BACKGROUND: The rise of insecticide resistance against malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa has resulted in the need to consider other methods of vector control. The potential use of biological methods, including larvivorous fish, Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) and plant shading, is sustainable and environmentally friendly options. This study examined the survivorship of Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestus larvae and habitat productivity in four permanent habitat types in Homa Bay county, western Kenya. METHODS: Predator densities were studied in a laboratory setup while habitat productivity and larval survivorship was studied in field setup. RESULTS: Fish were observed as the most efficient predator (75.8% larval reduction rate) followed by water boatman (69%), and dragonfly nymph (69.5%) in predation rates. Lower predation rates were observed in backswimmers (31%), water beetles (14.9%), water spiders (12.2%), mayflies (7.3%), and tadpoles (6.9%). Increase in predator density in the field setup resulted in decreased Culex larval density. Larval and pupa age-specific distribution was determined and their survivorship curves constructed. Combined larvae (Stage I-IV) to pupa mortality was over 97% for An. arabiensis and 100% for An. funestus. The highest larval stage survival rate was from larval stages I to II and the lowest from larval stage IV to pupa. Stage-specific life tables indicated high mortality rates at every developmental stage, especially at the larval stage II and III. CONCLUSION: Determination of the efficiency of various larval predators and habitat productivity will help with the correct identification of productive habitats and selection of complementary vector control methods through environmental management and/or predator introduction (for instance fish) in the habitats.

Bays are extensively impacted by human activities, and an accurate assessment of ecological quality is crucial for the environmental management and protection of bays. Most studies indicate that evaluating the ecological quality of bays using a single index presents challenges. In our study, we used five benthic biotic indices and a composite index to assess the ecological quality of three bays in South Korea. Our results revealed disparities in the ecological quality status assessment using five benthic biotic indices. The composite index performed better than the other benthic biotic indices in a principal coordinate analysis. Significant differences were observed between the values classifying stations as having an acceptable or unacceptable final ecological quality in terms of species indices (except for the Pielou's evenness index) and the abundance of opportunist species (p < 0.05). Consequently, we advocate for using a composite index to assess the ecological quality of the bays of the West Sea of South Korea. Furthermore, our study provides valuable information for marine ecological management and policy formulation in Korea and offers recommendations for using the composite index in future research. The extent of parallel genomic responses to similar selective pressures depends on a complex array of environmental, demographic, and evolutionary forces. Laboratory experiments with replicated selective pressures yield mixed outcomes under controlled conditions and our understanding of genomic parallelism in the wild is limited to a few well-established systems. Here, we examine genomic signals of selection in the eelgrass Zostera marina across temperature gradients in adjacent embayments. Although we find many genomic regions with signals of selection within each bay there is very little overlap in signals of selection at the SNP level, despite most polymorphisms being shared across bays. We do find overlap at the gene level, potentially suggesting multiple mutational pathways to the same phenotype. Using polygenic models we find that some sets of candidate SNPs are able to predict temperature across both bays, suggesting that small but parallel shifts in allele frequencies may be missed by independent genome scans. Together, these results highlight the continuous rather than binary nature of parallel evolution in polygenic traits and the complexity of evolutionary predictability.

Gravid Anopheles malaria vectors depend on both chemical and physical (including microbial) cues for selection of preferred habitats for oviposition. This study focused on assessing the effects of bacterial composition and habitat metabolites on malaria vector larval availability in irrigated and non-irrigated potential larval sources. Water samples were collected from larval positive and negative habitats in the irrigated and non- irrigated areas of Homa Bay county. Bacteria cultured from the water samples were subjected to Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) for species identification. DNA was extracted from the colonies and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequencing done. Finally, the metabolite composition of larval positive and negative habitats was determined. MALDI-TOF MS results revealed that Bacillus was the only genera identified from larval sources in the non-irrigated zone. In the irrigated area, Shigella was the dominant genera (47%) while Escherichia coli was the abundant species (13/51). Of the sequenced isolates, 65% were Bacillus. Larvicidal isolates Brevibacillus brevis, Bacillus subtilis, and Exiguobacterium profundum were isolated and grouped with Bacillus mojavensis, Bacillus tequilensis, Bacillus stercoris, and Brevibacillus agri. Irrigated areas with larvae had reduced crude fat (0.01%) and protein content (0.13%) in comparison to those without larvae. In irrigated and non- irrigated areas, larval presence was evident in habitats with high total chlorophyll content (1.12 μg/g vs 0.81μg/g and 3.37 μg/g vs 0.82). Aquatic habitats with larvae in both irrigated and non-irrigated areas exhibited higher sugar concentration than habitats without larvae; however, when compared, non-irrigated areas with larvae had higher sugar concentration than similar habitats in irrigated areas. In addition, substantial concentrations of Manganese, Calcium, and Copper were found in aquatic habitats containing larvae in both irrigated and non-irrigated areas. These results allow for prospective examination as potential larvicidal or adulticidal agents and could be considered when designing potential vector control interventions.

Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are a cosmopolitan species but are only found in ice-free regions of the ocean. It is unknown how their distribution might change in regions undergoing rapid loss of sea ice and ocean warming like Baffin Bay in the eastern Canadian Arctic. In 2014 and 2018, sperm whales were sighted near Eclipse Sound, Baffin Bay: the first recorded uses of this region by sperm whales. In this study, we investigate the spatiotemporal distribution of sperm whales near Eclipse Sound using visual and acoustic data. We combine several published open-source, data sets to create a map of historical sperm whale presence in the region. We use passive acoustic data from two recording sites between 2015 and 2019 to investigate more recent presence in the region. We also analyze regional trends in sea ice concentration (SIC) dating back to 1901 and relate acoustic presence of sperm whales to the mean SIC near the recording sites. We found no records of sperm whale sightings near Eclipse Sound outside of the 2014/2018 observations. Our acoustic data told a different story, with sperm whales recorded yearly from 2015 to 2019 with presence in the late summer and fall months. Sperm whale acoustic presence increased over the 5-year study duration and was closely related to the minimum SIC each year. Sperm whales, like other cetaceans, are ecosystem sentinels, or indicators of ecosystem change. Increasing number of days with sperm whale presence in the Eclipse Sound region could indicate range expansion of sperm whales as a result of changes in sea ice. Monitoring climate change-induced range expansion in this region is important to understand how increasing presence of a top-predator might impact the Arctic food web.

