Rapidly expanding fed aquaculture demands high-quality, sustainable nutrient sources for utilisation as dietary ingredients. Exploring the potential of under-utilised resources from other industries is imperative to replace finite natural resources, such as fish meal. Marine gammarids may be an excellent source of essential fatty acids; however, their aquaculture using formulated diets remains untested in terms of survival, growth and nutritional value of the cultured product. Here, juveniles of 2 marine gammarid species, Gammarus locusta and Echinogammarus marinus, were maintained in controlled feeding experiments with 2 marine diets (Ulva spp. and Fucus spp.) and 2 terrestrial diets (lupin meal and carrot leaves). G. locusta exhibited higher survival rates, particularly when fed carrot leaves, an agricultural waste product. Fatty acid profiles of the resulting G. locusta product appear well suited for marine finfish nutrition, indicating high suitability of G. locusta as an aquaculture diet source. In contrast, whilst E. marinus may provide beneficial fatty acid profiles for aquatic animal nutrition, its poor growth performance in this study indicates that further dietary/culture research is required for this species. Our results indicate, for the first time, that marine gammarids are capable of trophic upgrading and can use non-marine diets for healthy growth in culture, but their suitability as a formulated feed ingredient for specific fish or crustacean species needs to be investigated individually. Future research should include the development of optimal large-scale production as well as investigation of optimal methods of inclusion of gammarids as feed ingredient for target aquaculture species.

