathematical models that can be used as design optimization tools to isolate promising operating ranges for the numerous operating parameters. The current program of research involves the development of a two dimensional transient catalytic combustion model and the development of a new catalyst with low temperature light-off and high temperature stablity characteristics.

Abstract

A honeycomb catalyst of platinum (4.2 kg/cu m loading) over cordierite, with gamma-alumina washcoat, a cross section of 2.4 x 2.4 sq cm, a length of 7.6 cm, and a characteristic channel diameter of 1.4 mm is used as a steady flow reactor. Measurements are made with C3H8/air mixtures at 650 to 800 K inlet temperatures, 110 KPa pressure, 10 to 40 m/s inlet velocity, 0.19 to 0.32 equivalence ratios, and approximately 1.5 mole percent water content. The measured quantities are the substrate tempeature at ten axial locations, the exhaust gas temperature, the exhaust concentrations of CO, CO2, O2, and total hydrocarbons, and the pressure drop across the monolith. The measured quantities are compared with those computed with a two-dimensional steady-state model for axial and radial convection and diffusion of mass, momentum, energy and homogeneous (three overall reactions) and heterogeneous (infinitely fast) reactions. It is found that, under the tested conditions, most of the fuel is converted to CO2 and H2O at the surface. Gas-phase reactions tend rapidly to become more important as the temperature and equivalence ratio are increased and the flow velocity is decreased. Surface fuel conversion is much more rapid than fuel diffusion, resulting in diffusion-controlled oxidation.

Description of a method for determining the local parameters of the gas mixture resulting from the combustion of sprayed fuel in a gaseous oxidizer. The method is based on the measurement of local static pressures in the gas mixture and does not require the knowledge of the droplet distribution function, drag, and vaporization characteristics. A set of equations with substituted local pressure values is used for calculations. Application of the method is demonstrated on a liquid oxygen-ethanol rocket fuel.

Abstract

A constant cross-sectional area rocket motor was used to study the combustion of a spray of ethanol in gaseous oxygen. The variables of the combustion gas and the flux of liquid ethanol versus the distance from the injector, were determined by an experimental-analytical method which did not require any assumption about the distribution, drag, and vaporization of the fuel drops (static pressure measurements were used instead). The steady-state spray equation is solved, for various drag and vaporization models, and the local flux of liquid ethanol thus calculated is compared with the experimentally determined one for the purpose of selecting a proper spray combustion model.

Abstract

A vascular malformation, consisting of a venous vessel bridgeing the right inferior petrosal sinus and the anterior spinal veins, was found in the posterior fossa. The vessel presented a ring-like course around the right trigeminal root, and it was parallel and dorsal to the basilar artery. The malformation was associated with cutaneous and hepatic angiomas and peri-osteal lipomas. It had been clinically silent for 52 years, when it thrombosed causing death. The authors think that, within a general mesenchymopatic state, this is a result of the persistence of an embryonal cerebral venous pattern. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The conclusions are that: the breakup of full-cone Diesel jets is due primarily to aerodynamic interaction between the liquid surface and the chamber gas; the initial average size and velocity of the drops formed by the breakup of the outer surface of the jet can now be estimated and so can the length of the intact core but with greater uncertainty; after breakup a steady full-cone spray undergoes a development similar to that of incompressible jets; in Diesel engines it is the development region that is of importance; the major parameter in the difference between full-cone sprays and incompressible jets is the liquid-to-gas density ratio; in the absence of vaporization the most advanced of the available spray model reproduce full-cone sprays with adequate realism for applications; it is not yet known how vaporization changes the structure of these sprays and if available models adequately reproduce the changes.

Abstract

Results of research on a two dimensional, transient catalytic combustion model and on a high temperature perovskite catalyst are presented. A recently developed two dimensional, transient model has been used to study the ignition of carbon monoxide/air mixtures in a platinum coated catalytic honeycomb. Comparisons between calculated and measured steady state substrate temperature profiles and exhaust gas compositions show good agreement. A platinum doped perovskite catalyst has been proposed which will exhibit low temperature light off and high temperature stability. Preliminary tests using a perovskite powder with one percent by weight platinium are encouraging, showing very little change in surface activity when used with propane fuel. Variations in catalytic activity from sample to sample have also been found and after extensive testing the cause of these variations have not been identified. However, preliminary tests using Fourier transform infrared photoacoustic spectroscopy do indicate differences in the various catalyst samples that may be related to the difference in catalytic activity. The use of bench top oven and differential scanning calorimetry techniques for screening catalysts in terms of relative activity and aging characteristics has also been demonstrated. Abstract

Lean combustion of propane in platinum/alumina/cordierite catalysts has been studied at atmospheric pressure, gas velocities of 10-40 m/s, C3H8 equivalence ratios of .19 to .32 and H2O concentration of 1.2 to 1.7 mol %. Measurements of substrate temperature and gas composition, pressure, and temperature inside and downstream of the catalyst have been made. The dependences of substrate temperature, gas temperature, and gas composition of inlet temperature, reference velocity, and equivalence ratio have been investigated. A two-dimensional model of the gas-phase including the effect of finite-rate chemical kinetics at the substrate surface has been developed and tested. When the experimental wall temperature is used as boundary condition for the gas-phase equations, the emission predictions are in reasonably good agreement with the measured ones. The indications obtained from the model are that propane is oxidized via a multi-step kinetic mechanism, that in the range of temperatures and equivalence ratios explored, most of the fuel is burnt at the catalytic wall rather than in the gas phase, and that wall kinetics is slower than gas diffusion transport.

Abstract

Ignition of a quiescent propane/air mixture by a stationary, hot, inert particle has been modeled. The tentative conclusion from the model is that an abraded aluminum particle must have a diameter greater than 800 microns to ignite a stoichiometric propane/air mixture. Experimental data show that a burning aluminum particle must be initially larger than 20-40 microns in diameter to ignite a stoichiometric methane/air mixture. Lean combustion of propane in platinum/alumina/cordierite catalysts has been studied at atmospheric pressure and gas velocities of 5-30 m/s. Measurements of substrate temperature and gas composition, pressure and temperature inside and downstream of the catalyst have been made. The dependences of substrate temperature, gas temperature, and gas composition on inlet temperature, reference velocity, and equivalence ratio have been investigated. Homogeneous reactions in the exhaust are observed only at the higher equivalence rations. Broader interpretation of the variation in exhaust composition with inlet conditions awaits completion of the development of the numerical model. (Author)

Abstract

Measurements of catalytic combustion of lean mixtures of propane/air at atmospheric pressure over platinum/alumina/cordierite catalysts were carried out over a broad range of equivalence ratios and flow velocities. Substrate (honeycomb) temperatures, chemical species at the catalyst were measured. A substantial data base for catalytic oxidation C3H8 over platinum catalysts was obtained. A two-dimensional model of the gas-phase oxidation of propane was developed. When the experimental wall temperature is used as the boundary condition for the gas-phase reactions; emissions predicted from the model agree well with measured values. From comparison with the experimental data, indications are that propane oxidation takes place via a three-step kinetic mechanism. Also from study of the relative importance of gas-phase vs. surface oxidation, conclusions are that most of the propane is burnt in the gas-phase rather than at the catalytic wall and that the wall kinetics is slower than the gas diffusion transplant.