BackgroundLong-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) have been the primary vector control strategy until indoor residual spraying (IRS) was added in Homa Bay and Migori Counties in western Kenya. The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of LLINs integrated with IRS on the prevalence of asymptomatic and submicroscopic Plasmodium infections in Homa Bay County.MethodsA two-stage cluster sampling procedure was employed to enroll study participants aged ≥ 6 months old. Four consecutive community cross-sectional surveys for Plasmodium infection were conducted in residents of Homa Bay county, Kenya. Prior to the start of the study, all study households received LLINs, which were distributed between June 2017 and March 2018. The first (February 2018) and second (June 2018) surveys were conducted before and after the first round of IRS (Feb-Mar 2018), while the third (February 2019) and fourth (June 2019) surveys were conducted before and after the second application of IRS (February-March 2019). ObjectiveThis study aims at developing a pipeline that provides the capability to include the catheter effect in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations of the cardiovascular system and other human vascular flows carried out with the open-source software SimVascular. This tool is particularly useful for CFD simulation of interventional radiology procedures such as tumor embolization where estimation of a therapeutic agent distribution is of interest.ResultsA pipeline is developed that generates boundary condition files which can be used in SimVascular CFD simulations. The boundary condition files are modified such that they simulate the effect of catheter presence on the flow field downstream of the inlet. Using this pipeline, the catheter flow, velocity profile, radius, wall thickness, and deviation from the vessel center can be defined. Since our method relies on the manipulation of the boundary condition that is imposed on the inlet, it is sensitive to the mesh density. The finer the mesh is (especially around the catheter wall), the more accurate the velocity estimations are. In this study, we also utilized this pipeline to qualitatively investigate the effect of catheter presence on the flow field in a truncated right hepatic arterial tree of a liver cancer patient.

Earth-observing satellites are a major research tool for spatially explicit ecosystem nowcasting and forecasting. However, there are practical challenges when integrating satellite data into usable real-time products for stakeholders. The need of forecast immediacy and accuracy means that forecast systems must account for missing data and data latency while delivering a timely, accurate, and actionable product to stakeholders. This is especially true for species that have legal protection. Acipenser oxyrinchus oxyrinchus (Atlantic sturgeon) were listed under the United States Endangered Species Act in 2012, which triggered immediate management action to foster population recovery and increase conservation measures. Building upon an existing research occurrence model, we developed an Atlantic sturgeon forecast system in the Delaware Bay, USA. To overcome missing satellite data due to clouds and produce a 3-d forecast of ocean conditions, we implemented data interpolating empirical orthogonal functions (DINEOF) on daily observed satellite data. We applied the Atlantic sturgeon research model to the DINEOF output and found that it correctly predicted Atlantic sturgeon telemetry occurrences over 90% of the time within a 3-d forecast. A similar framework has been utilized to forecast harmful algal blooms, but to our knowledge, this is the first time a species distribution model has been applied to DINEOF gap-filled data to produce a forecast product for fishes. To implement this product into an applied management setting, we worked with state and federal organizations to develop real-time and forecasted risk maps in the Delaware River Estuary for both state-level managers and commercial fishers. An automated system creates and distributes these risk maps to subscribers mobile devices, highlighting areas that should be avoided to reduce interactions. Additionally, an interactive web interface allows users to plot historic, current, future, and climatological risk maps as well as the underlying model output of Atlantic sturgeon occurrence. The mobile system and web tool provide both stakeholders and managers real-time access to estimated occurrences of Atlantic sturgeon, enabling conservation planning and informing fisher behavior to reduce interactions with this endangered species while minimizing impacts to fisheries and other projects.

Despite being the largest estuary on the west coast of North America, no in-depth survey of microbial communities in San Francisco Bay (SFB) waters currently exists. In this study, we analyze bacterioplankton and archaeoplankton communities at several taxonomic levels and spatial extents (i.e., North versus South Bay) to reveal patterns in alpha and beta diversity. We assess communities using high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in 177 water column samples collected along a 150-km transect over a 2-year monthly time-series. In North Bay, the microbial community is strongly structured by spatial salinity changes while in South Bay seasonal variations dominate community dynamics. Along the steep salinity gradient in North Bay, we find that operational taxonomic units (OTUs; 97% identity) have higher site specificity than at coarser taxonomic levels and turnover ("species" replacement) is high, revealing a distinct brackish community (in oligo-, meso-, and polyhaline samples) from fresh and marine end-members. At coarser taxonomic levels (e.g., phylum, class), taxa are broadly distributed across salinity zones (i.e., present/abundant in a large number of samples) and brackish communities appear to be a mix of fresh and marine communities. We also observe variations in brackish communities between samples with similar salinities, likely related to differences in water residence times between North and South Bay. Throughout SFB, suspended particulate matter is positively correlated with richness and influences changes in beta diversity. Within several abundant groups, including the SAR11 clade (comprising up to 30% of reads in a sample), OTUs appear to be specialized to a specific salinity range. Some other organisms also showed pronounced seasonal abundance, including Synechococcus, Ca. Actinomarina, and Nitrosopumilus-like OTUs. Overall, this study represents the first in-depth spatiotemporal survey of SFB microbial communities and provides insight into how planktonic microorganisms have specialized to different niches along the salinity gradient.

In the last decade, the known biogeography of nitrogen fixation in the ocean has been expanded to colder and nitrogen-rich coastal environments. The symbiotic nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria group A (UCYN-A) has been revealed as one of the most abundant and widespread nitrogen-fixers, and includes several sublineages that live associated with genetically distinct but closely related prymnesiophyte hosts. The UCYN-A1 sublineage is associated with an open ocean picoplanktonic prymnesiophyte, whereas UCYN-A2 is associated with the coastal nanoplanktonic coccolithophore Braarudosphaera bigelowii, suggesting that different sublineages may be adapted to different environments. Here, we study the diversity of nifH genes present at the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf in the Monterey Bay (MB), California, and report for the first time the presence of multiple UCYN-A sublineages, unexpectedly dominated by the UCYN-A2 sublineage. Sequence and quantitative PCR data over an 8-year time-series (2011-2018) showed a shift toward increasing UCYN-A2 abundances after 2013, and a marked seasonality for this sublineage which was present during summer-fall months, coinciding with the upwelling-relaxation period in the MB. Increased abundances corresponded to positive temperature anomalies in MB, and we discuss the possibility of a benthic life stage of the associated coccolithophore host to explain the seasonal pattern. The dominance of UCYN-A2 in coastal waters of the MB underscores the need to further explore the habitat preference of the different sublineages in order to provide additional support for the hypothesis that UCYN-A1 and UCYN-A2 sublineages are different ecotypes.