Microbial composition and diversity in marine sediments are shaped by environmental, biological, and anthropogenic processes operating at different scales. However, our understanding of benthic microbial biogeography remains limited. Here, we used 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing to characterize benthic microbiota in the North Sea from the top centimeter of 339 sediment samples. We utilized spatially explicit statistical models, to disentangle the effects of the different predictors, including bottom trawling intensity, a prevalent industrial fishing practice which heavily impacts benthic ecosystems. Fitted models demonstrate how the geographic interplay of different environmental and anthropogenic drivers shapes the diversity, structure and potential metabolism of benthic microbial communities. Sediment properties were the primary determinants, with diversity increasing with sediment permeability but also with mud content, highlighting different underlying processes. Additionally, diversity and structure varied with total organic matter content, temperature, bottom shear stress and bottom trawling. Changes in diversity associated with bottom trawling intensity were accompanied by shifts in predicted energy metabolism. Specifically, with increasing trawling intensity, we observed a transition toward more aerobic heterotrophic and less denitrifying predicted metabolism. Our findings provide first insights into benthic microbial biogeographic patterns on a large spatial scale and illustrate how anthropogenic activity such as bottom trawling may influence the distribution and abundances of microbes and potential metabolism at macroecological scales., (© 2023. Sounds from human activities such as shipping and seismic surveys have been progressively invading natural soundscapes and pervading oceanic ambient sounds for decades. Benthic invertebrates are important ecosystem engineers that continually rework the sediment they live in. Here, we tested how low-frequency noise (LFN), a significant component of noise pollution, affects the sediment reworking activities of selected macrobenthic invertebrates. In a controlled laboratory setup, the effects of acute LFN exposure on the behavior of three abundant bioturbators on the North Atlantic coasts were explored for the first time by tracking their sediment reworking and bioirrigation activities in noisy and control environments via luminophore and sodium bromide (NaBr) tracers, respectively. The amphipod crustacean Corophium volutator was negatively affected by LFN, exhibiting lower bioturbation rates and shallower luminophore burial depths compared to controls. The effect of LFN on the polychaete Arenicola marina and the bivalve Limecola balthica remained inconclusive, although A. marina displayed greater variability in bioirrigation rates when exposed to LFN. Furthermore, a potential stress response was observed in L. balthica that could reduce bioturbation potential. Benthic macroinvertebrates may be in jeopardy along with the crucial ecosystem-maintaining services they provide. Data on marine biota exist in many formats and sources, such as published literature, data repositories, and unpublished material. Due to this heterogeneity, information is difficult to find, access and combine, severely impeding its reuse for further scientific analysis and its long-term availability for future generations. To address this challenge, we present CRITTERBASE, a publicly accessible data warehouse and interactive portal that currently hosts quality-controlled and taxonomically standardized presence/absence, abundance, and biomass data for 18,644 samples and 3,664 benthic taxa (2,824 of which at species level). These samples were collected by grabs, underwater imaging or trawls in Arctic, North Sea and Antarctic regions between the years 1800 and 2014. Data were collated from literature, unpublished data, own research and online repositories. All metadata and links to primary sources are included. We envision CRITTERBASE becoming a valuable and continuously expanding tool for a wide range of usages, such as studies of spatio-temporal biodiversity patterns, impacts and risks of climate change or the evidence-based design of marine protection policies., (© 2022. Over the last years, the development of offshore renewable energy installations such as offshore wind farms led to an increasing number of man-made structures in marine environments. Since 2009, benthic impact monitoring programs were carried out in wind farms installed in the southern North Sea. We collated and analyzed data sets from three major monitoring programs. Our analysis considered a total of 2849 sampling points converted to a set of biodiversity response metrics. We analyzed biodiversity changes related to the implementation of offshore wind farms and generalized the correlation of these changes with spatial and temporal patterns. Our results demonstrate that depth, season and distance to structure (soft-bottom community) consistently determined diversity indicators and abundance parameters, whereas the age and the country affiliation were significantly related to some but not all indices. The water depth was the most important structuring factor for fouling communities while seasonal effects were driving most of the observed changes in soft-sediment communities. We demonstrate that a meta-analysis can provide an improved level of understanding of ecological patterns on large-scale effects of anthropogenic structures on marine biodiversity, which were not visible in single monitoring studies. We believe that meta-analyses should become an indispensable tool for management of offshore wind farm effects in the future, particularly in the view of the foreseen development of offshore renewable energies. This might lead to a better picture and more comprehensive view on potential alterations. The geographic distributions of some coastal marine species have appeared as cosmopolitan ever since they were first scientifically documented. In particular, for many benthic species that are associated with anthropogenic substrata, there is much speculation as to whether or not their broad distributions can be explained by natural mechanisms of dispersal. Here, we focused on two congeneric coastal crustaceans with cosmopolitan distributions-the tube-dwelling amphipods Jassa marmorata and Jassa slatteryi . Both species are common elements of marine biofouling on nearly all kinds of artificial hard substrata in temperate to warm seas. We hypothesized that the two species' modern occurrences across the oceans are the result of human shipping activities that started centuries ago. Mitochondrial DNA sequences of the CO1 fragment of specimens from distinct marine regions around the world were analysed, evaluating genetic structure and migration models and making inferences on putative native ranges of the two Jassa species. Populations of both species exhibited considerable genetic diversity with differing levels of geographic structure. For both species, at least two dominant haplotypes were shared among several geographic populations. Rapid demographic expansion and high migration rates between geographically distant regions support a scenario of ongoing dispersal all over the world. Our findings indicate that the likely former native range of J. marmorata is the Northwest Atlantic, whereas the likely former native range of J. slatteryi is the Northern Pacific region. As corroborated by the genetic connectivity between populations, shipping still appears to be the more successful vector of the two species' dispersal when compared to natural mechanisms. The rapid dissemination of microplastics in many habitats of the oceans has raised concerns about the consequences for marine biota and ecosystems. Many adverse effects of microplastics on marine invertebrates are consequences of ingestion. Accordingly, the identification of mechanisms that facilitate the uptake of microplastics is essential for the evaluation of possible implications for marine organisms and food webs. Gastropods produce mucus for locomotion. Gastropod pedal mucus naturally retains formerly suspended micro-organisms, such as bacteria, microalgae, and seaweed spores. The retained organisms are consumed by gastropods that forage on pedal mucus. Here, we investigated the potential of gastropod pedal mucus to retain suspended microplastic particles and make them available for ingestion by periwinkles that forage on the contaminated mucus. In laboratory experiments, mucus of the periwinkles Littorina littorea and Littorina obtusata efficiently retained microplastics. Retention of microplastics varied between mucus from conspecifics of different size but not between mucus from either species. The density of microplastics in mucus trails increased concomitantly with the experimental particle concentration but was independent of incubation time. Aging of mucus and, particularly, desiccation affected the retention of microplastics. Periwinkles ingested microplastics when foraging on the contaminated mucus. Taxonomy plays a central role in biological sciences. It provides a communication system for scientists as it aims to enable correct identification of the studied organisms. As a consequence, species descriptions should seek to include as much available information as possible at species level to follow an integrative concept of 'taxonomics'. Here, we describe the cryptic species Epimeria frankei sp. nov. from the North Sea, and also redescribe its sister species, Epimeria cornigera. The morphological information obtained is substantiated by DNA barcodes and complete nuclear 18S rRNA gene sequences. In addition, we provide, for the first time, full mitochondrial genome data as part of a metazoan species description for a holotype, as well as the neotype. This study represents the first successful implementation of the recently proposed concept of taxonomics, using data from high-throughput technologies for integrative taxonomic studies, allowing the highest level of confidence for both biodiversity and ecological research.