Se estudió la biomasa de macroalgas en la bahía de Cienfuegos con el objetivo de determinar su variación espacio-temporal. Los valores medios de biomasa oscilaron entre 7.5 (Playa Alegre en febrero-01) y 1055 gm -2 (Junco Sur en octubre 00). El grupo de las formas carnosas fue el dominante en todas las estaciones de colecta, representado principalmente por las especies Hypnea spinella (C. Agardh) Kützing, Acanthophora spicifera (M. Vahl) Børgesen, Gracilaria blodgettii Harvey, y Chondrophycus papillosus (C. Agardh) Garbary & Harper. El lóbulo norte, caracterizado por mayor impacto de la urbanización e industrialización, presentó menor diversidad de macroalgas en comparación con la estación del lóbulo sur. Hypnea spinella y Gracilaria spp, especies tolerantes a amplios rangos de condiciones ecológicas fueron dominantes en las estaciones del lóbulo norte. En la estación ubicada en el lóbulo sur se registró la mayor diversidad. Esta estación evidencia mejores condiciones oceánicas, lo cual está sustentado por la abundancia de Chondrophycus papillosus (C. Agardh) Garbary & Harper, característica de aguas más limpias. Se observó una notable variación temporal en los valores de biomasa en todas las estaciones. En las estaciones del lóbulo norte se registró el mayor valor de biomasa en el período lluvioso, lo cual puede ser debido a una mayor entrada de nutrientes durante ese período. En la estación del lóbulo sur se registró el mayor valor de biomasa en el período de seca, registrándose un sobrecrecimiento de un alga verde filamentosa que al parecer fue estimulado por una mayor transparencia y disposición de luz en el agua en esta época del año.

Diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) are produced by the marine dinoflagellate, Dinophysis, as well as select species of benthic Prorocentrum. The DSTs can bioaccumulate in shellfish and cause gastrointestinal illness when humans consume high levels of this toxin. Although not routinely monitored throughout the U.S., recent studies in Washington, Texas, and New York suggest DSTs may be widespread throughout U.S. coastal waters. This study describes a four-year time series (2013-2016) of Dinophysis concentration and DST level in California mussels (Mytilus californianus) from Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf (SCMW) in Monterey Bay, California. Results show a maximum Dinophysis concentration of 9404 cells/L during this study and suggest Dinophysis persists as a member of the background phytoplankton community throughout the year. In California mussels, DSTs were found at persistent low levels throughout the course of this study, and exceeded the FDA guidance level of 160 ng/g 19 out of 192 weeks sampled. Concentrations of Dinophysis alone are a positive but weak predictor of DST level in California mussels, and basic environmental variables (temperature, salinity, and nutrients) do not sufficiently explain variation in Dinophysis concentration at SCMW. This study demonstrates that Dinophysis in Monterey Bay are producing DSTs that accumulate in local shellfish throughout the year, occasionally reaching levels of concern.

During 2014-2016, severe marine heatwaves in the northeast Pacific triggered well-documented disturbances including mass mortalities, harmful algal blooms, and declines in subtidal kelp beds. However, less attention has been directed towards understanding how changes in sea surface temperature (SST) and alongshore currents during this period influenced the geographic distribution of coastal taxa. Seawater intrusion and brine water/freshwater interaction have significantly affected agriculture, industry and public water supply at Laizhou Bay, Shandong Province, China. In this study, a two-dimensional SEAWAT model is developed to simulate the seawater intrusion to coastal aquifers and brine water/fresh water interaction in the south of Laizhou Bay. This model is applied to predict the seawater intrusion and brine water/freshwater interface development in the coming years. The model profile is perpendicular to the coastal line with two interfaces, freshwater-saline water interface near the shore and inland brine water-saline water-seawater interface. The hydrogeological parameters in the SEAWAT-2000 model are calibrated by the head and salinity measurements. The precipitation infiltration coefficient, boundary conditions and thicknesses of aquifers are studied in a sensitivity analysis. The predicted results indicate that equivalent freshwater head in shallow freshwater-saline water area will decline 2.0 m by the end of the forecasting period, caused by groundwater over-pumping for farmland irrigation. The groundwater head in the brine-saline water area will also decrease about 1.8 m by the end of forecasting period, caused by excessive brine mining. Salinity finally decreases below 105 g/L in the brine area, but increases in other areas and contaminates fresh groundwater resources.

San Francisco Bay (SFB) is a eutrophic estuary that harbors both freshwater and marine toxigenic organisms that are responsible for harmful algal blooms. While there are few commercial fishery harvests within SFB, recreational and subsistence harvesting for shellfish is common. Coastal shellfish are monitored for domoic acid and paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs), but within SFB there is no routine monitoring for either toxin. Dinophysis shellfish toxins (DSTs) and freshwater microcystins are also present within SFB, but not routinely monitored. Acute exposure to any of these toxin groups has severe consequences for marine organisms and humans, but chronic exposure to sub-lethal doses, or synergistic effects from multiple toxins, are poorly understood and rarely addressed. This study documents the occurrence of domoic acid and microcystins in SFB from 2011 to 2016, and identifies domoic acid, microcystins, DSTs, and PSTs in marine mussels within SFB in 2012, 2014, and 2015. At least one toxin was detected in 99% of mussel samples, and all four toxin suites were identified in 37% of mussels. The presence of these toxins in marine mussels indicates that wildlife and humans who consume them are exposed to toxins at both sub-lethal and acute levels. As such, there are potential deleterious impacts for marine organisms and humans and these effects are unlikely to be documented. These results demonstrate the need for regular monitoring of marine and freshwater toxins in SFB, and suggest that co-occurrence of multiple toxins is a potential threat in other ecosystems where freshwater and seawater mix.

Haizhou Bay, a semi-enclosed key aquaculture area in East China, has had relatively limited research focused on trace metals and perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) in its biota. This study characterized the distribution, biomagnification and health risks of selected trace metals and PFAAs in various marine organisms from Haizhou Bay. Among the species examined, zinc (Zn) was the most prevalent metal, followed by copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr), whereas cadmium (Cd), total mercury (THg), and methylmercury (MeHg) contents were relatively low. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the most abundant PFAA, followed by perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The calculated trophic magnification factors (TMFs) were above one for Cr, THg, MeHg, and all PFAAs except perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) and perfluorotetradecanoic acid (PFTeDA). Across animal groups, gastropods exhibited relatively low levels of THg, MeHg, and perfluorosulfonic acids (∑PFSAs). By comparison, fish generally had lower levels of Cd and Cu compared to other animal groups, and demersal fish had significantly higher MeHg compared to gastropods. Certain organisms, such as cephalopods and shrimps, were found to pose potential health risks due to elevated levels of Cd, while levels of other studied metals, PFOS and PFOA generally appeared to be within safe limits for human consumption. Domoic acid (DA) is a neurotoxin produced by marine microalgae. It tends to accumulate in marine shellfish and fish, posing a threat to aquaculture and seafood consumers' health. In this study, DA in the surface and bottom seawater, sediment, and porewater of the Jiaozhou Bay, a typical mariculture bay in China, was systematically investigated for the first time over different seasons. Surprisingly, a high concentration of DA was discovered in the marine sediment porewater (maximum detected concentration: 289.49 ng/L) for the first time. DA was found to be extensively distributed in the water body and sedimentary environment of the Jiaozhou Bay. DA in the surface and bottom seawater of Jiaozhou Bay in spring was uniformly distributed, whereas DA showed obvious spatial variations in summer and winter. The high concentration areas of DA are located in the north of Jiaozhou Bay and decreased to the south areas. DA was also distributed in the sediment (spring mean: 316.57 ng/kg; summer mean: 10.22 ng/kg; winter mean: 237.08 ng/kg) and porewater (spring mean: 129.70 ng/L; summer mean: 53.54 ng/L; winter mean: 19.90 ng/L) of Jiaozhou Bay. The DA concentrations in the surface sediment and porewater were higher in the spring than in the winter and summer, contrary to the seasonal variation pattern observed in the surface and bottom seawater. The DA concentration in porewater was significantly higher than in the surface and bottom seawater, indicating that the risk of pollution contamination from DA to benthic fishery organisms may be underestimated. Overall, DA is widely distributed in the seawater and also in the benthic environment of Jiaozhou Bay and exhibited potential harm to fishery organisms varied greatly with seasons. The Chesapeake Bay watershed encompasses six states and the District of Columbia. Consequently, the people within it display great diversity in terms of values, allegiances, and experiences. That diversity may help to explain an apparent inability to coordinate actions aimed at redressing the dismal water quality throughout the watershed. In this paper, we bridge theory to an applied scenario to examine the importance of developing a collective identity within the watershed to bring about changes in individual behavior and policies. We present the current conditions of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, propose a stage model for the development of a collective watershed identity, outline theoretically grounded determinants of each stage, and discuss the challenges in developing a collective identity. Understanding the interaction between heavy metals and soil microbiomes is essential for maintaining ecosystem health and functionality in the face of persistent human-induced challenges. This study investigated the complex relationships between heavy metal contamination and the functional characteristics of soil microbial communities in the tidal soils of Hangzhou Bay, a region experiencing substantial environmental pressure due to its proximity to densely populated and industrialized regions. The north-shore sampling site showed moderate contaminations (mg/kg) of total arsenic (16.61 ± 1.13), cadmium (0.3 ± 0.05), copper (31.28 ± 1.23), nickel (37.44 ± 2.74), lead (34.29 ± 5.99), and zinc (120.8 ± 5.96), which are 1.29-2.94 times higher than the geochemical background values in Hangzhou Bay and adjacent areas. In contrast, the south-shore sampling site showed slightly higher levels of total arsenic (13.76 ± 1.35) and cadmium (0.13 ± 0.02) than the background values. Utilizing metagenomic sequencing, we decoded microbial functional genes essential for nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, and methane biogeochemical cycles. Although soil available nickel content was relatively low at 1 mg/kg, it exhibited strong associations with diverse microbial genes and biogeochemical pathways. Four key genes-hxlB, glpX, opd, and phny-emerged as pivotal players in the interactions with available nickel, suggesting the adaptability of microbial metabolic responses to heavy metal. Additionally, microbial genera such as Gemmatimonas and Ilumatobacter, which harbored diverse functional genes, demonstrated potential interactions with soil nickel. Measurements by volunteer scientists using participatory science methods in combination with high resolution remote sensing can improve our ability to monitor water quality changes in highly vulnerable and economically valuable nearshore and estuarine habitats. In the Chesapeake Bay (USA), tidal tributaries are a focus of watershed and shoreline management efforts to improve water quality. The Chesapeake Water Watch program seeks to enhance the monitoring of tributaries by developing and testing methods for volunteer scientists to easily measure chlorophyll, turbidity, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) to inform Bay stakeholders and improve algorithms for analogous remote sensing (RS) products. In the program, trained volunteers have measured surface turbidity using a smartphone app, HydroColor, calibrated with a photographer's gray card. In vivo chlorophyll and CDOM fluorescence were assessed in surface samples with hand-held fluorometers (Aquafluor) located at sample processing "hubs" where volunteers drop off samples for same day processing. In validation samples, HydroColor turbidity and Aquafluor in vivo chlorophyll and CDOM fluorescence were linear estimators of standard analytical measures of turbidity, chlorophyll and CDOM, respectively, with R2 values ranging from 0.65 to 0.85. Updates implemented in a new version (v2) of HydroColor improved the precision of estimates. These methods are being used for both repeat sampling at fixed sites of interest and ad-hoc "blitzes" to synoptically sample tributaries all around the Bay in coordination with satellite overpasses. Living benthic foraminifera, known as environmental bio-indicators of both natural and anthropogenic conditions in marine environments, were investigated in the coastal environment of Roscoff Aber Bay (Brittany, France). Eight sampling sites subject to natural variations (freshwater inputs, tides) and/or anthropogenic impacts (pollution, eutrophication) were studied over four seasons in 2021-2022 (November, February, May, August). We sought to understand the spatial distribution of foraminiferal populations within and between sampling sites over the different seasons and to identify sensitive species and those tolerant to anthropogenic impacts. To this end, sedimentary and biogeochemical characteristics of the sediments were examined by measuring grain size, temperature, oxygen, salinity, pH, environmental pigment concentration (chl a and phaeopigments), total organic carbon (TOC), isotopic ratios of carbon (δ13C), nitrogen (δ15N) and sulfide (δ34S), and chl a fluorescence. Considering these parameters as potential driving factors, four environments were distinguished among the sampling sites: open water, terrestrial, oligotrophic and eutrophic. These showed an increasing gradient of organic supply as well as very different microbial activities, highlighted by carbon and sulfide isotopic ratios. Foraminiferal population study revealed the dominant species characterising these main environments. The lowest abundance but highest diversity of foraminifera was found in the harbour site, associated with the dominance of Haynesina germanica, suggesting this species is tolerant to eutrophic environments and anthropogenic impacts. Open water was dominated by Ammonia beccarii and Elphidium crispum, while Quinqueloculina seminula was the most abundant species in the site with the greatest terrestrial influence. Interestingly, the observed organic enrichment of the harbour due to anthropogenic activities (fisheries, waste deposits, etc.) does not seem to significantly affect foraminiferal diversity. Understanding species' critical habitat requirements is crucial for effective conservation and management. However, such information can be challenging to obtain, particularly for highly mobile, wide-ranging species such as cetaceans. In the absence of systematic surveys, alternative economically viable methods are needed, such as the use of data collected from platforms of opportunity, and modelling techniques to predict species distribution in un-surveyed areas. The present study used data collected by ecotourism and other vessels of opportunity to investigate important habitats of a small, poorly studied population of bottlenose dolphins in Port Phillip Bay, south-eastern Australia. Using 16 years of dolphin sighting location data, an ensemble habitat suitability model was built from which physical factors influencing dolphin distribution were identified. Results indicated that important habitats were those areas close to shipping channels and coastlines with these factors primarily influencing the variation in the likelihood of dolphin presence. The relatively good performance of the ensemble model suggests that simple presence-background data may be sufficient for predicting the species distribution where sighting data are limited. However, additional data from the center of Port Phillip Bay is required to further support this contention. Important habitat features identified in the study are likely to relate to favorable foraging conditions for dolphins as they are known to provide feeding, breeding, and spawning habitat for a diverse range of fish and cephalopod prey species. From Darwin's visit to nowadays, we analyzed the changes in species- and genus-level richness and turnover, equity, diversity, composition, as well as functional group and functional strategy dynamics over a 213-year historical series of the seaweed assemblage from Rio de Janeiro Bay. We developed new analysis methods to serve as a protocol for worldwide functional and bioindicator assessment of seaweed assemblages. Over the two centuries of changes tracked, the integration of taxonomic, functional group, and functional strategy analyses unraveled a trajectory of seaweed assemblage restructuring under human disturbance. Our taxonomic analyses showed a high species and genus turnover and a decline in richness, with the local extinction of the Sargassum genus, responsible for warm temperate kelp forests in the Western Atlantic. Seaweed functional group data presented a trend of morphological simplification and miniaturization, with the decline of marine forest canopy and subcanopy-forming groups favoring filamentous and crustose algae dominance. Functional strategy data showed the historical decline of competitive structuring as an assemblage driver in favor of disturbance and stress-structuring, as highlighted by the competitive strategy decrease, coupled with stress-tolerant and ruderal strategies rise across metrics. These changes were successfully portrayed by the new ecological index we proposed, the C/SR index. The threat of declining seaweed beds has been a concern around the world. Seagrass and seaweed (brown algae) beds are essential habitats supporting fisheries. However, approximately 22% of these habitats have been lost in Japan due to increased coastal landfill sites and ports. This study aims to rehabilitate the depletion of these habitats by constructing an artificial reef in Wakasa Bay, Japan, and monitoring Sargassaceae succession in the second and fourth years after the construction was completed. In this study, we set up four sites on the artificial reef. Then we identified the seaweed species composition and coverage of the Sargassaceae using underwater visual observation by scuba divers. The seaweed coverage was already over approximately 80% in the second year after construction. The Sargassum horneri and S. confusum dominated during the first and second sampling in the second year after construction, and Myagropsis myagroides and S. patens during the third and fourth sampling in the fourth year after construction. Thus, the recovery of species composition takes longer than that of coverage. Therefore, observing species composition recovery is essential when constructing the artificial reef., (© 2024. The Sepetiba Bay (SB, SE Brazil) is a highly anthropized and industrialized area that has experienced severe environmental degradation in recent decades. This study applies a multiproxy approach to document the response of living benthic foraminifera to environmental stress and to infer the Ecological Quality Status (EcoQS) in SB. Our methodology involved a comprehensive comparison of the density and percentage of benthic foraminiferal species with physicochemical, textural, and geochemical data, specifically the concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs). We also statistically compared two geochemical indices, the pollution load index (PLI) and the potential ecological risk index (PERI), with two ecological indices, the Tolerant Species Index (TSI) and the Exp(H'bc). The TSI and the Exp(H'bc) indices are significantly correlated with the environmental stressors in Sepetiba Bay, namely the PTEs concentrations (As, Cd, Pb, and Zn). The most tolerant species to the enrichment of PTEs and organic matter are Ammonia tepida (Cushman, 1926), Elphidium excavatum (Terquem, 1875), Ammonia buzasi Hayward and Holzmann, 2021 and Ammonia rolshauseni (Cushman and Bermúdez, 1946). The Exp(H'bc) and TSI reveal that most stations located in the inner zone and near the margins of the bay have poor and bad EcoQS, which agrees with the distribution of the environmental stressors. Thus, the current environmental conditions of the inner area of Sepetiba Bay are of great concern. This work also shows that using the TSI and the Exp(H'bc) indices, it is possible to classify EcoQS in transitional coastal environments in the North and South Atlantic transitional waters. The Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao Greater Bay Area (GHMA) has experienced economic development and rapid growth of transportation infrastructure in recent years. However, the economic advancement is also accompanied by serious atmospheric pollution, which threatens the health of the residents, thus, it is of great significance to explore the impact of atmospheric pollution on the health expenditures of residents in the GHMA. The article establishes a spatial econometric model to study the impact of atmospheric pollution on residents' health expenditure in the GHMA based on panel data from 2014 to 2021, using nine prefectures in the GHMA as research objects. The results show that: (1) Atmospheric pollution in the GHMA has an obvious spatial agglomeration phenomenon and spatial spillover effect, and the impact of atmospheric pollution on the health of the residents is still very serious; (2) PM2.5 emissions are positively and significantly related to the actual health care cost per person, and the rise in air pollution is the main reason for the rise in public health spending; (3) Other factors also have different impacts on residents' health expenditures. The O 2 content of the global ocean has been declining progressively over the past decades, mainly because of human activities and global warming. Despite this situation, the responses of macrobenthos under hypoxic conditions remain poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a long-term observation (2015-2022) to investigate the intricate impact of summer hypoxia on macrobenthic communities in a semi-enclosed bay of the North Yellow Sea. Comparative analyses revealed higher macrobenthos abundance (1956.8 ± 1507.5 ind./m 2 vs. 871.8 ± 636.9 ind./m 2 ) and biomass (8.2 ± 4.1 g/m 2 vs. 5.6 ± 3.2 g/m 2 ) at hypoxic sites compared to normoxic sites during hypoxic years. Notably, polychaete species demonstrated remarkable adaptability, dominating hypoxic sites, and shaping community structure. The decline in biodiversity underscored the vulnerability and diminished resilience of macrobenthic communities to hypoxic stressors. Stable isotope analysis provided valuable insights into food web structures. The average trophic level of macrobenthos measured 2.84 ± 0.70 at hypoxic sites, contrasting with the higher value of 3.14 ± 0.74 observed at normoxic sites, indicating the absence of predators at high trophic levels under hypoxic conditions. Moreover, trophic interactions were significantly altered, resulting in a simplified and more vulnerable macrobenthic trophic structure. The Guanabara Bay hydrographic region (GBHR) has served as a central hub for human settlement and resource utilization throughout Brazil's history. However, the region's high population density and intense industrial activity have come at a cost, leading to a significant decline in water quality. This work aimed to identify homogeneous regions in GBHR according to water quality parameters in dry and rainy periods. The following water quality monitoring variables were monitored at 49 gauge stations: total phosphorus (TP), nitrate (NO 3 - ), dissolved oxygen (DO), hydrogenionic potential (pH), turbidity (Turb), thermotolerant coliforms (TCol), total dissolved solids (TDS), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), water temperature (Tw), and air temperature (Ta). The statistical analysis consisted of determining principal components, cluster analysis, seasonal differences, and Spearman's correlation. The water quality parameter correlations were not expressively influenced by seasonality, but there are differences in the concentrations of these parameters in the dry and rainy periods. In the dry period, urban pressure on water quality is mainly due to fecal coliforms. The resulting clusters delimited areas under urban, agricultural, and forestry influence. Clusters located in areas with high demographic density showed high concentrations of TCol and TP, while clusters influenced by forestry and agriculture had better water quality. In the rainy season, clusters with urban influence showed problems with TCol and TP, in addition to some characteristics in each group, such as high TDS, NO 3 - , and BOD. Forested areas showed high DO, and clusters under agricultural influence had higher concentrations of TCol, BOD, and NO 3 - concerning forested regions. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has attracted attention for its extraordinary pace of economic development and is considered to be leading the way in China's transformation from a manufacturing to an innovation cluster. However, due to rapid economic expansion and rapid urbanization, the Great Bay Area still struggles with low energy efficiency and environmental degradation, which has slowed down the pace of development. Therefore, in order to alleviate energy pressure, promote the country's sustainable development and gain a competitive advantage in the global market, researching energy efficiency and improving energy utilization efficiency is crucial. In this study, macro-level energy efficiency indicators are constructed using energy consumption data from various cities in the Greater Bay Area for the period from 2000 to 2020, and the spatio-temporal evolution of energy efficiency is analysed. The results show that all cities in the Greater Bay Area experienced an increasing trend in energy efficiency from 2000 to 2019, with significant variation in growth rates and magnitudes between cities. Compared to the nine cities in Guangdong province, Hong Kong and Macao exhibited significantly superior energy efficiency, with Foshan recording the highest growth rate of 14%. In 2020, most cities experienced a decline in energy efficiency due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with Macao experiencing the greatest decrease at 57%. Hong Kong and Macao are both in the "low consumption and high efficiency" target region, while Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Zhuhai are consistently in the "both high" region. Changes in the industrial upgrading index correspond significantly with changes in energy efficiency trajectories, with the transition from primary to secondary and tertiary industries playing a more substantial role. There is no significant association found between the strength of environmental regulation and changes in energy efficiency. Understanding the characteristics of waterlogging in urban agglomeration is essential for effective waterlogging prevention and management, as well as for promoting sustainable urban development. Previous studies have predominantly focused on the driving mechanisms of waterlogging in urban agglomeration at a single scale, but urban agglomeration space has greater spatio-temporal heterogeneity, it is often difficult to fully reveal such characteristics at a single scale. Consequently, this study endeavors to explore the spatio-temporal evolution characteristics and underlying mechanisms of waterlogging incidents within urban agglomerations by adopting a multi-scale analytical approach. The results indicate that: (1) The waterlogging degree and high-density zones increase in the GBA, and the waterlogging points are spatially polycentric. However, the waterlogging point in Hong Kong is decreasing. (2) The influence of ISP and AI on waterlogging is dominant at all scales, followed by RE and Slope. ISP∩Slope and ISP∩RE are the key interactions for waterlogging. (3) The aggregation of waterlogging decreases with grid scale, and the influence of land cover factors on waterlogging increases with grid scale. Moreover, the findings at the grid scale outperformed those at the watershed scale, indicating that the grid scale is more conducive to the investigation of waterlogging in urban agglomerations. Dechloranes, including dechlorane 602 (Dec 602), dechlorane 603 (Dec 603), dechlorane 604 (Dec 604), dechlorane plus (DP, including syn- and anti-DP) and mirex, were determined in marine food web from Dalian Bay, Northeast China to investigate their occurrence andtrophic transfer. In all organisms, the detection rates were Dec 602 (99%) > mirex (95%) > Dec 603 (92%) > anti-DP (91%) > syn-DP (82%) > Dec 604 (9.6%). The concentrations were 0.92-16 ng/g lipid weight (lw) for mirex, 0.53-2.3 ng/g lw for syn-DP, 1.1-4.5 ng/g lw for anti-DP, 0.19-5.0 ng/g lw for Dec 602, 0.26-1.9 ng/g lw for Dec 603 and 0.020-0.33 ng/g lw for Dec 604. Significant positive relationships (p < 0.0001) were observed between lipid normalized concentrations and trophic levels for mirex (R 2  = 0.80) and Dec602 (R 2  = 0.82) in food webs, with the calculated TMFs values of 3.09 and 3.39, respectively, indicating the trophic magnification potential of these compounds. For syn-DP, anti-DP, Dec 603 and Dec 604, the similar significant relationships were not found, suggesting that these chemicals do not trophic magnification nor trophic dilution in the food web. With low log K OW values for mirex (7.01) and Dec 602 (8.05), these two compounds have the highest magnifications potentials, while the magnification potential of Dec 603, Dec 604 and DP dramatically decreased because of their extremely big log K OW values (higher than 10). Zoning of the White Sea subjects to intense anthropogenic influence. Previously the author in his works performed ecological zoning the entire water area of the sea according to average annual and seasonal values. Large cities are located on the shores of the bays, in which enterprises of the forest, woodworking, engineering, chemical industry are located, oil terminals are located in three of the four bays. Zoning is carried out by means of point classifications. Statistical data of Roshydromet and text data from literary sources were used as initial data. For the study, 27 influencing factors were selected, divided into 6 groups. The water area of the White Sea is divided into 88 equal sections. Calendar seasons have been selected. The final results of calculations are shown in 4 figures. Analysis of seasonal maps of the bays of the White Sea showed that environmental tensions in the spring are highest, in the summer - the least. The main factors influencing this result are water pollution and oil pollution.