The mammalian cell cycle is a complex and tightly controlled event. Myriads of different control mechanisms are involved in its regulation. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA) have emerged as important regulators of many cellular processes including cellular proliferation. However, a more global and unbiased approach to identify lncRNAs with importance for cell proliferation is missing. Here, we present a lentiviral shRNA library-based approach for functional lncRNA profiling. We validated our library approach in NIH3T3 (3T3) fibroblasts by identifying lncRNAs critically involved in cell proliferation. Using stringent selection criteria we identified lncRNA NR_015491.1 out of 3842 different RNA targets represented in our library. We termed this transcript Ntep (non-coding transcript essential for proliferation), as a bona fide lncRNA essential for cell cycle progression. Inhibition of Ntep in 3T3 and primary fibroblasts prevented normal cell growth and expression of key fibroblast markers. Mechanistically, we discovered that Ntep is important to activate P53 concomitant with increased apoptosis and cell cycle blockade in late G2/M. Our findings suggest Ntep to serve as an important regulator of fibroblast proliferation and function. In summary, our study demonstrates the applicability of an innovative shRNA library approach to identify long non-coding RNA functions in a massive parallel approach.

Aims: Non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) are critically involved in cardiovascular pathophysiology. Since they are measurable in most body fluids, they have been proposed as circulating biomarkers. We examined the prognostic value of a specific candidate miRNA in a large cohort of patients with chronic heart failure (HF) enrolled in a multicentre clinical trial., Methods and Results: Plasma levels of miR-132 were measured using miRNA-specific PCR-based technologies at randomization in 953 patients with chronic, symptomatic HF from the GISSI-Heart Failure trial. The association with fatal (all-cause and cardiovascular death) and non-fatal events (time to first admission to hospital for cardiovascular reasons or worsening of HF) and the incremental risk prediction were estimated in adjusted models. Higher circulating miR-132 levels were independently associated with younger age, better renal filtration, ischaemic aetiology of HF, more severe HF symptoms, higher diastolic blood pressure, higher cholesterol, and male sex. After extensive adjustment for demographic, clinical, and echocardiographic risk factors and baseline NT-proBNP concentrations, miR-132 remained associated only with HF hospitalizations (hazard ratio 0.79, 95% confidence interval 0.66-0.95, P = 0.01) and improved its risk prediction with the continuous net reclassification index (cNRI 0.205, P = 0.001)., Conclusion: In well characterized patients with chronic HF, circulating miR-132 levels rise with the severity of HF. Lower circulating miR-132 levels improved risk prediction for HF readmission beyond traditional risk factors, but not for mortality. MiR-132 may be helpful to intensify strategies aimed at reducing re-hospitalization, which has a substantial health and economic burden in HF., (© 2017 The Authors. Advances in RNA-sequencing techniques have led to the discovery of thousands of non-coding transcripts with unknown function. There are several types of non-coding linear RNAs such as microRNAs (miRNA) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA), as well as circular RNAs (circRNA) consisting of a closed continuous loop. This review guides the reader through important aspects of non-coding RNA biology. This includes their biogenesis, mode of actions, physiological function, as well as their role in the disease context (such as in cancer or the cardiovascular system). Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a hereditary heart disease with a high risk for sudden cardiac death in young people. As a subtype, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM) additionally has a left ventricular outflow gradient, showing stronger symptoms and requires a different treatment compared with hypertrophic nonobstructive cardiomyopathy (HNCM). In this study our aim was to investigate the regulation of mitochondrial and cardiac remodeling associated long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in blood of patients affected with HOCM and HNCM. We included 28 HNCM, 57 HOCM, and 26 control inviduals. Already known mitochondrial and cardiac remodeling associated lncRNAs uc004cos.4, uc004coz.1, uc004cov.4, uc011mfi.2, uc022bqw.1, uc022bqs.1, and uc022bqu.1 were amplified in serum of these patients and correlated with clinical parameters. Long noncoding RNAs uc004cov.4 and uc022bqu.1 were significantly increased in patients with HOCM but not in patients with HNCM. With the use of receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, lncRNAs uc004cov.4 and uc022bqu.1 were able to identify HOCM patients. In our study we evidenced that the specific mitochondrial long noncoding RNAs uc004cov.4 and uc022bqu.1 were upregulated in patients with HOCM and they were also able to identify HOCM and could be developed as useful clinical biomarkers in the future., (Copyright © 2016 the American Physiological Society.)