Genetic diversity and population structure reflect complex interactions among a diverse set of processes that may vary temporally, limiting their potential to predict ecological and evolutionary outcomes. Yet, the stability of these patterns is rarely tested. We resampled eelgrass (Zostera marina) meadows from published studies to determine variability in genetic diversity and structure within and between meadows over 5-12 years. The meadows sampled (San Francisco, Tomales and Bodega Bays in California and the Virginia coastal bays) represent a range of life histories (annual vs perennial), age (well-established vs restored) and environments (rural vs urbanized). In all of these systems, neither diversity nor differentiation (FST) changed over time. Differences among tidal heights within Bodega Bay were also remarkably consistent, with the high intertidal being more diverse than the subtidal, and tidal height differentiation being modest but significant at both time points. Historical studies used only a few microsatellite loci; therefore, our temporal comparisons were based on 4-5 loci. However, analysis of the current data using a set of 12 loci show that 4-5 loci are sufficient to describe diversity and differentiation patterns in this system. This temporal consistency was not because of the resampling of large clones, underscoring the feasibility and relevance of understanding drivers of the differences. Because seagrasses are declining at rapid rates, restoration and conservation are increasingly a coastal management priority. Our results argue that surveys of eelgrass genetic structure and diversity at decadal scales can provide accurate depictions of populations, increasing the utility of published genetic data for restoration and designing networks of reserves.

Ipak, režim u tjesnacima koji se nalaze na ulazu u zaljeve čijim obalama vlada više država, ni nakon stupanja na snagu Konvencije iz 1982. nije bez dvojbi. Kao ilustrativan nameće se primjer Kerčkog tjesnaca i Azovskog mora. Pravni status ovih morskih prostora zadobio je veću pozornost međunarodne javnosti zbog događaja koji su se zbili 25. studenog 2018., kada su vlasti Ruske Federacije spriječile tri ukrajinska broda u pokušaju prolaska Kerčkim tjesnacem. Azovsko more dovoljno je široko kako bi u njemu, prema općem režimu postojali morski pojasevi u kojima vrijedi načelo slobode plovidbe. Nasuprot tome, obalne države, Ruska Federacija i Ukrajina zaključile su 2003. Sporazum o suradnji u korištenju Azovskim morem i Kerčkim tjesnacem. Njime su Azovsko more i Kerčki tjesnac proglašeni unutrašnjim morskim vodama obalnih država pozivanjem na historijske razloge. Ruska Federacija i Ukrajina su Sporazumom iz 2003. uredile pitanje plovidbe Azovskim morem i Kerčkim tjesnacem restriktivnije od odredbi o tranzitnom prolasku, koje bi bile primjenjive kao opće pravo. U radu se razmatra pravna dopustivost primjene režima sadržanog u Sporazumu iz 2003. nasuprot opće primjenjivom režimu tranzitnog prolaska. Prikazuju se i pojedini aspekti prava i obveza brodova u prolasku prema jednom i drugom režimu, s obzirom na pozivanje Ruske Federacije i Ukrajine na međusobno nepoštivanje tih prava i obveza u reakcijama na događaje od 25. studenog 2018. Na kraju, ponuđeni su zaključci o primjenjivom režimu na plovidbu Kerčkim tjesnacem općenito i u okolnostima navedenih događaja. In English: The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea was, inter alia, an attempt to create an integral system of rules governing passage through straits. Nevertheless, straits that are entryways into pluri-state bays remain a controversial issue. An interesting example of this situation is the Kerch Strait leading into the Sea of Azov. These areas received more attention from the international community after 25 November 2018, when three Ukrainian vessels were prevented from passing through the Kerch Strait by the authorities of the Russian Federation. The Sea of Azov is wide enough to accommodate maritime areas in which freedom of navigation exists. However, in 2003 its coastal states, the Russian Federation and Ukraine, concluded the Agreement on Cooperation on the Use of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. In this Agreement, the coastal states proclaimed that the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait form part of their internal waters, citing historical reasons for doing so. Regulation concerning navigation rights contained in the Agreement is stricter than the rules governing transit passage, which would be applicable as general law. This paper addresses the question of the admissibility of applying the 2003 Agreement to its target maritime areas. Some aspects of the rights and duties of ships in passage according to the regimes of both the 2003 Agreement and transit passage contained in the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention are also considered. The reason for this examination is that both the Russian Federation and Ukraine claim that the other side failed to comply with its duties. Finally, conclusions are drawn as to which regime seems to be applicable.