Electromagnetic field enhancement (FE) effects occurring in thin gold films 3-12-nm are investigated with two-photon photoluminescence (TPL) and Raman scanning optical microscopies. The samples are characterized using scanning electron microscopy images and linear optical spectroscopy. TPL images exhibit a strong increase in the level of TPL signals for films thicknesses 3-8-nm, near the percolation threshold. For some thicknesses, TPL measurements reveal super-cubic dependences on the incident power. We ascribe this feature to the occurrence of very strongly localized and enhanced electromagnetic fields due to multiple light scattering in random nanostructures that might eventually lead to white-light generation. Raman images exhibit increasing Raman signals when decreasing the film thickness from 12 to 6-nm and decreasing signal for the 3-nm-film. This feature correlates with the TPL observations indicating that highest FE is to be expected near the percolation threshold.

We report detailed characterization of surface plasmon-polariton guiding along 1-, 1.5- and 2-μm-wide channels in high-density (~75 μm -2 ) random arrays of gold 70-nm-high and 50-nm-wide nanoparticles fabricated on a 70-nm-thin gold film supported by a 170-μm-thick silica substrate. The mode propagation losses, effective index dispersion, and scattering parameters are characterized using leakage-radiation microscopy, in direct and Fourier planes, in the wavelength range of 740-840 nm. It is found that the mode supported by 2-μm-wide channels propagates over > 10 μm in straight waveguides, with the corresponding S-bends and Y-splitters functioning reasonably well. The results show that the SPP waves can efficiently be guided by narrow scattering-free channels cut through randomly corrugated surface regions. The potential of this waveguiding mechanism is yet to be fully explored by tuning the scattering mean-free path and localization length via the density and size of random nanoparticles. Nevertheless, the results obtained are encouraging and promising diverse applications of these waveguide components in plasmonic circuitry.

During the last years DNA barcoding has become a popular method of choice for molecular specimen identification. Here we present a comprehensive DNA barcode library of various crustacean taxa found in the North Sea, one of the most extensively studied marine regions of the world. Our data set includes 1,332 barcodes covering 205 species, including taxa of the Amphipoda, Copepoda, Decapoda, Isopoda, Thecostraca, and others. This dataset represents the most extensive DNA barcode library of the Crustacea in terms of species number to date. By using the Barcode of Life Data Systems (BOLD), unique BINs were identified for 198 (96.6%) of the analyzed species. Six species were characterized by two BINs (2.9%), and three BINs were found for the amphipod species Gammarus salinus Spooner, 1947 (0.4%). Intraspecific distances with values higher than 2.2% were revealed for 13 species (6.3%). Exceptionally high distances of up to 14.87% between two distinct but monophyletic clusters were found for the parasitic copepod Caligus elongatus Nordmann, 1832, supporting the results of previous studies that indicated the existence of an overlooked sea louse species. In contrast to these high distances, haplotype-sharing was observed for two decapod spider crab species, Macropodia parva Van Noort & Adema, 1985 and Macropodia rostrata (Linnaeus, 1761), underlining the need for a taxonomic revision of both species. Summarizing the results, our study confirms the application of DNA barcodes as highly effective identification system for the analyzed marine crustaceans of the North Sea and represents an important milestone for modern biodiversity assessment studies using barcode sequences.