A geographically isolated set of southern localities of the formerly monotypic goby genus Eucyclogobius is known to be reciprocally monophyletic and substantially divergent in mitochondrial sequence and nuclear microsatellite-based phylogenies relative to populations to the north along the California coast. To clarify taxonomic and conservation status, we conducted a suite of analyses on a comprehensive set of morphological counts and measures from across the range of Eucyclogobius and describe the southern populations as a new species, the Southern Tidewater Goby, Eucyclogobius kristinae, now separate from the Northern Tidewater Goby Eucyclogobius newberryi (Girard 1856). In addition to molecular distinction, adults of E. kristinae are diagnosed by: 1) loss of the anterior supratemporal lateral-line canals resulting in higher neuromast counts, 2) lower pectoral and branched caudal ray counts, and 3) sets of measurements identified via discriminant analysis. These differences suggest ecological distinction of the two species. Previous studies estimated lineage separation at 2-4 million years ago, and mitochondrial sequence divergence exceeds that of other recognized fish species. Fish from Santa Monica Artesian Springs (Los Angeles County) northward belong to E. newberryi; those from Aliso Creek (Orange County) southward constitute E. kristinae. The lagoonal habitat of Eucyclogobius has been diminished or degraded, leading to special conservation status at state and federal levels beginning in 1980. Habitat of the newly described species has been impacted by a range of anthropogenic activities, including the conversion of closing lagoons to open tidal systems in the name of restoration. In the last 30 years, E. kristinae has only been observed in nine intermittently occupied lagoonal systems in northern San Diego County; it currently persists in only three sites. Thus, the new species is in imminent danger of extinction and will require ongoing active management.

As an emerging global issue in coastal marine ecosystems, eutrophication may lead to profound ecological consequences or disasters. Six locations in Xiangshan Bay were sampled during 2012-2022 along the eutrophication gradient from the innermost bay with the most eutrophication to the outer bay with the least eutrophication. A trait-based method was adopted to explore the ecological effects of eutrophication on macrobenthic communities. The results showed that the community composition is mostly characterized by deposit feeders and predators with small (1-3 cm) and large (> 10 cm) body sizes, classified as indifferent and tolerant species (AMBI ecological groups), deposit feeders and predators (feeding mode), and a preference for a free living lifestyle. The RLQ and fourth-corner analyses further confirmed that there was a negative correlation between the abundance of small macrobenthic organisms (< 1 cm) and nitrate concentration. Phosphorus was a crucial influencing factor for macrobenthic spatial patterns and was strongly affected by the activities of deposit feeders and the decomposition of macrobenthos. Due to mass organic deposition resulting from increased primary production, long-term eutrophication had led to an increase in the proportion of detritus feeders. In addition, the significant negative correlation between the concentration of dissolved oxygen and first-order opportunistic species represented by the polychaete Capitella capitata indicated tolerance to hypoxia. Background: Embankment dams were built south of the Laizhou bay in China for controlling storm surge disasters, but they are not enough to replace coastal forests in protecting the land. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of embankment dams on natural forests dominated by Tamarix austromongolica and test whether the dam-shrub system is a preferable updated defense., Methods: Coastal forests on two typical flats, one before and one behind embankment dams, were investigated using quadrats and lines. Land bareness, vegetation composition and species co-occurrence were assessed; structures of T. austromongolica populations were evaluated; and spatial patterns of the populations were analyzed using Ripley's K and K 1,2 functions., Results: In the area before embankment dams, 84.8% of T. austromongolica were juveniles (basal diameter ≤ 3 cm), and 15.2% were adults (basal diameter > 3 cm); behind the dams, 52.9% were juveniles, and 47.1 were adults. In the area before the dams, the land bareness was 13.7%, four species occurred, and they all were ready to co-occur with T. austromongolica ; behind the dams, the land bareness was 0%, and 16 species occurred whereas they somewhat resisted co-occurrence with T. austromongolica . In the area before the dams, the T. austromongolica population was aggregated in heterogeneous patches, and the juveniles tended to co-occur with the adults; behind the dams, they were over-dispersed as nearly uniform distributions, while the juveniles could recruit and were primarily independent of the adults. These results indicate that the T. austromongolica species did not suffer from the unnatural dams, but benefited somehow in population expansion and development. The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) represents a significant economic zone with a diverse financial landscape. Understanding the spatial distribution of financial resources within this area is crucial for promoting balanced economic growth and financial development. This study investigates the spatial patterns of financial agglomeration in the GBA, identifying key influencing factors and assessing their impact on the region's financial landscape. We employ the entropy value method to evaluate financial agglomeration levels across the GBA's cities. Additionally, we use spatial econometric techniques to analyze the spatial correlations and the Geo-Detector model to determine the primary factors influencing financial agglomeration. The analysis reveals an overall increase in financial agglomeration, with significant disparities among cities. Key factors driving this agglomeration include transportation infrastructure, overseas trade, foreign direct investment (FDI), and technological advancements. Hong Kong and Shenzhen display notable unevenness in the distribution of financial industries. The interplay between finance, technology, and industrial sectors suggests considerable development potential. Understanding and optimizing the spatial distribution of financial resources is essential for fostering high-quality financial development and sustainable economic growth in the GBA. With economic and societal development, the ecological environment of the Yellow River Delta-Laizhou Bay coastal zone has been seriously damaged. Exploring the changes in land use and ecosystem service value (ESV) is essential to ecological construction of the region. The random forest classification method was used for land cover interpretation of the four periods of remote sensing images in the study area from 1990 to 2020. Newly calculated regional difference coefficients and social development coefficients were used to construct a dynamic ESV assessment model and to study its changes from overall and sea‒land gradient perspectives. The results showed that construction land, salt pans, aquaculture ponds, and inland water masses expanded rapidly, while cropland, tidal flats, and shallow waters shrank sharply over the past 30 years. The ESV in the study area has continued to decrease from 34.47 billion yuan in 1990 to 25.23 billion yuan in 2020, a total decrease of 9.23 billion yuan. This is mostly due to the encroachment of construction land, salt pans, and aquaculture ponds, and the flow of ecosystem services from high-value land cover types (tidal flats, herbaceous wetlands, and cropland) to medium- and low-value land cover types. Moreover, the land cover transfer and ESVs exhibited a decreasing trend from sea to land, with significant sea-land gradient differences. Land conversion is most common in the 0-15 km coastal zone, mainly from natural wetlands to artificial wetlands, where the ESV also decreases rapidly. Considering the regional differences and social development in this paper, the ESV of small-scale areas can be reasonably evaluated to explore the characteristics and causes of changes in land use and ESVs, which can provide an important reference for ecological protection and land use management in the region., (© 2024. The Emu Bay Shale (EBS) of South Australia is anomalous among Cambrian Lagerstätten because it captures anatomical information that is rare in Burgess Shale-type fossils, and because of its inferred nearshore setting, the nature of which has remained controversial. Intensive study, combining outcrop and borehole data with a compilation of >25,000 fossil specimens, reveals that the EBS biota inhabited a fan delta complex within a tectonically active basin. Preservation of soft-bodied organisms in this setting is unexpected and further underscores differences between the EBS and other Cambrian Lagerstätten. Environmental conditions, including oxygen fluctuations, slope instability, high suspended sediment concentrations, and episodic high-energy events, inhibited colonization of the lower prodelta by all but a few specialist species but favored downslope transportation and preservation of other largely endemic, shallow-water benthos. The EBS provides extraordinary insight into early Cambrian animal diversity from Gondwana. These results demonstrate how environmental factors determined community composition and provide a framework for understanding this unique Konservat-Lagerstätte.

This study examines the flood disaster management network within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) from 2015 to 2021, identifying government department involvement and influence shifts. Key findings indicate a decrease in the centrality of the Public Security Office and Department of Transportation, suggesting a strategic shift toward more specialized, technology-driven disaster management. Conversely, the Science Bureau's increased engagement, from 8.43% to 12.84%, highlights a policy shift toward scientific research and technological innovation in managing flood risks. The analysis reveals underutilized communication between the Central Committee, the Poverty Alleviation Office, and the Publicity Department, highlighting opportunities for improved integration in disaster management and public communication strategies. To address these issues, the study suggests strengthening inter-departmental collaboration to leverage technological advancements in disaster management. It also recommends integrating flood disaster management with poverty alleviation initiatives to support affected populations comprehensively. Increasing the involvement of the Publicity Department is crucial for improving timely and transparent communication of flood-related data to the public. The increasing demand for economic development in the coastal zone is exerting greater pressure on the eco-environment in this region. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct comprehensive research on the sustainable development of the eco-environment in coastal areas. Grounded in sustainable development theory and Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), this study assessed sustainable development of Jiaozhou Bay (JZB), China over the period from 2015 to 2019 under multiple pressures applying the Driver-Pressure-State-Impact-Response (DPSIR) framework. Subsequently, a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis was employed to propose specific countermeasures and recommendations. In terms of weight within the criterion layer, Response (R) and Pressure (P) were assigned higher weights. The comprehensive assessment value Z in the target layer indicated a slight decrease in 2016 followed by a gradual increase that eventually led to stabilization. The comprehensive assessment values of the indicators varied depending on different conditions, implying that higher values would contribute to sustainable development of the eco-environment. Based on a SWOT analysis, strategies for Qingdao were derived from a combination of research findings and future development policy. These strategies include preventing and controlling land and sea pollution, governing reclamation activities, optimizing industrial structure, and strengthening public opinion guidance. Bandon Bay is a very fertile bay for coastal aquaculture, especially for blood cockles (Anadara granosa). Its structural pattern supports the flow of nutrients which directly sent from many rivers resulted the high production capacity of blood cockle at the top level in the country. Besides organic compounds present in sediment, inorganic substances are essential for growth, survival and shell development of blood cockles. A comparative study of minerals and oxide compounds which accumulated in the sediments at eight stations around the cockle culture area was conducted. These stations are located along the estuaries at Tha Thong, Tha Chang, Phum Riang, and Tapi. The proportion of oxide compounds were determinedusing X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) technique and minerals were analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS). Results showed that sediment characteristics, oxide composition and the amount of minerals among the stations are different from each other. The sediments of the eastern and the western coasts were characterized as crumble clay and muddy sand, respectively. Twelve types of oxide compounds, namely SiO2, Al2O3, Fe2O3, K2O, Cl, MgO, Na2O, SO3, CaO, TiO2, MnO, P2O5 were found in various quantities, with SiO2, Al2O3, and Fe2O3 were the fundamental minerals ranging from 85.64-90.82%.