Rationale: Many processes in endothelial cells including angiogenic responses are regulated by microRNAs. However, there is limited information available about their complex cross-talk in regulating certain endothelial functions., Aim: The objective of this study is to identify endothelial functions of the pro-hypertrophic miR-212/132 cluster and its cross-talk with other microRNAs during development and disease., Methods and Results: We here show that anti-angiogenic stimulation by transforming growth factor-beta activates the microRNA-212/132 cluster by derepression of their transcriptional co-activator cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB)-binding protein (CBP) which is a novel target of a previously identified pro-angiogenic miRNA miR-30a-3p in endothelial cells. Surprisingly, despite having the same seed-sequence, miR-212 and miR-132 exerted differential effects on endothelial transcriptome regulation and cellular functions with stronger endothelial inhibitory effects caused by miR-212. These differences could be attributed to additional auxiliary binding of miR-212 to its targets. In vivo, deletion of the miR-212/132 cluster increased endothelial vasodilatory function, improved angiogenic responses during postnatal development and in adult mice., Conclusion: Our results identify (i) a novel miRNA-cross-talk involving miR-30a-3p and miR-212, which led to suppression of important endothelial genes such as GAB1 and SIRT1 finally culminating in impaired endothelial function; and (ii) microRNAs may have different biological roles despite having the same seed sequence., (Published on behalf of the European Society of Cardiology. Plasmonic black surfaces formed by two-dimensional arrays of ultra-sharp convex metal grooves, in which the incident radiation is converted into gap surface plasmon polaritons (GSPPs) and subsequently absorbed (via adiabatic nanofocusing), are fabricated and investigated experimentally for gold, nickel, and palladium, using scanning electron microscopy, optical microscopy, and reflection spectroscopy for their characterization. Absolute reflectivity spectra obtained for all fabricated arrays demonstrate very efficient and broadband absorption of unpolarized light exceeding the level of 95%, averaged over the investigated wavelength range of 400-985 nm. The highest averaged absorption level (~97%) is achieved with 250-nm-period arrays in palladium that also has the highest melting temperature (~1552°C), promising thereby potential applications for broadband absorption, e.g., within thermophotovoltaics. For one-dimensional arrays, GSPPs are excited only with the electric field polarized perpendicular to the groove orientation, resulting in 94-96% absorption of the appropriately polarized light for the arrays in nickel and palladium while featuring practically flat surface reflectivity spectra for the orthogonal polarization. The largest ratio (~10.7) between averaged reflectivities for orthogonal polarizations is achieved with the groove arrays in palladium, pointing thereby towards applications as broadband and low-dispersion linear polarizers operating in reflection, e.g., within ultra-fast optics.

Resonant electromagnetic properties of nanoparticles fabricated from high-index semiconductor or dielectric materials are very promising for the realization of novel nanoantennas and metamaterials. In this paper we study optical resonances of Si nanocylinders located on a silica substrate. Multipole analysis of the experimental scattering spectra, based on the decomposed discrete dipole approximation, confirms resonant excitation of electric and magnetic dipole modes in the Si nanocylinders. Influences of light polarization and incident angle on the scattering properties of the nanocylinders are studied. It is shown that the dependence of resonant excitation of the electric and magnetic modes in the nanocylinders on incident angle and polarization of light allows controlling and manipulating the scattered light in this system. The demonstrated properties of Si nanocylinders can be used for the realization of dielectric metasurfaces with different functional optical properties.

Excitation of localized and delocalized surface plasmon resonances can be used for turning excellent reflectors of visible light, such as gold and silver, into efficient absorbers, whose wavelength, polarization or angular bandwidths are however necessarily limited owing to the resonant nature of surface plasmon excitations involved. Nonresonant absorption has so far been achieved by using combined nano- and micro-structural surface modifications and with composite materials involving metal nanoparticles embedded in dielectric layers. Here we realize nonresonant light absorption in a well-defined geometry by using ultra-sharp convex metal grooves via adiabatic nanofocusing of gap surface plasmon modes excited by scattering off subwavelength-sized wedges. We demonstrate experimentally that two-dimensional arrays of sharp convex grooves in gold ensure efficient (>87%) broadband (450-850 nm) absorption of unpolarized light, reaching an average level of 96%. Efficient absorption of visible light by nanostructured metal surfaces open new exciting perspectives within plasmonics, especially for thermophotovoltaics.

We present a new approach for making interconnected hemispherical shells by stripping Au from templates of anodized aluminum, where the metal thickness can be adjusted without affecting the outer radius of curvature, film roughness and the sharpness of the hemisphere contact areas. This provides increased understanding of the surface plasmon resonances (SPRs) observed for Film-On-Nanospheres (FONs) by decoupling these parameters, which are coupled in the case of FONs. Investigating the influence of the shell thicknesses on the spectral positions of SPRs for FONs involves a dielectric core with a fixed radius encased by a metal film with adjustable thickness. By performing linear reflection spectroscopy, we demonstrate a wide tunability of the SPR by tailoring the inner hemisphere diameter, while keeping the outer diameter fixed. Deposition of extra Au on top of thick, previously stripped hemispherical shells isolates optical response contributions from Au grain- and island-mediated roughness, and unsharpening contact areas in form of decreasing LSPR quality factor. Two-photon luminescence scanning optical microscopy of shells with different thicknesses, applying several different laser wavelengths, is exploited to map local electromagnetic hot spots and correlate the high field enhancements with the linear reflection spectroscopy measurements.

Using two-photon luminescence (TPL) microscopy and local reflection spectroscopy we investigate electromagnetic field enhancement effects from a µm-sized composition of 450-nm-deep V-grooves milled by focused ion beam in a thick gold film and assembled to feature, within the same structure, individual V-grooves as well as one- and two-dimensional 300-nm-period arrays of, respectively, parallel and crossed V-grooves. We analyze TPL signal levels obtained at different spatial locations and with different combinations of excitation and detection polarizations, discovering that the TPL emitted from the V-grooves is polarized in the direction perpendicular to that of the V-grooves. This feature implies that the TPL occurs solely in the form of (p-polarized) surface plasmon modes and originates therefore from the very bottom of V-grooves, where no photonic modes exist. Implications of the results obtained to evaluation of local field enhancements using TPL microscopy, especially when investigating extended structures exhibiting different radiation channels, are discussed.

Using linear reflection spectroscopy and far-field two-photon luminescence (TPL) scanning optical microscopy, we characterize highly enhancing, large-area gold nanostructures formed on porous templates made by anodization of aluminum with either oxalic acid or phosphoric acid. These templates are formed by a newly developed, stepwise technique making use of protective top oxide layers facilitating continuously tunable interpore distances. The upper, porous alumina layers are subsequently removed and the remaining embossed barrier layer is used as template for the sputtered gold, where the density of gold particles covering the sample is adjusted by regulating the sputtering conditions. We observe spatially averaged field intensity enhancement (FE) factors of up to ~5.210(2) and bright spots in the TPL-images exhibiting maximum FE factors of up to approximately 1410(2) which is the largest estimated FE from any hitherto examined structures with our setup. We relate this large-area massive FE to constructive interference of surface plasmon (SP) polaritons scattered from the densely packed, randomly distributed gold particles and directly correlate this particle density with the strong and broad SP resonances as well as the magnitude of the FE factors. The average FE and the position of high enhancements in the TPL-images are dictated by the excitation wavelength, and the structures could evidently serve as versatile structures facilitating practical molecular sensing.

Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) from Rhodamine 6G homogenously adsorbed on both periodic arrays of and individual gold nanoparticles is investigated using high-resolution Raman imaging with polarized excitation. Rectangular 50-nm-high nanoparticles of different sizes chosen to ensure the presence of localized surface plasmon resonances close to the 532-nm excitation wavelength are fabricated with electron-beam lithography on the surface of a smooth gold film and arranged both individually (i.e., placed sufficiently far apart) and in 740-nm-period arrays. Linear reflection spectra and high-resolution Raman images obtained from arrays of nanoparticles are compared revealing good correspondence in the spectral dependences of reflection and local SERS enhancements (measured at the top of nanoparticles). The latter are related to those observed with individual nanoparticles. The results obtained emphasize the importance and quantify the influence of particle dimensions, polarized excitation, collctive resonances and SERS locations.

Resonant scattering and local field enhancements by 11-nm-thin gold nanostrip antennas due to constructive interference of counter propagating slow surface plasmon polaritons is investigated. We characterize nanostrips of widths between 50-530 nm using both reflection spectroscopy and nonlinear scanning optical microscopy, in which two-photon-excited photoluminescence (TPL) excited with a strongly focused laser beam at the wavelength 745 nm is detected. We use TPL images to map the local field enhancements from individual nanostrips at a resolution of 0.35 microm and compare results with theoretical calculated reflection spectra, enhancement levels and field distributions across the strip.

Fractal shaped structures formed with a 100-nm-period square lattice of gold nanoparticles placed on a gold film are characterized by using far-field nonlinear scanning optical microscopy, in which two-photon photoluminescence (TPL) excited with a strongly focused laser beam (in the wavelength range of 730 - 790 nm) is detected. The TPL images recorded for all wavelengths exhibit diffraction-limited (~ 0.6 mum) bright spots corresponding to the field intensity enhancement of up to 150, whose positions are dictated by the incident light wavelength and polarization. We relate these field enhancements to the occurrence of constructive interference of surface plasmons (SPs), which are excited by the incident radiation (due to scattering by nanoparticles) and partially reflected by fractal shaped boundaries due to a difference in the SP effective index at a flat and periodically corrugated gold surface. The conjecture on SP index difference is verified with observations (using leakage radiation microscopy) of SP focusing by circular and waveguiding by rectangular areas filled with periodically arranged nanoparticles.
